"

It is December 7, 1941, in Pearl Harbor when Seaman Second Class Preston Katt sneaks back aboard the USS Callahan after a night of debauchery with a fellow trouble-seeking seaman. After a short night, Katt awakens with a hangover. Two hours after reveille, the Japanese attack.

Katt had enlisted in the Navy to escape Saint Ambrose, Missouri, and his alcoholic momma. But now, in a matter of moments, as World War II escalates into a monumental worldwide battle, his life hangs in the balance as bombs, bullets, and torpedoes whizz past him. As the skies fill with flak bursts, tracers, and diving Japanese bombers, Katt serves as a lookout, a role that quickly propels him into the atrocities of war. Soon weighed down by the deaths of sailors at Pearl Harbor and other battles, Katt is sent back to the States to work. But he is determined to return to the war and fight the Japanese on behalf of all those who died.

In this historical tale, a young sailor must confront Japanese bombs and torpedoes, his own conscience, and a typhoon as he fights in nearly every major battle in the Pacific during World War II.

Written about a time in our nation’s history when the world was in crisis. For full disclosure, I am one of the lucky ones in Jack Zerr’s critique group who heard portions of Preston Katt’s life as he grew up to be a strong man in the U.S. Navy. I missed many times when our group only heard five pages of Preston’s amazing story. However, right from the beginning I loved the story. I won’t be a spoiler, you have to read every page. I will tell you what to expect.Zerr is an excellent writer who knows the Navy about which he writes and he has an excellent command of English -- both are necessary ingredients to create a great story. He does not telegraphy what is going to happen, but as the architect of his stories they are well planned and as a reader it great to feel them unfold page by page.Jack adds a third ingredient to his stories often missing in others. His words convey emotions so you can expect to feel the tension, doubts, desire, and love for our country as the story unfolds. Don’t skip any pages. Relax and enjoy, I’m sure you will also come to love Preston Katt.

By Sarah Angleton This is a work of World War II era military fiction and the author, a US Navy veteran, seems to hit all the right notes, guiding the reader through a vivid and realistic view of life aboard a Navy vessel. The World War II history enthusiast will find a lot to love about this novella as the protagonist Preston Katt experiences the attack on Pearl Harbor and then finds himself thrust into nearly every battle to come in the Pacific. But the best part of the book is the fully drawn character of Preston Katt himself. A young Seaman Second Class on the USS Callahan, Katt leaves behind a youth spent with a mother who wouldn't know how to love him even if she wanted to. Aboard the Callahan and in the midst of war, Katt finally finds purpose, belonging, family, and home.

However, this book introduced me to a number of very likeable characters and an interesting town. I would like to see how Jenny and Ezra live out their lives in Firefly. I did find the romance, but I also found enough action and adventure to make me a definite follower of this author. She made the characters come alive. I'm definitely looking forward to this author's next book(s).

Excerpt from The Barclays of New, York: Who They, Are and Who They Are Not, and Some Other BarclaysThe following pages have grown out of the author's search for the ancestry of his great grandfather, Thomas Barclay of St. Mary's County, Maryland. The interesting matter that came to his notice during the course of that search invited frequent digressions from his own line, until his notes were charged with a variety of material which he felt should be preserved in some permanent form. He accordingly determined to print privately and at his own expense what appears in the following pages; but so many requests have come to him for copies of the book that he has recently decided to place it upon the market at somewhat less than cost, and thus make it readily accessible to all who care for it.He is conscious that in a work of this kind, to which he has been able to give only his leisure hours, errors are bound to creep in, - particularly in tables of descent where it is sought to make a record of precise dates of birth, death and marriage; and he earnestly invites the correction of errors and the supplying of omitted names and dates.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A delightful surprise. By D. Antonio A delightful surprise. I’ve not read this author before and wasn’t sure from the blurb how this was going to fit in with the Black Hills Wolves. But the author made it work and we have fun while she does. I love watching to strong individuals fall for each other. True these wolves have the chemical reaction from finding their “True Mate” but that only gets them together. Making it work is the fun part. I got a kick out of the secondary characters as well.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. BOOK 20 By raa I HAVE READ ALL THE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES AND HAVE ENJOYED EVERY ONE OF THEM. IT'S AMAZING HOW EACH AUTHOR WEAVES A STORY THAT INCLUDES PAST CHARACTERS BUT A NEW TWIST BRINGING IN ANOTHER SET OF CHARACTERS THAT FIT RIGHT IN. THIS BOOK WAS GREAT. THE STORY LINE WAS GREAT. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING!!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Enjoyable Read By ReadingAsFastAsICan There’s a lot of action and some intrigue in Infiltrating Her Pack. The plot was well-thought out, especially with everything that was going on in this story. The weaving of the characters from previous stories in the series into this story is flawless and interesting. While I haven’t read any of the other books in the Black Hills Wolves series, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything as far as the premise of the series is concerned. And it’s a world I wouldn’t mind reading more about.I didn’t feel as much connection with the characters as I would normally expect from a romance, but that didn’t detract from the skill of the storytelling. I give Infiltrating Her Pack FOUR STARS.About my book reviews: They are written based on what I would want to know about a book that the blurb doesn’t cover, and what I think was good and/or bad about the story and/or the writing. I do not give away plot spoilers, unless I feel it is essential for a reader to know (i.e., warning about a potential trigger) and I don’t rehash the storyline.Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

In this inspiring, down-to-earth memoir the revered goalkeeper and American icon  idolized by millions worldwide for his dependability, daring, and humility recounts his rise to stardom at the 2014 World Cup, the psychological and professional challenges he has faced, and the enduring faith that has sustained him.

In The Keeper, the man who electrified the world with his amazing performance in Brazil does something he would never do on a soccer field: he drops his guard. As fiercely protective about his privacy as he is guarding the goal on the field, Howard opens up for the first time about how a hyperactive kid from New Jersey with Tourette’s syndrome defied the odds to become one of the world’s premier goalkeepers.

The Keeper recalls his childhood, being raised by a single mother who instilled in him a love of sports and a devout Christian faith that helped him cope when he was diagnosed with Tourette’s in the fifth grade. He looks back over his fifteen-year professional career—from becoming the youngest player to win MLS Goalkeeper of the Year to his storied move to the English Premier League with Manchester United and his current team, Liverpool’s Everton, to becoming an overnight star after his record-making performance with the United States Men’s National Team. He also talks about the things closest to his heart—the importance of family and the Christian beliefs that guide him.

Told in his thoughtful and articulate voice, The Keeper is an illuminating look at a remarkable man who is an inspirational role model for all of us.

The Keeper is illustrated with two 8-page color photo inserts.

The Keeper: A Life of Saving Goals and Achieving Them, by Tim Howard

Review “Thanks to its honesty, The Keeper is one of the best sports memoirs I’ve read recently.” (Daily Beast)“Inspiring and compulsively readable.” (People Magazine)

From the Back Cover

In the summer of 2014, Tim Howard became an overnight sensation after more than ten years as one of America's leading professional soccer players. His record-breaking fifteen saves for the United States national team against Belgium in the World Cup electrified a nation that had only recently woken up to the Beautiful Game after decades of hibernation.

An estimated TV audience of 21 million viewers in the United States watched Howard's heroic performance against the heavily favored Belgians in which he repelled shots with his hands, feet, legs, knees, and even his signature long beard. In this inspiring and candid memoir, the beloved U.S. and Everton goalkeeper opens up for the first time about how a hyperactive kid with Tourette's syndrome from New Jersey defied the odds to become one of the greatest American keepers in history. The Keeper is also a chronicle of the personal sacrifices Howard's made for his career, including the ultimate dissolution of his marriage and its most painful consequence: separation from his two children.

The Keeper will captivate soccer fans and readers who are unfamiliar with the sport but want to know what makes a world-class athlete different from the rest of us—and where that difference gives way to common ground.

About the Author

Tim Howard is the goalkeeper for Everton in the English Premier League and the U.S. men's national team. He previously played for the MetroStars in Major League Soccer and for the storied Manchester United. In July 2014, he broke the record for most saves (fifteen) in a World Cup game. He also works as a soccer broadcaster on NBC's weekly coverage of the EPL.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic!!! By Kristin D in CA A beautiful blend of transparency and humility. Tim Howard's story is one for all American soccer fans- beautiful insight from his greatest struggle to his rise to fame. The best part being his honest account of his struggles with TS, his fears of failure, and his realization that his marriage had ended. What an endearing ending, which looks to be really the beginning of the best years of his life. Bravo!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Inspired By Cordy Some reviews are critical of the use of sports jargon in the book. To that I say this is an AUTO-biographical work written by an athlete. As to the narrative itself, it is honest and inspirational. I've been a Tim Howard fan since his Metrostars days. I remember the pride of learning a US soccer player had been picked up by Manchester United (the New York Yankees of soccer). I watched all 15 saves in the 2014 World Cup, and doubt I will ever get over that loss. With all that said, I picked up this book mostly curious as to how Howard had suffered from and managed his Tourette's Syndrome. Simply put, I'm now more impressed with the man than the goalkeeper.Great read. I literally couldn't put my Kindle down and now I really need to get to bed.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. You don't have to be a soccer fan to appreciate Tim Howard's story By Nemo1123 This book is the usual sports autobiography but its subject is an extraordinary man with a unique story. Tim Howard is the awesome goalkeeper of the U.S. Men's National Team (soccer) and if you're a fan of the beautiful game I'm sure you're already aware of how amazing he was in the 2014 World Cup. What many people don't know about Tim is how he got to the World Cup and the many obstacles he faced to get there. Tim Howard, hero of the U.S. team, has Tourette's syndrome and has lived with its symptoms his entire career. He talks about his battles as the condition progressed and the ridicule he faced. His autobiography is buttressed by that incredible performance in Brazil but it follows his journey from childhood in New Jersey to his current team Everton in the British Premier League where he is one of their stars. He is using his platform to draw attention to children and families that live with Tourette's.

By susiesgirl My first comment is that I am anxious for Volume Two to be available.Time and talent build the characters and storyline, as the descriptive telling of the tale keeps you turning the pages. It is a welcome relief to read a novel in which duty, honor, fidelity are all ideals to which the hero aspires rather than just being entitled. He sometimes struggles with his choices and actions, but he is decisive and focused on his mission, putting himself last when making his decisions, striving to earn, rather than be given respect. Through the story telling, the reader learns of the politics of the day and how the Church was involved and changing, the strict guidelines of interaction between the nobility and those of lesser stations, and witnesses the development of Eric, both as a leader and as a man.Honesty requires that I admit that I GLADLY used a dictionary to make sure I understood the meaning of the terms used to identify castle structures and armament terms. It only served to paint an even more vivid picture to understand the terminology so adeptly used.A great piece of historical fiction that should be on all history buff or medieval time period lovers reading lists.

By Amazon Customer There are some minor spoilers in my review but quite honestly I'd like to save someone the trouble of reading this so here goes:I really enjoyed this book at first. It was dealing with grief within a family at the loss of a wife and mother. Viewed from the perspective of both father and daughter I found the majority of the book highly relatable and I honestly cared about the characters. I wanted them to heal. What I was NOT expecting was a schizophrenic next door neighbor who pretended her dead husband was still alive to the point that the main characters were pandering to her delusion. Then, to make matters worse, the otherwise intelligent father/daughter duo started hallucinating the dead wife/mom in their OWN home! This was when the book started to break down and things became nonsensical. The introduction of the boyfriend for the daughter made matters worse as he kept insisting to her that he could "fly". Sure, in his dreams maybe. Perhaps even in his subconscious while he was doing his often bragged upon "meditating". But when he REALLY floated during one of his meditative sessions and then "taught" the daughter to actually take off into the sky with him - I was done.If this book had been started as a surreal/magical premise I would have totally gone along with it. But it just seems like bad writing to construct an entire book in a "real life" setting only to let it break down into complete silliness.I lost all respect for the author when the ending detailed the daughter's dad seeing her "fly" in the distance while watching a sunrise. Give me a break.I found several typos throughout but I've come to expect those from free Kindle books. Basically, this author can do MUCH better than this slapped-together weird plot that starts as traditional and ends in absurdity. I'd recommend you save the trouble and take in one of thousands of other free Kindle books that are written much better.

Lovelyn Bettison is a novel that brings warm story about two relationships, about the loss experiences and moving on with our lives.Life for Henry and his daughter Chandra almost stopped 16 years ago when her mother and Henry wife suddenly died. Back then Chandra was a 13 years old happy girl full of life and today almost nothing remained of that girl, while she is just living her day after day.Her father although 16 years had passed from their family tragedy is still overwhelmed with guilt because he worked a lot to make his loved ones happy while spending a little time with them, and then overnight he lost everything. Now he is retired, feeling lonely and old…And then two new people will enter into the lives of a father and daughter; Chandra will find someone to live with, and Henry will find friend and something more in a neighbor who pretends her late husband is still living.Slowly their relationships will start to change their lives for the better…H. Lovelyn Bettison wrote beautiful story about dealing with loss in our lives, about guilt and forever missed opportunities. She builds her, a bit short, story slowly, without the hectic pace, but brings the reader to the discovery of some of life's small wisdoms that although known, we often forget. It’s especially interesting that although young, author sends a strong and beautiful message that is never too late for true love, that age isn’t an obstacle which should prevent anyone in trying again to find happiness and new love. This is the first novel from H. Lovelyn Bettison I read and due to her undisputed talent for writing warm emotional life stories I’m sure she has good perspectives for successful writing career. And due to that I recommend her book to all of us which are living in the crazy rhythm of life forgetting about the little things that make life beautiful…

From a lot of books, you might get the picture that a love story is only for the young. There are two love stories in Flying Lessons and while one does deal with a young couple, the other story deals with two older widowers finding love again after their spouses pass away. It was definitely refreshing to see that love comes in all different shapes, sizes, and of course, ages. This story is about coping with loss and forging a way forward. Henry loses a loving wife and Chandra loses a loving mother when Ava dies. It takes both of them a very (very, very) long time to totally deal with her death. While I understand that when you lose someone very close to you that you never really get over it (been there, done that more times than I would have liked too unfortunately), you do move forward. The timing of the book just seemed strange. When Chandra and Henry begin their respective love affairs, Ava has been gone for over a decade. While I realize that you would definitely still think of a spouse or a parent who passed away after that amount of time, I didn't really understand from the book why Chandra and Henry seemed so stymied in their growth. The writing in this book is decent. At first, there was a little more telling rather than showing. We learn exactly what the characters typically say what they are feeling rather than showing through their actions at the beginning of the story and things felt a bit forced. However, the story eventually evens out and finds its stride in a very pleasing and enjoyable way. This story also has a little taste of magical realism, an effect that I really loved. This element is where the title of the book comes from. It's subtle but it definitely adds a lot to the story.Bottom line: This is a great book for those who love a subtle love story!
