This second installment in the Airborne Trilogy is even better than the first By Pannebakers This second installment in the Airborne Trilogy is even better than the first! Our hero, Steve, is involved in his next two combat jumps and once again the detail of Mr Emmert's research is evident. You are there, in the Normandy hedgerows trying how to get to the other side without loosing your life and the lives of all of those depending on you. This story is moving and caused tears to form in my eyes at parts. Other times I was chuckling with the humor shared between friends. This is a great second book in this trilogy. Same historic accuracy as the first but you are now vested in these characters. You feel their pain with loss, your heart is encouraged by the heroism displayed, and you can't help but respect the warriors these young men become. Stand Up! Hook Up! and prepare to jump into this great WWII novel!

The action takes place during Henry III's reign and follows two intertwined plot lines: 1)the adventures of Chicot, the king's "jester," and 2) the love intriques of Bussy d'Amboise and the tragic Dame de Monsoreau. The political rivalries of the various aristocratic court factions is entertaining and interesting and, it is my impression, fairly (but not completely) accurate history. Though Chicot is an invention and the historical Bussy (a footnote character of the period) highly highly romanticised. Who cares if a small liberty or two are taken? Chicot is marvelously drawn, a wonderful character who both loves and despises his weak and highly flawed benefactor, Henry III. Chicot is clever, cunning, brave and decent but interested too in his own interests. He is also a proud but poor Gascon gentleman. He manipulates the king for his own amusment but also for good purpose. Were the book only about him it would be a great read. But even better, Dumas gives us Bussy d'Amboise, Louis de Clermont, Comte de Bussy, the brave, proud, handsome, man of honor who personafies the French aristrocratic (especially the post-Revolution, 19th Cent. Romantic notion of,) ethos. The romance between Bussy and La Dame (Diana) is romantic indeed: he is injured in a cowardly ambush (in which he defends himself magnificantly, of course) Diana nurses him but secretly and her identity remains a mystery for sometime. Poor Diana has a tragic situation and eventually, Bussy manages to find her etc... The ending is unforegettable and provides the basis for the sequal: The Forty-Five Guardsmen: an uneven story with some good moments, but sadly, inferior to this. Note: "La Dame" is the sequal to Marguerite de Valois (see film: La Reign Margot aka Queen Margot) I first read this when I was about 19 and it is still great, great fun 21 years later. If you like any Dumas, you'll like this alot. Technically, of course, this is not great literature but it is great in its own way.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. good book but too many typos in this edition By qh Great book if you are a Dumas fan, and especially if you've read "La Reine Margot". But this edition (ISBN 1-60096-103-7) of the book is full of typos. They even misspelled the name on the front cover - if you click on the "Search inside the book", you'll see the name of the book blatantly misspelled as "Chico the Jester". These typos get really annoying in an otherwise great book. I would not buy books from this publisher (Waking Lion Press) any more.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. sad By robsky kostratsky I read this book after I saw movie La Dam de Monsoreau when I visited France with my parents, I was 12. I think the actual book is much better than a movie, Dumas made a good statement in this book by drawing the line between something dirty, which is politics and something that could be so clean, beautiful and yet tragic, which is love. Whenever we love something in this life, we afraid it will be taking away, nothing is permanent. Although this book is a complete fiction, the message in it is very real.Highly recommended.

In 1875, teenager Lucy Nickerson slips into a haymow dalliance with family farmer Morgan Dinkins, a liaison that brings Rob Nickerson into the world with the unpromising prospects of a woods colt-the child of an unwed maiden of the mountains. But it's the pious people around the hamlet of Nabors Mill who euphemistically call Rob a woods colt. The more charitable mountain folk accept him into their milieu and refer to him simply as "Morgan's other boy." The quirks of fate and turns of misfortune eventually bring Rob and Lucy enduringly together with his natural father, giving the boy a happy childhood. But the halcyon years end abruptly when Rob's first romance collapses in a searing rejection, plunging the young man into depression that drives him to the sheer edge of self-destruction. His youthful instincts pull him back from the brink and spur him to leave home and family. He makes his way on foot up to the mountain crest and hitches a wagon ride down the other side to seek his future in the Shenandoah Valley. Rob's valley adventures land him a job as a farm hand on the big spread of Mennonite Jonas Schank where he meets Sally, the hired man's daughter. Passions flare and, forbidden to marry by Sally's parents, the lovers elope in the night and follow the moon to West Virginia, only to be tracked down by Earle Harman, Sally's enraged father. After adroitly evading Earle and a deputy sheriff with bloodhounds, the fugitives flee on foot, braving a ferocious midnight storm, only to be captured the next day while sleeping in a barn. Earle jerks Sally away from Rob, who is then cast into jail, tried and convicted of consorting with an under-aged girl. His imprisonment marks the end of The Tale of a Woods Colt, the first book of the serial trilogy In the Land of Rob. Rob's stint in the penitentiary, his subsequent valley adventures that lead him back to more adventures in his mountain home, and the bizarre double love life he takes up are portrayed

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Life in a Bygone Era By robert terrell This is a historical novel in the same sense that Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn are historical novels. The story is based on the life Rob Nickerson, a mountaineer in a remote hollow of the Virginia mountains, but in the descriptions of the life of the principal character his neighbors and kinsmen the reader gains understanding of a forgotten way of life. Nickerson would have remained unknown and forgotten except for the fact that the author, G. Mason, knew him when Nickerson was old and Mason was a boy. Mason describes with exquisite detail the isolated lives of the hollow folk from the time of Nickerson's conception is 18** to his Huck Finn like experiences when he first encounters the world outside the hollow in 19**. Little did Nickerson know that his life that seems so different to anything the reader would experience in today's world be recorded in the superb memory of the author and recalled in the pages of a book 45 years after his death at age 9***.The reader is swept along with feelings of pity for the poverty of the people to whom we are introduced and at the same time envy for the simplicity and interdependence of their lives. The author captures the accents and peculiarities of the mountain dialog and the reader quickly catches the tonalities that define its unique speech patterns. The death knell of life in the hollows was sounded in the 1930s when the Federal Government established the Shenandoah National Park and moved the mountaineers out of their isolated existence. The author spent his boyhood among the last survivors of that existence and absorbed their stories with keen observation. The Tale of A Woods Colt is the first of the trilogy that will continue the life of Nickerson in the volumes that follow. It is such an engaging story that the reader will find it hard to put it down and will be waiting expectantly for the next part of the story.

It introduced me to a warm and fascinating world - the culture of the mountain people in the Virginia Blue Ridge. The characters are now real people to me - I feel very fortunate to have met them - particularly old man Rob. Beautifully written, I did not want to put the books down. I feel that we are lucky to have this opportunity to know this part of history - and to know those who lived these lives.I highly recommend this trilogy - you will feel the world, know the people and want to be part of it.

By Amazon Customer The Tale of a Woods Colt develops the background of a Blue Ridge Mountain family and lifestyle. It is thoughtfully written to combine story line with history. One feels a part of the family and culture, as the challenges of the age leave their mark on the characters. This is a wonderful, light-hearted read that one yearning for the 2nd book, The Call of the Whip-Poor Will. I enjoyed the characters and history, while learning about an era gone by. Definitely can't wait to continue the journey with Rob Nickerson.

The Albion Chronicles book 1: The Girl of Two Worlds (Volume 1), by Nelly Harper

Review I should start by saying this definitely isn't your average 'going back in time' type of 'time travel' novel. Set just after the Roman exodus from Britain, it goes against tradition and, very cleverly, flashes forward to the present day. Beautifully researched and unusually well written, there isn't a hint of a 'stumble' as you read. In fact, this compelling story ebbs and flows with its own inexorable rhythm and draws the reader onwards towards events that should have been a part of history (even if they weren't!). The Girl of Two Worlds is a success on many levels. The plot carries a powerfully Pagan message of death and re-birth that repeats and resounds throughout. It tells a fascinating story, set in a time period that most people have never considered, let alone explored. It also addresses a range of controversial issues but doesn't let sentimentality get in the way of a cracking good read. As I hope you can tell, I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the next in the series!

About the Author Nelly lives with her son and one of her daughters in the stunning Blackdown Hills on the Devon/Somerset border.  They share the house with their cats and a wonderful array of magical creatures she has lovingly crafted. For the last twelve years she has been a regular at medieval and mutli-period events around the country.  The last two years she has also added a well known LARP event to her hobbies.  Here she can often be seen playing her customised harp.

If you're a fan of Bernard Cornwell or JV Jones, then you will love this book. It's not very often I find myself gripped by a book, but this is definitely one that had me hooked. Any spare moment I had found me reading, even if it was just a page at the time. I am grateful that I have finished this, I might now be able to get some sleep as I found myself in bed going, just one more page! The characters are very well written and easy to empathise with and the depth of description makes it really easy to visualise the scenes. I loved the way that as Kariss explores the past and learns about the world, the reader learns along with her, it really draws you into the story. It also has a couple of twists that I didn't see coming.I cannot think of a single criticism of this book, except perhaps that the next one hasn't been written yet! Get writing Nelly!!!

This is a book about the enormous changes that took place at Baylor University from 1991 to 2003, as seen through the perceptive eyes of its provost at the time, Donald D. Schmeltekopf. On the front end was the charter revision, a change that permanently restructured the legal governance of the university. On the back end was Baylor 2012, a grand vision for the university issued by the Board of Regents on September 21, 2001. There were several critical crossroads along the way to what has now been created at Baylor, a Christian research university, one of a kind among church-related universities in the Protestant orbit. These memoirs tell the story of this transformation from the perspective of one who was leading at the crossroads.

Baylor at the Crossroads: Memoirs of a Provost, by Donald D. Schmeltekopf

Review ''With Baylor at the Crossroads, Don Schmeltekopf has provided a splendid record of how best to negotiate the tough choices all church-related schools face today. . . . Don's service is instructive to all of us who care deeply about the life of faith and its inextricable relationship to the life of reason.'' --Mark R. Schwehn, Professor of Humanities in Christ College, Valparaiso University ''Having watched and written about Baylor's remarkable rise to a research university while simultaneously strengthening its Christian character, I hungered for the story of that ascent by its architect, Provost Donald Schmeltekopf. My hunger was satisfied by this exciting account that reads like a novel while offering important teachings about how schools might achieve quality with soul.''--Robert Benne, Jordan-Trexler Professor of Religion Emeritus, Roanoke College''Schmeltekopf's vision, integrity, and courage helped drive Baylor forward during a period of enormous change. . . . May this memoir guide and inspire a new generation of academic leaders at Baylor and beyond.''--Wilson D. Miscamble, Professor of History, University of Notre Dame ''A must-read for anyone interested in the past struggles of Christian higher education and its future prospects. We all need to learn the lessons Schmeltekopf can teach.''--David Solomon, H. B. and W. P. White Director Emeritus, Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture''As its chief academic officer, Donald Schmeltekopf presided over the transformation of Baylor University from a regional school known chiefly for its undergraduate teaching into an international research university known also for its integration of firm Christian faith with rigorous academic research. Schmeltekopf's memoirs of his years as the Baylor provost provide excellent insight into this revolutionary event.''--Ralph C. Wood, University Professor of Theology and Literature, Baylor University --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Donal Grant, by George MacDonald

About the Author GEORGE MACDONALD (1824-1905), forerunner of the Inklings--Scottish minister, poet, novelist, and imaginative seer--was one of the most beloved Victorian authors throughout Great Britain and the U.S. in the 19th century. He wrote some 50 volumes of novels, poetry, short stories, fantasy, sermons, and essays. His influential body of work placed him alongside his eras great men of letters and his following was vast. Two decades after his death, his books were pivotal in leading C.S. Lewis to Christianity. He thus became the foundational member of Wheaton's Wade Center Seven. After his death, most of MacDonald's books eventually went out of print as his name drifted from memory. However, he continued to be revered by an impressive gallery of well-known figures, including G.K. Chesterton (who referred to him as one of the three or four greatest men of the 19th century ), W.H. Auden (calling MacDonald one of the most remarkable writers of the 19th century), and Oswald Chambers ( ... how I love that man! ). In spite of such a following, however, MacDonald's reputation gradually declined throughout the 20th century. MacDonald's most notable champion of the last century was C.S. Lewis, whose journey from atheism to Christianity was sparked by George MacDonald's prophetic view of God. Lewis persistently acknowledged his debt to MacDonald, whom he called his master. Lewis wrote: "I dare not say that he is never in error; but ... I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer ... to the Spirit of Christ Himself.... I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master, indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him." Both in his autobiography and throughout his writing career, Lewis emphasized that George MacDonald was the most significant impetus in his own spiritual pilgrimage. MacDonald's writings can thus be seen as the spiritual soil out of which the faith of C.S. Lewis emerged. MacDonald's novels, fantasies, and fairy tales provide the imaginative foundation for Lewis's later writings, including the Chronicles of Narnia. In spite of his own popularity, however, the spiritual roots of Lewis' s faith remain largely unknown. Lewis's words of 65 years ago are still true today. It has not seemed to me that those who have received my books kindly take ... sufficient notice of the affiliation [with George MacDonald]. Notwithstanding Lewis' s frequent emphasis on the Scotsman's influence in his own life, MacDonald's name in the late 20th century drifted into obscurity and his books became unavailable. A resurgence of interest in the forgotten Victorian began to mount in the 1970s and 1980s, given initial impetus by Wheaton's Wade Center and the work of two Wheaton professors, Dr. Clyde Kilby, founder of the Center, and Dr. Rolland Hein, who released several editions of MacDonald's sermon extracts. MacDonald's name then exploded into public view in the years following, largely from the efforts of MacDonald redactor and biographer Michael Phillips. Building upon the efforts of Kilby, Hein, and others, and inspired by them, Phillips's work resulted in a new generation of readers discovering anew the treasures in MacDonald's stories, and led to a renewed publication of MacDonald's books on an unprecedented scale not seen since his own lifetime. Now more than ever, thousands the world over are discovering why Madeleine L. Engle called George MacDonald the grandfather of all of us who struggle to come to terms with truth through imagination.

Be prepared, because it is some 800 pages long, but you are never disappointed either with the story line or the author's spiritual asides which read almost like a devotional. The main thrust of the story is about a young tutor named Donal Grant who leaves home after finishing college and sets out on foot to make his way in the world to a nearby coastal town in Northeastern Scotland. He meets a shoemaker who becomes his spiritual mentor, and finds employment and lodging in the nearby castle. As the story progresses we meet a reclusive, drug addicted uncle, his beautiful but spiritually dull niece, and his spoiled and brash son who is up to all kinds of naughty flirting with the shoemaker's daughter. The most appealing part of this novel is the element of the supernatural which Mr. MacDonald brings in. There are ghost noises, somnabulisms, secret rooms and passages, murder, scandal, and ghost stories and legends. Ghosts to George MacDonald represent part of the vast region of the Spirit which exists beside and beyond our own, and he never posits their accual existence. They are never a source of evil power or fear because all things exist by the power and will of God.Get this book, it is well worth the very low price. There are parts (perhaps 15%) which are written in Scotch dialect, but it makes the book that much more interesting that you have to use your brain a little to recognize what is being said.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. By Jeffrey W. Smith Of George MacDonald's Scottish novels, Donal Grant is my favorite. The title character reminds me much of Curdie in MacDonald's fantasy novel, The Princess and Curdie (Princess and Curdie (George Macdonald Original Works)), which I highly recommend as well. For those having read Sir Gibbie (Sir Gibbie (George Macdonald Original Works) (George Macdonald Original Works)), Donal Grant is somewhat of a sequel; it is Grant's story, not Gibbie's, and may be enjoyed without having first read Sir Gibbie. In addition, for those who enjoy a bit of Victorian gothic literature, Donal Grant may be a good read since the setting takes place within a castle containing several, rather dark, secrets. Elements of the traditional ghost story are offered as well.Concerning the product itself, the Johannesen edition of Donal Grant would be the best copy to buy. Not only is it bound in a sturdy, green hard-back cover, but it's pages are acid-free and durable, not grainy. The font size, though a little small, is dark enough and easy to read. As well, like all of the editions printed through Johannesen, the book's title is printed in heavy gold letters on the front and spine. It is a truly beautiful book and well worth the money, not to mention that this edition is considered authoritative among literary critics. I hope that this review has been helpful for you - Happy Shopping!

Has a lot of different sermonettes that appeal to me, and truth that has satisfied me when I was searching for truth hungrily. I remember the last chapter particularly. There are some beautiful pictures in this book--I guess you could call it "mystical". In the "scary" parts, I remember Donal's courage; and I admire Donal's boldness in various situations throughout the book. Donal wasn't afraid to respectfully disagree with others on doctrine. This story is vivid in my mind and I love it!

I had a hard time going to sleep while reading this. Erlik and Palladius encounter a foe unlike any other, and I'm telling you, it will freak you out! What started out as great Viking action in "Weregild" has morphed into Viking horror through "Tides of Fate" and now Death Head. I can't get enough!Bring more Black Erlik!

The is probably the best of Hunsinger's Erlik saga and I really truly enjoyed the setting and the liveliness of the storytelling. Five stars!

By Casey Wagner This book goes over the entire Monday Night War and what is now called the Attitude Era in great detail from an outside Kayfabe (In storyline) perspective. With over 200 fully colored and nicely printed pages, this is definitely worth the price of admission.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not a history book, but still great! By Hamza Abdelrahman Great book, defentinely deserves the buy if you want to be entertained in a sense. I bought it for an essay I was writing about the Attitude Era, and I expected it to have all the bits and pieces regarding that era; it rather had what superstars thought about the era and the most memorable 'wrestlers' back then.If you're really into that era, i would recommend you check the following: This book, 'WWE 50' book, the Monday Night War series on the WWE Network, and the rise and fall of WCW (also found on the network).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. so the bottle opener is cool as hell By Joseph Anello Okay, so the bottle opener is cool as hell. Let's get that out of the way. As for the book itself, it's a pretty extensive look at the key moments and figures of the Attitude Era, but it's not for the casual fan / reader. A lot of times the book jumped right into talking about subjects with barely a sentence worth of context to set it up. It's a great read if you already know a ton about wrestling and its 90's history. If not, you might be a touch lost at times. Nothing a quick Google search wouldn't fix, but it might be annoying.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Satisfying read and good range range of stories By Scott Dargon This anthology is surprising varied for the potentially narrow subject it includes. The stories inside range from traditional fantasy, thru to contemporary Sci-fi and even modern noir, making it an interesting and varied read. Although not all the stories were to my taste, there were plenty which I enjoyed and there are a couple of real gems. The strength of this anthology is that it cleverly weaves together a wide range of styles and voices to make an inclusive and satisfying read. Recommended.
