One of three long novella-length stories Sherwood Smith wrote extrapolating from the events of Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, “The Dancing Monkeys” features a bitter Henry Crawford wandering the world after his failure at winning Fanny Price. An unexpected encounter with an equally bitter Captain named Wentworth, during a sea battle with the French, brings about changes for both gentlemen . . .

McMurtry This was a very interesting short story that gave a generally different perspective on Henry's decisions and character than we see in Mansfield Park. The fact that it was plausible, factually detailed and realistic (in terms of setting), and engaging made it a great read. As a novella, or a kind of well-done fan fiction, it's hard to make into it's own story since Henry's relationship with Fanny goes nowhere. And that makes it interesting but ultimately a bit disappointing, for no fault of Smith's, because there is no redemption or happy ending for Henry, or at least not one which Smith felt able to develop into a stand-alone work. But Smith shows us the genuine potential Henry has for being a redeeming person and finding himself at some future date in quite as wonderful a love story as Fanny managed (and actually here suggests that Fanny might have been more genuinely happy with Henry than with her cousin Edmund who might have matched Fanny's ideal but listened and saw who she and treated her less than a true equal and partner than Henry might have, seeing her as his superior in many ways).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Austen Characters At Sea By PinkGirl Although never a lover of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park, I thought this was afine portrait of Henry Crawford and had the added advantages of having Fanny Price's young brother as a character also on Captain Wentworth's ship. I really likedthe way Henry was presented and the picture of life at sea in the Napoleanic era.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dancing Monkeys indeed! By Patty Edmisson This book is a very interesting read. It is a unique combination of Jane Austen's characters placed into the same story. They are from Mansfield Park and Persuasion. I have read other stories by Sherwood Smith and would encourage you to read them as well.

Young Jonathan Clyde causes mischief for everyone at Whitehall, the stately home of his privileged ancestors. As he matures, however, he comes to despise the vanity and conceit surrounding him. Misfortune requires Lydia Smythe, an exceptionally clever farmer’s daughter, to seek employment at Whitehall. As a parlor maid, she feels stifled and harried by those over her. Still, she refuses to relinquish her independent mind and spirit. From the moment Jonathan catches Lydia reading the books she is supposed to be dusting, he is intrigued by this unusual servant. Thus begins a clandestine relationship that is simultaneously amusing, confusing and enlightening. Just as it is evolving into something neither of them expected, an unforeseen truth comes to light, and the two wonder if their unconventional bond will be forever lost. Set in England in the mid-eighteen hundreds, A Girl Called Foote is the coming-of-age story of two similarly impressive people leading very different lives. "...writing that is clever and witty, with a polish that is unusual in self-published works. The characters inspire empathy, the romance feels pure and true, and the story itself is perfectly paced." --Portland Book Review, four out of five stars

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully written novel with fascinating characters; didn't want it to end! By J. Smeby As an educator, my reading "season" is during the summer. This season, I began with "Foote". Due in part with my fascination with the story, I was done in 5 days, and am now looking forward to either the sequel, the movie, or simply the next offering from this up and coming author, A.E. Walnofer. An engrossing tale of family, identity and love, it reminded me of both Titanic and Romeo and Juliet, but with a decidedly more human element. The story, more than anything, is a microcosm of life, where we begin figuring out who we are, enduring challenges, loss and suffering along the way, while ultimately discovering our true "self" in the end. Highly recommended reading--for summer, or any season . . . .

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Refreshing Read By Valorie McLaughlin This story captures the everyday life of a variety of characters in England centuries ago. The characters are memorable because they are cast in vivid scenes and more often than not, they are engaged in compelling conversations. The author's range of vocabulary, her persistent but gentle humor, her attention to sensory detail and her gift of entertainment all lend their support to a story well-told. Each character is understood at a deep level. I was smiling throughout the book; yet I found the scenes where the servant is dying of cancer to be so poignant, yet simple, that I could feel the pain in my own body. The novel pulses with the rhythm of life. Life goes on for all of us. This is a good summer read.

What a person is called affects their self-image and how others perceive them, and I thought this idea was explored with insight in this book from beginning to end. It was a surprisingly emotional topic for me. I loved the ending, too. And I loved how multiple viewpoints were shown throughout the book -- we readers were able to get into the heads of not just the main characters, but also more minor players like children, servants and foreigners. Every character's voice was explored and valued. I hope to read more books by this author in the future.

It requires a balance of facts with the need to tell a compelling story that catches a reader's attention much like any other novel. Usually what happens is that historical novels fall somewhere within the truth/entertainment continuum and will either get criticized for being too factual and boring or on the other hand it gets blasted for playing to fast and loose with historical facts. The stakes get higher if the historical novel takes on something that is particularly controversial or still in the news.Leon Uris' Haj is a perfect example. Take a look at all of the reviews from other readers. There are those who blast Uris for being pro-Israel. These people claim that the novel is historically inaccurate and hateful towards Arabs. (Most of these reviews are penned by people who refer to themselves as an Amazon.com customer and refuse to identify where they reside.I'll be the first to admit that this should not be the only book that you should read about the Middle East, but it should be one of the first. First off, eliminate the politics and read this for the great story. There are vivid characters in this book which begin with Haj Ibrahim and the countless others he encounters in his life. Along the way you get a lit bit of everything you would ever want in a novel including love, treachery, suspense and conflict. Along the way you also learn a great deal about the Middle East.Sure some of it is bound to be controversial but that's especially important in the post September 11 world we inhabit. This book is set in the late 1940's but how much has really changed. How many people have died and continue to die on a daily basis because of these religions that are yoked with every sort of prejudice known to man? There is no doubt that some of the positions espoused by some of the characters in this book will offend some people and brings smiles to others. Regardless of your political position, it will make you think. Given the importance of the topic, can there be a better endorsement?More importantly, once you get away from the big world political issues in the book, you will find that its an easy book to read. The 500+ pages fly by quickly and you soon find that the characters such as Haj Ibrahim, his sons, daughter and Israeli Counterpart Gideon Asch come to life. Here is where it is important to remember that the book is a work of fiction and a well-written book of fiction too. Finally, I would reject some of the criticism that has been leveled against this book's ending. I won't give it away but the ending is appropriate for the culture of the area and the story itself.Mr. Uris recently passed away so now is a good time to reflect on his accomplishments and revisit his work if you read it a few years ago. If you haven't read Uris in the past, now is the perfect time to get acquainted.

Bitter Medicine for the Arabs By Maximillian Ben Hanan "The Haj" by Leon Uris is an important book (in print or audio form) for understanding the negative aspects of Arab culture and little known aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict that the great majority of the media won't share with us. Specifically, "The Haj" is historical fiction about a Palestinian-Arab family before and after the 1948 War for Israeli independence (From about 1922 to sometime around the 1960's or 1970's).Leon Uris wrote this about the book (in the beginning of "The Haj"):"Many of the events in The Haj are a matter of history and public record. Many of the scenes were created around historical incidents and used as a backdrop for the purpose of fiction. There may be persons alive who took part in events similar to those described in the book. It is possible therefore, that some may be mistaken for characters in the novel. Let me emphasize that all of the characters in the Haj are the complete creation of the author, and entirely fictional. The exceptions, of course, are the recognizable public figures who were associated historically with this period, such as David Ben-Gurion, the Mufti of Jerusalem, Abdullah, Yigal Allon, and others."There is no question that this book is fiction regarding the details its' story tells, but the story itself is a real one. Arab refugees did stream out of Israel during the 1948 war and Arab leaders telling them to do so (there are taped broadcasts of these calls) was definitely one of the major causes of the plight of the Palestinian-Arab refugees. There was also very definitely a very active terrorist movement among the Arabs in the Middle East, which survives to the present day (witness groups like Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hizbollah, the PLO / Palestinian authority, and others). The Palestinian-Arabs continue to suffer under poor leadership that represses their rights (witness many human rights organizations' reports of extrajudicial killings by the Palestinian Authority, the same autocratic leader, Yassir Arafat, who refuses to transfer the reins of power, and other facts). It is also a well-documented fact that the Mufti of Jerusalem was an ally and guest of Hitler during WWII. These things are facts and are indisputable. "The Haj" tells a story using the device of historical fiction to relay the often-ugly facts of life for the regular "fellah" (sometimes translated as peasant) in the land the British called Palestine and is now known again as Israel. The book is well written (good grammar, punctuation, style, etc.) and the story flows. I enjoyed reading about the characters of the story, but often wanted to cry for them. Some of the most poignant moments of "The Haj" occur during the flight of the Haj's (the main character is Haj Ibrahim and the book is the story of him and his family) family during the 1948 war and in refugee camps in Jordan. It was very sad to see how members of the same culture (the Arab culture) and most of the time the same religion (Islam) can be so cruel to each other. This is still an endemic problem in the Arab world (witness how the Arab governments squabble among each other and often fight and kill one another). Some of the depictions of the relations between the largely city-dwelling Palestinian-Arabs and the nomadic Bedouin are among the saddest. There is still a strong hatred between these groups to the present day.Why read "The Haj?"Read "The Haj" because this is real information presented in a novel format that you can no longer get from most university classes about the Middle East. Read it to learn what AP and Reuters news services constantly gloss over in their writings used by newspapers around the world. Most of all, read "The Haj" to understand that one of the fundamental truths about problems in the Middle East is that the problems have less to do with Israel and Jews than cultural, political, and even religious problems and divisions in the Arab world. Israel is really a side issue at best (and excuse used by the Arab governments to cover their faults). Autocratic tyrannies (or gangster governments like Yassir Arafat's Palestinian Authority) are the true source of unhappiness in the Arab world. It's easy to understand that truth after reading "The Haj."You can get this same information from a pile full of academic texts (and I do recommend reading more research about the Middle East after reading "The Haj"), but this is the easiest and quickest way to introduce yourself to the bitter realities of politics in the Middle East.I highly recommend "The Haj."Review by: Maximillian Ben Hanan

Now is the time By Udi Now is the time to read 'The Haj'.This is a bit long so have patience...Now that more and more people are hearing daily on the news: 'Middle East Crisis', 'Israel', 'Palestinians', 'Suicide bombings', 'Terrorism', 'Fundamental Islamic groups', etc. this book can give a detailed "Big Picture" of the mess that is the Middle-East. It is not enough but a very good introduction.I am an Israeli Jew living in Jerusalem, but first and foremost dear reader, like you - I am a Human Being.Like others living in this country, I see (and feel) what others only see and hear on the news channels (which are always inclined to show what makes good rating). I try my best to understand what it feels like to be not only an Israeli Jew but also an Arab (especially Palestinian) and Moslem, as well as a Christian. While I agree the book is fiction, many details are fact. How do I know? If you lived and studied here for 33 years, if your grandparents were Holocaust victims, if your father fought in all the wars of Israel and if you yourself were a soldier at 18, serving in Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank and many of the places mentioned in the book, you too would have a pretty good Idea. It is too easy to judge from the comfort of your living room.Having said that, I have Palestinian friends and am fully aware of both their plight and Israel's partial blame for this. However, I have no doubt that the Arab leaders as well as the coruupt Palestinian Authority are 99% to be blamed. They have used (and continue using) the poor Palestinian refugees for their "Jihad" ("Holy War") on Israel and the Jews (p.s. What is so Holy about War?) They incite hatred in the media, on the streets and in mosques (creating a bad name for Islam) and they continue to justify brainwashing young boys and girls that they will become martyrs if they blow up Jewish children their own age! How can you reach heaven if you turn other people's lives into hell? How can anyone justify blowing yourself up along with innocent women, children, and elderly people (some of the victims in Netanya were Holocaust survivors)?!The Saudi leaders alone have Billions of dollars in Oil money. If they care so much then why are the Palestinians destitue? Because this is the way the Arab leaders want them - miserable and brainwashed, to be used against Israelis and Jews.Back to the book...In my opinion this is an excellent book and much of it is based on historical and cultural facts. I stress that there are also beautiful and gentle sides to Arab cultures (yes cultures, not just one culture), which are not depicted here.Israel is portayed very bad on the media. How many people realise Israel has a special relationship with the bedouins? How many remember Israeli aid workers in Gaza, Turkey and elsewhere after an earthquake? Israeli doctors and relief workers in Rwanda, India and just about everywhere else? How many see Arabs and Israelis working together in Hospitals, Universities and other institutions? Can an Israeli or a Jew or even an arab expect the same in any Arab or Moslem country?!As for Islam, I believe that like all faiths, it is a religion of peace, not war, hatred and prejudice. There is however a growing fear that those who would twist religion to their own ends, are going to bring about a catastrophe in the near future. 11th of September was a grim slap in the face showing the world that this fear is not fictional. We get that kind of a reminder daily in Israel. It is time for moderate Muslims to step up and condemn these acts in the name of their faith. Their voice is not heard loud enough. It is also time for Europeans to aknowledge their despicable recent past and stop acts of Antisemmitism as well as acts of hatred towards immigrants, especially Arabs. As a human being and a Jew I condemn this. Stop your biased policies for your short-term benefits and start taking responsibility towards the Jewish people as well as the Palestinian people. To conclude: An excellent read, biased towards the Israeli and Jewish view point but also showing a good understanding of the plight of the Palestinians and the complexities of the region.Udi

By Britt Buckenroth Kurt Dowdle draws us, once again, into the complex worlds of Kamp and Nyx, adding new adventures and horrors to keep the pages turning as well as new characters to hate and love. Dowdle sets a fast-paced thriller in the heart of 1800's Pennsylvania. His descriptions draw you in and his characters, again, are so well developed I found myself rooting for my favorites out loud. If you enjoyed Ax and Spade you will NOT be disappointed. Trumpet of the Dead left me spinning from the thrill and anxious for Kamp's...or Nyx's...or perhaps Angus' next adventure! Excellent read.

By Martha, CT In this highly satisfying sequel to Ax and Spade, Kurt Dowdle succeeds in crafting another compelling historical thriller. Joining Kamp, Nyx Bauer, and many other colorful figures from the first book is the Kid, whose quirky spirit and mysterious plight are at the center of the novel's action. Past and present merge throughout the story as the characters, and the readers, are forced to examine the shifting nature of identity. We continue to root for Kamp as Dowdle paints a more detailed picture of what makes him tick: childhood memories with his brothers, the war that continues to haunt him, his deep love for his wife and young daughter, and his seemingly inexhaustible need to protect and save the lost souls around him, even at great personal expense. The menacing cabal of industrialists that dominated Ax and Spade plays a less prominent role in Trumpet of the Dead, but still palpable is the undercurrent of tension between old and new, between morality and corruption, between the natural world and the technologically advanced society.Add to all of that Dowdle's subtle humor, evocative language, and apt historical references...let's just hope the third book comes out soon!

I love the strength of character of the women By Anne Marie In the first book of the trilogy titled Ax and Spade, there was tension between Kamp's yearning for a quiet life and his urge to bring justice and fairness to his world. This tension remains a central feature in Trumpet of the Dead. The complexity of Kamp's character and his conflicting emotions make him very real to me and very likable. The introduction of a new protagonist of uncertain name, referred to as "the kid", brought me out of my comfort level because of his eerie knowledge of things past. But at the same time his sense of humor gave a welcome lightness to his interaction with Kamp. I love the strength of character of the women: Shaw, Nyx, Emma and even Margaret. A great read. I am looking forward to the third book.

Robert Whittle, weaves the fasincating tale of Nancy Wilson, orphaned at the age of four. Without friends or family, Nancy is taken to an orphanage where she meets Dan Brown, an orphan eight years her senior. Together Dan and Nancy weather the difficult and lonely life wrought by their indifferent headmistress.Whittle's novel, the first of a pair, follows Dan and Nancy as they grow up and move out of the orphanage, leading separate lives. When chance brings the two together again, they choose each other as brother and sister, promising to never lose touch again. As the two experience tragedy and triumph, Whittle shares their tender love story filled with friends and "adopted" family.Bound by Loyalty is set in Victoria, British Columbia in the early 1900s. Throughout the book, Whittle sprinkles tidbits of Victorian history along with a smattering of the tumultuous political times the characters endured. From the growing popularity of the automobile to the first hints of prohibition, the author presents interesting historical and geographical facts in the midst of his charming and likable characters. Along with this rich history, Whittle paints a heartwarming picture of Dan and Nancy as they grow into adults. While this book could be characterized as a romance, it contains more history and depth than any Danielle Steele novel, and is guaranteed to appeal to a wider audience. Whittle's tale is well written, his characters are compelling, and the story flows easily from one scene to the next, making it difficult to put down. For readers who want variety, Bound by Loyalty offers a refreshing and enlightening change of pace.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. First rate read! By Helen Edwards Author J. Robert Whittle has another winner with this, the first in a new series set in Victoria, BC. He skillfully weaves real people, real events, and real places into a fictional account of an orphan girl and those she meets. As a Victoria resident, I can appreciate the depth of research that the author has undertaken in order to present an accurate picture of early Victoria. His portrayal of prominent Victoria citizens capture their personalities to a tee - their descendants almost think that the author had met the people in question. It is refreshing to read a novel that is free of sex, violence and mayhem. The story and its telling keep the reader entranced! This is a real page turner - and then you have to wait for the next one!One of the finest books I have read!

He very graciously autographed my books. I truly enjoyed reading this series and have since donated my copies to our local Library so that others could share in my enjoyment. It was well written and I finished the series in less than a week. I also learned a bit of history about the area which I feel makes the story and characters come alive. I would recommend this series to all my friends!

Not just a cookbook--also a great primer By Natester For readers already familiar with the Python cookbooks from Packt, you'll know the recipes in the cookbooks strive to share practical examples without getting into esoteric details. The "Python Parallel Programming Cookbook" is more than a cookbook: It includes introductions to core concepts of programming architectures and programming architectures. These introductions are necessary to take advantage of parallel processing (not just with Python).Cookbook examples are also supported with discussion of other parallel processing concepts when relevant. This is definitely helpful in understanding the "why" some recipes are efficient. (Disclaimer: I've not tried all of the recipes in the book, but the descriptions with the examples I tried were helpful.)Also an important note about this book: It does not start with a quick intro to the basics of the Python language or how to configure a Python environment. This book is definitely for developers familiar with Python that need to take Python to the next level of performance--a good one to have in the collection.

Really good coverage of the key concepts in parallel programming By Tim Crothers While an experienced Python programmer I didn't have much practical experience in parallel programming prior to reading this book and was eager to learn. In the end this book proved to be an overall excellent source of examples and explanation on how to go about writing parallel programs in Python. In particular I found the mix of theory and examples to be well balanced. The only reason the book rated four stars for me rather than five is that there is a lot of very awkward grammar that makes reading a fair bit of it a chore. I found the awkward grammar structure sometimes forcing me to re-read a section two or three times in order to understand the point. A good round of editing to clean up the grammar issues would easily make this book a five star title. Grammar problems notwithstanding the content of the book is well worth the effort of deciphering the grammar shortfalls.

I really recommend this book By ruben For all the users I did not have enough experience with this language, I could experience that with this book it helpsme a lot to understand the procedures and everything about this. With the recipes I could develop the main idea of a system, I really recommend this book. for all the user or developers that like to develop withslanguage. You will understand anche Pycsp, the Scoop framework, and disk modules in Python. Further on, you will learnGPU programming withPython using the PyCUDA module along with evaluating performance limitations.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Potentially Good Introduction to Contemporary Swedish Speculative Fiction. By John Kwok This is a very good collection of short stories by writers - virtually all Swedish, with one or two nationals from other countries residing in Sweden plus several Swedish expatriates - that surprisingly doesn't seem to be all too cognizant of some current trends in Anglo-American speculative fiction, most notably the "New Weird" speculative fiction coined by Jeff VanderMeer that has had, among its most notable practitioners, the likes of himself, China Miéville, and, more recently, David Mitchell ("The Bone Clocks", "Slade House"). One of the strongest tales is the very first, "Melody of the Yellow Bard" in which the writer, Hans Olsson, melds his life-long interest in music with physics into a rather unexpected, at times, disturbing, first contact/end of the world tale that bears some resemblances with the "New Weird". Another highlight is Erik Odelhal's "Getting to the End", in which the character's obsession with a tape recorder may remind some of a brief sketch of a China Miéville, except from Miéville, the result would be far more mysterious and unsettling. Despite the title of the short story collection, "Waiting for the Machines to Fall Asleep", readers shouldn't expect anything that could be viewed as much post-cyberpunk, as, for example, Lauren Beukes' brilliant debut novel "Moxyland"; instead, the stories tend to be more hard science fiction in their orientation, like My Bergstrom's psychologically driven interplanetary war space opera tale "Mission Accomplished". Anyone whose literary tastes tend toward traditional hard science fiction should find much to rejoice in this short story collection, but hopefully these very good tales are not indicative of current speculative fictional trends in Swedish fiction.

Note: I received a paperback copy of this book by the editor in exchange for an honest review.I absolutely enjoyed all the stories in this book (for individual ratings see below.) This book is so much more than just an anthology. It was an experience. So many different stories, so many unique concepts and such amazing writing styles - this book has everything to be a brilliant read. There were some stories that literally made me feel dreadful thinking about what might have happened (Lost And Found) and there were stories that made me smile (To Preserve Humankind.) There were stories that really worked me out in anticipation (Outpost Eleven) and stories that I thought were funny (Jump To The Left, Jump To The Right.) Never have I ever enjoyed a single book so much.I'm going to be looking out for more works from the authors I enjoyed the most. I'm really happy that I am lucky enough to have read this book. I'll recommend this book not only to Sci-Fi fans but to anyone and everyone who wants to read some beautifully crafted stories.I really hope that they decide to release this book internationally, so that everyone in the world can read this book.Following are the individual ratings for all the stories:Melody Of The Yellow Bard: 5/5The Rats: 5/5Getting To The End: 5/5Vegatropolis - City Of The Beautiful: 4/5Jump To The Left, Jump To The Right: 5/5The Order Of Things: 5/5To Preserve Humankind: 5/5The Thirteenth Tower: 4/5Punchcard Horses: 3/5The Philosopher's Stone: 5/5A Sense Of Foul Play: 5/5Waste Of Time: 5/5The Damien Factor: 5/5Wishmaster: 5/5Quadrillennium: 3/5Mission Accomplished: 5/5The Road: 4/5Lost And Found: 5/5The Publisher's Reader: 3/5Stories From The Box: 4/5The Membranes In The Centering Horn: 5/5One Last Kiss Goodbye: 5/5The Mirror Talks: 5/5Keep Fighting Until The Machines Fall Asleep: 5/5Outpost Eleven: 5/5Messiah: 3/5You can also read this review at The Reading Bud.

Tant Note - I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes.First, I have to say...for the lay reader (like me), there's a certain hipster-niche in the phrase "Swedish Science Fiction." And if that dissuades anyone from looking at this anthology, then that's a shame. This is a darned fine collection of thought provoking short stories...starting off very strongly with Melody of the Yellow Bard and a solid followup with The Rats. I think my favorite is the semi-titular "Keep Fighting Until the Machines Fall Asleep," which neatly incorporates themes of humanity and automation. Quite a few of these stories have twist endings, and more than a few are dystopian (some more than others), but all of them are very interesting reads. It also bears mentioning that the text and editing of this anthology are first-rate.This is an enjoyable volume of hard-core sci fi. I really enjoyed reading it.

Only complaint is I had to buy this for 2.99 to only read one episode the last one because I read all the other ones. If you are going to lump all your books together you should do it before you already wrote 4 or 5 episodes.

I was fortunate enough to not come across this series when only the first book was published. Right after I read the first one, I was able to quickly snatch up the second one so I could continue the story without having to wait. Now that I'm down with the second book, I've been anxiously awaiting the third book in the series. I keep checking Amazon to see if Dead Highways 3 has come out yet. Please Mr. Brown, hurry up with the third book! What I liked about this book is that it expands on each of the characters and it shows their strengths and weaknesses and how they work together to survive. The ending of this book left me on the edge of my seat waiting for more. The only bad thing I can say about this series is that I have to wait too long for the next one. Keep them coming Mr. Brown!

The character's are likeable and you become involved with them and want to be with them when the SHTF and it will hit the fan and splatter! You need to read the 1st book "Dead Highway's:Origin" to know what's going on in this book but you will really be happy you did and it won't feel like you wasted your time. There's a 3rd book which I haven't been able to buy ~ seems to be a problem because it does look like it's out but I am sooo going to buy it* I also plan on buy more books from this author ~ I really like his writing he's got me hooked*

By Tim Johnson Whether we remember it from our American History class or whether we've seen it in the movies, everyone knows the story of the OK Corral, and the gunslinger shootout that happened there, involving the Clanton's, the Earp's and Doc Holliday. Now take the truth of American history and juxtapose Townsend characters - adepts and their associates - over reality. It's fun to watch the fictional characters interact with the real characters. This book is a fast paced work with many sudden plot twists. A good read. I read it in 3 sittings.

September 1942. The few men from the Sturmpionierbataillon to have survived the North African campaign have now been sent to the eastern front. Throughout the crucial fight for Stalingrad, a battle which claimed two million victims, human tolerance is tested beyond all limits. There is trench warfare, hand-to-hand combat for every single building, hunger and cold. Madness becomes the last place of refuge before death… In these conditions, young Leutnant von Wetzland is forced to accept he cannot possibly keep up even the most basic of moral standards. And that applies to himself, as well as his men. This book is based on extensive research, including numerous interviews with contemporary witnesses. But this is fiction rather than non-fiction. The author chose to keep close to the fiction, even when the two competed for priority, so that he could get inside the main characters’ minds – and look with them into the depths of the abyss. It’s this that gives the book its exceptional quality amongst the many other publications on Stalingrad, and sets it alight as a heartfelt, fiery protest against all war. Christoph Fromm was born in 1958 in Stüttgart and has been a screenwriter since 1983. He came to fame with his work for the cinema, ‘Treffer’, ‘Spieler’, and ‘Die Katze’, and was rewarded with an Emmy and the Grimme Prize for his outstanding three-part docudrama, ‘Die Wölfe’. Since 2002 he has been Head of Screenwriting at the Filmakademie in Baden-Württemburg. In January 2006, he and Tina Liszius jointly founded Primero Verlag publishing house in Munich. His novel ‘Die Macht des Geldes’ was published by Primero, as are both the German and the English versions of the Stalingrad story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Real pictures instead of a strange nightmare By Amazon Customer I’m in my early thirties and I knew war only from the news. Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, the IS terror. Those pictures stay on the surface of the mind, they seem somewhat unreal, as if they could not, should not ever be concerning one personally. Because of this I thought that a book about Stalingrad would be even harder to grasp. But it wasn’t like that. I was sucked right into the world of Lieutenant von Wetzland’s and his unfathomable subordinate Gross’s thoughts. I was able to follow the transformation of a war romantic to a war defector in detail. Why someone who hates war, can not rid himself from it, like an addict can not rid himself from his drug. The death toll – in Stalingrad alone there were about two million victims – is monstrous, compared to contemporary casualties. The suffering of the wounded too. Out of these reasons one would have enough pretext to repress those pictures like a nightmare, but this book forced me to accept them as real. Not only because it is blatantly based on eye witness accounts, but also because it does not leave anything out, sugarcoats nothing. And I realized one thing: No matter how modern the devices of war may become, the destruction caused in our minds will always be the same.

His length stands for a seemingly endless death struggle that lieutenant Hans von Wetzland and his companions undergo while fighting, wandering and questioning themselves in the no man's land at the east front. The simple division of morality into good and evil is being shaken up. Rather, through the fight between moral demands and basic human needs, soldiers become aware of the dissociation of their personalities. One part of them still believes in God and the hierarchical structures of the army. Whereas the other part tries to regain his self-determination through unmasking the forced believe in higher powers as a simple method of pushing forward the individual. The way the novel is written reveals the grotesque inversion of the war: In the description of humans and battlefields the thoughts become substantial and soldiers turn into machines while machine guns and tanks gain an independent existence.Stalingrad not only gets through a historic event in a fictitious story, but also finds a figurative language of his own to describe the inner conditions of the soldiers being put in a landscape of destruction.

Merciless study of the abyss inside the human mind By Amazon Customer This novel really swept me off my feet and it took a long time till I felt back on safe ground. While being always accurate in its historical details, it tells the story of lieutenant von Wetzland and his front-line unit on the battlefield of Stalingrad. Especially its clear and vivid account makes you never forget the almost unbearable images of this cruel war. Nowadays, you can hardly imagine the horrible events during the siege of Stalingrad. But this novel introduces you to various characters and their thoughts, so that you can at least gain an impression. This is why I believe the novel to be very authentic and instructive. I really want to recommend it to everybody who is interested in historical events and the dark abyss inside our minds.
