God is Queer. In a world of normative paradigms, God will never fit in and nor should we. That twitching and itching for something more will consistently be present until we step out of our closets and into the Queer. The Courage to Be Queer is about the wildness and beauty of an indescribable and uncontainable God. What is the Queer calling us to be? We are to be the ones shouting for justice. We are to be the ones dancing for freedom. We are to be the ones dreaming for hope. We are to be the ones . . . In the midst of the spectacle of it all, there will be those observers who hear the knocking and lean in. Will you open the door?

The Courage to Be Queer, by Jeff Hood

Review ''Jeff Hood is a dear prophet of Holy Truth, and this book has solidified that for me.''--Sister Liz Colver, Rostered Deaconess (Lutheran - ELCA)''This is a bold intervention into status-quo versions of Christianity. Hood enacts a radical queer politics of hope that affirms the power of relational difference and challenges readers to create new forms of inclusive communities grounded in transformational love.''--AnaLouise Keating, Professor of Women's Studies, Texas Woman's University''What a rich story there is in this book! Surely the queering of Jeff Hood can introduce us to a queer theology that can queer us all.''--Jane Spahr, Presbyterian Pastor, Activist and Theologian (PCUSA)''Hood masterfully challenges us to examine the sea of sameness we immerse ourselves in and leave our closets of conformity. We will need to read this book again and again in our journey to embrace the abundance of God's queerness within.''--Michelle Stafford, Transgender Education Network of Texas''This book has the power to speak life to dry bones. It is a salvific word. Hood courageously sounds a clarion call for all persons to declare their difference as holy. For to be holy, is to be queer.''--Kyndra D. Frazier, Alliance of Baptists''Prepare to have the dust shaken off of your religion. The Courage to Be Queer opens the tent of God's love to everybody by defying stereotypes and challenging biblical interpreters to be vital and alive. This book is an act of courage that calls upon people of faith to embrace their own personal difference and then act in freedom for the wellbeing of others. Jeff Hood says everyone is truly queer: unique, individual, and precious beyond all accounting to the Queer God who makes all people new in the Spirit. As Hood engages the world, Jesus Christ, and the most familiar stories from the Bible, he shows us how to discover anew the face of God in new forms of humanity and divinity. He is in the vanguard of a new spirituality for a new age. This is a must-read book!''--Stephen V. Sprinkle, Professor of Practical Theology, Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University''Reading Jeff Hood's work deepened my commitment to liberation theology and has firmly shifted my ambivalence about the word queer to a place of tremendous pride in being queer. The real power in these words flows from the fact that Hood lives out the queer life that he writes about.''--Jim Mitulski, Queer Liberation Activist and pastor in the Metropolitan Community Church, United Church of Christ and Disciples of Christ denominations''In imagining that great creative power we typically call God as 'the Queer,' Jeff Hood offers us a radical vision where binaries of identity and reality no longer confine us. Hood's construction of this new liberation theology stands boldly in the tradition of other theologies that have expanded our understandings of who we are as individuals, as a community and as spiritual beings, and grants us a freedom to then construct our lives and relationships in profoundly new ways. The Courage to Be Queer is a gift to all of us in our struggle to be fully human and fully free--fully queer!''--Kristin Stoneking, Executive Director, Fellowship of Reconciliation''I live in a dark place. Jeff Hood shared the Queer God with me. I can say without hesitation that the queer revelation of the God within has changed my life and I encourage you to read everything this man writes.''--Will Speer, Texas Death Row #999398''In his book, Hood brilliantly strings together smooth pearls of wisdom, fascinating baubles of theology, inherited jewels of scripture, and the peculiar trinkets of his own experience in a full circle, creating a dazzling and complete queer theology for our time.''--Anna Humble, Association Minister, North Texas Association of the United Church of Christ --Wipf and Stock Publishers''There comes a point when our experiences of life outgrows the God we thought we knew. This is a work attempting to describe the God who is, and if we are brave enough to sit with the words beyond whatever initial emotions they evoke, we will find that Dr. Hood is bringing us closer to knowing the God to whom we are fully known.''--Lucas Johnson, International Coordinator, International Fellowship of Reconciliation''I embrace Hood's eloquent and learned queering of the religious text: It is so needed, especially for someone like me who is antagonistic toward religion because of its misuses historically and today.''--Terry Barrett, Professor Emeritus of Art Education, The Ohio State University ''The Queer is that which is not normative, the utterly unique. You would think that a law professor would have little use for the non-normative, especially when considered in the (for me) foreign context of 'theology.' I rummage through structures and norms for a living. It is precisely the point, however, that a theology that routinely and instinctively kills the 'Queer within' is no theology at all. Hood's exposition of theology is for everyone. Even someone as lost as me. For God is the ultimate Queer; the 'that than which no greater can be conceived.' Every page that Hood has written is a step into the anti-conception, and a step towards the non-normative power that is the reality most perfect for us to know of God. When I walk away from the normative, as Queer-protagonist, I am paradoxically walking towards the Queer-me that God has created. I am embracing the rubric of love by loving the Queer that is God, who is simultaneously embracing the Queer-me and helping me to see and embrace the Queer in others. The genius and pure light of this book are undeniable, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.''--Michael C. Duff, Centennial Distinguished Professor of Law, University of Wyoming College of Law ''Buddhist and Christian literalisms often prevent us from perceiving the fundamental non-duality of the core teachings of both faith traditions: wisdom and compassion. Rev. Jeff Hood's The Courage to Be Queer is a timely and necessary exploration of the ultimate wisdom of interdependence and the radical compassion of acceptance of all differences as complementary aspects of ultimate reality. Christians will benefit from this incisive and faithful exploration of their scriptures, and persons of other faiths will be reminded of the need to appreciate and embrace difference in ourselves, our traditions, and communities.'' --Tashi Nyima, Nying Je Ling, Abode of Great Compassion, New Jonang Buddhist Community''How quickly we forget that we are 'a curious and peculiar people!' But Dr. Jeff Hood reminds us that in our unique individual stories of encounters with holiness & discoveries of self, we find our splendid divine queerness and the wonder and liberation of the Queer Within. Bravo!''--Glenna Shepherd, Pleasant Hill Community Church, United Church of Christ ''Queer theologies emerge from a variety of unexpected personal and social contexts. The Courage to Be Queer is the bold work of Baptist activist Jeff Hood.''--Robert Shore-Goss, Pastor/Theologian of Metropolitan Community Church United Church of Christ in the Valley, North Hollywood''To be queer is to be authentically one's self--the self that God, the Ultimate Queer, longs for us to be. Hood has brought his own queries and queering to Scripture in order to free us all from the bonds of normativity. Mixing exegetical reflection and an earthy practical theology, Hood offers the church a broader vision of the Divine, inviting us to reclaim what is queerest and best about our story and to see how our lives, in all their uniqueness, comprise God's story in this world.''--Ashlee Wiest-Laird, Pastor, The First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts --Wipf and Stock Publishers''Through bold interpretation of scripture and gentle vulnerability, Jeff Hood masterfully reminds us that normativity is the great sin of our time.''--Justin Hancock, Author and Disability Theologian, Missional Wisdom Foundation''Jeff Hood's new book The Courage to Be Queer is both queer and courageous. Hood expands on our understanding of queer identity to see it as a category of liberation open to anyone who is willing to let go of their fears and connect with what is most sacred and most true in their being. When we do that, he suggests, we are in a position to change the world. Hood intriguingly turns the table on our typical reactions to what is marginalized in our culture as that which should be discounted, pitied, or shunned. For Hood it is in these places of difference where we can find an authentic spirituality that speaks to our core being. From such places a revitalized Christian theology is possible that can embrace what is best, what is most wild, and most queer in us.''--Sharon Groves, Faith Organizer and Social Justice Worker''The Courage to Be Queer, is a challenging read not for the weak of mind or spirit. For Hood this is a theological, heartfelt exercise of courage genuinely rooted in his love of all humanity. This love envelops his more normative conservative friends on one end, all the way to his associates uninvited to sit in traditional pews. I invite you to get lost in Hood's use of the word queer and explore this path of salvation.'' --Duncan E. Teague, Unitarian Universalist Minister & Faith Outreach Consultant, Georgia Equality''Dr. Hood's explorations of the Queer are relevant, raw and liberating. His writing led me to question my own limited constructs in ways that stretched and then freed me. His book is an experience of self-discovery and a courageous revelation of love.'' --Celeste Holbrook, Sexual Health Educator and Consultant''One of the great challenges of youth ministry is helping young people embrace the unique person God is calling them to be, Dr. Hood's The Courage to Be Queer offers a clear path for radical dialogue that will lead to radical spaces of openness, inclusion and empowerment. If you want to learn how to change the world, read this book!''--Jason Redick, Youth Minister, Holy Covenant United Methodist Church''Jeff Hood's book is a thoughtful and personal theological manifesto, in the best Baptist traditions of soul freedom and liberation. I'm excited to be a part of some of the conversations this book starts!''--David Weasley, Chairman of the Board, Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists''Radical, readable, and intellectually rigorous, The Courage to be Queer reveals a theology of God the Queer that speaks to everyone through their individual context or queerness. The author does an extraordinary job of making advanced theological concepts accessible and inviting, and all with sound Biblical references. Hood shakes the demons out of the Bible and leaves only love.''--Kittredge Cherry, Author & Founder of Jesusinlove.org''Jeff Hood reminds us that 'theology is based in story.' The Courage to Be Queer is filled with stories of life-giving liberation. Hood brings the resurrection close and knocks the cobwebs out of obsolete theologies traditionally used to demean and diminish to remind us of our own uniqueness or queerness. This book has rebooted my allegiance to the inclusive, compassionate, radically creative and loving God who truly is 'the queerest of the queer.'''--Mike Wright-Chapman, Associate Pastor, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Brings the Wind of the Spirit to those who have been yearning for refreshing By Trudie Barreras Without doubt, this is a theological study that will be completely rejected by many of those who most need to hear what Jeff Hood is saying. On the other hand, it is definitely going to bring the Wind of the Spirit into other hearts that have been waiting and yearning for just such a refreshing. At the beginning of the book, the reader will find glowing endorsements from nearly three dozen extremely diverse individuals, including Kittredge Cherry, whose comments initially led me to purchase this book.Hood’s basic premise, the understanding that in the person and teaching of Jesus, God fully intends to confront and forever discredit the “normative” of human belief and practice, is not new. What IS new is his use of the term “queer” as a noun, a verb, and even – capitalized – as a Name of God and the Divine Principle in Jesus and those who follow. Although even those who, like me, agree with Hood’s thesis may find that endless repetition of a term so often used as a pejorative is disturbing, I urge them to “hang in there”. What Hood has to say is important enough to allow the concepts to come through regardless of the (intentionally employed) shock value of his vocabulary.I frankly acknowledge that I have never adhered to – perhaps a better descriptor might be “been enslaved by” – the normative concepts of law and conformity that bind so many people who believe they are following the Christ. My parents before me were “free thinkers”, and when my dad Ted eventually became an active participant in a church congregation, it was only after informing the pastor that this action in no way implied acceptance of all the doctrines and premises of that particular group. In his own mystical encounters with “Cephas” (St. Peter), Ted was told, “Don’t belong to church, belong to God.” Other aspects of my own life and belief have indeed led me to define myself as queer, which is a marvelously NON-DEFINING term indeed. As a result, I can wholeheartedly applaud Jeff Hood’s book as affirming my perception of what the Cosmic Consciousness – or in his term, the Queer – has in mind for the ultimate evolution of the human species.

Pigg Jeff Hood’s The Courage to Be Queer (Wipf & Stock, 2015) is a book whose time has come. Rooted in the traditions of biblical exegesis, liberation theology, personal, autobiographical story, and the continually growing conceptions of queer theory—a very broad term that attempts to chart the concept of difference from “normativity” that seeks to restrict and to force one back into the closet—The Courage to Be Queer provides a series of very interesting and potentially mind-opening readings of texts such as the creation stories of Genesis, the book of Ecclesiastes, the book of the prophet Johan, Jesus in the gospels, stories in Acts, various epistles of Paul, and finally Revelation. Much is pack in the roughly 118 pages of writing. Some readers may be shocked by the number of times the word “queer” appears in the book. That is no accident, for with each utterance, Hood intends to shake lose the normativity that threatens to keep one from understanding God, the self, and the other. Queerness is a part of all of creation, even located in the very nature of God. Biblical texts have been used as instruments to bludgeon GLBTQA individuals for decades, if not centuries. Hood provides a kind of food for the journey of rethinking the harms that binaries have caused and exactly how those binaries have been imposed in ways that actually destroy the real life—the real queer potential—of the text itself. The following words written in the Conclusion bring the book’s many ideas together well. Hood writes that"The Courage to Be Queer calls the individual past such constructed, normative identities to a space of individualized queerness. The only way to mature past the dichotomy of “us” and “them” is to willingly embrace the queerness in our own self and in the other. Oppositionality in identity and relationship creates violence. We must meet the Queer within so that the Queer in us will connect with the Queer in the rest of the cosmos. …The Queer is here to save us from the wars we perpetuate against each other. As long as we are fighting on the outside, we are distracted from the war that so desperately needs to be fought on the inside. The war between normativity and queerness is raging, and our only weapon to fight back is the love and strength of the Queer within.” (108-09)These are powerful words to challenge any reader—to help any reader to embrace the queer image within and to seek the importance that such a recognition can create for community. Brandan Robertson writes a framing Forward that helps to set up the challenge of reading. Kim Jackson provides the final words. She is one who thought of herself as already transformed, but becomes one for whom the book opens greater understanding to that experience. The Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood is an evangelical who is remaking the meaning of that word. The queer experience can be jarring, upsetting, liberating, and transforming. For those readers who give this book a careful reading, it will not only help them to see Hood’s vision, but also a vision for themselves as transformed.

That is the ultimate message of this book, the third by Jeff Hood that I have read after personally meeting and worshipping with him. God embodies all possibilities of human development, but His message here on earth has been taken over by a narrow clique trying to enforce its normative vision upon humanity. Hood's ministry is explicitly aimed at the LGBT community. Whereas a conventional liberal might ask them not to give up on God because God hasn't given up on them, no matter what the church says, Hood's approach is more radical: he indicates that no queer person can give up on God because God embodies queerness. The word "queer" or some derivative therefore appears in every paragraph of this book, usually more than once. The second most often used word is "normative" which is less exclusive than "straight." We all have some dimension in which we are not normative and that's why this book is ultimately for everyone even if they are not attracted to members of the same sex. It's an easy read at just over 100 pages. Indeed the longest book by Hood that I have read is a collection of his sermons over the course of his ministry explaining how his spiritual approach to human sexuality has changed, which I recommend even more highly.

Hiding in plain sight throughout America are historic, highly private women's self-education groups. These clubs are fascinating survivors from an era following the Civil War when women couldn't apply to most colleges and were told they shouldn't leave the home. In their earliest days, the study groups also contributed to the welfare of their towns - often by helping to found their town's first library-and served to get women out of the house and into the world. Today's all-women study clubs have no civic component but still fashion their meetings as their founding great-grandmothers did, with members taking turns giving original papers. In Smart Women, author Ann Dodds Costello discusses her four-year quest to locate, often visit, and describe today's 100-year-old, all-women study clubs, all over America, even though they do not publicize and have no central organization or knowledge of each other. Included: an invaluable, first-ever directory of most of the book's ninety-plus clubs.

The amazing thing is that the author By Barbara Greenleaf "Smart Women" tells the remarkable, unknown story of the century-old self-improvement clubs that sprang up around the United States after the Civil War. The amazing thing is that the author, Ann Costello, spent years tracking down an enormous number of these clubs that are still very much in business! They stay under the radar, so little is known about them, but their very existence speaks to the yearning for culture and education that were denied women until recent times. These "civilizers" of a rough and tumble America went on to found the libraries, art museums, orphanages, and symphonies in their cities. Today, they don't do good works as organizations and many of their members are highly educated, professional women. Still, the women continue to faithfully attend for the camaraderie, elegant refreshments, and well-researched papers the members--and the members alone-- present to their peers. Just when you think everything that can have been discovered about America has been discovered, along comes a "Smart Women" to prove you wrong. It's a rewarding work.

Helpful tool for college women's studies courses, especially to illustrate women's influence on important issues - civic, cultural, political, etc. - beginning in an era when women were supposedly involved only in affairs of home and family and long before women were given the vote. Costello has presented her research in a well-documented, easy to follow format.

By Debbie Seaman Impeccably written as well as descriptive, detailed, and highly informative, "Smart Women" introduces us to historic groups whose members have played a heretofore unsung role in the enrichment U.S. culture as well as their own intellectual lives. Full of surprising facts and engaging stories and mini-profiles, it is an important contribution to feminist studies and a "must" read for anyone interested in women's roles in history. There are amazing anecdotes even within the narrative of Ann Costello's unprecedented search for information on these often obscure women's study clubs. In a broader sense, she observes, "These groups are the essence of civilization and a part of the framework of a healthy lifestyle in a rather uncivilized and dumbed-down world."

Best Ebook Heart Land: A Place Called 'Ockley Green', by Caroline Miller

"Heart Land" is a sweet and deft look back at life in a small Ohio farming community during 1939. Friends, family and community are linked by geographic semi-isolation. Communication is slower, but people seemed to pay more attention. In Ockley Green, every one knows and (mostly) cares about everybody else. Adults try to understand and children struggle to live up to adult values. In this safe world, a bright and reckless boy with an active imagination conjures all the mischief he can cram into a year. It all begins when Bodacious Scurvy, the town’s notorious alley cat, crosses Oliver’s path and gives him an idea. This well-written novel is very much like a Norman Rockwell painting - hopeful, generous, lonely, occasionally bitter and always innocent - it’s a love story for an idyllic past that draws the main character out of his childish disregard for other people’s points of view and allows him to transcend his own limitations. The man he grows into, however, will always echo a childhood he can never leave behind. Caroline Miller’s debut novel, "Heart Land", is a fictional memoir of a boy growing up in rural Ohio between the Depression and WWII - a time of social and historic importance that still resonates with Americans. Miller's tone is often humorous and sometimes poignant. She creates a story that is easy to sink into and difficult to say good-by to. “… Heart Land wears the triple crown of literary genius: it is profound, beautiful and arresting from the first page…” - Writerface.com

Through sketches of everyday life, family, relationships, good humor and anguish we feel a genuine love and connectedness to the stories and characters. The beauty of the human experience is discovered by the young boy and we get to revel in his ever deepening understanding. I was so moved by the first few stories that I had to put the book down for a break. Was I being so easily manipulated or was this beautifully told story really that good? After finishing it I decided that great art is in the experience of it and I had a wonderful, powerful experience. Bravo to Caroline Miller.

The oldest of two brothers packs family photograph albums after his mother's passing in 1979, and the images evoke memories from 1939-40.Sometimes funny, occasionally poignant, Heart Land is a first-rate, observant look at prewar life in a small Ohio town. It is a time and place that are mythic now. Honesty, courage, and caring, friends, relatives, family and community are linked in generational and geographic semi-isolation, and every one knows and (mostly) cares about everybody else. Adults try to understand, children struggle to live up to adult values, and small incidents loom large as major life lessons are drawn from them.Integrity and compassion underlie Heart Land's sensibility. Its people are real living, breathing human beings. Miller's work is engaging; an often lyric expression of small-town Midwestern America left not so long behind, with solid, reliable echoes that still lead to a simple, but well justified life.

Verbout In a nutshell, it's the story of two young boys and their misadventure throughout one year of their young life. The story is presented through independent chapters highlighting various experiences they share. Oliver, being the older of the two, have many of the stories center around him. His mishaps, misgivings and misunderstandings. Having had the privilege of reading Caroline Miller's other excellent books, it is amazing to me how Caroline writes dialogue for children equally as well as she does for adults, somehow knowing exactly how each generation would have spoken to the other. The feelings, conversations and activities of two young boys so colorfully placed onto paper. What a gift!! Difficult to pick a favorite chapter, but if I had to it would be Herman's friends mother as she attempted to teach her son how to cook with the short time she had to live. Another favorite chapter would have to be "Of Ghosts and Goblins and Little Green Men." Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down!! I enjoy Caroline's writing for a number of reasons. Without warning she throws fun, exciting new words, Her works raise you to a different level of understanding and I am grateful to her for that. Her style of writing is so appealing, informative, intelligent, relevant, full of a lot of terrific information. Also enjoyable are her metaphors which are quite often very humorous! Although sometimes they are exact opposite and just takes your breath away! I love to linger on some of her metaphors and almost always, on her last sentence. I admire her talent!Really a must read as I believe, at least for me, are all of her books.

Larkin takes characters we all know and somehow manages to make them personable and relatable. In the time before he was a god, Odin was a tribal leader. But then, magic happens. A goddess with an apple of immortality. Honestly, Larkin had me from there. Watching his interpretation of Odin's trek to godhood (the beginning of it, at least) left me craving more. In typical Matt Larkin fashion, his action scenes are packed with excitement and some really awesome weaponry. While nothing can match the sheer beauty of his Skyfall trilogy in my mind, Ragnarok is promising to come awfully close. This is a great fantasy for those who love myth, excitement, magic, and battles against powers greater than man. Highly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Only 4 stars yet, merely because the whole series is not done. Highly recommended! By Wordwizard I enjoyed this refashioning of Norse mythology, which starts off following the adventures of the mortal Jarl Odin, and ends with him having become an immortal god and Aesir King (the Aesir being a mortal tribe as yet, except for a few). Although this is the start of a series, with unanswered questions that leave me eager for more, it is a stand-alone book, with a clear ending. Although Odin and his brothers begin the tale as normal human beings, which surprised me, this retelling remains close to the original tales. I was anxious to see how Odin would apotheosize (This isn't right, his being a human! Fix it!), and worried when things did not go his way. Although the story (written in 3rd person) primarily follows Odin, there are also bits from Sigyn's perspective as well. Although it is NOT a romance novel (thank goodness), there is both lust and love of various kinds. Odin is a hero with a destiny to fulfill, and pride which he recognizes he must overcome (as well as some mild vulgarity). Although I can't yet give it five stars, as a classic that will stand for all time, because the series is not yet completed, I suspect that I will be happy to revise this later. There were a number of typos, for those who care about such things, but nothing too serious, so I've just sent a full list to the author. If the Kindle Free Sample you read is now free of errors, you can assume the rest have been fixed too. At any rate, it would be a shame to let that stop you from enjoying this treat!I received a free e-copy through LibraryThing for the purposes of providing an unbiased review. If it has been helpful, please remember to click the "Yes" button!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. gods, goddesses and tales of old with a twist of the beginning!! By lcsdr60 Taking from the Norse gods of old, Larkin gives you an exciting and entertaining view into the before they were gods time. Odin, Loki and many more that were to be gods in a time of their own humanity. Before Odin became a god and his life was but a short period of time in the lives of the immortal. This story even goes into very major detail of many of the legends that began with the gods of werewolves, and spirits. This read kept me reading to the end. I could barely sit the book down long enough to rest my eyes before needing to get back to it. Great read and a new way of looking at the tales of the Norse gods.

After the Dark, by Kathy Otten

From the Author I had fun writing this short story as it is the first one I've written based on a true event. The Great Molasses Flood took place in Boston in January 1919 and part of the North End of Boston was wiped out my the molasses, including the firehouse where my characters are trapped. The other challenge was to write a romance in which the two characters are buried in the dark and separated by debris through more than half the story. I hope I was able to execute it well enough to transport you into the collapsed firehouse and you enjoyed your time with Liam and Rosalie.

27 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Learn to boil water! By Booked This is a good intro book that eliminates the need for some of the first books I bought on C#. When compared to other "cookbooks", however, this book is incredibly weak (see: XSLT Cookbook, SQL Cookbook). If you have used C# for more than 6 months, you will know how to iterate over an array, to use String.IsNullOrEmpty, get the index of a value within a string, and use a generic arraylist. These are just some of the junior "recipes" you'll see in this book. The "recipes" just exercise the fundamentals (i.e. how to boil water) rather than how the fundamentals work together to solve complex problems in elegant ways. The easier the concept, the more information. There isn't really any analysis or best-practice justification present. I'd like to see some performance analysis of generics or at least some depth on partial methods. Nothing to see here for mid-level developers. Not written or organized poorly, just simple. If it were titled "Intro to C# by example", I'd give it a higher score.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. C# 3.0 Cookbook is an excellent resource By William Hallahan I have develops software professionally for over 30 years. Most of what I've written is C and C++. The "C# Cookbook" made the transition to C# painless, and the newer "C# 3.0 Cookbook" is better, because it's more up-to-date. Chapters exist for Language Integrated Query (LINQ), Strings and Characters, Classes and Structures, Generics, Collections, Iterators, Partial Types, and Partial Methods, Exception Handling, Diagnostics, Delegates, Events, and Lambda Expressions, Regular Expressions, Data Structures and Algorithms, Filesystem I/O, Reflection, Web, XML, Networking, Security, Threading and Synchronization, Toolbox, and finally, Numbers and Enumerators. The book could be best described a significant set of well-documented coding examples for someone who already knows the base-language of C#, however, there are so many examples, I expect a computer-competent person could probably learn much of the language of C# just from the examples. For someone who knows nothing about C# at all, I would recommend a different book to learn C# syntax ("C# in a Nutshell" by Oreilly is a good choice), however, all such books that I have seen do little to help learn the immense set of .NET libraries, and leave the user unable to program anything very sophisticated, so I strongly recommend that anyone just learning the language also purchase "C# 3.0 Cookbook too.It contains many bite-size written code examples that have saved me an immense amount of time, it's well written, and I believe that most C# programmers would find this book would save them lots of time.

These solutions and tips can save developers a lot of time.Steve and Jay have done a great job of improving on the 3rd edition, and have woven in many of the new C# 6.0 features. As always this book is designed to take a reader who already knows C# to the next level, by explaining the how and why associated with common C# development problems. The C# recipes provide a clear description of the problem, well written code examples, and commentary to explain why each recipe works. Readers will come away with a better understanding of the C# language, algorithms, and how to think about and approach common real world programming problems.Steve Munyan - Reviewer of the C# Cookbook 4th Edition

By Matteo This book provides a quick walkthrough to vRealize Orchestrator(most of the book content will be still be useful to users of vSphere 5.5) showing what to do to set it up and to create your first automation workflows. Orchestrator documentation is kinda scarce so if you plan to set it up you should give this book a shot!

Great tutorial to get acquainted and start productive work with vRO By Stefan As reviewer of this book and a complete novice to Orchestrator, this book turned out to be the ideal introduction to this topic that I ever wanted to dive into but never had the time for. Without consuming much time, it quickly leads to productive and motivating results. It is much more useful than any other introduction to this topic (including tutorials by VMware).Especially, I like chapter 6 where you get a very good and practical introduction into JavaScript.

Suicidal thoughts had comforted Rhoda since she was a child. She never actually wanted to die. But that changed on a cool autumn day in 1969 when the lifeless body of her infant daughter was pulled from the banks of Clinch River. Distraught, Rhoda set out on a journey to get as far away from War Gap as she could. With bus tickets and the use of her exhausted legs, she made it all the way to Grand Saline, Texas. She fell on the ground in the middle of nowhere and placed a gun to her head. Only, it wasn’t the middle of nowhere. It was one of the few farms owned by a Black family in all of Van Zandt county. It was also the location of a recent murder fueled by racism. Rhoda was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was she?

Love Towe's books, and this one is no exception.Set a few decades ago, the story touches on issues of violence, mental health, racism and suicide. Now, that being said, it's not all dark and sad. It's got a fast pace, and despite being so short, some very well developed characters. Your protagonist is pitiable at times, and at others, you want to stand up and cheer for her. The supporting characters are few (other than in mentions by the 2 main characters), and flesh out the story well.I'm terrible at writing book reviews, because I am worried about spoiling a book for someone by mentioning too much. So, forgive the vagueness.Rhoda is our main character, and she's suicidal. I mean, very seriously, going to do it, suicidal. But, Ben interrupts her. Not in a kindly way, but in an angry way. He has enough issues without her baggage adding to it. He's just lost a wife. Violently. And, being a black man in a backwoods, racist area (Hello, KKK), he doesn't have even a hope for justice. In the short time span of this story, Rhoda finds a bit of a reason to keep going, and things turn out far different than I had anticipated.

Gripping read By Cat From the first scene of the novel I felt as if I were down in the dirt with Rhoda with my fist clutching a gun to my head in an attempt to end the pain. The author did a great job of evoking the senses throughout the book. Silencer deals with issues of loss, suicide, rascism and determination, not easy topics to write or read about but was it was a compelling read and steam-rolled on towards an equally as intense closing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Silencer By renee nadabomb cherry Mental illness is a tough topic to cover. The author helps bring some understanding through this story. Mental abuse was generational in the family. Grandma Vickers was verbally abusive to her daughter, Sarah. In turn, Sarah was verbally/physically abusive to her child, Rhoda. When Rhoda meets Ben, a farmer and landowner, baby Nashe and Paumina, she encounters a more sinister form of abuse from the town folks of Grand Saline, TX during the 1960's. It's an eye opener page after page!I plan to read more works by Julie Roberts Towe and rate this novella at 3.8 stars.

Fire Up Your Writing Brain: How to Use Proven Neuroscience to Become . . . . . by Susan Reynolds By Marie This is so productive for the educated/intelligent writer since it is not only backed by neuroscience but actual methodology of how to force one's brain into obeying the laws set for it in being able to write incredibly. Everyone who wishes to improve in their writing should definitely read this and keep it on their writing bookshelf for when they feel they are flagging/straying from the perfect path in their works.

A Must-Read for Writers of All Levels By Meera Lester Susan Reynolds, the author and/or editor of forty-five books, has written a sure-fire winner in her latest offering, FIRE UP YOUR WRITING BRAIN, a writing reference book from Writers Digest Books. Geared toward the untold legions of aspiring writers and those who want to become more creative, productive, and successful, this easy-to-understand manual belongs on every writer's bookshelf. I found the practical insights, solutions, tips, and strategies to be well-integrated into ground-breaking neuroscience. The author has organized the book into six parts or phases with twelve solid chapters that reveal how to ignite, reinforce, nurture, fuel, sustain, and reward your writing brain. If you've ever suffered through a sagging middle of the book or wondered how your plot got off track, you can find insights in Chapter Five. If you want to find out why writing isn't for sissies, read Chapter Nine. However, if you have honed your brain as a powerful writing tool to push through the entire story and are ready to begin the editing process, you'll want to pay close attention to Chapter Twelve since it details how and when to invoke your editing brain and how the writing brain and editing brain differ.I am a friend and colleague of Susan Reynolds and have long respected her work. When I learned she was writing this book, I knew I would have to buy it, and I'm glad I did. The next time I get stuck in a story I'm writing, I'll turn to FIRE UP YOUR WRITING BRAIN for insights, inspiration, and some self-help strategies.

As I knew that William Le Queux wrote in the first part of the 20th century I did not expect to find an adventure story so full of twists, turns and excitement. A cross between the Alan Quatermain stories and the jungle tales of Tarzan, this story, moves with never a lull from a boy's school in England to the jungles, deserts and rainforests of the Dark Continent.Sent by an uncaring Uncle to a boy's preparatory school outside London, young Scarsmere, nick-named "Scars," finds a close friend in the strangely pale-complected Omar from an unnamed African kingdom. As time passes and both boys reach the brink of manhood, Omar is summoned home by his mother, the Naya of Mo, also referred to as the Great White Queen. When Omar invites Scar to accompany him to his African homeland, Scar learns that Omar is actually the crown prince of a wealthy kingdom whose geography keeps it well hidden from the known world. With bleak prospects in England, Scars decides to accompany his best friend on what seems to be a wonderful adventure. What follows is treachery, betrayal, deprivation, adventure, danger and war in a non-stop series of developments that forces the young men to grow up quickly and forges their friendship into devoted brotherhood as Scar bravely accompanies Omar from freedom to captivity and slavery to the opportunity for Omar to sit upon the ancient Emerald Throne of Mo. Along the way the friends encounter duplicious courtiers, a schemeing queen, vicious Arab rulers, cruel slavers, and every manner of villain. But their journey to their destiny is not without allies: Kona, a black African chieftan and his brave warriors; Galiba, a high minister of Mo, who is faithful to the ancient ways; and the beautiful Liola, whose goodness wins Omar's heart.High adventure and dramatic action is the hallmark of this story. I enjoyed it very much. I hope you enjoy it as well.

The book is four mystery short stories - HEADACHE, HEARTACHE, NECKACHE, and BACKACHE that run the gauntlet from kidnapping, murder to comic books....The stories are set in the 1980's - the gum shoe trying to make a living, always two steps away from true love, and surrounded by dirty streets and crooked people, but also a few that believe in hope and justice. The stories are also used to showcase the soon to be released TRIPLEYE TRILOGY with Eliot Cross as the main character. I enjoyed the author's crisp and down to earth style - the look back at a different age when it seemed there were only bad criminals and justice was always reachable. A quick read that will peak your interest for more - all the parts for a good mystery.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thoroughly enjoyable! By DragonOne It seems there was a lot going on in Columbus, OH in the late eighties. Private Detective Eliot Cross is kept busy solving crimes, some of which he was hired to do and one or two that just show up in his daily life. I could have spent more time with this wise-cracking gumshoe with attitude. I loved his old-fashioned principles and no-nonsense approach to dealing with people and their crimes. I especially liked his dialogue with brought a genuine snigger to my lips; a lovely throwback to the classic one-liners of the genre. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An interesting book with four different stories By Linda Thompson, Host of The Authors Show Eliot Cross is an interesting character who gets himself into interesting situations. This little book is comprised of four short stories, all about Cross in different situations. While the character flows from one story to the next, the stories are rather disjointed. I was never quite sure who Cross was supposed to be in each of these vignettes; is he a detective who gets himself into weird situations almost by accident, or is he just a dude bumbling along as a part time PI who tends to stumble over bodies. As Hegenberger’s first book, he has done a good job of setting the stage; I do hope that for his future books he employs an editor to pick up on words left out, or misused, and if he keeps the short story format, that they follow one another a bit more seamlessly. I am interested in reading the second book because I enjoy watching an authors’ evolution and growing maturity with each passing book.
