When Abraham Petrovich leaves his native Russia to join the 1741 Bering Expedition of Discovery to explore what is now Alaska, he can only think of finding his fortune in a strange new land.

That vision comes to an abrupt halt, however, when he and a shipmate are captured by Tlingit natives near present-day Sitka after a horrifying bear attack.

Abraham's ability to adapt to an alien culture is tested, and with the help of the village chief and guidance from his wife, he fits into what he discovers is a complicated society.

The shaman wants to kill the whitefaces, but the chief wants to learn from the strangers. When the shaman conspires to get his way, Abraham and his surviving family flee Sitka fearing for their lives.

Finding refuge in Klawak, Abraham immerses himself in Tlingit life-not knowing that he'll soon make an eerie discovery on a deserted beach that will solidify his place among the Tlingits.

Abraham continues his incredible journey, seeking whitefaces like himself, but he ultimately finds something much more valuable as he explores the land and meets new people in Totem.

Fascinating and very readable By JoAnn Pippin This book is a wonderful story for readers who are interested in how early explorers of the North American continent interact with natives. It proves it is really plausible that some who came here learned and appreciated the lifestyle and culture of those who already lived here. Reading about the reactions of a “civilized” man who, in both life-threatening and humorous situations is thrown into a culture that is completely different from the court of the czars is interesting and compelling. Worked into the story is an amazing amount of detail about how the Tlingit and Haida people existed—how they fished, made their canoes and totem poles, celebrated with potlucks, and managed the rough waters and tough environmental conditions in their world It is enhanced even more with beautiful descriptive passages from an author who has intimate knowledge of Alaska geography and scenery.

Purtzer I've fished a big part of the Alaskan Panhandle from Cape Chacon,Cape Muzon,Craig,Klawak,Noyes Island,Coronation Island,Sitka,Pelican,Elfin Cove,Icy Straight & Cape Spencer. During this time I've observed many native artifacts about the Tlingit & Haidas. The book "Totem" explains many facts about the tribes and their history. The Ebb & Flood of the tides reveals unknown truths about explorers from Russia living among and marrying the local natives. How they were taught to make metal from "Black Sand" producing metal knives, weapons & tools to benefit the natives. How their Moons display the time to fish for salmon, pick berries, hunt young animals etc. All this and more information is found in the book Totem

The cruise ships should have it on board.Totem is the fast pace of survival of a man, with exceptional talents and vision, in an exceptional setting on the rough and treacherous waters off the Alaska coast. On land he learns the ways of native Indian life and lore, learns to love this beautifully breathtaking land and the meaning of contentment. All the characters are compelling in their roles that involve lust, murder, trust, friendship and love.I predict a great movie here!

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. A really great reference tool By STEVE JOHNSON With all the hype around iOS 9, I was really surprised that I couldn't find too many new features. I was interested in learning about the hidden enhancements that were not on the official list on Apple's website. I bought this book, hoping to find just those answers. And I did.Firstly, I really liked the What's New chapter, which detailed every feature that Apple added in iOS 9, and then directed me to the section in the book that talked about this feature in-depth. This took out all of the guess work for me, because that was exactly what I wanted to know. In fact, all of the material was indexed very well, and I couldn't believe how easy it was to navigate.Secondly, I thought that the information was very accessible. We are not all software engineers, after all, and often these books try to speak in a language that does not sound quite human. Additionally, the screenshots were really helpful on the rare occasions when the instructions alone left any doubt in my mind. What I also really appreciated was the distinction that the author made between the information intended for an iPhone and that which was intended for the iPad. I am an owner of both, and if that distinction wasn't made for some of these features, I might have been trying to do things on my iPhone that it could not do until I was blue in the face.Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to find out about the new features in iOS 9, and is looking for a guide that does not assume any knowledge, has no fluff, and acts as a really great reference tool.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ... guide more directly focused on the IPAD--this books is excellent in terms of content By Frank Schutz I should have purchased a guide more directly focused on the IPAD--this books is excellent in terms of content, but I need one that is more specific to the IPAD.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not so helpful By Judith I am not sure who this book would really help. For somebody who is new to IOS devices there is not enough information to be really helpful. For somebody who is experienced with previous versions of IOS, and just wants to learn about the changes in IOS9 the information is too basic. I was able to figure out the small changes in IOS 9 on my own. What is needed is more in-depth information. I need to know the pros and cons of different options, not just where the buttons are to change those options. Another problem is that the book covers iPhones and iPads, which is a problem because there is just too much information that doesn't apply to you if you are reading the book with only interest in one of the devices. I have read his IOS 8 book, and he has clearly just updated that book, which would be fine, except that he missed changing IOS 8 to IOS 9 a couple of times. I only read this book because it was free through Kindleunlimited. If you can't get it free, don't bother.

The Chosen Queen (Queens of Conquest Book 1), by Joanna Courtney

Review Gripping, intriguing, romantic Tracy Bloom A glorious, rich, epic story of love, friendship and sacrifice which will sweep you up and transport you to another time. I absolutely loved this and can't wait for the next book in the series. Rachael Lucas, author of Sealed With A Kiss and Coming Up Roses The story reaches a heart-rending climax. A must read. I loved it Freda Lightfoot, author of The Amber Keeper With lovely writing and a terrific sense of narrative drive, Joanna Courtney portrays an era of change through a story about a long forgotten Queen. In The Chosen Queen, Edyth is a heroine who inhabits a convincingly re-created historical world, peopled with personalities whose lives leap from the page. Superb! Carol McGrath, author of The Daughters of Hastings trilogy 'A beautifully written multi layered tale with a tremendously authentic sense of place and time ... an epic feel ... highly recommended' LizLovesBooks 'An absorbing and emotional debut novel' Candis magazine A fascinating and gripping read, I was hooked from the very first page and didn't want to put it down. Joanna Courtney is a new talent in the world of historical fiction and one that I would highly recommend. I look forward to reading more by this fantastic author Bookbabblers

About the Author Joanna Courtney has wanted to be a writer ever since she could read. As a child she was rarely to be seen without her head in a book and she was also quick to pick up a pen. After spending endless hours entertaining her siblings with made up stories, it was no surprise when Joanna pursued her passion for books during her time at Cambridge University - where she combined her love of English and History by specialising in Medieval Literature. Joanna continued to write through her first years of work and then, married and living in Derbyshire, in the sparse hours available between raising four children. She has written over 200 stories and serials published in women's magazines, some of which have been broadcast on BBC radio. Joanna has also won several fiction prizes and written and directed an award-winning play. She teaches creative writing across the country and for the Open University. Joanna is fascinated by defining moments in history, of which the Battle of Hastings is certainly one. The outcome of that momentous day is one of the big 'what-ifs?' of England's past and she has loved being able to immerse herself in the world of the Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Vikings whilst writing The Queen's of the Conquest trilogy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. an enthralling tale of war and love in Anglo-Saxon England as told through the eyes of a little known about woman By Sarah L. Gruwell I remember reading about Edyth as a kid in Morgan Llewelyn’s Wing From Hastings. I was really young and so only remember vague impressions, like remembering that Harold was a big bully and her brothers were toads. It was a real treat to re-visit this era and these people specifically to get another look at them. For a debut novel, this author has done a fantastic job. She took a lot of time in her world building and research of details. The reader gets a real sense for the sights, sounds, and smells of late Anglo-Saxon England and wild Wales. The intense political situation the characters found themselves in was thoroughly explored and made for suspenseful reading. I also was very fascinated by all the details on hand fasting vs traditional Roman religious weddings and the differences thereof. All the characters and their various relationships made for enthralling reading. To see Edyth, Harold, and all the others come alive again was a real treat. The author gives them real depth of emotion, personality, and understanding. I especially liked Edyth and her understanding of the various political situations and her place in them. Being married to two men who are enemies and the particular situation with Harold/Svana showed her maturity and clear thinking. I also liked how real she felt in her sensual nature and curiosity, like any other girl/woman her age.Altogether, I feel that this is a robust start of Joanna Courtney’s new trilogy and total career. She tells a great story, gets the historical details right, and makes her characters and their relationships breathe with depth and realism. I definitely look forward to more works by her; I feel she’s going to be among the greats for me.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating period of history By Karen McMillan This is well-written historical fiction that takes place in Wales and England from 1055 to 1066. It is a period of history I knew little about before reading this book. The story centres around the spirited Edyth, who is the granddaughter of Lady Godiva. She is only fourteen years old when her family is exiled to Wales – and there she captures the eye of the larger than life King of Wales. He eventually makes her his wife and Queen, but their marriage comes at great cost. She finds herself on the opposing side of a bitter feud with the Earl Harold Godwinson and his handfasted wife, Lady Svana, a woman with whom she is friendly, with terrible consequences for them all.The author does an admirable job creating a believable and attractive character from the facts of history about Edyth. The Chosen Queen is the first in a new historical fiction series that brings to life the Saxon, Viking and Norman queens. The author has obviously done a lot of research, and it is a fascinating read into another time. I’ll look forward to the next installment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great story with a fierce heroine By Suze Lavender It's 1055 and fourteen year old Edyth is already quite mature for her age. She's curious about love and Harold and Svana are her great examples. She's impressed by their relationship and their faith that love will survive everything. They aren't officially married, but they have something much more special. Edyth wants to have a similar experience, she'd like to get married for love and not because of connections. There's a lot of political unrest in England and Edyth's father is exiled. He travels to Wales together with his family. There Edyth meets Griffin, the king of Wales. Even though he's much older Edyth feels they have a connection. The king asks her to marry him which will make Edyth the queen of Wales. Griffin lives with the expectation that every day could be his last, because of that he enjoys whatever he can as much as possible. His dream is to unite Wales, but that's a difficult task. After much political unrest Edyth has to go back to England. The only good thing about that is that she can be with her best friend Svana once more. She finds herself in the middle of a difficult matter. King Edward is old and there is no heir, who will become the next king? There's a tough decision Edyth has to make. One that has consequences for the future of the kingdom. The Chosen Queen overwhelmed me when I first started reading it. There were a lot of characters and the fourteen year old Edyth was much more advanced than a girl her age often is. That is part of her character though. She fights for what she believes in and love is the most important thing there is for this strong, fierce and determined woman. I greatly admired Edyth and enjoyed reading her story very much. When Edyth grows older the story becomes more mature as well. Edyth's life isn't easy. Even though this isn't an actual retelling of her history I thought it was great to read a story about this woman. She's certainly interesting and the author has done a wonderful job creating such a gripping and thrilling story. The battles had me on the edge of my seat every time. I loved the story and the development of Edyth's character. The beginning of the book might be a bit chaotic, but the rest of the story is absolutely fantastic and I didn't want it to end.

The cover is smooth and the pages rustic! There are also really cute and quarky design touches on the inside and out. Plenty of room to write phone numbers and long emails. I also love that the spacing is big enough I can read my writing! It was so fun filling this book out and I fee much more organized with family/friends contacts.

In every part of the world, already thousands of years ago, humans have speculated about some kind of life force. In China it is called qi (also spelled chi), in India prana, in ancient Greece pneuma, in Latin spiritus, and in Hebrew ruach. There are hundreds of life energy beliefs, which have many similarities. This encyclopedia presents and explains them all. In the introduction, distant origins of human thought are traced, examining how spiritual beliefs and life force ideas emerged, and how they were developed through time. Stefan Stenudd is an author and historian of ideas, who researches the thought patterns of myth in general and creation myths in particular. He is also a high-grade instructor of the peaceful and spiritual martial art aikido, since more than 40 years. Aikido, too, evolved from ideas of a life energy.

Well done introduction for further study of life force theories By Jaroslav Sip I have first edition of the book, which a have bought almost a year ago.First part (mine edition has cca 30 pages, the new one has 24 more) of the book - Introduction - describes the evolution of mankind's approach to life energy from the ancient times of paleolith, rise of agriculture, entry of great world religions, to the Alchymism, Era of Enlightenment and the scientific theories of 20th century. Pity is that the introduction is brief, since there is lot of information mentioned, but on the other hand it is an introduction. The second part of the book is Encyclopedia with entries from A to Z.After reading it, I have to say, that the book is perfect introduction, when you are willing to study the life energy theories in depth - it has a lot of hints and pointers. What I would like to see in its second edition, is some more information from the non-writing cultures, such as Native Americans, Oceania etc. - if there are any, of course. What may also help is bibliography part, which was not attached in my edition. The book does not cover exhaustively the subject, but opens horizons. But what is the best way to study life force, a book or the life?

I was pleased to find this book and although I am not finished reading it I have found it to be informative, if brief. The book, I don't think, was intenced to be a complete work on the subject, but rather sort of a beginners guide to get a person an idea of what sorts of things to look for with regard to the topic of this form of energy. I like the inclusion of other things related to the energies as well as things that have been described as such but are not related to it at all. I think this will be a considerable resource I will return to many times during my current pet project.

Deception and intrigue are everywhere; murder is never far away. When Henriette develops ambitions of her own, she and Gabrielle are drawn into a ruthless fight to take the crown, but there are forces moving behind the scenes more powerful then either of them has realised. The marriage of art and history - and the conundrum of a famous painting(s) By Grady Harp European author Jean Ravencourt embraced a career in scientific research before acknowledging his passion for writing - especially novels that re-visit history. Born in Fontainebleau, France the son of a Belgian mother and British father, Jean inherited his obsession with history and only now has stepped into the role of chronicler of his life long desire to commit his stories to paper - and we, his readers, are the fortunate recipients of his decision.Jean understands history. Sound trite? Then read this book and understand why he is likely to become one of our more important authors of historical fiction. He seduces us with the cover of his book - a famous painting of mysterious origin, and bases his book on that initial core: bare-breasted players in a long-forgotten scene - Henriette nonchalantly pinches Gabrielle's nipple in a painting by an unknown artist, and intended to send an important warning to someone, for behind those crimson curtains, foreign powers were scheming and dealing to make sure that France stayed under their influence. In very fine style he opens his story with a telling prologue: `February 1633 - Sometimes, at night, I sit alone in the parlour and look again at this strange collection of paintings. My life in three images: first the innocent child, docile and compliant; then the scheming manipulator, hopelessly outflanked by greater intriguers than herself; and finally the duped fool, blinded by her obsession to the tragedy taking place right beside her. When at last I stand before the Almighty to answer for my life, I will agree with His scowling face that my sins on earth were many, but I will ask, in my defence, that if He would only take the time to study these works He would understand that my transgressions were not all my fault. I fear it will not be long now until this celestial confrontation must take place. I am old and tired. Tired of this lonely life. I shall miss these curious tableaux though. Hidden in their symbols are the events that make up my memories. In them I see my crimes and my great loves, my rise and then my fall. My companions from those days are all long dead and I am the last to know the story of these wonderful paintings. Long after I am dead and rotted, and my children too, what will our descendants make of these strange bathers? Two bare-breasted ladies staring blankly from their be-crimsoned surroundings. Forgotten players in forgotten scenes. How could future generations know what were our desires and motivations? Who would ever guess the part of these paintings in the story of my life?' Writing rich in detail, seductive in nature, polished in execution.'The story takes us back to the year 1598, proceeds on a monthly (for chapter headings sake) to 1600 that adds 10 years to close the tale. In outline form, `Henriette d'Entragues comes to Court in 1598 when Gabrielle d'Estrees is at the height of her power as the king's favourite. Like Gabrielle, Henriette is exceptionally beautiful and intelligent, and like Gabrielle, she rises easily to prominence in the Court of Henri IV. Perhaps too easily? Observing Gabrielle's bid to become queen, Henriette develops ambitions of her own, and is drawn into a deadly fight for the crown of France. But as both ladies discover to their cost, political scheming is a dangerous game when you are competing with the mighty Medicis. Told through the eyes of Henriette, this is a tale of love and deception, murder and intrigue, where the innocent girl must evolve into the wiley stateswoman to survive - but at what cost?'Throughout Jean's book he places the many variations of the painting that instigated this story - many never really known before, adding at the end some chronological data that seals the story, and it is just this type of attention to detail and enhancement of this story that shares his importance as a new writer. An impressive debut and Highly Recommended to lovers of European history and art. Grady Harp, March 15

A Tantalizing Tale of Greed, Lust and Debauchery By Marta Cheng A Lover’s Pinch is a richly-woven tapestry of historical fiction that tempts the reader’s senses of sight, sound and smell as the author, Ravencourt, effortlessly weaves his tale of greed, lust and debauchery. Marie Touchet, once held to be the “favorite” in the affections of the former King of France, is now married to a lesser nobleman who has fallen from grace. She takes her daughters, eighteen-year-old Henriette and sixteen-year-old Blanche, to Paris for an extended stay in the hopes of finding good matches for her young daughters. Breathtakingly beautiful Henriette catches the eye not only of the current king, Henri IV but also that of his mistress, Gabrielle, Duchess of Beaufort, Royal Favorite to the reigning monarch. However, Gabrielle has her sights on becoming the next Queen of France and enlists the help of Henriette’s scheming mother – with the proviso that their combined union would benefit Henriette as well. For anyone who has ever read historical fiction involving the French aristocracy, you’ll know that greed, lust and debauchery were commonplace. A Lover’s Pinch has all of these narcissistic gems and so much more! Ravencourt’s prose is elegant, refined and effortlessly casts its spell, giving the reader an enjoyable tale, very well told.

Quite a delight to read on a lazy, rainy day By Vinny Author Jean Ravencourt has done a very nice job with this historic fiction novel A Lover's Pinch. A well researched and well written work from the late 1500's set in Paris, France. A classic story line of power, greed, love, deception and murder kept me interested and engaged throughout the book and most importantly, wanting more as I realized the book was ending. This tale fits well within the time period with enough details to draw you in, but not overly done so as to bore you to tears. Although there were a couple of points that the story slowed down, the author did a fine job of picking up the pace again. I believe that what really helped was the fact that it was written from the first-person point of view. I've read other works of historic fiction written from the third-person that simply missed the mark. Fortunately, this was not one one of them. Instead, what I found in Jean Ravencourt's story was quite a delight to read on a lazy, rainy day.If it were not for a friend's prodding and then the other positive reviews for this book, I probably wouldn't have given this title a second glance other than the book cover. My past experiences with historic fiction had me quite jaded to this genre. I'm pleased to say that I wasn't again disappointed. If you are a fan of historic fiction works, I'm sure you'll be pleased as well with this author's debut novel.

You will Adore This By propertius This novel and indeed this writer is thoroughly in the camp of those late Edwardian writers who had not been influenced by the arrival the modernists although he was admired by the likes of T S Eliot who would probably list him as a "moral writer."The story tells of the human machinations revolving around the choice of a new rector for a cherished seat, the societal forces concerning the of the Victorian era as it affects Anglicanism, social mores, generational conflicts, etc. You get the point, this is a novel that is painted with a broad brush and what I found so intriguing is that all the numerous characters are neither cliches nor shallow. Even the town and of course the Cathedral are woven into the woof and weft of the story in a, if not exactly subtle manner, then certainly in an effective way.Not a quick read but a delightful journey.

By Mark A Leach Anyone who is familiar with the Wilderness Battlefield and the Higgerson family history must read this chilling story. While this is a work of fiction, it ties in very closely with the Battle of the Wilderness and the local civilians in the area!I will never be able to walk through the woods near my home again without images from this story in my thoughts.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent historical novel By alex I've always had an interest in historical fiction and books such as "Cold Mountain" set in the Civil War, I found particularly excellent. I would have to add "Built on Bones" to that list. This was a very intriguing, fast paced story set in very difficult times during the Civil War. What's different about this novel however, was the added element of the paranormal. I know that is a bit different but rather than distracting to the story, it added a very fun and unique element. The author's transition from past to present was seamless and very easy to follow. His character development in both eras was compelling and was almost like reading two novels at once. As his novel was coming to a climax I found I could not read it fast enough. Very well done with a very satisfying conclusion.Since the two main characters in the "past" were very young adults, I will be passing this book along to my two teenage children. This work of historical fiction is perfect for adults and "young adults" alike.

Spencer Excellent book!Held my attention from page one.I couldn't put it down. The author helps you visualize the characters as they attempt to survive the impact of the Civil War on their lives. Many books give you the historical perspective of the war, but few immerse you into the lives of people who experienced it firsthand. For weeks after, this book left me thinking about the characters.I would recommend it whether you are a history buff or not.

Ebook PDF The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell, by William Klaber

The memoir is fiction; the story is true.

One day in 1855 Lucy Lobdell cut her hair, changed clothes, and went off to live her life as a man. By the time it was over, she was notorious. The New York Times thought her worthy of a lengthy obituary that began ''Death of a Modern Diana...Dressed in Man's Clothing She Win's a Girl's Love.'' The obit detailed what the Times knew of Lucy's life, from her backwoods upbringing to the dance school she ran disguised as a man, ''where she won the love of a young lady scholar.'' But that was just the start of the trouble; the Times did not know about Lucy's arrest and trial for the crime of wearing men's clothes or her jailbreak engineered by her wife, Marie Perry, to whom she had been married by an unsuspecting judge.

Lucy lived at a time when women did not commonly travel unescorted, carry a rifle, sit down in bars, or have romantic liaisons with other women. Lucy did these things in a personal quest--to work and be paid, to wear what she wanted, and to love whomever she cared to. But to gain those freedoms she had to endure public scorn and wrestle with a sexual identity whose vocabulary had yet to be invented. Lucy promised to write a book about it all, and over the decades, people have searched for that account. Author William Klaber searched also until he decided that the finding would have to be by way of echoes and dreams. This book is Lucy's story, told in her words as heard and recorded by an upstream neighbor.

Review

“In THE REBELLION OF MISS LUCY ANN LOBDELL,William Klaber takes us on high-spirited journey of joy and hardship through a 19th century America that few of us could have ever imagined. Lucy Lobdell seems destined to live out a life of adventure from the moment she crosses over into a forbidden and secret world. Beautifully told, by the time I finished I felt I knew not only Lucy, but had a far better understanding of the America of her times. A first class novel about an truly unforgettable woman.” ―Robert Hicks, New York Times bestselling author of The Widow of the South and A Separate Country

“William Klaber has created a complicated and heartbreaking heroine, or do I mean hero? Whether Lucy is living as a man or a woman, working as a music teacher or a hired gun, I was utterly absorbed in her adventures. A wonderful debut.” ―Margot Livesey, author of The House on Fortune Street and The Flight of Gemma Hardy

“A superb novel. I feel as if I have walked through 19th century America at Lucy's side, celebrated and grieved with her. Klaber tells the story of her adventures with grace and invisible artistry. This is beautiful retelling of a remarkable story, and a fitting tribute to its subject.” ―Imogen Robertson, author of The Paris Winter

“So dead-on it's uncanny . . . an early contender for the year's 'best' lists.” ―Booklist, starred review

“An important book that will take its rightful place in the annals of quality historical fiction.” ―Library Journal, starred review

“A personal narrative about the freedom to live outside the box into which even the unruly frontier wanted to put her . . . a becoming, a mind trying to grasp its own identity and build a life in the face of an uncomprehending world.” ―Historical Novel Society

“Deeply satisfying historical novel” ―New York Times Book Review

About the Author William Klaber is a part-time journalist. He lives in upstate New York on a hill overlooking Basket Creek, a short way upstream from where Lucy Lobdell lived 160 years ago.

The farmhouse he bought with his wife, Jean, in 1980 had a history with Lucy's legend, but he didn't know that till years later when he sat down for breakfast with a longtime local historian who told him Lucy's story and showed him a leather satchel filled with recollections, newspaper articles, and letters about her, gathered over the years. In this collection was a copy of a self-written account of Lucy's early life that the historian had found in an unmarked box in a library basement.

Despite his continued searching, the historian never found the memoir that Lucy had promised to write. Explaining that he had always thought to write a book of his own about Lucy but no longer felt up to it, the historian then handed the satchel to the author.

I have been the family surname genealogist since 1980, and have often been asked for any details I had of her life. William Klaber has done a masterful job of fictionalizing her story. The most impressive aspect of his work is the way he developed Lucy's own personal transition of consciousness about her gender identification. He did it with a delicate respect for what had to be a troubling realization for her. Lucy's introspection about the status of women in her time is one we can all appreciate and learn from. It can teach us that differences among human beings is constant and ever deserving of understanding and compassion. Even though the story is fictionalized, I believe Klaber captured the essence of Lucy's life and an autobiography she always intended to write. Many will thank the author for this gift.

It is a fictionalized history of a person who actually lived. Lucy Ann Lobdell was born in the early 1800′s and her story is amazing. Klaber does a great job of mixing fact with how Lucy would have acted.Lucy was married and had a daughter, Helen. Her husband became abusive so she moved in with her family and he went his own way. Lucy, though, was not a typical woman. She was the type to go hunting and spend a large number of her hours in the woods, wearing men's clothing. After a while she decided life with her family was not how she wanted to live. She wanted to be able to provide for her daughter, who was still rather young at this point. So she left, as Joseph Lobdell. She cut her hair and started wearing men's clothing full time. When she found her first employment, no one ever realized she was anyone other than Joseph, a man. Although, she did get in to trouble a few times when people found out who she really was.The story Klaber weaves is taken from letters, newspapers, and other historical documents. Having been an History Major is college, I find some historical fiction to take too many liberties with their characters and historical events. It is one of the reasons I don't read Historical Fiction very much anymore, because I know what really happened and find myself disappointed or mad at the author. From what I can tell Klaber did his research. Be advised that there is no way to tell what a person was thinking, but given enough reading about their life and letters they have written, you can come extremely close.

I know that's an odd description for a novel, especially one that falls into the historical fiction category, but I just can't think of a better word. This book is just soooo cool. And incredible. And wonderfully written. And you know what's even cooler than the book? The story about how it came to be! (see video below)The BackgroundThe author, William Klaber, fell into the remarkable story of Lucy Ann Lobdell quite accidentally. In the early 1980′s, he and his wife bought a house in Basket Creek, NY. Twenty years later, a researcher named Jack Niflot (who was intending to write a book about Lucy ) called up Klaber and wanted to meet for lunch. He then told Klaber that not only was his house rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Lucy Ann Lobdell (who Klaber was clueless about), but he handed over all of his research on her to Klaber. You see, Niflot was going to write a book about Lucy but was no longer feeling up to it. Klaber, he believed, was the right man for the task. And thus, a story was born! Can you believe it? Luckily for the rest of the world, the research was handed over to someone capable of weaving such a great tale. The BookThe Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell follows the real-life Lucy (Joseph) Lobdell as she makes her way through the world living as a man. Left pregnant and penniless by her husband, Lucy was forced to move back in with her parents and siblings. Frustrated at being unable to provide for her daughter, Helen, Lucy snuck out of her family home in search of "mens work" that would allow her to build a better life for her and her daughter. Lucy had every intention of working for a short period of time, purchasing some land, and bringing her daughter to live with her. What she found, instead, was a life full of opportunities and risks.Living as a man, Lucy began to realize that not only did she prefer the freedoms that were afforded to her, but that she was able to develop intimate feelings for other women. Unfortunately, the precarious situation that she had put herself in made relationships difficult and she was `found out' on more than one occasion. Fortunately, Lucy had a sharp mind and thick skin and was able to stand up for herself when attacked physically, emotionally, and legally for her decisions to live as a man. Even after she was found to be a woman and forced to move around (she lived in New York, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota), she refused to wear dresses and would only wear mens clothes. This is, of course, an incredibly watered-down synopsis of what the book is about. I'm also leaving out some of the really juicy stuff because I don't want to ruin it for you, but I DO want you to know that there is really juicy stuff. Here are 5 reasons why you should read it:It's based on a true storyLucy Ann Lobdell was later believed to be in the first openly "lesbian" relationshipLucy lived in the woods - by herself - for years. The attacks on her, whether verbal, physical, or legal, will infuriate you but also give you something to think about when you can't sleep at nightIt's funny (there is a scene that discusses lady plumpers - however, I do NOT recommend that you Google this)

Rainbow's End: A Young Woman's Adventure, by Doris E Bernhardt

About the Author It was 2008, while riding the train across the prairie of eastern Montana, when this author visualized the challenges of those early settlers. With that in mind and her laptop in hand, Doris began writing Rainbow's End. In this, her 7th novel, she once again creates a suspenseful tale of romance and adventure with heart-warming scenes. While dramatizing the events of this historical era, Doris E Bernhardt uniquely blends the inspired truth of God's Word with her fictional characters and settings. Drawing from her own life experiences and enduring faith, Doris found her passion for writing when needing a stress reliever at night, after working in a large AZ hospital. From poetry, short stories and finally a novel in 2002, she continues to write uplifting and inspiring tales of intrigue.

On her own now, having no other family and only a jar full of money her granny gave her, she joins up with a wagon train headed west, hoping to find her rainbow's end. Along the way she becomes acquainted with Jake Hardgrove, a handsome cowboy who treats her with care. As they travel together and get to know each other better, they begin to experience strong feelings for one another. But Emily knows that someone like Jake could never be truly interested in a country girl from Missouri, especially one who drives a wagon and uses a bullwhip. This becomes evident when they finally reach Fort Laramie and she meets Jake's sister, who doesn't approve of her. If only she was a proper lady. As Emily prayerfully considers the whole situation, her life takes a very different turn when she's captured by White Feather. Scared, alone and looking for a way of escape, she cries out to the only one who can help her. When she finally does escape, she wonders if God is really watching, that is until her prayers are once again answered. When a long time dream is finally fulfilled, she feels grateful to God who had brought her so far, but no matter how she tried, she couldn't forget Jake. Where was he? What was he doing? Does he ever think of her? With so many years apart, will they ever find each other again? What a fabulous story of God's mercy and grace. It was a wonderful picture of how God cares for us even when situations look hopeless. Emily was such an endearing character. One you can truly admire for her sweet personality and her kindness to others, but also for her steadfast faith. I loved all the wonderful nuggets of wisdom she learned from her granny that are sprinkled throughout the pages. What a wise woman granny was. Jake was a great hero. I loved the way he was with Emily and how he saw not only her outer beauty but her inner beauty as well. You'll get a taste of what life must have been like for those who traveled the Oregon Trail and the danger and hardships they experienced. This story is fast paced and keeps you fully engaged from beginning to end. It's loaded with twists and turns right up to the end where the author beautifully ties everything together. If you enjoy historical adventures, then I HIGHLY recommend you travel along with Emily (from the safety of your favorite chair) as she seeks to find her Rainbow's End.*This complimentary copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

Highlanders Without Kilts is a story of love, war, uncommon disaster, and triumph. In 1917, the world was embroiled in a terrible war, the likes of which had never been seen nor imagined. Canada, still a dominion of Great Britain, was early in the fight and sent seven-and-a half percent of its population to fight for King and Country, ultimately contributing a force of more than 600,000 soldiers, nurses and chaplains. In April of that year, the entire Canadian Expeditionary Force, fighting together for the first time, battled their way to the top of Vimy Ridge in northern France. In December, the city of Halifax was rocked by a devastating accidental explosion that caused 9000 casualties. Highlanders Without Kilts is the story of one Nova Scotia battalion’s odyssey, and one family’s dreadful loss. From the unspeakable death and destruction came a nation’s altered sense of self and a newborn path to its future.

My grandfathers brother served with the same outfit highlighted in this great work- the 85th Nova Scotia Highlanders. I learned a great deal about what my grand uncle must have gone through in those dark times. The book is spellbinding. It was hard to put down and I wished it would not end. But it did. The last two pages were quite hard to focus on with the tears in my eyes. You won boys. We knew you would...

Normally, historical fiction falls down on either missing the boat as far as the actual history is concerned, or the characters are drowned out by the scale of events. Not so with this work. Mr. Dauphinee weaves personal history with local and world histories, and also ties together the trenches and the homefront as experienced in Nova Scotia. It is also an important work, for the 85th Battalion personifies and signifies what the Canadian Army and Spirit could achieve, as evident at Vimy Ridge.

SEPTEMBER 1942. As the Wehrmacht solidifies its unassailable hold on Western Europe and stands poised on the brink of total victory in North Africa, members of Thorne’s Hindsight team, alone and spread across the globe, work desperately to bring about a generational advance in American and Allied military technology. For two years, Britain has lain crushed beneath the boot heel of Nazi Occupation. The British government-in-exile battles to control the rest of its crumbling empire as unrest builds in Ulster over broken German promises of reunification with the weak but neutral Republic of Ireland. On the run in Northern England, Richard Kransky falls in with an IRA mission to evacuate to Ireland a man believed to be vital to the Allied war effort… a man whose escape the fanatical Sicherheitsdienst will do anything to prevent. Struggling with conscience and the voices in his own head, James Brandis hides behind the guise of a church curate in an Australian country town as he watches over the safety of a half-caste, Indigenous girl. Born out of the tragedy of the Stolen Generation, her survival lies entwined with Brandis’ agenda for the future. Questions arise over his own existence and true identity however as destiny forces his hand when Brandis is forced to protect her against a violent man with murder on his mind. In Egypt, the last ragged remnants of the British 8th Army prepare as best they can for a final Wehrmacht assault intended to drive the Allies from North Africa once and for all. Arriving in Suez amid wholesale evacuation and camps flooded with tens of thousands of refugees, Max Thorne and Eileen Donelson intend to field-test prototypes of a new and powerful main battle tank soon to be manufactured by the thousands in the United States. Reichsmarschall Kurt Reuters, acting on information from spies and fifth-columnists, devises a bold plan to rid himself of Max Thorne and Hindsight once and for all. As the final German assault on Suez begins and the trap is sprung, Thorne and Donelson find themselves forced into a desperate battle for their own survival as they race toward one last, slim chance of escape.

By Caius The first book in this series was good, solid, and enjoyable. This book felt like being punched in the eyes by a drunken kangaroo. It dragged, it lagged, and it generally spent entirely too much time on longwinded indulgence that may have been attempts at character building and side plot. The main plot itself was ungratifying in it's exposition (mostly due to taking entirely too long do develop due to side trips) and often felt forced through at times as it jumped between the main points of view. The main charm of the first book (and what I had hoped to be the entire series) was a non 'Murica point of view for fiction like this, however this charm lost all its appeal in this book when it broached the line from having an irreverent and irregular main character to a giant freaking lampoon you just wanted to punch for being stupid. The rest of the supporting main characters do have a better go of it, however it's difficult to make the dots connect in a historical alternative when you can't believe the main guy.The rest of the book has some interesting twists and turns, but generally I found it lacking and unable to hold my interest for very long (unlike the first book). Throw in the Lampooning Main character and this is the kind of book I would have just thrown on the ground in exasperation had it not been for the fact it was loaded into my kindle. The third book may redeem the series some in my eyes, with some interesting plot movement, but I'm not sure I want to suffer through the antics of the transplanted characters to get there.

It held my interest even though it was loooong. The editing issues in book one were cleaned up but there were still a half dozen errors. I guess it is like cell phone service, we'll get used to this phenomenon brought on by self-publishing. I miss the line editing done by the publishers, but I don't miss paying twenty dollars for a book. I can live with it. The mentioned errors are few and don't detract from the enjoyment. I will echo the other reviewers in admiration of the depth of historical and technical detail Mr. Jackson brings to the work. The consummate evil of the Nazi regime is vividly portrayed. For the price, it is well worth it and will keep you entertained for hours. Now that I have patted the author on the back I will voice a couple of quibbles. As I I said in my review of the first book the technological enhancements the time travelers brought back were overkill in the extreme to the point in the second book of becoming almost ludicrous. Here is my biggest disappointment. The protagonist, Max Thorne, is not allowed to grow into his part. Here he is, ostensibly the richest man in the world with the fate of the free world in his hands and he is out in the field acting like a company commander. He is getting drunk with the enlisted men in his command, putting himself and game changing technology at risk at the front, etc.Sorry, I can't buy it. This was not consistent with the character introduced in the first book. IMHO. I finally gave it the fourth star because it held my interest, but it was a stretch.I hope Max gets his act together in the next book. I will buy it.

You really need to read Volume 1 to get a good grip on this rather involved plot, but I can assure you that you won't regret it. Reminiscent of the Birmingham time travel series (high praise indeed). Battle scenes and technological issues related to military hardware are very well covered. The author also has a knack for creating empathy within his readers for his characters. Like all good alternate history, the coverage of events inspires the reader to contemplate the nature of the real events which provide its inspiration and offer insights into human nature and the nature of good and evil. I cannot wait to read the next volume, and I encourage anyone who has an interest in alternate history and/or military fiction to take a good look at this; it is well worth it. If I have any quibbles, it is only that there are a few very minor editing issues, but I am pleased to note that they are so minor that they in no way detract from a gripping tale that often has the reader hesitating to put the book down. I can't wait for volume 3.
