The English is not yet available at amazon.comI wish that the publishers had not changed the Italian title "A senso del dolore" to the one used in the English language release "I Will Have Vengeance" for this book is more about sorrow than vengeance. I wish that the author had made more of a link between the verisimo operas being performed in the book (the almost over-done double bill of "Cav and Pag") and the verisimo lives in fascist Naples of 1931. Maybe the problem is that the ingredients of opera, Teatro San Carlo, Naples, fascist Italy of 1931 and a detective who "sees" the dead cooks up into just too grand a minestrone for this interesting detective story.Consequently, for me, much remains incomplete. For instance, the author explains that giving a foundling the last name of Esposito was a common Neapolitan practice but doesn't add that this last name derives from the ancient Greek practice of exposing unwanted infants to the elements.In short, after enjoying the novel thoroughly, I was thoroughly unsatisfied. (Three stars) Too short a book. (Five stars). Very few times in my reading life, have I wanted a book to be longer. This is one of those few times. (Average 4 stars)

Authentic By Montalbano Good to see more 'authentic' Italian crime fiction being translated into English at last - rather than the poor man's version: the foreign (ie English/American) writer capitalising on an exotic location, while adding 'local colour' in the form of recycled clichès about Italian bureaucracy or politics, for example. While that is a perfectly valid approach, I can't help but think it's another example of the triumph of 'packaging' over 'content' that has defined western culture in recent times ... anyway, enough pseudo philosophy and back to the book.Having a hard-nosed police commissioner who can literally 'see' the the final moments of victims' lives after the event would seem to place the series more in a fantasy/supernatural genre rather than in crime fiction, but somehow it's a device that seems to work - and quite powerfully at that. It also adds another 'emotional' dimension to the story in a genre that can often be too clinical or seen as just a problem-solving exercise. The only minor criticism would be that, for me, the novel's setting (ie the 1930s Mussolini era) was not a central part of the story, and therefore seemed superfluous. On the other hand, why should it? Maybe it's just due to my outsider's curiosity/ignorance and something Italians understand innately and don't need to make a big deal about. Whatever ... I suppose it does add to the mystique and somehow makes it even more 'foreign'.

It is amusing and a very good description of the Duce's epoch. Sometimes it sort of gets to socialist or paternalist but just a little. I intend reading more from this series

Thankyou Joseph Lumpkin By DH Koester Though raised as a Protestant Christian, it held little interest for me as I had trouble believing in some man up there in the sky directing our fate, particularly when there was so much suffering here on Earth. I became a man of science, scoffing at the blind faith of believers and demanding proof for all assertions, religous or otherwise.Mid-life I found myself between jobs with time on my hands and decided I'd best read the King James Bible so that I'd at least have some idea of what I was talking about when discussing religon. I sat down and read it cover to cover without pause, highlighting historical passages and jotting down ancestoral lineages as I went.When I'd finished I was so intrigued by what I'd read in the Old Testament that I began drawing time lines, filling in dates, jotting down the time periods of the Biblical characters, following up leads in other referenced texts and researching, verifying and tying together historical events and various lines of thought. My research led me to other related topics--Egypt and The Book of the Dead, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Gilgamesh, the Twelfth Planet, Worlds in Collision, Campbells Power of Myth, Velikovskys' Worlds in Collision, Sumerian literature, scientific books on Ancient History and the origin of mankind and the story of the Lost Tribes and the Ark of the Covenant. I read the Mormon Bible then the Quran. I devoted an entire year holed up in my little apartment sitting at my table 12 hours a day surrounded by texts, notes and maps and the deeper I went the more excited and obsessed I became.Then I discovered the Apocryphic books that had not been canonized by the various committees of religous figures assembled and tasked with making those decisions--but all with bias, agendas and the powers-that-be leaning on them.I read Jasher, Jubilees (Little Genesis) and Enoch and was astounded by what I read. My mind felt like a giant balloon ready to explode. I became a man obsessed thirsting for more and more.In 1998 I traveled to Armenia ("And There I Was", Vol.V by DH Koester)--along with Ethiopia, the first nation in history to declare Christianity their state religon. In Armenia I first learned what true Christianity was--like the other worlds great religons, not something you practiced once a week but instead something you lived every minute of your life. Now there was a Christanity I could believe in. I was blown away by the Orthodox Church in Armenia--and even more so by that in Ethiopia.In Ethiopia ("And There I Was", Vol. VIII by DH Koester), in 2004, I traveled with a guide and translator to a small island in Lake Tana and there met its only resident, a priest who had lived there his entire life, never having set foot elsewhere. On this island, the Ark of the Covenant had once been kept and next to this Priests' stone abode was a cave that went back into a small hillside. It was barred by a heavy old door made from rough hewn timber and hand forged iron straps. The Priest led me into its darkened recesses where were stacked pile after pile of ancient bound transcripts and documents, most handwritten on ancient parchment--historys' first written records of mans' beginning and the origins of Christianity--most written in Ethiopias' ancient first language of Geez. The modern day King James Bible is just the tip of the iceberg known as Christianity. Studying Christianity based on the Bible was like judging the United States based on Oklahoma.Here in this cave was much of the rest of the iceberg and I sat with the Priest as he gave me his interpretation of a well known passage in the Bible. I thought its meaning was clear to me but I was wrong and hearing his interpretation was like bringing me out of the dark halls of ignorance into the bright daylight of insight and wisdom. He had spent his entire life on that island studying the cave of texts and now I saw the necessity of having a Priest explain Biblical passages to laymen such as I.If you want to call yourself a Christian, here is my advice: Get this book--read it cover to cover--make a pilgrimage to Armenia and then Ethiopia--study their rich history, visit their incredible churches get to know their people. Then you will be able to truly claim you are Christian. Then you will once again become excited about and proud in both your religon and your new-found knowledge. Get this book--it will be a treasure to you and to those to whom you pass it down. If one is led by the Spirit of God to walk in victory as a child of God who commits no sin, you can find amazing encouragement and growth from the Wisdom of Solomon, the Shepard of Hermas, and the Book of Enoch, to name just a few. Great background at the end of his collection as to some history of each sub-book. If you are led by the Spirit of God, you should not fear any of His inspired works outside of the "typical" canonized and accepted 'bible'. Highly recommend. -Matt

Its very big, but being very big, and a paperback, the front cover and back cover, along with the binding, are very thin. I've been constantly reading this and pages in the very back on The Shepherd of Hermas section are already coming out because of the weakness of the binding, and I do take good care of the book. So if you buy this book it is possible for the pages to fall out. Hopefully the author could publish this in a hardcover.

Both were hungry for control. In On the Edge of Sunrise, we read about two people caught in the crossfire of this power struggle.Arria is a young widow, who is forced into a marriage to Tribune Drusus, who she despises. She loves another, a forbidden love. Garic is a Frank Warrior, a Long Hair, who Arria falls in love with. She is requested by a Roman commander Aetius to deliver a message to Attila the Hun asking for his support. She is the daughter of a Roman senator and is very knowledgeable in politics but she becomes a hostage.The love they share is fraught with danger as there are many enemies of both the lovers. An Egyptian slave who is determined to see that Garic and Arria are killed, an ambitious Tribune who looks for power are among the enemies that Garic and Arria have. During this time when the Roman Empire is on the edge of collapse and Aetius's power grows Garic and Arria must do whatever it takes to protect their love and to see that they and their friends and family are safe from political intrigue and death.Years ago I was fascinated with stories of Rome during this timeframe, just the civilization and its culture that has a lot of influence in our own society today. Between the romance, adventure, and battle scenes it is hard to put down! I really appreciated how much depth she gave to characters and it made you want to learn more and more about them. The heroine is a strong female character that you'll be rooting for the entire book. And the villains in the book will make you mad! You'll be flipping pages to find out what happens to them in the end!I don't typically read historical romance novels, but I found this book to be extremely intriguing and I really enjoyed learning about the history. You can tell Cynthia did her research writing this book! The historical detail is incredible. And the romance in the book was the perfect amount! I look forward to next the books!

Strong characters, intriguing plot, adventure, excitement, tragedy and hope, with a perfect amount of gore. I have invested a huge part of myself in this story, and now that it's all over, I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.I've heard it said once or twice that vampires are finished. After the whole Twilight craze, classic vamp fans complained that vampires had been bastardized, while "Twi-hards" demanded more of the same, and a wave of similar books flooded the market. Rhiannon Frater reminded me that vampires are NOT, in fact, dead. (...well, technically, they are I guess... but not the genre. You know what I mean.) Vampires can still exist within the horror genre, and can even have elements of romance. Female characters can be strong and empowered, and be a role model for women everywhere.The ending was... satisfying. I don't know how else to describe it. Beloved characters die (I would have been disappointed if everyone had survived. That just isn't realistic.), but all of the plot threads are now woven together in a way that makes perfect sense. I had been wondering how Rhiannon was going to wrap it all up. Things had started to look a little bleak for them. ;)If you didn't have the chance to read along with the serial as it was released, that's okay. Serials aren't for everyone. Consider it a trilogy and dig in! I am proud to say that IDWMA is being crowned as my favorite vampire series of all time, and I don't see it being dethroned anytime soon.

The historical setting is unique, full of local detail that suggests a great deal of research. Stone is an author who understands difficulty, especially growing up in poverty. His experience clearly lends itself to the book, and the final product is exceptional, both in its quietly evocative writing and its well developed setting and character. About the Author Rik Stone grew up amidst the slum-lands of fifties North East England and left school at fifteen without academic qualifications. He worked in shipyards, spent time in the merchant navy, and went on to work in quarries in South East England. But he was an avid reader and because of it, fiction writing had always been his want. After retiring at fifty, he was able to pursue the dream seriously. From that dream came the Birth of an Assassin series.

Birth of an Assassin 2: The Turkish Connection By megHan Last year, I read the first book of the Birth of an Assassin series, Birth of an Assassin, for a blog tour and loved it. So, when I received an invitation from the same blog tour coordinator, specifically saying that he requested I be part of his blog tour for book two, I couldn't possibly say no. After reworking my schedule a little bit, I took the book on - and I am SO glad that I did.The Turkish Connection was a great book. From the very beginning, I was wrapped up in Mehmet's story and could not put the book down. The things that this boy not only endured - but LIVED through - were shocking and heartbreaking, but at the same time, the adventure that he went on, and watching him become a man, were fascinating. The prologue, which contains the story of what leads Mehmut to where he is now, is creative and, when everything comes together in the end, I have no words.Rik Stone has a way of writing that I love. He makes you feel like you are right there with the characters, going through what they go through, feeling what they feel, and it makes reading the stories he creates so much more believable and so much more, for lack of a better word, thrilling.Even though I really liked Mehmet, I think my favorite character in the story was Senturk. He just wasn't like the other boys.This book was definitely better than the first one and I can't wait to see what story comes next. A definite recommend for people who love thrillers, characters that you can really care for, and adventures that leave you unsure of where you are going until you finally get there.Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Fantastic By Phil Bolos The Turkish Connection: A Birth of an Assassin by Rik Stone puts the reader into the slums of Istanbul in the 1950s and 1960s. Levent has come up with a daring plan to steal money from a friend and start a new life for him and his son. On the night of the robbery, he is caught and sent to a watery grave leaving his son, Mehmet, fatherless and motherless. Through a misunderstanding, Mehmet is kidnapped and dragged into the life of a thief. Slowly, he becomes and expert at the craft and a master with a knife. However, the man who murdered his father learns that he is still alive and uses his connections with the Istanbul police to have Mehmet killed. Wounded in the fight, Mehmet manages to jump offa bridge where is is picked out of the water by Yuri, a fisherman who was also his late father’s friend and a Spetsnaz agent. Keeping the boy hidden from the police, Yuri nurses him back to health and teaches him how to be a soldier and operative. Unknown to Yuri though, Mehmet has a deep burning desire to become the best warrior he can be because he knows who tried to have him killed and will soon learn of the connection back to his father’s murder. The Turkish Connection is an intense, emotionally driven novel focused around thieves, criminals, and undercover agents. With each page, the reader becomes more interested in each of the characters and yearns to find out what will happen next. Stone’s protagonists are just are intriguing as his antagonists and as the reader grows to appreciate and hope for the success of the heroes, so does the reader come to hate the criminal slime they are pitted against. Fans of military fiction and historical fiction alike with enjoy this edge of your seat read.

After his father’s childhood friend Beyrek killed him, he told the leader of his gang of street urchins to “take care of him”. The young leader misunderstood setting out to teach him to be a street thief. When Beyrek realizes he is alive, he sets up again to have him killed. A police chief on Beyrek’s payroll shoots Mehmet. Diving off the pier, he begins to drown only to be pulled from the water by a passing boat piloted by Yuri another friend of his father’s. Here the real story begins setting Mehmet on a new adventure that is even more dangerous and illegal…Action-packed from beginning to end full of anger and revenge as Mehmet seeks to find out what really happened to his family. Set in Istanbul of the 1950’s Stone writes a believable suspense thriller with unforgettable characters, especially Mehmet and the street urchins. I couldn’t get enough of this remarkable page-turner and the author’s uncanny yet powerful ability to tell a story. I found this book sometimes dark, however deep and engaging a perfect mix of suspense and so much more - an exceptional read.

Complete and very well explained By FreddyF I was a bit « afraid » of Core Data before reading the first edition, but afterwards I decided that the next app I’d make would use Core Data!So I did, and I put « Zen Places » on the app Store. It uses both Mapkit and Core Data, and I had fun building it. Not sure whether it is really useful for other people, but I use it to collect pictures from places around the world. I managed to put as many Core Data topics as I had learnt in the book, like NSFetchResultsController, filters, Core data stack, etc, in combination with MapKit.And now I just updated my CoreDataStack with this edition !The explanations are very progressive and crystal-clear.

Not recommended for senior programmers that need to get up and running with advanced use cases fast By Erik Z I am coming from 7 years of Android development at a major player in the Android business (5000+ employees), I had the position of Senior Engineer. I quit to join a small start up business. In my new position I am also heading up the iOS effort. That's why I got this book, to read up on Core Data.What I expect from a book, especially one that costs as much as this one did, are insights that are hard to obtain. Hard to obtain insights are the ones that make you google / stack overflow for hours because you don't understand some bug that you are running into that the documentation doesn't make clear, or because you have a more advanced use-case.It's not hard to get a Core Data stack up and running by reading tutorials online. This book is basically just a collection of tutorials from the web, it doesn't even have an index at the back (wtf!)I don't recommend it, unless you are a beginner, or unless you don't like reading simple tutorials off of a computer screen.

Lee I have about a year of professional iOS experience coming into this and I found the book to be really well paced for someone my level. All the concepts are very well explained and the sample projects are designed so that you have a chance to try out everything. The writing style is light-hearted and to-the-point so it was quite easy to read. This is not a book for completely iOS beginners as the authors do assume some familiarity with iOS development.Small criticism:There are little things here and there that makes the book feel a little unpolished such as inconsistent formatting in the sample project or inconsistent coding style across projects. There are also duplicate code that's not properly factored out. It's definitely nothing major and nothing that a developer won't be able to understand.

Most Recommended CNA Study Guide By Amazon Customer At first, I was hesitant to buy this guide since I read a negative review that said it was “unreadable” due to printing issues. However, I found top recommendations all over the internet and from my classmates and decided it had to be good.I’m not sure what the reviewer saw, but it was absolutely fine. In truth, it was a little unfair and misleading that the poor review reflected on the book and not the printing company – which subsequently was Amazon’s printing company. Plus, compared to the other CNA study guides, this was BY FAR THE BEST…my friends were right.Unlike other study guides, I was thoroughly impressed with the layout and the presentation of the information. I enjoyed the fact that every chapter started with keywords and phrases for each subject and then moved in a methodical nature through the material. It’s as if I knew what to expect in the next chapter, and really helped me to flip back to important parts of the book.I also loved their pretest. The purpose of this was to immediately help me figure out where I needed more help. Although these questions seemed to be a little too easy, it was still a good indication of where I was weakest.Finally, my favorite part to this guide was the practical procedures at the end. With each major practical procedure on each page, it became easy for my study partner and I to practice. She would tell me the required procedure, and I would walk through each step as if I were performing the real test. Although we had our notes, we found there were some key parts that we had just taken for granted, like washing our hands or speaking to the patient as we performed.

So, i jumped on Amazon and found a couple of CNA study guide books. Here's what I learned:1. The official CNA Study Guide was the better of the three2. CNA Certified Nursing Assistant Exam Cram came in a close second, although a little outdated (2009?)3. CNA Study Guide: Nurse Assistant Complete Test Prep was good but didn't have as much content as #1 and 2.4. And I didn't try the rest because they looked really unprofessional.The official CNA Study Guide in particular did an excellent job of organizing the information and I especially loved its Pretest which helped me to immediately figure out where I needed to work harder. I also liked that they focused on the practical exam portion and did an excellent job of providing the required steps as well as recommendations. The CNA Exam Cram book did this as well...not so much for the others.

I'm not saying my course didn't give me the necessary information, but like this book said, it really helped me to efficiently prepare for the exam.Here are a couple of points that I really liked about this CNA Study Gudie:1. It was cheaper than the rest of the "legitimate" study guides...okay, so I am a cheap scape.2. I loved the number of forms and graphs that helped to organize the information3. The best part was getting a pretest at the beginning. This really helped me to figure out where I needed to study more.4. Then there was the two final practice tests at the end. They were pretty close to the real thing, which was nice.All in all, for the price, this book was exactly what I needed.

In that awful moment, most of humanity dissolved into a rusty, sandy residue, captured in mid-moment as they went about their everyday chores. Along with them the modern trappings of this world also vanished, for there was no one remaining to monitor the dams, generator plants, communication facilities, transportation facilities and infrastructure of modern civilization. The fraction of humanity who survived were faced with finding each other and rebuilding a life void of all the rules, laws, and customs of society. Small groups of people gravitated together to form communities numbering mere dozens of people. New morals, customs, and priorities were established as they attempted to survive. One questions was forefront in their minds. It was the first questioned asked when they encounter each other. It was; “What happened?” The fourth book in The Event series, The Genesis Particle, finally provides the answer to that question. Slowly the survivors realized they had been changed, altered. The found that not every female was fertile. Two-thirds of the surviving females had been rendered barren. The implication of that effect was astounding, especially in a world where survival of the human race depended on procreation of the species. Therefore, when it was discovered, in The Event—The Genesis Particle, that a surviving scientist not only knew the cause of the dissolution of humans across the world, but he also had the cure to the infertility, it became paramount that he be gathered into the safety of the Ranger Republic, where he could be protected and encouraged to complete his research and hopefully reverse infertility in the females.

Not only are you taken on a roller-coaster ride of fast paced action, but many questions raised in the first three books are answered in the process. The author has managed to weave an unbroken tapestry of narrative throughout all four volumes of The Event and that is the hallmark of any good storyteller. With this latest effort, Mr. Boutwell has earned a rightful place among the best of storytellers. Do yourself a favor and read the whole series.

By Joel Diaz This book is quite clever, the author tries to involve the wide community to join him in quest to understand the book of Matthew. He teaches us that in most cases we have misread what is said about the Lord and the savior. He tries to grasp an understanding for himself, but he still requested some assistance by being interactive with the reader.

A New Friendly Understanding of Matthew's Message By Reverend Mike Wanner The questions raised by the author transport readers to a fresh new viewpoint/slant on the messages within Matthew. Even as a minister, i have found the bible to be a great sedative and at many times totally boring. This writer brings a user-friendly dynamic to hearing the message. Things stuck out from reading this book that never seemed significant before. Jesus being baptized by John while John sought the reverse. The craftiness of the devil.The writer also brings his humor and personality to understanding the old ideas from a current perspective. The importance of asking is clear when looking at Peter's lack of attentiveness while walking on water and then his crying out to Jesus for help. A fresh sensitivity toward divorce also emerges and helps to ease the way for all.I highly recommend this book to all who want to move closer to God but have been put off by strict doctrines that seem rigid. This book will share a perspective that will help you to revisit the possibilities for personal peace. May all who read this message and/or the book be blessed AND SO IT IS!

By Martina Isabela Beltran As I began to read through Kurt Olson's commentary on Matthew, I was immediately struck by the simplistic profundity by which he engages Scripture. Keep in mind this book is not scholarly in nature yet it is scholarly in its depth of thought. This means that Kurt exegeses Scripture with a view to the layman without sacrificing when needed the engagement of what could be termed more scholarly material. He walks through the entire book of Matthew one chapter at a time, devoting a chapter in this book to the events that Matthew records in his gospel. This is an easy to read book on Matthew. Kurt Olson does a great job of providing relevant cultural background information in a way that brings the text to life on academic and emotional levels.
