"In THE NINTH WIND, Moses Siregar takes readers to a fascinating new world where politics, magic, and adventure mingle in exciting and profound ways. If you like fantasy, you'll love this!" --NYT Bestseller David Farland THE NINTH WIND SPEAKS FOR THE DEAD … The Ancestors whisper of rebellion, their breath a cold blue wind in the forests and hills of Andars. The Rezzian occupation lingers, dragging the folk of the hills through bitterness and despair. Three siblings stand ready to challenge the Kingdom of Rezzia. Their fates have long been seen by the primordial Orns: one by Angst, one by Fidelity, one by Wrath. Idonea searches the dark wood to master the magic of the three sacred trees. Skye pursues omens to lead his shield-brothers to victory over Rezzia's legions. As armies battle for control of the Andaran hills, Dag calls out so that he may become as impenetrable as Altrea, allowing nothing to bend him, or turn him, or break him, so that he may stand and defend his kin. The ten gods of Rezzia and their lions stand in his way. The Ninth Wind is the long-awaited return to Moses Siregar III’s award-winning epic fantasy series, Splendor and Ruin. Drawing on Norse, Greek, and Indian mythologies, the Ninth Wind is a tale of betrayal and retribution, of gods and sages and witches, of fearless journeys and magical awakenings. It is a tale of honor, devotion, and valor. An adult tale of the children of wind and wood. ________ "... I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of The Ninth Wind by Moses Siregar, a terrific Indy writer who I think is going to blow up big when this comes out. A top tier epic fantasy from him." --Jonathan Wood, author of NO HERO

When I finally got my hands on it I promised myself to talk it slow and not read more than a flew chapters a day. Of course I finished it sometime that night! I just couldn't help myself. I had high expectations for this book and the author met all of them! I particularly like how different magic/belief systems work together. The treated not like separate systems, but as different part of the same tapestry with each one connecting to the other. I still have a lot of questions, but I am sure that they will be answered in a later work. I can't wait for the Gods divide.

By Winchester13 When you pick up The Ninth Wind, what you may not realize is that you're getting not only a rich, detailed, fantasy world to dive into, but a thoughtful social and spiritual commentary as well. This book is not simply a gratuitous fantasy full of magic and quests (and I've read those, and nothing wrong with that at all). Unless you're trying very hard to keep your frontal lobes under lock and key, The Ninth Wind will make you think. And re-think. Seriously, I've read a metric crap-ton of fantasy, and not much of it has made me contemplate anything beyond the plot at hand. Impressive. On some level, Siregar's characters are archetypal (which I like), and yet on another level he breaks from tropes. I think the most important theme, with all his characters, is that even though there are people whose goals seem detestable, whose actions make the reader uncomfortable, the author is able to present these with the rare insight that there truly are no villains. The motivations of each character are clear (except in cases where Siregar wishes to make them mysterious), and the reader can see how their actions are perfectly reasonable given their cultural background, even if those actions are at cross-purposes to other characters' goals. A point is being made here, and (in my opinion) it is that we need to begin recognizing the humanity of people all over the world, no matter how strange and different they may seem to us. That each of us is, to some extent, a product of our environments, and it is very easy for us to say what other people “ought to do” without having lived the exact same life that person has. This was probably my main takeaway from this book: the idea that everyone, everywhere, is doing what they think is right. It’s hard to hate even the “villains” with this knowledge in mind. Branching off from this notion, is another, more uplifting ideal, and that is, for example, in the figures of Rao and Lucia, leaders of the two respective nations of Pawelon and Rezzia, that there are still people who are able to see beyond the constraints of their social/religious heritage to greater patterns that affect not just one people, but all peoples. And that they not only are able to see this, but the take action, at great personal risk and typically the disapproval of their nation’s leadership, to do what they feel is the right thing. In the case of The Ninth Wind, this is often attempting to promote peace when everyone else is chomping at the bit for war. This book opens in the mountain territory of Andars and shows the betrayal and massacre of a people by the military of the neighboring kingdom of Rezzia. As the Andarans recuperate from their losses, Skye and his sister Idonea each vow, in their own separate ways, to be ready for the Rezzians next time. Skye through being the spirit of his Tria, the Andaran three man fighting unit, and Idonea through the forbidden magic of the volwa.Meanwhile, while there is a tenuous peace being held between the kingdoms of Rezzia and Pawelon, thanks to the efforts of their two leaders Queen Lucia and Rao, the Rajah, others among their respective leadership groups long to return to more traditional ideals, and those don’t include peace. These two heads of state have to negotiate the tricky waters of making their own people happy without starting another war like the one they scarified so much to end in The Black God’s War, the first book of this series. There is, of course, a journey, and our Andaran friends travel to seek support from Pawelon, should Rezzia become aggressive again. The religious leaders in Rezzia, not thrilled with having a woman leading the military in Queen Lucia, are actively trying to find a reason to return to Andars and bring the gods of Lux Lucis to “those heathens in the North”, as it were. I should stop here so as not to spoil the plot, suffice to say there is now a race to see if the right minds can be convinced to keep Andars and Rezzia from going to war. There are a number of other things going on, of course. Skye is trying to handle his spiritual role, and things are not going as well as he’d hoped. Idonea is growing in her magical abilities and is faced with successively more difficult decisions about what is right to do with her power. Queen Lucia wants peace but is being heaped with mounting pressure for battles in the name of her nation’s gods.Much like The Black God’s War, events will not go the way you assume, I don’t care how much fantasy you’ve read. Siregar will have you undecided until the final moments as to what the outcome will be. It is all both hopeful and wonderful, and tragic, much like the real world. The setup is perfect for the third book, and I do hope the author is scribbling away as we speak. But if there is a long wait, it will be my pleasure to go read the first two books again and get reacquainted. If you’re looking for something that will challenge your brain and your sense of certainty about humanity, all wrapped into a textured, tangible fantasy world, just do yourself a favor and one-click this book right now. Do eeeet.

A little long, but charged with great world building and philosophical weaving that will make an impression on you for days after you are done.As some other reviewers noted, it's quite apparent the author has spent a great deal of time building this rich world. The Andars, a place of forests, mountains, and magic, where various types of trees are conduits to specific powers. The relationship of the volwa (a kind of witch) to the woods and people of Andars, and the fact that the volwas are actually shunned by the very people they are sworn to protect. There are also the lands of Pawelon (full of sages) and Rezzia (people given power through the worship of their ten gods) revisited as our protagonists try to keep the Rezzians off their land and stop a war they know is comingThere are some amazing lines in this book. Among them, "The Ninth Wind told me, your life and death are a perfect expression of one time and one place, of one fantasy, one journey, one droplet among the countless dreams in the eternal starry sea."The plot has moments of brilliance although at times gets a little drawn out. Saved, though, by the author's weaving of philosophy and mythology into his world building.Strangely enough, I rather enjoyed revisiting with Rao and Lucia (characters from the prequel - The Black God's War) and felt more tied to them than I did the three main Children of Andars, Skye, Dag, and Idonea.I think this is because the Andars characters were written with a good deal of what I thought was over emotion or misplaced emotion. And the idea that the Andars folk had very strong community and personal values, yet still held secrets from one another because they didn't trust their own brothers or sisters (emotionally) to handle the information. As outcasts or "wildlings" I would have liked to see the Children of Andars be more honest and raw. I guess at times the Children of Andars, even the adults, seemed a lot like ... well, children. But they were innocent, lovable, and brutal at times in their strength and passion, and I'm sure these characters will resonate with a good many readers of epic fantasy. All that being said, there's a lot of brilliance at play here. The author has set some serious events in motion, a great story and plot leading into the next book which includes some amazing interplay between Rezzia's Ten Gods, and Wrath, a sort of dormant goddess of the Andars people. The sages of Pawelon even get in on the action, which is a nice little twist. If you enjoy sprawling epic fantasy, you will enjoy The Ninth Wind.

Violent crime is unusual in 1960s Montgomery, Illinois, a small industrial village just outside of Chicago. If something illegal occurs, the village’s size limits the number of suspects police chief John Rively must consider.

When the murder of a nineteen-year-old girl rocks normally quiet Montgomery, Rively quickly realizes this isn’t an ordinary case. Although a suspect was seen with the victim before her death, none of Montgomery’s residents seem to know who he is. Even the reason for death is unclear.

As Rively and his deputy Makay investigate, a series of suspicious events strike the village, all pointing toward a clever and careful killer who delights in causing fear and unrest. Faced with frustration at every turn, Rively begins to doubt his own judgement.

A burgeoning relationship provides Rively with some relief from the pressure of the investigation, but that pleasure turns to fear when it becomes apparent the killer has been watching Rively closely and has his sights set on the police chief’s romantic interest. Now, Rively finds himself personally involved in one of the most puzzling and murderous cases of his career. If he fails, he’ll lose so much more than an arrest.

It was really good but this book, for only being the 2nd book in a series, this book was totally AWESOME! It had me on the edge of my seat--it was really hard not to skip to the end and just find out who/what/why...!Seriously...if you want to try something different (and this is just me because that chapter had me looking over my shoulder): when you get this book, read chapter 36 first..THEN read the book. Yeah...you will totally not want to put this book down. The twist was just as awesome. I am looking forward to the next book.I dont know what else I can say w/out giving away the plot--Im excited to talk about it! LOL

I eagerly await the release of each book in the series and not once have I been disappointed. This book is just as fabulous as the four that preceded it full of twists and turns that you never see coming. It has plenty of laughs some romance and just the right amount of suspense.I cannot wait to see what Ms O'Connor has next for Xavier and Vic because i just loves these characters and the entire ramshackle group.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bravo! By Kristina Stutts Hats off to Liza O'Connor! This story is captivating from the first page. Liza's attention to detail is astonishing and it leaps off the pages. I loved this series from the beginning and this latest installment didn't disappoint. I loved the description of Cannon. Is he baby or is he part dog? Vic's cleverness continues to shine brightly alongside his counterpart, Xavier. I can't wait to gobble up the next in this series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love this book!! By LLB Pack of Trouble is a pack of excitement.1st Vic almost died while birthing a large cannonball (aka baby). She get a cesarean by a doctor who had never performed one before. Then she outwits Xavier. Sometimes chasing ladies is not the easiest way. Sometimes you just need lots of newspapers.Since neither Xavier nor Vic has a clue what to do with babies, lots of horror or humor occurs. (Depend on how you see matters). Finally they return to England with Cannonball & staff.Only a few hours after arriving Vic discovers the First Minister’s secret and a resentful x-staff member nearly kills her. You’ll never suspect the person who finds her. And that’s just the first half of the story.Liza O’Connor does it again! Fun, interesting historical facts, such as baby bottles killed a great deal of babies, and the multiple mysteries needing resolved will keep you reading from beginning to end.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Well Written, Well Told Story By josie Durand When I was asked to read a review copy and write a review for Willard Thompson's newest novel, Their Golden Dreams, I jumped at the chance. I have followed Thompson's literary career for the past 10 years and have watched his work evolve into some of the best prose and story telling in contemporary fiction writing today. Writing a trilogy and family saga, his first book, Dream Helper, begins with the story of first Indian baptized at Mission Santa Barbara during the Spanish period of California history. The saga continues with Delfina's Gold, which moves into the Mexican period of California history before statehood. His 3rd novel tells the story of California statehood and the beginning of the American period of California's rich history. Thompson tells the history of California through his captivating and engaging characters, always well drawn and defined, as well as many historical figures of the period, who make cameo appearances along the way, bringing history to life. These books stand alone, but the reading experience is enriched by reading all 3 novels. The opening chapter of each novel places the reader back into the final scene of the previous novel, but then quickly moves forward into the new story. Their Golden Dreams tells the story of the California gold rush, but it is not a gold rush story, but rather a story centered around all the different people who came to California to follow their dreams and what happened to them once they arrived during the often turbulent times. The story has many emotional moments, especially for those who know his characters and can feel the injustices of the time. The story moves from California to France and then back again. As a reader I wanted more, as a professional, I appreciate the clean style Thompson employs to let the characters tell the story, while he, the author stays out of the way. This book left me wanting more. I hope there will be a book four. Josie Durand reviewer.

Californios meet the Gold Rush By R Yull I've waited a long time for "Their Golden Dream" to come out and immediately ordered it In keeping with the beautiful old Californio tales of Mr. Thompson's previous books, Dream Helper and Delphina's Gold, Mr Thompson skillfully spins the story set in that budding era of our beloved California with romance , jealousy, rivalry, and the tough Western spirit of the day and clashing of cultures. He builds the romance of that time around points of history a period of time so unique and extraordinary. You feel you are with those early Californios as you become engrossed with the story. I love Mr. thompson's writing he's a suburb story teller. We are lucky someone is dedicated to writing these historical novels which are set in those early years when it was a land of extraordinary beauty, adventurous people and at the cusp of a whole new country. But Mr. Thompson does not forget the hardship of the time, the mistreatment of the Mexicans and Indians and the disrespect for these proud people and their ranchos. This book is particularly interesting in that the timing is around the gold rush when all hell broke loose in California. The once sleepy ranchos and easy pace of the inhabitants were about to be turned upside down. It is a gift of a fine writer to tell a story of a fictional life but done so well by the incorporation of many historical events and people that one almost thinks it is a true account. Mr thompson's 3 books belong together in every Californian's library.

By tami I have certainly enjoyed the opportunity I have had to read a advanced, review copy of Willard Thompson's novel Their Golden Dreams. The third in a trilogy it does not requre the previous novels to have been read but the series is more enriched by having the other 2 books under my belt---A deeper emotional connection to the characters from the start. I enjoyed the "voice" of this book as it is told from several differing character perspectives as events unfold---some overlapping, some separate but as you place yourself as a reader in the "shoes" of the characters you feel as though you are sharing the experiences with them. I often found myself vocalizing my emotions as I read, crying silent tears, cheering audibly or loudly proclaiming my dissatisfaction with various outcomes in the story! The book is an easy read, well paced and satisfying--great for a trip/plane read or a days escape on the beach read--- warning: Do not attempt to read this chapter by chapter and expect to be able to finish a chapter and put it down---WILL NOT HAPPEN! This author knows how to keep you engaged and coming back for more! So heads up--once you start you won't want to put it down until it has finished...and even then You will be wishing their was another chapter and you will be dying for the next book!( here's hoping there is one!)

"Praying God's Word" is a work by author Henry McBride that is the culmination of several years of conscientious reverent study of the Bible's New Testament Epistles and the direction given in them to those who want to adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the will of God. With all due diligence, Henry has transposed the admonitions and instructions given by the Apostle Paul and the authors of the other "Letters" into fluid, fervent personal prayers that are in the very words used by them. The universal applications from the Book of Romans through the Book of Jude has for centuries been self-evident and trusted in the pulpits, so why not use them as a basis for individual prayer? "Praying God's Word" is not just a book, it is an experience. It is not a tutorial; instead it is a face-to-face involvement with the God of Heaven. It is not the entirety of prayer, but an encouragement to prayer, for which there is neither substitute nor shortcut. It is the author's hope that you will begin a life altering conversation with God that will conclude when you hear Him say to you those long sought after words, "Well done you good and faithful servant!"

Praying God's Word, by Henry Mcbride

About the Author Henry McBride is a layman who was born, raised, and primarily educated in Evansville, Indiana, where he currently resides. His twenty-five-plus years in Southern law enforcement as well as his involvement in the development of lesson plans for high-liability/risk law enforcement has motivated him to speak of the infinite value and the practical daily application of God's Word in our ongoing march to a final spiritual victory. Henry's very personal tragedies and loss in his own family, as well as his law enforcement community, has given him an urgency to help others realize that our life is but a vapor that appears for a short time and then vanishes. Consequently, how should we then speak to the God of heaven?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. EXCITING HIGHLAND ADVENTURE By Rhonda K I consider Lauren Witting one of the best authors writing today, and she is a rare treasure. Highlander Redeemed continues Guardians of the Targe series. Open up the book, begin with page one, and escape on an adventure you will not soon forget. The heroine, Scotia MacAlpin, at 18 is no stranger to trouble with her latest incident forcing her clan into battle and resulting into her exile from the clan. She wants to eventually become a Guardian of the Targe, a mystical stone which bestows powers to the clan who possess it. She has the idea, as she is tired of standing in the shadow of her sister, of destroying the army determined to capture the relic her clan protects. Scotia has been reckless as well as restless throughout her life.Duncan of Dunlairig, while looking out for her throughout her life, recognizes the strength in her. When she becomes outcast, he is as well as he must still look after her. It is up to him to find her when she takes off on her own, doesn’t listen to anyone, and becomes headstrong. Helping her overcome her boredom he encourages her training and helps her become the warrior she wants to be. She discovers through her hard work and dedication to training that she has the gift of knowing. Can she use this to help destroy the enemy? She will soon be thankful for her skills as she will soon have to help the one who taught her.Duncan and Scotia bond, although it doesn’t come easy with her temperament, through friendship and grow closer through training and spending so much time together. She must fight her way back into the clan and prove she is worth being part of the clan.I highly recommend this and any other book written by Lauren Wittig. Her characters are strong, passionate, and each book of the Guardians of the Targe are fast paced page turning don’t want to lay down books. Anyone who enjoys passionate romance will enjoy this author.

By Edwina "I Love books" I Hated Scotia MacAlphin the Supposedly heroine of bk.3 Highlander Redeemed. there was noting redeemable about Scotia. I was hoping the English would kill her. She is one of the worst lead characters in a series that I have ever read. Scotia is 18 years old. She act like a child going through the terrible two's. She had caused the death of her Clansmen, she spoiled, reckless, unteachable, stubborn, mean, promiscuous like floozie. Scotia ruined the entire story for me. I only finished becasue I wanted Rowan and Jeanetter and the MacAlphin Clan to defeat King Edward. Duncan was crazy to even love this idiot of a girl, with noting but revenge on her mind. She was better served staying with her lover Conall MacGregor who we also, meet in bk1 and returns in bk2. I really felt sorry for Duncan. I gave Highlander Redeemed 2 stars instead of 1 star becasue I like all the other characters and the story behind The Highland Targe and its Guardians. When will authors learn you have to like the lead characters? By the time you get to anything close to good about Scotia your nearly at the end of the story!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Bad Heroine By Karol D. Trujillo The story was okay but I could not tolerate the immature Scotia. She was too unlikable of a female heroine. Nobody is that self centered and immature. And slow witted also. It darn near took her until the end of the book to realize she was a selfish idiot. I liked Duncan. These three sisters all ticked me off but when I start a series, I usually read them all.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A great reference for job interviews By V. Saporito This book covers a lot of topics, but the explanations are clear and concise and the examples are better than the ones you can usually find online.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An excellent topical review By Garth Somerville This book offers a "mile wide and (mostly) an inch deep" review of Java programming subjects. The depth of coverage for subjects varies. In most cases it is very appropriate but in some cases it is probably too thin and I expect Anthony will continue to build these out in future editions. This is not a book for learning about any particular subject in depth. It's great value is in providing a vast survey of Java related programming subjects to remind us of areas we are weak in or that have passed us by in our last job. Every Java programmer should feel competent with the core areas covered in the early chapters of the book. The remaining areas may or may not be relevant to our next job, but that is the point of reading through them - to uncover areas that need some further study before that next interview.I have interviewed many candidates for Java programming positions and it is clear that this book would have been money well spent for most of them. Don't be that person who can't explain the difference between a.equals(b) and a == b

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. get ready for your java interview By Jeanne Boyarsky “Java Interview Guide” was free on Amazon for a week and I downloaded it. It only costs six bucks to actually buy it though and it is well worth the money. Most of the book is a brief review of key concepts including sample interview questions and answers. Topics include basics, design patterns, reflection and AOP. While this content is succinct, it has what you need to know. Later in the book, there is a lsit of these interview questions together. There's also a chapter on approaching coding problems. The approach to solving them is good. It shows how to be methodical and solve the problem. I felt like the author defaulted to recursion which is odd. I understand he was trying to show a less optimal approach and then a better approach. But most people would think of a loop for a factorial as the first approach, not recursion. All in all, I liked the book. It's a great way to practice and prepare for a Java interview.

I have read and studied all of Martha Alderson's books and every one of them has been very helpful. It's important to note there are three writing levels--the big picture for which it is important to use the plot planner, then the scene level and the word level. After we have the first two down it's much easier to know what to write to give the message we wish to leave with our readers. This book is crucial for anyone who wants to write great scenes!

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent New Resource For My Writer's Toolbox By Russell Ricard Revved up after reading Martha Alderson and Jordan Rosenfeld’s Writing Deep Scenes (Plotting Your Story Through Action, Emotion, & Theme).I’m impressed with how this co-authored book reads as a singular voice throughout. There is a seamless, conversational tone that feels like a one-on-one coaching session with an editor or coach who encourages the writer to dig deeper, and move toward more exciting storytelling.First, there is an overview of plot, scenes, and scene types, and then Alderson and Rosenfeld delve more deeply into the layers of Action (“what happens”), Emotion (“how characters and readers feel throughout the journey”), and Theme (“the meaning produced in the process”). The author’s guide you toward stronger scene-by-scene, forward movement, and ultimately, a tighter and more engaging plot. There are expertly cited examples of both classical and modern literature, across genre, that illustrate Alderson and Rosenfeld’s points on how to effectively engage readers through plot—again with the use of scenes that delve further into Action, Emotion, and Theme. The role of emotion (“how characters and readers feel throughout the journey”) is, I find, something that is overlooked in writer’s how-to/reference books; however I feel it is a vital element of the craft of storytelling. That said, I particularly appreciate Alderson and Rosenfeld’s reminders of how emotion (in individual scenes and throughout the entire story one seeks to tell) can effectively serve a plot’s forward momentum—no matter the genre. As the author’s suggest, the deeper a writer delves into the Actions, Emotions, and Themes that build the scenes and plot of her, or his story, the better it will resonate with readers.I’m quite pleased to have this new inspirational, intellectually satisfying, and emotionally charged addition to my own writer’s toolbox. I’m certain that I’ll refer to Writing Deep Scenes time and again as I delve deeper into my own manuscripts.

Whether you're a beginner who wants to learn the fundamentals or an experienced writer looking to sharpen your skills, this book has great advice for making every scene count. One of my favorite tips was about making sure your scenes build real-time momentum rather than filling them with exposition or contemplation. Definitely something I need to work on. I'm so glad I found this book!

long pig. (among the Maori and Polynesian peoples) human flesh as food for cannibals. —Dictionary.com Barry and Jenny inherited a fortune, with a single stipulation: that they hunt down and eradicate the Tuskers. They can only hope the Tuskers are gone. They aren't sure they can follow through on the genocide of an entire new species. Genghis, the smartest and most ruthless of the Tuskers, survives. Deep in the desert, he breeds with the wild pig population. These mutants learn from humans, and quickly surpass them. Tuskers II continues Duncan McGeary's Wild Pig Apocalypse series.

Review "A fast-paced, wild ride that gets going right on page one, then races towards a suitably huge climax." —beauty-in-ruins.blogspot.com

About the Author A native Oregonian, Duncan McGeary has lived most of his life in Bend, Oregon, on the dry side of the Cascade Mountains, and his stories are often located in this western terrain. After graduating from the University of Oregon ("Go Ducks!") he returned to his hometown and had his first three fantasy novels published in the early '80s. He bought Pegasus Books in downtown Bend in 1984, got married to Linda, raised two sons, Todd and Toby, and spent the next 30 years running the bookstore, selling books, comics, games, and toys. Now with his store thriving ("if you're ever in Bend, come visit!"), he's devoting his creative energies to writing again.

Willingly Suspend Your Disbelief By Edea Pitre Baldwin The title of my review is what you may have to do when fully entering a world where pigs can talk, philosophize, and carry out Ancient Roman battle strategy! But this crazy train of a story is worth the ride.Ghengis, the physically and emotionally scarred Tusker from the first book, has become the Godfather of thousands of the Kin, the evolved Tuskers. Under his direction, they have carved out a hidden home and learned to control coyotes and ravens as well as the "normal" javelinas. Through the course of the story, humans are captured to become teachers and errand runners. You find yourself beginning to envision a world in which these psychotically hateful porkers might rule. But with education comes compassion and empathy, and there are Tuskers who decide human friends might not be so bad after all.The humans in the story who are holed up in a heavily fortified barn somehow take on less importance, until the battle begins. And then, the pages fly past and you just wish there were more of them because this battle is crazy nuts and terrible and great fun to read and imagine.Thank goodness there is a next volume to come in this saga! This is not your mama's Animal Farm.

By Donald Armfield The pigs have returned and they are far from needing education.McGeary has written a sequel that blows the first one out of the water. The second of the series of Tuskers has poked its way to the surface. The pigs have taken onto human instinct and the war from the humans continues to end the reign of the pigs.Tuskers 2 gives you a little more background about the Tuskers; How they evolved and what they want. The leader of the Tuskers wants blood spread and the fall of humans. Others want to live alongside humans. The Sci-fi twist in the second left me with a surprise, after reading the first novel I wasn't sure where the next one would take us readers. Excellent Read!!The Epilogue gives another twist that gives anticipation for the next. Readers will be waiting for the next installment. Pigs may never be looked at the same again.

The thought of fast learning intelligent porkers is scary. The use of capturing humans to help them learn how to fight wars an use weapons also taught some friendship an compassion. Not only is it a war on humans, it is now a war on pigs against pigs. I love McGeary's created mind. The book was shorter than the first an I was finished before I realized it was the end. I can't wait for the next one. Keep them coming.

Constantinople, 617 AD.

Chained up in a condemned cell, Rodi thinks it’s the last day of his life. It becomes the first. Though only fourteen, his brains and skill at forgery make him too valuable for the Roman Empire to waste on a public execution. The Lord Treasurer Alaric recruits him into a top secret security agency – his job, once trained, is to turn the tables in the Empire’s war with the so far victorious Persians. This is a story that takes you from the glittering palaces and sordid streets and brothels of the Imperial City, to the barbarian-ravaged provinces, to high mountain tops fringed with pine. Here, with no one to help but a naïve Christian missionary, Rodi must prove himself in a contest with the devotees of an obscene and bloody idol and a Persian spy. Can young Rodi survive and come out on top in this ruthless and secret Game of Empires…? 'Game of Empires' is a thrilling historical novella, perfect for fans of Simon Scarrow, Bernard Cornwall and Conn Iggulden. Praise for Richard Blake: “Fascinating to read, very well written, an intriguing plot and I enjoyed it very much.” Derek Jacobi, star of I Claudius and Gladiator “Vivid characters, devious plotting and buckets of gore are enhanced by his unfamiliar choice of period…. Nasty, fun and educational.” The Daily Telegraph “He knows how to deliver a fast-paced story and his grasp of the period is impressively detailed.” The Mail on Sunday “A rollicking and raunchy read . . . Anyone who enjoys their history with large dollops of action, sex, intrigue and, above all, fun will absolutely love this novel.” Historical Novels “It would be hard to over-praise this extraordinary series, a near-perfect blend of historical detail and atmosphere with the plot of a conspiracy thriller, vivid characters, high philosophy and vulgar comedy.” The Morning Star Richard Blake is a historian, broadcaster and university lecturer. He lives in Kent with his wife and daughter. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Game of Empires By Matt Hinds This review refers to a novella by Richard Blake/Dr.Sean Gabb, Game of Empires. It continues the series of novels starting with Conspiracies of Rome and falls in time after the last one Curse of Babylon but can be read alone. This is a short spy story. It comes from someone with a definite point of view (British libertarian and secular) yet he has a deep understanding of the period More understanding than other novelists and most professional historians. Set during the ghastly war between the Roman Empire and the Persian it is an important period (early 600's) to know something about. You see the fighting weakened both empires and allowed the religion of Islam to take over the Middle-East. You will find it easy to read with the characters speaking in a modern vernacular. Some would fault the whole thought processes of the characters as being "too modern," I do not. The spy-craft is fascinating. It doesn't have the detailed tapestry that the full novels have, perhaps this is the core of a novel which is yet to be published? Also I find some problem with the treatment of religion. This was a devout age by all accounts. The Christian faith was central to life in ways we would find hard to fathom. You don't gather every color of marble imaginable to build a church or seek to kill your opponent in obscure doctrinal differences without really really really believing. Yet the few devout characters in the story are depicted as starry-eyed fools or worse. Perhaps the author intends to say religion wasn't as important in the era as we think? In the earlier novels some have objected to the violence, drug use, necrophilia, sexuality, torture, a too early introduction of the Thematic System and other things. I'm uncomfortable occasionally but the plots & characters are plausible. The author also clearly believes the Emperor Heraclius was incompetent and gives the reigns successes to his underlings fictional Aelric and real Priscus and Patriarch Sergius. Given our present knowledge that's a stretch. But we won't be digging anytime soon in Syria or any other Islamic country to find out. Overall this novella like the other novels before it are very well worth reading.

What I like is the research on some of the murky aspects of various countries' dealings with the 3rd Reich. And in this book the horrific details of what was happening in Yugoslavia, gives you some background about the hatreds that erupted in the 90's.

Had I known it would have such a dreadful ending, I would have passed.Until the end, I found it a captivating story. The characters were realistic, it had great Civil War depictions and the heroine was a decent person and could stand on her own two feet. Some of the parts I found a little unbelievable or predictable, but nothing crazy. Then I got to the end. Oh, wait. There was no ending. The book stopped. Two things that drive me to not read an author again are ridiculous grammar/spelling issues and forcing a reader to get another book to finish a story. I enjoy series books but don't want to have to purchase another book to know how the story ends. Individual books should be stand alone or at least it should be clearly indicated you have to buy subsequent books in the series to see how things end.

60 of 62 people found the following review helpful. a Civil War adventure By Beverly Having thorougly enjoyed Snelling's Red River of the North series, I couldn't wait to read Daughter of Twin Oaks. In this book, the setting is a thoroughbred horse farm in Kentucky in the midst of the Civil War. Jesselyn's father and brothers are away in battle and she sends her younger sisters away to an aunt's home for safety. After her father comes home to die from his battle wounds, she realizes that she needs to get her horses away from Kentucky if she will have anything left to start over with after the war. Taking her little brother and her few now-freed slaves with her, they embark on a perilous journey where danger and adventure await them on every corner. A devout Christian, Jesselyn finds that her faith gradually slips away as they encounter pitfall after pitfall. By the end of the book, she has quit praying altogether and is blaming God for the war. Meanwhile, her sisters in Richmond find love and happiness with soldiers that they meet and reunite with their long-lost brother, now wounded from battle. Unlike Jesselyn, they retain their faith in God, even when Louisa's soldier is declared missing and probably dead. This book was good and kept me reading, and I want to read the second one because so many loose ends were left. Will Jesselyn ever get all of them to safety? Will she ever give her heart back to God? Will Louisa's true love return? Will Twin Oaks still remain when they get back home? Anyone who enjoys historical Christian fiction will like this book.

By A Customer I'm usually disappointed in a lot of books, since usually the story itself would be excellent except the characters are undeveloped and the plot isn't good with a bad ending. This book was excellent, and will be one of my favorites for a long time. "Jesse" and Louisa are two lovable characters, and their stories keep you reading. Since one chapter would be about "Jesse" and the next about Louisa, I couldn't stop reading so that I could find out what happened to each of them! :o)
