The definitive biography of the most legendary basketball player of all time.Drawing on personal relationships with Jordan's coaches; countless interviews with friends, teammates, family members, and Jordan himself; and decades in the trenches covering Jordan in college and the pros, Roland Lazenby provides the first truly definitive study of Jordan: the player, the icon, and the man. When most people think of Michael Jordan, they think of the incredible moments so ingrained in basketball history that they have their own names: The Shrug, The Shot, The Flu Game. But for all his greatness, there's also a dark side to Jordan: a ruthless competitor, a gambler. There's never been a biography that balanced these personas-until now.

Michael Jordan: The Life, by Roland Lazenby

From Booklist Lazenby, author of an acclaimed biography of NBA great Jerry West, correctly points out that there have been enough books written about Michael Jordan to qualify as a genre. So why another? In order to reveal, Lazenby says, more of Jordan’s true self, his complex, almost bipolar personality. Jordan, we learn, driven by his hypercompetitiveness, could go from being a gracious person off the court to a vicious antagonist to teammates and opponents. As Jordan’s fame grew, Lazenby shows, he became its prisoner, and his isolation worsened after his father, Michael’s anchor in a world of sycophants, was murdered. Lazenby also digs into the rest of Jordan’s family, noting that Michael was estranged from the family for a time over a dispute between his then-wife, Juanita, and his mother. Lazenby’s resources include the vast printed Jordan library as well as interviews conducted recently, along with gleanings from the author’s years on the NBA beat. Readers who have immersed themselves in the Jordan “genre” will be familiar with much of what’s detailed here, but MJ’s life is a movie worth watching again, and Lazenby adds enough deleted scenes to add some oomph to the familiar story. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Interest in Jordan remains high, and this biography will be heavily promoted and is sure to receive coverage beyond both book pages and sports sections. --Wes Lukowsky

Review One of Amazon's Best Books of the Year: Sports & OutdoorsOne of Chicago Public Library's Best Books of 2014A Goodreads Choice Award Finalist: History and Biography"In his thoughtful, extraordinarily well-researched biography "Michael Jordan: The Life," Roland Lazenby... gives us the life and much more.... The exhaustive narrative of Jordan's basketball career is written with appropriate awe. But what makes this portrayal especially worthwhile is everything else."―Mike Greenberg, New York Times Book Review"An utterly definitive biography.... The most comprehensive attempt yet made to explain the factors that have gone into producing the most famous basketball player and marketing phenom in the history of world sports....I don't know how it would be possible to write a more complete biography of him."―The Chicago Tribune"When a world-class biographer writes about a world-class athlete, you have a biography for the ages. This is the ultimate study of Michael Jordan, and I know you will be as captivated as I was."―Pat Williams, Orlando Magic senior vice president, author of Coach Wooden's Greatest Secret"Revelatory.... A fascinating examination into the lonely, prideful man behind the glimmering icon."―Publishers Weekly"Roland Lazenby's new biography of Michael Jordan is as breathtaking as a dunk by 'His Airness.' ... A richly detailed, thoroughly researched book.... Lazenby expertly sifts through the myths to produce a definitive portrait of Michael Jordan."―Bob D'Angelo, Tampa Tribune"Right from its early pages it's clear that Roland Lazenby's biography of Michael Jordan is in full-press mode to be the best volume ever written on perhaps basketball's greatest player.... Lazenby's a born researcher and some serious legwork went into gathering all of the quotes and facts here, which add up to a kind of Jordan-centric encyclopedia."―Colin Fleming, The Boston Globe"Lazenby's thoroughly enjoyable biography is an impressive portrait of a man consumed by his competitive ambitions. It is also by far the most complete book on Michael Jordan to date.... Essential reading for all sports fans and particularly for those interested in American cultural history and popular culture."―Library Journal (starred review)"A lot has been written about arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, but Roland Lazenby's Michael Jordan: The Life is easily the definitive version. The journalist has covered Jordan's career for nearly thirty years and his knowledge of the game and of this miraculous player shows in what is one of the best sports biographies in years."―Parade"What makes this portrayal especially worthwhile is the long trail Lazenby follows before the awesome career even begins."―New York Times Book Review's "Editor's Choice""It's not every day that I'm blown away by a book about a sports figure. But MICHAEL JORDAN: THE LIFE, by Roland Lazenby, ranks up there with the very best: The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn, Friday Night Lights by Buzz Bissinger, and Joe DiMaggio by Richard Ben Cramer. The depth of reporting, his frequent ascent into poetry, and his intelligent analysis of the life of this complicated, fascinating American icon deserve Pulitzer Prize consideration. For the first time I understand what makes Michael Jordan tick. I was captivated, fascinated and beguiled from beginning to end."―Peter Golenbock, New York Times-bestselling author of George and In the Country of Brooklyn"Lazenby looks beyond the on-court exploits of a sports and cultural icon to find the complicated, and often contradictory, man behind the myth."―ESPN Holiday Gift Guide"Studded with insights."―Kirkus Reviews"Resplendent... A definitive, multidimensional portrait of a man and a legend, and a notable contribution to sports literature."―Miriam Tuliao, BookReporter"Lazenby's book is impressive in its research. There are details bound to surprise even the most die-hard Bulls fan."―Mike McGraw, The Chicago Daily Herald"The definitive portrait.... The dream of the non-fiction writer is to condemn future books on the same subject to irrelevance. It's possible Lazenby has achieved this lofty goal: nothing more needs to be written about Jordan."―Adrian Lee, Macleans"A comprehensive look at the life and times of the man and the legend.... A great work for any sports enthusiast and B-ball fan to read about one of the best that ever came to the game."―Brook Stephenson, Ebony"Lazenby is one of the best, most thoughtful and thorough people writing books on the NBA today, which makes all his books fascinating reads and great looks at the psychology of teams and great players. His stuff is must read."―Kurt Helin, NBC Sports' Pro Basketball TalkLazenby is "the Michael Jordan of writing about Michael Jordan."―MSNBC's The Cycle"Lazenby's prose soars as dramatically and excitingly as does his subject. Jordan appeared to fly through the air; Lazenby makes time fly as readers immerse themselves in an extraordinarily competitive life. Does any biography deserve 700 pages? When you read Lazenby's Michael Jordan: The Life you'll be hard-pressed to answer anything but yes."―Michael Levin, New York Journal of Books"MJ's life is a movie worth watching again, and Lazenby adds enough deleted scenes to add some oomph to the familiar story."―Booklist

A Great Commentary Of The Legend; A Shallow Treatise Of The Man By Raze Micheal Jordan:The Life is an average biographical work of a sports icon whose career was larger than the game of basketball, and any other sports figure in the history of sports. Roland Lazenby's account of our beloved MJ fails to deliver anything new or exciting, and the book comes off as just another familiar sports column. Sure, he covers much of MJ's basketball career, but he clearly steers past major obstacles-positive and negative-in MJ's life, with only scant details, i.e., Operation Push's Nike Boycot, and his refusal to endorse African American Harvey Gantt in the North Carolina Senate race against Jesse Helms because "Republicans buy shoes too." How did these decisions impact MJ, family and friends, African-American teammates, and the African-American community?MJ's family life is only remotely mentioned, many marital infidelities are oddly omitted, inplying that his affairs surfaced toward the end and after his basketball career. How did all this impact his wife and family? Also, Lazenby writes that MJ was a proud father, but fails to give any documentation to his Airness's fatherhood experiences; how his legend impacted his boy's (Marcus and Jeffrey) basketball careers, and how his failures affected all his children's (3 total, at the time) childhood experiences. Lastly, the book ends rather abruptly, leaving almost a blank concerning future plans of MJ's Charolette Hornets, his children's successes-life journey, and his new life with current wife Yvette Prieto. It would have been interesting story concerning MJ and Yvette Prieto's first meeting, and how she ultimately won MJ's heart. And what of MJ's estranged relationhip with his mother and siblings? All of these questions are strangely ignored as the book comes to a close.Did I enjoy reading Micheal Jordan:The Life? Sure, any book written about Micheal Jordan will always be facinating because it's written from a different perspective. However, I don't view Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life as anything definitive, one could simply read former biographys on MJ and recieve the same information. As another mentioned, Lazenby's writing wasn't top notch either, personally, I felt at times he lingured too long on miniscule details and ranting which often detracted from the story. This book is all about MJ's superior drive as a dominate competitor; where did Lazenby dismantle MJ's legend and present him in raw human form? However, in spite of Lazenby's failure to give us a vunerable MJ, I believe that Lazenby's ability as a sportswriter fit exceptionally well, especially when describing with sports commentator finesse MJ's amazing on court prowess, and the Bulls incredible run to six championships.Personally, I believe that most have rated Lazenby's Micheal Jordan:The Life with 5 stars out of pure loyalty to MJ. Like millions blessed to witness the Jordan era, I'm still enamored with a man who once defied gravity, multiple obstacles, and willed himself and his teammates to absolute greatness. However, it isn't Air Jordan's spectacular legacy up for critique, MJ's career is unprecedented, but rather this particular compliation which is poorly written and worth only 3 stars. Perhaps, Lazenby, in the years to come will have an oportunity to improve upon 'The Life' with a much needed reissue: Micheal Jordan: (Inside) The Life, and he will have produced an original and definitive volume on 'The Life' of Micheal Jordan indeed.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive and well-researched, Lazenby's biography offers an impressive detailed account of Jordan's storied careers. By Bookreporter "The rarest talent is like a comet streaking briefly across the sky, captured only by the trailing flash of its brilliance." In his resplendent biography of Michael Jordan, veteran sportswriter Roland Lazenby carefully chronicles the Hall of Famer's journey from his humble beginnings in Teachey, North Carolina, to his startling transformation to "His Airness.""Personality-wise, he's a study," said former Chicago Bulls assistant coach Tex Winter of the six-time NBA champion. Lazenby offers nuanced insights into the basketball phenom's character through soulful and, at times, wistful family narratives. To understand the full force of MJ's wondrous life, Lazenby opens with the poignant story of Dawson Jordan. Born at the turn of the 20th century in a shotgun shack on the banks of North Carolina's Coastal plain, Michael's great-grandfather was a looming authority figure who possessed immense physical strength. In his youth, Dawson engaged in dangerous forestry, taking down trees, then bundling and floating the logs downriver to Wilmington's shipyards. In his lifetime, he was a lumber mill worker, logger, sharecropper, moonshiner, hunt club cook and determined survivor.Lazenby portrays James and Deloris Jordan as thoroughly devoted parents, preparing their five children to become citizens of the world. "The greatest impact of their parenting came in the constant shaping of the children's attitudes," Lazenby writes, "they preached a constant refrain: Work hard. Achieve. Set goals. Think ahead. Don't be denied. Be considerate. Don't dwell on race."Jordan's ability to listen was among his most impressive attributes, and his relationship with his mother made him receptive to coaching. Lanzenby notes that Jordan would come to call Dean Smith his second father and found Chapel Hill a safe harbor largely because of the family atmosphere that the Tar Heels coach built. There are many tender episodes of familial love sprinkled throughout the book, including father-and-son basketball trips and backyard baseball games. But Lazenby also sheds light on the myth of Jordan's perfect upbringing, such as a home plagued with marital discord, money problems and allegations of abuse.Daily heated one-on-one games with his stronger, older brother, Larry, resulted in constant thumpings. These physical backyard battles informed MJ's approach to the game both as an amateur and as a professional. Whether donning the uniform for Laney High School's Buccaneers, North Carolina's Tar Heels or the Chicago Bulls, Jordan's m.o. was to seek out the best player and try to dismantle them. Lazenby says, "Each opponent loomed as a Larry to be conquered."Comprehensive and well-researched, Lazenby's biography offers an impressive detailed account of Jordan's storied basketball, Olympic and baseball careers, as well as his wide-ranging business interests. MICHAEL JORDAN: THE LIFE is a definitive, multidimensional portrait of a man and a legend, and a notable contribution to sports literature.Reviewed by Miriam Tuliao.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive! By J. R. Anderson The content itself is great. This issue here is how much you want to read about Jordan's ancestors and early life. I think some of the negative reviews I've read have overstated it, though. By about 15% into the book, you're already dealing with Jordan's high school (varsity) playing, and his recruitment to UNC. From there, the remaining 80-85% is lots of new tidbits about the life you already know: college, the NBA, and post-pro life.If you're really looking to jump into an inside look at the parts of Jordan's life that you're already somewhat familiar with, skip the first 10-15%. That said, slogging through the early stuff makes the later stuff feel more satisfying.

By Dad of Divas Jen Green has written the text and Christiane Engel has illustrated this book to produce a learning resource for children and parents about animals around the world . You will not only learn about interesting animals , but their specific characteristics that make them unique. There are beautiful photographs to accompany the text. I definitely learned about animals I had not seen or heard of prior to reading this book. One such animal is the solenodon which is a long nosed animal that eats insects and lives on the islands around Cuba. Another interesting fact concerns a reticulated python which is the world's largest snake reaching a length of 23 feet. There are fold out pages to help your child see an entire continent . There are pages that illustrate a smaller specific region too. Each page has a section known as "record breakers" where you will find important information about animals of that region.I believe this will become a favorite book for you and your child to just pick up and read together. It certainly would have a place in a home resource library or a classroom.*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, is the eldest son of William the Conqueror yet the two men spend much of their lives at odds with each other. Robert's disdain for his cruel father's obsession with power and William's impatience with his son's lack of focus drive them apart, despite Robert inheriting the Conqueror's prowess for military strategy and his physical courage. Only Queen Matilda, wife of William and mother of Robert and his brothers, is able to keep peace between them. But King William isn't stupid. He looks to his son's attractiveness to women to create advantageous political alliances. So he isn't pleased when Robert, instead of making a match among the nobility, takes up with a blonde stable girl, Morberga, and presents her as his lady at court. But Robert won't be told where to love and is appalled when he finds his new sweetheart, the raven-haired, fiery horsewoman he thought he'd encountered by chance, is a Welsh princess placed in his way by William scheming for a united Wales. William is also quick to deploy Robert's talents both on the battlefield and in the diplomatic tent to ensure the security of his domains against Scottish King Malcolm. Perhaps William forgets that the king's ward Edgar is a bosom pal of Robert's...and that Edgar has his own claim to the English throne. Impaired by his father's ambitions for a Norman empire stretching from Northumbria to Italy, Robert does his best to defend honour without compromising principles, and to appease his father without becoming his pawn. His friends and other relatives are a mixed blessing. In the murky world of medieval politics everyone is angling for themselves, and sometimes Robert de Belleme, uncle Bishop Odo and brother Henry are just as much a threat to Robert's safety as his enemies. This is a wide-ranging and carefully researched tale of love and war, empirical ambition and everyday life. It illuminates the life of a man whom history has ignored, a man who might - and should- have been king.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By Marsha Robert the Wayward Prince Book One: The Getting of Empire by Austin Hernon tells the tale of the not-so-well-known oldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert. This story of Robert begins in 1079, thirteen years after the Battle of Hastings and the Norman takeover of England. Robert, who was about 12 when his father conquered England is now aged 25 and is out and about practicing war games in the borderlands of France. He is there after another disagreement with his father. So begins the pattern of Robert's life. A life full of conflict, love, and adventures.Robert had a great many conflicts with his father William, many arising from Robert's way of ruling which disappoints and angers his sire. Robert excels at military campaigns and diplomacy which William takes full advantage of as in his dealings with Malcolm of Scotland. When William dies he leaves Normandy to Robert who becomes Duke and England to his second son, William Rufus. Robert and William Rufus get along for the most part but some conflicts do arise as when William Rufus thinks he can rule Normandy better than Robert. William Rufus will also make use of Robert's skill in warfare and diplomacy in certain of his dealings. Thrown into the mix is William the Conqueror's third son, Henry, who is left money but no land when William dies but will scheme for the land denied him. Throw in a great many rebellious Norman lords and Robert had his hands full. The novel covers all the conflicts Robert endured.Covered in the tale is Robert's loves, such as his first love Morberga and a Welsh Princess Tegwin, the mother of his two sons, Richard and William. Tegwin, a love of long standing, is made to suffer long separations from Robert as he tries to govern Normandy. While the story does contain some graphic language in the love scenes, one can feel for Robert and Tegwin enduring their separations and the mutual love and respect they have for each other. One adventure highlighted in the book is Robert's journey to meet Matilda of Canossa, Italy, a fascinating lady of history. We see the journey Robert and his mesnie have to endure and the friendship that develops between Robert and Matilda. Further adventures await Robert and the reader as Book Two: Robert Warrior of the Cross will be coming soon.If you are a reader who likes a long, adventurous story that covers a great span of time then this book is for you. Austin Hernon writes with authenticity of the time period. One can feel they are part of Prince Robert's mesnie as they attack their enemies or as they travel around Normandy, England, and Italy, so vivid are the descriptions. I greatly enjoyed reading Prince Robert's story and look forward to reading his continuing adventures in the Holy Land coming in Book Two. I leave you with a quote found at the beginning of the book by the author which so profoundly describes Robert and his life.Be certain good princes, that when you defy convention you should also write your own history- else those whom you did frighten or discomfort will gladly write it for you. Or worse, bury it

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating adventure, historically credible with a strong central character By Georgina Faye A fascinating and gripping story based on fact about the Conqueror's overlooked eldest son. He managed to avoid inheriting the crown of England - he nearly killed his father by accident, and later didn't make it to his deathbed - and so the story of Robert Duke of Normandy is not well known. If this book is a guide, it deserves to be. Meticulously researched, this is convincing history, yet it provides the essentials of a successful novel: strong, intriguing characters and a suspenseful adventure story. Add in a few battles and a lot of sex and this is history like it never was in the classroom. Can't wait for Book 2, and Robert's adventures in the Crusades.Note to historians: I'm a history graduate and sometimes historical fiction even by the most popular authors makes me grind my teeth. This didn't. Relax and enjoy.

Gut-wrenching By Kerry Whalen “Twin Marines in Hell: From Grade School to Vietnam,” is a gut-wrenching first-person account of brothers John and Jerry, transforming from seventeen-year-old “boys” on the seaside farmlands of Howard Beach, New York, to “maggots” physically and mentally abused by the Marine drill instructors of Paris Island, and finally onto “Leathernecks” who served proudly for our country as United States Marines in South Vietnam.“Twin Marines,” is a great read for anyone interested in the trials and tribulations of true American heroes who valiantly and voluntarily served this great country back in the ‘60’s.I was only disappointed when I ran out of pages to read. Well done Jerry.Semper Fi.

By Joseph This was a great book about two twin brothers that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about a Marine's first hand account in boot camp and tour in Vietnam. The author took a gentle approach to an awful war without getting into the more serious side of a solider on the battlefield and his account of boot camp is sure to make you laugh out loud. Great book - Thank you!

Proud to be an American By GrandmaluvsAmazon Having grown up in the same town as the author, I was anxious to "trip down memory lane" and recall all the places we all would haunt on a daily basis. This book more than satisfied my nostalgic passion. Beyond that, the voyage into the Marine Corps. and the Viet Nam experience has me totally enthralled. I was a little concerned that it would turn into another "guy book" but I've been pleasantly surprised. Any lady who came through the 60's and Viet Nam, will be totally enthralled. Well done Mr. Byrne and a much belated "Thank you for your service". May your brother rest in peace.

Design, build, and deliver efficient Java applications using the most advanced NoSQL database

    About This Book

    • Reuse the skills you have acquired through Hibernate or Spring to promote your applications to use NoSQL storage
    • Explore the list of libraries that are already available to assist you in developing Java EE applications with MongoDB
    • A step-by-step tutorial to create leaner and faster applications using MongoDB

    Who This Book Is For

This book is for Java developers and architects who want to learn how to develop Java applications using the most popular NoSQL solution and the use cases of it.

    What You Will Learn

    • Install MongoDB and its client tools
    • Set up a basic project that uses a MongoDB driver and performs CRUD operations with it
    • Explore simple strategies for mapping Mongo documents with Java classes
    • Use bulk operations to speed up the creation of massive documents
    • Design and develop a Java Enterprise application that uses MongoDB as storage
    • Develop and deploy an application that uses Hibernate OGM as a persistence layer for your entities
    • Use Spring Data and Spring Boot to leverage micro-services using MongoDB as storage

    In Detail

The NoSQL movement is growing in relevance, attracting more and more developers. The MongoDB database is a well-recognized rising star in the NoSQL world. It is a document database that allows data persistence and enables you to query data in a nested state without any schema constraints and complex joins between documents.

This book provides all the knowledge you need to make MongoDB fit into your application schema. It starts with a basic introduction to the driver that can be used to perform some low-level interaction with the storage. Then it moves on to using different patterns to abstract the persistence layer into your applications, starting with the flexible Google JSON library to the Hibernate OGM framework and finally landing on the Spring Data framework.

By the end of this book, you will know everything you need to integrate MongoDB in your Java applications.

I was mostly using lucene as a "Document" based search mechanism but have been interested in trying out MongoDB. This book definitely helps you get from zero knowledge to something you can use in a UI. Mongo is super nice given you can interact with native JSON. The book gets right down the the stuff you need for your job... insert / read / update / delete and search. The section on indexes is definitely invaluable. Not a big fan of spring/hibernate so the last few chapters were a wash but overall this is a great book for java devs.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice book to develop yourself By Vinay The book gives insight about the depth and usage of the technologies. However, the author could have included more of the practical stuff.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. No water, clear data. By Michael This book is divided on two parts. The first one describes you about, as usual for this type of book, the basics of Mongo: how to install and configure, create CRUD helloworld project. On java, of course.I liked that, because author offers a nice comparison between SQL/NOSQL and wrote about transactions. For example, could be useful for PM to urge the customers.Understanding of bulk operations, indexes and embedded documents can help your app do faster inserts and queries. The second part is about deploying the app in JEE-Container (WildFly in that book) and using most popular object-mapping frameworks: JPA and Spring Data.I found useful GSON library to parse JSON objects and, of course, Spring Data over Spring Boot. In last case you can understand both native Mongo API and Spring Data API. Unfortunately, i did not see any definitions of data modeling. For example how to construct embedded-embedded documents with @DBRef and other technics.

An authoritative, entertaining book about our accents, and what they say about us Some people say scohn, while others say schown. He says bath, while she says bahth. You say potayto. I say potahto And—wait a second, no one says potahto. No one's ever said potahto. Have they? From reconstructing Shakespeare's accent to the rise and fall of Received Pronunciation, actor Ben Crystal and his linguist father David travel the world in search of the stories of spoken English. Everyone has an accent, though many of us think we don't. We all have our likes and dislikes about the way other people speak, and everyone has something to say about "correct" pronunciation. But how did all these accents come about, and why do people feel so strongly about them? Are regional accents dying out as English becomes a global language? Witty, authoritative, and jam-packed full of fascinating facts, You Say Potato is a celebration of the myriad ways in which the English language is spoken—and how our accents, in so many ways, speak louder than words.

By Bob Ralston This is a delightfully written book, and it arrived here in California with amazing speed.I finished reading all of it in just one evening; I couldn't put it down.Especially interesting was the map displaying the names of the numerous regional accents in the U.K. -- a great eye-opener to an an American such as me, who must travel 1,000 miles to encounter a noticeably different accent.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another great Crystal-clear book By Annie Martirosyan Another great Crystal-clear book. It is written in the form of a dialogue as you read a chapter by David Crystal followed by a chapter by Ben Crystal. This delightfully creative form of the book gives the impression of a live talk, and if you have encountered the authors before - you will almost "hear the accents".Ben Crystal's tongue-in-cheek footnotes add a similarly creative dimension to the book as a reproduction of a live talk as does his beautiful narrative. As usual, you will find David Crystal's writing insightful, detailed and at the same time reader-friendly. The different perspectives that come from the background of the authors as a linguist and an actor make the book a really successful collaboration.Volumes can be written about the fascinating variety of English accents (or any accent, for that matter). In this lovely little book you learn why the Birmingham accent has been getting a bad press, how to "sound blue" (!), how to resurrect an accent (or, sound like Shakespeare!) and much more. And as the title says, you say potato and add your accent to the record-breaking collection of "potatoes" on the innovative accent map along the likes of Stephen Fry and Jeremy Paxman http://www.panmacmillan.com/book/bencrystal/yousaypotato.I highly recommend the book to all accent hunters and lovers.

By bookaholic What great fun of a book from expertly hands (or ears?).I bought another copy for a friend after she became intrigued by the title when she caught me reading it. The title is an allusion to the song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" sung by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the film "Shall We Dance".By taking turns at every other chapter, the authors discuss not only the English accents but the often extreme attitudes towards accents and times when things have been really called off because of an accent!A great Christmas gift for the language geeks out there!

When the right space pilot walks into his bar, a desperate bartender uses all his wiles (and tentacles) to talk the man into business and his bed--but the spacer is still enslaved by his past and isn't sure he can deal with a two-handed lover, much less one with six. When the supply shipments stop coming, Teo Houdin needs all his tentacles to keep his waystation bar open. Facing a riot by thirsty miners stranded in the backwater of the galaxy, Teo helps a greenie space pilot buy a ship in return for a regular haul of liquor. But he longs for the courage to invite the enigmatic spacer to fill his lonely bed as well. Still smarting from his newly implanted navigational ports, Jimenez knows owning his own ship will prevent him from ever being bought and sold again. For a former slave, transporting cargo through the emptiness of space sounds like paradise, but after meeting the compassionate and sexy Teo, his heart feels empty, too. At the edge of the galaxy's spiral arm, can Teo convince Jimenez that the heart has its own tentacles and theirs should be entwined forever?

An emphasis on the people rather than the science, with an interesting spectrum of human nature By BookCat Length: 34,000 wordsFrom the blurb and cover, I wasn't sure if "The Klockwerk Kraken" would be just sex or have a plot and good characters. Luckily, it was the second."The Klockwerk Kraken" has an emphasis on the people rather than the science and shows an interesting spectrum of human nature—from the fact slavery still exists in some systems to Teo’s enormous, close family. Jimenez's story is sad but also uplifting, and Teo (a descendent of genetically altered humans) is interesting and relatable. Both have earned their way to where they are (for different reasons), and while Teo is relatively happy with his bar (apart from the delivery issues), Jimenez still struggles to free himself from his past and the effects it has on his mind. The ‘verse was well thought out, the geography researched, and the cultures interesting. For a novella, "The Klockwerk Kraken" actually covers a fair number of events and I enjoyed it enough that it is now permanently on my ereader. I also looked up the author’s other stories. Definitely a good read for any sci-fi/futuristic/fantasy story lovers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Do yourself a favor and read it. By Angel_T Imagine reading a story set so far in the future that it's hard to comprehend. People aren't just people. They're spacers, Pods, and ex-slaves. Two of these just happen to meet in a wonderful little bar called the Kraken. Both characters (Jimenez and Teo) have complex backgrounds. They're also relatable. Anyone that's survived extremely traumatic events can find a bit of themselves in Jimenez. Honestly, Jimenez was my most favorite character. He's struggled through so much and managed to come out on top. Aidee Ladiner has definitely outdone herself with this story!! I loved it!! It's one of the better sci-fi stories that I've read lately because it tosses you in this world, but gives you all the pieces you need to understand it. To know what's going on and live in the story with the characters. The pace flows nicely; however, page 100 on is guaranteed to make you cry. If you're human. I definitely shed a few tears during the trial. There are so many different themes filtered in through the story. The programming associated with years of abuse, finally being overcome for starters. It' amazing seeing the characters grow and change into the strong well defined individuals that are loved by readers. Aidee certainly knew what she was doing when she wrote these characters. I hope she continues more of this wonderful world!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected By Lori Vandenburg This was not what I thought it would be. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the story. Teo is such an open and warm person. Jimenez is more closed off, but very determined. They have such an interesting story. It definitely was a different perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys sci-fi, paranormal, and/or erotica. Aidee Ladnier did an awesome job writing such a compelling story. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher through Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.
