The drums of war beat amid global economic ruin. The skies, not the trenches, will decide the survivors. Rich men marshal their resources as all sides race to acquire 100-octane aviation gasoline, an unproven, unstable witches’ brew that could fuel the fastest attack aircraft. In a brutal maze of corporate treason, personal blackmail, and imperfect heroism, a young, brilliant petroleum engineer battling the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma may hold the key.

Eight years ago in Jerusalem, schoolgirl Saba Hassouneh survived the murder of her family. Sentenced to the barbaric refugee camps, Saba is freed by a legendary Bedouin freedom-fighter. She embraces his life of a bandit/rebel, evolving into a fearsome Arab nationalist femme de guerre hunted by the colonial powers and religious mullahs. Saba has one mission: free her people.

An epic historical thriller from acclaimed author Charlie Newton, Traitor’s Gate races toward the first shot of WWII. As the world’s true rulers vie for dominion, two unlikely lovers collide. Their attraction is immediate, their goals opposite.

Traitor's Gate, by Charlie Newton

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review: Hard-driving, vivid storytelling propels this historical thriller from Edgar finalist Newton (Calumet City). During the decade leading up to WWII, governments and corporations fumble for profitable alliances, heedless of human suffering. Against this dark backdrop, two people develop an unlikely romance: Saba Hassouneh, an idealistic Palestinian who has been radicalized by brutal British soldiers and Haganah thugs, and Eddie Owen, a brilliant American chemical engineer forced to flee the States, who is now retooling oil refineries to produce 100-octane gas that every country’s air force craves. Ruthless, suave Nazi Erich Schroeder, an officer in the Luftwaffe, plots to build a kingdom for himself in the Middle East, and to that end he tries to manipulate Saba and Eddie—but the young people are genuinely attracted to each other and begin groping toward a trusting relationship in the midst of tangled deception. Newton’s prose is sometimes as frantic as James Ellroy’s, but the action feels more like an Indiana Jones adventure.

From Kirkus Reviews

Ranging from Oklahoma's Dust Bowl to a Mediterranean cauldron of conspiracies, Newton (Start Shooting, 2012, etc.) leaves noir behind to go into grand-scale Michener-mode. Amid the Great Depression, while the family farm blows away in the Dust Bowl, Eddie Owen earns a University of Oklahoma petroleum engineering degree and a reputation as a savant. A former professor calls, one who's built an oil company on Eddie's theory: cracking petroleum to make 110 octane aviation gas. Unrest in Europe means war's looming, so Eddie's dispatched to modify a Bahrain refinery, and that catches the attention of the Nazis and Brits who need fuel for their Messerschmitts and Spitfires. A Giant-size love story awaits. Sabra Hassouneh, a Palestinian professor's daughter, has endured gang-rape and refugee-camp starvation to become Minchar al Gorab, the Raven, a feared guerrilla fighter pursued by Brits and Zionists. Within this "cauldron of hate, mistrust, and murder," Eddie converts refineries in Bahrain, Haifa, and Tenerife. Meanwhile, Sabra fights British marines and Pan-Arab Army of God mullahs before carrying her cause to Tenerife. With Eddie politically naïve and worried mostly about his family's welfare and Sabra driven by the idea of freedom for Palestine, they might not make an obvious couple, but they are striking characters, and their growing love is powerfully sketched. Secondary players, however, are from central casting, like Göring's man Erich Schroeder, a suave sociopath intent on co-opting Eddie and his magic cracking talents. Incorporating sufficient plot threads to weave an Arab kaffiyeh—including an FDR assassination plot—Newton turns Standard Oil, IG Farbing, anti-Semitic Henry Ford, and international bankers into fascist co-conspirators—"The politics of oil and war was a cesspool"—all working to keep Eddie from saving Sabra and then escaping to the U.S. carrying blueprints proving Hitler plans death camps. A Texas-size epic—think Wouk's Winds of War—with an amorphous conclusion perhaps portending a sequel.

[A quick bit of disclosure: I edited this novel for the author some time ago.] Now, if you know anything about Charlie Newton's previous work, you're aware that he's published two previous thrillers -- both blistering crime novels featuring cops in contemporary Chicago. For me, this book was quite the departure from his norm, and I wasn't sure I'd like it. Needless to say, like it I did. In fact, after falling in love with Saba and Eddie Owen (the book's VERY different protagonists), I felt separation anxiety when the story ended. Such great characters, and such superb writing. This wasn't the way historical novels were supposed to read!If I had to identify one thing that TRAITOR'S GATE does that most thrillers don't and can't, it's that it affords a different view, an alternate take, on what we think we already know well. WWII was about many, many things. But who knew how critical OIL was to the opposing alliances' hopes of victory. And not only oil, but high-octane aviation fuel. Control the fuel, control your destiny. That was 100% new to me, and it meant that WWII was fought not only in places like Kursk and Normandy, but also in Tenerife and Haifa. Sure, Casablanca was a hot-bed of spy maneuvering, but in TRAITOR'S GATE we get British Mandate Palestine. Who knew?Charlie Newton also affords readers an alternate view of the patriot-style terrorist in heroine Saba, through whose eyes we learn what it feels like to be oppressed, abused, and desperate for some semblance of liberty. A true freedom-fighter, she adds an historical dimension to the Palestinians depicted in American news. And Eddie....well, a more unlikely spy was never written in fiction. And he acquits himself quite well.As mentioned, I'm partial to Newton's work.. You'll have to judge for yourself, but I'd call this a must-read for anyone who loves thrillers or 20th-century historical fiction.

Gripping yarn, as relevant today as the period in which it's set By Bill T8 Sir Isaac Newton, it is said, was an alchemist as well as a scientist, who made various attempts to turn disparate substances into gold. Now comes another brilliant Newton who has taken disparate characters--a female Palestinian freedom fighter, an engineer who's a refugee of sorts from the Oklahoma dust bowl and his own past, a Nazi who would carve his own kingdom out of the Middle East--and created something that is... well, golden. The plot is driven by engineer Eddie Owen's discovery of a process that could create a new high-octane aviation fuel which, with World War Two looming, would give either side in the struggle airplanes that would fly faster and farther. And whoever controls the skies, likely wins the war. (In real life, imagine if the British hadn't been able to avoid a German invasion by winning the Battle of Britain.)Owen is dispatched to the Middle East to learn if the process he's discovered can actually be produced in the field. There he meets Palestinian freedom-fighter Saba, igniting a personal chemistry as potent, and volatile, as the high-octane aircraft fuel Eddie is trying to create. Throw in a scheming agent of Herman Goring's who is manipulating Eddie and Saba, and the plot blasts into full motion. And to paraphrase that other Newton (Isaac, not Charlie), something in motion tends to stay in motion. And does the story ever move, from Manhattan Island to the Bavarian Alps, and all across the Middle East.I liked Newton's (Charlie, not Isaac) first two novels and, I'll admit, was a little dubious about such a big switch in genres: from modern-day first person thrillers to a sweeping historical epic. But he's managed to pull it off.Traitor's Gate is one of those novels that you think about--miss, actually-- when you have to put it down to do other things. The bad news is, now that I've finished, I'm already missing Eddie and Saba and even Schroeder, the Nazi spy. The good news is that Newton's (Charlie, not Isaac) web site says he has a sequel in the works.I can't wait.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant Historical Novel By Readerly I loved Calumet City by Charlie Newton. This book's bigger and better. It reminded me of Winds of War by Herman Wouk because it takes on huge global events by telling a great love story. But Newton's a better writer than Wouk. He creates terrific characters and sets them off on a wild adventure that feels like it ought to be a Steven Spielberg movie. This book should be on everyone's summer reading list. I can't wait for the sequel. There is going to be a sequel, right?

Inspired, well-trained, and spiritually mature deacons can be a mighty force for the church, and local American churches need their servants to excel in their ministry and service to the Body of Christ now more than ever. Most pastors and deacons in America are sincere in their desire to serve, but many do not receive enough advanced orientation, and even more receive no ongoing training at all. This lack can create much frustration and may even overwhelm deacons and their families as they try to manage the minefields of ministry.

Daily Devotions for Deacons, by Russell R. Cook, guides deacons in daily preparation for their enormous and invaluable task and inspires them to become all Christ means for them to be. This guide for deacons offers a year of brief yet deeply spiritual and relevant biblical devotions. For a few moments a day, five days a week, all who desire to live as fully devoted followers of Christ will benefit from Cook’s years of teaching and training pastors and deacons across America.

By learning the principles and qualities necessary for a strong, effective ministry, and by applying these same qualities of service in everyday life, we begin to fulfill our God-given role and draw ever closer to His presence and His truth.

It's very conservative and very basic but all good. I'm from a very contemporary church and what makes it feel old is the quotations from very old hyms. However, it is a very good review of the biblical role of deacons.

The story of the birth of murder, The Mark of Cain is a novel that strips the traditional story of Cain and Abel of mystery and builds a story based on canonical and apocryphal documents. Adding common sense and the natural inclinations of humans that have been in place over the millennia, it is the story chronicling the most important and tragic event of mankind - the introduction of murder and treachery. Set in the Valley of di-Ahman, where Adam dwells, it is the story of Cain and his beloved brother Abel. Their relationship, which had been close and loving since their childhood, turns dark when a New God is introduced to the Valley. Cain's natural inclinations toward greed and wealth increase when his sacrifice is rejected and he is denied his hearts desire.

Johanna (Journey Through Darkness Book 1), by Mary Hodge

About the Author I was born in a big red barn of a house on June 15, 1935. A brother had proceeded me but the unfortunate infant contacted pneumonia and lived only three months. Needless to say I was anxiously awaited and assumed to be a boy. Nevertheless I was cuddled and spoiled. Soon my sister joined our family. Money was scarce throughout the great depression, but my family was rich in love; more so eight years later when our brother appeared. My first great discovery was the public library. At home we had only one children's book; a big thick blue one with bible stories and pictures of a tower falling down, Daniel in the lion's den and Abraham - well; I loved the book anyway. I married shortly after my twentieth birthday. Charles and I have two special daughters and a delightful granddaughter. We look forward to our sixtieth anniversary in 2015. I spent over 25 years working with people diagnosed with a mental illness. My experiences included evaluations, therapy, staff training and development, program design and implementation, administration, family involvement and consumer advocacy. My therapeutic techniques varied with the need of the person treated. I served on the Executive board of a consumer-run not-for-profit which I was instrumental in developing. This organization on its tenth anniversary honored me with a Life-Time Achievement Award. Writing has been my strength and my fun. My reports on my client evaluations included both detailed descriptions of the processes involved and a through analysis of the data. My program descriptions and careful write-ups regarding needs brought us funds from state and national grants This ability also contributed to my selection to the limited work-study doctoral program provided by New York University in the 1970's. As a finalist from over 100 candidates I was invited to the oral exam and given one of the twelve chairs available. Also, my required written thesis was accepted on first presentation. This enabled me to begin my dissertation according to the timeline originally projected by the professors and become one of the two who received the Doctorate of Public Administration with a specialty in Mental Health Policy in under four years. In addition to my contributions to the not-for-profit board, in the years that followed I led the way to the creation of a local quilting guild. Through quilt auctions this group raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and assisted many other people and groups in need.

Every great story starts at the beginning and "Johanna" does this By Fred Tomasello Jr. Every great story starts at the beginning and "Johanna" is a young lady maturing into womanhood and faced with the eternal question: Should I follow my parents' advice or make my own choices. Of course, she decides to follow her destiny, leading to an early marriage, moving to another country, and coping with the results of those decisions. Strong in descriptive details and dialogue, "Johanna" leads us through challenges typical to every young person looking for adventure. A good read by a great storyteller and I'm looking forward to the next installment of this story.

A shocking ancient secret. The origins of western civilization discovered. The Renaissance—our most fundamental age of technological and artistic advance, was built upon a secret passed down to a banking family in Florence—the Medici. 500 years ago that secret was buried. Florence, Italy, present day. A trove of letters belonging to the Medici family is discovered underground. Archaeologist Kat Cullen comes across a map that leads her to the Swiss Alps where her partner is murdered and she is left for dead. Kat’s husband, professor and classicist—Jack Cullen, rushes to investigate. He joins with Chester Allen, a scientist from surveillance enterprise TerraTEK Industries, and together they begin to unravel the mystery of the Medici letters in hopes of determining what happened in the Alps. As they dig deeper, Jack stumbles across a secret—the infamous Medici treasure is real. However, word gets out and Jack soon realizes he’s not the only one interested in finding it…a deadly and elusive assassin attempts to seize control, throwing Jack into a series of harrowing escapades—riding horseback through the streets of Siena, discovering clues inside ancient cathedrals, deciphering 500 year-old cryptosystems and navigating an underground labyrinth in order to solve a secret so powerful it could change the world forever. This fast-paced adventure blends together a modern-day treasure hunt with historic accounts of Lorenzo de’Medici in Renaissance Florence in an international thriller with plenty of dark twists and exciting turns.

Review "Fast-paced and adventurous. A must-read. Mystery, murder, danger and excitement... every emotion is played out in this book. I was hooked from the start and I was not disappointed." - Vicki Goodwin, The Page Turner"With Taylor's deft pen he scribes a blend of history, intrigue, with close enough traces of reality that make this a monumental tome. Truth stranger than fiction - and told with a propulsive force that more than lightens the questions of the mysteries that continue to surround the Medici's." -Grady Harp, Amazon Hall of Fame, Top 100 Reviewer GOODREADS REVIEWS★★★★★ "Very Exciting!"★★★★★ "I love history, i love suspense, I love NEEDING to flip through the pages and that's what I got from this book!!"★★★★★ "Exciting Indiana Jones-esque mystery with a present-day treasure hunt through the Medici world of Florence, Italy and beyond. You "Letter" believe it! @badwordplay By Owen Robinson Archaeologist Kat Cullen is researching 14th century family, the Medici’s, when she comes across a cache of letters and documents belonging to them. Among those pages is a map that leads her to the Alps, where her partner is murdered, and she is left for dead. Her husband, Jack Cullen, and scientist Chester Allen, rush to uncover more of the Medici’s secrets hidden within the documents, to try and understand what has happened. What follows is an international thriller centered around this historic and powerful family, with actual world changing consequences. To make comparisons to The DaVinci Code are at the same time obvious and a little unfair. Obvious, since it is an international mystery thriller centered around high profile historical figures, with wide sweeping ramifications. And Unfair, because who would want their book to be directly compared to such a popular book? But I have to say, despite being in the terrible spot of being compared to Dan Brown, this was a very enjoyable read. The Medici family was slightly familiar, but definitely less than Leonardo Da Vinci, so I had a lot of catching up to do in that regard. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story as much as I did the current day action and thriller aspects, and I think they were seamlessly melded together to create an engaging read.At the end of the day, I very much enjoyed this book. And while I do feel a little bit bad with all of the comparisons to the other book, at least The Medici Letters has good company.

It is about a part of history that really interest me which made the book a better read. It took me back to the fourteenth century. This is a book about a secret from that time that has recently been revealed. It seems like the author done extensive research to make sure the book was accurate as possible. This book is put together better than most books I read about history. This story kept me entertained from the beginning to the last page. It was definitely a page-turner. It was hard for me to lay down. If you like The Davinci Code or books similar to that you will love this book. I highly recommend the book to all the history buffs. I look forward to reading more books by Taylor Buck that take me back in history. This book was worth the read.

By Metella I loved that this book included a look into the past to set up the present mystery. It was modern, fresh and fast paced ... with plenty of accurate history presenting in a way that was entertaining not lecturing. LOVED the impromptu horseback ride.Great characters - a nice fresh twist on the archeology dig / find and bad guys trying to get the prize ... since the prize doesn't really show up until the end!!! :) Can't wait for the next book.

Comments on The Shadows By Guang Wu In general, this story is less interesting than the previous stories I read, The Princess and Curdie and The Princess and the Goblin. An impression is that the shadow does good and help humans.Strong points: author shows his deep understanding of human society, and his great imagination.Weak points: the story lacks of plot, which appears less attractive.Anyway I have no such imagination by looking at shadow to create a story.

Margins too narrow hard to read near binding edge By DHB These are great stories by George MacDonald but if you want an easy to read large print, look for another edition. First it's a wide format paperpack (I should have checked the dimensions). But worse than that, the margins are too narrow so that it's difficult to open the book wide enough to read the text near the bound edge of the pages. Maybe one should steer away from books by its publisher: Bibliobazaar.

Although by common consent the greatest theologian of the Anglican tradition, Richard Hooker is little known in Protestant circles more generally, and increasingly neglected within the Anglican Communion. Although scholarship on Hooker has witnessed a dramatic renaissance within the last generation, thus far this has tended to make Hooker less, not more accessible to general audiences, and interpreters have been sharply divided on the meaning of his theology. This book aims to draw upon recent research in order to offer a fresh portrait of Hooker in his original historical context, one in which it had not yet occurred to any Englishman to assume the label "Anglican" and to bring him to life for all branches of the contemporary church. Part One examines his life, writings, and reputation, puncturing several old myths along the way. Part Two seeks to establish Hooker's theological and pastoral vision, exploring why he wrote, how he wrote, whom he was seeking to persuade, and whom he was seeking to refute. Part Three analyzes key themes of Hooker's theology-Scripture, Law, Church, and Sacraments-and how they related to his late Reformation context. Finally, the concluding chapter proposes Hooker's method as a model for our confused contemporary age, combining fidelity to Scripture, historical awareness, and a pastorally sensitive pragmatism.

Richard Hooker: A Companion to His Life and Work (Cascade Companions), by W. Bradford Littlejohn

Review ''Richard Hooker is a name that many church people have heard of, but few have ever dipped into his works . . . Brad Littlejohn brings to bear an impressive range and depth of scholarship and critical insight to set Hooker in the context of the controversies of his time, and guides us through the maze of contemporary interpretations of Hooker's thought and significance.''--Paul Avis, Professor of Theology, University of Leeds''Littlejohn's companion, Richard Hooker, offers a splendidly accessible introduction to the life and work of this eminent but popularly neglected early-modern English theologian and philosopher . . . This volume offers an excellent point of departure for both scholars and non-specialist readers.''--Torrance Kirby, Professor of Ecclesiastical History, McGill University''Richard Hooker is the theologian of Anglicanism. But is he a theologian for Anglicans alone? Assuredly not! In this companion to Hooker, Littlejohn has produced a clearly written and accessible work that utilizes the recent resurgence of scholarly interest in Hooker to commend him to a wider audience. . . . It is sure to be a resource of choice for those seeking a way into the thought of this great post-Reformation divine.''--Oliver D. Crisp, Fuller Theological Seminary --Wipf and Stock Publishers

By Kedwardwilliams A lucid and enjoyable introduction to the work of Richard Hooker. Littlejohn is a clear writer and he does good work giving the reader a compelling digest of Hooker's thought. If the goal is to leave you wanting to read more Hooker, then it does its job. But the book is also an accessible introduction to the key themes and problems in Hooker scholarship, and here Littlejohn certainly has his own interpretation he's advocating. He wants to convince us that we have to think more carefully about the relationship between Hooker and the Reformed tradition, the ways in which Hooker was indeed sympathetic to it, and the ways in which Anglicanism tout court should be understood within international Calvinism. On these points and more, this volume welcomes you into a larger scholarly conversation and gives you a good ground on which to study Hooker further.

Basic Foundation Bible - 400 Year Old KJV Translation By Conny “As its name implies, the KJV Foundation Study Bible is designed to provide a foundation for Bible study,” states the introduction to the book.~ What ~This 1,472-page hardbound targets those who are looking for a study Bible based on the long-standing, time-honored version of the Holy Bible. Including the full text of the four-hundred-year-old transcription, added are study and theological notes, in-text subject headings, book introductions, cross references, a concordance, and full-color maps. Deep red wording highlight Jesus’s words.~ Why ~Wanting the closest to the original writings of the Word of God, I am a staunch fan of the KJV, so this Bible version works for me. Reading daily, I appreciate this one has bolded paragraph headings as well as footnotes at the bottom of the pages. The beginning of every book has its author, time, key verses, and theme.~ Why Not ~If you are older like me, the font on the pages is somewhat small. Also, the paper used is thin, so letters lightly bleed through from the backside of the pages. Some may consider that the notes are not in depth compared to other study Bibles.~ Who ~The back jacket states that Thomas Nelson guarantees the quality of the Bible.~ Wish ~Using thin paper and a small font make daily Bible reading hard for older individuals, so I wish thicker paper and a larger print were used or available.~ Want ~If you are looking for a basic Bible with a translation has been around longer than other versions and is probably closest to the original transcripts, this version is the best option in my opinion. However, it may not be the best when it comes to its study notes.Rated 4.5 of 5 StarsThanks to Book Look Bloggers for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review based on the reader’s honest opinion.

BACK TO BASICS WITH KING JAMES By Marsha Randolph Without my great great grandmother I would not be here and without the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible the other translations may not have existed. No matter how many different translations of the Bible there may be I think everyone should read the KJV of the Bible at least once.Of the many Bibles available Thomas Nelson has a KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE that is perfect for anyone who wants to read this particular translation. It includes: cross-references, study noes, maps and a concordance; of course the words of Jesus are in red. I was looking for a King James Bible because I wanted to go back to basics. With most Bibles that are published today the deciding factor as to what makes it good for you is what is highlighted. The KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE uses section headings to draw the readers attention to a particular theme, for example: the heading for Isaiah 48:1-8 is “Israel’s Obstinate Nature.”THE KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE makes it easy for the individual to learn precepts and principles in Scripture without the assistance of a theologian. As part of my personal Bible Study reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelations but not in a year as many do. I have read those other translations and I decided they were cute but I love the old way better. There is a NKJV Foundation Bible but I will be using the KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE as my cross reference book, NKJV is the primary read. I like the format for this book witch includes the cross references together in a text box on the bottom right corner of the page. And I cannot complain about the font which is readable no matter which glasses I use.The KJV FOUNDATION STUDY BIBLE is an excellent investment and I recommend it. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. Happily, the more recent editions have dispensed with the script used back in the 1600’s and opted for a more modern one. It’s my understanding that the translation itself has not been altered, but that realm belongs to the experts. The features available in this particular version from Thomas Nelson are what I intend to address. As the title states, this is a study Bible. The notes do not intrude or interfere with the main text and are not available for every verse. That keeps the number of pages to a more manageable size and weight. Those notes are generally basic, but insightful. Each book has a brief introduction covering the author, date, theme, and a key verse. Cross references, a concordance, and a good set of color maps round out the study material available in this edition. As listed on the dust jacket the words of Jesus are in red, a feature that some prefer. One of the nicest features that I found was that this book has a guarantee related to its workmanship available on the Thomas Nelson website. I did check on that, and if it falls apart it can be replaced, assuming normal use, of course. I tried to break the hardbound copy I have and failed. That made me happy since I’ve had several Bibles from different publishers that did come apart.I would recommend this Bible as a good, basic, personal size study Bible. One other note, I found the font size and clarity adequate for most readers except those that need the extra large print perhaps.I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a review.

Nearly a year has passed since the Office of Adaptive and Complementary Enhancement Technologies went public. Agent Rachel Peng has adapted to her new life as the cyborg liaison to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police, but for Peng and her team, murder is usually just the beginning. This time, the body is found in the unlikeliest of places, and the race to recover a stolen piece of antiquity will put Rachel and her team against one of the country's most powerful political figures. ____________________________________ Reviews for the Rachel Peng novels: “And after spending the length of the novel with her, I'm eager to pick up the next one to see what's next for Rachel Peng” (io9) “If I have any regrets about Rachel Peng, it's that we're unlikely to ever see her front and center on a multiplex screen, cracking wise before she shoots somebody's kneecaps off. And we should. Rachel Peng is a bad-ass for the digital age.” (New York Times bestselling author, Seanan McGuire)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend any and all of her work By J Broin STATE MACHINE is the third book of the Rachel Peng series, and K.B. Spangler's fourth book set in the same world as her webcomic, A GIRL AND HER FED. I highly recommend any and all of her work.* I especially recommend reading this series in order, for though Spangler does do small, narratively appropriate summaries in each book, you'll have an unnecessarily long time of catching up if you start with STATE MACHINE. Also, you'd be missing two excellent books. And if webcomics aren't your thing: don't worry! It's not necessary to read the webcomic to enjoy the books (in fact, reading the books inspired my sister to read the webcomic, whereas I discovered them the other way 'round), though there are definitely moments in the books and comic when it is REALLY nice to be a fan of both. Those moments add layers to those who know, but still serve perfectly functional roles in the respective formats. Now, onto the specifics of the book.I remember being a little shocked at how different MAKER SPACE (the second book) was from DIGITAL DIVIDE (the first book). By the time I wrote my review, I had come to the conclusion that the difference was a necessity for the character. Rachel needs to be pushed against as many boundaries as possible, partially because she's so reluctant to push them herself, partially because she's best in the thick of things. This is never more true than in STATE MACHINE. This time, it's not the murder that's weird or a wild bomber on the loose. It's actually pretty straight-forward: a robbery gone wrong with the suspect on video. Nah, what's weird are all the situations Rachel finds herself in.Why in heaven's name was she called to investigate a crime in the White House? Why are political bigwigs and leaders approaching her as opposed to her bosses? AND SINCE WHEN DID A BROKEN LUMP OF INDETERMINATE MATERIAL/ORIGIN MERIT MURDER?! Rachel is confused. And a confused Rachel is a LOT more fun.Part of the reason confused Rachel is such great fun is because it leads her to consult a varied cast of experts. Some of them are expert cyborgs, some of them are expert cops, many of them are experts in all things geek, but all of them are a joy to be around. Mark Hill really got a lot of time in this book, and I'm so glad he did. He and Rachel are both gifted interrogators and the scenes in which they work together and separately are fascinating. The rapport that comes from this shared talent and similar military histories is better. Mark doesn't say much, but when he does, it's usually a fantastic scene. Phil, Jason, Santino, Mako, and Zockinski are all back in full and glorious form, too. Rachel never lacks for good company. It makes for a wonderful series in which the core cast of characters is so solidly enjoyable, but the rotating cast of characters is nothing to sneeze at, either. One of Spangler's talents is in memorable, compelling characters of all types and involvement. I found myself missing tertiary characters from the previous novels and hoping that some of the tertiary characters in STATE MACHINE might be coming back.Another part of the reason that confused Rachel is a better Rachel is that she functions on instinct. And that instinctual, reactive behavior is often hilarious and intense, but it also has the potential to go very, VERY wrong. I LOVE that Rachel is deeply fallible. Her instincts serve her well a goodly portion of the time, but sometimes they're dead wrong. The fact that, when she is wrong in this book, she admits it, commits to doing better, and brings in people she can trust to hold her accountable shows a remarkable amount of character growth from previous books. Not that she's perfect - Rachel still has a secret or ten - but she's starting to realize that her instincts aren't always the best thing to fall back on. She's growing in the books, and I love her for it.(Let's be honest, though: the biggest reason confused Rachel is so fun is because she is the worst cyborg in the history of cyborgs and this means Santino, her partner in the Metro PD, gets to tease her more. That's excellent giggles, that is.)As always, I must mention how refreshing it is to see a diversity of race, religion, gender, sexuality, etc, so seamlessly and thoroughly melded into a script. In the tiringly white, straight entertainment world, Spangler's multi-dimensional cast is a sweet relief, and makes for a much more enjoyable experience than standard, popular fiction fare. That the main character is female, Chinese-American, and a lesbian (AND NO ONE - in world - GIVES A D*MN) is all the more precious to me, as a reader. Perhaps the only thing I haven't seen represented in the books are trans individuals of any type (transgender, transsexuals, non-binary, genderfluid, etc) and while it is a curious lack, I have faith. It was just in this book that Spangler included a polyamorous relationship, so I know she continues to do her best to include more people and more perspectives. It's difficult to talk about specific plot point without spoilers, but the emotional notes this manuscript hits are right up there with the amusing ones. Rachel's ability to see the emotional spectrum could easily lead to an over-wrought, mawkish manuscript. Rather, this ability lends itself to endless puzzle-solving, acknowledging both the universality and individual complexity that is the human experience. Also, while the morality of technology and how humans use it is addressed, it's not preachy or even definitive. It's a discussion consistent to these books, and I appreciate the layers that come with each new plot and situation (I LOVED the 'what is math and what does that mean' scenes in this book).I will say, sometimes Spangler can be a bit hard to follow from conclusion to conclusion. Not that she lacks a clarity, but because I am convinced she wants the reader to conclude for themselves. Imagine a chasm just broad enough for you to have to stretch to leap across - that's much what the reading experience is like. As a long-time reader, I'm used to this and can better track the thought processes of her and her characters. New readers do, however, sometimes struggle. (For example, while my sister and I enjoy the challenge of puzzling out the steps Spangler takes, a dear friend of mine couldn't make it work and therefore couldn't get into the books.) Know that, in my humble opinion, it's worth it not only because these gaps allow for reader interaction and interpretation, but for the interesting ways in which it makes the brain consider the problem. I am of the opinion that a good author MUST do this, but acknowledge that not everyone enjoys the stretch (or re-reading passages a couple times when necessary). The wonderful political scheming is back. I am a big fan of political conspiracies, so long as they're not of the 'every one is terrible and there is no hope' variety (AKA: a LOT of popular books and TV shows). Everything, even the casual conversations at parties, could be high stakes. It's so much fun to follow Spangler (and Rachel) through these labyrinthine mazes to see which of the many potential outcomes resolves at the end of the book. And though it hurts, it's nice that Rachel rarely wins entirely, and sometimes loses miserably. All in all, what I love most about the books keeps coming back in new and interesting ways. I adore this series and am THRILLED at the prospect of a book from Hope Blackwell's perspective (she's one of the main characters of the comic), as well as the future Rachel Peng installments. I have so much fun being a guest in this world, I wish I never had to leave.A+ (flawed but improving main character, excellent secondary characters, new situations with brilliant continuity, intrinsic diversity, complex political and moral discussions; no trans characters, occasionally difficult to track the thought processes, never long enough to last between book releases)*It's no secret that I'm an avid K.B. Spangler fan. I've been eager and anxious for each book, supported the first when it was in serialized format, bought extra copies of the books for my local library, etc, etc, etc. So, do take this with as many grains of salt as you feel necessary, as I am a SuperFan (tm). That being said, I think I treat the manuscript fairly and accurately. Because I am said SuperFan (tm), I ALWAYS have high expectations for Spangler's work. She has never disappointed.

Like the first two books, it blends the police-procedural and techno-thriller genres with profound questions about the intersections between law and technology, and the ethical and legal difficulties that arise when technology evolves faster than the law can adapt.Spangler's heroine and her fellow Agents care deeply about those questions, not only out of patriotism but also as a matter of survival, and I finished the book with a new appreciation for them as well. The close third-person narration and a warm (and occasionally sarcastic) sense of humor kept me inside Rachel's head, cheering on her successes and sympathetic to her failures.State Machine is entertaining, thought-provoking, and highly relevant to today's technological and legal issues.

A very different kind of Cyborg story By Amazon Customer This is the third part of the novelized back story for the web comic "A Girl and Her Fed" featuring Rachel Peng, a side character from the comic. The web comic started in 2006, with a quirky, minimalistic art style and really interesting storytelling, a mildly science-fantasy flavored story about a scatterbrained but brilliant woman who has been befriended by the ghost of Benjamin Franklin, and the nearly emotionless, monolith of a federal agent assigned to watch her when her name appears on a terrorist watch list.Spangler went through her archives and re-drew the first year or so of the story, revising the storytelling to reflect her improvement as a writer and to get rid of unnecessarily 'cute' or overly-timely bits. You can still find the older art and story under the 'flip arrow' in the corner of the comics. It's a bit of a jolt when you get to the end of the 'redrawn' part because there's about six months' worth (at slightly over one comic page per week) between the end of the redrawn part and the point where Spangler changes to her new art style. If you want to read it, you can find it at www.agirlandherfed.com -- but be warned, it can eat up a day or two of your time, catching up. The storytelling in the comic is every bit as good as in the book, and you can see her developing as a writer. The science fantasy element continues to develop in the books and in the web comic, and because it's been happening since 2006, there are a few minor inconsistencies and 'gotchas' that Spangler acknowledges. Further, not everything is seen from a single point-of-view, and that means that not everything is going to look the same.Technically, Spangler is an exceptionally good writer. She has minimal misspellings, wrong-homonyms, and grammatical glitches, and avoids the trap of telling rather than showing through her story narration. This is especially important since each book contains a mystery, appropriately to Rachel Peng's job as a detective with the Washington DC Metro Police. There are very few (if any) missing threads, each character is presented as a person with multiple facets, even when they're a walk-on, and there is a strong sense of place and continuity between the events in this book and the two previous books and the web comic - there are a few 'call-outs' to insider secrets from the web comic that are not seen in these books that web comic readers will immediately recognize, but since our protagonist and her compatriots do not know those secrets, they simply don't have any effect on what the characters in the book actually see or understand. She writes political context into her stories, without revealing an untoward inclination in any specific direction. Her dry wit strikes both conservative and liberal thought the lens of her characters. However, it's important to know that the protagonist, and the special agency she is part of, all exist as a part of a conspiracy, headed by one person who starts as a wealthy industrialist who moves into politics to further his conspiracy. The conspiracy is to create human weapons, using a computer chip and advanced science that connects into the brains of these weapons, giving them a sort of super-access to computers and machines via an energy frequency nobody quite understands yet. It's this cyborg nature that gives Rachel her special gifts and handicaps. The conspiracy used an intrusive, obnoxious interface that responded to emotions to force the agents into a state of emotional withdrawal, then abused prescription psychoactive drugs to 'treat' them and force them further down. The reason for this: to create absolutely obedient, emotionless, unquestioning weapons who would do what their controllers told them. How that failed, is not part of the three books, which deal with the aftermath: an agency of 400 people who are intimately connected as a 'family' and who now have to make sure that they cannot be abused and misused. Because these people are patriots - every one of them volunteered for the operation, though they were lied to about the outcome.A warning about this book and the other two, and the comic: it's written for adults. Not "young adults" - if your 14 year old (or you, for that matter) can't think about sex between characters as being something that happens, that may be humorous or horrible or wonderful, or simply a thing that gets mentioned, then you won't want that person reading this, lest they encounter ideas that might make them think differently.People die. People get shot. There's injustice that doesn't get resolved. There's moral ambiguity, and moral standard, and intelligent thought and discussion between characters about what ethics are good, what government can and should do, and what the nature of responsibility is, on a personal, corporate, business, and government level (for a variety of government agencies.) This is a peculiarly American book as well - the flaws and the strengths of our country, the topics of terrorism, conspiracy, and individual rights and responsibilities, are examined overtly and covertly. There's also adult language, and there may be a few dirty words. There may even be creative use of new ones. You should read this book.

By Awesome Indies Reviews Bloodie Bones, the first book in the Dan Foster mystery series by Lucienne Boyce, introduces Dan Foster, converted from a wayward pickpocket by Noah, his mentor who taught him the discipline of boxing. Foster has become a Principal Officer; an undercover police officer in the late 1700s, charged with investigating and bringing to justice those committing crimes against the King’s law. When Lord Oldfields, a magistrate and wealthy landowner, asks for assistance to determine who murdered his gamekeeper, Josh Castle, Foster’s superior dispatches him to the small village. Disguising himself as a wandering itinerant, Foster becomes part of the gang of poachers who are Lord Oldfields’ real targets. In the process, he uncovers deeds from the past, some so evil that their perpetrators will do anything—including murder—to keep them hidden.Lucienne is a masterful storyteller, skillfully weaving history, culture, and the social customs of the period into the story in a natural manner that not only piques the reader’s interest, but helps the reader with a watchful eye and attentive mind to figure out whodunit. This story has a profound theme. The injustices perpetrated upon the poor by the privileged, how people react to events over which they have little or no control, and the importance of integrity and empathy in alleviating the human condition. Not one word in this story is wasted, and it is told in a manner that both entertains and educates—the true sign of a master wordsmith. Extremely well edited, I could not find one comma or semicolon out of place, and unlike books by some of today’s bestsellers, no misspellings or grammatical glitches—nary a one.Unlike many books I read, which are good stories, but contain a few formatting or other errors, making it impossible for me to give them a top rating in all honesty, I found nothing here that gives me pause; and, I re-read several passages just to make sure. Actually, I have to get personal here and say that I re-read several passages because I found the prose so entertaining, I just wanted to go back over it to enjoy reading truly great writing.I found everything about this book engrossing, from a cover that conveyed in stark symbolism the theme of the story, to passages that glistened with brilliance. The characters were magnificently portrayed. Dan Foster, the protagonist, is totally captivating—from his willingness to face his own weaknesses, to his devotion to right and justice, but most compelling, his sense of honor and decency. Even the secondary characters were fully fleshed and well-rounded, creating a setting that made me feel that I was there. I could see, hear, and smell the surroundings, and sense what characters were thinking and feeling in a story that was impossible to put down once I started reading. An easy five stars.

Compelling mystery story featuring a new historical detective, Dan Foster By Debbie Young A cracking read, highlighting in a very readable and enjoyable way the social changes brought about the Enclosures Act, without which, arguably, the Industrial Revolution would have been slower to arrive - or might even have been avoided altogether. This is a much neglected topic in historical fiction, in my experience at least, yet still very relevant to the modern reader, not only because the way it changed our landscape for ever, but also because there are still rumblings in the news about property rights and rambling issues.I really enjoyed what is billed as the first in a series of Dan Foster mysteries. Dan is a flawed but basically honourable and likeable Bow Street Runner who is posted out of town to help solve a local murder mystery. In Holmesian tradition, he infiltrates the local community to get to the heart of the matter, and finds himself torn between the ruling class and the workers.A meticulously researched novel that really opened my eyes to that era, which I'll now be much more interested in. I'll certainly be keen to read more of Dan's adventures, whether set in London, where he's based with his interesting and challenging family (his plight as the thwarted husband of an angry, alcoholic woman is very poignant), or despatched elsewhere to wherever mysteries need to be solved.Disclosure: I was a beta reader for this book, as you might guess from seeing a quote by me on the back of the paperback!

Ray Dan Foster, a former boxer, is working as a Bow Street Runner, a kind of deputy marshal or sheriff, in England in the late 1790s. When he’s sent to investigate the death of a gamekeeper, thought to have been the victim of poachers, his valor and integrity are put to the test. Moreover, he has to deal with local superstitions and his growing feelings for a local woman and her son.Bloodie Bones by Lucienne Boyce is a fantastic blend of history and mystery, with the author merging the history, culture and social customs of the era very effectively into a riveting story. The characters are three dimensional and very real, and you’ll find yourself choosing sides early on in the story—rooting for your side and wishing ill-will upon the other side.Boyce did a great job of showing the uniqueness of the characters and the language of the time without overwhelming the reader with excessive dialect. A great summer read for mystery buffs.
