For the next seven years, Silas struggles to stay alive as he grows from boy to a man. His adventures lead him to a Wyandot Native American Indian village, through the Appalachian Mountains with a pair of French fur trappers, and eventually to a Spanish mission that is being built. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very enjoyable! By Stacey Renner The story of Silas Freethorn is a wonderful adventure story from a first-time author. The setting elicits memories of early colonial era schooling long dormant for this old reader, but certainly familiar for a teen student. In addition to the interesting history, the coming of age experiences Silas shares with us are meaningful for the old and young alike. The story unfolds quickly and keeps a lively pace. If you start it on a Saturday afternoon you may very well know the ending by the time you put it down! All-in-all an enjoyable read---highly recommended!

I plan on reading this book with my class this year in collaboration with my social studies partner. The story pays great attention to historical facts and has action, drama and a little bit of romance! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and missed Silas when it ended.

By Krista Reville This is a wonderful story that addresses the history of the Puritan era in a way that has yet to be done. The story captivates the reader with elements of adventure, young love, and the threat of a life lost... A must read for all!

England, 1817

Captain Lacey takes a post as a secretary at the Sudbury School in Berkshire, a school for sons of the wealthiest merchants and bankers in England. As soon as he arrives, Lacey discovers that he's been hired for more than his letter-writing skills. A series of disturbing pranks have kept the school in an uproar, and the headmaster expects Lacey to discover the identity of the prankster.

The problems intensify when a groom from the school's stables turns up dead in a lock of the nearby canal. A Romany is arrested for the murder, and Lacey is the only person who believes him innocent.

As Lacey works to discover what happened, he gets drawn into the secrets of Marianne Simmons, the actress who lived upstairs from Lacey in London. Marianne swears Lacey to silence, which puts a new strain on his friendship with Grenville. Meanwhile the intrigue surrounding the murder becomes as murky as the waters of the canal itself and puts Lacey and Grenville into deadly danger.

The Sudbury School Murders won the RT Book Reviews Reviewers Choice Award for Best Historical Mystery.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Finally, an actual mystery! By L. J. Roberts These days, it's not easy to find a true mystery; a murder, clues and a solution. This is just such a book! Captain Lacey is an interesting character, one whose merits are seen and valued by others much more than himself. He is a strong, appealing character with a history and unresolved issues. Lacey is supported by interesting secondary characters an a vivid depiction of the time period. The dialogue is well done; neither so focused on being of the period it slows down ones reading nor so modern as to be anachronistic. The story is involving so that I read it straight through. I very much enjoyed this book but it is best to read the series from the beginning. The good news is that the 5th book is due out June 2006.

I decided on a whim to read it. Was I every surprised. I loved it. I promptly read all four that are now available on kindle. The mysteries are good, with always a little twist in the end. The main characters are well-drawn and you really care about them. I am looking forward to the novella coming out in June and the other books coming out each month. I think they are some of the best period mysteries I have read. They rank right up there with the Nell Sweeney Mysteries that I also loved. Keep them coming. They will be at the top of my kindle list to read. Thank you, ms. Gardner for a great series!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great series By Austen lover I am so glad I stumbled on this series by looking for cheap new ebooks. Ms. Gardner writes a wonderful murder mystery. In book #4, Lacey is off to the countryside to become a secretary to a boy school headmaster, or so he thinks. The headmaster demands him to determine who is behind all the school boy pranks but worse occurs when Mr. Denis' old thug is murdered by the school. Again, Lacey defends his honor and helps those who can't help themselves by attempting to clear the Roma stable hand accused of the murder. All the old characters re-appear, with more character development. In each book, more information is revealed about Lacey, Grenville, Marianne, and the Brandons.READ THESE BOOKS!

From the far edges of the Empire, two women come to battle on the hot sands of the arena in Nero's Rome: Afra, scout and beast master to the Queen of Kush; and Cinnia, warrior-bard and companion to Queen Boudica of the British Iceni. Enslaved, forced to fight for their lives and the Romans' pleasure; they seek to replace lost friendship, love, and family in each other's arms. But the Roman arena offers only two futures: the Gate of Life for the victors or the Gate of Death for the losers.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed it. By Amazon Customer This is a great novel. I'm not sure what else to say.Regarding the setting, first I'm not intimately familiar with the historical period concerned. That said, nothing rang false, and it certainly seems meticulously researched. She did a lot to bring the time period alive.Regarding the characters, there's such a rich cast, and they are so diverse. Almost all the characters that come to mind (and all of the ones that stand out) are female, and have a range of personalities and characteristics. On the emotional journey of the characters, well, I found the book to be a bit of a roller coaster. There are highs and lows throughout the story. I really enjoyed some parts, and other parts left me angry, or sad, or worried for the characters. The action sequences were well done, and some of them were quite awesome. I particularly enjoyed the arena sequence with the cheetah's. And the opening/ending scene. I suppose its natural that those would stand out.Overall, I loved it and would recommend it to practically anyone.

An amazing and totally original and unique novel By InkedRainbowReads FourStarsI was sent this book by Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review. An amazing and totally original and unique novel. Such a strong range of female characters are depicted, courageous, brave, cunning, deadly, deceitful a complete gambit of credible and totally believable women.Ms Justice has certainly done her research and this is evident in this convincing tale. Countries are travelled, religions explained, rituals rationalized all this while a relationship between two dominant females unfolds. For me this novel was a learning experience in conjunction with a sensational story line. If you are looking for a novel to pique your historic interest while keeping you transfixed with an audacious narrative then this book will not disappoint. The only reason I did not award this 5 stars was my slight disappointment with the rather conventional ending.I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.~Chris

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Memorable and original By Tony Faith L Justice has a deep fascination with the world of ancient Rome and her passion for this lost era shines through in her new novel, Sword of the Gladiatrix. Like most readers, I came to the book with mixed expectations, wondering if it was going to be a cross between Spartacus and Xena, Warrior Princess. Right from the start, however, I was gripped by Faith’s great writing style – and hardly put it down until I reached the end.I remember being told once that no book was ever improved by a prologue. Faith proves this wrong, as she sets up a ‘cliff hanger’ which the reader spends the rest of the book hoping to resolve. I particularly liked the way two stories, of different culture (either of which could have carried the book alone), interchange and gradually merge in the melting pot of the Roman Empire. The two heroines of Sword of the Gladiatrix are memorable and original, and Faith has achieved the difficult challenge of making me care even about the minor characters. The love scenes were handled sensitively and provide a counterpoint to the inevitable savagery of the gladiatorial arena. Highly recommended – and I’m hoping there is going to be a sequel, as I’m keen to know what happened next.

So this is a good story that is superbly written in the beautiful English that prevailed. It is easy to read and offers more than a glimpse on the efforts made, during the acme of empire, to encourage young people to be brave, decent, and innovative.

Only after the rescue can Jason return to the Lilly, his highly advanced Caldurian vessel...where it all began.

The elusive Admiral Ot-Mul, leader of the Craing Drac-Vin forces, has not only survived, but thrived in the far outer-reaches of space. With hundreds of thousands of warships under his command, Ot-Mul's combined fleets are on the move. But, in truth, he cares about little else than making one man suffer...Captain Jason Reynolds.

With an enormous fighting force on the horizon, it's the last call to battle. Will the decimated Allied worlds reunite one more time? Will Ot-Mul get his vengeance by taking those most dear to Jason - Mollie, Boomer, Nan, and Dira - and using them to rip Jason's world and his very existence apart?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Miracles on Demand By graycat98 Potentially the last of the Scrapyard Ship novels. Another reasonably good action space cowboy/war story. It's the human race (and a few friends) against vastly superior numbers of the evil Admiral what's his name and his space armada. While I kept rooting for the success and survival of all of the characters created in the prior novels, it takes more than a village to accomplish that task. I still have the feeling that each predicament and miracle solution was created by sitting around a table, drinking copious quantities of beer (or beverage of choice) while watching old Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and even some Dr. Who episodes, with an occasional MacGyver thrown in for fun plot developments. Still a light and fun read and, I suspect there will be other "spin off" books to come with either Boomer and Mollie, or Captain Reynolds and Dira, or Captain Stalls and his smart alec brother...and, of course Ricket.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Call To Battle: Scrapyard Ship Book 7 - a Fitting End to a Great Series. By Myles Marcovitch I've read every book in this series and really enjoy it. It's just fun Science Fiction. There's lots of cool stuff, plenty of things which force you to suspend judgement, but all of it works. I like the alien characters and how they interact with the heroes. After 7 books you get to know the characters very well and feel like you know them. McGinnis' writing style is uncomplicated. He doesn't rely on lots of flashbacks to confuse the reader. The plot flows in straight lines so it's an easy read. Almost too easy in fact, since I get through the series' books in two days. But I'm reading for enjoyment and relaxation, not developing deep insights or introspection. Phase shifting is the key element the story relies on to make for interesting battle situations. That and some very superior battle armor. I'm not saying more for I don't want to spoil the fun.

By jjdrymiller Surprising! Book 7 of Jason and crew and the Scrapyard Ship. I've had some heartburn with previous books in series and Mr. McGinnis' failure to find solutions to elements like Stalls and Ot-Mul; or to the romantic relationships. I was concerned as this book progressed that we were having more of the same. I was wrong. Mr. McGinnis finally gives us some solutions. Well I'm still a little vague on why Stalls isn't dead. This really was a great wrap up to the series. Battles fought; realationships strained and strengthened; loss and hope.My hope is that we have more of Jason and Dira; Ricket and Traveler; and as much of the gang as Mr. McGinnis can get in.

The Roman fleet has been defeated and the threat of invasion removed. Arthur Britannicus has taken the throne as Imperator – Emperor of Britain. He is a symbol of hope, uniting the fractious tribes of Britain who have been oppressed and mistreated for so long. However, as the threat from Rome retreats, the intimidation from Saxon warlords intensifies. Arthur must draw his sword and muster his forces again if he is to keep his island under British rule. While Arthur builds his cavalry and trains up his army, his old enemy, Maximian, Augustus of the West, plots his downfall. Seething over Arthur’s execution of his general, Constantius, Maximian will look to take Arthur's kingdom - and his life. War again seems inevitable, unlike victory. Arthur Imperator combines myth with historical fact to tell the compelling story of the rise of a legendary British Emperor. For fans of Tim Severin, Robyn Young and Simon Scarrow.

Tour de Force of 3rd century Britain military and Emperor Carausius, Arth, the Bear, who deserved never to be forgotten By Coolfire Author Paul Bannister in Arthur Imperator has again demonstrated his outstanding research abilities to reach back into dim ages and vividly describe, in detail, as it was. Whereas the book is fiction, it is a tour de force in well researched historic detail.“Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius, Dutiful, Fortunate, the Unconquered”, (original in Latin, discovered Roman mile marker) - “Arth,” (from Ginas, first Britain written historian), Celtic for “The Bear,” was indeed very real, though little known to our modern age.The coincidences between his brief bright comet across early Britain’s history are too many to rule out that he indeed may have been the origin of the Arthurian legends, for Ginas was the first by far to note the “Warrior of Battles,” Arth, the Bear. On his Roman coins, the face of the Bear looks as if it comes right out of his neck, the latter resembling the neck of a bear.In Arthur Imperator Arthur serves as the vehicle for Roman, Saxon, and various tribes’ tactics, strategies, weapons, practices, living conditions, food, supply & material considerations, transport, intelligence, etc. This Arthur is written into the rich, detailed military environment of the time. Bannister focuses us upon that which Arthur himself must focus for strategic and tactical considerations, and does so constantly. This novel is not a love story; it’s a story of the toils of a man pulling together tribes while constantly fighting betrayals and invaders.Understand, this series of books are historical framed within fiction, with some changes in sequences and fates of some of the historical players. For those interested in some of the background of the real man, Carausius, the Bear, you will find the closing chapters, “Historical and other notes,” and “Arthur and Carausius: legend and links” well worth your time.Privately, my first research paper, seemingly centuries ago, was written on Arthur, and I had never heard of Carausius. I sincerely thank author Paul Bannister for bringing to light a man who never should have been forgotten.

Delighted to say the sequel more than stacks up. Blood and guts, valiant action, devious and tragic characters - I truly feel for the sorceress Caria; her exeunt left me in tears - while rip-roaring sea raider Grimr had me cheering like a madman. A hugely entertaining read, along with nice slices of obviously deeply researched history. Bannister puts you right there in the middle of it. (Caveat emptor - you will learn more about how to crucify someone than you might wanna know; and - short of the resurrection of the Roman Empire - certainly more than you will ever need.) If some Hollywood mover and shaker doesn't see the potential here ("Braveheart" south of the border, with a much bigger land- and seascape) there's no justice. Arthur rules!

Arthur Imperator By Book Worm From Mission Viejo I got hooked on Paul Bannister's thrilling and captivating series about King Arthur's battles in " Arthur Britannicus." The sequel is even more dazzling. The characters and scenes come alive thanks to all the gripping detail and colorful descriptions. This book is undoubtedly the closest I would like to be in fighting the Romans! Great history of what it was like to live in that time.Thank you, Paul, for another great read.
