“Love and death in the time of Siege... Even today, 451 years after the four terrible months that almost wrested Malta out of its European context and yanked it back into the Muslim world, the allure of the Great Siege of 1565 lives on, and not just in the local collective memory...The Course of Fortune is a good read which gives a reliable version of the events of the siege and should provide many hours of pleasant reading.” ―Louis J. Scerri, author of Malta: Origini Della Civilta Mediterranea/ Malta: Origins of Mediterranean Civilization In three volumes, The Course of Fortune ―A Novel of the Great Siege of Malta, follows the adventures of a young Spanish soldier-of-fortune Francisco de Barai over the course of fifteen of the most turbulent years in the most turbulent century in history, adventures that climax in the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. During that most momentous of all sieges, tens of thousands of Turks descend on the island, defended by some 600 Knights of Malta and another few thousand mercenaries and Maltese civilians. The horrific and heroic events are recounted with the utmost attention to historical accuracy, just as the entire escalating chain of events is played out against a finely researched tapestry of Renaissance values, superstitions and culture. Tony Rothman is a physicist and writer. He received a B.A. in physics from Swarthmore College in 1975, and a Ph.D. from the Center for Relativity at the University of Texas, Austin in 1981. After leaving Texas, he did post-doctoral work at Oxford, Moscow and Cape Town. Rothman’s scientific research has been in cosmology, the study of the early universe, and he has authored approximately sixty scientific papers on that subject. He has taught physics at Princeton, Harvard and elsewhere. Apart from his scientific work, Rothman is the author of eleven books, both fiction and nonfiction. The most recent is Firebird, a scientific suspense novel concerning a race for nuclear fusion (Wildside Press, 2015). He has also authored seven plays, contributes to a number of national magazines, including Scientific American and Discover, and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Thankfully, Rothman's ease for prose and skill with rhythm and language cushion the shocking horrors of events detailed in this quintessential work on one of the turning points of early modern history.Would make a great series or movie.

From Plot Your Way to Publication: William Simon on March 27, 2009 Format: Paperback Verified Purchase I am very pleased with this one. As another reviewer commented, yes, it has many blank forms to use, but that's the point! Fill in the blanks, plot your novel, stay on course. Every writer is different, and works differently, but I personally am finiding the book to be a great help! By Brian Campbell on January 19, 2009 Format: Paperback I've tried to put together a coherent plot with index cards as I'd been taught, only to have my living room floor covered with them and I still had trouble knowing where they should go. Thanks to Ms Hill's book and her charts, I can now sit at my computer or the kitchen table and plot my entire book. My wife is happy to have the living room back! I'd recommend this to any writer and especially to aspiring writers. By Sandra Owens on March 27, 2009 Format: Paperback Reading a portion of Brenda Hill's amazing book got me excited all over again about writing! I can't wait until I receive my own copy. Thinking about characters and plot lines. Not judging it, but throwing it all out there and letting your imagination run wild. There's always time to reign all those thoughts in later and give them structure, but Brenda captured the sheer joy of putting thoughts/ideas/dreams on paper. If I didn't already love writing, I'd want to try it because she makes it seem like a wonderful adventure rather than a dull chore. This Book will be Your Best Friend! By Nancy A. Review What Amazon Readers Are Saying: "Beautifully broken.""A delicious descent into dark obsession.""...captivates and entices.""A passionate novel... lush and atmospheric." -- Kirkus Reviews

From the Author The Gothic novel is said to have been invented by Horace Walpole with The Castle of Otranto, a delicious concoction of fiction, horror, death and romanticism. According to Walpole, he wanted to combine elements of the medieval romance, which he deemed too fanciful, and the modern novel, which he found too confined to strict realism. While I'm aware that centuries later, I won't be inventing any new genres, I aspired to do something similar when I wrote Kiss the Stars -- combine elements of modern paranormal fantasy with elements of vintage Gothic romance. I hope you enjoy it.

From the Inside Flap I could only act on instinct. If I stayed here, I would die.I knew how it would happen, had always known. I would simply stopbreathing. It would happen when I was all alone. It would happen because I was all alone with no one to resuscitate me. So I had to keep moving.I didn't like finding my torn dress on the floor. Why had I carried itdown from the attic only to leave it out in plain sight, like evidence? I picked it up, intending to throw it away but the wastebasket in thebathroom was overflowing with tissues and Q-tips and last month's usedhair dye kit.Outside, the wind howled. Keep moving.I decided to go up to the attic. Clothes littered the floor there too.The bed was a disaster with the mosquito net half down, blood on thesheets. My mother's hope chest had been plundered. I vaguely rememberedbeing the one who plundered it. There was something up here I needed. My gaze darted from one thing to the next, until I saw the knife on thefloor where Devon had cast it. A knife would be handy, much handier than a gun.It was pretty with its ivory handle. I touched my fingerto the sharp edge. How would I carry it? I considered strapping it to my thigh with a garter belt but it wasn't the right size. I didn't want to think about it too much because it was insane to be wondering how toconceal a steak knife. But it was good to have a weapon, I thought, since I couldn't stay in the house and everyone knew storms brought outthe crazies.Or was it the full moon? A lunar eclipse? The stroke of midnight? I checked my watch. 11:59.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Tender, evocative and Beautifully Broken By FireDancer Gothic is not my genre, but I took a chance on this book after a friend recommended it and how glad am I that I did?Miss Bell's haunting prose captivates, teases and entices in equal measure as this tender meeting of two broken souls plays out one of the most compelling romances I've read for a while. The erotic scenes are made that much more potent by her delicate hand - they steam and tantalise without degenerating into the not-so-soft porn of so many modern books. My initial reaction to Devon was "arrogant swine," but I warmed to him. Ruby is a complex, fragile creature who (if she were real) I suspect I would find myself wanting to slap occasionally, but the fact that she became that real for me is down to the author's sublime characterisation skills. Every player was credible and elicited the desired reaction from me - I loved the ones I was meant to love and hated the ones I was meant to hate. Each one of them was beautifully drawn and spoke with a different voice - a rare talent.Every so often there is a line of pure artistry, "I was struck by the sheer blue of the sky. It was a color so pure, it made my soul feel like a physical entity that could be caressed." That and the character's excellent taste in music resonated strongly with me. I shall be tapping my foot impatiently, waiting for the next story from this new talent. There were a couple of teeny tiny glitches for me, making this a 9 out of 10, but on balance, I Loved It!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Compelling Novel with Irresistible Characters Written in Gorgeous Prose By Will Ryan I think (meaning my opinion only) the quality of a novel can be judged by three attributes: (1) Does the author bring you wholly into the dream of the story, make the characters so vivid and real you begin to think of them as friends or lovers, people known intimately and loved or loathed; (2) Is the quality of the writing, the author’s individualism and invention beautiful, compelling, and fresh?; and (3) Does the story stay with you. Do you end the novel with a sense of loss, a tinge of grief at knowing it’s over and you’ll now have to part with the places and people of the book?Alice Bell’s “Kiss the Stars” succeeds brilliantly in all of these areas. The story is told in chapters that alternate the voices of Ruby Rain, a compellingly vulnerable, irrepressibly attractive, deliciously eccentric young high school teacher, and Devon, a dark and mysterious young man who is himself fascinating and is fascinated with Ruby. They’re both people who are vulnerable yet courageous, uncomfortable in the roles they have and assume yet persistent and engaging. The prose is elegant, succinct yet moving, every word a whisper, every sentence a kiss. The story, too, is so engaging, so startling and innovative every page is a new discovery, a new wonder, a new adventure in the lives and thinking of Ruby and Devon.I can’t say too much about the plot without giving it away, so I won’t. I will say this much, I began reading the book one afternoon, had to stop, returned to it the next day and put everything aside to finish it. When I finally did finish, late in the evening, the white light of a street lamp bathing my library, I felt that grief, that loss at coming to the end one only feels from a novel of extraordinary quality. Ruby stays with you, the mysteries of Devon’s past and his uncertain future remain curious and unresolved, and you wish you could meet them, whisper a few small words, and tell them of how they now reside in your heart, affect your thinking, challenge and change your perceptions.Buy the book. Read it. Love it. Tell your friends. Five glorious stars for a beautifully executed book that deserves its own constellation.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Sexy Page-turner By dreamweaver I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I found it a quick read because the writing is smooth and the story itself was quite gripping. Very different from what I'm used to reading. The plot moves at a fast pace. There are 2 points of view, which sometimes I don't like. But it worked here because the main characters - Devon Slaughter and Ruby Rain - are so opposite. She feels too much and he doesn't feel at all! He can't manufacture his own emotions so he steals emotions from other people. Ruby has a lot of pain, which is what draws him to her, and the internal conflict of both characters keeps you turning pages. I began to feel scared for Ruby, early on. And the suspense doesn't let up. I think what I liked the most was that you don't know what Devon is going to do to Ruby and you don't want to like him but you can't help it. He is sexy and often funny, especially when Ruby brings him closer to his own human emotions. Right up to the end, I could not imagine how it would play out. Now, I'm looking forward to the sequel, but I must say, I am relieved the book didn't end on a cliff-hanger. I actually loved the ending and that makes me want to buy the next book more than a cliff-hanger would.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. When finding herself in a strange land like something out of a Celtic fairytale By Heather Lauren is sassy and brassy on the outside, yet anxious and filled with fear on the inside. Her wit will make you laugh while her inner turmoil brings you to tears. I’ll admit sometimes, I wanted to smack our protagonist upside the head, but soon after I’d find myself just wanting to give her a hug and tell her everything’s going be okay. When finding herself in a strange land like something out of a Celtic fairytale, Lauren remains very real. A modern, twenty-first century gal in a very unmodern world (even calling the bad guy a dill-weed at one point) is funny, folks. Truly entertaining. The author does a great job swirling two completely different worlds into one perfect chocolatey-vanilla-y treat. Conflicting conflict. Unparalleled parallels.Yet, when the banter ceases, Lauren is forced to journey into a place even more disturbing than fire-breathing monsters and wicked kings. And true bad-ass-chick heroism is found when she looks her own fears and weakness dead in the eye and walks boldly through the pain.Ms. Evans, take a bow… This is a great piece of work!Dig in, folks. You’re gonna love it!!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. and it didn't disappoint. The world where it takes place is both ... By Elizabeth A Fiedler I was so excited to read this book, and it didn't disappoint. The world where it takes place is both familiar and strange; the characters are nuanced and easy to identify with. The plot is not your clichéd dragon-and-maiden story at all, which is not to say the dragon isn't scary and wonderful. It's much more of a psychological suspense story than I was expecting, and I couldn't put it down. The emotional development of the main characters happens under the intimate hand of a very empathetic narrator; it's the turmoil and eventual peace in their interior lives that really make this a wonderful read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Pint of Ice Cream for your Soul (No Spoilers) By EM Sky I love this book, and I love this character. Let’s just start there. I could say the book is a triumph (which it is), or that it’s a tour de force (which is just French for triumph), but that wouldn’t mean anything personal to YOU, the next potential reader, so in honor of our heroine, Lauren Dailey, let’s just be real and cut to the chase: this book is a pint of ice cream for your soul.If you’re looking for a new character to be the very best friend you never had, to help you forget about your own life for a few magical hours and then inspire you to get up and move forward, because if she can do it, you can do it, this is the one.I fell in love with the main character from the moment I met her, I empathized with her problems (you see what I did there?), and she never let me down. Not once. Not even when she probably thought she was letting me down. (You’ll get it once you get to know her.)And here’s the best part: she’s real.Lauren Dailey is not your typical fantasy character. She’s complicated. She’s struggling, and she’s frustrated that she’s struggling, and sometimes she even hates herself for it, and yet she always does her best to keep pushing through anyway, even when it involves a fire-breathing dragon. You have to love that about her. There is a solid romantic sub-plot, which has its requisite steamy moments but that in the end (trust me, no spoilers) made me want to cheer in a way that very few romantic sub-plots ever have. In many ways, it’s a book about what love really is, rather than what it pretends to be, which had me laughing more than once and left me feeling far more fulfilled than the alternative.I celebrate this character at forty-something in a way that says I wish I had had her around during my twenties or thirties to smack me over the head. Where most fantasy books leave you sorry to come back to reality, this one leaves you—well, yes, ok, sorry it’s over, certainly, but somehow more ready to handle whatever reality is yours to come back to, nonetheless. And really, what more could you ask for from a fantasy novel than that?

Paul Granby, a successful historical author who has carved a niche for himself as a defender of history’s outcasts, undertakes an assignment to write a book about a mysterious person whose identity will not be revealed until a subsequent face-to-face meeting. What follows is a suspenseful secret journey in Europe and a stunning confrontation with a Nazi leader in hiding and the outpouring of historical information relating to the period between 1918 and 1945 that has never before been presented in the same context and manner in published texts dealing with the Nazi regime.

"The Last Nazi" -- Comparable (possibly exceeding) some works of Michener, Wouk and le Carre By Mark Tolland Review "The Last Nazi"A surprising historical tour de force…As a professor of history (U.S., Western, and World Civilizations), I purchased "The Last Nazi" as what I thought would be a light summer read. I enjoy the genre of historical novels, but was wholly unprepared for the scale of historical verisimilitude that Tortolani recreates and employs in his writing. While other authors in this genre may tend to subsume historical facts in favor of their agenda of a fictitious novel and storytelling, this author almost reverses the formula, with dramatic success.Tortolani’s "The Last Nazi" has all of the emotional impact of the sagas of Michener and Wouk. (Ironically, it appears that all three authors served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Fleet). Beyond that comparison, "Last Nazi" possesses all the key literary elements and (intrigue, plot twists, shady characters, etc.) of John le Carre’s popular historical-based spy fiction novels. However, what truly distinguishes THIS historical novel, is Tortolani’s mastery of historical details and facts. I was tempted to think that this was an historian (doubtlessly a lover of history itself) who was looking or a vehicle to apply a knowledge that is both broad and deep. It is a rare work that can actually entertain and inform to this high of a level. The range of information woven into this work is truly impressive: from U.S. history, to WWII Europe, Asia, and even to the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts of the Middle East. While a highly enjoyable read (complete with plot twists, surprising love interests, and detailed characters and scenery), it is also a book that that challenges set beliefs--all without resorting to unwelcome revisionist historical debasement of fact.History lessons aside, Tortolani’s writing is also extremely inviting as a novel, and I found it to be equally moving in parts. (The subtitle, "A Tale of Passion and Sorrow," is well earned in this case, especially for me as I got to the final “Epilogue”). If one gets past the occasional long-sentence structure he employs at points to weave together varied thoughts and facts, the reward is a book that is fun, moving, enjoyable, accessible, riveting, and highly informative. (Yes…even to a history professor!).Michael Tori, Ph.D.Division of Global StudiesState University of New York at Orangemichaeltori@sunyorange.edu

Orion Pozo The Poniard's Hilt; or, Karadeucq and Ronan: A Tale of Bagauders and Vagres by Eugene Sue is the sixth book of Eugene Sue's 21 volume series The Mysteries of the People; or History of a Proletarian Family Across the Age. The series was created to be a European history that depicts the struggle between the ruling and the ruled classes. One family, the descendants of a Gallic chief named Joel, represent the oppressed and the descendants of a Frankish chief Neroweg, typifies the oppressors. Down through the ages the successive struggles between oppressors and oppressed are depicted as each generation of Joel's family writes the story of their lives and adds it to the collective story gathered so far.The Poniard's Hilt takes place in the 6th century CE just after the invasion of Gaul by Clovis and his Frankish tribes. Clovis embraces Christianity, but also uses intrigue and wars to build what we now know as the Merovingian dynasty. This combination of conquest, Christianity, and corruption lays waste to the lands and the people of Gaul. Local priests and lords pillage the land, stealing from the people and each other to amass their wealth and power. As a response to the crushing domination of this combination of church and state, small groups of Gallic peasants, gathering together in the forests in rebellious bands called Bagauders and Vagres, resort to guerrilla counterattacks. Karadeucq and his son Ronan are descendants of Joel, and this tale is told as if it were written down by Ronan, a brave and boastful brigand.Ronan's group of Vagres takes revenge on the local bishop by burning and looting his home and freeing his servants. Bishop Cautin seeks help from the local Frankish lord Count Neroweg and his troops who kill or capture the Vagres. Karadeucq, a Bagauder disguised as a travelling performer, comes to Neroweg's castle to free his son. The tale is written as if told by the youthful Ronan who glorifies the life of the forest rebel and vilifies the court life based on pillage and enslavement of the local Gauls. The modern reader can see Ronan as a French Robin Hood who takes from the rich plunderers and distributes it back to the oppressed. The poniard (also spelled poignard) of the title is a long thin knife used for thrusting that is passed on to Ronan by his brother that contains three words engraved in its hilt. Two are the Gallic words Friendship and Community, but the third was a Saxon word new to him - Ghilde. When Ronan asks the meaning, he is told that a Ghilde is an association of men owing solidarity to each other. It is through the forming of a community of workers that this story ends to be picked up in book seven of the series: The Branding Needle; or, The Monastery of Charolles: A Tale of the First Communal Charter.

Dedicated and competent nurse preceptors are vital to the success of health care organizations and to the retention of nurses in the profession. Yet clinical teaching and supervision are skills that must be developed; a knowledgeable and experienced practitioner does not automatically become a successful nurse preceptor. This pithy reference guide for nurses in the preceptor role is brimming with information about how to successfully educate, protect, socialize, and evaluate nurses transitioning into a new environment. In an easy-access, bulleted format, this resource helps preceptors establish clinical objectives, execute evaluation and feedback techniques, identify role responsibilities, develop positive communication skills, and develop effective teaching/learning strategies.

The guide addresses the qualities of a good preceptor, communication and delegation skills, and the importance of evidence-based practice for the preceptor role. It discusses how to prepare new nurses for the reality shock of entering a new arena, and how to recognize and help the preceptee who is struggling. Nurse preceptors will gain insight into how to assist preceptees in organizing their clinical day and prioritizing their responsibilities. From suggestions in conflict resolution and bullying, to aids in developing critical thinking skills, to advice on completing relevant documentation, this guide helps new nurse preceptors provide a well-orchestrated orientation that will ensure a positive experience for novice nurses and the subsequent delivery of quality, patient-centered care. The information though, is presented in a relaxed, conversational way that is easy to read, yet still informs the reader of the basics that they need to raise chickens. The book also has vibrant, color pictures of the author's chickens and the coop she created.

“Tuck is a genius.”—Los Angeles Book ReviewLily Tuck has had a wonderful and accomplished career as a National Book Award winning novelist, story writer, essayist and biographer. She is one of our most distinguished contributors to American literature. With The Double Life of Liliane, Tuck writes what may well be her crowning achievement to date, and, significantly too, her most autobiographical work.As the child of a German movie producer father who lives in Italy and a beautiful, artistically talented mother who resides in New York, Liliane’s life is divided between those two very different worlds. A shy and observant only child with a vivid imagination, Liliane uncovers the stories of family members as diverse as Moses Mendelssohn, Mary Queen of Scots and an early Mexican adventurer, and pieces together their vivid histories, through both World Wars and across continents. What unfolds is an astonishing and riveting metanarrative: an exploration of self, humanity, and family in the manner of W.G. Sebald and Karl Ove Knausgaard. Told with Tuck’s inimitable elegance and peppered with documents, photos, and a rich and varied array of characters, The Double Life of Liliane is an intimate and poignant coming of age portrait of the writer as a young woman.

DOUBLE TALK By little lady blue Book blurb states: “A brilliant blend of fact and fiction.”Only if the author intended the reader not to know which is which can it be described as ‘brilliant.’It skips and jumps time and place. A bit of history and a bit of a travelogue, but ultimately not a whole lot about Liliane. If this is supposed to be even a little bit biographical it does not feel so.Photographs with no captions are not all that interesting when the reader is left to try and match them with the narrative. The writing may very well be ‘brilliant’ but one would have to have a burning desire to make sense of it all to expend the energy to ferret out the meaning.I’ll just Google Lily Tuck and save myself the headache.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An evocative blend of memoir, history, and fiction By Bookreporter Lily Tuck’s previous fiction, including her National Book Award-winning THE NEWS FROM PARAGUAY, has been praised for its clarity of prose, insight into characters, and elegant explorations of universal themes. She’s also written two collections of short stories as well as a biography of Elsa Morante, a significant Italian writer of the early 20th century. All these elements serve Tuck very well as she crafts her latest work, THE DOUBLE LIFE OF LILIANE, an evocative blend of memoir, history and fiction.Everything in THE DOUBLE LIFE OF LILIANE, which traces the childhood and young adulthood of its title character, leads up to the course on French poetry that Liliane takes at Harvard with the literary critic Paul de Man. Liliane is the only undergraduate in the course and one of the few women (uncoincidentally, a 2014 biography of Paul de Man was titled THE DOUBLE LIFE OF PAUL DE MAN). De Man poses a series of questions to his students: “How does one distinguish literary language from ordinary language? And when does journalism become literature and when does memoir become literary?”These questions are also at the heart of Tuck’s narrative, which seamlessly blends a literary narrative structure with a memoir-like personal narrative based on details from her own life (although recounted in the third person) and the techniques of journalism. And the whole story is told in an almost clinically dispassionate tone, more like a history book than a novel. Events in Liliane’s life --- even quite disruptive ones such as her father’s death or her mother’s overdose on sleeping pills --- are narrated matter-of-factly, interwoven with research, family history or science. The first half of the book is largely composed of meditations on the various twisted branches of Liliane’s family tree, her connections to predecessors as various as the monarch Mary Queen of Scots and the Jewish scholar Moses Mendelssohn. Liliane herself was born in the late 1930s and spent much of her childhood on the move, fleeing her childhood home in Paris at the start of World War II and finally dividing her time as a teenager between her mother and stepfather’s home in New York City and Italy, where her father was a film producer. The specter of the war and particularly of the Holocaust runs throughout THE DOUBLE LIFE OF LILIANE. References to tragedies large and small run through its pages, too, often in the form of flash-forwards to incidental characters’ tragic and often violent deaths. Although the narrator maintains a quite deliberate emotional detachment from these events, the cumulative effect is one of melancholy, of losses both distant and more closely held.On the surface, one might expect that the book’s title refers to Liliane’s feeling of being split in two by virtue of spending two very different childhoods, one with her father in Italy and one with her mother in New York and Maine. But again, that pivotal course with Paul de Man, which culminates the book, hints at a different meaning for the title, referring to “the writing ‘I’ and the written ‘I’”. Is the writer identical to her subject? Or, by virtue of narrating her experience and everything that ripples out from it, is she creating a different version of herself? These kinds of provocative questions will preoccupy readers both while they immerse themselves in Liliane’s story and long afterwards.Reviewed by Norah Piehl

By merle This coming of age story of Liliane is entwined between the real life of Lily Tuck and the imagined life of Liliane. Traveling between her divorced parents, Liliane experiences growing up with ballet and her mother and step father, Gaby in New York and visiting her father in Rome. She travels to America on the SS Exeter and flies on the TWA L-749 Constellation, the first commercial plane to cross the Atlantic nonstop. It is an extraordinary life, told in a very unexcited voice.

The sequel to THE BIG MITT has arrived! It’s 1901, and Minneapolis’s most infamous detective, Harm Queen, is pulled by unfinished business into hostile rival city Saint Paul. When he attempts to rescue a prostitute, things take a terrible turn, forcing him to rely on guile and instinct to elude a host of dangerous enemies. Still worse, Queen falls into an unrequited love with the woman he’s desperately trying to protect. Ill-Fame twists through a dark world of high-scale brothels, cunning anarchists, dirty policemen and crazed gangsters. It's a whirlwind ride through the seedy underside of turn-of-the-century urban Minnesota, during a time when corruption and vice ran rampant through the Twin Cities’ crooked streets.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A most accomplished work By Ms M Papastavrou Unfortunately I have to give this book only 5 stars and this is because I don't have anymore available.First, for honesty purpose I have to say that, in my opinion, mystery books can be hit and miss and they are not really my genre, I just tolerate them. Secondly I have to stress that historical novels ARE the genre I love and I consider myself more than capable to pick easily when an author has only done poor research, creating a mere verisimilitude. However, for the sake of honesty once more, this book is a true gem, a major achievement, a delight and I recommend it wholeheartedly.Let me elaborate. From early on it becomes apparent that Mr Rivenes is very well read and prepared for his tough task of a historical novel. His descriptions of the story's different settings that the characters move, are lavish and generous and thoroughly convincing. From the river slums, to the University of Minneapolis, to the neighborhood of the Scandinavian immigrants, to the police station, to the bordello, to the gangsters''headquarters', to the Theatre Comique the borders between documented reality and fiction blend ethereally. But the true genius is the construction of characters. Harm Queen is the honest detective in a heavily corrupted environment. Fair enough, you think, he is constructed very well, in the form of a genre character, yes, he follows a stereotype but he does it very well and convincingly. And when you least expect it the hero becomes something much more. He breaks free from the stereotypes and takes a different direction towards a more complex humanity. The genius, I mentioned before is how effortlessly and subtly this happens: we're not talking about character inconsistency but character evolution. As a fellow author I feel pure envy just for this. And the same goes for his heroine Maisy Anderson. Deceptively fragile when necessary, happy and giddy somewhere else, hard as nails and unforgiving somewhere else but made respectfully by the author as a rich human being. The secondary characters were beautiful creations as well constructed with much care. Among else, tragicomic Martin Bauman, whose real crime is his almost deranged weakness, Dick 'Moonlight' Darling the charismatic University student and celebrated footballer, the decent Scandinavians that the police insisted throwing in the homogenous lump of 'anarchists' and most of all the glorious character of Henri, whom I felt in love with.I would go on and on recounting the merits of this book, which are plentiful but I would start spoiling the plot, I fear.So yeah. Last word. Reader, don't deny yourself the pleasure to discover them.

With a main character's name like Detective Harm Queen, how can this story not be compelling? Mr. Queen (love it) is a foul-mouthed, quick-witted detective rummaging around for trouble in 1901 Minneapolis. The language, costume, and characters all come to life in this particular era. Can't get over the character names, like Tilly, Moonlight, Doc, Dick...you get your fill of wonderful playfulness along with a riveting, bouncy plot. Other reviewers have noted the thoroughness with which the historical moment has been researched, and I have to agree. No jarring disconnects here. The mystery plows on with good writing and a keen attention for detail and heightened logic, necessary for a good mystery. Queen finds love unexpectedly (as the best detectives do) by falling for the woman in danger. Much like Sherlock's Woman, she certainly seems his match. Rivenes had me turning the pages, wanting to find out the twist to the story, and he delivered well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Turn of the century hard-boiled detective By KSF This is the second in a series about a Minneapolis chief of detectives. Harm Queen happily works for a corrupt mayor and the mayor's corrupt brother who is the chief of police. Harm makes a lot of money participating in their schemes. He's also a curious guy who can't let go of finding out what's really going on.Harm is introduced in an opening where two hobos have found a human finger in a fish. He doesn't come across as a likeable guy. As the book continues, it seems like there might be some hope for his redemption. He's given up drinking and has curbed the use of his fists to solve problems. He's done this for the love of a woman. He feels no sincere remorse for the people he fleeces in protection scams; his only concern is that it might embarrass his betrothed. He's greed driven and self-centered.This is a difficult place to start with a character and convince readers to go along for a whole novel waiting for the character to change into some more likeable, more worth the time and effort spent. Unfortunately, Harm doesn't change for the better.Nellie Boyce/Maisy Anderson, a woman who was kidnapped and forced into the sex trade, also starts as a hard unlikable character. Over the course of story, her experiences slowly roll out. By the end, she's a complex and sympathetic person that I could identify with. The plot is actually quite twisted and quite good. If you're a mystery fan, you'll enjoy the ride. The setting is historical and feels genuine on the page.I received this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

The Pharaoh’s Cat, narrated in the present tense by the cat himself, is the story of a free-spirited, quick-witted stray in ancient Egypt who suddenly finds himself with human powers joined to his feline nature. The cat immediately captures the attention of the seventeen-year-old Pharaoh, making him laugh for the first time since his parents' death, and is brought to live with him at the royal palace. The cat also becomes friends with the High Priest of the god Amun-Ra and seeks his help in solving the mystery of his human powers and the supernatural manifestations that later plague him. He has an enemy in the Vizier—the Pharaoh's uncle and the second most powerful man in Egypt. The Vizier hates him for himself and even more for his relationship with the Pharaoh. The cat participates in festivities at the royal palace, developing an insatiable appetite for good food, wine, and gossip. He later accompanies the Pharaoh on a trip through his kingdom, all the while renewing the Pharaoh’s ability to enjoy life and inspiring him to become a stronger leader. Between the cat and the Pharaoh a bond of love gradually forms which will determine Egypt's destiny. The Pharaoh's Cat imaginatively blends Egyptology with comedy, drama, and even time travel--the cat and the High Priest will meet Elena, a resident of the twenty-first century and the daughter of a renowned Egyptologist. Maria Luisa Lang was born in Rome and lives in New York City. She has a degree in art history and is an amateur Egyptologist. The Pharaoh's Cat is her first novel. She has almost completed a sequel.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The adventures of a magical cat in ancient Egypt By P. Brewster A fun and engaging story set in Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs of a witty, magical cat with a very wry sense of humor. Bestowed with human attributes, the cat's adventures take the reader from a series of events in ancient Egypt to contemporary times. Well researched with informative details on the history, culture and geography of ancient Egypt, the book is rife with laugh out loud situations and other passages are beautifully poetic and touching with truly heartfelt sentiments. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. A must for lovers of those revered feline creatures so admired in the annals of ancient Egypt.

The book left me with the sense of hope and well being and somewhat sad I had finished it By Luigi Sansone, author of Boccioni catalogue and Salvatore scarpitta catalogue raisonnè what an imaginative story told by an "Amazing" cat. I was transported through time, laughing and sometime crying. The book left me with the sense of hope and well being and somewhat sad I had finished it. I can't wait for the sequal. Bravo to the author. A metaphysical story full of historical details and very pleasent to read. It is a very good story for a movie.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The cat is better than any antidepressant! By RG I’m happier for having read this novel! Who would have thought that ancient Egypt could be funny? Well, The Pharaoh’s Cat makes it hilarious. The cat is far better than any antidepressant. Consider how the Pharaoh reacts to him. He laughs for first time since his parents’ death and happily welcomes him into his life. They have fun together at the Royal Palace and while touring Egypt. I had even more fun than the Pharaoh because I got to spend more time with the cat. Sometimes he goes off on his own, getting into comical predicaments and devising equally comical ways to extricate himself. Particularly hilarious are the scene with the hippo-skin mattress and the episode where the cat uses the oracle bull to take revenge on the Vizier, his archenemy. Both are inspired slapstick reminiscent of the Marx Brothers. The prose is clean and sharp, the point of view is the cat’s, and he speaks in the present tense. The result is a cinematic immediacy and intensity throughout. Though the humor is virtually non-stop, the underlying story is very touching. It’s about a bond between a man and a cat that not even death can sunder. My laughter at times gave way to sorrow and, I admit, a few tears. I was not only entertained and moved. I also learned a lot about ancient Egyptian locales, customs, and daily activities from the vivid descriptions woven into the narrative.I see that the sequel will soon be available. I can’t wait!
