I really love how Mr. Henty shows the true reasons behind Cortez's conquest, and not the pack of lies that we usually hear in history. The thing that got my attention was the Henty made it clear that both sides had their good and bad intentions. The Mexicans wanted peace to reign but yet they exercised brutal human sacrifices to their gods. The Spanish wanted to spread the Gospel to the world but they were noted for their brutality in war. There are no reasons to search for good or bad guys, as the hero in this story is torn between the two sides. If you really want to read how history should be written, read this book.

It tells the story of a boy who is shipwrecked on a island where the people think he is a god. When Cortez comes to fight the people of the islands the boy is caught in the fray. This story is a great book full of excitment like in the middle of battles or running away in a boat. Even a point where the boy must escape from being sacrificed. This is a wonderful book which I encourage many to read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Better each time I read it By Hannah Full of historical and cultural information, while keeping mostly clean in light of its content, 'By Right of Conquest' gives a balanced picture of Cortez and the Aztecs. Though it deals with horrifically violent events, they are written non-descriptively. The characters are easy to relate to and the story is interesting. Roger doesn't always do what is right, but his aim is always to do righteously and he looks out for others more than for himself. Highly recommended for those who enjoy historical fiction or want to study this time period or culture.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Compelling Romance and Adventure By Susan M. Baganz Rachel James hit one out of the ballpark with her debut novel, The Forgotten Princess of Emetia. But she follows up with a unique and wonderful sequel in The Lost Princess Meigen.Princess Alena is a widow with a young son living at the mercy of her tyrannical father-in-law, the King of Meigen. Much to her chagrin she's been offered as the price of an alliance with another kingdom. She departs, leaving her son behind. Escorted by Ryce the Warrior and Sherwin, a handsome physician, she finds herself developing an affinity for the medical man. As they journey to Elmetia to meet the king and encounter various trials there, Alena finds herself in love with Sherwin even though she's duty bound to marry the king. Can she obey the order of her father-in-law and risk the dangers of such an action to follow her heart?Much like J.R.R. Tolkien, James takes the reader to another time and place with a medieval bent except that Ms. James takes us to real-time and place in the early 600's AD of Britannia. She accomplishes her magic without elves, wizards, dwarves or mystical creatures. With intense research to give her story authenticity she takes what little is known from that time and tells a fictional tale of romance and adventure to please any lover of the genre. Another wonderful story by a fabulous author.

A Duty Bound Princess By Victoria Pitts Caine Princess Alena, the widow of the prince who was once heir to the thrown of Meigen, must leave her young son and to journey to an arranged marriage in another land. Two of the knights of Angularem have come to escort her to King Niall, her betrothed. Her cruel father-in-law, Conall, who sent her into the marital contract, holds her young son captive. To distance her mind from her own tragedy, Alena finds herself enchanted by the use of herbs and potions of Sherwin one of her escorts and even more so, captivated by the man himself.Sherwin discovers his feelings for her as well, but she belongs to his King and he must not betray him. While Niall himself struggles with the situation of marrying someone he doesn’t love, his kingdom comes under siege. Sherwin and Alena are forced to fight for what they believe is right.Ms. James paints a beautiful story with her words transporting the reader back to 626 AD. The language used and the information she has undoubtable researched makes the story real and believable. This is the second book I’ve read by Ms. James and hopefully there will be more to follow.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable Read By DaisyJ Princess Alana is cruelly separated from her young son by her father-in-law and to divert her pain she becomes fascinated by the herbs ointments used in the Infirmary where she encounters Sherwin. Sherwin struggles over his feelings for Alana, after all she is betrothed to the King and he’s a mere Knight. Not only that but he’d also failed to prevent the death of King Niall’s previous wife. How could he look the king in the face or attend to Alana’s health when they had embraced? Alana believes denial is the best option and he reluctantly acquiesces. However, he agrees to take her on as his assistant to write up the medical notes as he does his rounds and finally Alana feels useful. Their relationship deepens but neither wish to dishonour the King, despite his reasons for marrying, especially when the kingdom comes under siege. Another enjoyable story from Ms James.

By Rachel L Hulse This is the first work I have read by this author and I loved it, already ordered another of her books to read. I loved the rich world she throws the reader into in the span of such a short story, and she does it so well. Its not overwhelming but its lush, a bit gritty, and totally leaves you wanting more! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy, or good stories with delightfully well written characters.

A great short story By Tungsten Hippo A believable and intriguing world, interesting and complex characters, and a fast-paced plot... there's a lot to like in this short story! It is a great advertisement for Hurley's longer books, but it also stands quite well on its own.

Murphy's Luck, by Benjamin Laskin

Review "Benjamin Laskin is a splendid storyteller with a flair for the dramatic and a talent for characterization."--James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief, THE MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW"What makes Murphy's Luck work best is the tenderness Laskin has for each one of his characters. You'll feel for Murphy because Laskin is so adept at characterization, but you'll be comforted by his antics, even when things are going wrong. There's also a good message about creating your own luck. Murphy might be called "Drummer the Bummer" but this book is far from it: a heartwarming, joyful and entertaining read."--Lysa Grant, SPR REVIEWS,  May 26, 2015

The author creates vivid character; even the ones you don't like are interesting. Poor Murphy seems to have no luck and wherever he goes, chaos follows. Can he live a normal life? Can he find a girlfriend? Can he walk down a street without someone having to an ambulance? I only wish there had been one more public transportation scene. An air plane would have been nice...if you like humor you'll like Murphy's Luck.

Just happened to stumble on this book and was thoroughly delighted by the twists and turns and laugh-out-loud fun that ensued. If you like puzzles, numbers, wordplay, slapstick, love stories, and more, you'll love Murphy's Luck! I was looking for a quick read and a departure from the spate of darkly suspenseful books that seem to line the shelves lately, and this little gem delivered. Mr. Laskin created a charming cast of characters with just enough depth to satisfy those with more philosophical inclinations. Will need to read this one again to unearth more of the multitude of clues, references, foreshadowing, and bits of wisdom buried inside. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Laskin's novels.

Murphy's Law Takes An Interesting Turn By The Kindle Book Review I am not sure that Benjamin Laskin meant for "Murphy's Luck" to be read with a whimsical heart and mind, but that is what I did. Given a plot that would be hard to place in the mystery/suspense genre, it is still a touch mysterious. As for Laskin's main character, in a word, he is unique.Have you ever felt that you created chaos everywhere you went and to everything you touch? I certainly have. Then there are those you feel create that same chaos every time they come near. Murphy encompasses both qualities and mourns the unhappiness he feels he spreads. A sensitive being, he feels the universe shift just before an incident. After some of Murphy's unfortunate accomplishments, he decides to relocate. There he meets Joy, Freya, Parker, Johnson and two talented, kind beings who Murphy happened to meet in jail. Murphy has the gift of shifting everyone's world. After meeting Joy, life seemed to started shifting toward happiness for not only Murphy but those he encountered. The most interesting character to me was Freya, a tarot reader who messed with the minds of two policemen who had more than a little foresight. We also meet The Hobby Guy, but at what point do we realize that?Murphy's Luck is a fun, interesting book as long as you are not looking to be grumpy-faced all day. I could use a little of his luck myself.Carol PinerKindle Book Review"The Kindle Book Review received a free copy of this book for an independent, fair, and honest review. It is the madness of men that draws both Marshal Boone Crowe and Deputy Rud Lacrosse onto the separate trails of two killers. A vicious bounty hunter has seized an innocent man and it is Crowe who is in a desperate chase across Wyoming to set the captive free before harm comes to him. But a wintery blizzard buries his hopes under a barren landscape of snow, images of war, and the haunting faces of despairing women. Lacrosse, tracking a wounded murderer, finds himself in a deeper battle within himself, a struggle against sudden violence, and the truth of who he really is, all the while bridled with a confused passion for a beautiful but mysterious girl. Track of the Wolf pits Crowe against Gaylord Wolfson, a man wrestling with demons of his own and using the Wyoming Territory as his punishing ground. In the midst of a devastating winter storm, the marshal is drawn closer to the world of Indian lore and to the strength of its power and helped in his survival by the miracle of a ghost horse.

Track of the Wolf (Marshal Boone Crowe Book 4), by Buck Edwards

About the Author Buck Edwards finds kinship with the windblown tumbleweeds of America’s prairies and wide open spaces. A traveling man, Ed- wards, when not rooted between the pages of a good book, can be found tramping the historical sites across the country, from Fort Ticonderoga and Plimoth Plantation, to Gettysburg, Fort Sumter, and the Alamo. His western writing-roots came from a youthful love for the books of Zane Grey, Owen Wister, Alan Lemay, and Conrad Richter. Raised around horses and cattle, Edwards enjoys studying the landscape surrounding his prairie home in eastern Washington, as well as the regions where his books take place—Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, and Montana. When asked if Marshal Boone Crowe is his alter ego, Edwards refers them to writer Norman Mailer, who once explained that writers must be able to create characters that are stronger than they are, braver than they are, and perhaps even handsomer than they are. Edwards says that Marshal Boone Crowe is all of these things. The Marshal Boone Crowe series consists of Dead Woman Creek; Showdown in the Bear Grass; Judgment at Rattlesnake Wash; and Track of the Wolf. A fifth addition to these westerns, The Widow Makers, is due out later in 2015. They are all available through Amazon in paperback, or on Kindle, and also on Barnes and Noble’s NOOK.

I have one comment I'd like to forward to the author: forget the minority accents. He's trying for Mexican but it's coming out French. Basically these are comfortable reads with Marshal Boone Crowe doing his Wild West best. Buck Edwards shows his strengths when he integrates his knowledge of Indian beliefs and lore. He does this well in this novel. He also creates a college educated deputy who is believable. All in all who could complain? It's a Western!!!!!!This novel shows a huge advance in the authors attention to detail and character observation. Book 5 could be one of the best. I look forward to it's arrival.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. 5 Making History Real, Touchable and Seriously Swoony Stars By AddictedReader 5 Making History Real, Touchable and Seriously Swoony StarsAs I sit here thinking about what I have just read...I applaud April White for her amazing ability to take history... make it accessible, full of intrigue and guile.... and use an edgy yet coming of age gal as our leader through it all. She has taken all the current times flavor; mixed it with deeply thought-provoking questions of the ages and blended her own brand of magic to capture our attention from the first page to the end.Her first book, Marking Time, set a stage of using time travel... a group of people who had specific powers which their descendants continued through generations. She called them the Immortal Descendants. Now I am not the talented Ms. White, so I will direct you to please read the blurbHowever, what I can and will tell you is how fantastic this second book in the series was.It is one thing to start a series and lay out the feel, characters, complete a full arc of a story and then leave the readers wanting for more...with seeds planted as to how another additional part could go. Sometimes the first books are good... but you get the feeling the writer has all these boxes they have to tick...so the current story gets lost... there is too heavy a hand pointing to the proposed secondary character to have their own book... it can be like the author has a neon sign pointing- saying "over here" flashing every time they have this character do anything. But Ms. White wasn't that type of author in the first book and so when this second part of the series happened... I was dancing for joy to see it released. What was so amazing about the style and way of writing was as I read the first couple of pages... every memory, every emotion I felt while reading the first.... came flooding back to me. The affection I held for Saria and her gutsy somewhat unpolished way of approaching things came back to me. My remembrance of the sweet new young love she had for Archer tingled in my mind and all of the complexity of the whole Traits and Powers hit full on as I dug into the book. It is very special when a reader can just fall right back into the correct mind to accept all the fantasy and time travel as if it was an everyday experience. I was able to be in the moment with Saria; I was off and running. This second book looks at the time of Elizabeth Tudor... with all of the politics, family upheaval and imprisonment and marries it against the politics, family upheaval and possible imprisonment of the Immortals. It was so smart.... the intrigue... the discoveries...and the times and how they lived.... all of it sucked you in and you wanted to know more. The main characters also focused on real life challenges; acceptance of love, willingness to truly be honest with others and forgiveness. Also the main continuing question was... are we masters of our own fate... do we have choices in our lives and what is moral...How do we live a good just life- accepting all for who they are as people and not segregate our love... be open to just love unconditionally. All of the main characters in these books are strong... it doesn't matter what century or class or sex... the gals are steel... the men are clear and good-hearted. I loved it all.So if you want to get lost in a book which mixes real life events with a story of creativity and guile... Then please...carve out sometime for something which will capture your mind as well as your heart. The great news is you can read each one and not have that cliffy hangover. Each book ends with a true understanding and conclusion. Ms. White... I am ready to go where you take me next....A gifted copy was provided by author for an honest review.

Saira is once again being hunted by Mongers who are after all the mixed bloods. With the help of Archer and her friends Saira is able to figure out what Bishop Wilder is doing. When Saira wakes from a dream that Archer is seeing they know that Ringo will be at the hands of the bishop at some point in the future even if it was in the past. When they team up with a few of her friends to steal the genealogy from the mongers they realize only a thief will be able to. So Saira jumps back in time to get Ringo knowing he would be up to helping them with the book. After saving the book they turn their attention to the vision that they had of Bishop Wilder with Ringo back during 1554. With the help of Ringo the trio head back in time to when Elizabeth Tudor was being held by her sister. The plan is to stop Bishop Wilder before he can break the time and keep Ringo away from him but when they arrive things are more dire than they expected. Elizabeth has accepted the fact that she is going to die being that she’s a seer who’s seen her own death. Saira will have to save Elizabeth from the chopping block and stop Bishop Wilder before it’s too late and things can’t be fixed.Saira is one of my favorite characters she may have a few flaws but no one is perfect. I love that even when in the 1500’s she’s still wears her combat boots and jeans under her dresses so if she needed to run she would be ready. I also love that she’s very much in love with Archer he’s just the perfect guy who happens to fit the prophecy . I really liked that we had a chance to see more of Ringo he was one of my favorite from the prior book. I also liked seeing more of the other Immortal Descendants.Tempting Fate is the second book in The Immortal Descendants and continues off not long after the end of the first. Tempting Fate had big shoes to fill after how much I loved the first book and it doesn't disappoint it might even be better. The concept of time travel but with an exciting new twist that incorporates real events from the past. A fast paced action packed novel loaded with mystery, suspense and even romance. Tempting fate captured my heart and imagination right from the start it was impossible to put down till the very end. I loved how the author used Elizabeth’s story putting her own unique spin and creating a new obsession in the Tudor Era. The author has created a beautifully written story that flows from start to finish it’s easy to lose all track of time. I like that the novel is also clean aside from a little blood so teens as well as adults will enjoy it. I think I found my favorite book of 2014. I can’t wait for the next novel and to see what we have in store for us next. I loved Tempting Fate so much!!!

Anderson The only story with poop, that isn't poop. The Tudors, as a history subject, have never failed to completely fascinate me. There are so many things left unknown- outside of educated guesstimations- that never fail to tickle my interest. And obviously Ms. White feels the same.In a story where there are so many twists, turns, rewinds, and backflips, there are so many places, innumerable details that could have been dropped, left out, left behind, or completely ignored. I just finished a reading marathon on this book, twice over, and have not found one grammatical error, misspelt word, or forgotten detail. It's flawless. It's amazing. And I desperately want someone to build a time machine so I may meet Queen Elizabeth, also. This book has made me profoundly jealous of Ms. White's imagination, and the character, Saira's life. The only moment in this story I stopped and got incredibly grossed out (not including the swim Saira took in the 16th century Cesspool, or the foretold medieval swirly poor Ringo experiences) was after Saira swims in the foulest river of all time, and **!!BEFORE!!** scrubbing down with icy London well water, eats a meat pie. I literally had to set my laptop away from me as I gagged thinking about the raw sewage Saira is covered in, while **EATING** with her bare hands, **BEFORE** she washes. There was plenty of attention to the medical perspective of time travel throughout this story, and poultices, shots, and proper wound dressing was appropriately described wherever necessary. But Saira, dear Saira, WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU EAT!!!Other than that one moment of germophobia from me, as a reader, I absolutely loved this book and will definitely recommend it to everyone.

Veal Appearing anonymously as "By the Author of Nina Balatka", "Linda Tressel" was the second and last installment in Anthony Trollope's attempt to establish an alternative literary persona that could deviate from the Trollopian staples (not that the deviation was very startling; maidens urged to marry men whom they don't love are not exactly an unknown subject to our author).Like the earlier book, "Linda" takes place in a foreign city that the author had recently visited, in this case Nuremberg, and deals with the effect of religious bigotry on love and marriage. This time, instead of violently opposing a union, the bigoted aunt is trying to promote one, and the heroine struggles to escape into either spinsterhood or the arms of a more acceptable lover than the middle-aged boor who has been picked out for her.The personae of "Linda Tressel" - all odd ducks except for Linda herself - belong to comedy, and a work in that vein might have succeeded. Trollope chose, however, to write a tale that becomes progressively grimmer, eventually toppling the lightweight characters. The book was not a total failure. It drew praise from Henry James (who guessed the author's identity from stylistic clues) and has both lively and pathetic moments. On the whole, though, one does not, after putting it down, feel deep regret that the "alternative Trollope" had no further literary career.

I could see where this book might have appealed to a Victorian audience; as a modern reader, I found it tough going, though not as much so as much "Alice Dugdale" - a real yawner. The supporting characters carry the story pretty much, but I could've used a bit more mouth-foaming zealotry from the aunt to jazz it up even more.
