If you simply want to read a fabulous story, this is it. Aspiring writers, if you want to see how to write a book, this is the one. The plot is superb, the characters believable, the historical events well-researched, and the pages demand that you turn them as fast as you can. Everything from bad boy rock stars to suffragettes!But what I found to be the most interesting thing was the ability of the author to find a vehicle in which she can bring in historical events that affect the contemporary characters. It simply is one of the best books I've ever read. I wish I could give it six stars. Trust me, it's that good. Recommend it? To everyone!!! Thank you Ms. Mallery for writing such a wonderful book.

By KathyFromFranklin I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful time period book – and it’s an especially great book for book clubs!I was tasked with picking a book for our book club – and I began a search to find a time period fiction book that had very good reviews. I found it with Sarah Mallery’s book ‘ Unexpected Gifts’, and that’s exactly what the books was full of – gifts! It is a great story telling about many generations of a family that was an American (and even international) history trip as well. I enjoyed how the book switched point of views between the various characters. What a treasure trove of rich family history Sonia found in her parents attic. What’s especially great about the book is that it lent itself so well to book club conversation. It made all of us want to journal a book to our own children! Our book club was especially lucky in that we had the privilege of having Sarah Mallery join us (via phone from CA to our group in MA) – that was my ‘unexpected gift’ to our book club! We SO enjoyed and appreciated her taking the time to talk to us. What a special night that was!

I loved all the period details -specific language along with gadgets, decor, andclothes. Best of all was the good, old fashionedmurder mystery and the final scene during which all thesuspects are there and the murderer is revealed. Alice issuch a woman of her time. I really liked herrelationships with the other characters. All in all, areally fun read.

A Well Crafted Murder Mystery and totally different from her other books By Amazon Customer Very engaging story-line; Love the descriptions of old Long Beach and references to the 1920's/1930's pop culture. Suspenseful; with enough descriptions of the characters for you to picture them in your mind. The Admiral and his gang are sinister, but in the background; and the two primary characters come out of a film noir of the 1950's. Actually, might make an interesting movie!!!! Hope to see more adventures with these characters.

You can't tell me you don't want to know the story behind this Thoroughbred racehorse in a bar!I was as enchanted with the characters as I was engrossed in the unfolding murder mystery. The investigation had plenty of twists and turns, resulting in a tough moral dilemma for Bert and Grady. If ever there was a "feel good murder mystery", then this is it! By Scott While I typically gravitate toward the NY Best Seller section when I purchase books the Lazy Day Books Review was what made me take a chance on this murder mystery. Some books take a while to get into or get my interest at all, but this one reeled me in from the beginning. This book reminds me a lot of that movie. Bert Thatcher is the Chief and Grady Colston is the detective and they have to work together to solve the murder. The thing is these two can actually get along. Mr. Burge has provided us with a highly complicated plot. Bert and Grady are really interesting characters that develop and become more interesting as the story goes on. “Bryant’s Gap” is loaded with twists and turns that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. The author made the characters come alive and I was sorry have to part with them. I would like to have found out about their life after the war. I would like to thank the author for a great step back in time.

Captivating By saltgirl8 I downloaded the sample before purchasing the book, and never even finished reading it all, instead, went straight back to Amazon and bought the entire book. Lindsay had me captured from the first page. Her attention to detail brings you completely into the story, allowing you the opportunity to share all of the wide range of emotions that Gallagher is faced with as she forges ahead to fulfill her goal, following any path she must take to get there. Although I am an avid fan of Civil War history, this book isn't just for history buffs - rather, it is a story of determination, love, laughter and heartache, a must read for everyone.

Jones I don't usually like period pieces and I have never been fond of Civil War history, but the author is my younger cousin so I thought I would give the book a try. I got the sample first to see if it could hold my interest and I purchased the book as soon as I finished the sample. The characters are great and the plot is fast moving. Even though it concerns the Civil War there were humorous parts along with the tragic one. I will recommend this book to my frends

Hugo Lopes Tavares

Hugo Lopes Tavares is a software developer from Brazil who currently works as a platform engineer at Yipit, a technology company focused on data aggregation and analysis. Prior to his work in the United States, Hugo worked on live streaming video development for Globo.com, the Internet branch of Grupo Globo, which is the largest media conglomerate in Latin America. Having been involved in open source software, he has made a significant impact in this field. He was a main contributor to pip (the Python package installer), wrote improvements to CPython and the Python standard library, coauthored Splinter (a web-testing tool), and contributed to many well-known projects. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The Redis book I have been waiting for, includes Node.js By Jim Fathman This is the Redis book I have been waiting for. It introduces fundamental operations using the Redis command line interface, and then shows useful examples of the same operations using Node.js. The combination of Node.js and Redis is a popular mix, so the approach in this book should appeal to a large audience of server side developers.The writing quality and editing is uncommonly good in this book. I am a fan of PACKT books which are frequently first to market for new technologies, but they are sometimes rushed and written by amateurs. Not so here. The authors and reviewers are legit, have solid technical chops, and it shows.I buy a lot of technical books from Amazon, read them, and sell them back to clear shelf space. I keep a few of the better books. This book is a keeper. I hope the authors will return with more excellent writing about other parts of the Node.js ecosystem.

Ketchman I didn't know much about Redis besides it being an in-memory storage option similar to memcached, but after reading through this book I've gotten a really good understanding of how Redis works and how to use it. I've read a lot of technical books, some being excellent and others being difficult to read, and this one gets points for not just the ease of reading, but the technical detail that it goes into.The book starts off basic, with each chapter getting more and more detailed. I liked that it spent some time talking about the data structures used in redis. Although this detail might not be necessary for advanced users, it's a good refresher and isn't overly verbose. Another thing I appreciated a lot were the many examples. Throughout the book you get a chance to actually start using redis using Node.JS, which makes following along easier. The author doesn't take for granted that some people might not know JavaScript though, but for people who do, there aren't too many pages wasted for the basics. Basically, it has a good balance between moving the learning along while still helping those who might be new to all of this.I have yet to actually develop my own production ready application using redis but after finishing the book I'm pretty confident that I know enough to do it. I recommend this book for anyone wanting a quick way to learn about redis. The ease of reading makes it so you can finish the book relatively quickly, or spend extra time with the many examples if you want a more hands-on read through.

I do have a good experience working with Redis, and was still able to profit from this book. The book goes from the very basic (installing Redis and running the first command with redis-cli) to more advanced features and techniques (using Redis as a time-series database or the inner workings of Redis Cluster and Sentinel), always with a good coverage of real-world examples.I also liked the way the authors presented the problems related to replication and sharding and then presented the official tools for that, giving a good notion on how the actual history happened, as Redis wasn't designed in the first place with replication and sharding in mind. The authors do show to have large experience in the topic, and the book is also very well written. Definitely a good book to have in the collection.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Deserving Rating By Paul Mullen Having read all five books of the Atlantia series, Dean Crawford is now on my list of favorite authors. The series portrays an excellent look into the distant future. The storyline was excellent and each book was sort of like the Saturday night serial movies I grew up with. I do not normally give five stars but this series and author deserves such a rating. For the fans of sci-fi genre, you will enjoy this series.

It says, "Basic knowledge of Gradle or any other build tool is essential." What this seems to mean is that this book is not for Gradle beginners. It isn't. Much of the time, it is very much a hand-holding guide, but then it will suddenly make glancing references to topic that have not even been hinted at by the book.The trouble is that there doesn't seem to be any kind of learning resource anywhere for the beginner. Gradle's online documentation is even worse (much worse) than this book at suddenly launching into advanced side topics.There is good material in this book; I say that as someone who is still pretty new to Gradle. I wonder if my perception will change after I become more of an expert. In that case, maybe the content will seem too basic. For now, I'm learning things, but I still have frequent cases when I wonder what the heck the book is talking about. So I have to put those topics aside and assume I'll learn about them later. This is not the most pleasant or effective way to learn something.

I bought this book partly as a reference and partly as way to learn the what I don't know about Gradle. I have found this book to be a very good reference and I definitely appreciated the background information on Groovy. I will be recommending that we purchase this book for our team's library.

The book also talks about migrating and integrating strategies which is highly useful. You can also learn to make simple android apps which you can test using Gradle. Overall this book is very good if you want to learn Gradle entirely. Must Read.
