The stars are infallible; one's true destiny cannot be altered. Or can it?A descendant of presidents John and John Quincy Adams, and the black sheep of her family, astrologer Evangeline Adams flees provincial Boston in 1899 to launch her business in New York City. On the train ride, she casts her own horoscopic chart. Her findings--death on November 10, 1932 and an unusual intimate union--alarm her. Soon after, she meets actress and suffragist Emma Sheridan-Fry, and she spends the rest of her life torn between society's restrictions and the trail-blazing nature that made her one of the most prominent female businesswomen of her time. Peopled with real historical figures, including J.P. Morgan, King Edward VII, Enrico Caruso, Rudolph Valentino, Charles Schwab, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Sheridan-Fry (who was known to have been a "companion" of Evangeline's) and occult figure Aleister Crowley, Evangeline The Seer of Wall St. immerses readers in a New York populated with the Wall Street wealthy and the downtrodden, all of whom visited Evangeline's Carnegie Hall office.

EVANGELINE: The Seer of Wall St., by Clint Adams

Review "A fanciful, fictional memoir of the real-life Evangeline Smith Adams, the most famous astrologer of the early 20th century...the story itself is intriguing, the pace is lively, and the pages turn quickly. The author infuses his characters with consistent personality traits, believable motives, and outlooks that are changed by events over decades. Most importantly, he gives Evangeline a fitting central quest: reconciling her confidence in the infallibility of the stars with her own life choices. After this fine historical novel, it's easy to predict new fans for Adams." -- Kirkus Reviews"Star-crossed lovers enchant in this mystical account of Evangeline: The Seer of Wall St. And whether you believe in astrology or not, the novel itself is a magical read with the inspiring backdrop of early twentieth century New York City. The dialogue between characters makes the book, each character carefully depicted by words alone. Evangeline's initial introduction to famous occultist Aleister Crowley was picture perfect and wonderfully bizarre. For fans of historical fiction, the occult, and magical realism, I highly suggest Evangeline: The Seer of Wall St. This novel is a solid bet - it's in the stars." -- The Portsmouth Review"An inherently fascinating and terrifically entertaining read from beginning to end, "Evangeline: The Seer of Wall St."establishes author Clint Adams as an impressively gifted novelist of the first rank. Certain to be an enduringly popular addition to community library collections." -- Midwest Book Review

From the Author It's All Relative In the summer of '62--after filling my tummy with paella at the Gates of Spain restaurant in Santa Monica--my great-aunt Pearl told me with pride, "Clinton Dean, you're a direct descendant of John and John Quincy Adams." Not knowing how to react to this info, nor to the sprawling family tree placed before me, I asked, "Can I eat my custard now?" after having studied the kiddie menu.20+ years later, immediately upon meeting my captive scene partner, Jessica (Paul) Stanton in The Trojan Women at Cal, she asked, "So, what are you all about?" Flashing back to childhood for some reason, I responded, "I'm a direct descendant of John and John Quincy Adams." Jessica next said, "No kidding. Then you must also be related to Evangeline Adams." Busy adjusting my too-short and skimpy toga, I uttered back, "Who's that?" The following year, atop the John Hancock Observatory in Boston, I looked out to the harbor where the Tea Party had taken place. Instigated by Samuel Adams; kin, troublemaker. I liked that. I liked him. For the first time I took 'being an Adams' seriously.Decades later, now a writer, I reflected on a few back-burner projects waiting to be set free. There she was, my great-great _____, Evangeline Adams. Someone I believed to be a part of me.  From 2012-2015, thousands of hours of research, development and refinement went into EVANGELINE's twelve drafts.Hiring a genealogist to determine the exact nature of my familial relationship to Evangeline Adams next became crucial. No way could I truthfully refer to Evangeline as my great, great-anything--once, twice or three times removed--if I wasn't certain. Today I learned conclusively that I'm not related to Evangeline, John or John Quincy Adams. Disappointed? Absolutely. Regretful that I took on this project under false pretenses? Never. In this book, I got to pay tribute to one of America's first female entrepreneurs by relaying a story from a century ago that's equally as relevant today; a total privilege. Evangeline, this is for you.-- Clint Adams, Spring 2015, Northern Nevada

From the Back Cover Six thousand five hundred and seventy days remain in my life, according to my astrological calculations. As a woman of society, now a rather mature woman, decorum prevents me from divulging how many days have come prior. My first began in Jersey City, New Jersey, a locale some might regard as unbefitting a member of America's First Family, but a start to my destiny nonetheless. Nearly three years after the reunification of America's North and South, on an overcast and gusty Saturday, February eighth, at precisely eight-thirty in the morning, the pendulum attached to my internal clock took its initial swing. Its continued movement is something I've learned to never take for granted."Make every moment count...as if your life depends on it," my most loyal client, financier J.P. Morgan, always said while straightening the line of his eyebrows with his forefingers. Wise words from an extraordinary man, a titan whose few vulnerabilities, according to him, were divulged only to me. J.P. never wasted time, or opportunities. This afternoon, I've taken his example to heart. I plan to create a moment that will live on forever. Today, I'll stand firm and show everyone that I truly do matter.

Delightful, humorous, enjoyable and a work of pure captivation - Evangeline The Seer Of Wall st. is the book of the year By j. weaver My prediction is Evangeline The Seer Of Wall st. by Clint Adams is a one of a kind, set in the stars story that you will be talking about months after reading. This is the unbelievable but true account of astrologer Evangeline Adams, descendant of presidents John and John Quincy Adams, who in 1899 launched her own Astrology business in New York City.In a period when women faced hurdles and obstacles, we follow Evangeline Adams as she defends her character in court, was ousted from hotels because of her "witchcraft" trade but ended up influencing and working with some of the most wealthy and influential people in the world.Clint Adams did a remarkable job with the main character. Evangeline Adams was a complex, misunderstood lady, but from the first page, I forgot that the story was being written by a man. How Mr. Adams did this had to be summed up to lots of research, a passion for the project and raw, sheer, justified talent. The only regret I felt was finding out Clint Adams was not related to Evangeline Adams.I love historical biographies but when they are written from the main characters point of view and done right they are an instant masterpiece in my opinion.Other than just a pure joy to read was the pleasure of learning about the differences between astronomy and astrology - Evangeline Adams says, “Astronomy is the study of all objects outside our world. It, too, is a science. Astronomy, you could say, came from astrology. Yes, you are correct when you mentioned interpretation. Astrology is the oldest, most ancient, of all sciences.”“Yes. Astrology is the science which describes the influence of the heavenly bodies upon mundane affairs, upon human character and life. To be most clear-cut, it is a mathematical or exact science deciphered via astronomy, which describes the heavenly bodies and explains their motions, etc.”Being a Virgo , I instantly connected with Evangeline's traveling secretary, a Virgo who was described as "an over thinker." The use of horoscope signs are threaded through the entire story to instantly describe character's Evangeline encountered. What a concept. With a few words of a characters horoscope description, we know all we need to know about that character. WELL DONE Mr. Adams.“Six thousand five hundred and seventy days remain in my life, according to my astrological calculations,” Evangeline said. but at the end she favored and savored each day as you will each page.Delightful, humorous, enjoyable and a work of pure captivation - Evangeline The Seer Of Wall st. is the book of the year that you do not want to miss. It has everything you want in a good story and more. I foresee and predict, you will feel the same, after you have read Evangeline The Seer Of Wall st. by Clint Adams. A MUST read!

By Cold Coffee Cafe “Six thousand five hundred and seventy days remain in my life, according to my astrological calculations.” This is a quote from Evangeline Adams who becomes famous as the seer of Wall Street. Not only is she a descendant of President John Quincy Adams, she one of America’s first female entrepreneurs.Author Clint Adams has learned through thousands of hours of research and development that he is not part of Evangeline Adams’ lineage. His diligent research births this incredible historical fiction based on facts that he presents extremely well while telling Evangeline Adams’ life as an American astrologist.Evangeline navigates adversity at the threshold of the Twenty Century in American society where women just acquired the right to vote, where women were not acknowledged as business professionals and where astrology was kept in the shadows due to “witchcraft” references by the religious and sometimes elite. To help you understand that Evangeline is not a fortuneteller here are a couple of quotes from Evangeline herself as she explains differences between astronomy and astrology to a judge.“Astronomy is the study of all objects outside our world. To be most clear-cut, it is a mathematical or exact science deciphered via astronomy, which describes the heavenly bodies and explains their motions, etc.”If you have an interest in history as it relates to the mindset of the most powerful people on Wall Street and on the world stage this is a must read. Learn how astrology influenced the business decisions that have affected trade, commerce and currency, influence and wealth in America and around the world.Real life influential people including J.P. Morgan, King Edward VII, Enrico Caruso, Rudolph Valentino, Charles Schwab, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Emma Sheridan-Fry (who was known to have been a ‘companion’ of Evangeline's) and occult figure Aleister Crowley sought the expert advice from “Evangeline: The Seer of Wall St.”Get to know Miss Evangeline Adams’ life, business, relationships, romance and internal struggles for answers of her own. This is an interesting quote from Evangeline. “What can be understood is what the stars have in store, the free will we possess and how it affects our destiny. But the ways in which the Almighty intervenes is a concept that left even me baffled. Speaking to clergy had led me nowhere, since every member I’d ever sought out had refused interaction with me. This was what upset me most, for my beloved astrology to be confused with demonology, in addition to me time and time again being written off. How very unfair.”Cold Coffee Press endorses ‘EVANGELINE: The Seer of Wall St.’ by Clint Adams for his ability to bring the reader into this period of time in U.S. History where Evangeline’s services were not commercial entertainment, but surprisingly essential and routine for our country’s, and the world’s, most influential people. We were given this book to review in a PDF format. The review was completed on June 22, 2015. For more information please visit Cold Coffee Press.

In this turn of the century work of historical fiction, set in New York City, Evangeline Adams strives to establish herself as the most famous and successful astrologer in history. Her list of famous clients include J.P. Morgan, Mary Pickford, King Edward VII, Charles Schwab and a host of other well-knowns. Her career enables her to cross paths with other lively characters, such as Aleister Crowley and dramatist Emma Sheridan-Fry--the latter with whom Evangeline shares a loving and intimate relationship. Evangeline's professional star rises on a seemingly endless upward trajectory, weathering (and even benefiting from) a high-profile trial in which she demonstrates her skills in a New York courtroom. Evangeline's personal life, however, is less straightforward as she tries to balance her career and a relationship that needs to remain secret. As the predicted date of Evangeline's death looms ever nearer, she needs to decide what is really important in her life, and whether or not her professional success and fear of society's opinions are worth the sacrifice of her happiness anymore. Before reading this book, I'd never heard of Evangeline Adams; my knowledge of and exposure to astrology was limited to newspaper horoscopes and fortune cookies. To me, astrology has always been, at best, "something fun" but nothing to take seriously, and at worst, just another way for clever people to capitalize on the fears and superstitions of people in need. EVANGELINE introduced me to a different perspective altogether: Astrology as observable, measurable phenomena. A science, basically. Evangeline not only took astrology extremely seriously, she respected herself and her clients enough to make as thorough a study of it as she could. She ran her business with impeccable honesty and stood strongly by her predictions. I don't know if the author, himself, is a follower of astrology or if it was his intention at all to attempt to persuade anybody by telling the story of its most famous practitioner, but to his credit, he lets Evangeline's story speak for itself, and we are left to draw our own conclusions.Clint Adams has cited the enormous amount of research he had to do--the product of which is evident and totally convincing. It's not hard to feel immersed in the time period. I am no expert in the language of the day but I didn't notice any glaring anachronisms. Everything felt authentic. Also important is the fact that Clint Adams, a man (obviously), writes convincingly from the first-person perspective of a woman who lived a hundred years ago! Quite an accomplishment! One theme I found especially meaningful was the idea of living a life of fear. Clint Adams explores this theme by contrasting the success of Evangeline's public life with the failures of her private life. Homosexuality was simply not publicly acceptable in that time period. Evangeline lived in constant fear of discovery of her "inclinations," and of her relationship with Emma Sheridan-Fry. While this fear probably kept her safe from a PR perspective, I believe it led her to forego much personal happiness. Without spoiling the ending I will just say that reading Evangeline's story led me to examine my own motives for doing what I do, and made me want to try to lead a more authentic life. While I felt like the story slowed way down for me in the second act, the theme about living an authentic life(to which the second half of the book was so vital) was so poignant to me that I immediately forgave any perceived errors in pacing. Overall, I was sincerely impressed, with the research, the rendering into story, and the overall quality of the book. We really are in the age of self-publishing, and I sincerely hope to see EVANGELINE: The Seer of Wall St. get the exposure and attention it deserves.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great down to earth vampire series, lol, there are good books!! By Bonnie Sutton Samantha Moon series should be a must read I don't normally buy e-books but after the first one had me hooked I bought the other nine in the series because they were so good and I was sad when I suddenly realized I had just read the last page of the last book. Samantha Moon a wife and mother out jogging one night gets attacked and thinks she's about to die but later wakes up in hospital to realize her life as she knew it will never be the same. Not the same old vampire book; these have real people with real everyday problems and an extraordinary gift? that changes their lives and the way they think in every possible way. Want a good read full of twists, wife and mother now a vampire and how it all gets dealt with. Anyone who wants a good read don't miss these , no winy girls lusting after hot male vampire here, these are real life !!!

These books reference specific medallions, and all the books keep mixing up the medallions. There are FOUR MEDALLIONS. One book says a ruby medallion, one says emerald. One book says, ruby, diamond, emerald, sapphire. The next one says amethyst not emerald. One adds in an opal medallion. REALLY???? One book says the ruby medallion in consumed and has the protagonist destroy an opal and an emerald, or amethyst . . . And the only one left is diamond. Idk, it's too annoying to keep track. It's pulling me out if the stories, glad I'm reading these on kindle unlimited or I'd be even more disgruntled.

Some formatting issues in book one, but otherwise a success By Lauren Alumbaugh Book 8:I purchased this book in the three pack from amazon, it included books 8-10. The book does start was some editing issues, pages are missing, or duplicated. However this only takes place in the first chapter in this book. This series does need to be read in order for complete understanding. Samantha Moon is a vampire, PI and mom. In each book she takes on a new case, but this one hits a little closer to home. Samantha is forced to figure out why bodies are piling up in her city. We also have a few major revelations on her home life, but I was surprised they weren't a little more detailed. Some things really should have had more of a spotlight, not the passing glance they were given. However I do look forward to reading the next book in the series.Book 9:This series is about Samantha Moon, vampire, PI and mom. In this book we follow Samantha on her journey to gain back some semblance of human life. Samantha is also faced with looking back on her past relationships and trying to figure out what went wrong. This series has quickly become my new addiction. If you are a fan of the paranormal, ghosts, vampire, werewolves, witches and more than this series is for you. It also takes a unique and refreshing look on them which is a very welcome treat.Book 10:This is an addictive series about Samantha Moon, vampire, PI and mom. This series does need to be read in order for complete understanding. I will say this book could have been one of my favorites, but there were some noticeable errors with the plot/story line and character development. For one Samantha's age changed, her time as a vampire decreased and a fact about her leaving traces (fingerprints etc.). I've been reading this series back to back so they were extremely noticeable to me. However the story's overall plot line was more paranormal than others, I didn't like how the case she was investigating was never fully closed to us. We got the basic information and were forced to piece it together, now if we are right or wrong will probably never be known. This is the only book that I feel truly was rushed, it needs a little more polishing to me. However I am addicted to this series and will continue to read it.

It is more than just a technical write up about features and style, it is a thoroughly pleasant and engaging read that sucked me into Clojure faster than an airplane toilet flush. You could give this to a non programmer and they'd still finish it just for the pleasure of it.The lessons are carefully thought out and unique. From learning asynchronicity to the lyrics of Lady Gaga, to learning about thread lock in the context of drunken dwarves, every chapter is fresh and (in all honesty) beautiful. The technical content is also just fantastic. I had some previous lisp experience, but this book was my very first contact with Clojure and it took me from knowing nothing to being able to tackle the first 70 or so 4Clojure exercises like a pro.

Roy Daniel H is Clojure's answer to the famous "Why the Lucky Stiff" of the Ruby programming language. You see, Ruby is well known as a friendly and fun programming community, and one of the reasons for that was the whimsical and beginner-friendly "Why's (poignant) guide to Ruby". The Clojure community (similarly made up of very friendly and helpful programmers) is very lucky to have a stellar writer like Daniel Higginbotham writing for us. A book like this plays a crucial role in onboarding new programmers and creating the vibrant and cutting-edge community that is Clojure.I used "Clojure for the Brave and True" to get started with Clojure, and I can't imagine starting any other way. I've also read through "The Joy of Clojure" and others, but those are a little tougher to get through. Brave and True walks through everything from getting your text editor and environment set up, to language basics, to more advanced concepts, in a sensible and steady progression. The book is filled with clear and colorful examples, as well as some very bad puns - and when you're tackling a new language, you need something to break up the learning routine!I've been programming Clojure almost daily for coming on a year now, and I still find myself referring to Brave and True to brush on more advanced concepts like multimethods and async programming and macros. If Clojure is your first or second language, the book will teach important concepts as it teaches the language; if Clojure is your n+1 language, it's a competent and lively walk-through of all Clojure's highlights.I still marvel at the sheer inventiveness of the writing style, cast of characters, and analogies. Daniel, if we ever meet, I'll buy you and your war-axe-wielding dwarves a beer.

When word of the Pony Express being formed reached Clay Roswell in Texas, he decided to get a job as a rider. He was told his best chance for employment was along the desert stretch in Nevada Territory, so that was where he headed.Along the trail, he met two brothers, Jess and Hoke Pickard, and agreed to team up with them, at least as far as Salt Lake. They made camp one night in Weber Cañon, east of Salt Lake, but as Roswell lay in his blankets, the Pickards tried to club him to death. They stole his money and his horses and left him for dead. It took Roswell a long time to make it to Fort Churchill in Nevada Territory, and when he finally did, the Pony Express was shutting down and the only jobs available were with crews hired to string telegraph wire across the desert. And it was there in Fort Churchill that Roswell saw the Pickard brothers again, applying for work with the superintendent of the telegraph company.Roswell’s brawl with the brothers then and there made for an unlikely introduction to superintendent Jack Casement, but he liked what he saw in Roswell and offered him the job as wagon boss for the outfit. But the fight with the Pickards was not over, and conflict with Indians as well as an organized gang of hijackers would only add to the challenges now facing Roswell, a simple man looking for an honest wage.Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns—books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians—are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

His father's death brings threats to the safety of Joe's underground home: guilt over the broken relationship that can never be healed, a mysterious box of papers inherited from eccentric inventor Nikola Tesla, and a ruthless enemy determined to steal those papers no matter the cost.

Mystified by why his inheritance is so valuable, Joe and his service dog, Edison, follow clues left a century ago by Joe's famous ancestor to reveal the power of his family legacy. While Joe must rely on his considerable talents as a hacker, he must also reach out to friends.

But whom can he trust as he battles to save his beloved city from...The Tesla Legacy?

By theenglishmajor I was very excited to get a pre-publication copy of this novel as I have been waiting patiently for the next chapter of this story. The second installment in the Joe Tesla series is even better than the first. This time we dive a bit little deeper into Joe’s family and his personal background as he races against time to prevent a dangerous, lethal invention crafted by Nikola Tesla from getting into the wrong hands. Hampered by his crippling agoraphobia, which requires him to be more inventive in forestalling his foes, Joe needs to rely on the assistance of others including his ever-faithful companion, his dog Edison.I continue to be swept up and fascinated by the atmospheric surroundings of Joe’s world, which includes any underground passageway he manages to find and navigate. The tunnels underneath Grand Central Station indeed become an additional character in these novels. I certainly do not suffer from synesthesia like Tesla does, but I will admit to seeing his world in the sepia tones that this series evokes. Just as the character is tied to his underworld, the reader will imagine no sunlight in this book.Cantrell did a superb job of researching not only Nikola Tesla’s world, but also creating a WMD of creative proportions that is the focus of this thriller. I love the fact that aside from the use of the Internet in this story, the novel itself could have taken place in the forties. We have a modern hero that we somehow do not see in a modern way. That is what adds to the charm of this series and what make it unique.I loved the book and look forward to the next Joe Tesla adventure.

Superbly written! Fast-action from start to finish. I love that this novel begins with Nikola Tesla. Rebecca Cantrell really outdid herself with in-depth research and then putting to words little tidbit facts of Tesla's life that so many are not aware. Following down a path of time to a distant relative who suffers from agoraphobia. Meaning he cannot leave the tunnels underneath the city of New York City due to his phobia of being outside. His faithful dog is there every step of the way assisting Joe Tesla in the adventure that he finds himself suddenly trying to solve. The Oscillator is a real invention. Tesla's earthquake machine. And, the real oscillator has never been found. Until Joe Tesla's father passes away and leaves an inheritance to rival ALL inheritances! A suitcase filled with old papers that are directions to making a machine. A machine that is the beginning of a thrilling adventure that will take the reader breathlessly from one tunnel to another. Adventure awaits! The bad guy is a weasel that we are allowed to read his thoughts and follow his disturbed inner desires. Unfortunately, he also has enough money to match Joe Tesla dollar per dollar in getting what he wants. A game of chess that will be played out under the streets and in some of the more well known buildings in New York City.Fantastic book! Start reading this one when you have a three day weekend! You will not be able to sleep until you've finished the last savory word!

By Dean Kutzler International Thriller Writers’ Best Ebook winner, Rebecca Cantrell, has an award-winning series on her hands with the Joe Tesla Series! Joe Tesla and his brave-heart, adorable service dog, Edison, are back with another thrilling hit adventure sure to keep you on the edge of that seat! I'll never rob you of the excitement of reading with a detailed outline of the book, but I will tell you that the adventure is amped, times 2! The voice of the novel, like the first, shines through--nary a cloud in sight and the characters are written so vividly that you don't notice the sentences, words, paragraphs, etc. This....is the kind of novel I love. A novel that truly makes you forget about the world around you. A novel that plunges you into a different world. A world that is impossible to leave once the last page (if you notice the pages) is turned! Another element that I treasure when reading is the "learned" factor. A story is great and all, but one that excites, thrills and reveals interesting TRUE facts is a story penned for greatness. Nothing thrills me more than learning something while enjoying a story. Oh? Did I mention the plot? CLEVER, CLEVER, CLEVER! Stop reading my balderdash, and start reading The Tesla Legacy to discover it for yourself! Then you'll know what I'm talking about! Have I ever steered you wrong?

Girl of My Dreams: A Novel, by Peter Davis

Review “Nostalgia in a novel, especially in a first-person narration, has to be earned. From the opening suicide of a stuntman—“taker of all falls”—a screenwriter recounts “the damage I caused in bygone days.” This is a bildungsroman of Hollywood dreams and cover-ups, a novel of “failure and conspiracy” on a lavish scale. “Movies and fame: what a perfect marriage, each dependent on projection,” the young writer observes, after admitting: “I’m the sucker who tells the story because the rest are gone.” There’s even a daughter named after a movie studio, and the Communist Party is, finally, just “another dream that had been imported to Southern California.” Perhaps our screenwriter’s most challenging story is telling a little girl that her mother has been murdered. When the Communist witch-hunters are raging in Hollywood, our writer runs off to Rome and buries himself in spaghetti Westerns. A fast-paced novel of ambition, deceit, and disillusionment, Girl of My Dreams is as thrilling as a hit movie; yet it’s also an indictment of the way the movie business works. The language is impeccable; the architecture is so tightly constructed that the ending is both inevitable and not what we’re expecting.” —John Irving, National Book Award–winning author “Thrumming with kinetic energy, Girl of My Dreams is a mad dash through Hollywood in the 1930s. With insight and humor, Peter Davis explores the magic of filmmaking, the vagaries of fame, and the lives of the many players and participants—from directors to actors to writers—who populate this outrageous and captivating world.” —Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Orphan Train “Girl of My Dreams is irresistible. It has been a long time since I read anything so interesting in every way.” —Joan Didion, National Book Award–winning author

About the Author Peter Davis is an author and Academy Award–winning documentary filmmaker (Hearts and Minds). The son of screenwriters, he grew up in Los Angeles. Girl of My Dreams is his fourth book and first novel.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. GREAT NOVEL OF 1930's HOLLYWOOD By Avid Hiker A finely detailed and deeply resonant story of Hollywood in the 1930's. There is the glamor, of course, which plays uneasily against the gray backdrop of America's Great Depression. But there is also the story behind the glamor: the struggle to create films that will provide entertainment for a country hungry for dreams of better times, of better places, of energy and light. Davis shows us the studio system at the time of its greatest power--bosses ruthlessly exploiting whoever they think might create stories that will bring them money. Caught up in this greed is an ever-shifting hierarchy of actors, directors, set-designers, stunt men, every one of them desperately wanting to be recognized by someone important--who is likely to be only temporarily powerful. Peter Davis knows this world: he grew up surrounded by people who had worked in and lived through this period. And, as an adult, he knows the film industry well, having directed "Hearts and Minds " an Oscar-winning documentary on the Vietnamese war. GIRL OF MY DREAMS is told by a writer who knows the history and the details of the business. GIRL is a great story that rings completely true. The quality of the writing is extremely high. The characters come so fully alive that the fictional figures are every bit as believable as the real ones the author brings in. And the narrator has so many fascinating stories to tell. This is a terrific novel about the film world of the 30's. I highly recommend it.

" and then through his other wonderful writing in various publications over the years By Roloru This is a "must-read" first novel for those who appreciate the work of Peter Davis and you should! If you are a follower you know him through his Academy Award winning documentary "Hearts and Minds," and then through his other wonderful writing in various publications over the years. Always sensitive, thoughtful and smart, Peter doesn't let us down with this riveting take on Hollywood life in an era that fascinates those of us who like history and understand how it informs the present and future. He writes with a seriousness of purpose and a sincere sense of humor. Go for this book....it is fun and educational in equal proportions.

Very evocative story of Hollywood in the 1930s, which some first-rate characters and terrific scene-setting. Really left me with an emotional response that lingered after I was finished. Highly recommend.
