For over a decade, Rosanne Bittner has enchanted her readers with tales of adventure and romance in the times before the White Man settled the West. Now, in the tradition of Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear, the bestselling author of Song of the Wolf and the Savage Destiny Indian series turns her hand to historical fiction with a wonderful new story of Native America sure to capture you and carry you on an adventure of love and hate, good and evil, life and death.

In 1833, Star Dancer, a Sichangu (Brulé Sioux), is promised in marriage to Stalking Wolf, an Oglala warrior whom she has never met. What begins as a loveless union develops into a moving story of a man and a woman led by powers beyond their control. Dreams, visions, and mystic experiences fill this provocative love story that launches a saga about the Lakota and their first meeting with the White Man.

CHAPTER ONEBY WHITE MAN’s terms, the year this story begins is 1832, during the Moon When The Ponies Shed…in May.* * *“Take pity on me. Show me the way, and protect my people.”A naked Night Hunter trembled from four days of hunger and thirst. The red heat of the afternoon sun penetrated his skin, but he ignored the pain, celebrating his suffering. Four days ago, his uncle, Runs With The Deer, had warned that he must come to the Big Waters of the sacred Black Hills to seek a vision.“A wolf spoke to me about you in a dream, my nephew. It told me you must go to the Big Waters. There the wolf will come to you and tell you of a woman you must seek, for without her, you cannot become a true leader of the People. This woman has power, and she will help you become a leader of the Oglala.”As a member of Naca Ominicia, men who represented the entire Lakota Nation, Runs With The Deer held a position of great importance and his dreams held great significance. Thus Night Hunter now sat alone on a high ledge that overlooked the Big Waters, waiting faithfully for the wolf to come to him.As he listened to the gentle flow of the river at the bottom of the canyon, he breathed deeply of the sweet, cool air that hung rich with the scent of wet pine needies. These sacred hills, nearly black with thick groves of deep green pine trees, harbored powerful spirits. Other Oglala men, and sometimes women, came to this hallowed place to seek visions.Again, Night Hunter drew on his sacred pipe, letting the sweet smoke fill his lungs. He held the pipe aloft and sang to the God of the Sky.“Take pity on me,” he repeated. “Show me the way, and protect my people.”Despite his powerful build, weakness consumed him, and raising his prayer pipe took great effort. With shaking hands and arms, he offered the sacred pipe to the four corners of the earth. At each point, east, west, north, south, he again sang his prayer, his voice husky from a dry throat. He lowered the pipe toward the ground, praying to sacred Mother Earth. Here he had experienced his first vision at fourteen summers of age. In that vision, the moon and the sun moved side by side, and then the moon passed over the sun, blocking its light. After that, Moon Painter, the Oglala priest, told him that he should be called Night Hunter. He had lived up to his name, hunting at night, his vision sharper in the night’s darkness than others of his clan. Unafraid of the spirits of the darkness, he once killed a buffalo after dark, an accomplishment that brought him great praise and adoration from his fellow warriors, even from the wise old men of the Big Belly Society. For the next ten summers he pursued his quest to be a leader among the Oglala, a Wicasa, Shirt Wearer. From there he hoped to become Wicasa Itacan, one who ruled the Shirt Wearers.Night Hunter swayed, then fell. The gravelly earth cut into his elbow and forearm, and he grimaced as he managed to ease himself back up. He crossed his legs and laid his pipe across his knees. Taking a deep r breath for courage, he slid his hunting knife from its sheath and deftly sliced into his left arm, then stretched it out so that the blood from the wound dripped onto Mother Earth. He must show the Great Spirit his willingness to sacrifice even his own blood for the gift of a vision.Could the woman of whom the wolf spoke be Fall Leaf Woman? He had enjoyed her slippery depths many times since the day two summers past when she caught him alone and boldly offered herself to him. She had dropped her tunic, exposing her womanly mysteries, enticing him with licks and caresses that caused him to fall under her power. Since then, she had continued to brazenly offer herself to him without reservation.Fall Leaf Woman truly seemed to care for him, but he did not feel deeply for her. Lately she annoyed him with her constant pestering, and it seemed that wherever he turned, she hovered nearby. Surely such a woman could not be his intended. She held no special powers. Whomever he chose to call first wife must be a woman of great honor, one who would cost many horses, and who would not offer herself physically without a great price. Fall Leaf Woman did not hold such honor; he could have her for no price at all.As the sun lowered, the western trees and hills cast a shadow over Night Hunter. His body shook with a chill, and he nearly passed out again. Thunder boomed overhead, rousing him from his stupor. The earth began to shake, and a powerful dizziness overcame him as the thundering noise grew so loud it hurt his ears. Then he saw it, a herd of buffalo stampeding toward him. Their pounding hooves shook the ground, yet they did not touch the ground at all. They charged out of the sky, so many and so fast that he could never run fast enough to avoid being trampled. He sucked in his breath and waited for whatever must come, and just before reaching him, the herd suddenly parted and thundered around him on either side. Wild, black eyes glared at him as shaggy heads darted past. He heard their snorting, felt the hot breath from their nostrils, yet their feet stirred no dust once they touched the canyon ledge where he sat.The herd suddenly vanished, and silence reigned once again. Then, from where the great beasts had charged out of the sky, a bright white cloud approached, swirling and eddying as it floated closer. Finally it came to rest on a nearby outcropping of rocks at the edge of the great chasm before him. Gradually the cloud changed shape, forming a white buffalo. Then a black cloud, outlined in yellow, swirled and tumbled toward the white buffalo, settling beside it. The black cloud slowly took the shape of a wolf with yellow eyes. The menacing beast began to prowl around the white buffalo as though stalking it. When the wolf seemed ready to pounce, the head of the buffalo quickly transformed into a woman’s face, her long hair white and shaggy like the buffalo’s mane. She looked down at the wolf, and the animal backed away. Then one leg of the white buffalo turned into a slender arm that reached out and touched the wolf’s head.“One day you, Night Hunter, will be my husband,” she told the wolf. “But then your name will be Stalking Wolf.”She withdrew her hand and became a buffalo again. She ambled away, and the wolf turned to Night Hunter, its yellow eyes filled with wisdom. “She is the woman you must marry,” the beast told Night Hunter. “She is blessed by the white buffalo. When you find her, do not let her go.”The wolf turned and chased after the white buffalo. Night Hunter watched until both figures again became only clouds, which soon disappeared into the red sunset. Then a blinding flash of light exploded across the sky, causing Night Hunter to cup his hands over his eyes. A great warmth enveloped him, and when he dared look again, he saw a man standing before him with outstretched arms and a hairy face. He wore a simple robe, his long hair and the hair on his face lighter in color than Night Hunter’s hair. The man’s gentle, comforting gaze held Night Hunter in rapture for several minutes, but the vision did not speak. As Night Hunter watched, the man spun around and his robes fell away, until he wore only an apron about his loins. His hair and skin turned darker and his outstretched arms bulged with more muscles, until he grew into a powerful giant of a man with feathers sprouting from his arms and back. Finally, the feathers covered his entire body, and his head trans formed into the head of an eagle. He opened his beak and spoke.“The man who appeared first represents peace, as will the woman you take as a wife. I am the Feathered One, and I represent the power of the Oglala, as do you, Stalking Wolf. Go and seek the woman of peace among the people of the Burnt Thighs. Some call her the White Buffalo Woman.”The Being soared away, disappearing into the clouds. Night Hunter stared after it in awe and confusion. A terrible dizziness washed over him then and he fell, hitting his head on a rock. He breathed deeply of the sweet smell of pine before lapsing into unconsciousness.* * *The next morning, Runs With The Deer and other Big Bellies came to check on Night Hunter. They found him lying near death, his head and left arm encrusted by dried blood.“Take him, quickly,” Runs With The Deer ordered. “Moon Painter must pray over him, and his mother and sister can tend to him.”The others managed to,maneuver Night Hunter onto a travois tied to a horse. They hauled his limp body back to camp, but Runs With The Deer remained behind, staring out over the valley below.“What have you seen?” he muttered, wishing his nephew could speak. He noticed a feather on the ground, and he stooped to pick it up, but a sudden wind whisked it away. It floated out over the valley below and disappeared.Copyright © 1999 by Rosanne Bittner

For those of us who have read and loved Song of the Wolf, this is a long overdue wait. Because I am Native American myself, I look for authenticity and am usually disappointed at stereotyping and less than accurate depictions of my people. Bittner is a rare romance writer who seems to care about making the Indian, a human with strengths and failures, who love and hate and feel. I really enjoyed this book but I miss the depth that is missing that was in Song of the Wolf or Montana Woman. An extra hundred pages of depth to the plot, and yes, the characters would have been most welcome. However, if you love romance, Bittner should be your first choice. -Reviewed by Spirit Wolf

Their marriage did not begin in love. They were two strangers destined to lead the Lakota to a better and stronger future.Fall Leaf Woman and Gray Owl were the only ones who did not embrace the couple in welcome. Despite their greed for revenge and jealousy, they must learn that the Spirits will always do whatever is needed to ensure the survival of the People.*** The first of a new Mystic series! It has been years since I have found such an amazing author as this! It follows history closely. Shows how things were made and the pride of ceremonies. I did not realize how much I was learning about the Lakota because I was deep into the story of this incredible couple! This one has just been released in paperback. The next of this series will be released in May in hardback and titled "Mystic Visions". I will have the review up within a few more days. Don't miss Mystic Dreamers! ***

It turns out it was a great purchase. I could not put the book down. The romantic side of the story and the realism kept me reading and in a few days I was through and wishing I had Mystic Warriors to keep reading the story. The writing style made me feel as though I was there. I am now an avid fan of Rosanne Bittner and have just ordered Mystic Dreamer and plan to read as many of her books as possible.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Didn't Work For Me By Burgundy Damsel Let's start with the good here. The cover was pretty, the writing/vocab was simple and user-friendly, and the author had some interesting ideas and points to make. His reminiscences of Christmases past were the highlight of the book.Unfortunately, those good things could not overcome the aspects of this book that just didn't work for me, which can primarily be summarized under two categories: (1) Flow/cohesiveness and (2) Lack of clear relation to Christmas.Let's start with the second issue first: Lack of Relation To Christmas.Several chapters of this book revolved around the stories and experiences of Zaccharius and Elizabeth. Although I grasp how they are connected to the Christmas story in the larger picture, they don't really seem to be particularly connected to it. Using their experiences for so much of the book felt like stretch. Although the rest of the book linked to Mary, the Magi, and the Shepherds - all of whom are directly active in the Christmas story - they provided a jumping-off point rather than a true anchor for their chapters.Which takes us squarely into the other problem I had and the main reason this book got two stars: Flow/cohesiveness. There were a lot of ideas in this book, many of which could really have used more unpacking and contemplation. Although many of the included trains of thought may have been initially inspired by a character or situation in the Christmas story, they had very little to do with each other or with Christmas. I repeatedly found myself flipping back several pages, trying to figure out how I'd gone from point A to point B and why, since they didn't seem to be cleanly related or relevant to what I thought was being discussed.Example: At one point the author talks about choosing responses that make us better rather than bitter in the face of tragedy. His link to the Christmas story is that getting pregnant with an immaculate child qualified as a tragedy in Mary's world based on the potential impacts and the time period in which she lived. I could see where he was going with the idea, but it never quite actually worked.I think the book would have worked significantly better in a different format. For example, presented as a series of sermons, essays or blog posts loosely tied together under the heading of "thoughts, reflections, and lessons inspired by reflections on the Christmas story". Better unpacked and standing alone, the legitimately interesting and worthwhile ideas at the core of the book would have been much more accessible and had more impact. As it was, I felt the book came off as lacking in cohesion and a bit too much of a stretch.Bottom Line: If you're looking for a different way to approach or glean wisdom from the Christmas story, you might find some decent angles here to play with and pursue. If you're looking for a clearly Christmas-related book to enjoy and reflect on as we approach the holiday season, pass on this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderfully Written Book To Help You Celebrate Advent By Amazon Customer I enjoy books that give me something Christian to ponder over the Advent season. Something that helps me get past all the blatant holiday shopping commercials, talk of Black Friday, and my extended family chaos that is bad enough all year, but which often erupts are holidays - especially Christmas. I like a book I can cozy up with at night and dig into the story of the birth of Jesus and what it means to me, and to the world. And this book is a very well written one to hit the spot. Immediately, even before the Prologue, we are introduced to the very warm and personal writing style of the author. I knew right away, as he described a Christmas from his past that I had something in common with him and was going to enjoy this book.He brings up five parts to the Christmas story, from Elizabeth and Zechariah to the Magi. And after each chapter he gives several questions for us to think about, and also writes about another personal Christmas experience of his own. It all flows smoothly and keeps me engaged in the Christmas spirit. The book includes parts of the Bible for you to re-read so you can either keep your Bible right next to you while reading this, but don't have to if you don't want to. It includes the main verses being talked about.Nothing warms my soul more than Christmastime, when put in the right perspective of the story of Jesus's birth and thinking of warmth and love, family, and peace and goodwill toward all. And of course, miracles.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Lynnda Ell This is the worst "book" I've ever reviewed. I have book in quotes, because it isn't a book. In my opinion, if you read the first 10 pages, you'll have the "best" part of the whole thing. The prologue is a copy of the document agents get from writers who want to find a publisher for their work. The rest is a randomly pasted-in snap shots of the author's past that are only indirectly related to each other or to the text. The material is repetitious and the questions add nothing important to the work. I cannot imagine what audience Abington Press intended to sell Five Questions of Christmas to. I'm certainly not in it.

It's called El Toque de la Luna--The Touch of the Moon. At least that's how nineteen-year-old Gabby's older sister, Esperanza, refers to the magical powers she inherited from their Mayan ancestors. Esperanza says women with El Toque weave magic into their knitting, creating tapestries capable of saving--or devastating--the world. Gabby thinks Esperanza is more like touched in the head--until a man dressed like a candy corn arrives at their Seattle home on Halloween. But "Mr. C" is far from sweet...Soon, Gabby and her almost-more-than-friend, Frank, find themselves spirited away to a demon ball, complete with shape shifters--and on a mission to destroy Esperanza's tapestries before they cause an apocalyptic disaster... And before it's too late to confess their true feelings for each other.

Review "Blood Stitches is... filled with unique characters and non-stop action... I really enjoyed the wit and banter of the characters of this story... The overall world was nicely detailed and put together... The creatures in this novel take honorable mention for creativity." - Dark Faerie Tales Review"I truly enjoyed Blood Stitches. I read it while attending an athletic event and even with all the commotion around me I became submersed. I could envision the surroundings and was vested in the characters. I cared about what happened to the alux twins and I was relieved that Gabby and Frank didn't just let them go. It flowed with such a good rhythm and had the right amount of mythology mixed in. And I'm really looking forward to the sequel!"- Goodreads reviewer

As a fan of horror and fantasy this entwines flavorable characters pulling you along a dark mystery of the tale until finalizing it in the end for the reader. Erin Fanning's writing is precise and to the point and quite engaging.

The first twinge of danger in the appearance of a strange creature dressed like a huge Corn Candy By Thistletoes ‘Blood Stitches’, written by Erin Fanning, cleverly combines a mix of ancient Mayan myths, reality and romance as a vehicle to offer us an entertaining and truly unusual adventure filled with paranormal creatures and expanding intrigue. The first twinge of danger in the appearance of a strange creature dressed like a huge Corn Candy, one who is not nearly as sweet as he seems. His threatening behavior sends teens Frank and Gabby heading for home to find her Aunt Esperanza on a wild Halloween evening. When Mr. C appears there, the two teens are magically entwined by Esperanza’s knitting yarn in both in a symbolic and a real way, (stitched. Now the two must begin to rely upon one another more deeply as the story pulls them even closer. They began to understand the twisted collection of paranormal characters, appreciating each and each other with different perspectives and growing knowledge. The developing interaction of the humans vs non-humans intrigued me on both sheer entertainment and intellectual levels. The Mayan history of Popol Vuh and the sometimes endearingly demonic characters sent me chasing through the Web for more information. As I read and researched, I realized just how cleverly Fanning propelled the entire story along with those historical nuggets, planted in such a way as to build my growing interest in Mayan culture, the creation of those characters and the mythical world in which they lived. In the end, not only did I appreciate the history she presented with those little goblins, but I appreciated the revelation of their depth of character, all in a captivating story which had me wanting to read more. I soon realized these creatures were not just inventions of the author but spring from real Mayan mythology which I hope to study more deeply. I hope, as many reviewers commented, that Fanning will write a sequel and perhaps a series, so that Esperanza, Gabby and Frank as well as some of the other players in this story will take us along on yet another adventure.

By Dark Faerie Tales Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Blood Stitches is a crazy paranormal story filled with unique characters and non-stop action.Opening Sentence: A gust of wind scattered leaves across the University of Seattle campus. The Review:Blood Stitches is filled with unique characters you don’t often find in paranormal stories. The story is highly influenced by Mayan gods, goddesses and superstition. Blood Stitches is a short story that is so jam packed with action that it kind of lacks a bit of character development. I would have liked to have a more detailed back story that wasn’t glossed over as the story moved along. I also wouldn’t classify this as romance, it has more elements of an urban fantasy story mixed with some horror elements. It is kind of a New Adult story since the main character is nineteen, but it could almost pass as an older young adult story. (I would liken it to elements of R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series or any of Christopher Pike’s teen horror stories.)Gabby is just a happy college student hanging out with her best friend and long-time crush, Frank, when she is confronted by a strange looking man. The man who looks like a Candy Corn is looking for her sister. Candy Corn, dubbed “Mr. C” wants a piece that Esperanza, Gabby’s sister, is finishing for his boss. What Gabby doesn’t know is that her grandmother and sisters’ penchant for knitting actually has some paranormal qualities. These qualities are infused with the feelings of the knitter and items that have been included in the piece. It is Gabby and Esperanza’s Mayan ancestry that makes this possible. Although, Gabby doesn’t have the talent for it.Esperanza has been working on several “Disaster” pieces that when put together could bring about the end of the world. Mr. C’s boss has all but one of them. With some quick thinking and brash wit, Gabby and Frank force Mr. C to take them to the pieces because they need to be destroyed. Also, Gabby and Frank’s wrists end up stitched together so they have another reason to destroy the works. Gabby and Frank end up on a wild ride together learning all about the unseen who only come out on Halloween. I forgot to mention that it is Halloween during this story. This wild ride introduces them to all manner of strange creatures with Mayan folk lore as its’ basis. For the most part, I really enjoyed the wit and banter of the characters of this story. The conversations were pretty funny and strange. I really enjoyed the strange character of Tory, I would gladly read another story that features him. The overall world was nicely detailed and put together. I would really like that to be expanded upon in a future story too, if possible.I was just a little disappointed in the development of Gabby and Frank. I really thought it was more of a romance by the synopsis and the cover. Gabby just didn’t interest me until close to the end. I was really hoping to see more development with her. I also just didn’t get Frank’s obsession with Lester Ruben and why he was constantly singing his lyrics. It happened so much that I thought something would come of it besides confusing the bad guys for half a second. Or maybe I just missed that in all the action?Blood Stitches is a Crazy story that earns the big “C” in crazy. I would recommend this short story for someone who wants something a little different. The crazy creatures in this novel do take honorable mention for creativity.Notable Scene:We soon arrived at a street filled with partygoers weaving along the sidewalk and spilling into the road. A group of kids wearing Goth makeup, dark eyeliner, lips, clothes, the works, threw rocks at a parked car. Ropy scars crisscrossed a boy’s face, and instead of a nose, two nostril holes gaped. He yawned, and a stream of fire shot out.“Kids today.” Tory shook his head.A man with pointy elf ears ran across the street. His cap fluttered after him, along with three giant cockroaches. Demons dashed beside the sidewalk in pursuit of teenage girls shrieking and squealing. Heavy metal blasted from taverns, and masked people danced around a jaguar. The big cat snarled and crouched, ready to spring.“I’ve never seen such great costumes,” Frank said. “They look real.”“Because they are. Real, that is.” Tory said.FTC Advisory: Lyrical Press/Kensington provided me with a copy of Blood Stitches. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

By Julie After losing her parents in a tragic car accident, little Maddy Hebditch had been sent off to Yorkshire to live with her only living relative, her strict and cantankerous grandmother at Larkspur Farm. Life with her grandmother is anything but easy and the daily grind at the farm back-breaking and tough, but when things get too hard for her, she escapes into the pages of her favourite books or goes to play with her good friend Alice, who lives up at Windhover Hall. Maddy’s passion for schooling soon gets her a place at one of the county’s top schools. Having grown used to having Maddy doing most of the work at the farm, her grandmother is initially reluctant to send her off to school, but she is finally persuaded to give her granddaughter an education and a much needed new lease of life. At school, Maddy is able to indulge her love for learning and to make friends with other people her own age, like impish Marigold who, like Alice, seems to have set her sights on the boy she has loved from the very first moment she had clapped eyes on him: Tom Browning…But with the gathering clouds of war fast approaching, it looks like unrequited love will soon be the least of Maddy’s worries. Determined to do her duty for king and country, Maddy decides to join the ATS to do her bit for the war effort. Although at the back of her mind she is still worrying about her grandmother and her increasing reliance and dependence upon the O’Halloran family – who had moved into Larkspur to help run the farm while she is away – Maddy soon throws herself into doing the most dangerous job a woman can do in wartime: working in the ack-ack sites. Despite the constant peril she faces every day, Maddy has never quite managed to forget about the boy who had stolen her heart all those years ago. Yet, she knows that Tom’s feelings for her will always be strictly platonic.Maddy is not the only one who is risking her life for her country. Although Marigold had found working in the ack-ack sites far too strenuous, Alice had become a nurse in Egypt and Tom had joined up and is facing the enemy on the front-line on a daily basis. With the war seemingly endless, the four friends soon realise that they will need all of their strength and courage to keep fighting for victory. But when Tom is injured in an accident that leaves him fighting for his life, Maddy realises that despite her best efforts she is still as madly in love with him as ever. But will he ever see her as anything but a friend? Or will she be destined to live the rest of her life in the shadow of her two glamorous friends?Katie Flynn is a wonderfully gifted writer who effortlessly transports her readers back to the past with her latest mesmerizing saga, A Summer Promise. Full of richly drawn characters that leap off the pages, beautifully evocative descriptions of life in wartime England, touching romance, heart-warming pathos and nail-biting drama, A Summer Promise is a triumphant tale of the ties that bind, love lost and found, the power of friendship and the devastation of war that hooked me in from the very first page and kept me gleefully turning the pages late into the night. It’s impossible not to fall under Katie Flynn’s magical spell and A Summer Promise is sure to delight her legion of devoted fans and win her lots of new ones who will soon not be able to get enough of her involving, intriguing and mesmerizing historical sagas!

The Awkward Age, by Henry James

Review Novel by Henry James, published in 1899. Written mostly in dialogue with limited narrative explanation, The Awkward Age is the story of Nanda Brookenham, a young society woman whose attempts at marriage are foiled by various members of her mother's social circle. Nanda's manipulative mother, Fernanda, is the hostess of a fashionable London salon. The two women both appear to love Gustavus Vanderbank, a young government employee, who becomes alienated from them. Nanda is befriended by the elderly Mr. Longdon, who once courted her grandmother, and by the young Mr. Mitchett, who unhappily marries Little Aggie, a naive young woman steered into the marriage by her conniving aunt, the Duchess. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Inside Flap Introduction by Cynthia Ozick

From the Back Cover Henry James had arrived at such mastery of the forms and uses of fiction by the time he published The Awkward Age in 1899 that this story of a young girl introduced into a casually corrupt circle of sophisticates is at once a universal drama of innocence confronting evil, a detailed examination of a social order, and a stunning picture of a civilization in crisis.

A Psychological Policier By A Customer If you are not prepared to read several scenes in this novel slowly and often, there is a very good chance that, like many academic reviewers, you will leave it thinking less well of the characters in it than you do of yourself for having, with only moderate encouragement from James, "seen through them." Not many of them are easy to like. Mrs. Brook in particular is, as James clearly implies in his preface to the New York edition, essentially a character in a French novel--charming, beautiful, terminally manipulative. But the pleasure of this book is precisely that it obliges you, by the precise obliquity of its writing, to recurively correct your notions as you move through a series of set scenes, transferring your allegiances as characters initially attractive come to seem less so, and as characters less attractive come, by their honesty or their helplessness, to the moral fore. The long scene at Tishy Grendon's, in which everything comes to a kind of moral head, craves such careful reading that even inveterately fascinated and loyalist readers of James will need to piece their way through it very slowly. Critics and readers who, understandably, wonder why all this fuss is made about people themselves ultimately trivial, need to be reminded that James spent his life as a writer teaching us, by the difficulty of his writing, to read (in just the same way that Bach teaches us to listen). It is "the fascination of what's difficult" that keeps us turning pages, though it must be said that what's difficult here is considerably less so than, say, in The Golden Bowl or The Wings Of The Dove. Ultimately, what is upheld in these novels is the willingness, in a world riddled with well bred rottenness, evil in spotless linen, to live without self pity or bitterness, and for this alone James should be required reading for Americans of the 21st Century.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. one of James's best By A Customer An absolutely amazing book, and one of the best examples of the qualities that make Henry James unique. What James presents us with is basically a group of people whose fate is already determined on the novel's first page. The entire narrative course of the book consists of the schemes and rationalizations these characters put together in a series of unsuccessful attempts to alter or deny their various fates. A beautiful instance of the idea that language, and the fantasies constructed by language, form a "parallel universe" of sorts, which exists both as a reflection of and a divergence from the physical reality in which James' characters exist. Really not to be missed

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An underrated novel by the great novelist. By Ernest Joselovitz This is a surprisingly fine novel, so often overlooked, by James. About the usual upper-class Londoners near the turn of the century. In this case, disturbed by the arrival of an acquaintance of the earlier generation, one women in particular, and his effect upon the marital prospects of that woman's granddaughter, with whom he establishes a special relationship. Each person has an agenda, often at complex cross-purposes, filtered through misunderstandings, indirectness in communications, and the hypocrisy of greed and social ambitions. One need only get through James' penchant for the prepositional phrase, and his characters' habit of so seldom saying anything simply and directly. to be rewarded with a rare reading experience.

"This is the way books should be…. Swashbuckling, evil kings, handsome rogue princes, intelligent heroines, great humor, compelling love… Needless to say: It’s a new favorite." – Reading Backwards Review Fleeing for her life with her murderous uncle hard upon her heels, Rose of Valinor seeks the aid of the one person she is certain will help her—the legendary Prince of Venya, who was forced into exile by Rose's uncle. Bold and dashing, wily and clever, the Prince of Venya is the hero of a hundred songs and stories—a sorcerer pirate whose courage is only exceeded by his gallantry. All the tales agree that he would never refuse a lady in distress, but the man Rose meets is far from her chivalric ideal. Florian of Venya has one goal: to free his people from King Richard's despotic rule—and time is running out. He has no intention of letting any woman distract him, particularly Richard's niece, whom he suspects is either a madwoman or a spy. When he realizes that that Rose is the key to regaining his lost kingdom, he will use any means to win her heart—but first they must escape King Richard's pursuit. **Originally published as Elizabeth Minogue** **New for Kindle: A Glossary of Place Names and Characters**

A delightful story that mixes fantasy and romance in a medieval type of world By Kelley Hartsell Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and KritiquesThis is a delightful story that mixes fantasy and romance in a medieval type of world.Rose of Valinor is on a mission. Fleeing a depressing place in which she had recently been imprisoned, she goes on the run to find the one man she feels can help her. She needs to find the Prince of Venya in the hopes he can help her escape the wrath of her uncle. The man she finds is nothing like the stories and legends claim, but someone infinitely more intriguing.Florian barely held on to his life a fateful day many years ago, when the wretched King Richard killed his parents and took over the lands of Venya. As a result, he made a vow that no matter what the risk, he would one day rid his lands of Richard, and assume his rightful place as ruler. He has no time for a misguided young woman whom he feels is slightly mad... or does he?When Florian realizes Rose may be his greatest hope in ending the long years of war, he determines to make her his by fair means or foul, and sets his course. Little did either of them realize that they'd find their greatest strengths in each other... and a love that is the stuff legends are made of.This was a wonderful story! Ms. Minogue weaves a passionate tale, full of suspense, romance, mystery, and a healthy dose of the paranormal. Readers will venture in to the swashbuckling world of pirates, where no one is quite what they seem, and magic is the name of the game. The plot is swift moving and well developed, luring one in on the first page and holding tight until the final scenes unfold, surprising in their outcome.Rose is a brave woman, who puts all else before herself, never minding the risk to her own life. She is deeply passionate, highly intelligent, very caring, and in love with a legend. Florian has one mission in life and always has - to restore his people to their rightful land and to take his place as ruler of the magical land. He is strong willed, also very passionate, and finds himself taken with the young beauty who seeks his aid. When these two come together, their love is all consuming but not without its ups and downs.Magic, as mentioned before, is a primary player woven into the story. The `filidhi', who fled Venya, are a people of great wisdom and none too lacking in magical abilities. Their skills come into play many times throughout the story, adding a mystical bend to the tale. Florian himself has some pretty impressive abilities, though one is kept in the dark as to what they are through much of the story, with the secret only being revealed when most necessary to the storyline. Also there are other fantastical beings in the story, like the Ilindrian race of people who have some unique traits of their own, and the sea-going merrow, who appear to be much like what is more commonly known as a mermaid. These beings add interesting facets to the story, making it the impressive fantasy it is.All of the secondary characters are rendered beautifully, with unique personalities. This reviewer was intrigued by many of them. There was the young brave Beylik, a former slave, Florian's surgeon, Sigurd who is not what he seems, the young Ilindrian shipmate Ashkii, King Cristobal of Sorlain, the filidhi Mage apprentice Caelan and the hated King Richard. Everyone adds depth and dimension to the story, making for a more than satisfying read. This was a fascinating story that this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend highly. Also, she has a sneaking suspicion that there may be sequels yet to come, having found some characters just longing for their own stories to be told.© Kelley A. Hartsell, December 2004. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Minogue at a book signing event recently and I must say she is one of the nicest and most pleasant authors I've ever met. I purchased a few of her books and I am thoroughly impressed. I have never read any books in this genre before, but her writing style kept me glued to the pages. Whether you're into these types of novels or not, you should give them a try.

Richard has the ruling monarch and his wife killed, but Sir Ewan and a few other leaders manage to rescue seven year old Prince Florien.Eighteen years later, Princess Rose of Valinor escapes from her Uncle Richard. She seeks Florien as the only person who might keep her safe since she believes he would never sell her to his enemy her uncle. Rose meets Florien who rejects her contention that she is his enemy's niece, but takes her on his ship, the Quest.Rose convinces Florien that she is who she claims to be because of her knowledge of the atrocities perpetrated on his people. He still reels from the crushing of his Fheara tribesmen by Richard while the Filidh mages have made their home on another island and want to forget their heritage. Rose tells him that the Fheara feel abandoned by him and the mages. Florien wonders if Rose is part of the prophecy to regain Venya; by marrying her can he regain what he lost as his people will no longer fight for him, but would rally around his courageous Rose who he loves. This romantic fantasy contains magical elements that seem genuine and add depth especially an exciting Game of Kings contest that will remind fans of the wizards' fight in Disney's The Sword and the Stone. Fans will appreciate the strong female character, but also find fault with the obstinate Florien always insisting on going it alone. Well written so that the audiences of both genres will treasure, but the anticipated confrontation with the villain and the retaking back the Prince's lost land never happens.Harriet Klausner

A tale of war and witchcraft ... plots and playhouses ... love and loyalty. Following his coronation in Scotland, Charles ll leads an army south to reclaim his throne but the dream ends in a crushing defeat at Worcester, leaving no alternative but flight. With little more than the clothes on their backs, Ashley Peverell and Francis Langley flee to Paris where Ashley, known to some as The Falcon, resumes his covert work for the King. Beautiful, stubborn and street-wise, Athenais de Galzain has risen from the slums of Paris to become the Marais Theatre's leading actress. Unfortunately, this brings her to the attention of the Marquis d'Auxerre - an influential nobleman of unsavoury reputation who is accustomed to taking what he wants. While the Prince's Fronde turns the city into a battle-ground, Francis is bullied into helping his sister, Celia, obtain a divorce from Eden Maxwell. Meanwhile, in London, Eden watches Cromwell's rise to unopposed power and begins to question the cause he has been serving for a decade. From the first, Ashley and Athenais are drawn together with the force of two stars colliding; a force which Ashley, conscious of the frequency with which he is required to risk his life, cannot deny but resolves to conceal. He has only two priorities; his work for Charles ll and his determination to protect Athenais from the Marquis. Both are to test him to the limits. The King's Falcon follows the Cavaliers' last crusade and their subsequent bitter, poverty-stricken exile whilst also going behind the scenes at the Theatre du Marais. There is danger, intrigue and romance in this sequel to The Black Madonna and Garland of Straw.

Half epic historical, half romance By magdiego Half epic historical, half romance, this sprawling story takes place at the end of the English Civil War, and follows the fortunes of two Royalist soldiers, left unemployed – and penniless - by the defeat of their cause. After a final defeat at Worcester, Ashley Peverell and Francis Langley make their way to Paris, where they continue to serve their exiled King. They both wind up becoming involved with a leading Parisian theater – as well as two women employed there. There is a great deal of historical detail here, from the behind-the-scenes political strategy to the blow-by-blow battle descriptions, and the book gives a fairly good introduction to the history of the times. It dovetails nicely with the romance, showing how the events of the day impacted the lives of the people surviving them. However, the overall effect can be somewhat jarring, moving quickly from the macro viewpoint, to the more close up of individual lives. The story focuses mostly on Ashley Peverell, who has served not only as a soldier, but as a spy for Charles II. His relationship with the theater’s leading actress, Athenais de Galzain, develops nicely, but the conflict that keeps them from achieving happily-ever-after seems contrived. He worries that she could do better than a penniless soldier, although she is only recently managed to barely pull herself out of poverty. The story worked better for me when they worked together to face an outside evil. This is the third book in a series, and having read the previous two, I would imagine that although this book could be read independently, it makes for a richer experience to read them in order. I’m only hoping that it’s not a trilogy, I’m still anxiously awaiting Eden’s story!

By OLT (Caveat: If you are a reader of historical romance, which is usually light on history and heavy on romance, you may find the reading of Riley's Roundheads and Cavaliers heavier on history than you are used to. Just a heads-up.)How beautifully Stella Riley makes history come alive. Even when I think she's giving me too much information and detail and feel overload coming on, she manages to give a reprieve by getting more into the personal lives of her fictional characters to spare my brain for a while.I have to confess that at the beginning of this third book of the series I was somewhat intimidated and a bit disappointed in the story. Too much background and history and then the Battle of Worcester, although exciting, seemed to go on somewhat overlong. But once the Cavaliers and the Scottish army are defeated at Worcester and Charles II has to sneak back to the Continent and our two main characters have to flee to France, all becomes just the way I like a Stella Riley novel to be. And the romance lover should be happy to know that this is a twofer, as far as romance goes.Ashley Peverell and Francis Langley, Cavalier soldiers readers may know from previous books, are in exile in Paris, with no money and no way to make a living at the moment. Meanwhile, we have a parallel story running about people working at the Marais Theatre. Most importantly there's Pauline Fleury, formerly the theatre's leading lady but now working as dresser since an accident left her with a limp and a scarred face, and there's up-and-coming talented and beautiful Athenais de Galzain, Pauline's protegee and friend.Naturally the two parallel stories will end up meeting and there will be lots of great action, adventure and romance. There will be intrigue and spying on behalf of Charles II (Ashley is, after all, the King's Falcon, right-hand man), and a more personal issue with poor Athenais being pursued by a jaded, amoral Frenchman who's set on having her and wanting nothing or no-one in his way.Great story. Don't let yourself be discouraged by the slow start to it. It does pick up and then it's off and running. 650 pages that will have you so absorbed that you'll be at the last one before you know it and wishing the next story were ready to pick up and start reading.BTW, there's a turn of events for Eden Maxwell in this that will have his fans feeling a little better for him. Unfortunately, Eden's story, which is to be the next, will not be finished any time soon, according to Riley's blog, but she says, "I'll try to keep the wait down to less than 20 years".

By myrtle I would highly recommend any of Stella Riley's books; they are so well written and you begin to understand how skilled she is when she weaves in the history of the time with the wonderful romance and adventure that each book she carefully crafts has for a reader. I eagerly await her next book.

Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery can be used by otolaryngology residents on their neurotology rotations, neurotology fellows throughout their training, and otologists and neurotologists looking for a portable reference guide that covers the entire breadth of the field. From the Foreword: "This remarkable text edited by Drs. McRackan and Brackmann is a significant addition to our armamentarium of references in the field of Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery. The chapters are well written and encompass the scope of the subspecialty. Each author is a well recognized expert in their field and the format of the chapters by outline is extremely easy to follow. It is an outstanding reference for residents, fellows, and practicing otolaryngologists as well as neurotologists. The text is simplistic and easily addresses any question that may arise in the mind of the reader. This is clearly a reference guide. No attempts have been made to increase the prose to describe the topics, but that is not to say that the key issues are hard to assess using the format. The editors are to be commended in formulating a text that is extremely user friendly to the reader. In these days where the majority of information we seek is available on the internet, this particular book will be a completely different offering which will be a welcome addition to anyone’s library." --Harold C. Pillsbury, MD Professor and Chief Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
