Packed with drama, humor, the lore of American Indians and Tibetan Buddhists, plus unforgettable characters, this book is a dazzling tour de force and a deeply moving story. An unlikely trio comprised of the Shoshone Indian Asie, a Tibetan nun, and Sir Richard Burton—the famous soldier and explorer—flees from the Utah Territory to California in 1862. The Destroying Angel of the Mormon Church, Porter Rockwell, pursues them relentlessly. The journey is packed with colorful characters, including a fledgling journalist named Mark Twain. In the end Asie discovers why he was named the Rock Child, what it means to be a man of color in America, what spiritual path will nurture him, who his people are, and the strength of love. Reviews “Blevins has stated his aim is to write ‘mythic novels of the American West.’ He meets that goal in The Rock Child. The voices shift between an Indian-Anglo musical savant; Sun Moon, a virginal Tibetan nun shanghaied into American prostitution; and Sir Richard Burton, real-life explorer, linguist, and Arabian Nights translator. “Joining Burton in rescuing Asie and Sun Moon from a dreadful fate is Mark Twain, a comedic catalyst that surprisingly few historical novelists have thought to exploit. Like Twain, Burton is well drawn. He’s a cultivated, Sean Connery-type sinner who feels badly about his appetites, and the picaresque passages told from his perspective enliven this ambitious narrative.” — Library Journal “A colorful novel set among the Mormons in 1862, featuring such real folks as Sam Clemens, Sir Richard Burton, Brigham Young, and Porter Rockwell, by the author of Stone Song, Win Blevins. “Half-Indian Asie Taylor, a musical prodigy who has been accepted into the Church of the Latter-day Saints, drowns when his delivery wagon is overturned in a flash flood. He experiences an out-of-body experience, returns to life, and is amazed to see the scarred but beautiful face of Sun Moon above him. Sun is a Tibetan Buddhist nun who was kidnapped in Asia and shipped to America to be sold into prostitution. Tarim, the tavernkeeper who bought her, expects to resell her for a hefty sum. “When Porter Rockwell, a Mormon known as the Destroying Angel buys Sun Moon, he attempts to satisfy his lust. Frustrated by his inability to do so, he disfigures her face. Sun Moon flees and falls in with Asie, who has decided to go in search of his origins and the meaning of his Shoshone name, Rock Child. Meanwhile, Rockwell is in pursuit of Sun Moon, determined to kill her—and anyone who gets in his way. “Tibetan-speaking Sir Richard Burton, a brilliant opium addict, is in Salt Lake City to persuade Brigham Young to form a separate Western Confederacy. Burton saves Asie and Sun Moon from Rockwell and joins their quest. For a while, Brigham Young gives them sanctuary from Rockwell, though Rockwell later follows the trio to San Francisco. “The climax would satisfy the Buddha himself as his teachings resoundingly bring the murderous Rockwell to heel. The historical detail serves a charming treasure.” — Kirkus Reviews “‘Life is a flabbergaster,’ says Asie Taylor, hero of Win Blevins’s The Rock Child, a story that will flabbergast every reader who opens it. This is a rich, funny, fascinating, meaningful, and memorable novel from the author of that incredible masterpiece about Crazy Horse, Stone Song.” —Rocky Mountain News “Win Blevins–that master yarn-spinner–has done it again with The Rock Child. A wonderfully wild one which you don’t want to miss.” — Tony Hillerman “Win Blevins displays an antic imagination, not only in mingling actual and invented characters, but in melding gritty action-adventure with metaphysical musings.” — Dale Wasserman, author of Man of La Mancha “Win Blevins’s new book is a risqué and veritable romp through the history of the Old West! Highly enjoyable reading! —Clyde M. Hall, Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Judge

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Rock Child By A Customer This book is a first person account of a perilous journey taken across the wild west. What makes this book unique is the company the teller keeps. A half breed of unknown origins is the teller, and he is in the company of a Tibetan nun whom he has fallen in love with, and a spy for the British--who's secretly practicing a 'heathen' religion! If you like westerns...try this one! It's a western with a twist!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "Flabbergaster" By Munir I found this novel a delightful and interesting read. The inclusion of Buddhist spirituality, an amazingly international array of characters (even a Chinese Muslim (Uighur) tavernkeeper), and emphasis on the Native American experience, make this novel deeper and more meaningful than most other novels set in the American West. Though the plot is intriguing, the novel is at its best in depicting its colorful and diverse characters (Taylor, buoyant half-Indian, with a passion for music, who pairs up with Sun moon, beautiful Tibetan nun)and settings, from a Digger Indian village to Mormon Utah. Despite its realistic depictions of the racism and violence of the period, the story remains light-hearted and humorous. Sir Richard Burton, Nile explorer and drug addict, was particularly enjoyable. It would have been more interesting if his Sufi beliefs were explored a bit further, but of course he was somewhat of a side character.

Awesome and *original* story line, interesting historical facts, and wild adventure. This is the first book I've ever read by Blevins, and now I can't wait to order his other books, pronto. Buda, Ottoman Hungary, 1599: Yasamin, the naïve daughter of an Ottoman bureaucrat, finds herself trapped in an arranged marriage to the son of the powerful governor of Buda. She is unprepared for the gossip and scheming rampant in the palace but realizes she faces more than petty jealousies when someone tries to drown her in the baths on the day before her wedding. An unearthly menace lurks in the palace corridors, and the one person able to protect Yasamin is a soldier named Iskander, who seems to appear whenever she needs him. Charming and confident, he is nothing like her new husband, but trusting either of them could be a deadly mistake. Berlin, Germany, 1999: Adam Mire, an American professor of history, discovers a worn, marked-up copy of Dracula. The clues within its pages send him on a journey across the stark landscape of Eastern Europe, searching for a medallion that once belonged to Dracula himself. But a killer hounds Adam’s footsteps, and each new clue he uncovers brings him closer to a beguiling, raven-haired woman named Yasamin Ashrafi, who might be the first of Dracula’s legendary Brides. Adam has an agenda of his own, however, a quest more personal than anyone knows. One misstep, and his haunted past could lead to death from a blade in his back … or from Yasamin’s fatal embrace.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Be Careful of the Shadows By Candice Carpenter This book is a masterpiece! J. Matthew Saunders is a craftsman, perfectly blending non-ficional and fictional history into a suspenseful, sensual, high intensity tale. The gentle ping pong between 1599 and 1999 are easily understood, followable and important in order to fully grasp the gravity of the current situations. The story was perfectly paced with mystery, seduction, gore, love, loss and triumph in all the right places. Saunders’ historical knowledge is evident and detailed, adding to the story immensely. It was a taste of Dracula I have never had from a perspective I had never considered.***The short chapter layout increased my reading speed which I greatly appreciated.***No matter if it is for the mystery, the history or a new take on an old tale, I highly recommend you purchase/read Daughters of Shadow & Blood-Book I: Yasmin and anxiously await Book 2 with me!

By Calandra Usher I blew through this book in two days, and it's not what I would call an easy read. At first the format annoyed me just slightly because I wanted more detail about one of the characters story, but then it jumps to another perspective and I had to just read a little more to get back to them... Suddenly it's two in the morning and I've been sucked into a world of historical adventure and I can't tell what is truth or fiction. It's a brilliant tactic to keep the story moving and the reader hungry for more. Mr. Saunders has created a beautiful, vibrant, entirely plausible version of history with fantastic characters and a twisting plot that keeps dancing until the last pages. Really looking forward to reading the next one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Woman's Point of View By The Bookend Family Review by: Stacy PalmI have a great fondness for historical fiction as it interests me in general. Add in a book a dash of horror, a bit of the paranormal, and a good percentage of thrilling adventure and you end up with one of the most entertaining and exhilarating books on my recommended reading list. Daughters of Shadow and Blood by J. Matthew Saunders did not disappoint, and in fact kept me riveted to the page until I had finished it.Not giving too much away, this tells the story of Dracula's Bride, Yasamin, and it encapsulated everything I hoped I would find in it's pages. A story about a strong woman in a time when she was not appreciated, and having to overcome obstacles or rather succumbing to obstacles that lead her to her current position. I really enjoyed this story and cannot wait for the next installment. This is the Brides' stories, not Dracula's. So while you may find him within the pages, his story is not the focal point, and I believe that is one of the reasons I fell deeply into this book. There is a strong mystery element to this book. As I've mentioned in other reviews I try very much to read very little about ARC's that are given to me for review. I want the surprise of what I'm reading. So going into this book I was not aware of the Bride element, or many other things about this book. The book itself is structured in a way that I found very conducive to read. Each chapter being very short in length and switching between several time periods. This allows the reader to ponder what the large story is and what scheme is in play, The more I read the more intrigued I became all the way through till the final pages when the pieces snapped into place.I believe the author did a fantastic job of delaying the surprises till the appropriate time, yet supplied the reader with enough of a carrying pace to keep us guessing. Overall I was delighted with this book and will be eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.

From Linkville Press: The perception that the World is spinning out of control is nothing new. England in 1840, at the start of Victoria's reign, saw change on an unprecedented level, with nothing seemingly sacred anymore. This groundbreaking novel shows how, in just a few decades, Britain witnessed the creation, acceptance and normalization of amazing feats of design, wealth, engineering, revolution, music, and new ideas from East End factories to West End Theatres. Cornwall, England's Southern tip was though still isolated, difficult to get to. The Cornish still did things their own way. Smuggling helped whole communities struggle from one year to the next. If London wanted them to buy into the industrial revolution, working longer hours under electric lighting for the good of Queen and country, they were prepared to. However they wanted something in return. They wanted the right to vote. Every man able to partake in a secret ballot and every vote to be counted. That is what they were demanding in return. Meanwhile, pianos were being mass-produced for the first time. Joff Owens didn't want to follow into the family smuggling business, nor did he care about politics. He just wanted to play music. By the 1860's London was the nerve centre of the new musical theatre, opium was legal and widely abused, and eligible voters doubled overnight. It was then the most tolerant capital in Europe, and men came from the USA, Russia, Poland, Italy and the Empire. Capitalists, Anarchists, Socialists, Communists, supporters of Women's Suffrage, they kept on coming, often straight into the mean streets of the East End. Joff Owens played piano for them all. Twenty years later, Victoria had been in power for nearly fifty years when Jack the Ripper prowled Whitechapel. By now the vote had been given to most men over the age of twenty-one. Unions and labour movements were legal, although gangsters still controlled huge swathes of urban society, making fortunes from lucrative gambling and burlesque venues alongside the legal West End theatres producing the very first working class heroes. Stars of the stage rose from rags to riches and were catapulted into the ranks of the powerful, equipped with the right to vote. The world was changing fast and one man played the soundtrack as it did so; Joff played for them all. 150 years later there is still a perception of a world spinning out of control. Although there is a choice, there is hope. There is always hope!

Historically accurate By wally parson I was very impressed with the historical accuracy both in the smuggling Cornish age and also in the various elements in the East End of London in the Victorian age. The story was well written and the content was well worth purchasing such a book. Please could we have more from this author.

By Purple Passion Gritty, brutal account of the struggles of individuals and communities in Victorian England. Starting in 1840 in Cornwall and continuing up to Jack the Ripper's nights stalking Whitechapel, the reader is shown the reality of life for the poor and destitute. The following quote from the book sums it up perfectly: "People weren't living; they were just surviving at best, but only just. They had no time to be loving families any more, to be there as their children developed. They were being weighed down with the seismic task of just making it through to the next day." Although I found this book to be extremely hard to read at times, it did have glimpses of hope for better days to come. Excellent reading for someone looking for the unvarnished history of a country in turmoil.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A definite Must read! By donal byrne A wonderful book, excellently written, full of surprises and brimming with revolution. The reader is taken on a journey from Cornwall at the height of its smuggling age to the seedy underbelly of Jack the Ripper's London, where the clash of emerging political ideologies in the second half of the 19th century spills from the opium dens and music halls out onto the streets to challenge the status quo.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was actually saddened when I came to the end.The scenes and imagery are vividly painted and will stay with me for a long long time. This is a definite "must read".

Starburst magazine raved that Gemsigns, the first novel in a series, is "a fascinating and compelling read, exploring the boundaries of human behavior, religious influences, and the morality of the everyday person. It comes highly recommended." For years the human race was under attack from a deadly Syndrome, but when a cure was found--in the form of genetically engineered human beings, Gems--the line between survival and ethics was radically altered. Now the Gems are fighting for their freedom, from the oppression of the companies that created them, and against the Norms who see them as slaves. And a conference at which Dr Eli Walker has been commissioned to present his findings on the Gems is the key to that freedom. But with the Gemtech companies fighting to keep the Gems enslaved, and the horrifying godgangs determined to rid the earth of these "unholy" creations, the Gems are up against forces that may just be too powerful to oppose.

Review "Gemsigns is a modern-day dystopian masterpiece, and Stephanie Saulter adroitly weaves into her SciFi novel a mixture of politics, philosophy, science, corporate greed, and slavery. It's a book that will make you consider what it means to be called human."―The Guardian Liberty Voice"a fascinating and compelling read, exploring the boundaries of human behavior, religious influences, and the morality of the everyday person. It comes highly recommended."―Starburst magazine"Well-written and thought provoking, Gemsigns is an all-around superb debut from Stephanie Saulter"―Bibliosanctum"It's more of an experience than just a mere story, a new world rather than a mere novel. It's very possibly one of the best things I'm going to read this year. Social sci-fi just doesn't get any better than this!"―Bibliotropic

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. When describing a circle one begins anywhere. Each point precedes and succeeds with no greater or less meaning; the tale they tell remains unvaried. There is neither cause nor consequence, for every moment is both. It is curious the resignation with which we declare this pattern in human affairs, and the virtue with which we credit it in nature. But beware illusions born of too still and centred a perspective. A mere tilt of the head, a sideways step – and history unspools. The triumphs and tragedies, victories and defeats, dark and golden ages come and go and come again, each shaped by the revolution of which it is the final coordinate, shaping that for which it is the first. No two moments are exactly the same, for travelling the circuit conveys a momentum that displaces the point of return from the point of departure. Life proceeds in a spiral, pushing outward and forward, expanding and accelerating as the players whirl through their evolutions, building a vortex.Be careful. Stand in the middle and the maelstrom will pull you in.But you must pick the right moment to join the dance. There are events which ripple down the helix, maiming and moulding all the moments that follow. These are worth understanding.Beginnings are important.* * *So our story begins, perhaps, with Dr Eli Walker, tasked with the mapping of divisions, accosted, accused and propositioned. Insulted, as he would have it, but then Dr Walker is a principled man. To himself he is a player in a morality tale, unravelling dissimulations. He knows, or thinks he knows, what the choices are. His own righteousness is in no doubt. He has the conviction of a man who fights on the side of angels.* * *But Dr Walker is a reactor to a reality, the effect of a cause. We might better begin with Gaela Provis Bel’Natur, struggling with corollaries as she makes her way across the city. They will lead her to a treasure beyond imagining, the discarded relic of a dismayed hegemony. Does our story flow from what she finds, or from the manner of her finding it? She could not tell you. Gaela is the very embodiment of unintended consequences. It is her boon and her doom, her grace and her gall. It exhausts her. Gaela could tell Eli a thing or two about the hard grind of duality. She would give a lot for a middle ground, some quiet grey in which to rest, and she may find it, for a while. But not for long. She has convictions of her own.* * *So Gaela, maybe Gaela is the starting point. Or maybe not. All beginnings are endings, after all, so perhaps we should commence with a departure. A long time ago, in a forest, a deep dark wood as befits a fairytale. A young girl, not much beyond childhood, flees between towering trunks, bearing an impossible burden, running for her life. She has emerged from earth and the great silent spaces beneath the cathedral of trees frighten her. She pauses for breath, rests her hand against rough bark. She has never felt anything like it.A moth flutters away from her fingers, brown-grey and mottled and invisible until it moves, finding a safer vantage higher up. The girl is transfixed. She is reaching up towards it, hoping to see it fly again, when a whisper of sound reaches her, sighing on a breeze through the forest. For a moment she has almost forgotten the pursuit. She wishes she shared the moth’s gift of camouflage, or the possibility of escape in the trees. But even if she were to ascend into the canopy she knows they would find her, track her, burn the forest to retrieve or destroy her. There are men and dogs on her trail, and darker things as well. So she turns, slips away up the slope, running as fast as she can, making for the open ground she knows is there.Knows? She does not know. She has seen a map. They did not think she would understand it and so did not trouble to hide it from her. She understands only too well that it may be old. The place she is making for may have changed. The trees may stop too soon, or not at all. There may be people, and not the ones she hopes to find. She had very little time, and has judged this her best chance. There is nothing to do now except struggle uphill, hearing more distinctly the whir of a helicopter in the distance, feeling the stitch burning fierce in her side, the low branches and brambles catching at her as the trees become smaller, newer, and the forest turns to scrub on the flat land of the plateau. This is unexpected. The trees have been cleared, a hazard she had anticipated; but some time ago, and the new growth has not been managed. So she is not exposed as she had feared, but she is slowed down, reduced to walking pace as she pushes through the dense brush. Her pursuers are still moving at speed, and she can hear the dogs now, and the shouts of the men.Strangely it is the helicopter she fears most, and she scans the sky. Its endless unbordered space should panic her, but instead the blue immensity overhead fills her with a strange, wild joy. She marshals it. There is no time yet to explore this feeling, and if she is captured the time will never come again. No sight of the helicopter, and its sound has become distant: it must be at its apogee as it circles the forest. For a moment she marvels at her luck, and wonders that it is not tracking the movements of her pursuers, as they are tracking her. The others must not all have been rounded up yet, she thinks, and hope surges in her. Again, she damps the emotion down. She is the only one who has any real chance, and that will be dashed in minutes if the helicopter is called in before she reaches her destination.Which it will be the moment they realise where she has led them. She can clearly hear the other sound she had been straining for. It was a distant murmur as she came out of the trees, then a growing grumble as she pushed and strained through the dense growth, and now a rushing, tumbling roar as the bracken releases her and she stumbles out onto a narrow, grassy ledge. She peers over the edge, down into the gorge that falls away a short stride from where she stands, then to the right and up to where the river pours out of the mountain far above her head, crashing into a valley as far again below her feet. White mist and water spray billow up to meet her. The cleft is narrow, a vein of softer rock scoured away over eons. On both sides the walls are nearly vertical, broken here and there by solitary trees that colonise the few ledges and point up at her like spears. As she leans over, the waterfall’s turbulence buffets her, wetting her face as though with tears. No one is there to meet her. A mountain climber with ropes and anchors might hope to abseil down the side of the cliff; she has neither the skill nor the equipment. White water boils at the base of the drop, and she feels panic rising up into her throat. She takes a deep breath, then another and another, and casts a last look up at the deepening blue of the evening sky. Then she fixes her eyes down the long plunge into the gorge.A moment later the tracking team bursts out of the forest and into the sticky embrace of the scrubland. The leader hears the faint thunder of the waterfall, checks her map and swears. She screams into her earset.Within seconds the roar of the helicopter rivals that of the river as it heaves into view. By the time the trackers and dogs force their way through the undergrowth and onto the ledge, it is hovering above the gorge, swaying a bit in the updraughts, staying high to avoid the steep walls and buffeting currents. Its rotors almost span the width of the crevice. Retrieval specialists in orange safety suits hang out of the door, sweeping the gap with binoculars. Even from a distance their body language signals disappointment. The air team leader spots his counterpart standing on the edge of the abyss and pulls himself back inside. She knows what he will say before her comlink crackles with the news. The girl is gone.

The reviews on it are great, but I seem to be one of a couple that can't get into it. I admittedly didn't even finish this book. I tried restarting it twice before I finally gave up after realizing that I wasn't really even reading it anymore, I was just skimming the pages. That's a sign that I'm not EVER going to finish a book, and I took it to heart and decided to revisit this book again- but at a much later date. The plot was extremely slow. While the idea is great, the way it's written makes it hard to keep up, and it takes a lot of mental bookmarking to figure out what some characters are referring to later on. By what I've read, it seems like everything is written as if you just stumbled into the conversation, and somebody explains what they're talking about to you much, MUCH later. The characters are okay at best. I don't want to give too much away for those that might still want to read this, but they all same the most predicable things. And again, you're not really kept in the loop.I'll be giving this book a try later on, but I'm still sad that it didn't work out the first (two times) around. I hope you might enjoy it more than I did.

This book is one of the verry best I have ever read By Bell Weather As I am now a "senior citizen," I have read many, many science fiction/fantasy/urban fantasy books. This book is one of the verry best I have ever read. The premise is striking, and I am amazed at the young author's grasp of human psychology/complexity. This is a deep and meaningful work. I could not wait to order the second book in the series, and it is as good as this first!

Dealing with Issues we might have to face at some point By HFCs I found it very relevant that the author picked up our increasing virtual and wireless connectedness and dependency on IT and gadgets of all sorts as the root cause of a disease that could mean the end of humanity as we know it. Adding in the double sword solution of the initial problem by means of gene manipulation with the ethical consequences for mankind made for an interesting and relevant plot foundation. Definitely. Book that deserves a wide readership especially those who wonder how the combined impact of the running issues of our times, proliferation of IT technology, gene manipulation, never-ending economical crises will play itself out.

The vast blue sky. The endless flow of pristine waters. The days of summer that seem to have no end.

All this belongs to Scotlin Bright as he gallops from one adventure to the next with no thought of tomorrow. Tomorrow is for grown-ups. Today belongs to Scotlin. Every summer since his eighth birthday, he's run the trot-lines on the Stream River, eaten fried fish, and tried to play his Uncle Roz's fiddle. He never tires of the tales his uncle relates of his time in France during the Great War, although Roz says there was nothing great about the war. It's an idyllic life for Scotlin. But his happiness is harshly interrupted when Scotlin learns he must soon leave the river to take his place working his father's farm, and worse, face the sorry prospect of going to high school in the fall. Of course he bows up and demands to stay on the river with Uncle Roz. What boy would trade paradise for work and more endless work, year after year? He vows to stay by the river. Scotlin must learn that life isn't a playground made for his amusement, that fairness isn't part of the growing-up process, and that death is always closer than you think.

Review “Summer Wilson has written a Mark Twain tale about a teenage boy and his uncle that sure enough captures growing up a ways back in time when things were a lot simpler but nothing came easy. He will have you thinking being a boy growing up never was no picnic. You will enjoy his humor and his creative skills with a pen. Get a copy—I enjoyed my read of it.” – Dusty Richards, two-time Spur Award winner, author of the Chet Byrnes Ranch Series and the O’Malley Brothers of Texas

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A remarkable YA novel By M.G. Miller Billy in the Lowground is a rare treat, a young adult novel that doesn’t rely on gimmicks to keep the reader turning pages. Hearkening back to a simpler time, it is the story of Scotlin Bright, poised on the brink of adulthood during a summer of discovery. It is a time of learning for him, of adventure, and even a little romance, all told with attention to detail and a near magical affection. I finished Billy in one pleasurable sitting. Highly recommended for discriminating young--and not so young--adults.

It is about a rich farm boy and a poor farm boy. Very interesting how their lives come together. I think it was a very good book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it is easy to read By barry lawson While reading Billy in the Lowground it reminded me of my own experiences as a teenager; camping out on the river, working in the hay fields, and having the hair stand straight up on the back of my neck after hearing a panther scream. Sumner Wilson has vividly portrayed the happy-go-lucky lifestyle of his main character, thirteen year old Scotlin, as he learns life's important lessons on the way. This is a well written book, it is easy to read, and every scene painted a clear picture of unfolding events. It was a joyful read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading an adventure story with life's lessons woven into them.

Powerful, intelligent, ruthless...Servalan as a child, learning early about power and how to get it...Avon as a young man, finding ways to beat the system...Two sides of a coin, two lives on a collision course...The events on the Liberator are only a part of their story. Now it's time to find out how it started - and how it ends. Lucifer: Genesis is a compelling and vivid reimagining of Avon's life, starting long before the events of the TV series, following his journey from the Liberator to the Scorpio, and leading us into the bleak future of the post-Federation world. Genesis is the third book in Paul Darrow's Lucifer trilogy for Big Finish Productions. Paul Darrow is an actor who is probably best known for his portrayal of Avon in Blake's 7, although he has appeared in many other television programmes and theatre productions and, albeit briefly, one or two films. He is currently the voice of the independent radio station JACK FM. He has written Avon - A Terrible Aspect, the novel of Queen: The Eye and You're Him, Aren't You?, a brief memoir, published by Big Finish. He is an avid reader of novels and fascinated by military history. He lives with a small dachshund in Sussex. Lucifer: Genesis is the third and last book in the Lucifer trilogy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An engaging fantasy By carol author Devin O'Branagan is a prolific and talented writer. I think Genesis is her best novel yet. You don't need to have read the first two books in the trilogy to appreciate this one, but if you read Genesis first, you'll probably want to look for Glory, and Pretty Sacrifices, as well. Because of the interesting characters and exciting action scenes, Genesis would make a great movie.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I’ve been eagerly waiting for this one! By Jenny A. Kalahar Ms. O’Branagan’s unique voice has carried us back to the post-pandemic version of Earth she had left us in, panting and wondering. This intelligent, extremely entertaining third book in the series goes deeper into the worlds of vampires and demons, angels and witches, and humans – both brave and despicable humans. Love that transcends time and tremendous obstacles; hatred and evil that pulses and threatens the entire planet; and loyalties that are tested and proven. The action is raw and exciting, and the thrills and surprises just keep coming to keep you glued to the pages. A solid, satisfying and entrancing ending (?) to this visionary series!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The End of an Era??? By Mr Ron Wingrove The last book in a series is hard to review without reverting to old clichés. Phrases like “thrilling climax” and “grand finale” and “electrifying conclusion” tend to get banded around a lot.Genesis is all that, and more.Old friends become bitter enemies as love is twisted into hate.Shadowy figures from this world and the next play with the fates of mankind like pieces on an inter-dimensional chessboard.Join a cast of friends old and new in Devin O’Branagan’s epic completion of the Legend of Glory trilogy. Watch Glory as she struggles desperately just to stay alive in the face of a destiny that will affect not just her, not just her friends, not just her family, but the fate of the whole world. See Zane as he fights to keep his own soul together even as his inner demons threaten to break his will and his mind.Genesis promises – and delivers – excitement, drama, action and everything else you would expect from one of Devin’s books. If you were filled with questions at the end of Glory and Pretty Sacrifices, then you don’t just want to read this book, you need to read it as fast as possible. This is quite possibly her finest work yet.NB: This review is based on an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy). I suspect the “real” print edition is even better!

Supping with the Devil: A British police procedural (A DCI Monika Paniatowski Mystery), by Sally Spencer

Review “Spencer produces another taut police procedural featuring the flawed but admirable Monica, a gripping plot, and plenty of authentic cop-shop details.” (Booklist)"Spencer has devised a thrill ride that’s not easily forgotten." (Publishers Weekly Starred Review)

About the Author Sally Spencer worked as a teacher both in England and Iran - where she witnessed the fall of the Shah. She now lives in Spain and writes full-time. She is an almost fanatical mah jong player.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Supping with the Devil By Damaskcat This is the first book I’ve read by Sally Spencer but it won’t be the last. Set in the nineteen seventies, the plot is centred round a rock festival held in the grounds of a stately home. DCI Monika Paniatowski has enemies within her own force and as a result she has been side lined and allocated the non-job of adviser on security issues to the rock festival. When the corpse of a journalist is discovered and Monika is excluded from the investigation she feels totally frustrated – but what if she could somehow solve the murder while not being part of the investigation? This is an interesting and well plotted story, with several strands to it and with plenty of humour and some marvellous scenes with the biker gang – the Devil’s Disciples – the least likely security guards in the business. I found Monika’s backstory quite confusing at times and it is probably better to read the series in order than start with this one – the eighth book in the series. I think she is an interesting character and I thought the other police characters were interesting too – especially DS Kate Meadows. I thought the portrait of an incompetent manager in the person of Wellbeloved – a misnomer if ever there was one – was very well done.If you like police procedurals with interesting characters and well-constructed plots then try this series but it is better to start with the first one which is ‘The Dead Hand of History’. I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from NetGalley

Superb Series By RJPetyo In the mid seventies a RockStately rock festival is going to be held on the grounds of Stamford Hall, the estate of the Earl of Ridley outside of Westbridge, England. Although security on the grounds, as per the Earl, is going to be handled by the Devil’s Disciples motorcycle gang (echoes of Altamount), Deputy Chief Inspector Monika Paniatowski is assigned to help out. She knows she is being punished by her boss Chief Constable Baxter, her former lover, who blames her for the death of his wife, but she obeys her instructions.Baxter also assigns someone new to head Paniatowski’s investigative team which soon finds itself handling the murder of a reporter which may or may not be tied to events at the festival where, not surprisingly, drugs are being dealt on the grounds, the Earl’s wife is assaulted, and an intricate system of security cameras shows someone, who may or may not be the murder victim, sneaking through the fence.Paniatowski investigates events at the festival on her own while her team struggles under the inept leadership of DCI Wellbeloved, all the time hoping to be reunited with Paniatowski.I love this police procedural series. The plots are fast moving, the mysteries intriguing, and the investigation always fairly played out. SUPPING WITH THE DEVIL is no exception. There are twists and turns but ultimately the crimes are solved in a logical fashion. But, as always, the strongest component is the characters. They are all here. The blowhard Baxter; Monika; her second in command DCI Beresford, one time neophyte in work and in life; her bagman Kate Meadows, she of a mysterious and violent past; Dr. Shastri, no nonsense medical examiner. Even her mentor Charles Woodend makes an appearance (via phone). Each character is well drawn and believable. This novel begins and ends with very significant events in Monika’s life. As I have said in past reviews, I can’t wait to find out what happens next to these fascinating people.

Roberts First Sentence: The weathermen said it was going to be the hottest summer for fifty years, and on all the available evidence so far, they were right.DCI Monika Paniatowski has a boss who is determined to ruin her career. Her latest assignment takes her away from her team and places her as a security advisor for the rock festival being put on by the Earl of Ridley. But she’s only allowed in the house, whereas security for the grounds and even are being handled by the Devil’s Disciples motorcycle gang. Things change when the body of a tabloid journalist is found.Sally Spencer is a prolific author of three mystery series. Monika Paniatowski was first introduced to us in the 5th Charlie Woodend book, “The Golden Mile to Murder.” That said, it’s not necessary to have read that, or any of the previous books in this series as Spencer is very adept at giving us all the background we need to know about the characters within each book. This is a wonderful skill as new readers don’t feel they’ve missed anything. It is nice to see the way the series are somewhat blended as Woodend did make an appearance in this book.Monika is something of a tough character to like, but there are good reasons for that, of which we learn. Even so, she is respected and appreciated by her team. All except for DCI Wellbeloved, who is anything but. That is balanced out by DS Meadows who is sharp, tough and has an interesting background of her own. If you like a badass, female cop, you’ll love Meadows. The story has very good plot twists. Spencer is very good at the unexpected, at the same time presenting a strong, accurate perspective on the issues with which career women have had to deal; both in the 70s and today.“Supping with the Devil’ is filled with excellent twists, turns and revelations. Spencer has become one of my favorite authors.SUPPING WITH THE DEVIL (Pol Proc-DCI Monika Panatowsk-England-Contemp-1976) – G+Spencer, Sally (aka Alan Rustage) – 8th in seriesSevern House, 2014

In the Shadow of the Heron, by C.A. O'Driscoll

From the Author I began writing this book in May of 2009 when I was home on medical leave. As my first fictional work I was petrified to publish it. However, commonsense finally won over in 2014 and "In the Shadow of the Heron" was released to some outstanding reviews.   My two previous works were nonfiction and about my life. They were so much easier to write and even with their graphic nature, I felt less exposed than I did with this one.    This historical fiction is 100% me. It's my imagination and my heart. I cannot fall back and say, "Well, that's how it happened!" Every word, every verbal illustration and every character is a part of me and I have put it all out there for anyone to read and to judge. It's been nerve wracking but worth it in every facet.   I do hope that these characters touch your soul as they have mine.

About the Author Carrie-Anne O'Driscoll is a certified peace officer/volunteer crisis advocate/Nationally recognized public speaker/wife and mother of two 'tween Boys. They live in Texas.

O’Driscoll By Marichus Real A gifted copy was given in exchange for an honest review.A walk through some of the most important events of America from 1945 to 1983 by the hand of the main character Mary Alice. She tells us her story through history, starting in 1945 when she met her husband Frank. I fell in love with him. It was love at first sight. Frank is the husband we all would like to have, caring, tender, loyal till the very end, and no matter what, always there for her wife. A beautiful story I highly recommend to anybody who likes to enjoy a good reading. Just an advice: get a whole box of tissues, you are going to need them.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A MUST read!!! By Lori Lawton I had read a book by Carrie-Anne before, which was non-fiction and it was written VERY well. Now, with "In the Shadow of the Heron" I LOVE her!! I do not want to give too much away with this review, but you can relate to at least one of the characters (who are VERY well written!!), and get your tissues ladies and gentlemen, this book made me bawl like a baby.It was very surprising to me. I can't say WHAT .. you will have to read the book. I loved it. I think you will too!! GREAT job Carrie-Anne.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic tale that spans decades! By Nik_nak This book seriously blew me away! Unlike anything I've ever read before, and the love and tragedy within the store was so palpable. I found myself tearing up at parts, and smiling to myself in others. When Frank and Mary were alone together, my heart filled with joy--but then I realized the pain that Frank was facing and their relationship became incredibly tragic. I am somewhat of a history nerd myself, and I really enjoyed the inclusion of so many significant historical events. They made the story feel very real and tangible. I devoured this story in about 24 hours, picking it up in any spare moment I had. I HAD to get to the end, I had to find out what happened. Excellent read. I highly recommend it, and I will definitely be picking up any other fiction this author writes.
