Had I known it would have such a dreadful ending, I would have passed.Until the end, I found it a captivating story. The characters were realistic, it had great Civil War depictions and the heroine was a decent person and could stand on her own two feet. Some of the parts I found a little unbelievable or predictable, but nothing crazy. Then I got to the end. Oh, wait. There was no ending. The book stopped. Two things that drive me to not read an author again are ridiculous grammar/spelling issues and forcing a reader to get another book to finish a story. I enjoy series books but don't want to have to purchase another book to know how the story ends. Individual books should be stand alone or at least it should be clearly indicated you have to buy subsequent books in the series to see how things end.

60 of 62 people found the following review helpful. a Civil War adventure By Beverly Having thorougly enjoyed Snelling's Red River of the North series, I couldn't wait to read Daughter of Twin Oaks. In this book, the setting is a thoroughbred horse farm in Kentucky in the midst of the Civil War. Jesselyn's father and brothers are away in battle and she sends her younger sisters away to an aunt's home for safety. After her father comes home to die from his battle wounds, she realizes that she needs to get her horses away from Kentucky if she will have anything left to start over with after the war. Taking her little brother and her few now-freed slaves with her, they embark on a perilous journey where danger and adventure await them on every corner. A devout Christian, Jesselyn finds that her faith gradually slips away as they encounter pitfall after pitfall. By the end of the book, she has quit praying altogether and is blaming God for the war. Meanwhile, her sisters in Richmond find love and happiness with soldiers that they meet and reunite with their long-lost brother, now wounded from battle. Unlike Jesselyn, they retain their faith in God, even when Louisa's soldier is declared missing and probably dead. This book was good and kept me reading, and I want to read the second one because so many loose ends were left. Will Jesselyn ever get all of them to safety? Will she ever give her heart back to God? Will Louisa's true love return? Will Twin Oaks still remain when they get back home? Anyone who enjoys historical Christian fiction will like this book.

By A Customer I'm usually disappointed in a lot of books, since usually the story itself would be excellent except the characters are undeveloped and the plot isn't good with a bad ending. This book was excellent, and will be one of my favorites for a long time. "Jesse" and Louisa are two lovable characters, and their stories keep you reading. Since one chapter would be about "Jesse" and the next about Louisa, I couldn't stop reading so that I could find out what happened to each of them! :o)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I would recommend it. Worth Reading! By Kerry Ruby is a common programming language. Ruby programming language supports multiple programming paradigms including object-oriented, procedural, imperative and functional. Thanks to this book, you will become an expert in this since you will be guided through the issues which are viewed as complex in python. The main reason why Ruby is liked by programmers is due to its simple syntax. I think this book to be one of the best programming language which I have found.

As I already have knowledge of programming languages like Java & C++ so learning Ruby is easy for me. I like to learn new languages of this computer world. This is step by step guide to install Ruby, how to create databases, what are array, hashes and syntax error. I learned how to execute code. Now I understand basics and can solve different problems and errors. This is very helpful for me. Must recommended.

In 1917, while the world is at war, Alma and her children are living in a sleep-out at the back of Mrs Lovett's house in working-class Footscray. When Alma falls pregnant, her daughter Molly is born in secret. As Molly grows up, there is a man who sometimes follows her on her way to school.

Anna meets Neil in 1952 at her parents' shack at Cockatoo. She later enters a Salvation Army home for unmarried mothers, but is determined to keep her baby.

Fitzroy, 1975. Student life. Things are different now, aren't they? Cathy and David are living together, determined not to get married. Against the background of the tumultuous events of the sacking of the Whitlam government, a new chapter is added to the family's story.

The Mothers is a book about secrets. It interweaves the intimate lives of three generations of Australian women who learn that it's the stories we can't tell that continue to shape us and make us who we are.

Rod Jones’s first novel, Julia Paradise (1986), won the fiction award at the 1988 Adelaide Festival, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award and was runner-up for the Prix Femina Étranger. It has been translated into ten languages and is now available as a Text Classic. His four other novels, Prince of the Lilies, Billy Sunday, Nightpictures, and Swan Bay, have all either won or been shortlisted for major literary awards.

Rod Jones lives near Melbourne. The Mothers is his most recent novel.

'Rod Jones’ The Mothers is beautifully written and deeply poignant. One of the most satisfying Australian novels I’ve read in years.' Alex Miller

‘I was captivated by the humanity and heart of the characters. Rod Jones has created a vivid and compelling world and I cared about everyone in it.’ Toni Jordan

‘With depth and insight, Jones explores maternal-filial love.’ Books & Publishing

‘Quietly moving...If you like Colm Toíbín’s work, I’m sure you will love this book. The Mothers is a terrific achievement for Jones.’ Readings

‘This is a big-hearted novel, and it is an affecting tribute to generations of Australian mothers who have been unjustly treated.’ Saturday Paper

‘[The Mothers] gives us a rich panoply of characters, places, and issues. The overall effect is rather like that of looking through a box of faded photographs, turning each one in the light, hearing something of their story, bringing lost faces and eras to life.’ Australian Book Review

‘Big-hearted…an ambitious work, combining social history set in Melbourne suburbs not yet gentrified, with personal stories of birth, shame and identity.’ Booktopia Buzz

'Jones has done something unexpected. He has uncovered a magnanimity and generosity of spirit that has not been seen in his novels before now...It has more depth and a weight that feels far more like the authentic quick of life.’ Age/SMH/Brisbane Times

‘You will feel this novel in the depths of your being...Jones does not hold back from portraying the suffering and loneliness of these poor women on whom society turned its collective back. It’s an eye-opener for those of us fortunate enough to be born post-1970.’ Good Reading

‘A social history that interrogates motherhood and mothering in a way that I haven’t come across before.’ ANZ LitLovers

‘[Jones] writes with depth and understanding of the joys and angst of taking the plunge into motherhood…It is sad and heart-wrenching at times. Yet, it is beautifully written and while the angst felt for the characters is all to real, their stories are masterfully told.’ Weekly Times

By 125Pages Original review @ 125Pages.comThe Mothers was a unique look at three generations of women; all with a big similarity at the heart of them. While strong, these women struggled to overcome the situations life threw at them. Spanning from the early 1900’s to modern times, it showed how far reaching one person’s decisions can go.The plot for The Mothers was great. Very intricate and with so many winding storylines that somehow all tied together. The writing of Rod Jones was fine, however he tended towards over acting and not enough heart at the core of it. The pacing had some issues. It spanned almost a century and at times jumped too quickly into the next time period. The world built was also a bit flat. Jones tended to focus on the characters and less on the world they inhabited. The characters at the heart of The Mothers were for the most part fantastic. They had a real sense of self, but were also very dependent on others. One character, David, was awful and dragged down every scene he was in. There were some nice emotions in The Mothers but unfortunately they were tempered by the over acting of a few key persons. The Mothers had so much going for it. Strong emotions, characters you wanted to connect with and some interesting history. Unfortunately it was dragged down by a few bad characters and some overwrought scenes. It was not a bad read, but Rod Jones tended towards over dramatic when playing it simply would have been much more powerful. I did enjoy reading The Mothers for the most part, but never really felt a part of the read.I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

In addition, it seemed difficult to understand the author's intentions in telling the chosen stories. I did like the book, but would not read it again. Thanks to NetGalley for a complementary ARC.

Aurora of North Manitou Island (Great Lakes Romances Book 5), by Donna Winters

About the Author Donna Winters adopted Michigan as her home state in 1971 when she moved from a small town outside of Rochester, New York. She began penning novels in 1982 while working full time for an electronics firm in Grand Rapids. She resigned from her job in 1984 following a contract offer for her first book. Since then, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Zondervan Publishing House, Guideposts, Chalfont House, and Bigwater Publishing LLC have published her novels. Her husband, Fred, a former American History teacher, shares her enthusiasm for history. Together, they visit historical sites, restored villages, museums, and lake ports purchasing books and reference materials for use in Donna’s research. When Donna was researching the story of Aurora, she and her husband embarked on their first wilderness camping trip to North Manitou Island in the summer of 1992. They pitched their tent two miles from the former lighthouse grounds and ventured out each day with camera, notebook, and pen, to visit the settings described in this book. Donna has lived all of her life in states bordering on the Great Lakes. Her familiarity and fascination with these remarkable inland waters and her residence in the heart of Great Lakes Country make her the perfect candidate for writing Great Lakes Romances©.

Aurora of North Manitou Island By Lollipops Aurora loved Harrison, but when he didn't show up with the preacher on their wedding day, she knew he was dead. Luckily he wasn't, but he'd been badly injured in a boating accident. When the weather calmed, some friends took Aurora to Harrison, but he refused to marry her, thinking that he'd never be more than half a man.Aurora was stubborn and refused to take no for an answer, and so was Harrison's new housekeeper, Serilda Anders. Aurora is convinced that Harrison is really in love with Serilda, but she doesn't know whether to go home or to stay and hope Harrison regains his health and his senses.AURORA OF NORTH MANITOU ISLAND is fifth in Ms. Winter's Great Lake Romances series, set, obviously, in Michigan. It seems that years and years ago I happened across one of these books in a store somewhere in Michigan, but for whatever reason I didn't buy it. I do remember seeing it though. The story is fairly predictable, but it was interesting seeing what would happen to the characters to get them from the beginning to the end. I didn't really grow to care for any of them, and the head-hopping was jarring, drawing me out of the story. However, if you are interested in a historical romance set in very real tourist spots in Michigan, then you'll want to pick up Aurora of North Manitou Island or any of Ms. Winter's other romances.

The author had excellent advice on everything except for time management. Instead, she expressed her gratitude to her husband, who worked full-time in some non-writing occupation, and whose salary paid for their three-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. One of her challenges for carving out writing time was getting distracted by her child’s nanny.Having neither husband, nor someone else financially supporting me, nor a view of the Hudson River from my living room, nor domestic help, nor even a child (although that is one distraction I would welcome), I had a hard time relating. I’m sure all of the challenges seemed real to her, but my take-away was without either finding a spouse who was willing to support me or winning the lottery, I was doomed to the ranks of “hobby” (ugh) scribblers. There were writers, and then there were the “rest of us”, with day jobs, households, and people (both relatives and non-relatives) picking away at our precious writing time, so by the time we were done "everything else" and could sit down and write, we were just as likely to fall asleep.Write a Novel in 10 Minutes is the writing book for "the rest of us": the writers who are trying to juggle their writing dreams with life’s demands. Katharine Grubb has written a book full of down-to-earth, use-it-now advice, all broken down into sections which can be read and then acted upon in ten-minute chunks. The first few sections of the book discuss how to work in ten-minute bursts so that each of the ten minutes is used well, and how to ensure that there are ten-minute bursts that you can write in. I liked Grubb’s task/reward approach: fold the laundry, write for ten minutes. Make the kids breakfast, write for ten minutes. I’m writing this portion of the review having just finished eating lunch at work, and now I’m... writing for ten minutes. The paragraphs before this one were completed on my phone, on the subway.Every chapter ends with one or more exercises to help the reader take action and put into practice what the chapter discussed. The most interesting exercises, for me, were the ones to help someone assess what needed to be done in a household and who was going to do it. Never mind writers — anyone who has their own home should do these. After the chapters on work rhythm and time management, Write a Novel in 10 Minutes discusses story-telling, and specifically novel-writing, in a structured way, with each chapter covering one aspect the writer needs to consider. At first, these sections surprised me, because I couldn’t initially see what they had to do with the earlier chapters. Once I got into reading them, however, it made sense. If you’re writing in ten-minute chunks, you don’t have time to dither around. You need to know exactly what your next task will be.Write a Novel in 10 Minutes is generously seasoned with examples and quoted passages from well-known works of literature, and written in clear, engaging prose. Even if you do have lots of free time and a view of the Hudson River, you may well find it useful for organising your writing life.

Step by Step Instruction for Writing Your Own Novel Even if You do it Ten Minutes at a Time By Terry Houchin This book was written by Katharine Grubb who started the Facebook group 10 Minute Novelists. As a member of this fantastic group, I was given the opportunity to read this book for an honest review. This book is a "how to" book, but so much more. Katharine takes you through the whole process of turning your story into a novel. It is set up as a workbook. She starts you off with the very first thoughts about maybe writing a novel, takes you through the organization and planning process, explains the actual mechanics and development of the novel, and ends with how to go about publishing your finished product. This book is set up as a work book. Each section has activities for you to do, or apps that will help out, or books on writing you can read. If you are contemplating writing a book or want to improve your writing this is the book for you! It is a step by step guide through the whole writing process. It is written with humor, in an easy to understand language. I highly recommend this book to any aspiring authors out there.Katharine is a very busy lady. She has five children that she home schools. She is the leader of the Facebook group 10 Minute Novelists, that has over 1,100 members. She hosts online chats 2 or 3 times weekly for that group. She is a blogger. In addition to all of the above, she is an author. Believe me when I tell you...If she can find time in her busy schedule to write....you can too.

It is a highly helpful tool for anyone who is honestly interested in becoming an author, when they think they don't have the time. It's fast paced and informative, I read it in one sitting, thought I do have plans to go back and do some of the workshop ideas the author sprinkled throughout the book. It's just a great learning tool. I quite enjoyed it.

2015 Banff Mountain Book Competition Award--Adventure TravelA hand-crafted, artfully told true story about the balance of an adventurous life.Shivering in a cave beneath Mount Fitz Roy in Patagonia, artist and rock climber Jeremy Collins had an intense and anxious vision, both geographic and artistic, about this life and what he was doing with it. As a result, he left Argentina and commenced on a four-year journey that took him in the four cardinal directions from his home in Kansas City--north, south, east, west--to create art in the wild, climb new routes, and live out his own map. Drawn: The Art of Ascent shares his exploits, his art, and what he discovered about balancing wilderness adventure with peace at home.Jeremy chronicles ambitious first ascents in the United States, China, Venezuela, and Canada with climbing partners including James Q Martin, Mark Jenkins, Pat Goodman, Jeff Achey and Mikey Schaefer. At the same time, this contemplative dad shares his dreams and desires, and always finds a route back to his family.Jeremy's art is a rich and textured mixed media of pencil, charcoal, watercolor, torn paper, and photographs. Drawn features pages from the sketchbooks he kept on these climbs with hand-written text.

Review "This is a really surprising book. Between the covers you will find apparent contradictions; outrageous adventure and domestic comfort, tears and laughter, artwork and thoughtful commentary, and a narrative that tells a tale of many parts; part climbing adventure, part travel to intriguing places, part homage to lost friends, part bande dessinee, all drawn together like a scrap book, and yet there is a deftness of touch in the storytelling. In the end, it all adds up to a work of art. The whole is greater than the parts. Recommended, highly."--2015 Banff Mountain Book Competition Award

By phillip martin Last week I had the privilege of being invited to attend Jeremy Collins' book tour in Las Vegas. Hosted by Desert Rock Sports, the event featured a live art show with Jeremy and then a screening of his movie, DRAWN: The Art of Ascent. The movie follows the story of Jeremy traveling West, South, East, and North in search of adventure, discovery and commemorating the life of a fallen comrade. The film draws you into Jeremy’s personal life, as he balances a self described “love paradox” — where he strives to give both adventure and family his full attention. As the film shows, Jeremy is a committed father and husband, but at his core he is an adventure seeker. The dynamic between raising two small children while being a world traveler and explorer plays out in a beautiful and artistically driven story. In the book of the same title, we get a detailed look into each of his expeditions into uncharted and (often) dangerous corners of the earth. As a 20 year climbing veteran, the actual climbs often pale in comparison to the dangers found in the local wildlife and weather. With that said, the climbs themselves do not come without unexpected surprises. He does not make these journeys alone; for each expedition Jeremy brings along real world companions who's individual stories are as interesting as the adventures themselves. From the Venezuelan who runs a water buffalo farm with his family to the writer who has explored over one hundred countries and managed to get arrested in six, there are plenty of rich characters to be found.Perhaps the most interesting part of Jeremy’s journey is the art which was created on his travels and compliment the story, filling each page with color and life. Flipping through the pages of Drawn is an adventure onto itself, taking you from hand written journal entries to beautifully illustrated images to anecdotes on both family and adventure.Owning Drawn is owning a piece of living art. Drawn manages to make the transition between story and artistic expression seamless and casual. Each page is full of detail from photos to paint to illustrations that add layers and textures that can be studied and appreciated far more than just words alone.Jeremy talks about an idea he wants to instill to his young son: “Make money to live life and never the opposite.” After reading Drawn, I was left with a similar feeling— do not spend your time worried about what others think, go out and explore and live your life on your terms, not someone else's.As Jeremy’s book tour in Las Vegas wrapped up he wrote me a simple note: “Keep taking chances. I did…and it was worth it.”

By DavidH Collins' moving homage to a fallen climbing partner, collaborator, and friend is about much more than life, death, and worldwide adventure. Beyond his distinct voice and singular artwork, Collins totes you in the globe's four directions, then invites you to chase your own passion. This doesn't have to be climbing or art or any of the things he's drawn to. But it does have to be something. Through his journey, you begin your own.Read it in one sitting. Then stroll your way back through one page at a time. To call Drawn a coffee table book is an injustice, but so is putting it on the shelf. Because where it really belongs is in your hands.

This book wasn't on my radar and appeared out of nowhere.Drawn: The Art of Ascent is actually a travelogue journal of climbing expeditions by Jeremy Collins. Collected within are wonderful stories, beautiful hand drawn art and photo collages. The book focuses on four main climbs in different continents. Collins is an adventurer at heart and one who really loves climbing mountains. I can sense his enthusiasm through the pages, words and the art. He also loves his family and he calls the situation he's in as living in a love paradox. He mentions that he misses his family at night while he's outside sleeping under the open sky. I found that to be touching. When his friend died during an avalanche in China, he brought along his friend's ashes to scatter at the summits he scaled. The storytelling is fantastic. He describes his adventures in detail with beautiful imagery, either drawn or in words, the people he meets, his climbing buddies and the mountains he climbs. There's also tension in the book. You won't know until the next page whether he had made a slip or his gear came loose to send him tossing down the side of the mountain. It happened a few times and that really made for some tense reading. I finished the book in one sitting as I wasn't able to put down the book.I can only imagine how awe-inspiring it is to be standing at the foot of mountains, and how amazing it is to be able to scale one.Highly recommended(See more pictures of the book on my blog. The realities of war are brutal for any man, but for a Buddhist like Andrew Waters, they’re unthinkable. And reconciling his serene nature with the savagery of World War II isn’t the only challenge Andrew faces. First, he must overcome the deep prejudice his half-Chinese ancestry evokes from his shipmates, a feat he manages by providing them with the best meals any destroyer crew ever had. Then he falls in love with his superior officer, and the two men struggle to satisfy their growing passion within the confines of the military code of conduct. In a distracted moment, he reveals his sexuality to the crew, and his effort to serve his country seems doomed. When the ship is destroyed, Andrew and the crew are interned in Changi, a notorious Japanese POW camp. In order to save the life of the man he loves, Andrew agrees to become the commandant's whore. He uses his influence with the commandant to help his crew survive the hideous conditions, but will they understand his sacrifice or condemn him as a traitor? 3rd Edition

Patterson A Lonely War is the story of a Chinese-American youth who is raised in a multi-cultural environment, schooled in Buddhism, and then is thrust into the world at war -- the US Navy during the Pacific conflict. Andrew Waters encounters every known flavor of intolerance, but because he is well grounded, strong in his pacifist convictions and emerging from the mysteries of the closet, he manages to survive events that the average person could not withstand. The issue, however, is that Andrew hasn't figured out the reason for his own existence and fosters the best part of all who encounter him, from hateful bigots, to duplicitous clergy, to prison commandants, and to wayward young men. A reader has no better guide to World War II than through Andrew Waters' soulful heart.Alan Chin has created a realistic war novel, not the kind we imagine, but the ground level view that many veterans will easily recognize. However, whenever we feel afraid of the progression of the tale, the characters bind us to reality -- that duty and patriotism and even a hint of bravery can overcome the direst circumstances. Even death becomes a transitional state in this brilliant work. One does not generally expect tender imagery in a war novel, but Mr. Chin constantly provides us balm without becoming tedious. The only problem I had with the book is that it kept me up well after two AM each night, because I could not put it down. Just one chapter more. Just one. This happens perhaps with one in twenty or so books, and when I get one like it, I look for other works by the same author. Two points: I particularly enjoyed the characterizations in this character driven novel. Even the "bad-guys" developed into memorable homilies. When they are exposed to the proper light, everyone can find their way to the heart of humanity. I especially enjoyed the character of Hud (Hudson), and I will say no more on that, because that would spoil the experience. I also enjoyed the absence of the usual labels for men on men relationships. They happen so organically in this novel that anyone who knows about these things will say, "Yep, that's it exactly."The level of research is amazing. The various cultures revealed, especially Japanese and Chinese, are to the point, and I can attest to that having degrees in East Asian culture. Naval logistics are right on the money and the descriptions of Kyoto tell me that Mr. Chin has visited there in order to take me with him.A brilliant book. I recommend it to anyone who wants a good read and lingering joy.

Which is kind of an odd thing to say about a story that takes place, in part, in a WWII Japanese prison camp. There are so many intriguing elements, but I most appreciated the contrast of the young Buddhist pacifist serving on a ship in wartime, the challenges and discrimination inherent in being an Asian American while serving the war effort, and the remarkable depth and varieties of love and loyalty that are portrayed in the book. The language in the opening chapters could have been toned down a bit, since the wording can at times be rather florid; but that changes for the better as the action picks up. There are some minor but obvious typos (vile for vial, yoke for yolk, etc.), but they end up being trivial in the larger context of this layered and nuanced work. The main character is a chef, so people who enjoy food writing will be periodically rewarded throughout the text. The novel has both an epic and a literary feel, and a lot about this book was very unexpected and extremely satisfying. Alan Chin has a gift for balancing the characters' inner and outer worlds, thereby keeping the reader's interest. Except for the slightly awkward beginning, this novel was beautifully done.

It basically is the story of Andrew Waters, an Asian-American young man, who has just been assigned to the Pilgrim. It's WW II and the US has entered the war after the horrible events of Pearl Harbor. Andrew is a pacifist who had enlisted because he couldn't go against his father's wishes to see him in the Navy. Raised in an all-boys school by Buddhist monks, Andrew has no idea of how many of his beliefs (how much his whole life, actually) will be challenged. For once aboard the Pilgrim, he not only has to deal with the bigotry of most of his fellow mates (due to Andrew ""looking"" like the enemy), but also with his feelings towards Executive Officer Nathan Mitchell. Resigned to loving the man in secret, Andrew keeps going through good times and bad. His life as well as that of his shipmates is turned upside down when they are captured and sent to Changi prison. The book adds on a deeply-felt element of the will to survive that the men hold on as the story takes many unexpected twists. I have to admit that it wasn't until Chapter 16 (or roughly a little over 100 pages) for me to feel that the book was ""finally"" kicking in. I think part of the reason was that I had picked it up expecting a regular or 'mainstream' m/m romance. What I found was a very realistic (without being overtly cynical or brutal) discussion on what love is and can be between men regardless of where they come from or who they are. Once I understood that, the rest of the read was an actual pleasure because the author made sure that the characters reacted to things like a regular person would despite of their circumstances. There was love but not much in the conventional romance. I figured that the ending was going to be bittersweet. It certainly wasn't the HEA I would have wanted when I first started reading the book, BUT the ending for ""The Lonely War"" fit it perfectly. This book was not playing by the everyday rules. While I don't know if I would read it again--at 303 pages which included some rough passages I'd rather not experience again--I can honestly say that this is a book that deserves to be read by fans of m/m who want a more realistic angle OR maybe something that is slightly off-center. It's a brilliant novel. One I'm happy I got the chance to immerse myself in.This, I have to say, was the Jewel in the Crown of my Rainbow Award books. It was an EXCELLENT read. It kept me rapt and I can honestly say, that I never, ever, not once, knew what would happen next - but when whatever it was unfolded, I believed it. This, for me, represents very good quality writing. It is not predictable, it is realistic, emotionally engaging, engrossing and very well written. A truly worthy contender for the top spot in this category in my opinion. The world building was excellent. Life aboard the 'Pilgrim', life in the Navy during the 2WW, life in a prison camp run as prisoners of the Japanese. I 'believed' them all. Excellent. I just can't find fault with the characters either. All believable in their setting, fully rounded. Especially, Andrew and Hakaru Tottori. Alan's writing of Commandent Tottori accomplished the impossible and made me love the character - against all the odds. The same as Andrew did in the end. I felt all the characters were fully rounded, fleshed out and believable. Even the lesser characters were written with individuality. Once again, I can't find fault. The pacing was superb, there were no lulls in the action, everything was clear and consise. The writing crisp, descriptive and emotive.

The Ranger

On the island of Galveston, off the coast of Southeast Texas, lies a hotel called the Jacaranda. In its single year of operation, two dozen people have died there. The locals say it's cursed. The Rangers say that's nonsense, but they know a man who might be willing to investigate. Horatio Korman crosses the water from the mainland and hopes for the best.

The Nun

But the bodies pile up, and a hurricane is brewing up fast. One of the Jacaranda's guests sees time running out, so she seeks an authority of a different sort: a priest from El Huizache who is good at solving problems and keeping secrets. Eileen Callahan has a problem to solve and a secret to keep. She crosses her fingers and sends a message that could save them all.

The Padre

Juan Miguel Quintero Rios broke a promise to the Virgin, and so he was punished...but his intentions were pure, so he was also blessed. Now he walks the Southwest with second sight and a tattoo across his back: "Deo, non fortuna" - by God, not chance. The former gunslinger crosses himself and makes for the Jacaranda Hotel.

By Cissa This is a very, very creepy tale, of the "possessed building" trope. It is not altogether clear how cutting down the jacaranda tree- important as it was to the island- caused this evil entity to take up residence- and it's a very specific entity, with precise requirements that to me did not jibe with the history of the tree. That being said, it's a minor quibble in the face of an excellently creepy novel, that kept me page-turning long after i ought to have been asleep! The characters are very well-drawn, and feel real. The plot builds and is is very creepy indeed. Not everything gets explained. Although this is in her "Clockwork Century" setting, most of it has little overlap with the rest of the books therein, so this is fine to read even if you've read nothing else in that setting. That being said, it is closer in length to a novella than a novel, so the price for the physical version is rather high. The production values were excellent, though, and this is one of the few books I've read this year that did not have copy-editing errors- high praise!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. read it By Roberta Wright Cherie Priest is an awesome author, and this book stands up to the qualities I expect from her works. This story takes place many years after the main works in the Clockwork Century, with only minor reference to the earlier adventures. If you have read the Clockwork Century and liked it, then definitely read Jacaranda. If you have read her other works, but not the Clockwork Century, then read Jacaranda anyway--there are no spoilers if you read Jacaranda before the Clockwork Century novels. In feel it is more like her horror than her steam punk.

Butler This is set in the world of Priest's Clockwork Century but despite some cool gadgetry and Ranger Korman as a main character, this does not fit into the Clockwork Century world. It is a spooky story written in Priest's beautifully lyrical style. I recommend it, but be warned that it is not quite what one might expect.

I bought this book so that I could see what sort of advice it would give to a newbie to the tri world and found it to be clear, concise, sensible and to the point. There are a myriad of books on triathlon out there and I wish I had found something like this when I was starting out.The only thing that is missing is perhaps a sample training plan with a terminology section on all the "Tri jargon" but otherwise great advice! There are no good workout plans. You can find most of the information contained in this book online. As a beginner I want a book that gives me step by step instructions. I need to know how to train in heart rate zones, how to begin running and swimming. The best thing about this book is it is free to download. Thats it.

The dance was over. From the great house on the hill the guests had all departed and only the musicians remained. As they filed out through the ample doorway, on their way home, the first faint streak of early dawn became visible in the east. One of them, a lank, plain-featured young man of ungainly aspect but penetrating eye, called the attention of the others to it. "Look!" said he; "there is the daylight! This has been a gay night for Sutherlandtown." "Too gay," muttered another, starting aside as the slight figure of a young man coming from the house behind them rushed hastily by. "Why, who's that?"

She is credited with being the mother of the mystery novel, as Poe is credited with being the father of the mystery novel.Set in small town Massachusetts in the 1890s. A well loved and wealthy woman dies from a stab wound from a dagger. At the same time, a servant dies of a heart attack, apparently brought on by the excitement of her mistress dying from the dagger wound. Everything is not as it seems however. There are a plethora of characters who have know each other for years. it includes once wealthy brothers, one of who was the suitor of the woman who died many years ago. Many plot twists and turns. Not really to my taste, but I did finish the book and found it enjoyable. It holds up well for being over one hundred years old.

Green predated Arthur Conan Doyle, and in my opinion, her work is much better! Did I mention it's free?!

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Love's Awakening exceeded my expectations - which were very high! By Melanie Since I really loved book one in the Ballantyne Legacy series, Love's Reckoning, my expectations for Love's Awakening were very high. This book exceeded my expectations and, like book one, is now a favorite read of mine. The characters were fantastic and so real. I loved Jack, Chloe, and all of the Ballantynes. It's hard to choose a favorite character, since they were all so great, but Jack was probably my favorite. Even though I didn't know what to expect from him at first, Jack completely won me over and he was such a wonderful hero!Love's Awakening was a very moving read - there were many scenes where I got misty-eyed (whether from sadness or happiness) because of things that had happened. I was also so engrossed in the story and just loved every minute of this book. The history in Love's Awakening was great and I definitely learned more about the Underground Railroad and Pennsylvania. The story had some sad scenes, but that made it all the more realistic.Overall, Love's Awakening is a wonderful addition to the Ballantyne Legacy series and I can't wait to read the next book. I recommend this book to fans of historical romance.*I received this book for free for my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*Available September 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

Each time I read one of her novels I am swept away into a rich, deep, breathtaking story that utterly captivates me from beginning to end.Book 2 of the Ballantyne Legacy is the story of Ellie, the innocent and beautiful youngest daughter of Silas and Eden Ballantyne. Fleeing the Matrimonial Society of Philadelphia, she meets her match on the perilous road home to Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, the one man she wants is the one she can't have.Jack Turlock is the son of bitter Isabel O'Hara and wicked Henry Turlock. Pinned under the thumb of his father's threats and expectations, Jack wants nothing more to leave his past behind and become his own man- one worthy of Ellie's love. This novel is soaked in the evils of Turlock whiskey- but more importantly, it's soaked in history. Leading the charge are treacherous tales of the Underground Railroad. I dearly love books that take on the dark and deadly quest of those desperate to be free, and those passionately brave enough to light their way. Laura handles the dark themes with grace, infusing them with hope throughout.Jack & Ellie's valleys are brutal and cold. Their triumphs are as glorious and breathtaking as the view from a mountain peak. Laura's characters are refined by fire. The result is a powerful journey of redemption, undertaken by characters bound to your heart. And through it all, like the cupola of New Hope, the beacon of Christ's love blazes, calling all the hurting, searching wanderers home.

Is it one that has you counting the time down to when you can pick it back up again? Is it one you can devour in one-two settings? Is it one that carries you away to another time and place while you are lost between the pages? Is it one of those books that will leave you breathless and is awe-inspiring at the same time? What makes an author extraordinary? Is it someone as skillful with a pen as an artist is with a brush? Is it someone who can transport you to the point in time that their story takes place? Is it someone who can have you smelling the flowers, tasting the food, feeling the fabrics of clothes, and seeing majestic scenery? Is it someone who can get you to invest in and care for their characters? Is it that author that has you running to your favorite bookstore or e-store to preorder a copy of their next book as soon as you hear the release date?If you have answered yes to all of this then look no further because you have found such a book and the very author that will become one of your all time favorites. Laura Frantz's "Love's Awakening, The Ballantyne Legacy" is book two in this wonderful series and is one such book that I devoured from beginning to the end. Mrs. Frantz's skill with the written word allowed me to peek into our past, experience what life was like in the early 1800's, sense the turmoil of the times, and most importantly, get to know and care about her characters.Book two tells the story of Ellie Ballantyne, youngest daughter to Silas and Eden, and Jack Turlock, son of Isabel and Henry. Ellie comes from a well respected and religious family while Jack's family's reputation is less then sterling. How can two totally different people fall in love let alone hope to have any kind of future together? How can they overcome the animosity between their two families and keep their hope and faith alive so that they can forge that possible future? If these are questions you would like answers to then pick up your copy of "Love's Awakening" today because I can't recommend this remarkable novel highly enough. If you enjoy historical fiction, if you take pleasure in a beautifully written romance, if you like a little suspense in your stories then you will treasure "Love's Awakening". Mrs. Frantz has written a timeless love story that will be enjoyed and cherished by the young and the young at heart. This is truly an amazing book that you will treasure and reread over and over again.5.0 starsAnita (The Kindle Book Review)A free copy of this book was given in exchange for a fair and honest review. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent zombie novel. The best of the best!!! By J. Michel I didn't know there could be so much action and suspense packed into one book! As a huge fan of A.S. Thompson's work, I was eagerly awaiting the publication of The Other Side after reading the first two books in this series. I love the other books, but The Other Side is by far my favorite.I finished this book in record time because I just couldn't stop turning pages. The main characters get separated, and each group has to fight an uphill battle to save mankind from an evil sociopath who aims to take over the world. There were so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and there were heartbreaking moments too. Readers can't help falling in love with the cousins and their ragtag team of survivors. No spoilers here, but I will say that A.S. Thompson has no problem killing off his central characters. But that's part of what makes his books so exciting. No one is safe! The characters in Thompson's books are so real that readers feel like they know them. It's always tough to lose a fictional character that you've gotten to know really well. This is definitely a "zombie novel," but the zombies aren't the main focus of the book. It's about family, love, and survival. And, of course, humor. Lots and lots of humor! The author quotes movies and cracks jokes at just the right time. That's why I love reading Thompson's work - just when the characters' situations seem bleak, there's a quick one-liner or flash of humor that cracks me up.It's always bittersweet when you finish reading a series you've enjoyed. The ending to this trilogy is so well done that I wish there was more, but readers can't ask for a better finale. I hope A.S. Thompson continues to write because I'd love to read more of his work. I give five shining stars to The Other Side, and to the entire series.

Much more than your typical Zombie story. Includes suspense and government control....oh yeah...cant wait to see where we end up!!! Who can we trust??? L.L. Cool J

I figured out over the years that it's the first book I always like the best. I love it the when the outbreak begins and to see how everyone reacts and how society crumbles. It sort of plays into my 40 year old last man on earth fantasy. By the end it's less about zombies and more about the characters and storyline. This was as well written and exciting ending as there is and I love AS Thompson's work and will always read whatever he writes. However I think I'm done with this genre at least trilogies in this genre. Only book one for me from now on.
