In case you, dear readers, are not aware, this is book 2, of the Faslane Files - which is a spin off of the series by the same author, Noah's Ark. In this spin-off, 100 people are left at a submarine base, called Faslane - to see if they can form a community and work out more than just survival skills in a world made uninhabitable by an asteroid and the poisonous ash it left behind. While the rest of "Noah's Ark" sails on in search of more humans and possible inhabitable locations around the world. In this edition, the stalwart survivors and "pioneers" are faced with problems stemming from fuel - that is, lack of fuel. They discover some interesting properties about diesel and the asteroid ash. There is also an underlying story line, that leads you to feel as though a secret plot is underfoot, and that keeps your attention! Part of the mysterious-ness is derived from the discovery (in the first book, but continues) that there are secret floor locations beneath the underground base, where some unsavory experimenting was taking place. This is the kind of story for anyone who enjoys reading the genre covering apocalypse, end of world, preppers, or similar type stories. I wish I could give this a 4.5 - I can't give it a 5 - because I still feel like there is a slight shallowness to the author's characters - not that they lack in virtue or humaneness - just that they are not as interesting and exciting as, well, they could be. :-) I guess 1 or 2 dimensional, is the right description. I completely forgot who was who - when I read the second book. That was ok, because it's still a great story, and some of it came back as I went along. The author is British, I believe, and that might be part of the reason why I (American) always feel slightly disconnected with the characters - or it just might be that this author still needs to work on character development - who am I to say? I'm just a reader. Enjoy the book. But first, start with the Noah's Ark series, you only need to read, perhaps 2 of those, and then you can start in on these.

A growing field in computer applications is the use of algorithms to spot the lie. The most promising area within this field is the analysis of the language of the liar since speakers effectively control only the meaning they wish to convey, but not the linguistic style of the communication. With the advent of computational means to analyze language, we now have the ability to recognize differences in the way speakers phrase their lies as opposed to their truths. The main goal of this book is to cover the advances of the last 10 years in automatically discriminating truths from lies. To give the reader a grounding in deception studies, it describes a range of behaviors (physiological, gestural as well as verbal) that have been proposed as indicators of deception. An overview of the primary psychological and cognitive theories that have been offered as explanations of deceptive behaviors gives context for the description of specific behaviors. The book also addresses the differences between data collected in a laboratory and real-world data with respect to the emotional and cognitive state of the liar. It discusses sources of real-world data and problematic issues in its collection and identifies the primary areas in which applied studies based on real-world data are critical, including police, security, border crossing, customs, and asylum interviews; congressional hearings; financial reporting; legal depositions; human resource evaluation; predatory communications that include Internet scams, identity theft, fraud, and false product reviews. Having established the background, the book concentrates on computational analyses of deceptive verbal behavior, which have enabled the field of deception studies to move from individual cues to overall differences in behavior. The book concludes with a set of open questions that the computational work has generated.

In a time of intolerance, following your conscience is a dangerous choice... “In the meantime, a credible report caused all ecclesiastics of the Catholic Church to lament and weep.” -Prudentius of Troyes, Annales Bertiniani, anno 839 On Ascension Day May 22, 838, Bishop Bodo, chaplain, confessor, and favorite of both his kin, Emperor Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne, and Empress Judith, caused the greatest scandal of the Carolingian Empire and the 9th century Roman Church. Bodo, the novel, dramatizes the causes, motivations, and aftermath of Bodo’s astonishing cause célèbre that took place during an age of superstitions, a confused Roman Church, heterodoxies, lingering paganism, broken oaths, rebellions, and dissolution of the Carolingian Empire.

Set in the early 9th century during the waning days of the Carolingian Empire after the death of Carolus Magnus, the story line follows the growth, development, trials, and travails of one Bodo. Forced into the priesthood at an early age, and destined to become the number two man in the Empire as chief adviser to Charles the Bald, Bodo chucks it all for another religion and exile. While sources for this era, and particularly for non royals like Bodo are few and far between the author devoured every single shred of evidence that does exist and filled in the gaps with very well educated guesses--which is the fiction writier's responsibility. For anyone interested in how the enlightened Carolingian Empire degenerated into a new European Dark Ages of internecine warfare and ignorance to last hundreds of years, this book is a must read. For more of my reviews, please visit www.Thrillerview.com

Woodland The book starts out with Bodo as a young child of 6 but of course he thinks he is the man of the house as his father is away at war. He and his sister have had a privileged, quiet life but that will soon change. Due to the death of their father the children are sent into the care of their uncle and the course of Bodo’s life changes in ways he could never have imagined. It is a time of great change in the world at large and within the Catholic Church. The church was a source of power and through it a man could rise far above his place in life. Many noble families gave younger sons to the church to keep fingers in the pot as it were. Bodo turned out to be this donation for his uncle’s family and he was forced into the priesthood. With no other family to gainsay the decision off he went at a very young age. He did end up a powerful man – he was confessor to Louis the Pious and so very close to the power in the land.Bodo though found more comfort in the Jewish religion and converted to Judaism. This caused an uproar so huge that written records exist of the shock. You can only imagine that given how little has come down from the 9th century that this must have been truly shocking. Mr. Platt has taken what little written record there is and created a fascinating novel full of rich period detail. The conflicts going on during this period between ruling parties and the church ultimately led to a breakdown in society in general and brought on the Dark Ages. All of that angst is woven into the book through the telling of one monk’s story.I started it on Sunday and really had a hard time putting it down and I was disappointed when I finished because I didn’t want it to end – as cruel a world as it was the writing was so good.4.5*I received a free copy for my honest review

A must read for fans of Carolingian historical fiction By Erin Al-Mehairi Donald is a fabulous technical and historical writer overall, but Bodo the Apostate (his newest novel) is nothing short of his best work all the way around. Not only is his writing immaculate and his history engaging, but in this book his dialogue and character's thoughts, personalities, and actions are so real and dimensional that I found myself enamored and smiling from the start. The Bodo that Donald presents in this book (as of course, little was known of him and one-sided) is highly intelligent and advanced ("gifted") from a very young age. He's curious, inquisitive, thoughtful, analytic (I have some kids like that so I truly understand it), but in the Carolingian period, which is pre-Medieval age circa 8-9th century, religion was serious (yes, even more serious than by today's standards). Bodo is taken to be enrolled at the Academy located at the winter palace of Emperor Louis the Pious (the son of Charlamagne) for his smarts, and as well, his great-aunt just happens to be the mother of Emperor Louis. So, when on the cover it states, " In a time of intolerance following your conscience is a dangerous choice...." I can totally understand this comment in relation to this book. When one is forced to become a priest and religion gets political and divisions are formed, loyalties demanded and abused, an educated person with a high intellect (these types of people generally think for themselves and don't follow the crowd, but make logical and educated decisions) is likely to not follow the demanded path. Bodo made a decision to change religions and flee to exile (this is historical record so I don't feel it is a spoiler), but the book mostly takes place prior to that. It was so very interesting reading of the path that led to his decision and his thoughts behind it. Donald takes what little historical detail was accounted for and intertwines the best scenarios he could deduce in order to bring us Bodo's story, while simultaneously showing us what led to the demise of the Carolingian Empire. In fact, most of the book really dealt with the political and religious issues of the times, using Bodo as the propelling plot to showcase it. However, he does give us probably one of the only, or at least, best accounts of what his life might have been like afterwards when he lived in Andalusia (al-andalus), Hispania.I love Carolingian historical fiction. There is something about it that lies between truth and fantasy, so even the facts seem surreal. I've grown up loving this era and Donald's book is another wonderful novel on a list of highly regarded and entertaining books of this time period. Though the book is totally a historical fiction meant to be as authentic and plausible as possible, utilizing best guess based on research, in some way it just so reminded me at the start of something like Lord of the Rings. That's probably crazy, but the book reads as if someone is telling us a legend (like the Legends of King Arthur, but rather, the legend of Bodo the Apostate, not Bodo Proudfoot, Hobbit!!). I totally admire this story and was enthralled by each chapter. I definitely never wanted to have to stop reading it, but would rather have had a day to do nothing but be entrenched in this book.Donald's writing is detailed, visual, entertaining, informative, interesting, and he creates characters that readers can relate or connect to, creating understanding among all various types of people and their relations with others. He writes with a courageous pen in order to honor little-known men in history that made giant decisions. I believe Donald likes to research, critically think, and put together and forth other accounts of those lost to history that could become their lasting legacy as much as he likes to write entertaining material.Helping historians, as well as readers, to understand other sides of history and make sense of religious intolerance, strife, and its lasting ramifications does a great service way past adorning bookshelves. Donald writes historical fiction of true meaning in a fashion that is so very captivating.Highly recommended for the true pre-Medieval or Carolingian reader who are made happy by this time period fantasy feel, as well as those who are interested in historical reference about the angst between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.I was given this book in exchange for a honest review. Opinions are my own.

Although a fictionalized account, the author delves into the true and sordid history of the witch hunts of the time. The is an excellent book for those who appreciate a good yarn as well as desiring to learn more about the witchcraft trials in England. Ms. Crowther goes into great detail, for example describing prison life and conditions for the "accused". She also writes with real knowledge about the dubious methods the witchfinders used to discern who was considered a "witch", such as the "pricking" and "dunking" tests. Clearly, she has done her research and writes with real authenticity. This is a page turner that although painfully sad and gruesome at times feel very true to what actually happened in seventeenth century England. The characterization, dialect, descriptions of the Craft rituals and the infamous Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins (a true historical figure) all come to life in a very powerful story. Highly recommended!

Great idea, poor execution By Nightlark I understand Crowther's motivation for writing the book and the concept is great but the fiction writing just didn't grab me. Her prose is jerky, the story pacing wasn't consistent. The structure is odd. I feel like she could have used a few more revisions and a better editor.Still, I think this is a significant work and a must read for anyone interested in British Traditional Witchcraft. I think this might be Crowther's only novel, she does better with non fiction, so keep that in mind when reading.

Beyond Style: Mastering the Finer Points of Writing, by Gary Provost

From School Library Journal YA Early on, Provost says that this book is aimed at those who have ``done a good deal of writing, and perhaps published some of it.'' While that profile may not fit many high-school students, schools with a large writing program may find this how-to book valuable. Written in a breezy, conversational style, its easy readability is likely to appeal to students looking for a non-textbook writing manual. Some of the topics are covered by Strunk and White in Elements of Style , but others, such as pace and tension, apply particularly to longer fiction and nonfiction writings. The section on originality is helpful, as is the part on how to avoid stereotypes. There are some suggested exercises, but many readers will look only at the parts that describe what they are having trouble with, repair manual style. The index is adequate but suffers from the use of jargon like ``luggage'' and ``plants'' which average students may not know. In addition, all excerpts of published and non-published works used as examples are indexed by author, which is not useful as some come from struggling writers who have written to Provost for help. The book will be a good follow-up to Peter Elbow's Writing Without Teachers (Oxford, 1973). Carolyn Praytor Boyd, Episcopal High School, BellaireCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Learn the fine points of writing from the best By Sunnye Tiedemann Style is something that's easy to recognize in someone else's writing, not so easy to see in your own. Provost's book addresses things like the relationship between form and content, proportion and spacing, slant and theme, spinning a "spell," how to weave the reader's dream -- the hard stuff that writers hope will happen but often don't know how to create. This book is the best and it's from one of the finest writing teachers around, who is sadly missed since his death a couple of years ago.Writers of fiction and nonfiction alike will benefit from it. It teaches skills that will set your writing apart from everyone else's. Provost gives the writer control over the material.

May 30, 1956. Chicago On a quiet street corner in a working-class neighborhood of Holocaust survivors and refugees, the body of a little schoolboy is found in a suitcase. He’s naked and chopped up into small pieces. The grisly crime is handed over to two detectives who carry their own personal burdens, Hank Purcell, a married WWII veteran, and his partner, a wise-cracking Jewish cop who loves trouble as much as he loves the bottle. Their investigation leads them through the dark corners and mean streets of Chicago—as more and more suitcases begin appearing. Based on the Schuessler-Peterson murders that terrorized Chicago in the 1950s.

Suitcase Charlie, by John Guzlowski

Review An intelligent, beautifully written thriller that confronts the dark and disturbing side of humanity, and evokes both the horror and the banality of evil. It is vivid, gripping and moving - a fine, compelling novel. -- Danuta Reah, author of Forest of Souls.

About the Author Born in a refugee camp after World War II, John Guzlowski came with his family to the United States as a Displaced Person in 1951. His parents had been Polish slave laborers in Nazi Germany. Growing up in the immigrant and refugee neighborhoods around Humboldt Park in Chicago, he met hardware store clerks with Auschwitz tattoos on their wrists, Polish cavalry officers who still mourned for their dead comrades, and women who had walked from Siberia to Iran to escape the Russians. His poetry, fiction, and essays try to remember them and their voices. His poems also remember his parents, who survived their slave labor experiences in Nazi Germany. A number of these poems appear in his books Language of Mules, Lightning and Ashes (Steel Toe Books), and Third Winter of War: Buchenwald (Finishing Line Press). Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz, reviewing the Polish translation of Language of Mules, for the journal Tygodnik Powszechny, said, “This volume astonished me.” A Professor Emeritus at Eastern Illinois University, John Guzlowski currently lives in Danville, Virginia, where he recently completed a novel about the German soldiers who murdered his mother’s family during the Second World War. The novel, Road of Bone, is available from Cervena Barva Press and Amazon. Garrison Keillor read Guzlowski’s poem “What My Father Believed” on his program, The Writers Almanac. Guzlowski’s other poems and stories have appeared in such national journals as North American Review, Ontario Review, Rattle, Chattahoochee Review, Atlanta Review, Nimrod, Crab Orchard Review, Marge, Poetry East, Vocabula Review and in the anthology Blood to Remember: American Poets on the Holocaust. He was the featured poet in the 2007 edition of Spoon River Poetry Review. Dr. Guzlowski’s critical essays on contemporary American, Polish, and Jewish authors can be the found in such journals as Modern Fiction Studies, Polish Review, Shofar, Polish American Studies, Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction, and Studies in Jewish American Literature.

By Michael Main Full disclosure: I was a colleague of John Guzlowski at Eastern Illinois University for two years in the mid-90's.John Guzlowski is an amazing poet, and as with his poetry this novel wastes no words; evoking place and time, but also mood and mind-set and the tensions of life in a big city rocked by violence. As a resident of Chicago's near North Side for over fifteen years, I can attest to the accuracy of the author's detailed glimpses into the corners of the parks of the city, the convent houses and shotgun bungalows, the bars and street corners where his world-weary detectives ply their trade. To say that this novel is about race, immigrants, and hatred would be an understatement. Yet it's also a novel about hope, about redemption, about peace. And it's a ripping good detective novel besides.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Far more here than just finding out whodunit By LMKaminski An excellent crime thriller -- I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The characters, settings, and social circumstances depicted in this novel all smack of veracity; I felt I could easily have been reading a nonfiction memoir written in the third person. While SUITCASE CHARLIE certainly delivers as a gripping detective novel, it also delivers a deeply disturbing glimpse into how racial and ethnic prejudices and propaganda can become dangerously institutionalized in society and internalized by individuals. Most crime thrillers are "read once and pass on to someone else" for me, but I'll be keeping this one to read again -- there's far more here than just finding out whodunit.

Someone is murdering children, draining their blood, chopping them up and stuffing them in suitcases. Hank Purcell is a seasoned detective and WWII veteran, assigned to the case. Along with his trouble-making, heavy drinking partner, Marvin Bondarowicz, the detectives search for clues among the dregs of the city.John Guzlowski has fictionalized a true-crime story and he's done a fantastic job of it. The subject matter is dark and going noir was probably the best, if not only, way to do it. 1950s Chicago probably had a certain grittiness to it and the characters in this novel definitely reflect that. The author remained true to the era and I appreciated that. I also appreciated the ending - without giving away spoilers, I liked the way book ended. And, although there was a satisfying conclusion, there still remains an opportunity for a sequel(s) involving these two detectives.I would recommend this book to fans of the noir genre and anyone who enjoys a good whodunit. I'll look forward to more from this author!eBook Review Gal received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

And I am looking for a cheaper way to tone down my body shape and stay healthy and fit.I was satisfied the content of this book because you can use this book if ever you don't have any personal trainer. In my opinion, this book is as good as having a personal trainer. The instructions are clearly stated and in addition, it has pictures you can follow on to. Great book but I personally think that men should read this more likely than women. The book was very organized and has different sections for whatever part that you want to work out. I do a lot of cardio but now I'm losing weight so I need to start toning. I've heard of some of these exercise, but it's nice to get a reminder of what I need to be doing.Honestly,I purchase this book for my husband but after I checked on the exercise instruction,I become interested. So now me and my hubby are doing 1 hour cross training ones a week.

Sherlock Holmes and the Whitechapel Vampire, by Dean P. Turnbloom

From the Author The two-plus years I've spent researching and writing this novel have been extremely rewarding personally. I've met and corresponded with a host of good people, from publishers to agents to Sherlockian enthusiasts. The work has progressed and matured all along the way.My hope is that this book will please not only those fans of Arthur Conan Doyle, to whose Estate I am grateful for their support, to aficionados of the "Jack the Ripper" murders. I've endeavored to remain true to the facts in almost every case, as I know the facts to be, as well as the spirit of Sherlock Holmes, as I understand him.I would ask each reader to stop by and comment on the book and give it a review. I think they will find it worthy in all respects.

From the Back Cover Jack the Ripper is on the loose, terrorizing the streets of London's seamy East End in SHERLOCK HOLMES and the WHITECHAPEL VAMPIRE.In this fast-paced novel set in the Victorian London of 1888, a string of heinous murders in London's East End has Inspector Abberline of Scotland Yard baffled and his boss, Commissioner Sir Charles Warren furious that no arrests have been made of the culprit the newspapers have dubbed "Jack the Ripper".With pressure for an arrest mounting, a reluctant Abberline calls on Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson for assistance. Using a combination of intuition, luck, and good old-fashioned police work, the trail they follow leads them directly to Baron Antonio Barlucci. The wealthy Italian financier is a long time family friend of Sir Charles and a ruthless vampire. His trail of blood stretches from Paris to London and if he's not captured soon an innocent young Italian immigrant will swing from the gallows for a murder he didn't commit. The baron, though, has other plans. He's come to London to enlist the aid of a young American, Dr. Alan Tremaine, to cure his vampirism. To complicate matters, the baron has fallen in love with Sir Charles's niece, Abigail Drake.Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts, "Jack the Ripper" aficionados and fans of old school vampires will find something to love in this meticulously researched novel that dares cross multiple genres.

By Raven Sherlock Holmes and the Whitechapel Vampire by Dean TurbloomI should note two things here: 1) This is definitely non-canon. It isn’t even written by Watson, it is told third person. 2) It is going to seem like I give a lot of spoilers, but really this just sets up the story. I guarantee that you will have surprises waiting for you in the book itself!1888. Two twenty-something friends, Carlino Gaetano and Vittorio Martini, buy passage to London aboard the cargo ship Lira. Also aboard is a rich family with their daughter, Gianette Rossini. Also aboard is the mysterious Baron Barlucci, who by his own account is a six hundred year old vampire.Aboard the ship, the rich Gianette falls for the darkly handsome but poor Carlino. They meet at night and soon are pledged to each other, even though Gianette is headed to England to man the rich man her parents have chosen for her.She is taken one night by the bloodthirsty Baron, and Carlino Gaetano is arrested for her murder.Meanwhile, on an unnamed case in France, Holmes and Watson are approached by Chief Inspector Renard. He has a current case of murdered prostitutes being dumped into the Seine. He also mentions that this is a recurring crime that goes back at least one hundred years.Holmes denies that the events could possibly be connected. He also refuses to listen to Renard’s tales of Vampires. Holmes is standing on science, and discounts vampires as just ignorant superstition.Baron Barlucci takes a home in London called Darthmore Hall. He engages the services of Doctor Alan Tremaine, a man who specializes in diseases of the blood. Doctor Tremaine agrees to work for the Baron, hoping to find a cure for Vampirism.Holmes takes the case of Carlino Gaetano at the request of his friend, Vittoiro Martini. The Baron takes an interest in Sir Charles Warren, The Police Commissioner of Scotland Yard’s niece Abigail Drake. Despite knowing what he is, aka a Vampire, she falls for him.Meanwhile, the vampire is hungry. This is Whitechapel, 1888. The year of Jack the Ripper…None of this is really a spoiler, as it is told right up front in the first small chapters of the novel. The fun for the reader lies in the chase, and what lies around the next bend. Much historical fact is told during the investigation in Whitechapel. The search for a cure for Vampirism is a tense scene, as the Doctor wants to cure the Baron. The Baron’s behind the scenes actions leave one in suspense as to whether he is going to make a bad slip-up and reveal his true nature.I found the pacing and mystery of this novel rather good, and as it is only volume one in a new series by Dean Turnbloom, we have more to look for in the future! I grant this amazing book five stars!Quoth the Raven…

Vincent van Gogh? All come together in this excellent pastiche- Sherlock Holmes and the Whitechapel Vampire. Throw in some Italian immigrants, murders in Paris and London and lovely music- enchanting music that will soothe and mesmerize the soul.I really enjoyed Whitechapel the TV series with Rupert Penry-Jones and Phil Smith- so I was set to dig into another Ripper tale, this time with Holmes for added body.I found this to be a suspense story with just the right amount of clues and bloody gore. Will the vampire be able to be cured? Will he marry his love before she finds out about his dubious past? Will Holmes and Watson find the Ripper before he strikes again? Or leaves for the Big Apple? If you like vampires or are a fan of the ripper, don't miss this one.

By Marcia I read this through with the intention of reviewing it, but I needed to spend a few days coming to grips with it.In short, This is a thickly-detailed and richly woven story of murder that combines those of us who read because it has a) Sherlock Holmes b) Jack the Ripper, c) Dracula-figures and d) Victorian suspense. We'll call this one e) all of the above.e) is a very difficult category. I have not read anything like this since a Fred Saberhagen marathon, and with this book I may possibly believe Saberhagen has a candidate to bestow his cloak. The research is clear and the characters are strongly fleshed. The villain is absolutely, completely, and without a doubt one of the iciest #%&*(#$% I have read. You find yourself caring about the characters even when you begin to suspect something awful is about to happen to them. And the conversation between Holmes and the vampire is classic. Without giving away details, there is a reason why Holmes does not believe he is talking to a vampire. The novel may be split between the supernatural mentality and the realm of proven facts--in the center is a burgeoning new science that may bridge the gap between both. But with the two sides be willing to meet?If you want a lot of literary "bang" for your buck, this is the sort of book you need. Diehard readers of the Ripper Case will recognize details that keep quite faithful to the plot of the story. In closing, I have read more than one book where the Ripper was in a Holmes novel, and where the Ripper was a vampire (usually Dracula), and how science can complicate a curse (and vice versa) such as the major plotline of DARK SHADOWS. But it is very difficult to catch all of these threads and even harder to weave something good out of them.

Lydia has just received a letter from her old friend Mouse, who now lives in the Shaker community in Mount Unity, New York. To Lydia and Rees’s astonishment, she’s in trouble with the law. She’s kidnapped five children, claiming that their mother is unfit to care for them. Despite the wintry weather and icy roads, Rees and Lydia set out for New York. There’s nothing they can do for Mouse legally, though, and they reluctantly set out for home. But before they’ve travelled very far, they receive more startling news: Maggie Whitney has been found murdered, and Mouse is the prime suspect.

Cradle to Grave, by Eleanor Kuhns

From Booklist A cry of help from a dear friend sends itinerant-weaver-turned-farmer Will Rees and his wife, Lydia, from Maine to the Shaker community of Mt. Unity, New York, in the winter of 1797. There Sister Hannah Moore, familiarly known as Mouse, is accused of kidnapping widow Maggie Whitney’s young children when Mouse seeks to rescue them from their alcoholic mother’s neglect. Then when Maggie is found dead in an open grave, Mouse becomes the prime suspect. With his detecting background, Rees assists the local constable in investigating the murder of Maggie, a poor woman who risked being “warned out” of her community. Rees believes two succeeding murders are related to Maggie’s, as he puts himself at risk and exposes small-town secrets, meanwhile bonding with the Whitney children and regretting missing much of his own son’s childhood. The third in this series (after Death of a Dyer, 2013) is notable for developing the characters of Will and Lydia, whose personal lives take a turn in the closing pages. Another eminently readable historical mystery, set in the post-Revolutionary years, from librarian Kuhns. --Michele Leber

Review

“Kuhns hits all the right notes--a clever plot, well-rounded characters and a rich sense of place, time and culture--as she successfully weaves all elements together into an intelligent whole.” ―Richmond Times-Dispatch

“The third in this series is notable for developing the characters of Will and Lydia, whose personal lives take a turn in the closing pages. Another eminently readable historical mystery, set in the post-Revolutionary years, from librarian Kuhns.” ―Booklist

“Vivid and historically accurate…The atmosphere is often grim, as secrets are kept and revealed. Kuhns brings the political and social customs of the time to life with telling details and exact language.” ―RT Book Reviews (4½ stars)

“Intriguing…readers will sympathize with Will, whose interactions with the children spur deep guilt about how uninvolved he was in the raising of David, his grown son.” ―Publishers Weekly

She has been accused of kidnapping. It turns out that she was trying to rescue several children from a woman named Maggie who clearly struggles with alcoholism. While Rees and Lydia try to help Mouse and the kids, Maggie is murdered. This is the best one yet in this series. I found the characters so compelling. One of the things I like best about this author is how she draws you into the time and place of the story so completely. The other thing is that the kids seem like real children - they are not overly sentimentalized versions like you frequently see in historical novels.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Eleanor Kuhns' "Cradle to Grave" is an Emotionally Tense Historical Mystery Involving Unwanted Orphaned Children By J. B. Hoyos Will Rees, a wandering weaver and an amateur sleuth in the late seventeen hundreds, has married Lydia Farrell. Together, they leave Dugard, Maine, to visit a Shaker friend, Mouse, who lives at Mount Unity in the small community of Dover Springs, New York. Mouse (real name is Sister Hannah Moore) has been accused of trying to kidnap the children of a beautiful, young drunkard, Maggie Whitney. Maggie is the town outcast because of her wanton ways. An unmarried woman, each of her children appears to have a different father. Maggie is murdered and Mouse becomes the prime suspect. When Will begins investigating, someone attempts to kill him and those he loves.Of the three mysteries that Eleanor Kuhns has written, "Cradle to Grave" [following "Death of a Dyer" (Death of a Dyer (Will Rees Mysteries)) and "A Simple Murder" (A Simple Murder: A Mystery)] is the most emotional. Not since Hester Prynne of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" have I encountered a woman more scorned because of her adultery. Maggie Whitney has four children and each one appears to have a different father. To make matters worse, she is an alcoholic who often loses consciousness and is unable to take care of her children and an infant foundling that she is supposed to be wet-nursing. Fortunately, Will Rees and his wife, Lydia, are able to move into Maggie's dilapidated shack and take care of them. The adorable children fall in love with Will and Lydia, and vice versa. The author knows her history. She depicts the horrors that the children must endure after Maggie is murdered. They become outcasts, unwanted and unloved. Not only is their parentage brought to question at the town council meeting but also the parentage of their mother, Maggie. If Maggie isn't a citizen of Dover Springs, then the children will be turned out of the community and will not be able to claim any Poor Relief, a type of community welfare. In those days, children began working as farm laborers when they were twelve or younger. Many were worked to death. Simon, the oldest boy, works hard milking cows. He is like an indentured servant or slave. If it wasn't for Will and Lydia, the children would have gone hungry. I can't help but love this couple; they're a great sleuthing team. The reader receives a brief history lesson on the Revolutionary War. There were the Patriots who strongly opposed the British and the Loyalists who supported them. Suspicions abound that one of Dover Springs' citizens, long deceased, may have colluded with the British for financial aid. Times were perilous and people, especially women, would do anything for food. I've said many times before that historical mysteries, such as this one, make me appreciate living in modern times and living in the USA. However, some of the social issues that were a concern in the late seventeen hundreds have grown considerably worse today. For example, we have an epidemic of children being raised by single mothers. Many fathers are not taking responsibility for their children. Will is a man that is determined to be a better father the second time around. He will not make the same mistakes that he did with his son, David, who ran away in Kuhn's debut novel, "A Simple Murder."Though the body count is not a high one, there are enough murders and violence in "Cradle to Grave" to maintain a fast pacing. At times, the mystery is quite complex. However, acting like a type of Police Lieutenant Columbo, Will Rees gathers all suspects into one room, as he did in the previous novels, and is able to reveal the murderer. The ending is a rather emotional one that will please fans of this series. Because of the adorable children in peril; the cold, icy setting; the emotional drama of trying to determine who fathered each of Maggie's children; the Revolutionary War history; and the abundance of violence, I highly recommend this mystery. On a more personal note, I would like to say that I finished reading this novel with a greater understanding and sympathy for those who, like Maggie, suffer from addictions. I shouldn't judge others until I have walked in their shoes.Joseph B. Hoyos

An Enjoyable Mystery By Jodi Chapters **May Contain Spoilers**Cradle to Grave is the first book I’ve read by Eleanor Kuhns, and having read the book I’ll be picking up her two previous novels Death of a Dyer and A Simple Murder the latter of which was the winner of the Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award.Cradle to Grave is a good old fashioned mystery in the same vein of Agatha Christie’s famed who-dun-its. Set in a Shaker community in late 1800s readers are once again meet Will Rees, protagonist carried over from Kuhns’ first two novels. Rees and his new wife Lydia receive a letter from a dear friend who has found herself in trouble after taking a group of children from the home of a woman she deems an unfit mother. Once hearing of the situation the couple immediately set out in the dead of winter to help their friend Mouse in any way they can. When the woman Mouse kidnapped the children from is found murdered things get worse for Mouse as she is targeted for the murder. The allegations toward Mouse brings with it trouble for the Shaker community and has Rees, the burgeoning sleuth racing to find the killer and bring an end to the mayhem.Kuhns’ plot is well done. It flows between subplots seamlessly and is easy to follow. That coupled with the short chapters make Cradle to Grave a swift, enjoyable read. The characters are wonderfully written; from a surly curmudgeon, the odd preacher to the children who tug at your heartstrings, each is believable.Bottom line is if you’re looking for an enjoyable read for a day at the cottage or a gift for a dear friend you can’t go wrong with Cradle to Grave.Disclaimer: A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Very Exciting Novel about the Netherlands Struggle against Spanish Tyranny By Merrill Gee This is the second of Henty's books detailing the struggles the Protestants have fighting the machinations of Phillip II of Spain, Catharine De Medici and the Duke of Alva. These three have vowed to slaughter all the Protestants in Netherlands and France. Phillip has said that he will depopulate the Protestant portions of the Netherlands and resettle them with Spanish. To achieve this he sends his greatest general, the Duke of Alva to accomplish that goal. Henty, as usual, puts a young English lad (his term for the more current "teen-ager") in the midst of the fray. The book is very exciting. It is not quite as good (in my opinion, obviously) as the first book in the series, ST. Bartholomew's Eve, but I enjoyed it more than the last book in the series, By England's Aid.
