HIS SMARTER BROTHER Acknowledged by Sherlock Holmes himself as being gifted with even greater powers of observation than that famous consulting detective, Mycroft Holmes appears in only four stories in the Canon and remains an enigmatic figure. As Sherlock tells Watson, his brother is more than an agent of Her Majesty’s government—for all practical purposes, Mycroft is the government. His immense mind contains all of the details and calculations of the political, scientific, and economic agenda of the British Empire. Now, we learn of Mycroft's secrets through the eyes of his new secretary, Patterson Guthrie. Guthrie's upper-class education has not prepared him for the rough-and-tumble world of international politics, nor for his encounters with the beautiful and cunning Miss Gatspy—thief, spy, assassin—whatever the situation calls for. Mycroft is revealed to be a vigorous player at world politics and international skullduggery. Against the Brotherhood is full of attempted assassinations, secret spymasters, anarchist cabals, concealed identities, double- and triple-agents, burglary, and sabotage—all done in true Conan Doyle style! FROM THE PERSONAL JOURNAL OF PHILIP TYERS: M.H. has been about errands for the Bavarian treaty; he returned here in a country squire’s riding gear and the look of a man who had taken a nasty fall riding to hounds. Upon my examination of him, I discovered he was bleeding in the shoulder, whereupon he produced the weapon which had inflicted the injury—a small skinning knife with a thin, wicked blade. “Much more of this,” he told me, “and I’ll have to send for Sutton ahead of schedule.” During his absence from this flat, he has learned that there is likely to be an attempt to steal the treaty before it can be signed. No amount of coaxing on my part would persuade him to tell me more than this concerning his escapades. He hopes that G. will provide the information necessary to prevent such a theft, for it would be a disaster.

Armelle van Galen lived happily with her extended family in Malburgen, near Arnhem in the Netherlands. Almost a teenager in September 1939, when war broke out in Europe, Armelle felt safe and protected by her family, especially by her cousin Toon. Secure in her fathers words, "There is nothing to worry about," Armelle had no idea of the challenges and changes that lay ahead in 1940 and the years to follow.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A commendable first effort by this author By Melisma Armelle's War is a very readable story of a young girl's struggle to overcome the hardships endured in The Netherlands during the German occupation of World War II.Although at times it seems relentless in the account of shocking events, at just the right moment the author relieves the tension by taking us to another place. It is also the story of Armelle's family and friends in various locations as well as others she encounters, both friend and foe.The course of the tale takes Armelle from a naive pre-teen to a world-wise and mature 17 year old who has had to adapt to prevailing influences to survive while others do not. It is constructed around historical events and the fictional experiences of the characters are entirely believable in that context.I both cried and laughed and would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in stories of wartime in Europe, survival under extreme hardship and eventual triumph of spirit.

For Peter, it was just another day of waking up to his mother yelling from the small kitchen in the small house they shared. The image he saw in the bathroom mirror that morning would change everything. Follow Peter in this first book of his journeys. Written for Latin students who read at the intermediate-low to mid level, this fantasy of magic and intrigue is just over 4600 words in length and is based on a vocabulary of 330 unique Latin words (not including different inflections of the same word). The verbs are limited entirely to the 50 Most Important Verbs list developed by Latin teachers on the Latin Best Practices Listserv.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hic liber mihi placet. By Chris B. Latin teachers who have been influenced by modern language teaching methods, including Comprehensible Input and TPRS, have witnessed a number of beginner-level texts aimed at secondary school students produced in several languages. Latin has noticeably lacked such materials for some time. Dr. Robert Patrick's novella, "Itinera Petri: Flammae Ducant," and the recently published "Pluto: Fabula Amoris," by Rachel Ash and Miriam Patrick, have begun to fill this void for Latin and bring true extensive reading material into a Latin classroom.Patrick's prose is written for an intermediate-level Latin student. Students who have had exposure to basic Latin grammar can read this text with a degree of fluency. His sentences are clear and straightforward, and the plot will engage students right from the beginning. The characters, without giving any details away, are varied and interesting, and each one provides another twist to the story's development. Limiting the verbs to the 50 Most Important Verbs demonstrates how Latin's vocabulary can express many meanings in different contexts.Dr. Patrick's contributions to the Latin-teaching and Latin-speaking community have continually influenced instructional strategies and methodology. I have begun to incorporate many of his ideas into my own teaching, and have seen students' ability to understand the language increase. By delivering comprehensible messages to students in the target language, students are more vested in their learning. I hope to use this book in the future with my Latin 3 students, or at least, encourage them to take a copy of it from the class library and read it on their own for enjoyment. Maximas gratias Roberto ago.

By Amazon Customer This short book is a great example of how "Comprehensible Input" can use grammar forms such as indirect statements, subjunctives, and supines without them being an obstacle to student understanding. Students can understand the story without needing to parse every form and word (an advantage to the limited vocabulary) and get a feel for what "reading" as opposed to "translating" can feel like in Latin. There's lots of action to move the story along and I think my own students at the 3rd and 4th year level would enjoy the chance to try their skills as they read about Peter's quest of magic and monsters, family and flames.

If you are at least familiar with the idea of the subjunctive, gerund etc (you don't have to be perfect) you can actually enjoy this story. And the author intentionally uses various meanings of words like "ago" (with footnotes). It encourages reading with understanding. There is a vocabulary at the back. Please give us more volumes like this.

Why are the valued animals being skinned and left hanging to rot on the trees? Something atrocious is happening to the pets and livestock – why the brutality? The Elders ask Lucien to solve the mystery, just before a young girl is found dead. Another one is found slain and the villagers become nervous and anxious. Meanwhile, Grandmother deals with attackers and the likes of her enemy, Brother Elizar. When Lucien faces her advisories and discovers the demure killer, you won’t want to miss a single word... ***** L.G. Scorpion has no publications to date, but is a University of Nevada—Reno graduate. The major in both Education and Spanish, with a minor in Business helped L. G. in the writing of this novel, plus teaching High School for several years was an added bonus. L.G.’s favorite authors are Patterson and Grisham and Scorpion wants the readers to enjoy a similar good plot and feel the intensity of at-the-edge of your seat suspense. The inspiration for Forest Healers was a combination of the family ancestors and a fascination with the 1812 time period, just before the war.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great read By Amazon Customer ForestHealers is a novel for any adult. This artfully written masterpiece contains mysticism, mystery, intrigue, humor, history, and a dash of science and romance in a nicely-formed bundle that is not just an entertaining adventure but quizzes your mind and imagination as well.L.G. Scorpion has created images and characters so alive it is almost like watching a movie DVD. She takes you on a roller-coaster ride through ancient American Indian traditions as an entire village deals with animal and human death.A young shaman has the mystical abilities to do much, and this keeps the story moving at a fast, suspenseful pace. The death scenes and killer mentality is described well, so it’s not recommended for young readers.Forest Healers is fun and exciting to read. All of us readers can only hope that there will be many more books to come from this new author. Excellent Job!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Forest Healers by LG Scorpion. Sarah Book Publishing (May 5, 2015) 322 pages By Kimwa L. Walker The main decision Mayola must make: is to choose to save Lucien and the village or to deal with her stalker and Brother Elizer issues. LG Scorpion created the book Forest Healers that has many suspenseful happenings in a not so typical American Indian village. In addition, Mayola must battle an evil entity and ghost while Lucien tries to solve the murders. The subplots are tremendous and helped to put me permanently on the edge of my seat in suspenseful glee. The solving of the murders and the climax was genius! In my life I have tried to solve a mystery and it's frustrating when the answers seems so elusive. I could completely feel Lucien's frustration. In 1812 in a village there was no forensics or DNA lab, so Lucien had to wing it. LG Scorpion created this character in such a believable way.

But Stanley knows better. he can hear these ‘sick’, after all.And this is no plague; this is a curse. Gifted with the abilities of a Chime Child, seventeen-year-old Stanley Brigham simply wants peace in his life. His sight connects his world to the magical and supernatural, and they have long given him grief. He has only come to Ireland to introduce himself to his recently betrothed and return home. But his life is warped when the outbreak finds its way into his world. Stanley sees the dead return to life, their voices still coming through when no one else can hear them. Likewise, his ability catches the eye of Maggie MacNamura, a colorful Irish spiritualist who is keen on saving her home. After escaping back to England, Stanley finds himself drawn back into Ireland’s mess when Maggie approaches both him and his closest companion, Vincent Cammish. She knows of his ability, and proposes someone is behind the mass attack. And she wants them found. Armed with little save for a folklore book and Vincent’s company, Stanley ventures back to Dublin in search of the curse’s mastermind. His adventures drive him deep in Ireland’s old magical realm, leading everywhere from the seedy underground of Monto to the Druidic order that guards this world. Old magic, older politics, and dark creatures the British Isles have long forgotten. And perhaps with good reason. -

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Old Vintage in New Bottles By Joshua Grasso This is a remarkable book which I stumbled on quite by chance, but has convinced me this is an author of real talent. The story combines old world folklore, particularly the kind of Irish fairy tales popularized by W.B. Yeats, with the readability and excitement of modern fantasy, albeit with a considerable late Victorian twist. In many ways, the book reminds me of a literary dare: "do you dare me to write my own version of a tale Stevenson, or Poe, or Le Fanu never wrote, in language just as musical as theirs, but which will never sound like a museum piece?" The gauntlet thrown, the author almost--but not quite--mimics the tones and style of a 19th century novel, while careful to make it sound contemporary. The pace is as breathless as The Hound of the Baskervilles, yet offers us more character development and introspection than one would expect from such a novel. Indeed, the only real question is what kind of book to call it. There is no sub-genre of fantasy that truly captures its wonder and magic, yet to call it merely "fantasy" is surely to shortchange it. Perhaps it is a book best explored without any preconceptions (which is why I offer so little of the plot), other than the promise of surprise and enjoyment. If the goal of literature is to make dead words come to life, and for fiction to blur the boundaries between the mundane and make-believe, then Chimehour is a consummate work of art. I've read the first two chapters twice and enjoyed it even more the second time, finding new treasures--and hidden secrets--in every page. Though obviously young, the author is clearly an old soul who has a long career ahead of her (or perhaps behind her--maybe she's channeling the spirit of Anne Radcliffe?). Whatever her origin, this is a book that should make its mark in the world, or at least occupy a venerable position in your Kindle's library. I look forward to reading the entire book!

Review Games of Fate: "Radcliffe's take on Fates, history, the supernatural are all unique. I loved the mix of the three races, the constant worry about Rysa and her survival. And, of course, what girl hasn't wanted her very own Dragon? Especially this Dragon.." ★★★★★ Award-winning author Patti Larsen "This is a fast paced book that doesn't skimp on character development." ★★★★★ J. Kimmel-FreemanFlux of Skin:I can't say it enough. Kris Radcliffe has become a new favourite author of mine with this series. Once again she tells an amazing story of fates, shifters, enthrallers, and dragons that you just can not put down. I was sucked right in within the first chapters and sped read until the very last pages. ★★★★★ -- Kristine at The Schwartz Reviews

From the Author Q: Rysa Torres, the main character of the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series, has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). What inspired you to write such an unlikely heroine?A: I wrote GAMES OF FATE for my daughter, a real young woman with real ADHD. The FFSD universe may be Urban Fantasy/ Science Fiction, but Rysa's anxiety, her hyperactivity, and her fractured and flitting way of seeing the world are all true to life -- and not attributes of someone you'd expect to save the world.A girl with ADHD can be a hero, too. She may not start out plucky, and may have farther to go in her journey, but don't discount the passion and creativity of someone with ADHD. She can save the world, and in the FFSD universe, she does.Q: How did you decide to include American Sign Language in the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon universe?A: I have a limited understanding of ASL; a family member who is not deaf but is nonverbal uses ASL. It was because of this family member that I realized the nonverbal dragons could also use ASL as a way to communicate. Q: Which Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon titles are FREE when I subscribe to Kris Austen Radcliffe's newsletter?A: GAMES OF FATE (book 1), CONPULSIO (an FFSD novella), and BONDS (book 4.1). Paste the following URL into your browser: tinyurl.com/krisaustenradcliffeQ: How many books are in the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series, and what is their order?A: GAMES OF FATE, FLUX OF SKIN and FIFTH OF BLOOD (books 1-3) make up ACTIVATION: THE COMPLETE FIRST TRILOGY. These three novels are tightly tied together and each picks up on the heels of the previous book. It's best to read them in order.Together, the novellas BONDS, BROKEN and SILENT make up book 4. This miniseries introduces Daisy Pavlovich and Gavin Bower (Rysa's friend who appears briefly at the beginning of GAMES OF FATE) into the FFSD universe.ALL BUT HUMAN and MEN AND BEASTS (books 4 and 5) make up the REDEMPTION DUOLOGY, and like the novels of ACTIVATION, are tightly tied together; and again, it's best to read them in order.Readers may start with either Rysa's story (GAMES OF FATE) or Daisy's story (BONDS). It is best, though, to be caught up with both heroines before starting book 5, ALL BUT HUMAN, where Rysa's and Daisy's paths converge. Also part of the FFSD series: CONPULSIO (a Roman Era novella), plus the short stories "Pop Rocks", "Cinder to Dust", and "Dmitri and the Mad Monk".The series, in order:(1) Games of Fate(2) Flux of Skin(3) Fifth of Blood(plus Conpulsio, Pop Rocks, and Cinder to Dust)(4.1) Bonds(4.2) Broken(4.3) Silent(5) All But Human(6) Men and Beasts(7) The Burning World (coming soon)Box sets:(1) Activation (2) Bonds Broken & Silent(3) Redemption (coming soon)Q:What genre is the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon series?A: FFSD is a New Adult Urban Fantasy Romance story within a Science Fiction universe. Dragons, Fates, Shifters, ghouls called Burners, immortal warriors, Roman emperors--they're all here, along with a smattering of nanobots and, well, new tech.

By Kristine An urban fantasy in the spirit of The Dragonriders of Pern that will keep you at the edge of your seat the entire series!Games of FateI just finished reading this book and I can tell you that it will be highly recommended from me. This is an author to keep your eye on. The power of her words will take you on an amazing adventure of fates, shifters, and burners with some tasteful romance to keep you glued to the pages. I could not put this book down for the life of me and through it all I was cheering encouragement to Rysa and Ladon to defeat the evil and allow their emotions to fully develop. I was not disappointed in the least which is why I chose to rate this as a five star read.Rysa begins her journey without any knowledge of who she truly is and the power she can potentially hold. She meets Ladon and his dragon in a time of need and the three of them fight against all odds to beat back the evil that holds Rysa and threatens to destroy them all. The book played easily with my emotions making me angry at any character fighting against them, happy when they finally accepted to fight together as one, and ALMOST...ok, it brought me to tears when Rysa's mother spoke her riddles of forgiveness. It made me laugh when Rysa ponders what she wishes her future could be, her white picket fence and Ladon and Dragon by her side for always. As I turned the last pages I was holding my breath through fear and worry for the characters that I fell in love with throughout the pages. This book held me captive until I flipped the last page.Amazing work Radcliffe, you have stolen a place among my favourite authors.Flux of SkinI have excitedly rated this novel with FIVE STARS! Trust me, it earned every single one of them.I can't say it enough. Kris Radcliffe has become a new favourite author of mine with this series. Once again she tells an amazing story of fates, shifters, enthrallers, and dragons that you just can not put down. I was sucked right in within the first chapters and sped read until the very last pages.Rysa, a girl like any of us, gets sucked into an extremely wild world full of the supernaturals we come to love in this series. Just when you think that her and Ladon will have the peace they deserve, the love that is so strong between the two, your thrown into an adventure just as captivating as within book one. Their love story is strong within this book, several steamy moments. And the excitement and action is high as Derek is enthralled and kidnapped and leaves the others with unanswered questions and the goal of finding him.Rysa is forced to find her own balance as her Fate and Shifter fight for a place within her crowded mind. Leaving her ill and vulnerable. Radcliffe has the amazing ability to suck you into her novel and you just have to flip the pages quickly to find out how it all ends.Fifth of Blood “And she’d been right about everyone wanting a piece of her.” Kris Austen Radcliffe has done it again, another FIVE STAR review for her third novel in a trilogy that I am now such a huge fan of. These books are worth a read. The world she paints is incredibly detailed, easily imagined, and simple to follow. The characters are extremely well built, I swear she must have charts or something because her characters, all of them, grabbed my every attention and I fell in love with them all the moment the series began. Fifth of Blood is no different. The friction in the beginning of this novel pulls at the reader. Pulls the reader deep into the world that Radcliffe has painted. Rysa and Ladon, the perfect romance between the two begin the novel apart. Your heart aches for them. You keep reading quickly, unable to put the book down, to get to the part where the two lovers get back into each other’s arms again. It captures your attention fully and completely, as you turn through the pages holding on to Radcliffe’s every word in hopes that the next chapter brings the two lovers closer. Rysa has lost her talisman. Without it, she has lost control of all of her abilities and while apologies for mistakes made in the previous novels are made, Rysa is rightfully angry at the whole situation. She needs her talisman, her man, and her dragon. Just as they start to get close chaos rises and makes everything for them so much more difficult. Truly, nothing is ever that easy, everything has its own problems and the question is, can they rise above? Can they find her talisman before it’s too late? Will Ladon watch another lover perish?“’Rysa!’ Ladon roared Everything remaining, ever single pin and staple of humanity that held together his mind, snapped.” It took me a quick three, okay maybe four, days to read this novel. However, the closer I got to the end, the faster I read and the later I would stay up reading. I mean, I finished this novel last night after drinking TWO coffees just to stay awake long enough to finish the novel. Oh boy, was it worth it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a brilliant series to get into By Jonel What happens when mythology becomes reality? What happens when the Roman Legionis make their way into our every day? What happens when your life and your love are on the line? The simple answer is a novel that will quite literally knock your socks off.Radcliffe’s descriptions are intricately crafted and flow seamlessly through the action of the story. She uses words to create a vivid masterpiece that her readers can walk through right alongside her characters. I appreciate how Radcliffe doesn’t ‘dumb down’ her writing in an attempt to reach a larger audience. She isn’t afraid to use large and/or uncommon words. In all honesty, she uses them to great effect, packing a punch. She also uses formatting to her benefit. Shortened paragraphs here, or an italicised word there draws attention to and highlights certain aspects of scenes for the reader, without them consciously noticing. She has also created an extremely well developed world that is backed by a solid and well formulated mythological basis. I love how personified the Dragons are, unlike so many other stories where dragons are simply beats. It makes them easy to identify with and relate too, while allowing the reader to see things from their POV. It also allows the reader to fully immerse themselves into this phenomenal world.Character growth in these novels is astounding. Although we’ve met most of the characters in the first novel in the set, many change in leaps and bounds throughout. That said, there is a cause for every change. Nobody ever has an unexplained personality change. Character development, although tied directly to the plot, is phenomenal and you really get to know them throughout this novel. It was really nice to see a cast of characters that didn’t remain stagnant. The new characters introduced are also quite well developed and help to round out the cast as well as further the story. As a master storyteller Radcliffe merges myth with reality, history with the present, romance with action into a story that one cannot help but love. This series was an emotionally intense and a wild ride. It brought tears to my eyes but also left me laughing. It is definitely a must read series.

We have more than one story in this here boxset and it begins with Rysa activating and learning new things about herself. It may feel a little scatter brained on some parts but thats what makes it genuine. Having a heroine with ADHD you'd find it difficult to read right? Imagine writing it! Kris did a good job with writing the frustrations and knowledge of Rysa having to deal with this her entire life. Now add in that she is a Fate and you have a good challenge. Theres is so much to learn and understand and i feel like taking it slow with this book is best. Dont get me wrong, its not difficult to enjoy, but taking it slow helps you absorb the complexities written. In Flux of Skin we have some new players seeking Rysa out for themselves. So among trying to control her newfound powers she must also focus on who she can trust. Kris brings in some new faces and give others more showtime drawing you into a world beautifully created. In Fifth of Blood we pick up where we left off in book two. Seperated from her loves and talisman, Rysa now has to deal with her out of control abilities that are making her ill. Ladon human and Ladon dragon will do anything to save her but will they be in time or will Ladon watch the woman he loves perish? The action and excitement continues here and keeps you invested in a story that keeps giving.**Book was receieved for free by the author in return for an honest review**

Not only Tchaikovsky's music and highlights are beautifully chosen and gracefully used within the story, but the voice of the actress telling the story (in French) is perfect. Soft, calming, perfect diction, and good intonations. My daughter (4) loves it and hears the story in a loop again and again. She also wanted to start dancing because of that story and after seeing the ballet (I showed her some excerpts on youtube). Had to register her to dance courses. I don't mind, as this will develop her muscles, a good maintain, grace and rigor at the same time. All good things!

Golden Scroll Finalist 2015 Novel of the Year, Awards presented July 2015 Ambush Road on Mount Tantalus is a mystical place hiding secrets that destroy lives. In the summer of 1965, fourteen-year-old Didi Nakaoka’s life changes forever when she moves to the rainforest in the middle of Honolulu. Shadows of the past reach into the present shattering her childhood, and shoving her into realities she’s emotionally unprepared for. As she and her two best friends, Benny and Milo, explore the rainforest along with urban legends like the lady with no face and menehune marches, superstition merges with reality. Didi discovers she cannot hide from the ugly truths and consequences of evil and hate. Didi’s first love, Benny, is a shy, awkward, handsome sixteen-year-old. His superstar athlete older brother and their dad, bully him. Unable to deal with life, his agoraphobic mom lives in a tool shed. Didi admires sixteen-year-old Milo who lives up the street. The sexy, beautiful, and bold free spirit appears unafraid of crossing moral and legal lines. Until crossing the line leads all three of them to a dangerous point of no return. Amidst a backdrop of multi-ethnic superstition, Didi faces dark truths at a time when revolt simmered among an entire generation of young adults who wanted to find themselves and their own truth. Didi wonders if she can emotionally survive the world she has been cruelly thrust into.

Ambush Road (Volume 1), by C. W. Schutter

About the Author I’m an author and screenwriter born and raised in Hawaii— third generation on both my Japanese mother's and my Korean father's side. Although I now live in the mountains of Colorado, Hawaii will always be in my heart. My first book, “The Ohana,” (family in Hawaiian) was a trip through three generations of immigrants to Hawaii—the Japanese, the Koreans and the Irish via Boston. The Ambush Road series takes place from the mid sixties to the early seventies, a time when I was coming of age. Hawaii has a rich history of immigrants, mostly from the Asia. Even the Native Hawaiians were immigrants who canoed their way from greater Polynesia. Every group brought their own superstitions and religious beliefs. Ambush Road takes place amidst the ghost stories of Hawaii and the mores and folkways of that era. Many of the stories in my novel are based on experiences anyone who grew up in Hawaii will recognize—the menehune night marchers, the lady with no face, Pele, the volcano goddess, and Mako, the shark god. I hope you enjoy this rare glimpse into Hawaii. Mahalo and Aloha, Carole Other books by CW Schutter- The Ohana, September Dawn, School of Shadows, Dragon Downs, Miracles Happen series

This book brings every element; action, mystery, love and the struggles of life. Also what’s exciting about this book is the setting, Hawaii, who doesn’t want to imagine a world of beautiful rainforest.Didi is the main character and is going through the biggest struggle young people go through, which makes her so easy to relate to. Even her two best friends are trying to manage their young lives, Benny (also her love interest) is being bullied at home and Milo, who is beautiful but has issues to work through. This is an amazing book; I really do love when you get so involved with the setting and characters you feel like it’s your life and that is what C.W Schutter brings to this novel.

It started so normal – about teenagers wanting to be popular, to be well liked and to fit in. Then it surges into secrets, hatred, abuse and ghosts! C. W.Schutter then skillfully threads the main elements of the Christian belief into the events against the beautiful background of Hawaii.Ambush Road crashes you into twists and turns that will shock you and make it difficult for you to put down this novel. This is a well-developed story filled with true emotions that cannot be ignored.

Montgomery Every novel I've ever read by this author reaches out and takes hold on my mind and will not let go until I read every word. And then, as is the case with Ambush Road, I have to go back and revisit the places and characters to see if I missed anything. Carole Sc\hutter builds suspense in this book through subtleties and details. Throughout the story there are foreshadows of the tragedy to come. I felt it, dreaded it, but couldn't look away. An excellent read.

As the novel opens, Olivier de Mazan is trying to evade the Inquisition and its secular thugs, while Count Raimond of Tolouse and French Queen Blanche of Castille are using the boudoir to pursue their own political aims. When French Crusaders attack Olivier's daughter’s castle, his grandsons, Odon and Rainier, set out for Montsegur, the Cathars' last refuge, which a French army is besieging. Rainier turns back, determined to prevent his family's capture, and runs into the son of Robin Hood, a soldier of fortune who takes Rainier under his wing. Odon goes on alone and meets the love of his life along the way. Both cousins are eventually reunited with their grandfather and their pretty cousin Miranda, who’s attracted to Robin. The prospects of outlasting the siege grow dim, and the Cathars make plans to spirit their treasure, including some priceless scrolls off of the mountain to safety. Their only hope of not being burned alive is for Count Raimond to come to their rescue and lift the siege, but he is embroiled in protecting his dynasty from extinction. The Fiery Furnace is the second novel of the trilogy Ordeal by Fire.

The Fiery Furnace (Ordeal by Fire) (Volume 2), by F. Scott Kimmich

About the Author What’s in a name? Scott’s dad, Jack Kimmich, worked his way through college and medical school. F stands for Ferdinand, the first name of the urologist who relieved Jack’s wife, Renée, of a painful kidney stone. Born in Provence, she grew up reciting the works of Frederick Mistral, who did so much to re-establish Occitan as a living language. She was also an avid reader of Sir Walter Scott, and added Scott to her baby’s name. “Scotty,” as she called him, passed on lore about the Albigensian Crusades to his own children, who badgered him, “when are you going to write the book, Dad?” Those little devils made him do it, not once, but twice! In French, the masculine version of Renée, is René, but in the thirteenth century, when people in the Midi all spoke Occitan (also called Provençal), they said Rainier, not René. Odon, who with his cousin Rainier is a major character in this book, bears the name of Scott’s uncle. Olivier, the patriarchal figure in the book, hailed from Mazan, a few kilometers from Renée’s hometown of Carpentras. Mazin, a French version of Mazan, is the family name of some of Scott’s distant cousins.

It is all of that: a model, which may easily become a classic example, of what to put in and what to leave out in the writing of a historical novel. ... I do not believe it is saying too much to suggest that in the person of Mr. Fast we may have the next really important American historical novelist". -- Joseph Henry Jackson, New York Herald Tribune Books"Fast's writing, austerely polished and austerely poetic, is admirably suited to this epic tale of a desperate effort for dignified survival. ... Fast has gotten to the core of this incident and made it into a rich American novel". -- New York Times Book Review"An amazing restoration and reconstruction. Thecharacters breathe, the landscape is solid ground and sky, and the story runs flexibly along the zigzag trail of a people driven by a deep instinct to their ancient home. I do not know any other episode in Western history that has been so truly and subtly perpetuated as this one. A great story lost has been found again, and as here told promises to live for generations". -- Carl Van Doren

The Last Frontier (North Castle Books), by Howard Fast

From the Back Cover Originally published in 1941, The Last Frontier is the story of the Cheyenne Indians in the 1870s, and their bitter struggle to flee from the Indian Territory in Oklahoma back to their home in Wyoming and Montana. Some 300 Indians, led by Little Wolf, fought against General Crook and 10,000 troops, with only 60 finally making it through to freedom. Fast extensively researched this book in the late 1930s, visiting and speaking with Cheyenne experts in Norman, Oklahoma. This was the first of Fast's many books to gain a wide popular audience; it was eventually made by John Ford into the classic film Cheyenne Autumn (1964).

About the Author Howard Fast (1914 2003) was one of the most prolific American writers of the twentieth century. He was a bestselling author of more than eighty works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenplays. The son of immigrants, Fast grew up in New York City and published his first novel upon finishing high school in 1933. In 1950, his refusal to provide the United States Congress with a list of possible Communist associates earned him a three-month prison sentence. During his incarceration, Fast wrote one of his best-known novels, "Spartacus" (1951). Throughout his long career, Fast matched his commitment to championing social justice in his writing with a deft, lively storytelling style.

Walker Blue "The Last Frontier" was Howard Fast's first bestseller, and rightfully belongs on any short-list of best books. In some of the most beautiful and moving language used by any American writer, Fast tells the story of how 300 Cheyenne Indians -- starving on their Oklahoma reservation -- packed up in 1878 and started a 1,000-mile trek back to the happy hunting grounds of their beloved Wyoming. Hounded by the U.S. cavalry, outnumbered and outgunned, they fought their way north inch by bloody inch.Although "novelized," the characters and events Fast portrays are real. He reportedly conducted extensive research before the writing process began, and then crafted one of the most heartwrenching stories to come out of the American West.As a side note, the 1964 John Ford western "Cheyenne Autumn" was based on this book.Highly recommended reading, but be warned: this was not a pleasant chapter in American history, and the outcome of this story may be upsetting. But I hope so. It is good that we do not forget.

It tells the story of the 1878 Cheyenne Outbreak, in which 300 Cheyennes made a desperate escape from their reservation in Oklahoma and struck out for their ancestral home in the Powder River country. Their story captivated the nation still reeling from the aftermath of the Custer disaster and the Nez Perce flight for freedom. Thousands of Army troops pursued the band, which had no more than 80 able-bodied warriors.About half the Indians were run to ground and captured. They were taken to Fort Robinson, Nebraska, where their refusal to go back to Oklahoma resulted in an attempt to starve them into submission. When they attempted an escape in the dead of winter, only about 50 Indians survived the shootout that followed. The nation was outraged when they learned of the inhumanity shown to the Indians. As a result, the surviving Cheyenne were allowed to remain in the north and eventually they settled on a reservation in Montana. This is a passionately written account of a shabby and little-known incident. It is also extraordinarily depressing, which makes it a difficult read. In addition, Fast chose not to follow any particular protagonist, instead dropping us in to various scenes in a "you are there" style. While effective, it made the story lack the drive it would have had if we were following a particular set of characters.Reviewer: Elizabeth Clare, co-author of the historical novel "To the Ends of the Earth: The Last Journey of Lewis & Clark"

This book will go down in my top ten list. The book can stand alone on the strength of its story, a story about freedom and its value to a once proud Indian nation reduced to the poverty of a reservation. The Cheyenne refuse to give up their dignity in their quest to return to the land that has always been theirs by birthright, indeed, God-given. The reaction of the post Civil War government is painful to read, even more than a century later.Fast tells the tale at a fast pace. His chartacter development is strong and he elicits hate for some, empathy for others. The book is a real page-turner.In the final analysis, the book is about freedom, much like Fast's later work with Spartacus. As much as I enjoyed Spartacus, I say without reservation that The Last Frontier is a better book.

A Fatal Waltz (Lady Emily), by Tasha Alexander

From Publishers Weekly In Alexander's charming third novel of romantic suspense set in late Victorian England (after The Poisoned Season), Lady Emily Ashton is at a country house party when someone shoots her noxious host, Lord Basil Fortescue, with a dueling pistol. After the husband of a good friend is accused of the murder, Emily determines to find the real killer. The only clue, a threatening letter promising a political assassination, drives Emily to Vienna, where she meets the painter Gustav Klimt and shares stolen moments with her fiancé, diplomat Colin Hargreaves. But Emily never forgets her urgent mission—in the service of which she must match wits with double agents and anarchists as well as ally herself temporarily with Colin's former lover, the sexually sophisticated Kristiana von Lange. The appealing Emily at times comes across as too modern for even the most unconventional Victorian character, and the plot sags in mid-story despite several clever subplots. Still, the book's entertaining voice and accurate period detail will seduce most readers. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Lady Emily Ashton is back in her third episode of romantic suspense set in the Victorian world of mannerly gentlemen, conniving mothers, and scandals behind closed doors. Forced to join a group of socialites at the home of formidable and odious Lord Fortescue, whom she loathes (and whose daughter covets Emily’s fiancé, Colin Hargreaves), Emily and others in the party feel little regret when Fortescue is murdered. Unfortunately, her best friend’s husband, Robert, is arrested and imprisoned in the Tower, after witnesses confirm his fight with the victim. Resolved to exonerate Robert, Emily heads for Vienna on the killer’s trail. Austria proves rich with intrigue, and this portion of the story really shines as readers take a tour of nineteenth-century Vienna—its parties and its cafés—in the wintertime, shadowed by decidedly evil characters. Emily’s sparkling wit makes up for the somewhat convoluted plot and large cast of characters who move from England to the Continent and back at the slightest provocation. This is a captivating addition to the adventures of an irresistible Victorian iconoclast. --Jen Baker

Review "A wonderful choice for readers looking for a pleasant diversion from everyday troubles." ---Library Journal

43 of 47 people found the following review helpful. This complex mystery-by far the best in the series to date-seems to demand a long and detailed review By Lilly Flora I could not be more pleased that Tasha Alexander is the kind of prolific author who comes out with one book a year seeing as her Lady Emily mystery series is just soooo good that waiting any longer for the next installment would be simply intolerable. To answer the obvious question-yes that means this novel, the third in the series aptly titled "A Fatal Waltz" is just as good, if not better than its predecessors. And far more dangerous...We join Lady Emily Ashton for a shooting weekend at the hideously decorated country estate of Lord Fortescue, one of the most powerful men in England who has taken a great dislike to Emily because of her pursuit of the scholarly arts and her engagement to Colin Hargreaves, who often investigates matters for the Empire that demand a certain amount of discretion (in other words, he's a beautiful spy). The terrible man has decided to make the party hideously uncomfortable for Emily by pointing out one of the guests, a beautiful Austrian countess, was once involved with Colin in a way that no fiancé could be happy about. But Emily's distress over the Countess is put on hold when Fortescue is found murdered and out of all the people in the party it is Robert Brandon, Emily's best friends Ivy's husband, who is charged with the crime because of a rather public argument with his political mentor, Fortescue.Charged by Robert to find proof of a warning of a plot for the Lord's death sent from Vienna to the departed Lord shortly before his death Emily, Cecil Du Lac and Jeremy Sheffield Duke of Bainbridge head to Vienna to find out what they can to help Brandon, where they are shortly joined by Colin. But help is lacking from the Countess, who wants Colin back, and so Lady Emily soon finds herself dealing with anarchists and uncovering plots to send England to war with Austria and Germany-and all the while a man (also at the shooting party) stalks Emily through the snowy streets of Venice, reminding her with bullets in her rooms, pockets and purses that neither she nor Colin are safe in the course they peruse...As Emily delves deeper into the underworld of Viennese society and the complex word of political spying and manipulations she comes to realize what Colin's job really entails-and how dangerous-and invaluable- the work he does truly is. Can Emily, amateur as she is, find a way to exonerate Robert? Can she do so without putting herself or Coin in mortal danger? Can she unwind the mysterious web of suicides and ancient scandals which seem to have led to the Lord's death while trying to thwart a plot to plunge the world into war? And can she accomplish all of this while dodging Bainbridge's obviously growing feelings for her without losing his friendship?Well, if this Mary Elizabeth Braddon reading, Worth wearing, port drinking, crime solving lady of society can't do it then there is no hope for the world at all.Lady Emily is one of the most original, charming and fascinating characters I have come across in ages. Her narration is charming (for once I have no feelings at all that this book would be bettered by a change to third person) completely absorbing and will keep you with your nose buried in the pages of this book until you have reached the most satisfying end. I recommend this book as highly as I can. There's mystery, history, intrigue, danger, humor and a great deal of romance. Something for everyone.Five stars and more. I cannot wait for the next in the series and look forward to the changes that the fourth Lady Emily novel must encompass.

Roberts A FATAL WALTZ (Hist Mys/Amateur Sleuth-Emily, Lady Aston-England/Austria-Victorian) - G+Alexander, Tasha - 3rd in seriesWilliam Morrow, 2008, US Hardcover - ISBN: 9780061174223First Sentence: I had not noticed it when she first arrived: the way she leaned too far towards him as he kissed her hand, the hint of surprised recognition in his eyes. What begins as a tedious weekend in the country, for Emily, Lady Aston and her fiancé Colin Hargreaves, changes dramatically. The politically powerful Lord Fortescue is murdered and the husband of Emily's friend, Ivy, is accused of his murder. It is going to depend upon Emily, and a trip to Vienna, to set matters right.I enjoy this series, but this wasn't my favorite book of it. My feelings toward it are a series of contrasts. The characters are wonderful, if you've read the previous two books, but lacked character development, if you've not. I love Emily and Colin.I was disappointed there the delightful supporting characters from the previous books didn't have a bigger role. The inclusion of history and historical figures adds verisimilitude. It is always fascinating reading about the social mores of that time and the descriptions are wonderfully done.I think the biggest problem I had is the same I have with modern amateur sleuths; they just don't seem plausible to me in some of the things they get away with doing, although Ms. Alexander tries hard to make it work. The first book of this series, "And Only to Deceive," was so well done, I wonder whether this entry suffers a bit by comparison. Even so, I shall continue with the series.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Not Her Best By Barbarino I had been eagerly awaiting the publication of this book. I read both of Alexander's previous novels and enjoyed them very much, especially A Poisoned Season. This is the third murder mystery solved by Lady Ashton. She is the a young widow engaged to her dead husband's best friend. Her finance, Colin Hargreaves works for the government and appreciates Emily's bright and inquisitive mind. Emily is at a party at Lord Fortescue's estate when the nasty old politician is murdered and her best friend Ivy's husband Robert Brandon is arrested for the crime. Colin is sent on urgent national business and now it's up to Emily to solve the crime and free her dear friend's husband.Unfortunately I was very disappointed by A Fatal Waltz. I thought this novel was seriously lacking character development. It felt like this was the last chapter of another book rather than a solid work of fiction that would stand on it's own. I thought the mystery was lacking, it seemed almost silly to me. The relationship between Emily and Colin seemed flat and lacked realism. I thought some of the placement of things was a bit odd; a letter from Margaret placed right in the middle of the unfolding of a murder. And the whole idea that Emily would just call upon the hated evil anarchist in Vienna was just not that believable to me. The thread of unrequited love seemed a bit silly to me as well. Oh the poor soul is devastated and then healed with little transition from one to the other. This novel is not of the same quality as A Poisoned Season and I was rather disappointed. I will likely read the next adventure of Lady Ashton but I won't be chomping at the bit to buy it the moment it's published, I'll borrow it from the library and hope it's better than this installment.
