By A Customer David Elginbrod is a remarkable work in that it embodies the finest elements of style, characterization, plot and subplot development, and, of course, content or worth. Without appropriate content a book is a virtual wasteland after which the disillusioned reader feels as though he has sojourned in the desert, and, having encountered numerous mirages that promised but failed to provide relief, finds himself parched in spirit and soul with no oasis in sight. This book will elicit the full gamut of emotions as well as provide a welcome array of spiritual and intellectual stimuli. The main character, Hugh Sutherland, is introduced as a congenial young man who wishes no more than to make his way in the world. After the death of his father he is forced by financial constraints to seek employment in order to complete his education. This employment is, of course, as a tutor on a small Scottish estate where he encounters the estate foreman or steward, David Elginbrod and his daughter, Margaret or Maggie. Sutherland finds the Elginbrod family, although Christian in word and deed, to his liking when compared with the severe and mean manner of his employer. As a result, he finds himself at the Elginbrod cottage whenever time will permit, and begins tutoring both father and daughter. Although Hugh believes himself to be the educator, he will learn as he matures and discovers the various trials and tribulations that lie in his path that it was David, not he, who was, in fact, the real tutor. MacDonald has excelled in the characters of David and Margaret Elginbrod, while providing a practical application of their teachings in the lives of Hugh Sutherland and those with whom he comes in contact. Not only an exceptional spiritual work, David Elginbrod weaves a tale of ghosts, mysticism, the supernatural, and love in such a manner as to be both educational, spiritually-uplifting, and spellbinding. My sole regret was when I encountered the final page. I was prepared to begin anew. I invite you to join Hugh Sutherland as he learns that it is not position, education, prominence, or power that makes a man, but the willingness to serve, with joy and humility, his fellowman thereby doing his Father's will.

Goerge MacDonald is the man By A Customer With such an amazing perception of human nature (complete with lumps and hard angles we all have but many authors ignore) George makes the characters live outside of the paper it is written on. There are times when you wish to reach through the pages of the novel and shake Hugh and yell "Don't you see? Watch out for the..." Of course you feel silly talking to the book but great ones will do that to a person, and assuredly, this is a great book. Full of truth (from one who was close to it) and unique and subtle twists, George touches on so many subjects and thoughts that the Victorian era seems alive to the modern reader. Keep a notepad handy to record all the wonderfully concise quotes in this gem.

Have you read Phantastes By The ArchMage George MacDonald is always Fantastic!Have you read Phantastes, Lilith, The Wise Women, Thomas Thomas Wingfold, Unspoken Sermons? My one grip is the poor formatting. The typeface is so small that its takes away from the reading pleasure. There is a large border of about an inch on each page; this should have been made smaller to allow for a larger typeface.

I carry it everywhere I go By Anna Harbaugh This book features a selection of Roman and Greek myths, in addition to several short summaries of stories such as the Iliad, the Alliad, and the Oddesy. In addition, it contains many passages from such poets as Homer, Shakespeare, and several others of a more modern origin. Written in fine, if rather flowery script, this book portrays its myths just as one would assume the ingenious writers and story tellers who created them would like them to be told. A vast accomplishment, this document has been printed and reprinted ever since it was first written over a hundred years ago. Every known god or goddess is allotted their tales, which include various versions, stating the details that differ from version to version. Colorful descriptions of each deity are accompanied by a complete list of their many different names. Both new and old versions of the book are still available. As an added bonus, it does not have a bias towards other religions, but approaches the subject in a slightly more scientific manner.

I thought that I would never even remember the name of it let alone find it for sale somewhere!! I am so astounded and thrilled. This is the finest mythology text of ALL time. For Greek/Roman mythology lovers everywhere this is a MUST read. The 1893 edition (hardbound) has all of the original published "prints" in it and later reprints (Dover paperbacks) don't, so I've been told. I dearly love this book...memories evoked. I've managed to find two of the first editions!!

By Sophi The only reason that I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because while it has many stories within it, I was hoping for a few more. The book itself and the contents are amazing as far as I'm concerned though!

The night before Daisy dies in her hospice bed, Dorothy, her lifelong friend, witnesses her mysterious dying words. The meaning only becomes clear after reading Daisy’s diaries, left to Dorothy in her will. Dorothy and Daisy first met during the war-torn, turbulent years of their young lives and shared many experiences tinged with tragedy, hardship and loss but also filled with love and humour. The diaries reveal cameos of Dorothy’s life after the war; first in Singapore, as a young colonial wife and mother; then in Oxford telling of her ups and downs and travels through the decades. As the intertwined lives of the two friends are exposed, a secret is revealed and its consequences have long-reaching effects on the lives of Dorothy and her family.

Great World's Fair Mystery By BONNIE MURACH If you enjoy historical fiction and especially if you're from the Chicago area, this is a great book that tells you the history the World's Fair. The Museum of Science and Industry is all that's left of the Fair and it's great to learn about the rest of the Fair in such an entertaining fashion. It's exciting and easy to read and enjoy.

Well Done By Dan Buchler Very interesting reading with the way Mr. Bedeker weaves the story lines of a serial killer praying on attendees to the Chicago Worlds Fair with the happenings going on at the fair. The characters are engaging and the dynamics of such individuals as Wild Bill Cody, Thomas Edison and Tesla arehistorically accurate. Entertaining and informative. A must read! 5 Stars

Doctor Margaret in Delhi is Book 2 of The Azadi Series and a sequel to, Book 1: Doctor Margaret's Sea Chest. This historical fiction novel continues with Margaret's journey from the time she and her Canadian husband participated in the 1854 Crimean War. Doctor Margaret travels alone to India to be with her parents at the American Presbyterian Mission at Futtehgurh, and then on to her posting at a hospital in Delhi. There she has to not only overcome work pressures, but also deal with her intimidators and intrigues of the Mughals, at the Delhi Red Fort. Margaret's tormenter since her childhood, Captain Albert, also joins a British regiment bound for service in India. The Russian, Captain Count Nicholai, whom Margaret had met in Crimea, also arrives in India under the guise of a French physician. The events leading up to the Indian Mutiny/Rebellion that breaks out in 1857 profoundly affect not only Margaret's life, but also of those who love her and others’ who wish her harm. Also, mixed-up in the bedlam is one of the Delhi King's Red Fort's Guards sepoys, Sharif Khan Bhadur, the grandfather of Doctor Wallidad, an American doctor. The Azadi Series covers the exciting events and turmoil that enflamed India from 1857 to 1947, and led to her independence. Those incidences engulf the characters of this story at that time, and then later their descendant's lives, again in the 1960s.

A captivating, enjoyable read By Miranda Waheed Rabbani’s novel Doctor Margaret in Delhi—the second in The Azadi Series—is a captivating historical fiction novel chronicling the life of Doctor Margaret Wallace. After the tragic loss of her beloved husband Robert in the Crimean War, a pregnant Doctor Margaret travels to India where she intends to start a new life as the first female doctor at the hospital in Delhi. First reuniting with her estranged missionary parents and siblings in Futtehgurh, Margaret remains with them until she gives birth to her third child, in the meantime teaching English to the local Nawab and dealing with the advances of potential suitor Colonel Humphrey.Margaret soon travels to Delhi and begins her work at the hospital, settling into her new life. She eventually finds a home with Sharif Khan—the ancestor of Doctor Wallidad Sharif, who is writing Margaret’s biography in 1967—and his family. But the arrival of her longtime nemesis, the villainous Lieutenant (Captain) Albert Miller, and the continued pursuit by the amorous Colonel Humphrey make things difficult for her. Will Margaret be able to avoid those who wish to do her harm or fall prey to their evil machinations?Self-published in 2015, Doctor Margaret in Delhi is filled with compelling, relatable characters and rich, believable settings. Fascinating historical details and events are brilliantly weaved throughout the story. A fair bit of the Indian dialect is used throughout, but a glossary is provided that helps with the translation of most words. This novel is a sequel to Rabbani’s Doctor Margaret’s Sea Chest, and while Doctor Margaret in Delhi stands on its own for the most part, I recommend reading the first book in the series before this one, as there are occasions where events from the first novel are mentioned and not expanded upon, which may cause some mild confusion for new readers. Geared toward adults, this novel is a truly enjoyable read.Waheed Rabbani is a splendid storyteller, and I cannot wait to read his next novel, which I hope will be the next book in The Azadi Series. I highly recommend this novel to historical buffs and to anyone who wants to read a truly delightful story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Jane Austen goes to India By Shane K. Joseph “Jane Austen goes to India” is how I would describe this novel, the second in the series of adventures of Dr. Margaret. After the tragic loss of her husband in the Crimean War (covered in Book 1), Dr. Margaret Wallace, pregnant with her third child, arrives in Calcutta in a bid to be re-united with her estranged parents and siblings who are missionaries in Futtehgurh. Offered a job in a hospital in Delhi, she traverses the country by boat and road, giving us the historical and geographical armchair tour, and uncovering the simmering conflict between the ruling British and India’s former rulers, the Nawabs and Maharajahs, who are being slowly edged into retirement by their interfering colonial masters. She is also the magnet for lonely men like Colonel Humphrey, who looks for every opportunity to seduce the pregnant widow and shows his contempt for her whenever she rebukes him. To add to Margaret’s woes, her nemesis, Captain (now reduced to Lieutenant) Albert Miller, who was responsible for her husband’s death in the Crimea, has also transferred to India and is out to settle past scores. Margaret sympathizes with the locals, ignores the class distinctions practiced by both sides, and is outspoken about British duplicity, putting herself in harm’s way; she can only rely on a sepoy, Sharif Khan, and his immediate friends and family, to protect her.The pace of this novel is slow, like a leisurely ride on the Ganges. Margaret, who narrates most of the novel, is a virtuous and cultured lady, who is precise about every detail in her recounting; I would even call her a nit-picker. We see the broader conflict brewing in India through her lens and through the domestic activities that she is engaged in. In the name of propriety, she has to submit to situations that open her to danger and scandal, like going on an innocuous horse ride with Colonel Humphrey who is having difficulty keeping his hands on the reins, like delivering a perilously positioned baby of a Moslem woman, and like treating the Queen of Delhi with belladonna - poisonous if taken in large doses. She is also faced with the constant moral choice of either becoming the mistress of her amorous pursuer and having the material comforts of life taken care of, or standing by her principles and remaining poor and separated from her other children in Canada.Given the author’s interest in history, we are taken on detours to discover the legends behind the “Black Hole of Calcutta,” “The Kohinoor Diamond,” and “The Fishing Fleet.” We also encounter breakthroughs in medical science that occurred at the time: Margaret experimenting with perineum episiotomies to deliver babies, and the removal of the appendix. Although we sympathize with the Indians for losing control of their country, we wonder why those Nawabs and Maharajahs didn’t get off their asses and clean their palaces, relying instead on funding from the British to hire more servants to do their menial jobs? Doesn’t God help those who help themselves, as Margaret epitomizes? While I enjoyed the history, I was not enamoured by the way in which the lesson was delivered: always in obvious “question and answer” dialogue; perhaps the use of a variety of devices such as exposition, epistolary, and oral storytelling may have helped. This book, like its predecessor, is a good fictional rendition of history from an original angle, that of a progressive woman of her time, battling not only the events of history but also the restrictions on her gender. In particular, this novel covers the events leading to the first Indian Revolution of 1857, a milestone in history that is somewhat overshadowed by the events of 1947 that ultimately led to self-government. But the seeds were sown back then, during Dr. Margaret’s time, and I am grateful to the author for sharing this genesis with us.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great book to read By diana silva book received from Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for an honest reviewThis book, Doctor Margaret in Delhi by Waheed Rabbani was an easy book to like. One I really enjoy reading about India and it's history. I'm often frustrated with myself with how little I know. It's history is so interesting and fascinating. I really liked how Rabbani combined the elements in this story. The pacing was great, the characters interesting and the setting fantastic. Although the second book in the series, I did not find that I missed out although it would have been nice to read the previous book first. Dr. Margaret Wallace was a fantastic character to read about. She was an inspiring heroine. I really enjoyed reading about the cultural conflicts with the English and the tensions that arose. The attention to detail that the author used in this story made it come alive and I was quickly transported to India with Doctor Margaret. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a strong heroine in a fascinating time period with an equally fascinating country

By Lyryal Adelaide "Calamity" Sinclair is beginning to hate airships... or, maybe, she just hates airships in which she is flying North, well past the Sworn Territories, while being shot at by Vikings who just happen to be firing Breguet cannons... as she and her companions (Lucas Steele and Agent Grace Abarre) head for Mount Hadrata - over land and sea, by Airship and Steamhorse, and occasionally on foot - to dismantle the mysteries at the heart of the Crimson Gear.In the process they encounter giant eagles, Æther Quartz (the discovery of which brings myth into potentially terrifying reality), and a madman bent on the destruction of everything they hold dear. The Gears & Gunfighters series is strongly reminiscent of Beadle's serialized "Dime Novels" in the fast paced action of the series, and interestingly sympathetic main characters, leaving me waiting with anticipation for each installment. And, checking an inflation calculator, the Kindle versions of this series are comparably priced - except with more pages, and better covers. (Wow, something that's a better value for your money than way back when, she says as she reaches for the button to click for the next purchase, and begin reading the next series....)

A phenomenal adventure with charming characters come to an end in a way, although an epilogue promises a continuation of sorts into the special world Mercier has created for us. Equally strong in plot (which culminates into spectacular climax) and character development (the most emotional of the series), we are fighting to read the pages backwards, unwilling to reach the last one.

Good guys Can die, bad guys Can triumph. Dark yet hopeful, this is also a fast action thriller that keeps the reader turning the pages. Oh, and Steampunk to provide a wonderful visual background.

Not one thing. The author would mention something actually interesting, even a couple things I didn't already know, and then... FUGHETABOUTIT, on to the next "tip". Not so much as a clue as to where I could find the actual answer.

The author explains everything from the types of decks used in different formats to online resources. These are just "tips," so it's not the most comprehensive study, but I definitely feel that I gained more knowledge about the game.

Little rough around the edges--but there is a good story in there if you have patience By lawboss For starters, this book is a very good value (plenty of length) and has enough action to keep your interest. If, however, you prefer a more polished read -- this book will give you fits of frustration. The read is not very well edited; there are spell check insertions of the wrong words and an annoying amount of repetitive sentences (almost as if the book was edited and the sentences were not taken out). The author does, however, tell a nice story. Even with the poor editing, I enjoyed the read and believe the next book will be better as the author improves. I would buy a next book in the series if one was offered. If you are looking for a promising book, at a good price with plenty of action (and are not Type A about editing)--I recommend the read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Scifi with lots of action! By PL Trent Falls' "Chaos Tactics," book 1 in the Reckless Chronicles series, is a sci-fi adventure story that follows one man's race to save Earth. The main character, John Carn, is a retired sergeant in the Earth Expeditionary Force Marine Corps, who is begrudgingly pulled into a mission to save Earth. There are a lot of sci-fi elements in the book, from spaceships to futuristic weaponry, but the sci-fi elements are not overbearing or heavy in long-winded lore. There's a lot of action and adventure in the story from gun battles to high speed space travel. If you like approachable sci-fi with lots of action, you'll enjoy this book. Looking forward to book 2!

The edges of space, the far distant future, an era even the Time Lords are not supposed to visit. Laid claim to by disputing factions of humans and Chelonians, the planet Barclow has become the catalyst for an unusual war. In two hundred years of hostilities not a shot has been fired, and the opposing combatants are the best of friends. But when the Doctor, Romana and K9 arrive, they discover the peace is not going to last. Something dangerous is happening behind the scenes. An election loom. Bodies are piling up. Tensions are growing. Someone, somewhere is trying to make this well-mannered war very angry indeed. Only the Time-travellers can save the day. But that might be their biggest mistake. One of two releases this month adapting popular Doctor Who novels from the 1990's. The Well-Mannered War was originally written by Gareth Roberts - now a TV writer on shows including Doctor Who itself. Tim McInnerny is a familiar face from TV and film, though to British audiences is probably best know as Captain Darling from Blackadder Goes Forth. John Leeson, the voice of robot dog K9 is now a regarded writer on the subject of food and wine.

A very English ending By Amazon Customer The TARDIS approaches its maximum distance into the future, and the Doctor forces an emergency materialisation to prevent its destruction. The TARDIS crew find themselves arrive on Barclow, which is a planet claimed by both the humans and the Chelonians, who are waging a war in a very polite fashion (hence the title). But there are also other matters afoot, and a great enemy (whose identity I'm not at liberty to divulge here) is behind a complex plot to destroy the Doctor. Oh, and K9 runs for president as well...This book is the last of Virgin's Missing Adventures series, featuring past incarnations of the Doctor. The decision not to renew Virgin's license plays a subtle role throughout the book, up to an including the very tongue-in-cheek ending. The Doctor and Romana are yet again well characterised by Gareth Roberts, and the return of the Chelonian (originally created by Gareth Roberts for the seventh Doctor novel, 'The Highest Science') make a welcome return. The book also looks at a few other important aspects of Doctor Who history and plays a role in setting up the Bernice Summerfield adventure series that Virgin published following BBC re-claiming the Doctor Who license. It is both a great book and important for defining what was to come.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's an end, but the moment has been prepared for. By A Customer This novel commemorates two endings - it's the last of Virgin's Missing Adventures, set at the end of the period during which Graham Williams produced the TV series. The book consequently has a slightly more melancholy tone than Gareth Roberts' other Missing Adventures, but the wit that made his other stories such a joy to read is still present. The Chelonians - the militaristic giant tortoises featured in Roberts' New Adventures The Highest Science and Zamper - are back, but they're not the villains this time round. The main enemy is initially revealed as a darkness, though there's more to it than that. Then again, there's more to almost everything in TWMW than meets the eye. The last episode (the story being structured as a classic four-parter) has an impressive selection of twists, and a thought-provoking conclusion. TWMW includes plenty of bizarre and witty concepts of the type so often found in Roberts' work and the DW era in which the story is set. The sequence with the possessed photocopier is arguably the best fusion of the comic and the chilling ever to be found in DW in any format. Definitely worth getting if the opportunity presents itself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WOW! That should say it all. By John Misiewicz Mr. Roberts has written a masterpiece! This book kept me guessing until the very end. Not only was the ending quite a surprise, it was also a very logical ending. Furthermore, getting to the end of this many-paged Dr. Who book happens very quickly as each page leaves the reader anxious to get to the next. This tale was told the way a Dr. Who story needs to be told. Each chapter was a cliffhanger; the Doctor was his wonderfully charasmatic self (as only Tom Baker could portray); K-9 was fabulous (I don't care what others say, I like K-9!); and Romana is simply charming (I love the final scene between the Doctor and Romana). Having not read the New Adventure The Highest Science, I cannot say if the Chelonians are accuratly portrayed in this novel. However, being both a history teacher and a prior military serviceman, - history is full of examples of how enemy soldiers developed friendships- I can appreciate the friendships displayed between the Chelonians and the humans in The Well-Mannered War. All in all, well worth buying at any price. If you are lucky enough to find it, buy it before someone else beats you to it!

Mrs. Burrough's new time travel " Man Of Her Dreams" not only fulfilled my need to escape but took me to an Era and Country I'd never imagined. Through her extensive research and excellent storytelling ability, I lived the entire story as if I actually was a part of that long ago time. "Man of Her Dreams" has it all, adventure, a little mystery and a lot of real life drama and romance set in the time when Vikings roamed the earth. Sit back, relax and expect to be taken on an adventure that will leave you wishing time travel was a reality. Loved this story from the first page to the last. "Man of her Dreams" is a five star read for any fiction lover.

Against her wishes, she is sent away by her clever mother to obtain the scholastic education needed to survive in this man’s world. Sammy Blue is forced to abandon her dreams of a life with Jamie Scott and endures a harshly realistic lesson in life, while Jamie survives his own wretched fate.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Write On! By C. Butler The Write Path is the right stuff for both the experienced and the up-and-coming writer. Yes, it's instructional, but mostly it's inspirational. Full disclosure: Lauren was a colleague at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. There, she enjoys the esteem of faculty and students alike. Unfortunately, though, for me I never got to sit in on one of her classes. The Write Path provides that opportunity. Each bite-size chapter delivers more than you might expect. You'll enjoy it -- and refer back to it often.

Kessler's essays are alternately (and sometimes simultaneously) hilarious, moving, and inspiring. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves to write or read.
