By Lisa Lasky This book brought back a lot of memories of when my husband and I moved into our first home together. We had an elderly couple who lived next door and they truly took us under their wings and taught us so much about life and the meaning of living life to the fullest. We miss them terribly and this book brought out a lot of emotion in me when I recalled those memories. I enjoyed these characters so much and felt like they were my friends and I was also a character listening in on all of their conversations. A super story line that keeps the reader wanting more. Living in the same area as the book setting helped me to cherish some of the things that we have in this area that are taken for granted. Looking forward to more books by Marijo in the future.

By Sharon Kay Intrigue, betrayal, joy, wit, warfare – it’s all here, woven into a strong story.Fair disclaimer: I know the author and spoke with him often while he was writing Viking Daughter. I’d expected that to be a bit of a problem. Would I be able to immerse myself in the story, or would I hear Jay’s voice throughout the book? I needn’t have worried. I was drawn into Havi’s world, learning about her new home and new dangers through her eyes. I felt all of her despair, her fury, her…Well. I don’t want to spoil it for you. You’ll need to read the book, won’t you?

Palmer "Jump In Jay" He does not waste around starting his stories By Amazon Customer Viking Daughter By Jay PalmerI am thinking of Calling Mr. Palmer "Jump In Jay"He does not waste around starting his stories. The Old joke about James Michener: " If you want the story not history turn to page 127 "This does not apply. I empathized with many of the characters and their plights. Jay took us back and encouraged us to look forward. It was interesting and challenging looking with modern eyes and at the same time thinking in the times of the story.Fighting with swords and laws, its a toss up which was more difficult. As always there are twists and conundrums that may have you grumbling, OOH come on come on just......(almost put a spoiler there)A good read I suggest you load the dishwasher first so some house work gets done. Here is to strong Women .Thank you Jay, I am ready for the next one.Johann

By Amazon Customer Personal disclaimer first: I know the author in real life.Jay Palmer, in his usual way, writes an excellent account of life. In this case, in and around a south Sweden castle during the days of the Viking. Woven through the life of a woman from the time of her marriage and all that meant. We follow Havi through her life as mistress of the leading clan of Skone.I wasn't at all sure that I would like this story, written by a man, in the 21st century, but I should have known that Jay would keep me from thinking about the author. Soon enough I was just reading about Havi and her friends and enemies, her politics and learning, her ability to sit as mistress and share in the hard work of castle life.Bravo, Jay

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A mix of information By Lalla Rookh The first part of this book contains a mix of 8 "strange" (as the title suggests) stories. The stories are an eclectic assortment of ghost tales and legend but all of them will most likely seem strange to the Western mind. Individually, the stories seem confusing, perhaps even without point, but take them as a whole and they begin to paint a picture. They lend the reader a strong sense of the Eastern mind. It is really, quite a lovely collection. The second part of this book, contains a collection of three "essays", if you will, on insects. In particular, a sampling of insects which hold some place within Japan's culture or customs - butterflies, mosquitos and ants are covered here. To my mind, this is an unfortunate departure from the first half of the book's legends and tales. The information will likely seem a bit dry as Lafcadio Hearn (LH) hails from a different time and to many modern minds, I would think the words of his essays may seem rambling. Nonetheless, they are interesting in and of themselves for the information within. If I were to truly pick apart the fine particulars of the two subject matters, I could surely list some fine argument here as to why they are brought together as one, but in the end, the contrast is greater than the benefit. I find they cause quite some disharmony when brought together. Two last notes for this e-book version: 1) there may be some off-putting words to the modern mind in this book's introduction, which LH had written in January of 1904, in the earliest hours of the Russo-Japanese War. For example, LH references Japanese soldiers on their war boats as "little men", etc. If you can forgive these words as those from a different time, the meat of this book will be your reward, and 2) for those that appreciate additional information, endnotes are included at the end of each tale.Lafcadio Hearn is well enough known to both Japanese and Westerners alike, and well enough respected by both for his translations of Japanese tales that it would seem almost criminal for a Western student of things Japanese, to completely ignore his works. This book and any of his compilations of Japanese ghost stories and legends are highly recommended.

Stories of ghosts, demons, goblins, and other creatures of the supernatural. Japan has a rich history of Yokai which are creatures of the supernatural. In Shinto tradition everything has Kami or spirit in it, so anything can develop into supernatural beings of good, evil, or just a neutral spirit being. Fascinating reading!

This elegant, concise guide by the founder of the University of Philosophical Research distills a lifetime of spiritual seeking into one beautiful, unforgettable blueprint for inner growth.  "When you grow exhausted with all of today’s spiritual programs, axioms, seminars, and techniques; when you feel fatigued from searching and cannot find a way forward; when it seems that years of seeking have netted so little – throw yourself upon the essential truths in this book…It can be lifesaving." --Mitch Horowitz, from the introductionFor more than a half-century, Obadiah Harris has studied the spiritual path, holding ministerial pulpits in traditions ranging from Pentecostalism to New Thought, and directing programs in continuing education, community-outreach, and distance-learning at major universities. He has worked with the ideas and legacies of spiritual icons ranging from Manly P. Hall, author of the landmark The Secret Teachings of All Ages, to Ernest Holmes, founder of the Science of Mind movement, America's most successful and intellectually rigorous New Thought congregation. When he was growing up in rural Oklahoma, Harris's family provided the first pulpit to internationally known televangelist Oral Roberts. As a scholar and seeker, Harris has traversed and helped shape broad swaths of our modern spiritual landscape. Now, he distills the insights he has found -- all of them potent, powerful, and, above all, useful -- in The Simple Road. The Simple Road is more than a book. This concise statement is a spiritual GPS that guides the earnest seeker past dead-ends and switchbacks to locate the path that most intimately and directly connect us with the Source of all life. The methods and ideas in this book can help rescue you from a crisis and provide a daily source of practice. This brave work addresses head-on topics that are often shunned or ignored in works of "proper" theology, including the question of physical healing by spiritual means -- a topic treated with deepest seriousness -- and with the existence of hostile forces that test us on the spiritual path. The Simple Road is balm for parched souls. Whatever tradition you belong to, or if you belong to no one tradition, The Simple Road helps you locate the thread of universality that runs through all faiths, and leads you to practices, prayers, methods, and parables that lift your daily journey to a higher, better place. This brief, powerful book can bring you literally life-saving solace when facing life's entanglements.

About the Author

Introduction

THE ROAD BEFORE YOU

by Mitch Horowitz

The book you are about to read could save your life. That is not some maudlin claim. I know it as fact—because it helped save mine.

Its author, Obadiah Harris, a university administrator, scholar of religion, and lifelong seeker, says little about himself. He makes hardly a personal reference throughout this book. So, before getting into what you will discover in this work—and defending the claim I make above—I will say something about the man behind it. Understanding the author and his background will illuminate how he reached his conclusions, and what they may hold for you.

Obadiah Harris was born on January 6, 1930, to an ardently Bible-reading family in Wynona, Oklahoma, a small town in the northeastern part of the state. His father was the pastor of a local Pentecostal church and his mother taught him to read using Scripture. They completed the entire Bible before Obadiah’s first day of public school.

The Pentecostal faith was at the foundation of his household. Americans have long misunderstood Pentecostalism, with its emphasis on speaking in tongues and spiritual healing. The denomination is often viewed as belonging to the lower rungs of emotional religious life among the Southern poor; or, worse yet, critics see Pentecostals as a congregation of sheep who are exploited by slick televangelists and tent-revival faith healers.

In actuality, the Pentecostalism that animated Obadiah’s childhood arose from a hunger among American Protestants to move beyond the formality and cold professionalism that had settled over much of mainline Christianity by the early twentieth century. Pentecostalism was not a call to flee the modern age but rather to revive a form of religion that intimately mattered in the life of the individual; a religion in which miracles, struggles against evil, and the peace brought by redemption were palpable forces. This was the faith in which Obadiah grew up: one of wonder, mystery, and commitment. Biblical figures were as real to his childhood as sports heroes and presidents.

When Obadiah was eight, a young Oral Roberts—then a freshly minted, twenty-year-old Pentecostal minister decades away from fame as a televangelist—conducted his first revival service at the elder Harris’s church in Oil Center, Oklahoma. In person, Roberts was humble and gentle—but in the pulpit he burned with the conviction that religious healings and the ecstasies of the Holy Spirit had to be part of Christian faith if it was to remain relevant to modern people. Roberts’s passions outstripped his experience: when he ran short of sermons, Obadiah’s father gave him outlines for new ones.

As a teen, Obadiah followed his father on a circuit trail of churches, singing and accompanying himself on guitar. He became ordained as a Pentecostal minister, but yearned for greater freedom and opportunities. In particular, he wanted to broaden his religious perspective. The Judeo-Christian Bible was not, to his mind, the sole repository of religious truth. The notion that other, non-Christian faiths possessed Divine truth was intolerable within most Pentecostal circles—and the young minister was determined to move beyond them.

He began studying some of the new metaphysics that had gained popularity in America in the first half of the twentieth century, particularly the idea that the mind can serve as a channel of Divine creativity, and that thoughts possess causative properties. This outlook, generally called New Thought, went under the congregational banner of movements such as Science of Mind, Divine Science, and Unity. The philosophy’s most articulate purveyors included Ernest Holmes, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, and Neville Goddard—all of whom held, in their own way and with their own distinct emphases, that mental experience and spiritual experience were part of the same continuum, and that our feeling states and thoughts, and our capacity to direct these expressions along productive, generative lines, could manifest reality.

One day in early 1958, Obadiah was delivering a talk as a guest speaker at the Apostolic Christian Temple, a liberal evangelical congregation in Phoenix, Arizona. A slight bustle arose at the rear of the congregation when in walked a group of well-dressed, urbane-looking visitors. At the center of the group was a cheery-eyed, roundish man around whom the others gravitated—he was clearly their leader. Obadiah continued with his sermon, which dealt with the inner meaning of Christ’s parables. The minister said that the parables were not intended as moral doctrine but as portraits of human archetypes, exposing our foibles and possibilities. At the end of the sermon the man at the center of the visitors walked up to Obadiah with a handshake and told him: “I enjoyed your talk. It was pure Science of Mind.” This was Ernest Holmes, a figure Obadiah only dimly recognized from his studies, but who had assembled the most intellectually vibrant of the nation’s New Thought congregations.

Holmes invited Obadiah to come to his Los Angeles seminary to study with him. “Don’t try,” Holmes said in a gentle but pressing manner, “just do it.” Obadiah did go—and forged a close student-teacher bond with the metaphysical philosopher. By the late 1950s, Holmes had weathered bruising factional fights within his church and, with his health unsteady, he was searching for successors. He apparently found one in Obadiah, who was soon appointed senior minister at the First Church of Religious Science in Phoenix, one of the largest Science of Mind congregations at the time. He also spoke at Science of Mind churches up and down the West Coast.

In the late winter of 1960 Holmes was in markedly deteriorated health. Before his death on April seventh, the leader asked Obadiah to take over leadership of the Science of Mind movement. Obadiah declined. He had watched the movement and its factional politics consume too much of his mentor’s life and energies. He knew that he once more had to leave a religious movement that he loved. “I have to find my own way,” Obadiah told his teacher, kneeling by his sickbed. Holmes smiled and replied: “I wish I could go with you.”

Obadiah did find his own way. He served until 1964 at the Phoenix church before pursuing a career in higher education. In 1973 he earned his doctor of philosophy in education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. That year he became an associate professor of educational management and director of community education at New Mexico State University. Two years later he filled the same position at Arizona State University, where he remained for almost two decades, designing programs in community outreach, and in adult and continuing education. Obadiah’s experience in diverse pulpits had given him the ability to communicate with wage-earning people who wanted to return to school; with retail, manufacturing, and railroad magnates who could fund new university programs; and with community members whom he wanted to bring into campus life for more than homecoming parades and football games.

In the early 1990s Obadiah’s life path once again intertwined with an icon of American metaphysics, as it previously had with Ernest Holmes. This time it was with the legacy of a man who had died in 1990 and whom Obadiah had never personally met but knew by reputation: the esoteric scholar Manly P. Hall.

Although invisible to the mainstream, Hall had become the informal dean of the nation’s alternative spiritual culture when at age twenty-seven in 1928 he independently published a massive codex to the mythical, symbolic, and occultic religious traditions of antiquity, The Secret Teachings of All Ages. The comprehensive encyclopedia arcana brought Hall sufficient resources from contributors to construct a “mystery school” in the Griffith Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, which he called the Philosophical Research Society. Hall’s Egyptian-Mayan-Art Deco–styled campus grew to feature a world-class library of spiritual texts; a vault with ancient manuscripts and artifacts; a small complex of classrooms; book-production and warehousing facilities; and an auditorium. For seekers of esoteric wisdom, it was the closest thing to Valhalla.

Return to Marienstadt, the Pennsylvania Dutch town in the Allegheny Highlands, where stories new and old abound. Volume 1 of this series features four stories: I – Treeing: It's Christmas and antique dealer Jim Loeffler has a mission—to find a Tom & Jerry set for Ruthie Weis's treeing party but the search becomes more difficult than he thought until he meets a fellow antique dealer with a sparkle in her eyes. II - The Kissing Tree: Chief of Police Henry Werner is in love. The problem is, considering his romantically adventurous past, no one takes him seriously. III - The Memory Quilt of Lacey Mulhearn: A new business woman in Marienstadt brings Gretchen an antique quilt found in the attic of the house she is turning into a B&B. With the help of Miss Martha they uncover a story from the past when one of the town's first Irish immigrants decided to take a wife. IV - Continental Divides: As woodsman Oliver Eberstark contemplates a big change in his life he takes a walk in Opelt's Wood. Remembering lessons his grandfather taught him, a realization about his life surprises him. Volumes 2 and 3 are coming in June and July of 2015

All of her characters are believable and down to earth. Her writing is accurate and meticulous. I love the fact that every story contains humor and yet so heart warming. I highly recommend this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. THE WAY IT WAS BACK THEN By Penny THE BUCKTAIL CAP IN THE TRUNK is a three-volume anthology of short stories that expand Kathleen Valentine’s colorful literary tapestry of life in the small Pennsylvania Dutch community of Marienstadt. My favorite of the four tales is THE MEMORY QUILT OF LACEY MULHEARN which, in melting pot America, could be the history of anyone’s immigrant family, from whatever nation. Although I am not of Irish descent, the circumstances of the characters felt very similar to what I know of my own family’s history. Paddy Mulhearn came to the New World with a hat full of dreams and found his place in the booming little town of Marienstadt. What was missing was a bride to share in Paddy’s good fortune. Within a few years of the end of the Civil War, by dint of shrewdness and hard work, Paddy had risen to the status of a prominent businessman, but still, the established families of German descent wanted no part of an Irish son-in-law. Lonely amidst his accomplishments, Paddy sent money to his “Mam” in Ireland and looked forward to news of home. One day a letter arrived from his mother. “A terrible disgrace has befallen the McGinnis family, she said, such a dreadful, dreadful thing. I am almost ashamed to tell you this. Their daughter Lacey was always such a sweet, pretty girl—and a good Catholic we thought and now she’s gone and gotten herself in the family way—and she just fifteen.”Paddy read the words then read them again. Drawing paper and pen from his desk drawer he wrote as quickly as his hand would let him. “Send Lacey to me”, he wrote. “I’ll take care of her”. He folded enough money into the envelope to cover passage, sealed the envelope, and putting on his hat, he walked to the post office to mail it right away. And so Lacey, all alone, hardly more than a child herself, and carrying an infant in her womb, crossed the great Atlantic to a new and unknown world. Thus began a marriage born of desperation and isolation that blossomed into a truly American love story. Years later, an old quilt discovered hidden away in the attic of the house Paddy built for his young bride, tells a tale not even Paddy knew. — A tale of tenderness and pride that just might bring a happy tear to the reader's eye.The first two stories in this volume, TREEING and THE KISSING TREE are charming and funny love stories based in local tradition. The fourth story, CONTINENTAL DIVIDES, is more of a meditation on how a special place effects our lives. All are written in the same perceptively nostalgic style that transports the reader back to another place and time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More of my favorite characters! By L J Weber Ms. Valentine's talent for making her characters come alive is never more evident than in her Marienstadt stories. This continuing saga is set in small town Pennsylvania where people bring out the best in each other. You'll come to love all the regulars in no time at all. I'm so glad we're seeing more of these folks that feel like friends. The stories are fun to read and so well developed. Fun and thought provoking at the same time. You'll be happy you decided to visit.

Prepare to be fae-struck...

You know those cute faery tales told to you when you were young? Well, they aren’t real. There’s nothing cute or quaint or charming about faeries. They are sinister, malevolent and unkind. I should know. My mother is one. And she abandoned me at the age of ten to be raised by my human father. I love my father fiercely but it’s hard taking care of him, because he’s frail and slowly losing his mind. That’s the result of being fae-struck, and the reason I’ve never gotten close to any one man. Until sexy as hell werewolf Severin Saint Morgan prowls into my life… Now everything in my life is changing. I can feel something, something dark and dangerous, rippling inside of me, bursting to be free. And I’m afraid I’ll like it too much to stop it. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the lifestyle and spirit of Hollywood in the late 1930's. It is a heartwarming story following Olivia on her journey in fulfilling her dreams to become a Hollywood star and the battles she faces as she has to decide whether or not following her dreams is what she really wants or if following the path God has for her with Nathan, a young man who desires to become a preacher and is fighting his own battles, is what will bring her happiness. I also enjoyed meeting again some of the characters from the first book and catching up on their lives. This is another book from this author that I definitely recommend and I will be looking forward to the third book in the series.

By Dixie Judy Finding Olivia is a well written book about Hollywood in the the Depression era. Olivia is a young girl of eighteen whose lifelong dream was to be a Hollywood star. She leaves her home and family (in fact sneaks away without telling anyone) and really does make it big and becomes a star. She finds out that a lot of compromising of her faith is what Hollywood demands of her. Is this really what she wants? She meets a young preacher and falls in love, but he is afraid of what being a star will cost Olivia, He knows what it did to his young sister and fears that this will happen to Olivia. Can faith in God and each other overcome all the obstacles in their paths? A great read to keep you turning the pages. This book was given to me as a gift to read and review.

Leaves You Wanting More By Lelia Reynolds Darleen is a new author to me and I love the purity of her writing while dealing with real life issues during the depression era. This is the 2nd book in a trilogy and I look forward to the release of book three. The characters are easy to fall in love with and identify with their thoughts and feelings. You meet Olivia in book one as Ruth's best friend and it is nice to follow up with the struggles she faces in life and with her faith. We are introduced to Nathan, who faces the struggles of his sister, and how her choices affect his relationship with Olivia. I love these characters and the way Darlene grasps you from the first chapter. I recommend these books.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book! By WJT This was a truly superb book in my opinion. It had everything you could want from a post-apocalyptic novel, and then some! But Anthony brought realness to the table in this fiction. There are elements of the supernatural, but it was the interactions and actions of humans that made this tale truly riveting and an epic page turner. We have Nathan, the protagonist, alive in a world that is bordering on extinction during the apocalypse. On his journey he keeps diaries as a form of keeping track of progress. Therein lies out entertainment. These entries are written very realistically. It's as though a member of your family, or a friend could have written this diary. It details his trek in search of fellow survivors. But on this voyage he discovers conspiracies, hidden agendas, and how the true nature of people comes out when civilization breaks down. The true evils in this book are not the otherworldly phenomenon, they are what humans will do in order to survive. Some remain sane, morals and decency intact. Whereas others become minions of Satan as they pillage, loot, scavenge, steel and kill without a seconds hesitation. We experience first-hand the action, horror, fear, and heartbreak that Nathan endures. Not to mention that of the kind people he meets on the way. As he travels onwards to his former home, he is fortunate enough to meet kind, selfless and caring individuals who guide and advise him in the right direction. Each character has motivations and reasons for carrying on in the chaos, some searching for loved ones, and some just trying to stay alive against the many threats this apocalypse has brought. It really is glued-to-the-page fiction that you'll find hard to put down.Think you have read it all when it comes to apocalyptic fiction? Think again! This compelling tale delves much deeper and goes much further. If it wasn't for the vivid descriptions of the turmoil, you would forget about the apocalypse. The bold movements and actions of characters are primarily what you'll focus on.Excellent characterisations also adds to the 'page-turner' factor. We don't want a bunch of unbelievable, unrealistic characters parading around at the end of the world. We want to imagine these people as real individuals struck down in utter chaos. And that is exactly what Anthony helps us picture. We form bonds with some people, and grow to hate others. We as the readers feel strong emotions towards the many folk detailed in this superb publication. Also, you get a real 'end of the world' feel. Mr Wilkinson takes time to explain things, taking us on the scenic route as he strolls through towns, cities and fields that have all bowed down to the corruption. Vivid descriptions bring the story to life. Sensations, emotions and scenery practically leap from the pages. But this doesn't mean the pace can't keep up. Because the flow and pace are handled with expert precision. The balance between people, places, actions and plot twists is excellent.Something I found quite endearing within this fiction, was how strangers can become great friends. In the devastation of an apocalypse total strangers become trusted companions on an incredible journey.Such a time also tests determination and humanity, how will such an event effect morality? But the ending to such a tale is crucial. How do you end an apocalypse story? Because the tale can be sensational, but if the ending fails, the book also fails. It is the last impression, the conclusion must be original and executed flawlessly. And I feel, it is. We are left with that sentimental, nostalgic feeling. The end to this journey, but the start to their new lives.

By GreytMom Mr. Wilkinson is a fine storyteller, and the premise is intriguing and well researched. However, what started as a suitably bleak post-apocalyptic scenario with believable, well-drawn characters is interrupted by the inexplicable appearance of murderous aliens intent on capturing all female survivors. The book is rife with glaring grammar, spelling, and syntax errors. Unfortunately, these easily correctable flaws drag a fine end-of-the-world yarn down into the realm of mediocre fan fiction. It's a good start -- a rough draft that could be an excellent novel should the author choose to employ the services of a good copy editor. And send the aliens back to the story they came from. They really don't belong in this one.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Very Powerful Story By Sandra B I really enjoyed this book, especially written in a diary form. Normally misspelled words, when a sentence should end and putting words down in the wrong form..that usually bothers me but I overlooked it due to the intensity of this story. I do feel the author could have done without throwing in aliens here and there. The story was strong without them in it and it made no sense to me. The AFTERMATH of the nuclear bombs was so extreme and the author left no area where it wasn't affected. I found that the large amount of scumbags willing to follow this Mr. T who takes every female young or old, was a bit much. Or the fact, not one person or military unit can't take this guy out of commission. I don't know why women and female children have to always be severely violated in any of these end of the world books. What does this say? That as long as the threat of law is forefront, women and children are fairly safe from man?? Just an observation after reading over 260 books in this genre.

Excellent book on Streaming analytics with Spark By Sumit Pal Excellent book - very well written, well organized - not too verbose up to the point and lot of material covered as well. The book contains exactly what one needs to get up and running with Spark - it is an intermediate level book. Programs are well written and have detailed comments on why the code is written in the way it is written. Both Scala and Java code have been covered.Good coverage of SQL in Streaming, especially chapter 6 also discusses a novel way to use SQL to query GraphX.I would definitely recommend this book.

Spark Streaming captured clearly, adequately By Samar Spark Streaming has many moving parts and initially proved to be a somewhat tough area of spark programming to sort out. The spark site has the introductory, elementary examples that whet your appetite and excite one's imagination about the interesting possibilities. However how to set up the various sources , analyze the data in real time , and direct the output to system output and or persistent storage initiaally had me struggling and lost many a times. This work turned out to be a great helping hand enabling me to rapidly comprehend the exciting technology. One has to have some familiarity with basics of spark to be able to understand relatively advanced, specialized streams such as grpxh, spark-streaming, machine learning. In any book on the specialized aspects, a critical bit is the balance between detailing the foundations necessary to understand the subject and the subject itself. The minimum neccessary basics are captured – should be an easy decision for a reader to breezily peruse or skip them all together. Many combinations beggining from a basic word counting example streaming data from a terminal window to various input sources such as flume, cassandra and finer grained, more specialized analysis such as graphx, spark sql are presented clearly. The supporting data and source code simplify one's life setting the examples up and udnerstand by running, coding the examples oneself. Setting up , packaging and runnng spark jobs, deploying them in varied setup scenarios – standalone, on a yarn , mesos cluster are adequately captured. On the whole, a work that competently acquaints you with enough facets of the subject to make you feell knowledgable of the subject and at ease with it.It would be amiss to not mention the audhor's helffullness in resolving problems readily. Stuck in one example on account of libraries carelessly copied into the spark library directory – aftet having tried myriad combinations – found the author's email address in the README in the source code– referred the problem and was pleased to receive prompt responses and have the problem resolved over few email exchanges.A useful book that helped me to quickly grasp Spark Streaming adequately

It begins with Spark installation and configuration and setting up your IDE (Eclipse) and goes all the way to packaging your Streaming application and deploying (standalone / Yarn / Mesos) and monitoring your application. It uses a Distributed Log Processing example to demonstrate various functionalities as one proceeds through the book. For external input and output, the book provides examples for Flume and Cassandra respectively. It also provides an example of integrating Streaming with GraphX. Examples are provided in both Java and Scala. The book also has quite a bit of theory about Spark to explain the reasoning behind Streaming configuration choices, as well as background to DStreams and windowing.Overall the book should be a useful guide to anyone building Spark Streaming applications, either in Java or Scala. If you are already familiar with Spark, some of the material may be redundant, but the book is aimed at people who are new to Spark and who want to get into Spark Streaming.DISCLAIMER: I was one of the reviewers of this book (during publishing). However, I have tried to provide an unbiased review. Hopefully readers of the review will feel the same way.

Two very different families are bonded by scandal in this sweeping story of love, greed, and betrayal Anselme Rochefort has built an empire manufacturing serge de Nîmes, or denim. His biggest client? Levi Strauss. As the craze for blue jeans begins to sweep the globe, Rochefort Industries seems poised for untold success. But Anselme can be as cruel and ruthless with his family as he is in business. The Rocheforts’ neighbor Donatien Rouvière has one of the region’s most prosperous farms and is desperate for a son to carry on his legacy. After the births of three daughters, the Rouvières adopt an orphan from the Sisters of Charity convent and raise him as their own. When Anselme suggests uniting the two families by arranging for their children to marry, it seems like the perfect match. But as the lives of the two clans grow increasingly intertwined, dark secrets come to light, including the mysterious circumstances of the death of Anselme’s eldest daughter. With The Rocheforts, Christian Laborie weaves a captivating tale of deceit, intrigue, and the dynamic tension between industrialization and a way of life rooted in the land.

Those long, involved novels which follow a family from generation to generation? The ones where the sins of the father were visited on the sons, and their sons, etc? The late author Taylor Caldwell used to churn them out and all were entertaining in their overwrought way. (Side bar: I wish Caldwell's publishers would publish her "Dynasty of Death" trilogy in ebook...).Anyway, French author Christian Laborie's novel, "The Rocheforts", is being published in English. It was a best-seller in France in 2010. The book, a longish saga of the Rochefort family of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in southern France, begins when a man is spotted entering a darkened house in 1898 and seen leaving with a bundle of...something. The reader doesn't know what the bundle is but the author gives clues. And we do find out later on. The story then moves on in time to the merging of two family fortunes - fortunes of unequal size, however - with the marriage of Louise Rouviere and Jean-Christophe Rochefort. Louise is from a prosperous farm family, which, unfortunately for the father, Donatien, consists only of daughters. He and his wife decide to adopt a child from an orphanage in Nimes and groom him to take over the family farm. The rest of the book is the story of the Rochefort and the Rouviere families and how the two interact, interlove, and intermarry. The villain of the book - and there really only is one - is the patriarch of the Rocheforts, Anselme, who time and time again manages to alienate everyone around him. (I say only one, though there's another bad guy, but he's sort of an "Anseleme mini-me") From Anselme the lies and coverups do go generation to generation...The attentive reader of fiction almost always learns something from the pages of a well-written novel. In "The Rocheforts", we learn about denim. The material, denim. The name "denim" was taken from the area in France in which it was developed, "Nimes". ("de Nimes" or "denim"). The Rochefort money has come from both dowries and the production of fabric.Christian Laborie also does an excellent job at writing about France in the pre-WW1 years til the 1930's in his family saga. This is one of the first novels I've read that covers those years, in political, economic, and societal terms. The only problem with the book that some readers may find is the somewhat flatness of the writing. I'm trying to figure out if its because of the translation from French to English. I don't know who did the translation; no name is given. It could be that Christian Laborie did his own translation. Now, I liked it because I don't like florid writing. But others may not be able to get "involved" with the family. This is one of those book I can heartily recommend to readers looking for a robust family saga. But do read all the reviews that will be written about this book - I think mine is the first but many others will follow - and see if any mention the writing style.

A Good Story that Epitomizes Life Among the Rich & Powerful of Europe Between the Two Wars By Bill Anderson Length: 475 pages. This is a good adventure with intrigue. Set in France at a time when Europe was at the peak of power, culture and refinement. If this story was written during the 1970s in the United States, it would be about Jock Ewing. If it were written about Silicon Valley, it would be about Steve Jobs trying to get an adopted son married to the granddaughter of Walt Disney.Yet, in many ways, it is a greater escape by being seton France a hundred years ago, so the reader can more easily suspend disbelief.I got this through the Amazon Vine program, thinking it might be as intriguing and tragic similar to another novel based on characters not unlike Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch. (I apologize for not recollecting the name of the book, but I couldn't even google for it successfully.)The Rocheforts is a well-written book, but not quite a five star. It tugged me from time to time, but, alas, I found myself reading a few pages, then picking up something else. Then, I'd find myself coming right back to The Rocheforts. But, I just don't get invested into the characters.A 4-1/2 Star Novel.

Perhaps they've gone out of vogue, but I kind of miss them. The Rocheforts is one of those huge, sweeping sagas like the kind that used to be really popular back in the 80s. It follows two French families (the novel is translated from the French...it was a huge bestseller over in France a few years back. Maybe we have to move to France to get these kind of novels back?), the wealthy and privileged Rocheforts and the more down to earth farming family, the Rouvieres. Needless to say, the families become intertwined via marriage, children, relationships, scandal, hatreds, all that good stuff that makes a family saga novel so danged gossipy and good. It starts towards the end of the 1800s and finishes off a hundred or so years later so we've got some good generational stuff going on here too.If you miss the whole saga type books, order this. It's just good fun.
