The incredible inside story of power, money, and baseball's last twenty yearsIn the fall of 1992, America's National Pastime is in crisis and already on the path to the unthinkable: cancelling a World Series for the first time in history. The owners are at war with each other, their decades-long battle with the players has turned America against both sides, and the players' growing addiction to steroids will threaten the game's very foundation. It is a tipping point for baseball, a crucial moment in the game's history that catalyzes a struggle for power by three strong-willed men: Commissioner Bud Selig, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, and union leader Don Fehr. It's their uneasy alliance at the end of decades of struggle that pulls the game back from the brink and turns it into a money-making powerhouse that enriches them all. This is the real story of baseball, played out against a tableau of stunning athletic feats, high-stakes public battles, and backroom political deals--with a supporting cast that includes Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, Joe Torre and Derek Jeter, George Bush and George Mitchell, and many more.Drawing from hundreds of extensive, exclusive interviews throughout baseball, The Game is a stunning achievement: a rigorously reported book and the must-read, fly-on-the-wall, definitive account of how an enormous struggle for power turns disaster into baseball's Golden Age.

The Game: Inside the Secret World of Major League Baseball's Power Brokers, by Jon Pessah

Review "The Game" is a practically pitch-by-pitch account of the machinations of baseball commissioner Bud Selig, disgraced New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, and Don Fehr, the head of the major-league players' union." - Edward Kosner, The Wall Street JournalFinalist for the 2015 CASEY Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year"A compelling, high-stakes look at baseball.... Pessah does a great job of providing glimpses of conversations fans were not privy to, while placing them in context by describing what was happening on the field in that moment. Essential for fans of 1990s- and 2000s-era baseball."―Library Journal (starred review)"The action is in the boardroom, not the ballpark, in this dramatic account of the business side of baseball.... Pessah includes engaging play-by-play from key games, but his focus is on contract negotiations, revenue models, politics, deal-cutting, and the commercial calculations behind moving a team or injecting steroids. The resulting account of off-field strategizing is as engrossing as any stadium showdown."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Engaging, nitty-gritty account of the Bud Selig era, including backroom battles with George Steinbrenner, Don Fehr and steroids."―Sports Illustrated"Pessah has made his book read like a great novel.... The author also brilliantly shows the impact the game had and continues to have on American life, and how it maintains its prominent place in the cycle and fabric of our country's summers. Pessah is adept at revealing the ebb and flow of fan despair, anger, and joy."―Russell P. Gantos Jr., New York Journal of Books"In clear, accessible prose, [THE GAME] covers strikes, steroids and everything in between. Not an easy task. The most memorable sections are about Steinbrenner. Pessah deftly captures the man's heavy-handed--and often underhanded--leadership."―Michael S. Schmidt, New York TimesOne of "The Season's Best Baseball Books""A poignant account of the power struggle between three men: MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, and player's union leader Don Fehr."―Robert Birnbaum, The Daily Beast"This might be the definitive account of how front offices control Major League Baseball.... Pessah crafts freeze-frame descriptions of the most critical backroom moments of the modern era...."―Rob Fischer, Men's Journal"There are lots of fresh notes, quotes and anecdotes in The Game, but its chief value for those who care is its meticulous reconstruction of the fraught era.... The most compelling parts of The Game deal with baseball's abject failure to confront the steroid plague."―Edward Kosner, Wall Street Journal"A gritty and sensational history of America's national pastime... a juicy and engrossing story that reads like a thriller, with a star supporting cast... A must-read before 2016 labor negotiations begin. Pessah calls the game perfectly."―Marilyn Dahl, Shelf Awareness"Serious baseball fans will appreciate the author's deep research and his ability to weave multiple stories together into a graceful narrative."―Kirkus Reviews "Fascinating.... This juicy read focuses on three men who shaped [baseball's] history over [the last] two decades--Selig, union head Don Fehr, and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.... the most surprising part of the book is without a doubt the portrait of Steinbrenner. While still rendered as an insatiable tyrant, the Boss--and his willingness to put his money where his mouth is--is a breath of fresh air."―The Daily Beast"A sweeping and comprehensive investigation of the business of baseball over the past three decades.... Fascinating."―Anthony L. Fisher, Reason.com"Highest recommendation."―Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston

In The Game, Jon Pessah offers a riveting account of the modern baseball era under the reigns of Bud Selig, Donald Fehr and George Steinbrenner. Based on 5 years of research and interviews with more than 150 individuals including players, executives, former members of Congress, and even Bud Selig himself, Pessah recreates a behind-the-scenes view of the meetings, strategies, decisions, and subplots that shaped the game – and the business of baseball – as we know it.The book is gripping from the opening scene and reads more like a novel – or even a movie script – than a typical non-fiction book. It is a formidable 630 pages which reflects the incredible depth of the research, but there isn’t a dull moment. The book is actually difficult to put down once you start. The author puts the reader in the minds of the real-life characters behind the sport – it makes you feel like you are witnessing history firsthand. The Game chronicles all of the major events in the sport from 1992 through 2010. But in addition to the story we are familiar with from the sports pages at the time, this book gives us a detailed view of what actually happened behind the scenes. The book covers all of the major business aspects affecting the sport including multiple labor negotiations, TV deals, and tax-payer funded stadiums. It covers the power struggles between the owners and players, and among the owners themselves. It describes the complicated relationship between politics and baseball. And it describes in detail the use of steroids in baseball and the perspectives of each stakeholder who tried to address the issue or decided to look the other way. But what is masterful is the way that the book covers these issues by giving us a seat at the table for every major negotiation, owners’ meeting, press conference, or confidential strategy session – and giving us a view of what each party was thinking at the time.In addition to covering the off-the-field events that have shaped the sport, the book also reminds us why we are fans of baseball and gives us a box seat at the stadium to soak in some of baseball’s most memorable on-the-field moments during this period. Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig’s consecutive game record. McGuire breaking Maris’ single-season home run record. The Yankees dynasty and World Series three-peat. And hundreds of other memorable games, milestones and accomplishments. Through wonderfully vivid descriptions, the book captures the nostalgia of these moments, reminding you where you were and who you were with when you witnessed these events. And by juxtaposing the elation of these historic baseball moments with the business dealings going on in the background, the book gives us an entirely new view of the modern era of baseball – and sports in general.

Cohen I usually avoid books about sports but this book reads like a brilliant, well structured novel about the movers and shakers in baseball with names you recognize and personalities you love, or hate. They have no secrets left and no places to hide from Jon who has been behind the sports scene and in the locker rooms most of his writing career. Read it because, it is well written by a superior author with unrelenting investigative skills and a wicked sense of humor, even if it is about about baseball!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great read. By J. Crane The first sentence in The Devil in Dreamland grabbed my attention, and from that first paragraph, I found this book very hard to put down. I kept saying to myself, "I'll just read one more chapter before I turn out the light."Set in Hollywood just before Pearl Harbor the story unfolds in very intriguing ways. Schultze is an excellent writer. Like his previous novels, this book moves smoothly. He introduces new characters in a casual, disarming way. Just as you are beginning to know them there is a faint hint that they might not be who they seem to be. This foreshadowing is a particular talent of the author. A fun bonus in the story is getting to know Humphrey Bogart behind the scenes. Schultze has the fictionalilzed "Bogie" playing the good guy, then hinting that he may be a bad guy, and then ultimately... The detailed descriptions of movie sets and the process of filming make it all seem (almost) real. Schultze does have a way of making me feel that I am right there - I can see it, and feel it. Good writing, well-developed characters, plenty of suspense to keep you turning the pages. Great addition to my book shelf and to my gift list.

The main characters (the adventurous Amy and Alex), find themselves back in 1913 Washington, D.C., in the middle of our nation's awakening to the Women's Suffrage Movement (who among us doesn't dream of traveling back in time...I know I do!) Can they make a difference? (No spoilers here!) And the friendships they make along the way; the romance...sublime! It is "second nature" to immediately connect with Wendy Kolar Mullen's wonderful characters... they always seem like dear friends, and I never want her books to end...Beautifully written, a delightful tale of time-travel, history, and romance...you will love it!

You could read this on it's own, but it makes more sense and is more exciting if you have read the previous books. In this book Kat, Alexandria, Aunt Mindy, Nina, and Aradia endeavor to discover who was behind the murder of Matilda (which happened in book 4)We get to know a little more about all the characters. One's secret is revealed, not to the reader, but to one of the other characters. BUT we are let into a secret too that is totally mind boggling. This book is a real treat to read because it makes you run the gamut of emotions. I love that from a book.I am already looking forward to the next book in the series, and I hope I don't have to wait too long for it. I absolutely recommend this book, and the whole series!

I love the tension between Nina and Kat. I am looking forward to reading more about River. I adore him. To throw Bran in the mix the way Patti did was awesome. Poor Eden. This book had me involved right from the beginning. My emotions were a rollercoaster and I loved every minute of it!If you are a fan of paranormal please do yourself a favor and pick up all of Patti Roberts books, sit back and enjoy a marvelous weekend! I am very much so looking forward to the next installment of Witchwood Estate!!! Patti, I am your fan for life!!! Now I will impatiently wait for your next book!!!

I have been following this author's work for a while and she never fails to amaze me in the way she writes. This book is extremely fast paced and really fabulous read. I love how the story and the characters flow throughout the book. This author has a way of capturing her readers and keep us craving for more. I also love how this author keeps us hanging at the end and keep us guessing and pondering until she brings us a new piece of art that we crave for and beg for. This is an incredible story that I highly recommend.

Alien DNA spawned humans, also an alien species on Earth. The gods are extraterrestrials: in their image we are created. Humanoids were designed to serve as slave labour, given a short life span, and a severely stunted genetic code. We carry within encoded traits of violence, greed, rivalry, amongst others. There will always be wars, as we respond to a programmed pattern of behaviour, and cannot change. The ETgods regarded humans as a failed experiment, after trying to uplift their creation to no avail. The island of Atlantis gave rise to homo sapiens sapiens, and educated earthlings were in turn sent out to the colonies, in order to spread knowledge. Atlantis, up to its final destruction, is the epicentre of this record of events. The conflicts and forces causing its final demise are as relevant today as then. The story is narrated by the ETgod Michael. It encompasses his love for Ondina, an earthling, and their children. It is a love story like any other; the story of a family, like any other family. Michael's friendship with Ondina's brother Rogan, and other humans, is part of his journey in understanding that deep down we are all the same. Ad astra per apsera: to the stars through hardship. Intergalactic explorers, our gods, endure challenges and problems just as we do. Through great loss and tragedy, people from differing worlds, united by friendship, valour and loyalty, discover common values. From beginning to end, the themes of life are everlasting.

Well written paragraphs about human nature, for example how it permits history to repeat itself. An intense story line about one of these young 'Super beings' or 'gods' adventure journey of discovery living with humans before the event. Awesome read!

Ebook PDF The Wanderings of a Spiritualist (Illustrated), by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

This is an account of the wanderings of a spiritualist, geographical and speculative. Should the reader have no interest in psychic things—if indeed any human being can be so foolish as not to be interested in his own nature and fate,—then this is the place to put the book down. It were better also to end the matter now if you have no patience with a go-as-you-please style of narrative, which founds itself upon the conviction that thought may be as interesting as action, and which is bound by its very nature to be intensely personal. I write a record of what absorbs my mind which may be very different from that which appeals to yours. But if you are content to come with me upon these terms then let us start with my apologies in advance for the pages which may bore you, and with my hopes that some may compensate you by pleasure or by profit. I write these lines with a pad upon my knee, heaving upon the long roll of the Indian Ocean, running large and grey under a grey streaked sky, with the rain-swept hills of Ceylon, just one shade greyer, lining the Eastern skyline. So under many difficulties it will be carried on, which may explain if it does not excuse any slurring of a style, which is at its best but plain English.

The Wanderings of a Spiritualist (Illustrated), by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

About the Author The life of Arthur Conan Doyle illustrates the excitement and diversity of the Victorian age unlike that of any other single figure of the period. At different points in his life he was a surgeon on a whaling ship; a GP; an apprentice eye-surgeon; an unsuccessful parliamentary candidate (twice); a multi-talented sportsman; one of the inventors of cross-country skiing in Switzerland; a formidable public speaker; a campaigner against miscarriages of justice; a military strategist; a writer in a range of forms; and the head of an extraordinary family. In his autobiography, he wrote: 'I have had a life which, for variety and romance, could, I think, hardly be exceeded.' He was not wrong. But Conan Doyle was also a Victorian with a twist, a man of tensions and contradictions. He was fascinated by travel, exploration, and invention, indeed all things modern and technological; yet at the same time he was also very traditional, voicing support for values such as chivalry, duty, constancy, and honor. By the time of his death in July 1930 he was a celebrity, achieving worldwide fame and notoriety for his creation of the rationalist, scientific super-detective Sherlock Holmes; yet at the same time his later decades were taken up with his advocacy of the new religion of Spiritualism, in which he was a devoted believer.

Excerpt from Colonel Ninian BeallIn the summer of 1909 the finding of a large boulder in a cut on the line of the Metropolitan Southern railway near the junction of the right of way with the Glen Echo railway was communicated to Dr. Marcus Benjamin and by him promptly referred to Mr. William Van Zandt Cox, then Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars in the District of Columbia.Appreciating the fact that this boulder might be used to preserve the memory of Colonel Joseph Belt whose career had been so fully presented to the Society in a valuable paper by our Historian, Mr. Cox at once appointed a Committee on Memorials, as follows: Mr. Thomas Hyde, chairman, Mr. Caleb C. Magruder, Jr., Judge Job Barnard, Dr. Marcus Benjamin, and Mr. William S. Knox. The Committee was quickly convened by its chairman and their first efforts were directed toward securing formal possession of this valuable find. The rock was inspected by members of the Committee who found to their great satisfaction that since it had blocked the progress of the contractor he had so blasted it as to make two boulders of nearly equal size. Through the courtesy of Mr. George E. Hamilton, local attorney for the Metropolitan Southern railway, permission was given to the Committee to remove the boulders. They were accordingly placed in the vicinity of Chevy Chase Circle where they remained until authority was given to the Committee for final action.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He showed it to someone and did not get it back. So I got him a replacement with his promise not to show it to anyone else. I believe this is one of the more accurate items written about Col. Ninian Beall. Well researched and an excellent, quick read. It is definitely a "keeper"--something I read and decide I need to have a copy on my own book case!

From Library Journal James's brief 1858 classic is here presented as a no-frills edition in Dover's Thrift series. Since the text is a staple in many high school and college literature curricula, Dover provides a painless, inexpensive way of stocking multiple copies.Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “The critical faculty hesitates before the magnitude of Mr. Henry James’s work.”—Joseph Conrad

Review "Everything about this edition commends it to instructors, students, and general readers alike. Kristin Boudreau's authoritative introduction provides an excellent orientation, no less for seasoned scholars than for students discovering Henry James. The text of the novella is well chosen--the 1879 Harper edition, capturing the freshness of James's early style (as opposed to the ornate 1909 revision), but with the benefit of James's revisions of the first magazine and book versions. Twelve appendices offer contemporary materials that cast strong and helpful lights on key aspects of James's art and of the literary and cultural contexts of this early masterpiece."--Daniel Mark Fogel

By Mary Whipple One of Henry James's earliest novellas, Daisy Miller (1878) follows the activities of a wealthy, and brashly confident, young American woman as she audaciously challenges European society in Vevey, Switzerland, and in Rome, having fun, doing what pleases her, and leaving staid European society gasping in her wake. Daisy Miller, whose father is in the US and whose mother is her ineffectual "chaperone," is a free spirit in a society bound by unstated but rigid "rules," determined to do whatever she wants, whenever she wants, with whomever she chooses.Frederick Winterbourne, an expatriate who has spent most of his life in Geneva, is attracted to Daisy, but his bonds with his stuffy aunt, Mrs. Cosgrove, and her friend, Mrs. Walker, both of whom govern ex-patriot society in Europe, leave him ill-equipped to deal with Daisy's flouting of society's conventions. When she is obviously attracted to Mr. Giovanelli, a singer/musician of no social standing, and when she is seen with him publicly in places that a "nice" girl would not grace at night, her reputation is threatened, and anyone associated with her is tainted. Winterbourne is uncertain how to protect her, while, not incidentally, protecting his own reputation.Developing his most famous theme, James considers the conflicts between American and European values and the naivete of the Americans and their spontaneity as it contrasts with the old world formality of the Europeans. Daisy, who is often foolishly naïve, is also seen as brash and ego-centric, a young woman whose destiny cannot be avoided (or even predicted) because of the strength of her own, often wrong, willfulness.James focuses on two characters here--both Daisy and Winterbourne--and though the story is told from Winterbourne's point of view, Daisy is often the more vibrant of the two characters. Though she is shallow and assertive, he is hidebound by convention, leaving both characters with limits in terms of reader identification. When a night-time dalliance leads to serious consequences for Daisy, the reader is neither surprised nor shocked.Filled with trenchant observations about Americans and their differences from Europeans, the novel incorporates significant symbols--the Coliseum (associated with innocent Christian martyrs), malaria (to which Americans are particularly susceptible), Randolph (Daisy's rude and undisciplined 10-year-old brother, the ugliest of Americans), and Mrs. Cosgrove and Mrs. Walker (converts to the European way of life). Carefully observed and critical of American naivete, Daisy Miller is the "preface" to Portrait of a Lady and many of James's more fully developed novels. n Mary Whipple

28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. A quick, interesting read By Savannah Daisy Miller is everything a woman of that era should not be: flighty, flirtatious and strong-willed. I enjoyed this novella because you so infrequently see a lead female character of that era portrayed in quite such an unflattering light. While the plot is simple there are a few twists and turns. This is an interesting, fun read.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Novella about manners and customs By Eugenia This short novella is a brief story about a young american woman who travels Europe with her mother and young brother. Thru a chance she meets young British gentleman Winterbourne who is smitten by her beauty, but also amazed by her innocence and lack of restraint. Daisy comes from a rich family and from a world where she is permitted to be herself no matter what the price of her individuality may be. But she is also eager to make company in a new world and gain access to society. She craves entertainment, attention and stimulating company. What she is not realizing is the fact she is going about it the wrong way. Story is set in Europe, small town Vivey in Switzerland and Rome, Italy. As Daisy's young life unfold and ends tragically, one cannot but think that in either case there was no happy ending here. Her behaviour and galant carelessness were ticket to doom. Definitely fine story about class difference, cultural difference and tale that money cannot buy everything. One has to find subtle ways to get what she wants out of life.

Each year that followed led to a richer and richer life experience learning Pilates and the Guitar, becoming a Biodanza Teacher and Improv Comedy teacher. Since 2009, James has been looking after his parents in England and travelling in Asia, teaching and enjoying the culture and whenever he can, and writing in Bali. Pieter Van de Graeff had no idea that his life as an affluent bachelor and art dealer would change overnight with the discovery of a memoir by Bartholomaeus Spranger (1546-1611), a gifted Flemish-born artist known for centuries for his erotic paintings. Pieter's chance encounter with Karolina Sv?tlá, a history student in Prague, gradually blends their lives with Spranger's as she translates the manuscript. While meeting in New York for the first major exhibition of his art, Splendor and Eroticism in Imperial Prague (Metropolitan Museum of Art, November 2014-January 2015), two people from dissimilar walks of life strive to understand each other. Spranger's vibrant vignettes from the imperial court of Rudolf II Habsburg, a melancholy ruler isolated in a dazzling world of art, color Pieter and Karo's relationship four hundred years later. The plot explores human passions in which lust, man's oldest obsession, often reigns over affairs of heart and reason.MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW "Erudite, deftly crafted, and an inherently fascinating read from first page to last, "My Life with Berti Spranger" is one of those novels that will linger in the mind and memory long after it is finished and set back upon the shelf. Certain to be an enduringly popular addition to personal, community and academic library Literary Fiction collections, "My Life with Berti Spranger" is enthusiastically recommended reading."Margaret Lane ReviewerFOREWORD BOOK REVIEW "An intriguing plot and engaging story highlight this tale of love and art... My Life with Berti Spranger, a novel by art historian and artist Eva Jana Siroka, stars an art collector who discovers a memoir by sixteenth-century erotic painter Bartholomaeus Spranger. This brings him into contact with a student of history, and Spranger's titillating art and writing help to prompt the modern pair to romance. Pieter Van de Graeff is a wealthy art dealer and confirmed bachelor in early middle age. When he comes across a manuscript he believes was written by Spranger, he is thrilled, not least by the profit this may bring. When he meets, equally by chance, the young Karolina Svetlá... she turns out also to be a history student and competent translator of the document. As Pieter carries on his materialistic, jet-setting lifestyle, he is increasingly drawn to Karo, a strangely mercurial character. The sexual nature of Spranger's writings influences the relationship that develops between Pieter and the younger woman. The perspective offered on historical Prague... is perhaps the most appealing part of the novel... many minor characters in Spranger's story are true to history as well, and Siroka's background as an art historian lends credibility to that aspect of her work. Siroka's own illustrations accompany the text and are another highlight...  The art historian's fictionalization of the life of a fascinating figure is remarkable and worthwhile... [and] will please those interested in historical figures."Julia Jenkins Reviewer

My Life with BERTI SPRANGER, by Eva Jana Siroka

Review MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW "Erudite, deftly crafted, and an inherently fascinating read from first page to last, "My Life with Berti Spranger" is one of those novels that will linger in the mind and memory long after it is finished and set back upon the shelf."FOREWORD BOOK REVIEW "An intriguing plot and engaging story highlight this tale of love and art... stars an art collector who discovers a memoir by sixteenth-century erotic painter Bartholomaeus Spranger. Siroka's own illustrations accompany the text and are another highlight."

About the Author Eva Jana Siroka, an art historian and artist born in Bratislava, Slovakia, received her doctorate at Princeton University. A Renaissance scholar with interest in princely patronage, especially Rudolfine Prague, she has been drawn to Spranger's art for decades. In 2005, she published her novel Maddalena with the artist as a central character. Since 1971 (B.F.A, Hunter College, CUNY), her training in art history and fine arts has merged together with her academic and creative writing, and her art. A professional artist with works in North America and Europe, the author is currently preparing exhibitions in Princeton and Toronto. Inspired by Spranger's original drawings and period prints, she has illustrated the current book and designed its cover.

A fast-paced tale built on solid scholarship By mibo My Life with Bertie Spranger straddles the centuries, jumping back and forth between events in sixteenth-century imperial Prague, and the modern story of a wealthy art dealer with lessons to learn from the libertine painter whose memoir traces an arc of increasing regret.Spranger's and Rudolf's escapades burn deeply into the historic fabric of the novel. Siroka's writing is evocative and enjoyable, and it's easy to forget that it's based on scholarship. Berti is inspired by Siroka's extensive research for her doctoral thesis in the museums, libraries, photographic cabinets, and archives around the world, and her contacts with leading experts in the field.Set against the backdrop of a dissolute court and an eccentric emperor increasingly less connected to his duties, Spranger, a chastened womanizer, falls in love with 14-year-old Christine, an intelligent young woman interested in collecting precious stones and minerals. Along the way, the artist hobnobs with the giants of the time. Spranger's "memoir," discovered by Van de Graeff in Vienna and drenched with the old man's fear of dying without confession and absolution, has resonant implications for the extremely wealthy bachelor coming to terms with his own complicated love life, particularly as the head of an important European art auction house.Never told before, My Life with Berti Spranger is a rich tale of love, lust, and the ceaseless quest to find meaning in life. Eva Siroka has given us the gift of an art history course wrapped in a down-to-earth compelling story. One wonders, with some excitement, what she has in store for Book Three.

A copy of this book fell into my hands while I was between reading a number of recently published World War II era novels. I was looking for a break, something outside of the mainstream of my reading, and this proved to be an excellent choice. The story within a story format has always been a favorite of mine, and the intriguing fall from present day Europe back into the 1500s by use of a plausible devise in the story line was quite satisfying. Clearly the author knows her way around the cities and museums she describes so deftly and this gave me the feeling of being taken on a private tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Portions of the book have a scholarly almost academic feel, but it is totally accessible to the average reader and I found it very enjoyable.

By Glenn H MacEwen After finishing "My Life with Berti Spranger" I'd love to visit Vienna, the city where Pieter Van de Graeff found a memoir written by a famous, or should I say infamous (?), Flemish-born painter Berti Spranger. After his chance discovery, the immensely rich bachelor art dealer flies in his private plane from one European city to another the way most people drive to shop in the suburbs, trying to figure out what to do with the precious manuscript. The artist's name is Bartholomaeus, but by the time I finished the book I started to feel for Berti, who lived at a time when people were terrified to die and be punished in hell. And Spranger's sins are heavier than his weight in gold! The man who spent his life serving famous people, is mostly known today for the erotic paintings he painted for a Habsburg Emperor who loved women and collecting art, and only then thought about ruling an empire torn by war and religious strife.I prefer non-fiction. But before long, I was caught up in two separate story lines illustrated by the author, the second one involving Karolina, a young history student hired by Pieter to translate the manuscript. Their tale is set in several European cities as well as in New York and Princeton, where Pieter and Karo meet to visit the first art exhibition on the artist in the United States. Separated by more than four centuries and featuring plots with a distinct narrative voice, the parallel stories mirror each other as they follow the highly amorous escapades of the Flemish lothario and become involved in the process. With great attention to detail, and references to real events on the contemporary art market scene (not typical in a historical novel), the plot moves with an amazing speed and grips the reader until the last word. Pieter and Karo, two people from completely different stations in life are so real that when I finished the story, I instantly hoped that the author would write a sequel to their tale.

Does fiction sometimes foretell reality? It certainly seems that way in Lew Weinstein’s fictionalized story of an anthrax scare … a thriller that seems to track closely with real-life events, even as they unfold today. In the novel, the DIA commences its review of the failed FBI anthrax investigation … “Those FBI bastards hounded a Defense Department employee until he committed suicide, if it was suicide. After seven years the FBI hasn’t come close to making a case that could convict the lowest grade criminal, let alone an internationally respected scientist. And they think they can say ‘case closed’ and sweep their incompetent investigation under the rug?” “I’ve already spoken to Secretary Morgan,” General Drysdale continued. “The Secretary agrees that the Defense Department is taking an unwarranted hit from the FBI, and we don’t know why. At my request, the Secretary has authorized us to find out what really happened. You’re the team I’ve selected. You’re authorized to go where you need to go, ask what you need to know. You’ll have all the resources you need. Jonathan Grimes will head the task force, reporting to me at least daily. The FBI took seven years; I’m expecting some serious answers in a lot less time than that.”

The novel is written as a fast-paced thriller and I was always eager to receive the next installment. I was also grateful that the end of a section forced me to put the book down and go to sleep - otherwise I'd have been up all night. The writing is sparce, driven by a plausible plot that allows the reader to think through the crime/mystery along with the protagonist. Despite the troubling reality of the subject matter, it is a thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating read. The writer acknowledges that the novel is fiction, but provides sufficient factual context to sustain his theory on how this dramatic historical footnote could have played out as it did. The only easy answers to the questions raised in Case Closed are that the investigation was pursued without regard to basic investigative protocol and that this had to have been intentional. Even if you do not believe that the Bush Administration repeatedly allowed politics and manipulation of public sentiment to trump fact and law, you will have to acknowlege that the sheer scale of the protocol violations in the Anthrax investigation suggest political motives.Responsible Americans who believe in holding our government accountable for its actions should read Case Closed to be more informed of the facts of the case, regardless of whether they come to agree with the author's theory. More investigation is needed.I strongly recommend the book.

A Couragous Novel- A must read for political junkies By Amazon Customer This is not just a good book, but an important one.In the forward, author Lew Weinstien admits that he bacame obsessed with the FBI's stunningly abrupt conclusion to the nearly 7 year old Anthrax investigation in 2008 wherein the alleged perpetrator Bruce Ivins was posthumously tried in the court of public opinion by the FBI and found guilty. Weinstein knew there were demons embedded in this story, and they haunted him. For weeks he could not rest until he'd put pen to paper in a cathartic purge. This novel is the result. In the spirit of full disclosure, I'll admit, that I had much the same reaction to the FBI announcement that spring. So moved was I that I did my own research and concluded beyond any reasonable doubt that Bruce Ivins was murdered by powerful forces that had strong political motives. Author Weinstein does a terriffic job telling this fictionalized account of an inter agency post-mortem investigation of the (real) failed FBI investigation. Yes, make no mistake this is fiction, and the names have been changed to prevent law suits, but the conclusion the author reaches is exactly the one I reached last year after exhaustive research. Ivins, it turns out, is just the tip of a very menacing real-world iceberg.Any American who came to mistrust the ambitions of the previous administration, and feared that our constitution was being undermined by overzelous ideological politicians who had a cosy relationship with "the dark side" will find this book intellectually stimulating, and perhaps even vindicating, as I did. I reccomend you buy it, read it, and pass it on to someone who will benefit from a deeper understanding of the dangers posed by authoritarian politicians, who are, even as I write this, champing at the bit for their chance to regain power. It's that important.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Truth Be Known By Carolyn M. Shirk Case Closed provides a solid background of the 2001 anthrax case which could not have been attained through the news media. It was concise and informative and offered credibility to the events which in my opinion could have very likely occurred. A well-known scientist accused of this hideous crime seven years after his death when the case is still unsolved and no other person brought forward, is a crime in itself.

When a horrific battle rips through Gettysburg, the farm of Union widow Liberty Holloway is disfigured into a Confederate field hospital, bringing her face to face with unspeakable suffering - and a Rebel scout who awakens her long-dormant heart.

While Liberty's future crumbles as her home is destroyed, the past comes rushing back to Bella, a former slave and Liberty's hired help, when she finds herself surrounded by Southern soldiers, one of whom knows the secret that would place Liberty in danger if revealed.

In the wake of shattered homes and bodies, Liberty and Bella struggle to pick up the pieces the battle has left behind. Will Liberty be defined by the tragedy in her life, or will she find a way to triumph over it? Widow of Gettysburg is inspired by first-person accounts from women who lived in Gettysburg during the battle and its aftermath.

(Page 365)Widow of Gettysburg is an incredible follow-up to Wedded to War in the Heroines Behind the Lines series. This book sets up the reader in the Gettysburg area right before the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. We get an up close and personal look at real people -- not the soldiers who bravely fought on each side, but the people living in Gettysburg just before and during the battle. We look into the faces of injured soldiers during the battle, not a glancing look that causes the reader to relive the arguments about who was right and wrong, but a solid look at the sons, brothers and husbands that went to war. We see past their convictions and political leanings and into their humanness, their doubts, their longings. And then, instead of moving on with the pace of the war, we stay in Gettysburg and see what life was like after the battle. While each side fought on for another two years, what happened with those injured at Gettysburg? And how did Gettysburg pick up the pieces? What I Liked"Right now, who she was did not matter. Her actions did. This time, she would make them count." (Page 104)Though part of me wanted to rush through this story, another part wanted to take its time, to savor what was being laid out before my eyes. Gems like the passage above got my brain thinking outside the story and into my own life -- past those times where I knew I had failed, or at least chosen poorly. In this instance, I wanted to be like Liberty and make the choice that today, my actions would matter to someone. I love when a fiction book challenges you to be more than you are, more than you thought you could be!I found the pace very good. Mrs. Green did well in sticking to the timeline within the historical context, and added in all the busyness and uncertainty of the time period without overwhelming the reader. The characters were well developed, some showing great spiritual or emotional growth and others far less. The emotions the people dealt with were real as the characters struggled with the issues of the day. Even from my comfortable home 150 years later, I wondered at my own reactions to some of the events that confronted Liberty, Bella, Silas and Amelia.Although I am no expert on either the time period, I didn't read anything that caused me to pause. The research seemed reasonable and the tidbits of history flowed well within the story without sounding forced or lecturing. I really appreciated the notes at the end of the story explaining which people or scenes were fiction and which were historical fact. The Bottom Line - 5 starsI loved this book! It had a good storyline, compounding problems, raw emotions and, best I could tell with my limited knowledge, stuck faithfully to the true history, people and culture of the time period. The story pulled at my heart and challenged me to apply God's principles freshly to my daily life. I loved picking it up and had trouble putting it down.If you enjoy historical romances or or want to know more about the American Civil War, then I highly recommend giving this book a try. Although it is book 2 of the series, you can read this one as a stand alone novel without a problem.

A Magnificent Tale of Strength in the Midst of War By TS Mathews In this heartrending story of the Battle of Gettysburg Jocelyn Green gives us a look into the lives of several of the many women that struggled to survive the horrors of war.Liberty Holloway, our nineteen year old heroine has been a widow for almost two years since her young husband Levi died in the Battle of Bull Run. Since a young age Liberty was taught by her cruel aunt she wasn't worth anything and that she would never make anything of her life. That's why her mother gave her away. So now Liberty lives all alone on her farm still in her Widow's Weeds. Will she forever be known as the Widow of Gettysburg representing all the women who've lost so much? Will she ever feel she has made something of her life? The day a stranger rode up to the farm and asked for something to eat was the day things began to change for Liberty. She has no clue he is Silas Ford, the handsome young man that tried to befriend her when her aunt would belittle her as a child. Once upon a time Silas had been a student at the Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg until an outrageous chain of events forever changed his life. When Silas mentions to Liberty that she should start living again, at first she is upset but after he leaves she thinks about it and decides he is right so she puts away her mourning clothes. Will Liberty ever see this handsome stranger again?Bella Jamison, a freed slave that works for some of the ladies of Gettysburg, remembers the feel of a whip slicing her back apart. She remembers every atrocity done to her at the hand of an evil master and because of an unspeakable act Bella has to keep a secret that could destroy the live of someone she holds dear if it ever comes to light. On July 1st 1863 the first sounds of battle were heard and Liberty had no clue that in a very few hours her house would be used as a field hospital for hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers. When the doctor asks Liberty to help hold a light for him to perform amputations she tells him she cannot do it. Will Liberty find a strength that can only come from God to help these men whose cause took the life of her husband? Will she follow God's leading and realize she can make her life count by helping those who cannot help themselves? My simple words cannot begin to describe the depth of this novel. From the very beginning I found myself drawn in the story, it was as if I could close my eyes and hear the sounds of battle--the cannons firing, the sounds of the wounded in agony. Then I think of all that was lost during that time--the young men who only a few years before were babies on their momma's laps, the men who died that day because of their love for this country who left behind wives and children. Ms. Green did a superb job bringing to light the strength of the women that were left to clean up the carnage this war left behind. Ms. Green has actual statements from women that survived this horrific time, it was so enthralling to read in their own words how they felt about what was happening. This book is not for the faint of heart because there are scenes that will disturb you. Even though I found myself in tears at one point from the descriptions I feel my life is so much more enriched after reading this and I know you will feel the same. Thank you Ms. Green, for creating this masterpiece.

Widow of Gettysburg hits the target By Cass Wessel Jocelyn Green, the author of the book, "Widow of Gettysburg," drapes the dark garlands of war, and its aftermath, over a patchwork quilt of courage, faith, and hope. Never once, does any segment of her tale overwhelm, but all elements contribute to the forward movement of the plot line. Intrigue and mystery thread throughout. Plot twists grab and capture. The reader never gets lost in point of view shuffles, nor does the "Widow of Gettysburg" bog down like an overloaded supply wagon on a soggy Gettysburg road. Quite the contrary, the storyline cannonballs forward to the end. The characters in "Widow of Gettysburg" sparkle, especially Liberty Holloway, Bella Jamison, Silas Ford, and Harrison Caldwell. Even secondary characters such as Amelia Sanger, Myrtle Henderson, and the two doctors, O'Leary and Stephens, display humanity's foibles; but the villains ooze sleaze like excrement from latrine trenches. The hero and heroine endear themselves, engage the reader in their struggles, but when villainy arises, we fret, rapidly turning the page to see if they will avoid disaster, but this is the Battle of Gettysburg. After all, what can a Confederate scout really expect from a Union soldier's widow? Is there any hope of a happy ending as minie balls whiz through the air and cannons shell strong buildings? Based in history and upon the writing of eyewitnesses, this book overflows with authenticity, drips veracity, and promotes acceptance instead of prejudice. Knowing the history of the Battle of Gettysburg does not spoil this gripping tale, but rather, adds to it. The "Widow of Gettysburg" absolutely thrilled this reviewer. Jocelyn Green has given the world another great read in the "Widow of Gettysburg," just as she did with "Wedded to War." This reader recommends them highly. I received a complimentary copy of Widow of Gettysburg from the author, Jocelyn Green, but am under no obligation to provide a positive review.
