Here is a story of the discovery of America’s northern rivers and mountains in all their awesome power. The High Missouri rolls as a true saga of adventure and a spiritual quest. They came from civilization to wilderness, from the way of the Cross to the Path of the Sacred Pipe, from the wisdom of Europe to the experience of raw, dangerous, exhilarating life in the American wilderness. Among them was an innocent named Dylan Campbell. A would-be priest, Dylan signed up with Nor’West Company to bring God to the Indians. But as he traveled across the awesome plains of the West and up the mighty rivers hurtling down from the mountains, Dylan fell in with a mystical wanderer called the Druid. Dylan discovered worlds beyond all expectation. He saw frightening acts of violence and carnality, yet walked paths of beauty and enlightenment beyond all imagining. At Fort Augustus a beautiful woman taught Dylan about love and lust and betrayal. Among the fierce and bloody Piegan Indians a strange, white-bearded enemy taught him about fate. And, in his quest toward the legendary High Missouri River, Dylan learned what it meant to brawl and scratch and struggle not only for your life, but for your soul. Reviews “Rivers were the great highways into the West, and Win Blevins captures all their excitement.” —Howard Hawks, director of Red River “Win Blevins knows the mountain man years so well, he gives all his heart to doing what he loves to do best—tell a whale of a tale.” --John Cooke, author of South of the Border and On the Road with Janis Joplin “The mystical wanderer, the Druid, is an extraordinary character, and the most surprising. What a saga!”--Fred McCabe, Publisher, The Jackson Hole Guide “Early Win Blevins is just as good as Win Blevins today. Life in the mountains with the mountain men and those who explored first... Go along for the adventure!” –Gil Bateman, Co-founder of Wyndham Hill Records

About the Author I came naturally by my yen to wander far places, physical, imaginary, and spiritual... -"Win Blevins" Win Blevins, of Cherokee, Irish and Welsh descent, is from a family that was on the move, always west. Win's childhood was spent roaming, his dad a railroad man. Win went to school in St. Louis, and the family spent summers in little towns along the tracks of the railroads. He listened to the whistles blow at night and wanted to go wherever the trains went.Seldom has a young man been in more of a hurry. Using scholarships, Win ran through a succession of colleges, receiving his master's degree, with honors, in English from Columbia University. He taught at Purdue University and Franklin College, then received a fellowship to attend USC. Win became a newspaperman - a music, theater, and film critic for both major Los Angeles papers. In 1972 he took the big leap-he quit his job to write out his passions-exploring and learning wild places-full time. His greatest passion of all has been to set the stories of these places, their people and animals, colors and smells, into books.Win climbed mountains for ten years. A fluke blizzard caught him on a mountaintop and froze his feet, an end to climbing mountains, but not to exploring them. He's rafted rivers in the west, particularly the Snake and the San Juan, and was briefly a river guide. His love of the great Yellowstone River gave him a fine appreciation for the people who first loved these wild places. Along the way, Win lost the use of his legs and learned to sail, deciding a boat was a good place for a man without legs. He regained the use of his legs, and maintains his love of the open seas. His first book, "Give Your Heart to the Hawks", is still in print after thirty years. Other works include "Stone Song", a novel about Crazy Horse, for which he won the 1996 Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award and the 1996 Spur Award. He's written 15 books, including a Dictionary of the American West, numerous screenplays and magazine articles. He lives quietly in the canyon country of Utah. His passions grow with time-his wife Meredith, the center of his life, their five kids and grandkids. Classical music, baseball, roaming red rock mesas in the astonishing countryside, playing music He considers himself blessed to be one of the people creating new stories about the west, and is proud to call himself a member of the world's oldest profession-storyteller.

1941 Germany. Sophia Ericksson, a rising young soprano from neutral Sweden, is swept up into a wartime intrigue to match the most intricate plot of any opera in which she’d sung in her career. At an engagement with the Berlin Opera, she is applauded by society cognoscenti and desired by more than one of the Nazi superiors in attendance. Surviving a brutal attack and then suddenly caught in a power play between the highest ranks in the Third Reich, she faces romantic adventure and heart-stopping tension to return home and save the man she loves from the increasingly desperate Nazi war-machine.

The main male characters are in By Debbie The book is well-written and well-edited. The story does keep one interested and moving ahead. I had however some problems with the characters. The main character Sophia seems quite self-centered and a bit clueless about the catastrophic events happening around her. She's therefore a bit of a victim and not as sympathetic to me as I think the author would like. The main male characters are in some cases well-known historical figures, Nazis, and it takes a bit of work to see them as even a little bit sympathetic, yet that is what the author's intent seems to be. It's too much of a stretch. Some of the fictional German characters seem a bit more believable and likable, although I, for one, am weary of the, "I couldn't help it. I was forced." defense. Or the really old, " I was just following orders." The convoluted plot was interesting, if a bit far-fetched. The author clearly researched her time period well, and I detected no factual errors, although the book seems much more modern in tone than the 1940's.

Historical with romantic elements - good read By Car B If you are a fan of historicals with romantic elements, and especially those set during WWII, North Star is for you. The reader follows the heroine as she struggles to survive the many horrors of war and jts merciless Nazis. Brimming with detail, the story takes us into the clutches of the Nazis along with Sophia the protagonist, a talented and spirited performing artist who attracts the attention of high-ranking officials and several other "bad actors" (including one we suspect is not THAT bad.) North Star is a great escape and an adventure.

Easier read than I thought it would be By Pamela Broecking well written, and well researched. It starts off feeling a little far-fetched, but it's easy to believe that something like this could have, and may have, actually happened.Really great read if you can get past the Herr this and Frau that. The story flowed easily, even though there were a few really uncomfortable moments. And of course, there IS a happy ending, of sorts.

Maribel Wolfe has never forgotten the vampire she caught watching her sleep on the night of her sixteenth birthday, nor has she forgotten his kiss. But as the years pass and he doesn't return, she fears she will never see those enigmatic red eyes again. Until she discovers a spell that can bring him straight to her bedroom, that is. Cairo is a soulless vampire who keeps to himself, roaming the wastelands and wandering the shadows of the Other Side, hunting down the vile creatures that murdered his family and fed on his soul. He has zero patience for the little witch who has the audacity to summon him to her bed, and he has half a mind to teach her a lesson about what happens when you aren't careful what you wish for.

By Amazon Customer I loathe books about witches and I don't usually care for vampires much either but I received a free copy of this book and liked the blurb enough to open it up. I am so glad I did!I read 250+ books a year and most of those are urban fantasy or romance and honestly after about 150 books so far this year, I have been getting to the stage where I am saying to myself - "this is boring, I need to get myself another hobby". I read series I love but the bulk of my reading is from trying new ebooks in the search for new favourites. This year I have discovered precious few that I would rush out and buy the next of, maybe 10 or less so far but this series will be an autobuy for sure. It is a perfect hot paranormal romance and very compelling. I read it till 4a.m one weekend day and night. The world building is fantastic, pace perfect and characterisations are good. It is emotional and evocative and stronglyerotic. Kresley Cole (world building and sexiness) and Kelley Armstrong (pacing, characterisation and emotional depth) are the comparators that spring to mind. If you enjoy a good erotic paranormal romance a little on the dark side, this is for you!

I have read all the books that are published of this chronicle so far and these characters are in a league of their own. This story is very addictive, the authors descriptions are so vivid I felt like I was in their world. That's when you know a writers is truly gifted. The author has created the best vampire portrayal I have encountered. Maribel is a on the brink of womanhood and she just cant get a certain dark dangerous vampire out of her head. So she does what most young girls do, dive head first into something she has no idea about. And wow does she go through some things because of that decision. Cairo is a big, dark, fierce warrior with a lost soul. All he knows is emptiness all he sees is the satisfaction in his hunt for vengeance. Until he is forced to revisit something from his past. No spoilers but, I'll say this... be prepared to be BLOWN away. This a must have for all those who love supernatural/ human entanglements. Buy it you will not regret it this book is not just dark erotica nor is it a simple story of supernatural, its a story about the intensity of passion how far we are willing to go to feel it. Passion can fill many needs and in many ways, for each character the other supplies a need and they get to a point where they must have it no matter the consequences. There is an array of secondary characters with stories of there own that make for a full experience of this awesome world she has created. I'm a huge fan of Soraya and I previously followed her on wattpad and I had to come over to Amazon to congratulate her and to share my review. If I was you, I would purchase the whole series. Well worth the money. This story stayed with me a long time after I read it ...I still think about it often. Thank You Soraya not just for a book but for a true experience.MEDASLOVE

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A sexy book that you should take seriously By Yena Purmasir To Summon a Vampire might seem at first glance like an easy read, something to do when you don't want to think, but this is one of the most gripping and difficult novels I've ever read. There is a lot of pain in this novel, a lot of grief, and a lot of love. Maribel and Cairo are not likable characters by any means, and yet, at the end, you can't help but feel a deep sympathy for both of them. Even the second romantic arc, following Dana and Lawrence's story, is tough and unyielding. Soraya Cage writes sexy books, yes - but she also writes really thoughtful books. I reread certain chapters over and over again, because they were so well-written, so intensely emotional. The scariest thing about Soraya's vampires and witches is that they are so terribly human and subsequently, entirely responsible for their devastation. This book is for anyone who has ever been unhinged by love.

The Powterosian peninsula is in retreat everywhere. Chaos reigns as Dreadsdrac’s armies roll over the unprepared kingdoms. What has been impregnable is undermined. One of Neuyokkasin’s greatest allies is engulfed in the mayhem and topples. Another loses territory at an alarming rate. Unable to think of offense, it withdraws into a defensive mode, sensing little hope of survival. There appears to be no hope of thwarting the Dreaddrac advance. King Saxthor is exhausted trying to counter the enemy everywhere. Neuyokkasin’s resources are dwindling. There seems to be no other resources necessary to stem the dark, unrelenting tide. The king’s plea for assistance to Emperor Engwan IV of the Powterosian Empire goes unanswered. Saxthor stands alone as Queen Dagmar has disappeared as well. What hope is there? What else could possibly make things worse? Things can always get worse as Saxthor soon finds out. The whole Powterosian world is about to explode into a far greater conflagration. Sometimes, the loyalty of friends is all you have to hold onto. Honor, integrity, and loyalty disintegrate overwhelmed by loss of confidence, greed, and treachery. How can it end well? The Dragon Ring and the Crown of Yensupov now take on urgent significance in this desperate war for control of the Powterosian world. Dragons, wizards, elves, dwarves, witches, orcs, and other fantastic creatures spiral through this epic story of life with a twist. Great fantasy is credible, and it shows real life issues woven with delicious manifestations and personifications. Time to gobble up this epic if you haven’t started it before now.

The Powterosian War (Neuyokkasinian Arc of Empire Series Book 5), by C. Craig Coleman

Review From Readers Favorite:Reviewed by Eduardo Aduna for Readers' Favorite War is in full swing in Powteros, and Saxthor and his allies struggle to defend their kingdoms against the might of the Dread Lord. Death and destruction strike commoner and nobles alike and the entire world will never be the same after the Powterosian War. The fantasy genre is full of authors that have become successful by catering to the preconceived notions of readers, by taking oft-used tropes and themes and simply using these to give readers a sense of familiarity and comfort as they go about another run-of-the-mill fantasy adventure. But the truly magnificent authors, writers like Melville, Erikson, Cook, and Martin eventually break free of these common tropes and themes and, instead of just using them, they push the genre's limits, testing, challenging and daring readers to come along for the ride. This is exactly what C. Craig Coleman has done in The Powterosian War, the fifth book of the Neuyokkasinian Arc of Empire Series. He dares you to stand beside Saxthor against insurmountable odds. He tests your limits, your emotional resolve as each twist and turn hits like a physical blow. He challenges you to think two and three steps ahead, to look at each character in each scenario and think about the possible future. This is epic fantasy writing at its best. What started out as an ambitious project from a novice author has turned into an epic that weaves emotion and thought alike and draws the reader in with a superb plot and a solid narrative. I can unflinchingly say that I want more. More sleepless nights, occasionally exclaiming out loud as I immerse myself in this world. More of the twists and turns that at times make me marvel at the author's bravado, all while wanting to choke him to death. This is the best work by C. Craig Coleman. So far.

I am a non-fiction, history and economics oriented reader with little patience for made up stuff. However, C. Craig Coleman's six-volume Neuyokakasinian Arc of Empire Series has aroused my imagination and piqued my interest. Why? Because I know the series is really an intricate biography, albeit one cloaked in the guise of a political drama set in a pre-industrial, wondrous and mythical time and land called Powteros. The first four volumes of the series explore the lives of Saxthor, born into the royal line of Calimon, rulers of the Powterosian nation of Neuyokkasin, and his closest friends and family. Saxthor's ascent to the throne of Neuyokkasin is a harrowing and delightfully mind-boggling four-volume character-exposing journey unto itself. Now, in book five, Coleman shifts the pattern to unveil a mature Saxthor, deeply in love and embracing his ruling destiny, but beset by jealous enemies and evil forces intent on usurping his young kingship. Armies launched by the dark-minded king of the far northern Dreaddrac kingdom overrun the Powteros Peninsula, deposing sovereigns, raining terror throughout the land. This is a heavy-marching and grisly tale of intrigue, stroke and counterstroke, menacing creatures, death, and suffering. It is a war story and what a war it is! If war is hell, then all hell is unleashed on the heroes of Neuyokkasin. Love must wait, life must wait, all energies, everyone's energies, must be directed toward outwitting the creature onslaught and saving the Powterosian Empire from enslavement and worse. This allegorical romp through young adulthood is everyman's struggle with a world intent on crushing him. Let me jump into book six right now!

By Fantasy Fan The fifth book in the Neuyokkasinian Arc of Empire Series opens with King Saxthor and his allies under assault on many fronts from the Dark Lord and his Dreaddrac Army and Navy. All of the existing creatures brought to bear against him in the previous books are here and also some new creations. Against overwhelming odds, the forces of good manage to hold on in some places but are driven out in others. At the point I thought they could not hold on much longer, Saxthor suffers painful personal losses and a terrible betrayal making it seem likely that all would be lost. Though privately having great doubts about his ability to prevail, Saxthor is decisive and exhibits a powerful resolve as he leads his army against a superior force. The burden of leadership bears heavily on his shoulders as he takes great personal risks in his effort to defeat this enemy. All of the books in this series have been action packed and unpredictable. This book explodes with action. With their backs against the wall, Saxthor, his Generals, Wizards, friends and allies use the most ingenious ideas to bluff and stymie the huge forces arrayed against him. For the first time Saxthor seems to understand the powers that he controls in the Ring and the Crown. I would never have thought that the carefree young Prince we met in the first book would develop into the military genius we see in The Powterosian War! Issues still remain however that threaten to undermine Saxthor’s happiness and the security of all he has accomplished. I certainly look forward to the next book, The Pinnacle of Empire!

What a bitter-sweet segment in Saxthor’s struggle to conquer evil across the peninsula. Mr. Coleman has shocked me with plot twists I never saw coming, but easily make sense in retrospect. The bravery displayed by his characters, even in the face of some of the most evil creatures and most desperate situations imaginable, is inspiring to his readers. As with the previous book, his military expertise and creativity never fail to amaze me.As Saxthor matures in his role of leadership, he faces both gains and losses of incredible magnitude. His trusting nature backfires on him, but his intuition and personal energy give him a confidence we haven’t seen before. I am especially impressed with the conquests of both Bodrin and Queen Dagmar in this novel. I also enjoyed the roles the wizards and dragons play. It truly is a fantastic story, and events really begin to tie together. Now, if I can only discover Saxthor’s fate! Thank you again for an inspiring and action-packed read! I can’t wait for the next book!

"A hard-charging opener to a promising, if bloody, space-opera series." —KIRKUS Centuries after Earth was rendered an uninhabitable wasteland, humanity was forced from its homeworld and founded the Kepler Circuit, a string of colonies throughout the solar system. These settlements provide resources to the remnants of humankind, the most important resource being the newly discovered element—Gravitum—found only in the Earth’s unstable mantle. But a powerful religious faction known as the New Earth Tribunal has risen to preside over most of the Circuit. Though there is barely a faction left to challenge them, a string of attacks on the Tribunal’s freighters causes them to suspect their mortal enemies, the Ceresians, of foul play. Tasked with solving the problem is Sage Volus: Tribunal Executor. Spy. Sage quickly infiltrates the ranks of a roguish, Ceresian mercenary named Talon Rayne, seeking to discover the truth behind the attacks, but the longer she works amidst Talon and his squad, the more she finds her faith in the Tribunal tested. While her quest for answers only unearths more questions, a new threat is on the rise, and it plans to bring down the Tribune once and for all.

It did not pull me in instantly. However, after reading the book and even just flipping through the first chapter I can say that the summary does not do the book justice. This was a wild ride of mercenaries, thieving and political sabotage. Add a dash of sexual tension and I was hooked. From the get-go I was launched into perilous action. I wasn’t even sure I was reading, it felt more like I was watching a movie as ADIM, the robotic assassin brought men to their knees. The story flew by with very little down time and I can definitely say I was never bored. Bruno does an amazing job at world building. Post-Earth is definitely incredibly different from anything we could imagine and his take on how humans would survive if Earth was no longer habitable was very creative and realistic. I loved how certain colonies are known for certain things like the mining colony where the blue death is always a threat or New Terrene, the capital city and home of the Tribune, the cult-like organization that currently rules The Circuit. His character creation was also really well done. All of his actors I felt were well rounded and defined. It was hard to hate the bad guys because even though they were all kind of crazy, there was also a lot of logic to what both sides were doing and I personally have yet to decide whose side I am on. The Tribune is a controlling, manipulative, horrible organization, but so is Cassius Vale and what he does in the name of justice and vengeance against the Tribune. Both are mad hatters and yet, both have reasons for what they do. You will be torn with who your loyalty lies with. The other leading actors being Sage and Talon, both loveable and fascinating in their own right. As a woman, I appreciate a strong female character who can take care of herself. Sage can do more than take care of herself as a trained assassin with her awesome metal/mechanical arm. I felt Bruno did a darn good job at her characterization. Her conflict between duty and faith and personal struggle was compelling to witness. I am excited to see what happens to her and how she changes in the books to follow. I think her character was one of the more mysterious and exciting to observe.Talon is the loveable, nice guy, AKA gentle giant –even though he is an experienced killer. His softness is what pulls you in. The contrast between hard Sage and soft Talon was a nice combination. My only complaint that I have is that I think the romance needed more development. I felt based on the female love interest’s past that it all happened a little too fast and there was not enough build-up and reasoning for why she would have the feelings she does. It all seemed to hinge more on sexual attraction than anything else, and I didn’t really buy it. However, I still loved both of the characters and felt that with more development they were an excellent pairing.

By Jona I will begin by first saying that Sci-Fi is not my genre of choice, although I am avid reader most other genres. However, stepping outside of my comfort zone has never proved so fruitful. Bruno proves to be an imaginative writer, carefully constructing a world for the reader to be immersed in. His attention to detail in regard to imagery does not go underappreciated with me as I felt that throughout the entire book, I was able to visualize every scene. Bruno leaves you racing to finish the book after coaxing you to invest yourself entirely in the story line.I was especially captivated with the character Sage; she is heroic, flawed, nuanced, and most importantly, relatable. Her character is in one of several plotlines that simultaneously play out in the novel, which flawlessly coalesce at the end. His commitment to character development is also clear in how intricately he establishes each character, avoiding archetypes that would bore the audience and result in a completely predictable plotline. Like a true master of the trilogy, there is enough resolution to satisfy your hunger for one but he also opens up new avenues for future exploration.Bruno has truly made an impact on me as a reader, opening up a whole new genre for me. I recommend this book to any established Sci-Fi consumer as well as any reader curious about a world beyond our own. It has been a perfect book to kick off my summer reading binge. I eagerly await the next book!

The Circuit: Executor Rising By Hope Haugstad *I received an ebook copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.*First Impression: Post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi is always intriguing.Characters: These are characters written by a man, which was evident as I read. Although not necessarily lacking in depth, they are all tough and seem to be missing an emotional element that makes up a human. Perhaps this was simply a product of their surroundings.World Building: I enjoyed the concept of Keepers, the Circuit, and solar arks. I wanted a bit more detail regarding Gravitum and what exactly happened to the Earth. Perhaps this could be extended in a series.Writing Style: Author Rhett Bruno can tell a story. Hard science fiction is a little tough for me to digest, but this felt more like a character story just happening in a Sci-Fi world by chance. I appreciated that although I didn’t have a lot of backstory, the author made it easy for the reader to just drop into his world. What I Enjoyed: The Circuit: Executor Rising is a good Sci-Fi debut. I’m curious to see where the author goes in upcoming works.Deal Benders: The main problem is in a world of genius world builders, this book just doesn’t measure up to the status quo. Not without potential, but ultimately a bit forgettable.Overall Rating: I give this one 3 stars because I liked it. Not a bad start!

The Last Stork Summer is an account of Hitler's "Germanization Program" and how one Polish child, Eva, survives the designation of “racially worthless". It gives readers an opportunity to look beyond the obvious terror and intimidation of a Nazi labor camp. Eva uses everything Hitler is trying to destroy – her memories; appreciation of God’s creation; Poland’s culture; her love of storks; and a protective friendship – to survive being a Polish, Catholic child at that moment in time.

Learning about the way in which Germany invaded Poland and what they intended for the children was another lessen in the evil of that regime. I loved the way Eva found hope through her relationships with Anna and Hardy. The amazing migration of the storks and how they live and breed was something I loved learning about along with the hope of freedom Eva felt when she thought about them. I think this is a great book for school age children and their parents to read. This puts you right in the middle of the misery and struggles of the children of poland during world war two. I look forward to finding out what happened to Eva and Anna in the next book.

An inspirational story of a young girl who survives Hitler's "Germanization Program" By cmac The Last Stork Summer is a beautifully written account of a young Polish girl facing the horrific brutality of the Nazi regime. Eva's survival in a labor camp is dependent on her ability to recall memories of her family, the beauty she finds in nature outside the prison walls, and the bond she forms with both a young child, Anna, and a sentry dog, Hardy. The annual return of the storks to Poland becomes a symbol of hope to Eva that both she and her homeland will survive the Nazi invasion.

“My last memory was of walking down a sandy road in an Italian village along with three other soldiers...” In George Giles’ mind, he is a twenty-seven year old soldier preparing to return home after Germany’s surrender during World War II. But his body tells a different story; he is the serial killer Peter Hunter, who until recently was detained at Broadamoor for the criminally insane. Unlike Hunter, George has never killed, nor does he know of the 21st Century. Faced with a London much changed from his memories, George seeks answers from the past and tries to uncover how he is connected to Hunter.

It follows a man named George, a man and soldier from 1945, who to all in the world believe he is actually a murderer name Peter in the year 2000. This book is about a mans journey to find out WHO he really is. To the world he is Peter, but to himself he is simply George. This book was awesome. It was definitely well written and was easy to get into. It is filled with mystery, history, and had a great story line. Sometimes a person will read a book and would love to see it in movie form. This book was one of those for me.It was really a GREAT read. And the ending was just WOW!!!...Stormi

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "Feel Good" Historical Novel By Kathleen Groom I enjoy historical fiction, especially when the story takes place close to home. Turquoise Summer hits the mark! Set in Grand Lake, Colorado, right after World War II, the story is filled with nostalgia as well as insight as to what it was like for mid-western Americans to readjust to normal life. So many subtle nods to a time gone by, including unaccompanied horseback rides around the lake and separate living quarters for the African-American maid, Alma (secretly my favorite character). I found the characters lovable and the story line delightful. I'm looking forward to a sequel.

Build, process and analyze large-scale graph data effectively with Spark

About This Book

  • Find solutions for every stage of data processing from loading and transforming graph data to
  • Improve the scalability of your graphs with a variety of real-world applications with complete Scala code.
  • A concise guide to processing large-scale networks with Apache Spark.

Who This Book Is For

This book is for data scientists and big data developers who want to learn the processing and analyzing graph datasets at scale. Basic programming experience with Scala is assumed. Basic knowledge of Spark is assumed.

What You Will Learn

  • Write, build and deploy Spark applications with the Scala Build Tool.
  • Build and analyze large-scale network datasets
  • Analyze and transform graphs using RDD and graph-specific operations
  • Implement new custom graph operations tailored to specific needs.
  • Develop iterative and efficient graph algorithms using message aggregation and Pregel abstraction
  • Extract subgraphs and use it to discover common clusters
  • Analyze graph data and solve various data science problems using real-world datasets.

In Detail

Apache Spark is the next standard of open-source cluster-computing engine for processing big data. Many practical computing problems concern large graphs, like the Web graph and various social networks. The scale of these graphs - in some cases billions of vertices, trillions of edges - poses challenges to their efficient processing. Apache Spark GraphX API combines the advantages of both data-parallel and graph-parallel systems by efficiently expressing graph computation within the Spark data-parallel framework.

This book will teach the user to do graphical programming in Apache Spark, apart from an explanation of the entire process of graphical data analysis. You will journey through the creation of graphs, its uses, its exploration and analysis and finally will also cover the conversion of graph elements into graph structures.

This book begins with an introduction of the Spark system, its libraries and the Scala Build Tool. Using a hands-on approach, this book will quickly teach you how to install and leverage Spark interactively on the command line and in a standalone Scala program. Then, it presents all the methods for building Spark graphs using illustrative network datasets. Next, it will walk you through the process of exploring, visualizing and analyzing different network characteristics. This book will also teach you how to transform raw datasets into a usable form. In addition, you will learn powerful operations that can be used to transform graph elements and graph structures. Furthermore, this book also teaches how to create custom graph operations that are tailored for specific needs with efficiency in mind. The later chapters of this book cover more advanced topics such as clustering graphs, implementing graph-parallel iterative algorithms and learning methods from graph data.

Style and approach

A step-by-step guide that will walk you through the key ideas and techniques for processing big graph data at scale, with practical examples that will ensure an overall understanding of the concepts of Spark.

By MSastry This book is easy to read with a promise to provide step by step procedures to learn Apache Spark Graph Processing. To the most extent, Mr. Rindra Ramamonjison fulfills the promise. There are several errors in the book as such reader gets confused and can not be followed through the text. For example, spark-1.4.1-bin-hadoop2.6.tgz does not have the directories: core, graphx, mllib, sql, and streaming in SPARKHOME. Also, in the directory data, there are no files such as people.csv and links.csv.Apart from the above superficial errors, the book met my expectation to learn Graph Processing.

By Adrian I've only recently discovered the Syncronicity War series and as such, was able to read all four books within a week. I actually had very low expectations in the first ten pages of the first novel, as I felt it was very choppy. However, as it built up steam, it became more fluid and the storyline became more complex, and convoluted, yet remained connected and plausible (for a military sci fi book, that is).Overall, it is an interesting series, and I am glad the author made a decision to resolve the war, instead of trying to flesh it out for an unknown number of books for revenue. One thing I feel the novel could have become even more. When I think about it, Mr Wehr has a pretty strong well connected plot. Authors like Neal Asher and Iain Banks would have turned his 300 page books into longer ones with more vivid and descriptive world building, descriptions, character development. It has the foundation to become one that other people compare sci fi to. There are flashes of this. For example, in the original timeline, the bio weapon transfers from an earth colony to earth via the innocent actions of a child who wants to take some lollies behind the adult's back and he accidentally coughs into the jar. This was well written and more of this more in depth writing could have made this a great book. Of course this is all a personal opinion and I fully recognize that my own tastes are not what everyone likes.

They were expertly written and I enjoy them totally. I reason I did not rate the 4th book with 5 stars is because I felt that the ending of book 4 left a lot of unanswered questions that were not addressed. Even though the author's comments were stated why they were not addressed, those questions should have been addressed at the end of 4th book. Questions related to the current and future plans of Shiloh and Kelly; the 7th mothership's escape; the result of the Insectoids; the status of certain IA's, etc, should have been made available to the reader at the end in book 4 in some basic detail.. I fully understand your right to reserve and to follow on with another different series, but if you do not have the answers for those questions, as you previous stated in book 3 & 4, a lot of readers are going to be disappointed.Great writing job on all four books! Look forward to reading some more of your works.

I particularly like the aspect of time travel as a part of military tactics and strategy. There is also a very realistic maturation of the tactical and strategic abilities of the characters as they gain experience. Additionally, the inclusion of interesting artificial intelligence characters is fun. A great series I highly recommend.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A perfect summer read By Hanne-col When I first learned about this novella I was excited to find out that the authors, Emily Ann Putzke and Emily Chapman, were publishing it. They had previously posted the story as a series on their blogs but I had missed it. This way I would have a chance to read it. Not only that but it takes place during one of my favorite time periods to read about- The Great Depression/1930s. (I blame American Girl and Kit Kittredge entirely.) I enjoyed the story immensely. I was quickly caught up into the lives of sisters Bess and Gi Rowland and wondering how their stories would turn out. Both girls learn over the course of the story, and while it is important to know that you still have fun in hard times it is also important to help each other out when things get rough. I felt very much invested in the characters and really would not mind finding out more of how their lives went (hint, hint).Vivid characters is something of a trademark that I have experienced with both authors’ writing from the smaller short stories/scenes they have posted on their respective blogs and "Ain’t We Got Fun" follows in that vein. You are running across the Kansas prairie with Bess or downing uncountable cups of coffee in New York City with Gi. Not only are the two narrators vivid but also the people they encounter and describe. You even have a rough idea of what the musician couple who play the V-instrument are like even though they never really have “on screen” time."Ain’t We Got Fun" is the perfect short historical fiction read for you to add to your summer reading list.

By Mary I loved this story! At first, I was a little worried that I wouldn’t like a story told entirely by letter, but it charmed me completely. I got that little rush of excitement at each letter, just like I was the one opening the letter from New York or Kansas. Gi and Bess were delightful; their natural, easy banter with each other leads you to think that Chapman and Putzke really are sisters! It didn’t take long before I was drawn completely into the Great Depression and the Rowland sisters’ accounts, all at once humorous, poignant, and always engaging. The romance element was very sweet, and the plot moved nicely. (I loved the references to Little Women/Anne of Green Gables.)I’d also like to add the book is a visual delight. Besides the beautiful cover, the inside is so detailed with lovely little accents. It suited the story so well. All together an innovative and highly enjoyable historical fiction!

The characters are delightful, but also interesting and well-developed. I genuinely enjoyed seeing where their paths took them and how they changed and grew into themselves over the course of the story. It is well-written and easy to follow, and I love the medium of letters between two sisters. Definitely worth the read!
