It's not often one finds baseball, prewar Germany, the supernatural, and the plight of the Jews combined so seamlessly, let alone artfully. Or at all.Matt Caldwell's The Lost Tribe does strain credulity, but he miraculously pulls it off. The main character, Harry Pike, is a sportswriter who leads a ragtag baseball team into a Nazi Germany primed for war. His Shepherds make their stand against Aryan supremacy with a team that includes men, and one woman, who were even treated as outcasts in America. The team must fight the elements, conniving Germans, harsh living conditions, crooked umpires, political intrigue, mortal danger, and constant surveillance. Not surprisingly, the series requires seven games. Not surprisingly, the plot consists of much more than is noted here. The story is rendered skillfully. The scenes shift adroitly. The loose ends all tie. Humanity prevails. Not without sacrifice.Alas, Harry has a hidden agenda, and hidden gifts, and that's where the supernatural comes in.Read it. You'll learn a lot. And imagine more.

I liked the setting and the premise, a bit of a different look before the horror got crazy during WW2! I am an avid baseball fan and the baseball part of the story was fun and very dear to my heart! It's hard not to ruin the story, but I liked the choices for the characters and how they we intertwined like the stings inside a baseball! Especially Jane! Looking for to more books by Matthew Caldwell.

Did she go too far? Dallas Marshall is beautiful, rich and...relentless. Once she decides she wants to be with Avery nothing will stand in her way. But becoming a powerful vampire who cannot control her hunger threatens to push Avery further out of her reach. And that is not all. Dallas now finds herself up against an ancient evil that seeks to be reborn through her. Can he let go of his lost beloved? Avery's heart has grieved for Luna, his lost love, for decades. When Dallas forces her way into his life, he cannot deny the eerie similarities between the two unimaginably powerful and dangerous women. There are times when a quick smile, a turn of the head, makes him wonder: is Dallas merely a descendant of his beloved Luna...or is something far more insidious at work? It takes everything Avery has to control Dallas. Can he save her from the evil that has lived in darkness for centuries waiting for its chance to devour? Its time has almost come. Together or apart, Dallas and Avery will come face-to-face with old enemies and strange allies as they run headlong to the brink of death and beyond to battle the darkness which has slaughtered Luna's descendants for generations. And even then, the victory they have fought for may be forever denied to them. For nothing is as it seems.

By Alphalaydie I think this writer is capable of many things ... she drew me in through the 1st and 2nd books. With this book, however, she seemed to have lost steam with her storyline and plot. She added some elements (see below because it would involve some spoilers) that took away from the storyline. In fact, I think this story was all over the place and I kept shaking my head wondering why she decided to added certain twists when it would take away from the theme of the initial two books -- black slave falls in love with white man and must overcome her hate/self-hate/racial vengeance. This story ends with ridiculous (or beyond farfetched even for a vampire novel) elements that never really resolve any of the issues that persisted throughout the first two books. Honestly, I was extremely sad when I came to "The End." I had so many expectations (and hopes) for how A.D. would end this trilogy and was very disappointed. I can't really talk about the flaws in the story without giving the spoilers, but suffice it to say that this book was not a great end to what started out as a love story through pain (despite Avery's almost maudlin and cringe worthy concern for Luna's ancestors in book 2) and turned into some celestial space opera. And the epilogue? Just skip it. It is worthless and adds nothing to the overall story.******************** (Comments with spoilers/Don't read if you don't want to know!) ************************A.D. initially started with Luna, a slave, that fell in love with a white man. It ends in book 3 as Luna is an alien goddess that was reincarnated after her death in book 2. W.T.F. By making Luna a goddess you take away from her story as a slave. We are no longer reading about how a slave deals with slavery and loving "the enemy," but how a goddess deals with love. Huh? The whole point of the story was lost (in my opinion) by making Luna an omniscient/omnipotent God that fell in love with a human. I wanted to see (even if you want to throw in re-incarnation to bring her back) how Luna resolved her love for one man and hate for a race as a human, not a god. I felt like A.D. just gave up what she was trying to do with the first books, and decided to just end the story with "She's a god. And who cares she was a slave in love but in hate. That was never the issue. The end."What made the story even harder to follow was the time jumps between chapters -- as the reader, you swing back and forth between Luna/Goddess in the now, Luna as a slave and the Aztec warrior in sometime BC. I understand A.D. wanted to give us the complete story by switching between times and places, but it was a little mind jarring. And she did not respect the rules of "time" travel. In one chapter, she (Luna the Goddess) goes back in time to right the wrong done a boy vampire and (haha!) fast forward to the present, the same boy vampire is able to remember what never actually occurred even after Luna the Goddess made some historical changes. Huh? If you changed the past, then the present never happened so how can you remember it? You can't -- even if you are a vampire.

By Kindle Customer As I prepared to read Dark Requiem, my only thought was, I hope Avery rise from the depth of sorrow, loneliness and despair. In the previous Darkling books, the writer left me with a longing for Avery's unadulterated happiness. As I read, embraced the writer's words, (she's an excellent writer by the way), the story took a life of its own and went in a direction I least expected. The book revealed Luna's existence before she was born into the realm of humanity. The dark entity that consumed her after she became a vampire story unfold. The writer took the power of love and transferred it across time. I must say I was truly amazed. This book, however, is not quite about Avery but he is a part of this story, and as I read the last page in this trilogy, I walked away with a smile on my face. Bravo AD Koboah, a job well done.

I didn't suspect, Luna and Dallas could be as one. Beautiful thoughWe sure did wonder how and if Luna was getting back to Avery.Read the first and the second book and then book three, amazing

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Worth every penny. Very high quality. By Ron Allen Tyndale Select NLTI have just opened the box with the newest edition of Tyndale’s New Living Translation Select Bible in brown goatskin. It is amazing. The upscale binding is satisfyingly soft and floppy in the hand. The natural full-grain brown goatskin cover is edged-lined to maximize it’s suppleness. With two brown ribbons markers, perimeter stitching, and gold foil frame around the inside and matching brown inside cover it is has a premium appearance. It has gold over red art-gilding on the page edges. And the pages are Smyth-sewn. The quality of this hand made Bible speaks of durability as well as beauty. The trim size is about 5¼ by 8¼ by 1½ inches. I love the fact the cover is plain with no lettering. The spine has a very simple but classy gold lettering imprint of Holy Bible, with New Living Translation and Tyndale. But where it really shines for me in the single column text layout in 8.75 point type. This is a reader’s Bible. The printing is dark and contrasts nicely with the high quality Bible paper. No words of Christ in red for this edition which is my personal favorite. The line over line printing minimizes show through for easy readability and it has generous margins. As a study bible, it has over 40,000 cross references. I really like the dictionary/concordance resource of this edition. This is a high quality, durable and beautiful easy to carry edition of my favorite contemporary translation. Assembled by Jongbloed’s bindery in the Netherlands this is the finest Bible ever to come from Tyndale. I am going to see that my grandchildren all get one for graduation gifts. I give this an unequivocal five star rating.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The material quality compliments the eternal quality of this Book By Joel L. Watts For the bibliophile, there is barely anything more joyful than a finely pieced book. Yes, it is about the interior, but so too the exterior. In fact, bibliophiles know you can judge a book by its cover. There is also a select group of bibliophiles who do more than collect books, but so too collect bibles. I myself have numerous hard copies of the Scriptures, in different translations, with different covers, in different editions. There are two holding top-tier in my collection. The first is the Cambridge KJV with Apocrypha. It is black calfskin leather. The second is a hardback copy of the REB. It has a book cover, but nothing else. These two versions, materially, strike me as being beautiful and thus are the two I cherish. But now I have a third. The Tyndale Select NLT: Select Reference Edition. Immediately, I am struck the simplistic majesty of this edition. The smell. The feel. The size. The weight. Everything about this version makes me want to admire it for its quality, but I know that I will be able to pass this one along.Long time readers of my blog (UnsettledChristianity.com) know that I have a special place in my heart for the New Living Translation — I'm a NLTphile, I guess. I find that it is more than suitable for any reader of the bible, regardless of age or denominational affiliation. It is readable, both in church and as an individual, providing a modern rendering of Scripture while being faithful to our tradition of English translations. It deserves to be read daily. But, with each reading, a traditional bible will lose its consistency — at least in material. With the Tyndale Select NLT, NTLphiles and bibliophiles meet in their desire to have a beautiful, generational heirloom bible. It is made of black goatskin (although brown is available), which provides for a lifetime durability — and I'm guessing, not just my lifetime either. The feel of this bible, because of the goatskin, is supple. It is Smyth-sewn, allowing the bible to lay flat. It includes two ribbons. The edges to this hand-bound bible (by Jongbloed (Netherlands)) are art-gilded. The text is the single column NLT, with cross references and other notes familiar to NLT readers.I'll include some pictures below — but I'm afraid they won't do it justice. Rather, let me tell those wondering about the price: You will not regret this. This is not a "gift bible" (those $10 bibles you pick up for a special occasion that last for a few months) but it truly is a gift. It is one of those things you give to someone when you care for them and want them to use it daily, for years, and maybe a generation or two. The material quality compliments the eternal quality of this Book, and should give the gifter the hope that when the memory of the presentation has long past, this book will endure, perhaps passed on to another's hands, giving light in a dark world. For years, Cambridge was the premier manufacturer of high quality bibles; however, the Tyndale Select NLT: Select Reference Edition rivals them in every detail, even providing a better quality leather, in my opinion.

By Randy A Brown Tyndale has entered the premium / ultra-premium Bible market with their Tyndale Select NLT: Select Reference Edition – a hand-crafted edition printed by Jongbloed. It has the 2015 edition of the NLT and is available in either calf skin or goatskin. Bother covers are available in black or brown, and with or without thumb index. I’ve been using the black goatskin edition for a few weeks now and here are my thoughts about its design and construction. To see photos for this review go to BibleBuyingGuide.com. - disclaimer - I was not paid for this review :-)BindingThe cover is black goatskin. It’s flexible but not so flexible that I can’t hold it flat with one hand for easy reading. The grain is pebbly and looks and feels elegant. It’s sewn around the perimeter with very tight stitching. It has a synthetic liner with edge-lining. Like other Jongbloed editions it does have a stiff hinge. It’s Smyth-sewn and has no trouble lying flat once the hinge loosens up.It has a slight yapp (where the leather overhangs over the page-edges). I would call this a semi-yapp, although it isn’t even mentioned on the box or in the product description. It gives the Bible a more elegant look and draws attention to the art-gilted edges. I prefer at least a little bit of yapp because the cover will bend where my hand grasps it anyway. Having a yapp means the cover is already conformed to my hand and is more uniform than just having a bend where I hold it.A gold gilt-line on the liner traces where the liner and outer cover meet. This frames the text-block when the Bible is open and gives it some sparkle. This is one of those features that I love when a publisher takes the time and expense to add. It’s the equivalence of adding pearl block inlays to the fretboard, etching a pearl logo into the headstock, or the entire pickguard of a guitar. They don’t affect the sound, but they sure do make a guitar look nice. Seeing that gilt-line adds to the luxury of this Bible. A Bible that’s made to be luxurious should have these special touches. The overall size is perfect for me. I didn’t really know what the perfect size was, but I had an idea of the range. I knew I would know it when I saw it. Well now I’ve seen it. The book-block is 5.25 x 8.25 x 1.5. The cover is 6 x 8.75 x 1.625. This size is easy to hold and carry. It looks and feels right. To be honest this is the size I was hoping the Clarion would be.PaperThe paper feels like it’s in the lower 30’s for gsm (but that’s just a guess). It has a slight eggshell tint that helps readability. This is my favorite color for paper. Opacity isn’t bad at all. I can see that there are lines on the other side but I can’t read them. In my reading I didn’t have any issues with distraction. The page-edges are art-gilt (red under gold). Art-gilt is a must for ultra-premium editions. When opened the pages reveal a red that’s easy on the eyes. It’s dark enough to look great but not too bold to draw attention to itself. I would call it a dark salmon. It’s about halfway between Cambridge and Allan art-gilt. In my book that’s about perfect for red under gold gilting.TypographyThis is a single-column layout in paragraph format. References are placed in the outer margin and footnotes are placed in the footer. The setting has features that I look for:• Poetry set to stanzas – even in the NT• Letters indented (Ezra)• OT quotes identifiedWhere this setting really shines is in the Psalms. The wide single column allows for enough room to make the poetic setting work perfectly. The only time a line has a single word is when it’s done on purpose. The font is 8.75 Lexicon in black letter with a generous leading. The boldness is just about perfect for comfortable reading in most lighting conditions. It’s bolder than average but not so bold that it burns your eyes. I would call it a semi-bold. Of course the print quality is sharp and consistent throughout.Verse numbers are small and can be a little difficult to find when searching for verses. The designers chose readability over searchability. It’s difficult to excel at both and to be honest I read more than search, although I would like verse numbers to be a little easier to find when teaching, preaching, or studying. It has line-matching to improve readability. Line-matching is one of those features that once you have it you don’t go back, and it works well in this edition. It’s like upgrading to good coffee. You can’t go back to bad coffee. You will if you have to but you won’t enjoy it. Line-matching does that for readability. It’s very rare for the lines to nit match up perfectly in the Tyndale.Due to the width of the single column the text never feels crowded. The column is 3.625” wide and has around 71 characters across. This will give you an average between 12 and 14 words per line.Section headings are in bold italics. They stand out enough to be helpful but not so much that they become annoying. I find them both easy to use and easy to ignore. The header includes the book name with the chapter that starts on that page and the page number. The inner margin is .5”. This brings the text out of the gutter so it doesn’t bend. When I’m reading text that bends into the gutter I sometimes have trouble figuring out which line to start on when I go to a new line because the end of the line is vertically in a different place than the beginning of the line. That’s usually why I prefer narrower columns, but this Bible doesn’t have that problem. I found the next line every time without having to think about it.Another thing that improves readability is the lack of reference keys. I know those keys are handy, but I use references so little that I prefer to have a cleaner text. This places the emphasis on readability rather than studyability (I put this word on the Internet, so if it wasn’t already a word… it’s a word now). Some verses have asterisks within the text. These mark some references and all footnotes. If a reference has an asterisks then it shows where something is quoted from. I would prefer to have a different symbol for each since they’re placed in two different locations. This does help keep the test cleaner. The only issue with keying to the footnotes is you have to look for the verse number of the verse you’re in.ReferencesThere are over 40,000 cross references. There are no references keys in the text, but the references in the margin are labeled with the chapter and verse numbers. One thing I like about the way the references are printed is it doesn’t have ch. for references in the same book. It actually gives the book name. To me this looks cleaner and is easier to follow because it’s more uniform. This is a minor point, but to me that small detail stands out. Here are a few samples for comparison:• Genesis 1:1 – Ps 89:11; 102:25; Isa 42:5; 48:13; Jn 1:1-2• Matthew 17:20 – Mt 21:21; Mk 11:23; Lk 17:6; 1 Cor 13:2• Mark 11:23 – x• John 1:1 – Gen 1:1; Phil 2:6; 1 Jn 1:1; 5:20• 1 John 1:1 – Jn 1:1, 4, 14; 1 Jn 4:14One feature that I think is brilliant is for parallel references. It gives the chapter and then the range of verses it covers followed by the references. They’ve placed two parallel lines (like this: //) to show when a reference is for a parallel verse. This is a visual queue that lets you know easily what kind of reference it is. It’s easy to understand. I didn’t even have to look it up to figure out what it meant. I love that. This should be standard in Bible publishing. Here are some examples:• Matthew 28:16-20 – Lk 24:36-49; Jn 20:19-23• Mark 16:14-18 – Mt 28:16-20; Lk 24:36-49; Jn 20:19-23; Ac 1:6-8• Luke 24:36-49 – Mt 28:16-20; Jn 20:19-23• John 20:19-23 – Mt 28:16-20; Lk 24:36-49• Acts 1:6-8 – xFootnotesFootnotes appear in the footer of the page and have the chapter and verse number that they correspond to. Textual footnotes shows literal renderings and marks them as Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek. They also show alternate renderings, manuscript variants, where something was quoted from (and identifies if it was quoted from a Greek version of the OT and includes the Greek version), cultural and historical information (for places, things, and people), the meaning of names when it’s relevant to the meaning of the text (used as word-play), and weights and measures. There are a lot of footnotes and they’re helpful in study and improving understanding.Concordance / DictionaryIt has a 119-page concordance/dictionary combo. It gives the part of speech and a short definition. This is a good tool for research and study. Here are a few examples with the number of references given:• Christ (n) Son of God, Messiah, Anointed One, see also Jesus, Messiah - 95• Faith (n) reliance, loyalty, or complete trust in God; a system of religious beliefs; see also Believe, Trust – 57• Faithful (adj) firm in adherence, utterly loyal; see also Loyal, Trustworthy – 43• Faithfulness (n) the quality of steadfast loyalty or firm adherence to promises – 15• God, Gods (n) eternal, infinite Spirit; Creator, Redeemer, sovereign Lord; impotent pagan deity; image of pagan deity (made of wood, metal, or stone); see also Idols(s) – 89• God-breathed (KJV) – 1• Godliness (n) devotion to God; piety; see also Righteousness – 4• Praise, Praises (n) worship; commendation; value, merit – 18• Praise, Praised, Praises, Praising (v) to worship, commend, or give honor to – 44• Pray, Prayed, Praying, Prays (v) to address God with adoration, confession, supplication, or thanksgiving; to intercede - 42• Prayer, Prayers (n) conversation with God – in praise, thanksgiving, or intercession – 20Obviously there’s quite a bit here to help in study and sermon or class prep.MapsThere are 8 pages with 12 full-color maps. They cover routes, land divisions, and topography. They’re printed on thick, non-glossy paper. This is the kind of paper I like for maps because there isn’t a glare from the light. There isn’t an index to maps, which would have been helpful since the maps don’t have a lot of annotations.Maps include:• World of the Patriarchs• Exodus from Egypt (does not show any possible Red Sea crossings. Shows multiple possible mountains for Mount Sinai)• Kingdoms of Israel (United, Divided)• Assyrian and Babylonian Empires• Greek Empire• Old Testament Jerusalem• New Testament Jerusalem• Roman Division of Palestine• Paul’s Missionary Journeys• Paul’s Journey to Rome• Roman Empire and the Spread of ChristianityRibbonsThere are two black ribbons. They’re long enough to pull them to the corner to open the page. The ribbons are the one thing that don’t quite feel luxurious to me. I’m not saying they’re not… but they are a lot different than I’m used to. Rather than silky, they’re made with a stretchy fabric. It’s a different approach than I would have taken. They are very flexible and don’t seem to bunch up as bad. Maybe that was the point in using this material. I am concerned about how long they would last because mine started fraying within a few days of use. Put fray-check on them ASAP!Using the Tyndale Select NLTI carried this Bible around and found that this is my favorite size for a Bible. It feels right in my hand. The font is smaller than I’ve been looking for lately (I’ve been moving toward 10-12 fonts for reading and preaching) but I didn’t have any issues reading and preaching from this Bible in the pulpit. The font is dark enough to make up for its smaller size. The emphasis is on readability and it excels at that. The goatskin cover is amazing. It’s soft and supple but I can still hold it flat in one hand to read. There are good quality tools to help with reading, study, and sermon/class prep.If I Could Change One ThingIf I were forced to make a change I would change the ribbons. That’s it. I love the size, paper, print, cover, tools, etc., but I like the more elegant ribbons found in other Jongbloed editions for Allan and Schuyler. These ribbons would not keep me from buying this Bible, but if I could change them I would.ConclusionTyndale has done well with their first ultra-premium edition. It’s hard not to when you get it hand crafted by Jongbloed. The edge-lined goatskin cover is fantastic, although it will take a little bit of breaking in to loosen the hinge. The overall size is perfect for carry, holding, and reading. The text is clean, readable, and dark just like I prefer. The tools are very useful for study and for class/sermon prep. The paper has the right thickness, feel, and color for my fingers and eyes. I highly recommend the Tyndale Select NLT: Select Reference Edition to anyone that wants a high quality NLT. I love this setting so much that I want Tyndale to make it in all major translations.Tyndale House Publishers provided this Bible free for review. I was not required to give a positive review – only an honest review. My opinions are my own.

Their legends have haunted the history books for hundreds of years, dating back to when the White Rose ruled majestically over England. On Nov 23rd 1499 a country, divided in secret, watched as King Henry sat from atop his red velvet throne. They watched with baited breath as the pretender, Perkin Warbeck, nodded his regal head and smiled towards his beautiful Irish wife. No cheers rang out it was said when the scaffolding was kicked out from under his feet. Not a word was muttered when the body of who most of the world believe to be Richard, the only living son of Edward of York was cut down. The last of the passionate, mysterious and chivalrous Plantagenet’s bloodline fell to the ground with a thousand dropped white roses from loyalist hands on that cold winter’s day. It was then said, the carriage carrying the young widow on her way home was called to a stop by a stream. The beautiful raven-haired woman exited the rig, bowed her head and dropped a single white rose into the babbling brook. As the delicate petals drifted down and into their watery grave she recited a poem, her palm laid to rest on her abdomen. It fell with no thought at all… It landed with a graceful, yet deliberate nod. So accepting was its fate. So brilliant its sacrifice. Trusting with knowledge that its loss would be felt and eventually its death, avenged…It fell with no thought at all, save one…My son… Ireland 1840 Perkin Kingston has lived his life making the right decisions. He was the eldest to the Kingston line and has always taken the role seriously. He had coupled his skills and natural talents into the perfect example of what an advisor to the royal crown should be. He held lands, tiles and more money than he could ever have need of. Most importantly, Perkin had the love of his cherished family. But…Every star does eventually fall. Shay Gallagher is used to being disappointed but when the new Laird on the hill shows up and robs her of her already dwindling household staff she has had enough. She was prepared to call the new Laird out. She was ready to slander his name and was more than willing to hate him. However, she was not prepared to find him unreasonably attractive, dangerously intelligent and slightly broken. Shay was definitely not expecting to want to know more. How could something so beautiful have so many scars… Secret upon secrets threaten Perkin and his family at every turn. Will he avenge his father? Will he restore his name after more of his past mistakes crawl out to challenge him? Will he end up like his namesake did 400 years ago? Or will the rightful heir finally take the throne…

Stacy Von Haegert delivered an emotion-filled roller coaster ride that I loved from beginning to end. For me, a good story is when the author pulls me into the world created and keeps me there to experience it fully through her words. And she did that effortlessly. I felt outrage with the heroine, Shay, for all she had to go through, but also laughed at her witty remarks and actions. Her uniqueness endured her to me as strong and independent heroine not afraid to hold her own in early Victorian society. I felt my heart beat with worry for the hero . Perkin's tortured soul will appeal to everyone, his quest noble. The story is sexy and filled with plot twists, chocked full of action and with just the right amount of steamy sex scenes to keep everyone entertained. You will want to read through this quickly, but I recommend afterwards to take a second more leisurely read to get the full impact of Perkin Kingston.Though I adored all three books in the trilogy, this one is my favorite.

By Rose85 I normally don't ready romance. The genre is not an interest to me. This series was given to me as a suggestion and I am incredibly HAPPY I decided to start with the first book and continue on to the third! The reason this series works is because a reader doesn't get bogged down with overdeveloped characters, scenes, narratives and so forth. I am allowed to IMAGINE myself as I am taken on a journey of history and romance. I can smile, laugh, cry and get angry because it comes from my own emotions. Often an author will write such a tight context imagination tends to fall sway and with Stacy Von Haegert's series that is NOT the case. The characters are developed enough to love or hate them, the scenes are written well enough as if I am looking out the window watching, the conversations remind me of natural interactions with my own family or friends. I spent a good portion of my time reading this book while savoring the luxury of time spent to relax and enjoy. Enjoy it I did. When I closed the final page, I reopened and found some of my favorite parts just to smile again. I think of history back then and the one thing the author has brought forth into the present it the development of love. A tangible, raw, sometimes fragmented emotion designed to vex our hearts and minds to no end. I am hoping to see more from this author as I would enjoy knowing more about all the characters involved. I would love to be transported to that particular time era.WAIT a moment....let me change that statement.I WAS transported to that era. I consider myself a lucky woman.

Stacy Von Haegert has taken the world of English Monarchy to captivate readers with The White Rose Trilogy to laugh, cry and dream as you love the families and all their adventures. Thank you Stacy for sharing your love of the written word!

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION “I swore an oath to be avenged on the killers of my father. I may be half a man, but I swore a whole oath” Prince Yarvi has vowed to regain a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea itself. And he must do it all with only one good hand. The deceived will become the deceiver Born a weakling in the eyes of his father, Yarvi is alone in a world where a strong arm and a cold heart rule. He cannot grip a shield or swing an axe, so he must sharpen his mind to a deadly edge. The betrayed will become the betrayer Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast and the lost, he finds they can do more to help him become the man he needs to be than any court of nobles could. Will the usurped become the usurper? But even with loyal friends at his side, Yarvi’s path may end as it began – in twists, and traps and tragedy.

Things start to look up for Ami as she develops a romantic relationship with a new boy in class, Andy, and she renews her friendship with Krissa. Meanwhile, the war in Yugoslavia deepens. Touching and Thought Provoking By Prairie House Jodie Toohey does an excellent job of juxtaposing the life of a young girl in a war-torn country and that of a young American girl--not in physical danger but seeing her own family torn apart by divorce and death. I bought this for my granddaughter but am glad I read it first. Highly recommend it for anyone but especially young teens.

In this highly thrilling mystery, Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr Watson embark on a mission to find a stolen photograph in order to save the King of Bohemia. A year prior to this, Holmes and Watson had been on a similar adventure, trying to retain this same photograph from the grasp of the clever Mrs Norton (then Miss Adler). However, with that mystery resolved to the satisfaction of the King, the original photo has now been stolen from Mrs Norton by Karl, his illegitimate brother, and his cousin, Gottfried who would inherit the throne should anything happen to the current King. The photograph shows evidence of a scandal that will threaten the idea of a peace treaty to be signed by Scandinavian royalty. Unless the Bohemian King abdicates from the throne, the photos and letters will be shown publicly, the Scandinavian king would not then sign the treaty and as a result there would be a terrible civil war. Mrs Norton, the subject of the picture, leads the of men on a chase that is seemingly simple, but as soon as Holmes and Watson arrive in Bohemia, there are complications and a thread of lies that make it a harder for Holmes and Watson to get to the bottom of the problem. It is a journey that both Holmes and Watson find to be full of twists and turns right until the very end. The question is, can the two men solve the crime in time before all enemies of the King rise to power? ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Adler Papers’ is a thrilling mystery from bestselling author John Hall. Praise for John Hall: 'A treat for any Holmes fan.' - Tom Kasey, best-selling author of 'Trade Off'. 17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing... By Rory Coker Holmesians are well aware that the ending of "A Scandal in Bohemia" is highly unsatisfactory for both Holmes and the King of Bohemia, whom Irene Adler, his former lover, is in an excellent position to blackmail. In his latest Holmes pastiche, John Hall takes this situation up again about a year after the events of "Scandal." Irene Norton says she needs to consult Holmes, but vanishes on the way to 221B Baker Street. Apparently kidnapped and left to die, Norton is rescued by Holmes and Watson... but her account of the new situation that threatens the King and herself is highly unsatisfactory and probably pretty close to an outright lie. Instead of refusing to take the case, as Conan Doyle's consulting detective always did when faced with a client who refused to explain the real situation, Holmes and Watson wind up in Bohemia in what is pretty certain to be a wild-goose chase, and both Holmes and Watson bumble in some pretty inexplicable ways, with Watson coming perilously close to being a comical sidekick more than once. The quest to recover the famous letters and photo supposedly stolen from Irene Norton succeeds with ridiculous ease, considering the planless, gormless, painfully unintelligent approaches adopted by Holmes. And then the fact that Mrs. Norton lied suddenly assumes deadly importance. With the situation treated rather lightly by the author throughout, it was a jarring and unwelcome twist for this elderly and jaded reader when the adventure ended with the very abrupt deaths of five characters (two offstage), over only two pages, with one of the deceased certainly an innocent bystander! Not one of Hall's better efforts, this goes on the bottom of the stack with TRAVELS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. It gets three stars only because of the fine period writing style in which the improbable adventure is recounted.

This book was pretty cool. I remember watching the show during summer when I didn't have school and reading this book brought back a lot of those memories. There is weird things in the book from all over the world and I like hearing about other countries weird stuff. This book was sooooo cool that I even got my 8 year old and boyfriend to look at it with me. The cover of the book is pretty cool too it has 3D eyes on it that open and close. All weird facts in the book are confirmed as true and real. I cant believe some of the weird stuff out there. Its defiantly a page turner.

Inside a secret compartment of the just arrived jewelry box is a cache of incredibly expensive jewelry. Lila’s mind reels. How could her mother afford such opulence? Did it really belong to her? Was it stolen? Should she tell her fiancé or the police? Who really were her family?

Journey of the Jewelry allows the reader to follow the path of the jewelry from its origin to its final arrival at Lila’s kitchen table. Lila’s life will never be the same.

Author J. F. Brindley weaves an epic story of four seemingly unrelated objects of value—from exotic places like India, Amsterdam, South America, and China—brought together through romance, murder, theft, kidnapping, war, death, love, and loss. An engaging tale in the vein of Iris Johansen and Catherine Coulter, Journey of the Jewelry shows the unexpected twists and turns that life can sometimes bring—while bringing one family’s history to life.

If you do, have you ever wondered why someone thought it was special enough to pass it along to you. What is the story behind it? What has been the journey it has taken to be in you possession? That is what Journey of the Jewelry is about. It is the story about the very different journeys four pieces of jewelry have taken and the people involved in those journeys to now be in the possion of one lady. It just may make you go pick up something you have inherited and look at it in a different way and appreciate anew why someone wanted to hand it down to you.

Long The experience of reading “The Cold Forever” is like scanning a beautiful, elaborate tapestry from very close up. You can see individual threads and strands, but you never seem to get far enough back to see the way they all fit together. You keep getting lost, but then you get a clue that sets you on the track again. For a moment. It is this quest for meaning that provides the through-line of the reader’s interest and involvement in the story. We are sure, quite often, that we are going to figure this out in the end. I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to reassure you that, for the most part, you will. (I somehow missed where King Geist came from, but it’s probably in there somewhere.)“The Cold Forever” is a Time Travel, hard Sci-Fi novel with a Dystopian element thrown in. The plotline is detailed, incredibly complex, yet well thought out. Put briefly (if such is possible) it is the story of an alien test pilot whose experimental interstellar ship maroons him on earth when it self-destructs, causing “time fluxes” which appear randomly and destroy whatever they touch. The story takes place in several different time lines: one is the dystopian earth created by the time fluxes. The other is in a far future world of frost and super-technology. The others are…well, it gets pretty complicated. The main attraction in the story comes through our empathy towards two characters who stay consistent throughout, to whom we cling in desperation when everything seems out of control. Other characters – all very human and individual – have their own subplots, which are intricately intertwined to create the fabric of the story.I have only two complaints about this book. The first one is that it’s just too complicated. There are too many characters and permutations of characters and too many timelines to keep them all straight. There are most definitely too many points of view, which seem to float around uncontrolled. When I reached the point near the end of the book where the timelines and characters all flowed together into a single story I felt palpable relief.A minor benefit of this is that we are kept so off-balance that no reader is ever going to pick holes in the plotline or the time-travel paradoxes, because nobody can understand it well enough. The second problem is the style of the fight scenes, which borrow far too much from the Transformer and Iron Man movies. Adolescent boys who play video games may enjoy the conceit that fully armoured beings with futuristic weapons would fight with their fists like cowboys in a Western, demolishing scenery in all directions. But that palls rather quickly. The art of writing a fight scene is in maintaining the emotional involvement of the reader. No amount of bashing and smashing can make up for that. However, the bashing and smashing is very impressive, I must admit.Taken as a whole, this novel is an impressive feat of literary organization. Recommended for fans of: time travel, hard sci-fi, Transformers movies.I was given a free electronic copy of the book in order to write this review.

I got stuck somewhere in the middle of the story and I did love a lot of things in the book By Galit Balli Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.ReviewPlot/Story:I was really looking forward reading this book and still no matter how much I tried I just couldn’t finish reading it (sorry) and I have tried a few times. I got stuck somewhere in the middle of the story and I did love a lot of things in the book. It’s clear that the author thought well of the characters and the plot, but I couldn’t connect. The plot is well detailed and the time travel was explained really good (the author did a wonderful job here).Characters:The characters were well thought off, but something was missing for me as I think this is where my connection to the overall story fell short.Writing:There were some grammar issues here and there, but this had no importance in my eyes and the overall writing style of the author was really good.Cover Art:For Science Fiction book, the cover is just not pretty nor it says anything about the books itself. (I would say that I did go to the author’s Goodreads and saw the new cover and it is just wonderful).Other StuffOpening Line: “Sofya stood on a small, snowy hill, her eyes glued to the stars above.”Final Thoughts: This was the weirdest thing that happen to me while reading a book. I loved a lot of things here, but somehow I just didn’t connect to the story. I really don’t know why and I still think that if you are a Science Fiction reader, you might enjoy this book. For me, I know I will go back to this book and try to read it again in another time.Read the original review at: thereadingbud.com

It took me a while because of its complexity but I thought was well put together. A bit hard to follow because you go from the Present to 2053 then to the Age of Frost. But through all three time periods there were time fluxes. I was happy to note that Dmitry tied everything together at the end and then I knew who everyone was.The story is about an alien test pilot who somehow ends up on Earth and somehow causes the time fluxes. He know he has to fix the problem and travels through three different time periods and encounters people that will help him achieve it.The writing contains vivid imagery and makes you feel you're with the characters. The characters themselves feel very real.I gave this book a 4 based on that it was a bit hard to follow with the three time periods and multiple characters (even though at the end, the author brings them all to the major four characters). This is one book that I would recommend to everyone that love sci-fi stories and I myself will read it again.I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

Christmas or confusion, Bethlehem or bedlam . . . Which will you choose this year? The truth is, we don’t have to choose, because Christmas always happens right in the midst of our chaos. God breaks into our noisy disorder and is made known in Jesus Christ. Christmas and confusion—weren’t they intimately related at the first Christmas when Jesus was born? Sometimes we forget that. That’s what this study is about—how Christ breaks into our chaos and confusion and brings Christmas—how Bethlehem always happens in the midst of bedlam.

This participants book for adults includes a session for each Sunday in Advent, along with one for Christmas Sunday. Each session includes questions for reflection and discussion, a brief prayer, a focus for the week, and six daily Bible readings for personal devotional time during the week.

This resources is part of an all-ages Advent Study, which includes these components: Adult Large Print Participant Book, DVD, Leader Guide, Youth Study, and a Children's Reproducible Leader's Guide.

Hits all the right notes, but not a full concert By jdb I've been collecting Advent devotionals for several years now, having only started participating in the Liturgical Calendar about ten years ago. I mention my collection only for the reason of making a point to say, I have a history with devotional writing, and specifically, Advent devotionals. While this particular effort hits all the right notes (the Messianic prophecies, the allusions and symbolism, and the contemporary relevance), it was a bit pedantic and a bit too predictable once past the first few days into the devotional exercises. For the person who is deep into the Liturgical Calendar, this is likely going to be a sleeper, but I do think this is a good option for the person who is new to practicing devotion through the Season of Advent - Christmas. As I mentioned, it hits all the right notes, but can be a little pedantic and tiring in it's guidance for the person who is used to working devotionally through the Advent calendar. The book promotes a DVD and leader guide, which could be used to facilitate a group study, but I have no experience with either. I think, if I were to use a group study for Advent, it would be something a bit more challenging and traditionally faithful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Holiday study By wogan This book is set up in parts. Four are for each Advent Sunday and one is for Christmas. You can purchase a DVD and a study guide to go along with them and use it in study groups. One could also use it alone for their own personal reading. The book aims to show you how to keep Christmas alive. It focuses on the bedlam surrounding the holidays. There is no real attention on the problem that many have with sadness during the holidays – with the loss of loved ones or loneliness. That really could have been addressed, since it is a difficulty many face in the middle of all the holiday bedlam. There are scripture readings, devotions, prayers and space to write thoughts and notes. The scripture focus is not deeply intellectual, nor does it delve into disturbing contemporary issues. This is a light comforting Biblical study.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bedlam, no just light By Dr. Jones This was not as intellectually rigorous as I was expecting. This was not a very deep treatment of how the Christmas spirit can guide us during the rest of the year, or offer advice for not letting the holiday season overwhelm us. It was simply some common sense suggestions that were dressed up in a religious way. I was thoroughly disappointed with a book that seemed to opportunistically brand itself as a christian guide for managing a hectic holiday season.
