"I was thinking back to that day when I was at Seminary Ridge. I can still remember it clearly to this day. The bullets were flying all around me. Cannonballs were swooping past. I saw my cousin, George, killed right before my eyes. I ran with all my might, constantly firing. I followed Armistead over the wall. ….. The Federals were coming from everywhere. It was chaos. It was so loud from the bullets and cannons, but I think I was in shock because it seemed silent; everyone was running around, smoke was everywhere. Yet, I seemed numb, and then I fell to the ground. I felt a pain in my leg and looked down. There was blood gushing out of my leg! Oh, dear God, please don’t let me bleed to death! Then, they were upon me, my head was spinning, the bright sun caused a glare and I could not see faces. ..... " Excerpt from the book, Granddaddy Joe This chronicles the account of a young boy who, at the age of eighteen, went off to war to fight in the American Civil War. He was so young, why did he have to go? What led up to the war? His narrative gives detailed accounts of his early life’s experiences, the battles he fought in, and life in a Union prison. It brings to light a misunderstood aspect of a time in the South, which, up to this time, has not been articulated in a personal journal. Joseph Purvis grew up in the mountains of Virginia, before there was a West Virginia, and while the Western Frontier of the United States was being settled. It was a time when boys worked for their fathers on the farm and daughters helped their mothers with the canning and making butter and lard, as well as washing the clothes by hand. He experienced things and circumstances that we can only create in our minds as they no longer exist in our modern, technological age. He thought he had his life planned out; then the war changed everything. The things he valued most were to become clear to him. What about his future? That would be governed by the war. What about his family? Would he see them again? Would he live to marry and have a family? With his country and homeland torn apart in different directions, what would become of his beloved United States? What would become of his homeland of Virginia? He was tormented as everything seemed so uncertain. What things did he struggle with? What was foremost in his mind? What of dreams and promises? Would anyone know of him when all was said and done? You will note the charming lexis used back then is quite unlike how we express ourselves today. Joseph Purvis evolved just as surely as culture and education progressed.

About the Author Cheryl Oliver-Castor Dick grew up in northern Virginia. So close to Washington D.C. that the local news was also the national news. When she learned to read she would read books. Not just any books. Growing up she read Nancy Drew Mysteries, and the Hardy Boys, but her main interest was in stories written about history. As a small girl she would visit the Library of Congress with her grandmother, Alice Lee Simpson and would help her do research. The love for books grew when she saw how many books there were on the shelves on the main floor. That was not all of them. There were many stored on other floors that you had to request at the desk. She always wanted to be a writer. When an injury made it impossible to go to work, she picked up where she had left off writing several years before. She lives with her husband, Harvey II, step-son, Harvey III, daughter, Jennifer, and her Pomerania, Baby. They live in South Carolina, where she feels the beach is beautiful. If a hurricane were to come, she would quickly head for the hills. She works locally and writes in her free time, and considers herself a semi-professional gemologist, and professional genealogist. In the summer, she enjoys reading out on the deck and taking care of her garden. She and her family enjoy traveling to historic places, walking, hiking and camping. It reminds me so much of how my great grand parents talked when they were alive. A fascinating book full of history and suspense. I learned more from this book about the Civil War than I did in the history books in public schools. Seems the winner tells the stories the way they want them told and don't tell the whole truth.I really enjoyed following him and his life and discovering all that he went through and how it shows that life is constantly changing. Nothing will ever be the same.

Peterson Knowing Cheryl personally, I looked forward with great anticipation to this book. Any true Southerner, especially a Virginia will appreciate the charming dialect so peculiar to Virginia! A thought provoking account of her ancestor who shared in his journal the heights and depths of his emotions as he served as a mere boy in The Civil War. Heart-wrenching, suspenseful, and a real insight into the individual life of an ordinary boy caught up in a great drama that changed the United States of America. I would recommend this book to any Civil War, or Virginia history buff! Way to go Cheryl!

It was an easy read that follows an actual person in history. Gives the reader in sight into the life and battles of actual battles of the civil war. How life in a union POW camp was and how people survived. I am looking forward to the next segment she writes. Thank You.

Rome 44 BC. Caesar is dead - murdered by Marcus Brutus and his fellow conspirators. Mark Antony now holds power in Rome, through his position as consul and the legions under his command. Brutus has fled the capital, along with Cassius Longinus. Cicero is a shadow of the force he once was. The Senate are unable or unwilling to oppose Antony but Octavius, Caesar's heir, is daring to defy Rome's new dictator. Octavius - along with Marcus Agrippa and the centurion Lucius Oppius - must first negotiate the treacherous politics of the capital and then recruit an army, in order to defeat their enemies. War is inevitable. The fate of Rome will be decided on the battlefield rather than in the Forum. Caesar is dead. Long live Caesar. Augustus: Son of Caesar is the sequel to the bestselling historical novel Augustus: Son of Rome. Richard Foreman again assembles a cast of characters from history to produce a story full of insight, action and wit. A must-read for fans of Conn Iggulden, Simon Scarrow, Ben Kane and Plutarch. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. After a bad day in the senate for Julius Caesar, what happened next in Rome? By Dayle Smith Although much is known about his well known adoptive father Gaius Julius Caesar, in relative terms little is known about his successor, Octavian, better known in history as Caesar Augustus. By the time of Julius Caesar's death it could fairly be said that the ancient Republic had rotted from the Senate down, and that such rot was well settled in by the rule of the Consul's Marius and Sulla (before Sulla became a Dictator of Rome. While his father did do some violence to the ancient state of Republican Rome, it was a combination of Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus that set it on the path to survive for another 500 years in the western empire and for another 940 years in the eastern Roman empire, better known as the Byzantine Empire. But it was really just the one empire with many changes in colour and seat of power. Indeed Emperor Justinian, by hisbrilliant general Belisarius who reconquered Italy, for a time anyway.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Left me wanting meatier study materials By J. Wright Understand the Faith Study Bible from Christianity Today is an NIV translation of the Bible that seeks to include theology, history and devotional lessons throughout scripture. There are several things I look for when reviewing Bibles and this particular Bible is hit or miss across the board.First, the NIV is one of my preferred Bible translations for general use. There are other translations that suit other needs better, but for general use, the NIV proves more than adequate.Next, I look at the usability of the Bible. Bibles are big books and little things can make the difference between awesome and annoying. The paper book cover isn't going to last long, but thankfully, the publisher has made the hard back cover underneath aesthetically suitable. The print is a nice size between easily readable and small enough to not make a ginormous book. I like how the color red is used as an accent in the inserts and chapter titles. The pages are of a nice thickness, not too stiff, but also thick enough that you can highlight on them without making the other side of the page illegible.Lastly, I look at the extras included in the bible. There is a nice concordance at the end of the Bible. I like the subject index and glossary of theological terms at the end. Unfortunately, the insets are what miss repeatedly for me. In something called a "study Bible", I want a lot of facts and explanations. The historical people profiles do this well, but the theology insets were more like reading a devotional or a blog post than a useful teaching on theological topics. Many of them were utterly useless in that they stuck to very superficial understandings about things. There also seems to be an aversion to talking about the Holy Spirit. Even in topics such as The Trinity and The Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is only mentioned as an aside. The comparison tables between different theological stances sometimes seemed objective and sometimes seemed skewed. Also, there were many times that I felt the stances picked to look at weren't always the main stances people disagree on. Many of the stances chosen are obviously not scriptural. They often left me feeling cheated. This would be a good study Bible for someone just starting out in studying the Bible. If you have an intermediate understanding or higher, I think this Bible will leave you wanting.I was provided this book free of charge from the publisher in return for my honest opinion.

NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible: Grounding Your Beliefs in the Truth of Scripture By T R D The NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible is a new study Bible from Christianity Today and Zondervan. The NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible hardcover is sturdy and comes with a dust jacket. The cover image you see shows the dust cover image for the NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible. Underneath the dustcover, the hardcover is a full-coverage black/dark grey (with a linen texture look) - it simply says "Holy Bible" on the front cover and basic title/logos on the spine. The NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible has all black text (including the words of Christ) with red headings, laid out in two columns. This is the NIV version of the Bible (© 1973, 1978, 1984, & 2011). The text is standard size - not large, but not extra small. Although this is called a study Bible, it does not have study notes on each page like you might expect. The NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible does contain some basic footnotes.Where the "Study Bible" portions of this Bible come in are mainly through the book introductions, charts, graphs, and the articles/devotions: "Doctrine 101", "Everyday Faith", "Culture Connections", "Living Parables", and "Up For Debate".There are no maps like you might find in many Bibles. At the back of the NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible is a "Table of Weights and Measures", "Glossary of Theological Terms", "Subject Index", and a 150+ page concordance. With both a Bible and study tools in one, I find the NIV, Understand the Faith Study Bible to be a good value and a wonderful tool for our spiritual walk.FTC Declaration: The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book or advanced reading copy through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. This does not change the fact that I will give my honest opinion in my reviews.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not what I expected, but a good companion study aid. By Amy Talbott Understand the Faith Study Bible NIVThis study Bible was created by the editors from Christianity Today. It is packed full of lots of different resources. This book contains:An Alphabetical order of the books of the BibleEach book has it's own introductionSections called Doctrine 101 that teach the reader about fundamental points of doctrineEveryday Faith are small articles that help to connect the corresponding Bible passage with the doctrine it relates to.Cultural connections are other articles that give a cultural picture that helps to better understand the Bible passage.Living Parables are short articles found throughout the Bible that contain highlights from the lives of Christians who have gone before us.Up for Debate are viewpoints and issues that are often debated and disagreed upon within the Christian community but do not fall under key doctrines.Charts and graphsSubject IndexGlossary of terms that gives some solid definitions of doctrinal terms used throughout the articles within the Bible. The last section in this Bible is an extensive concordance that is over 150 pages in length. This study Bible is not what I picture when I am looking for a study bible. In many ways it falls closer to what I picture as a devotional Bible. Mainly because of the way this book is laid out. It is laid out similar to current devotional Bible today. But, this study Bible is packed full of foundational doctrines that are key for all believers to understand. This Bible has one of the largest concordances I have seen apart from my father's book that is just a concordance. The foundational doctrines that are found within the pages of this study Bible are very important elements that are important for all believers. My favorite element that this Bible has is the Living Parables sections that are scattered throughout the Bible itself. These articles focus on Christians that have really been foundational within the church yet many of us don't know their names or what they did that was so important. My least favorite element of this Bible is that there aren't concordance notes within the chapters themselves, and there is no commentary that corresponds within the chapters and verses. I prefer a study bible that has commentary that helps to expand more on the biblical passages that are being studied.Over all this is a good study Bible. I don't think it would be my primary source for study, but it does make a great companion for studying scripture.

Book Review for “Ghosts of Presque Isle” by Chris Chagnon By Chuck Boerger As a boy who grew up in Onaway (Chandlerville) I loved Chris’ first book, “The Dregs of Presque Isle” because it reminded me of the carefree life of growing up in a small town and the absolute freedom we had as young boys. As a friend and classmate of Chris’ older brother, Verdi, I can attest to most of the shenanigans that the heroes of this series were involved in because I was often right there with them. So I looked forward to reading Chris’ second effort, “The Ghosts of Presque Isle” and he absolutely didn’t disappoint in this thrilling historical fiction novel. I could certainly identify most of the characters as the story unfolded. His realistic descriptions of the physical and personality makeup of the main characters were very believable because, once again, I knew many of the actual people he was describing. Each of his characters was unique and interesting, flaws and all. The evil characters were truly evil in this classic tale of a fight between good and evil. The characters even used the distinctive dialog that was very common in that small, backward Northern Michigan town. I found myself easily transformed back 50 years ago as I read. Because I lived in Onaway (Chandlerville) from 1950 to 1965 I had no trouble following the action around the area: the factory ruins, the grove, the weeds, main street, Edna’s store, the old high school, the Tanks, etc. are all real places of the 50s and 60s era. The author’s great use of descriptive features put me right there in the scene of action. But, I believe someone who has never been in that Northern Michigan County could also draw a visible picture of the place because of Mr. Chagnon’s clear, descriptive detail. “Ghosts” starts out with the author developing background for his tale. However, the pace and complexity of the plot quickly grabs the readers’ attention. Mr. Chagnon takes real events and spins his fictional story around factual accounts. The reader is transformed into “Chris”, the main character, as he deals with the tragedies that surround him. By the time the author gets to the sinking of the Carl Bradley (Karl Bremen) very early in the book, I’m hooked. I remember crying at our dinner table on that 1958 November evening when my dad told our family of the sinking. Citizens of Onaway all knew men who worked on the Great Lakes ore carriers. My dad (a Lutheran Pastor) officiated at a few of the funerals and it was a sad time for the whole County. From that point on the main character’s visions foretell of more tragic events that are realized. “Ghosts” is a real page turner – I had my nose into it whenever I had a minute to read – and found it difficult to put it down. I even had dreams about it at night. The thrilling conclusion will surprise most of the readers and the author even surprises us with a little twist at the end of the book that entices me to want to read the third book of his trilogy. This novel is a must read for any avid historical fiction readers who want to get an accurate picture of what it was like growing up in a small Northern Michigan town.

He takes you back to your schooldays and you start to remember all the secret crushes you had and little petty arguments with your best friend. Then there is the dark dark secrets of the family that no one knows about and you don't dare tell for fear of the "Bundschuh" but that's a tale for another time. Throw in a dead body or two, a couple of evil men, and a ghost from the past and you have the ingredients of a damn fine mystery that keeps you on your toes and afraid to turn out the light at night. This is an exciting read and I'm looking forward to the tale continuing in the third book "Soldiers of Presque Isle."

Mr. Chagnons series of books, in his Chandlerville Chronicles, has me anxiously waiting for his third in the series to come out! A wonderful trip down memory lane, set in the 1950s, brought the charm of northern small towns and the suspenseful, and humorous exploits of teenage brothers and friends close to home of anyone who ever grew up. :-) The fact that the boy's father owns the local funeral home only made it more interesting. Add in a ghost trying to tell them something and you have a fun and fanciful story that's hard to resist.

Ray Moore has provided us with a delightful collection of engaging mysteries built around an intriguing, uniquely clever, low key --decidedly British --detective/vicar/wise elder. The Reverend Lyle Thorne, as revealed to us through his friend, Knowles, solves a variety of puzzling crimes, murders, and embedded riddles that keep the reader guessing and trying to keep ahead of Thorne's Dr. Watson-like "straight man", Inspector Cummings. If you are looking for a mystery with international terrorist plots and lots of gun-play, heroic/revenge violence (e.g., James Bond thrillers), this is not your choice. But, this refreshing, intelligent, thought provoking and down to earth series of stories can both entertain and challenge the reader as well as provide a setting that is charming and different for American readers, like me. The setting is also historical. ranging in time from the late 1800's through the late 1940's. I enthusiastically recommend this change of pace, smart set of short stories -- readable one at a time when one has a break for lunch or a chance for a desirable distraction; or the tales can of course be read one after the other for a variety of puzzles and intrigues. I especially liked the introductory quotations, from well known literary and other sources, that introduce each story and a theme that the story captures.

Here are five more tales about the investigative exploits of retired British clergyman, Lyle Thorne, narrated by Reginald Knowles, his associate in the church and assistant in pinpointing the perpetrating criminal. If you've read any of the previous four collections, you'll find these mysteries equally enthralling. If you're about to discover this intriguing, voluntary sleuth for the first time, you're opening yourself to becoming a fan who'll want the entire collection. Thorne's success lies in his exceptional ability to see what others don't, to exclude the irrelevant, and maximize the rational power of the human mind. In this fashion, the criminal is put to a disadvantage. Here is reading that entertains as it informs and enlightens.

In his elderly years By Dianne Fancher Final Investigations of the Reverend Lyle Throne is another book in a series that continues to provide interesting reading to those who like mysteries. In his elderly years, due to his well deserved reputation, Reverend Thorne is still approached to help with cases when the solution is elusive to the local inspector. More background is revealed about a supporting character, Reginald Knowles, that helps the reader appreciate his important role in the content of these cases being passed on years after the Reverend Thorne was involved. The reader will continue to be in awe of Reverend Thorne's keen observation abilities, especially when we miss the significance of information that he always seems to notice.David Fancher

This is a part factual-part fictional story set sixty-five million years ago in what is now Alberta during the Age of Dinosaurs which centres around the small but highly intelligent predator, Bladefoot. Bladefoot is a Troodon, a distant cousin of the more famous Velociraptor. Bladefoot must depart from his parent’s territory before they turn against him whilst both confronting his long time rival Cutter and avoiding his rival pack whenever possible. Once he leaves his dwindling sanctuary, he must also evade viscous, bloodthirsty predators that thunder across the land, avoid the attentions of giant crocodiles that lurk beneath the apparent still freshwaters, learn to co-exist with volatile armoured herbivores and live under the shadow of an angry Earth if he is to succeed his mission of finding his own home range and a female companion to start a family. During his quest, Bladefoot will face many different environments, from steaming jungles, volcanic highlands, vast fern prairies, deadly swamps and the coastline of an ocean filled with killers. For Bladefoot, failure is not an option if he is to pass on his genes to the next generation. The tale also focuses on other dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Sky Rider the Quetzalcoatlus, Lord and Master of the Cretaceous skies. ThunderBlade and Stan, the Tyrannosaurus Rex parents, who rule their territory with fear and blood whilst providing good parental care for their chicks. Rumble the Triceratops who has great ambitions amongst his herd. The novel is based on the latest scientific evidence, contains many species from prehistory not well known, and is a 'must-have' for a book collection of any dinosaur lover.

The author has a firm foundation in the science of paleontology, although a few of his explanations at the end of the booking he appendix have been proven differently by scientific scrutiny. The main challenge to readers is the very frequent spelling errors, including the use of the wrong word in certain sentences. His grammar is often compromised. The overall writing style reminds one of a high school essay.I am surprised by this, as the educational system I the UK (where the author is from) is not in such an abysmal state as in the USA, where high school graduates Cerberus turned out relatively uneducated. Ithinkifthe author had a good spell checker and grammar correcting activated I his work processing program, much of what was disappointing in this book would no longer be an issue.

This riveting tale is perfect for readers of sensitive love stories, history buffs, and those seeking a good yarn. Julian Nava is a retired professor of history, a writer of school texts, a global traveler and former U.S. ambassador whose novel weaves confidential political facts into this intriguing story of young love in a troubled Tibet the author came to know first-hand. Every day life and customs in Tibet and Nepal are portrayed as three related love stories show the complexity of personal feelings in difficult circumstances that demand survival skills as China forces changes on an ancient Buddhist society. In the novel an old Chinese professor tells how world powers, the United Nations, and the United States are deeply involved as life changes in Tibet when the Dalai Lama flees to India. Factual, and formerly highly secret, negotiations between President Nixon and Chairman Mao are woven into the story, as the author lets out data he learned as ambassador. The story is all the more timely with the recent tragic earthquakes in Nepal. Enjoy.

It’s an enjoyable and informative read By Kirk “This historically accurate novel, set in the period when China occupied Tibet, is a veritable “tour de force.” As a world traveler and former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Nava has woven a tale reminiscent of Boris Pasternak’s “ Doctor Zhivago,” in its breadth, but without its length. It’s an enjoyable and informative read.” Sorab K. Ghandi, CAP Professor Emeritus Rensselaer Polytechnic

By Waheed Rabbani In 1962, in Cambridgeshire, England, sixteen-year-old Maggie is driving with her parents, from their country manor, to go shopping in London. The spoiled and only child of her affluent parents, she has another heated argument with her mother about Ruby, her mother’s best friend. When her mother, who is driving, rubber-necks to admonish Maggie, the car leaves the road and rolls over. While Maggie survives, her parents die in the accident. It’s no surprise to Maggie that her parents’ will appoints Ruby and her husband, Johnnie, as Maggie’s guardians. She’s removed from her comfortable home and friends to Southend. Maggie is perplexed that Ruby is also a beneficiary to half of her parents’ fortune; Maggie would receive her share only when she is twenty-one. Although informed about a family secret, Maggie doesn’t quite believe it and thinks Ruby is snatching her inheritance. Maggie, wanting to be a singer, is lured to London by her boyfriend’s father, a music agent, who promises to help her recover all her parents’ riches. But he has ulterior motives for assisting the attractive teenager. Learning of Maggie’s disappearance places Ruby and Johnnie in a quandary, hoping they aren’t too late to save her. While this novel is a follow-up to Marie Maxwell’s two earlier books (Gracie and Ruby), it doesn’t read like a sequel. Maggie is determined to follow her mind, and that includes snaring the boy of her dreams. While that might not be unusual, when she also desires and takes extraordinary steps to recoup her inaccessible wealth, and to become a vocalist, she seems older than just sixteen. However, Maxwell has penned an appealing story of a rebellious, self-destructive teenager in an unusual situation. The novel is a “gripping saga,” true to its subtitle, with wonderful dialogue, taking place in the evocative settings of London and its environs. Recommended.Waheed Rabbani is a historical fiction author, whose books are available on Amazon and elsewhere. This review first appeared in the Historical Novels Review Issue 72 (May 2015)

By Eric A few weeks back I read Grumpy Old Wizards written by John O’Riley and became hooked on his writing style. This book takes place after Grumpy Old Wizards and is full of more adventures and excitement. I absolutely love Josephine’s character as she reminds me of my own grandma. Here you have an old lady who looks and acts younger than she is. Stubborn and full of crazy energy and a one of a kind personality. The characters are well developed and a great mix of humor exist within the story. I admire how the author took the time to write a mystery/sci-fi/crime with a hint of comedy, it is not easy to pull off. Light Energy is full of unpredictable twist and turns that kept me on the edge of my chair and hungry for more. Thank you for the great story, I look forward to reading more books by O’Riley.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting - but frustrating By Amazon Customer I found myself frustrated over the characters' lack of ability to defend themselves - over and over. First they are strong, then they're not - literally sentences apart. If they are such hot-shot advanced wizards, I'd like to think they could last a little longer in a fight. Writing is still clunky.I still like the characters - just want them to actually grow and learn better and not have the exact same setbacks with every encounter.

Accompanied by her older yet more fainthearted sister, she is forced to quickly grow up and come to terms with what is more important to her-her dream of owning her own land and being a homesteader or marrying the man she falls in love with along the way. Jean, with her husband, resides in California in the Silicon Valley. Together they have two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. In addition to her love for writing, she is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice. Her grandparents were homesteaders in the early twentieth century. Jean's fascination with the Wild West, homesteaders, their lives, their struggles and victories won emanates from the many stories she heard as a youngster and her life experiences growing up in Montana.

Because I knew the third book isn't out yet and I couldn't put this book down. This is an excellent book. The writing style is a bit abrupt but once you get into the story it is a page turner. Really enjoying the progression of the inventions and technological breakthroughs. Not that many stories let you walk through the steps of a societal advancement. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy this series.

Bad old translation By Shaman I don't know why such a weak old translation remains in print given the excellent more recent ones by folks who actually read, speak, and understand current K'iche' Maya and who also have the translators' tools for historical work. This translation is based on a one hundred-year-old French translation that was full of errors. Get Tedlock's prize-winning translation instead.

Hobbs Much, of course, has been written about ancient Egypt in non-fiction and in the past two decades an increasing interest in the fictional world of Egypt has spawned a number of excellent novels, especially mysteries. Allen Drury's "A God Against the Gods," published in 1976--timed well with the King Tut craze associated with the world tour of the late king's funeral treasures--undoubtedly is the "father" of this subject/genre. And well it should. Drury takes the time of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, some 3300 years ago, and proceeds to tell the story of this "horse-faced" king, husband to the beautiful Nefertiti and brother to the young King Tut. The time of the pharaoh is rife with struggle--and plenty of problems. Against the advice of many of his advisers, Akhenaten proceeds to change the Egyptian theological concept of multi-gods into a monotheistic concept. Needless to say, this does not go well with his subjects. Changing the tenor of the religion, however, is only one concern Akhenaten faces. With Drury's renowned patience for detail and historical research, the novel examines the numerous aspects of the pharaoh's life, especially his relationship with Nefertiti and of his zeal to produce an heir. He doesn't, of course, and therein lies many of his problems. "(Akhenaten) was perhaps the most human and touching of all the Pharoahs, for he greatly tried, and greatly failed, to bring to humanity a universal symbol of love." And it is the trials--and these failures--so poignantly presented that makes this book well worth the read, not just to Egyptologists, but to the layperson as well. Granted, not all authorities agree on Drury's interpretations (Drury points that out in his introduction), but the author's research and theories are academically acceptable, although there is disagreement in familial structure, relationships, pronunciations/spelling that experts may (or may not) recognize. Regardless, Drury's skill as an outstanding author carry the book along at an amazingly fast pace--almost if you were riding the current of the Nile itself. "Fascinating" is, indeed, an apt description of this book.(Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

By David Zampino The late Pulitzer Prize winning author Allen Drury in this novel, (and its sequel, "Return to Thebes") moves radically away from the genre which made him famous (the Washington Political Novel), and shares with his readers an historical novel based on the events of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt -- when the concept of monotheism was (possibly) first seriously considered. Readers of Drury's political novels will recognize his characteristic style of writing, character portrayal, and the like -- but the subject is one totally foreign to most Americans. Drury makes it come alive.I have no idea what possessed Mr. Drury to write this novel -- but I'm glad that he did.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. While sometimes slow, it was often excellent. By A Customer I cannot say that I enjoyed A God Against the Gods as much as I did Return to Thebes. Indeed, I came close to giving up at several points in this book. But, when Drury is good, he is very good. At the critical times during this book, such as Akhenaten's founding of Akhetaten's altar. His descriptions are always excellent, and his historical accuracy is unquestionable. I did feel a connection to the characters, although Drury's style made me feel as if I was reading letters that they were sending me. He puts the treader on an equal level with the characters, and does not talk down to the reader. To Jeffrey Li, I must ask, "If this book was so bad, why did you read the sequel?"

Based on factual events and endorsed by a Houston meteorologist, Thompson blends the facts known regarding the hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas in 1900 with the fictional lives of compelling characters to create a book that will live on long after you finish reading the last page.If you love history, Galveston, or just want a great story, this is your book!

Lott I'm a survivor of Hurricane Camille of 1969, that tore through Gulfport, MS in 1969 and the worst storm to hit the US Mainland. So I couldn't wait to read Thompson's Hurricane. Instantly I was drawn into her fictional story of the historical and devastating storm of 1900, that hit the island of Galveston, Texas. Thompson vividly portrays the catastrophic and devastating effects on human life and property in sharp contrast to hope, survival and faith. I read this book this past weekend, while in Mobile, AL with the threat of tropical storm Arlene in the background, so it was perfect reading material.Drama and well developed characters tell the unfolding story of death and triumph as the storm moves into the gulf with such impact, that lives on the island are changed forever. I could almost taste the salt water, feel the roaring wind and slashing rain, so accurately described by Thompson, a native Texan. Though 6,000 people lost their lives in this terrible hurricane, many found strength and compassion to help their fellow islanders, and selfishly give of themselves, even in their own despair. This well crafted, minute by minute story, will pull at your heartstrings and make you say a prayer for every storm that enters your life. I highly reccommend it.

Merritt Sometimes our humble beginnings-the ones we can't wait to get away from-are the ones we're inevitably drawn back to. So is the case for successful newspaperman Brent Murphy when he becomes disenchanted with the fast pace of New York City and returns to his hometown Island of Galveston. His return coincides with an event of catastrophic proportions, the 1900 Galveston hurricane.Mrs. Thompson, a native Texan, has crafted an engrossing tale of tragedy, sadness, courage, and most importantly, hope. Experience one of this country's most talked about storms through the eyes of these well-developed characters. You will cheer for their bravery and cry over their loss. A wonderful tribute to the victims of the 1900 Galveston hurricane. A great read. Highly recommend.
