Kismet lived a life of poverty, and as a result of her family’s living condition, their mother died. Her sister, Armabetu had ruined their chances to escape poverty by her selfish act of not remaining celibate until her marriage to Leroux DeBroglie, the Prince of Luxembourg. Prince Leroux was banned from his country but before he left, he and Armabetu stole a vast amount from the royal treasure that almost toppled Luxembourg financially. They hid the treasure and vowed not to tell anyone of where they hid the vast wealth. Kismet’s secret life of practicing the black arts enabled her to cast a spell on her sister for ruining their chances to live in royalty. The spell she cast would kill any female child born from her sister’s lineage. However the one known as the “Healer” imbedded a map from Armabetu’s thoughts of the stolen treasure into the royal crest, and burned the image of the crest on the right hairline of Armabetu’s head. The royal crest birthmark would protect all females born from Armabetu’s lineage. But only the first born female child would bear the map of the hidden DeBroglie treasure stolen by Leroux and Armabetu in the royal crest birthmark. Kismet had been waiting ninety years for the first female to be born from her sister’s linage. Nesselorette is the first female child born of the De Broglie family’s linage that carried the royal crest birthmark. Nesselorette was told an old book was found stuffed under the padding of the basket that she was found in as a baby. Kismet disguised as an old woman left the basket on the curb of the Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York City one dreary wintery night. Neither Nesselorette nor others were able to interpret the book written in a strange language. When the book finally was interpreted, it revealed Nesselorette’s true royal identity.

The year is 1755. William Kite, in the wrong place at the wrong time, and had been accused of murder. He needs to get as far away as possible from his native Cumbria. By a twist of fate, and also by vastly exaggerating his surgical skills, he finds himself installed on the Enterprize, a Guineaman, or slave ship, bound for the coast of West Africa. Horrified by the brutality and inhumanity of the slave trade, Kite struggles with the duties in his new life. But when the ship suffers from a devastating outbreak of the mysterious yellow fever, Kite is the only man left who can get the ship safely to shore. From the Guinea coast to the West Indies, Rhode Island to Liverpool, Kite must survive the threats of storms, tropical diseases, the outbreak of the Seven Years’ War and forbidden love ... ‘The Guineaman’ is an authentic and adventurous tale, detailing the first half of William Kite’s fortunes on land and sea. Born in London in 1944, Richard Woodman crewed in a Tall Ships race before becoming an indentured midshipman in cargo-liners at the age of sixteen. He has sailed in a variety of ships, including weather ships, lighthouse tenders and trawlers, serving from apprentice to captain. He is the creator of Nathaniel Drinkwater and in 1978 he won The Maritime Society's Barbara Harmer Award for a work of original maritime history and is the author of seventeen novels. A member of the Society for Nautical Research and the Navy Records Society, in his spare time Richard sails an elderly gaff cutter with his wife and two children.  Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. The Guineaman, by Richard Woodman

From Booklist In the middle of the eighteenth century, young and feckless Englishman William Kite has to flee a false murder charge. The quickest route to safety lies in becoming "surgeon" aboard a slave ship. William takes it and thereafter endures the perils of the slave trade and his repugnance for it; yellow fever and the rapid promotion its toll among his shipmates brings him; and falling in love with a slave girl he names Puella. Landing in the West Indies at the outbreak of the Seven Years' War, he and Puella are befriended by Mr. Mulgrave, a wealthy, civilized, rather Dickensian merchant, but still must face racism and a vividly described hurricane. In the end, William and Puella are moderately safe at home. If anything, the novel is too compact. Still, it will definitely win readers and whet appetites for the sequels British master-mariner-turned-prolific-author Woodman plans. Roland GreenCopyright © American Library Association. About the Author Woodman considered one of the strongest voices in nautical fiction today. He lives in England.

From AudioFile A historical seafaring novel is set during the Seven Years' War of the eighteenth century. Fleeing a false charge of murder, William Kite, a pharmacist's son, joins the crew of a slaver (Guineaman) as ship's doctor. The humane young man chooses from the "cargo" a mistress with whom he falls in love. In the subsequent trials and adventures, this "blackamoor" proves a woman of rare intelligence and character, as well as physical beauty. The prose nicely reflects period usage without being so authentic as to confuse modern listeners. Narrator Dunlop shines in the dialogue but reads narrative flatly. A series of very believable situations (as in Before the Wind by Charles Tyng) woven through by some serious "in your face" action (reminiscent of Thomas Lord Cochrane), this could be three or four novels but printed as one. I was concerned that all of the adventure would be used up in this book, but as we near the end, well.... you have to read it to really find out what happens. Seems, this is only the beginning of what may surely be a powerful series of novels. Richard Woodman bows to no man.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Guineaman By Henry Park Interesting as a historical novel. It moves right along. The plot is borderline believable, and quite a bit of the prose is purple. The subject of the slave trade is the subject of a study which just came out. I recommend The Guineaman for its historical interest.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Richard Woodman's books are always a good read, but I particularly liked this novel By T. Anderson Richard Woodman's books are always a good read, but I particularly liked this novel. In addition to the usual excitement, we meet with the moral issues of slavery and sexism, which were as complex in the mid-18th Century as they are today. We don't get "pat" answers to anything, no "pure" idealism; and that makes his characters and the events believable. The only difficulty I had was with the almost mythical figure of the benefactor. He seemed a little improbable. But then, the saying went, "Rich as a West Indian planter," and someone with more money than he knew what to do with might make the choices that this character made. Really good stuff for people of a wide range of ages from high school upward. I strongly recommend this book.

Nunca se contó nada como esto. Paula decide besar a otra chica. Loque sale a cazar pajaritos.

By Ricky Martino Se lee rápido y invita a reelecturas posteriores, a encontrar las conexiones.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inviting YA blend: superhero adventure, teenage coming-of-age tale, Narnia-like spiritual warfare By Thorne What would happen if Flash Thompson (from Amazing Spider-man) or Whitney Fordman (from Smallville) acquired super powers rather than the sympathetic Peter Parker and Clark Kent. That is the premise of this inviting YA novel which details the transformation of selfish, conceited Hamilton Dinger into the struggling superhero Wingdinger.Johnson so effectively immerses us in Dinger's limited world in the "social elite" of his high school (In Dinger's words, "Someone had to be popular... So it was my duty, my curse and blessing, to be so.") that the first third of the novel can be a painful read. How self-possessed can this teenager be? Known by his "trademark smirk," Dinger celebrates being intelligent, popular, and attractive (receiving "best eyes" in his yearbook) and frequently ignores or belittles those who do not fit his shallow definitions of what deserves his attention.{Johnson's own background in education informs her presentation of teachers at the school (she is obviously having fun with the descriptions and characterization). She reminds us that those who take on the task of teaching high-schoolers deserve our support and sympathy.}We see Dinger's narcissism in his relationships with fellow football players Poncey, Mikey, and Jason, but particularly in his attempts to win Gwen Kessler from drama student Tim, who plays Romeo to Gwen's Juliet in the high school's production of Shakespeare's play.A meteor crashing into the town shakes the status quo, giving Dinger a chance to save Gwen's life, but also exposing him to something that slowly transforms him. The changes begin with dreams of stars, a vision of a menacing cloud with eyes, and a sighting of "a man in black" hurting some thirty people in the stands at the end of the homecoming football game. The last vision distracts Dinger from the crucial play that would have won the game, and those on his team wonder at his failure.Later in the novel we discover the meteor did not give Dinger superpowers, but that he is an angel who has lost his way, who is "slumbering" in a self-centered world. Elysian, a dragon who can shrink to a small lizard to ride in Dinger's backpack or expand to full size for a battle, explains the Prince has sent Dinger to fight the Seven Deadly Sinisters. Somehow Dinger has gotten off-track. This novel portrays the journey back, how Dinger reclaims his sense of mission, and in Narnia-like fashion, there is a crucial encounter with the Prince that helps Dinger to muster the courage needed to face off against the demons. But Dinger does not face them alone. There is a female angel named Starry Night. Although he has intimations he may have a history with her, Dinger cannot decipher who she is. Ah, but, that's another story, and indeed the next book in the series. If you like Narnia, superhero adventures, or coming-of-age tales, definitely give this book a try. I look forward to seeing where the story goes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun and thought provoking read By cactrot The Starlight Chronicles: Slumbering by C.S. Johnson is not the kind of book I normally choose to read. My favorite writer is Arthur Schopenhauer, the father of philosophical pessimism. So when I realized that this book was filled with 'humor' of all things, I was a bit worried. But as I read, I was amazed to find that the book was actually, truly funny. The story largely takes place in the main character's high school, which definitely brought back a lot of memories. It will feel nostalgic to anyone who can still remember the experience of high school. The narrative is told from the perspective of a popular football player, and it is quite hilarious to listen to the sort of things that come out of his self-centered mind. The story focuses heavily on the main character's gradual personal growth, and Johnson does an excellent job of making this process as enjoyable as it is realistic. All of the characters behave naturally; their fears and motivations are things we can all relate to.The writing was excellent. Particularly interesting was a tendency the author had to pass suddenly to present tense verbs when describing the heat of an action sequence. This was a bit surprising to me at first, but I thought it was done really, really well. It really sort of made you feel like you were watching or experiencing the action, rather than just hearing it described afterwards. The book has a lot of character; the main character is lovable, despite being absolutely self-absorbed. His struggles feel real, the questions he wrestles with are very well portrayed. Some of the things one of his friends has to say about relationships are quite profound. As someone who takes a considerable interest in moral philosophy, I found this very refreshing. The book has some very subtle Christian themes, and I thought the way they were presented was very unique. They were central to the story, but they were kept just out of sight where the parallels would not distract from the ability of the reader to enjoy the story without feeling like they were being preached to. This is a pretty significant accomplishment in my opinion, since the book very definitely has a great deal of good things to say. The spiritual themes were very subtle and undistracting but also very strong. To me this is a sign that the author has really thought all these things through. The book was realistic, but also very clean (a difficult balance in a story set in high school). It is definitely a great book for teens and young adults. The story was very well rounded; it starts and ends with a lot of action, and keeps you interested through the whole story. But for all this the story itself seems to be just beginning. I will definitely be looking out for the sequels.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic book, absolutely worth reading. By Jaron Lehman I was very impressed with the overall quality of the book. I'm fairly well-read (considering I'm a high school student), and while this book was not perfect (only a very few are, if any) it was a fantastic start to what seems to be a fantastic series.Speaking slightly more specifically on the main character, Hamilton. This book centers on his journey (of course, he's the protagonist). He will probably annoy you, but in the most endearing way. You will love to be on his journey and see what transformations, if any, take place within him.The characterization in this book is among the best I've read from recent authors, especially among authors' first books. As (again) a high school student, I can absolutely relate to every student in the book at least in some way. The emotions felt by high schoolers are accurately portrayed by C.S. Johnson. There were some spots where phrasing may have been a tad awkward, but since this is a first book it is to be expected. Plus, it didn't significantly detract anything from the story or the overall quality of the book.I can't wait to read the next books in this saga and suggest you hurry up and enjoy this novel so you can anticipate the rest of the series with me (and the rest of its fans).

Essential By lfratan@acad.udallas.edu As a doctoral candidate in classical philology, I strongly urge all serious Greek students to obtain this priceless book - one of the cheapest of the essential shelf of books for the classical scholar. No work comes close. This volume makes Smyth's monumental Greek grammar look childish on the subject of treatment of subordinate clauses in indirect discourse.

The question is: should I buy the William H. Allen edition now, or trust to luck in finding one in a used bookstore? The answer is: buy now. Get two. The quality of the printing, paper, and binding is first-rate. At $26, the book is severely underpriced. With the demise of classical education, it might never be this available again.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Essential for Greek studies By Jon Corelis This review and rating is based on the Wipf edition. Yes, it would be nice to have it in hardbound, and yes, the text isn't as crystal clear as the original (in particular the tops and bottoms of some of the Greek letters are sometimes slightly truncated,) and yes, there is the very occasional small underlining, and yes, linguistics has advanced our understanding of ancient Greek since this book was first published. Nevertheless, all that being said, and since the original edition is rare and expensive, I still give this five stars as something every student of ancient Greek who has gotten beyond the most elementary level should have. I won't go into why: its value will immediately become apparent once you get into the habit of having it at your elbow as you read an ancient Greek text. The quality of the reproduction, while not perfect, is certainly adequate (much better than a lot of republished books nowadays,) and the paper binding at least is fairly sturdy. If you can find a copy of the original in excellent condition for a fair price, or at a high price which nevertheless you're willing to pay, get that one; otherwise, get this one. (Note: it depends on your study habits and some people may disagree, but I myself find a book like this for all practical purposes unusable on any electronic reader.)

Will not be adding this to my survival library By Cathy E Although the title says that it is a guide for when a doctor isn't around almost every section says to seek medical help, or call emergency services, or keep patient comfortable until medical help arrives or until you can get them to the hospital. I also found that the various section were wordy and contained information that was not useful to administering first aid, such as telling the reader the usefulness of snakes in the snake bite section or that the hospital will x-ray a limb to determine if it is broken. If you are looking for a book that explains what an ailment or injury is and what to expect during the medical exam then this is the right book for you. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to help you with medical emergencies when there are no doctors to help, then I'd suggest you keep looking.

In the spring of 1942 the nation is at war. A young ensign is in trouble. He’s in Naval Intelligence and he’s been banished to a small southern base because of a scandalous affair with a suspected spy that has drawn the attention of the F.B.I. and the White House. She is a beautiful Dane who once knew Hitler. He is the son of an ousted ambassador. Jack Kennedy is caught between love, and a hard place. Kennedy struggles between the conflicts of his affair and his drive to join the war in combat. Young, smitten, sick and sidelined he watches while his friends take the path to glory and his father conspires to keep him safe. Young Jack works his own schemes and lands in the South Pacific. Based on the true story, Affair & Honor reprises one of the most incredible tales of battle, destruction and survival in World War Two. It also brings to a new audience the story of a young man, who risked life and fortune, to fight for his crew and his country. Two Kennedy brothers went to war. Only one survived to become President of the United States.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. JFK IN A NOVEL: A PROFILE IN COURAGE By KOMET This novel captures a part of the life of John F. Kennedy that focuses on his military service in the Second World War. (Unlike his older brother Joe Jr., who enjoyed robust health and was the one designated by their father for a political career postwar that would culminate in him being elected President of the U.S., JFK was at times sickly and suffered from a bad back. He had tried to enlist in the Army a few months prior to Pearl Harbor, only to be rejected. It took the influence of JFK's father to get him a place in the Navy, serving in Naval Intelligence in Washington DC.)The story begins in Charleston, SC in April 1942, where JFK had been reassigned, perhaps because of the affair he had had in Washington with Inga Arvad, a Danish journalist suspected by the FBI of being a Nazi spy. A journalist by the name of Sam Marlow of the New York Herald Tribune was also there, ostensibly to get the scoop on JFK's relationship with Arvad, who had come to Charleston to spend some time with him. The author cleverly inserts Marlow as a Zelig-like character (together with his girlfriend, Ashley Chambliss, a popular singer with family in Charleston), who meets both JFK and Arvad. Among some other real historical figures who play roles great and small in this novel are Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy (JFK's sister, with whom he was especially close); George Mead, a Marine lieutenant and scion of a wealthy paper magnate; Tommy Hitchcock, a First World War air hero and renowned as America's finest polo player; J. Edgar Hoover; Joe Kennedy Sr.; Charlie Chaplin; and Joe Kennedy, Jr.At that stage of the war, Charleston is representative of the country as it went about the process of throwing off its prewar lethargy and fully immersing itself fully in the war effort. Rationing had yet to firmly take hold in this grand old Southern town. I liked the way the author fleshed out Sam and Ashley's relationship and their friendships with the Kennedys and their social circle in Charleston. Eventually, JFK, after persistent efforts to get transferred to a more active command that he hoped would get him into combat, wangles his way into training and service with a PT boat squadron in the South Pacific during the spring of 1943. PT boat service is regarded as especially hazardous, as these are fast-moving ships largely constructed from plywood with some armor protection and armed with machine guns and torpedoes for harassing Japanese shipping in hit and run missions. (Sam, however, gets into the war a bit earlier, as a war correspondent. His dispatches, which the author periodically inserts in the novel, help to push it along.)My only major complaint with "Affair & Honor" is that it could have stood for some rigorous editing. Otherwise, this is a novel that gives the reader a glimpse into the character of the man who would later be elected in 1960 as the 35th President of the U.S..

Fascinating look at Kennedy before he was President By Nicole Seitz Affair & Honor by Batt Humphreys makes accessible a fascinating part of US history that many fiction readers might normally miss. Based on the true story of John F. Kennedy when he was a young man, the engaging tale is narrated by Sam Marlow, a newspaper journalist, who begins his journey in Charleston, SC while following Kennedy and his suspected spy lover. Full of historical details and intrigue about J. Edgar Hoover and even Charlie Chaplin, Humphreys brings the past and the South Pacific alive. He alternates with ease between characters and fully embodies them. Aside from some typographical errors, the book beckons the reader to go deeper into the love-and-war affairs of Kennedy...before he was President. Time well spent.

It is part fact, part fiction, but completely enjoyable! Batt Humphreys takes you all over the world, at a time when the US was just getting into World War II. Charleston, S.C., Hollywood, Australia, London and of course, the South Pacific, to name just a few.I'll be honest, I was not aware of the affair which the book is based on, so learning the details of it was quite a treat. It also has a wonderful cast of historical "characters" such as, JFK, Inga Arvad, and J. Edgar Hoover, to name a few. You can tell that Mr. Humphreys did a great deal of research to keep the story historically accurate, and using the fictional character Sam Marlow to tell the story, made it a FUN history lesson. Many of us have heard the story of JFK during World War II, but this story includes a precursor to it, and a postscript. If you enjoy history, you will enjoy this book. I highly recommend it.

Our clothes conceal our naked bodies but what do they reveal about our souls?

"Clothes assume a primary importance as a vehicle that suggests character, provides insights into a person's identity and even governs it…. But the problem is that if Oscar Wilde is correct that 'if you give a man a mask, he will tell you the truth,' then what exactly conveys the truth? Is it the person him or herself or is it the mask, the clothing that he or she wears, that reveals deeper images of self?"―from the Introduction

In this highly engaging look at clothing and identity in the Bible, renowned teacher and scholar Norman Cohen presents ten Bible stories that involve clothing in an essential way, as a means of learning about the text, its characters and their interactions. But he also shows us how these stories help us confront our own life dramas, our own stories, ourselves. In doing so, he once again presents the Bible as a mirror, reflecting back to us our own personalities, ambivalences, struggles and potential for growth. By helping us uncover the garments of the Bible, Cohen shows us how to shed our own layers of insulation to reveal our authentic selves.

Revealing character by looking at clothes By Israel Drazin Authors frequently reveal much about the characters in their books, their attitudes and intentions, their strengths and faults, by describing the clothes they are wearing. Clothing is nonverbal communication. As Polonius advises his son in Shakespeare's Hamlet, "The apparel oft proclaims the man." The Bible uses clothing in the same way. Dr. Norman J. Cohen shows how this is done by discussing ten different paradigmatic biblical episodes involving clothes, thereby revealing the deeper meaning of the tales. Cohen, for example, tells the significance of Adam and Eve's nakedness, the figs they donned, and the clothing that God prepared especially for them; Noah's drunken nakedness after his and his family's traumatic experience during the flooding of the earth, his youngest son's rushing from the scene, and his two other sons covering him without peeking at their father's naked body; Jacob disguising himself in his brother Esau's clothes to steal his brother's blessing from their father Isaac; Jacob presenting his son Joseph with a special cloak and Joseph's brothers tearing the cloak and smearing it with blood to fool Jacob into thinking Joseph was ripped apart and murdered by a wild beast; Tamar fooling Joseph's brother Judah with clothing; Potiphar's wife lying about Joseph's attempted rape by using his cloak; Moses stripping his brother Aaron of his priestly garments when Aaron was about to die; David refusing to wear King Saul's war garments and later tearing Saul's coat; the prophet Elisha donning the prophet Elijah's mantle when he assumed Elijah's role; and Esther, Mordechai, and Haman changing garments and identities. Cohen's relies on how the ancient Midrashim explain the stories. (Midrashim were not meant to be taken literally, but are parables designed to capture the attention of the general public with fantastical stories and using the stories to teach moral behavior.) An example is the clothing that God, according to some Midrashim, made for Adam. This was a unique garment made, according to one Midrashic version, from the skin of the fish Leviathan; it had the beautiful smell of the Garden of Eden. It was passed on to Noah, then Abraham, and then Isaac. Isaac gave it to his son Esau. This was the garment that Jacob put on when he deceived his father Isaac. Esau always donned this special, beautiful, ancient garment when he met with his father; and the rabbis admitted that no one showed greater love for his father than Esau. This was the same garment that Jacob later gave to his son Joseph.Besides using the Midrashic understanding of the biblical tales to reveal the stories' deeper meanings, Cohen shows how many cultures use clothing to express certain feelings, such as tearing clothes is a sign of mourning, and he also uses the stories to teach readers how they can better understand and improve themselves.

Design, build and maintain a home security system with Arduino Uno

About This Book

  • Learn what a security system is, how it works and create one for yourself
  • Develop a security system by setting up security cameras and motion detector systems
  • Manage and analyze all the data collected by the sensors from the security system, using a graphical application

Who This Book Is For

This book is for novice programmers and hobbyists who want to understand how Arduino can be used to program a home security system as well as to those who want to delve deeper into the world of Arduino.

What You Will Learn

  • Run cables and electricity to support home security infrastructure
  • Connect Arduino to your programming environment
  • Learn to interact with output devices – alarms, locks, shutters
  • Understand different parts of electronics circuit (MOSFET, resistor, capacitor)
  • Integrate home monitoring and security notifications with monitoring systems
  • Use logical level shifter with Arduino to send and receive data to and from Raspberry PI

In Detail

Arduino is an open source micro-controller built on a single circuit board that is capable of receiving sensory input from the environment and controlling interactive physical objects. It is also a development environment that allows the writing of software to the board, and is programmed in the Arduino programming language. It is used for a variety of different purposes and projects, from simple projects such as building a thermostat, to more advanced ones such as robotics, web servers, seismographs, home security systems and synthesizers.

This book will demonstrate how the Arduino can be used to develop a highly connected home security system by mobilizing a network of sensors which can feed alerts back to an Arduino when alarms are triggered. You will know the current state of security systems, well supported by the designs that fit best for your environment. Also, we will see some current technologies such as NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and will finally create a complete web interface that will allow us to remotely manage our system, and even send daily bulletins with the summary of activity.

Towards the end, we'll develop a wireless home security system by setting up security cameras and motion detectors (door and gate trips, temperature sensors). We will then set up a centralized remote access hub (powered by the Arduino) that allows sensors to connect to the wireless home network that can be viewed and interacted by the user.

It should have been titled, "Using a Raspberry Pi and a little Java to capture some video and images."If you eliminate the Wikipedia links, irrelevant content and fluff, there are probably about 20 - 25 pages of content relevant to alarm systems, and even less about Arduino and alarm systems.Save your money.

Mr. Castro begins the experience by explaining what the Arduino is and why it works well for projects like these. He then describes what sensors are available and describes how to connect and choose the right ones for your security system. I love that he introduces planning methods and gives good resources in accomplishing a working security design using freely available tools (I didn't know such tools existed and was pleasantly surprised). He also discusses how to implement your design by examples and gives the code that is needed to compile on the Arduino. I was surprised that the book also covers documentation and version control, which is an essential item most of these type of books leave out. There's also small section about using python to create a user interface. This lacks a bit, but is enough to get a person started on the right track. The book wraps up with linking the arduino with a raspberry pi, which is the real reason I bought the book. I wanted to learn how to do this properly. He does give steps to accomplish this but there is really not much explanation other than directions to install libraries and packages. I was a bit let down since I didn't have a clear understanding of it the first time I read through it. I will follow more of the resources when I actually build my devices. (I'm in the planning stages still of my security system).Overall, this book is a good buy, but it does lack in explaining some of the technical details. There is no discussion given to preventing the system from being hacked or hijacked remotely. I would expect a good security system would also include some sort of encrypted communication between devices, especially if it uses wi-fi for some of the communication. With that said, however, you will be able to complete a home security system, but it will need more detail to the interface, and attention to security, if it is to be really usable.

The Arduino is great but I like the Pi better, just a better design for me. The book utilizes python so either unit works well, but you'll have to work on the connections differently. This book is written rather well, some of the areas could be longer but that can be said about any technical book.Pros:Easy to follow alongFairly cheap to construct overall (way less than an ADT system) ~$75 per sensor!Detailed for the most partFunctional Code / Design - Designed with a purpose not an after thoughtCons:Few areas could have been a bit longer but not a huge negative impact

This is one of the most beautiful stories I've read lately. I believe this is the author's first attempt in this genre and believe me, he hit a home run. It was well researched and it really resonated. It takes place in San Francisco at the beginning of Word War 2 when the Japanese Americans on the coast were rounded up and sent away. I kept thinking as they were given a departure date that this couldn't happen in America but it sure did. Before being sent to the camp, they lived and slept in horse stalls at the race track, and that can't have been too pleasant. Before they were shipped off to the unknown, an American boy fell in love with one of the Japanese American girls and it is their story. He tries to keep in touch but her father is against any contact between them. I really didn't want the book to end but it had to so I'd know what happened. This is a beautiful book.

Excellent WWII Historical Romance By Diane H I really enjoyed this historical romance set during World War II between a first generation Japanese woman and her American boyfriend. It was interesting to learn about the Relocation Centers used solely for people of Japanese descent, regardless of their citizenship status. It is interesting that we did not "relocate" any Germanic Americans. While the twists and turns of the love story are what kept me listening to this book, it also includes a mystery and courtroom drama within its story. I listen to audiobooks in the car during my commute to work and this was the first book that I took inside to finish the last 30 minutes before dinner because I couldn't wait until the next morning to hear the book's conclusion. The narrator was excellent as I could tell who was speaking without difficulty.I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Her parents own and operate the best Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood By Paranormaly Yours Torn by the Sun is a Historical Romance that begins pre WWII in San Francisco, and then takes us all the way thru the wars' end. Honestly, I was surprised at how deeply I reacted to the story. I feel I have to share Jesse and Keiko's story with you, along with my thoughts on the whole matter. Lets begin with a short rundown of what their story is about...Keiko and her family are of Japanese decent who live and work in San Francisco. Her parents own and operate the best Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood. They are honorable people that keep to themselves. Jesse is your typical All American young man who works at his uncles realty office near Keiko's restaurant. Jesse lives with his widowed mother and enjoys the single life, until he meets Keiko. Keiko notices right away that Jesse is taken with her. Keiko's father also notices, and commands that she no longer “visit” with Jesse when he comes by for lunch. See, Keiko's daddy is not down with her dating a non-Japanese boy! So the sneaking around begins, lol. I did say short rundown, didn't I? Sorry! Jesse and Keiko are put through a lot from the beginning of their relationship, with the US Government screwing the Japanese residents over, and how this affects Keiko and her family's lives. This story has a lot of historical accuracy in it, which brought to light some things for me. I did not know this is how it was for the Japanese residents, and frankly it pissed me off! I was outraged at the living conditions of the camps their own government, forced the Japanese into after the war started. Treating them like criminals solely based on their nationality was understandable to a point, but then to add insult to injury, drafting the same people into their war after accusing them of consorting with the enemy! The fact that the Japanese harbor no ill will towards this government just shows what tremendous character they have. Keiko's love for Jesse never waivers throughout her world turning upside down, and after her family endures a rape, a murder trial, and above all else the loss of their freedom. I was just speechless about the acts of horror that took place in that camp, speechless. Keiko's character is smart, strong, and confident, one that demands respect. Jesse's character is strong, good natured, and loyal, making him the guy you root for to win Keiko's heart.Jesse and Keiko's story is a sweet romance, one that reminds you of how love can truly stand the test of time, and survive a world war.**Book provided by the author for an honest review**
