In this evocative tale of suspense from CWA Gold Dagger winner Peter Dickinson, a British diplomat's wife in Nigeria inadvertently precipitates a senseless tragedy, and six decades later, her son becomes caught up in a maelstrom of violent political corruption Filmmaker Nigel Jackland has come to northern Nigeria to work on a new project: a documentary based on the personal diary entries of his mother. Sixty years have passed since Betty Jackland first accompanied her husband, Ted, to this colonial African backwater, resolving to be a perfect helpmate and wife to Britain's district officer in the emirate of Kiti. But Betty's fascination with the local Kitawa tribe, innate sense of justice, and irrepressibly independent spirit mean she could never turn a blind eye to the suffering of oppressed women-particularly the abused wives of the ruling emir. She never imagined that her strong words and actions could have violent consequences in the shadow of Tefuga Hill-or that the echoes of the tragedy would resound dangerously in the life of her own son many years on. Linking two stories separated by more than half a century and relating them in alternating chapters, Tefuga is an enthralling, evocative, and suspenseful tale of corruption, imperialism, race, and murder. A master of both style and substance, Dickinson brilliantly re-creates times and places in stunning detail, transporting readers to an Africa so remarkably realistic they can almost feel the equatorial winds on their faces.

Tefuga: A Novel of Suspense, by Peter Dickinson

From Publishers Weekly Sixty years after his mother, Betty Jackland, came from England to tribal, backwater, colonial Nigeria to marry his district-officer father, Ted arrives to make a documentary film based on her diary. Its pages recreate that time in detailthe life of an isolated woman in the overwhelmingly man's world of the British Empire; the ways of the resident Kitawa and Hausa people; the ambiguities of "indirect rule"; Betty's identification with native servants (including a houseboy who later rises to the rank of spiritual leader). Hovering over the shadowy events of the past and over a present steeped in corruption and violence is a mysterious shaping event toward which the action moves. In 1921, in the shadow of Tefuga hill, the new emir selected by the British is killed by the Kitawa women. Given its climactic significance, this act is strangely undramatizedoccurs, in fact, offstage. While prolific writer Dickinson (The House Party delivers a smoothly phrased, interesting narrative, it is somewhat marred by a sense of anticlimax and a profusion of pedestrian detail. Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “[An] amusing and elegantly structured tour de force.” —The New York Times   “Comparisons with Isak Dinesen are inevitable and Tefuga does not suffer by such comparisons.” —Houston Chronicle   “For sheer storytelling power, Tefuga is wonderful. The characters are alive, the setting dazzles, and the blazing Africa sun almost brings a rash to the back of your neck.” —The Washington Book World   “Stunning . . . [Dickinson’s] descriptions are extraordinarily vivid . . . and his climax is obliquely told yet an unforgettable moment of horror.” —Time   “Peter Dickinson’s technique is dazzling, and he writes as though there were witchdoctors present at his christening.” —The Guardian   “The works of Peter Dickinson are like caviar—an acquired taste that can easily become an addiction.” —Time

This is not particularly a mystery, though Dickinson is a talented mystery writer and a murder occurs. This is a beautifully drawn and utterly convincing portrait of life in colonial Africa and in the conflicts and misunderstandings that plague well-meaning people dealing with cultures outside their own. I spent many years in post-colonial Africa and based on my experiences, TERFUGA is a masterpiece and a haunting work of literature about the colonial situation. It is pertinent that Dickinson grew up in colonial Africa and knows whereof he speaks.

Narrative necessity and the entire flavor of the story requires the "key event" be out the main narrative flow.Additional enjoyment for those who like Masterpiece Theatre type programs will be pleased that one of the plot strands has the characters' filming one. Additional humor.

Dickinson deftly Inserts the reader into the complex, convoluted and short-sighted (indirect) British rule in sub-Saharan Africa. That short-sighted (indirect) rule parallels the flaws of the U.S. and others ineptly dealing with the tribal antipathies of the Middle East. Read, be wowed by its intensity and be sad.for the waste of humanity in war. Another winner from a writer of global ethics.

The English alphabetical order is used throughout to make it easier for those who struggle with the order of the traditional dictionary. A considerable vocabulary is included which provides most of the words used in secondary school examinations. Many tables are supplied for nouns and verbs etc. All the information for each topic is gathered together so that one does'nt have to endlessly scour through the book. However By Paul Phillips As a reasonably new student of Sanskrit, I have been using an earlier edition of this book occasionally and have found it most useful. However, I have found this version to be excellently presented, clear and very easy to work with. It is also a particularly supportive reference for the Sanskrit student when used as a companion volume to the Sanskrit Dictionary by the same author. I have no hesitation in recommending both books to students of Sanskrit, at any level.

I am no one. I pass from dark into dark. I hunt a track gone cold as stone. For five thousand Earthyears, the planet called Nevermore has been empty. Its cities are deserted, with every trace of their inhabitants erased. Only a handful of nomadic tribes remain, none of whom remember the ones who went before. An expedition from Earth has been excavating one of the planet’s many ruins, and attempting without success to find the cause of its people’s disappearance. Now the expedition is in trouble, its funding cut; unless it makes a major discovery, and soon, it will be shut down. Then the United Planets will invade Nevermore and strip it of its resources, and destroy its ancient and enigmatic treasures. Aisha, the daughter of the chief archaeologists, tries to save the expedition by opening a sealed tomb or treasury—and manages instead to destroy it. But one treasure survives, which may be the key to the planet’s mystery. That treasure is alive, and deeply dangerous: a long-forgotten king and conqueror, sentenced to be preserved in stasis centuries before his world was abandoned. Khalida is a Military Intelligence officer with a quarter-million deaths on her conscience. She has retreated to the near-solitude of Nevermore to try to come to terms with what she has done, but her past will not let her go. The war she thought she had ended still rages, and is about to destroy one planet and spread chaos through a hundred more. Her superiors force her back into service, and dispatch her to a world that may also offer a clue to the mystery of Nevermore. With the alien king, the sentient starship he liberates from an unholy alliance of Military Intelligence and the Interstellar Institute for Psychic Research, and a crew of scientists, explorers, and renegades, Aisha and Khalida set off on a journey to the end of the universe and beyond. What they find will change not only the future of Nevermore, but that of all the United Planets. “Evil government agencies, powerful psionics, tense diplomacy, ancient mysteries, the multiverse, and an intelligent starship…there’s no slowing the momentum of the high-stakes adventure. Space opera fans will enjoy this lively story and its homages to the pulp SF era.” –Publishers Weekly

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Excellent--intelligent and exciting; thoroughly enjoyed it. By Duodentes I bought this book through a Kickstarter campaign because I'm predisposed to like Judith Tarr's work. I was not disappointed.Forgotten Suns is a hybrid science fiction/fantasy (fantasy only if you consider faster-than-light space travel, reincarnation (implied), and highly developed psi in humans in the far future to be scientific impossibilities). Boiled down, Forgotten Suns is a space adventure (with superhero). It features two point-of-view characters, a 13-year-old girl (prodigy) who embarks on the adventure to save the family business (an archaeological dig on a mysterious planet, long-since abandoned by most of its humanoid inhabitants, with a few left behind as caretaker/guardians). The other POV character is the girl's aunt, an emotionally scarred veteran of a psionic spy agency who is ordered to return to the scene of the events that scarred her to finish the job. This is essentially a macguffin since it serves to get niece and aunt off the planet in the company of a mysterious stranger who recently turned up.It's the stranger's imperatives that drive the plot. The stranger turns out to be a psionically advanced native of the planet who wants to find out why it was abandoned and where the people went. The psionic spy agency and some of its minions are, of course, the villains of the piece. Not to mention the [well, I can't mention it because spoilers, but superheroism is required to deal with it].The three main characters do grow and learn and change, but the story is about 60 percent adventure (traveling about, solving the mystery, and one-upping/eliminating villains) to 40 percent character growth, well-blended.There's also a nice space beast to ride around in.In the opening stages of the story, if you're familiar with Tarr's earlier work, you'll experience a "whoa!" moment when you suddently recognize one of the characters. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say that it's not too long before you'll realize that Forgotten Suns is a continuation. That said, it's an independent story, and it's entirely unnecessary to have read any of the related novels. I recommend that you do anyway. It's also a continuation--to some extent--of some of the ideas introduced in Living in Threes, specifically the concept of a "worldsweb," an extrapolation of the World Wide Web that involves brain implants and/or psi.One of the things I like about Judith Tarr's work is that she respects the reader's intelligence and doesn't describe every detail of the novel's world or explain every piece of technology or exactly how things work or why things happen. She gives the needed information but allows the reader to fill things in, to make the leaps of imagination. If you want every i dotted and every t crossed, every equation solved with accompanying engineering drawings, this isn't the book for you. The advantage is that the book doesn't go on for 500 pages more than necessary to tell the story. I've discovered in fact that it's longer than it seemed while I was reading it (this is good)--about 350 hardcover pages. And though the novel is open ended, it's self-contained. You may want to know what happens next, but you won't be crushed if there's no sequel. Though it would be nice, pretty please. This is not a love story. There are some sketchy romantic relationships (including same sex), but they aren't the focus of the novel. More time is spent on interactions with the nice space beast and on the training of horse-like antelopes and, especially, on friendships and family obligations and on cooperation among several people accustomed to going it alone and doing things their own way. Synergy.

A Great Science Fiction Adventure By Christine Meads I won this book on LibraryThing and I thoroughly enjoyed it.It is a science fiction/fantasy space adventure with a hero and a young girl. Some of the people on Nevermore are psi, and the Military Intelligence comes to take those children who have psi. Aisha is one, and one day she tries to help her parents who are part of an archeological team, and blows open a hill. Out of that hill comes a man--she has awakened someone that has been sleeping for over 6000 years. She calls him Rama. With her help, and the help of her aunt, Khalida, Rama tracks down what's left of his people. This book is full of adventure, of jumping between universes (if there are more than ours), and the struggle of Aisha to grow up and mature. It deals with love, friendships, and promises kept.I would recommend this book to those interested in space travel and adventure.

What an excellent continuation of the 'adventures' of Mike Chance, the man who surely has to be the toughest conman in today's noir fiction. My thanks to the author for sharing his talent and incredible writing. The story gets underway at full throttle and never lets up until the last word. And the words in Mr. Infante's writing are razor sharp, because his sentences are devoid of any unnecessary stuff.Characterizations, settings and pure atmosphere are impeccable, and there isn't one wasted word in it.Late 1930's Los Angeles as well as its surrounding areas are the canvas on which the incredibly hard-boiled story unfolds, ...and to boot, there is this wonderful sense of insight into psyche and motivations, that triggered a grim chuckle here and there on my side. The author displays an absolutely unique creative brilliance, with no room given to any fake moral glossing over when things and situations in the plot get seriously out-of-hand for the protagonists.I should also like to say that in my opinion Mr. Infante's pure narrative sets a new standard for crime fiction and raises the bar high indeed. He's created a timeless, period hard-boiled classic that is in a league completely of its own, ..and I'm sure looking forward to be in on what fate has next in store for Mike Chance.

Wedge The second book of Mike Chance's criminal exploits is more fun than the already entertaining False Ransom. Pushing Chance even more into the realm of a psychotic killer who also happens to be an ace grifter, this is a violent, funny, and twisty bit of pulp nastiness that left me waiting for the next installment. If you like your crime novels fast, grisly, and packed with action, Fixed Fight more than fits the bill.

“A very many trickster moons ago,” said Tony’s grandfather, “and very, very far away... way past where our real world ends and your imagination begins, things were different than here. There was a proud kingdom that had fallen on darker days.” “The kingdom was known as Iisen, or the Iisendom as it was sometimes called. It was a prosperous and peaceful kingdom, but for years, a cloud had been forming over the land and was worrying the people that lived there.” “People were disappearing... not many, but when they did, it made the people afraid. There were rumors, of course. Rumors of gypsies and monsters in the woods, but no one seemed to know what was happening for sure. And the people of Iisen, the merchants and hostlers and iron mongers and farmers, couldn’t very well hide in their homes and farmhouses. They still had to earn a living. All they could do was hope they weren’t the next to vanish one day.” “But the tale doesn’t really start with that. The tale starts with a thief. A thief who had just been caught and was about to be in very deep trouble...”

It took me a while to get into it, with all the strange names and all, but when I finally immersed myself into the story of The Gully Snipe, I couldn't put it down, which meant my staying up through the night to finish the book. It is a fantasy based book, quite unusual from what JF Smith would normally write but not less fascinating. I will not go into the blurb of the story, but I can truthfully say that plot takes you to another world and it is an adventure not to be missed. I loved All the characters, both good and bad, they only made the book more exciting. Truthfully, not all tales end the way we want( Like the outcome of Bayle looking for his father Ollon) but that's life. I would recommend this book and say to readers out there, that your patience at the beginning will truly be rewarded with fantastic story.4.5 stars

It was an outstanding, heartfelt (I do not have enough adjectives to desribe this ) book. I read daily probably I go through 2 or 3 books a week may be more. Latakia still remains 1 of my all-time favorite books. So when I saw this new book by JF Smith. I had to give it a go. I am not big on fantasy books. and this book was hard to get into. It is not a romance. but if you can persevere past the first 10% Its a great read. Truly amazing and its not always about the HEA.This book is a great story period. If you are looking for a fantasy world with romance The Lightning-Struck Heart is a good book. I cant wait to see where book 2 goes in this fantasy series

Gully Snipe was fun to read as well, but was also a great -- possibly masterful -- tale. The plot had adventure, and was very well crafted and engaging. The protagonist, who had a little bit of Jack Sparrow in him, had charm, impressive depth of emotion and character, and good character evolution. When I was reading, I was simply enjoying the story and characters. When I was done, I realized there were elements of true literature, but with a completely modern, natural and approachable style. Although the title says "Book 1," Gully Snipe is a complete story. I eagerly look forward to the next book featuring these characters.
