‘A rapid-fire thriller’ The New York Times England. 1069 A.D. In the years following the Norman conquest, the English are left seething under the yoke of foreign rule. All hope seems lost — until Hereward Leofricsson returns to reclaim his birthright, after earning the nickname ‘Hereward the Wake’ for his success fighting in the East. His fierce resolve, military cunning and gallant manner soon attract a dogged band of English freedom fighters, who are determined to recover their country or die in the attempt. But Hereward finds himself torn between his bitter hatred of the Norman conquerors and his love for Althya, a Norman noblewoman who proves herself to be just as resourceful, loyal and strong as he is. Hereward’s love for Althya also earns him a very dangerous enemy in the form of the sadistic Guy de Lussac, who is determined to marry Althya to settle an old score with her father. The Last Englishman is a stirring tale of bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and a compelling blend of history and legend, brimming with ancient magic as well as rigorous historical detail.

Adventure, bravery, romance and was likely played out hundreds of times in real life. I first read this book back in the '70's; it was a borrowed and battered paperback. Some years back I found a very nice hardcover copy I will never part with.

It is very well written and a grippingly good story about a legendary hero, almost like a tale told before a fire at night where one's imagination fills out the pictures. I highly recommend it.

No Irish Need Apply is a historical portrait of New York City's Hell's Kitchen chronicling the friendship and struggles of Johnny O'Hara and his friend Red, children of immigrants who escaped Ireland's Great Hunger. Orphaned at an early age, the boys struggle to survive amidst the poverty and anti-Irish Catholic prejudice of the day. As adults, Johnny and Red join an all-immigrant volunteer fire company that is despised by surrounding fire companies manned by American-born men. Unwittingly, the immigrants and the Americans, alike, are the victims of greedy elites who thrive on keeping them divided, resulting in many pitched battles on the streets and at fires. In No Irish Need Apply, Finucane captures the grit of the Irish immigrants and their will to survive and thrive, against a backdrop exploring New York's transition from a volunteer fire department to a professional fire department. No Irish Need Apply is also an inspirational love story with an unusual twist revealing the blood, sweat and passions of the Irish immigrants who helped build New York City.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Anya must mature to cope with changing times By Uvi Poznansky I am delighted to discover the next volume in the Anya Series, as I fell in love with the character in Volume I, which gave me a unique insight into Russian life during one of the most drastic political, economic, and social upheavals: the disintegration and ultimately the collapse of the Soviet Union. Set against this tubulent background, rife with confusion about Russia’s future, here is the quiet, lovely voice of Anya, as she goes through her coming of age. In Struggling to Survive, Anya is learning to cope as a mother facing many challenges. The writing fleshes out the Russian landscape, and it is dynamic from the start. The book opens with a haunting nightmare of disaster, as she frets what may happen to her husband: “As she reached for Yuri, the submarine behind him exploded into a gigantic fireball, quickly ungluing Yuri in a cloud of black smoke and red fire.” When her premonition comes true, we watch her coping with grief. “He promised to take care of her and protect her. Now, everything was different, as Anya had to take care of and protect her young child.”Her determination to survive is fascinating as we watch her learning to change with the time and maturing. No longer a child, she moves from the Russia to Poland and China, deals with challenging new situations as this story is expanded in scope and becomes a fast pace thriller, to the point that longing for peace is expressed with a little wink: “You can spend time with Larisa and me if you don’t mind our slow pace.”Five stars.

Romance and survival while a country goes through adolescence By kwadzana Author Julia Gousseva has that rare gift of storytelling that brings the reader into the story, cleverly weaving the historical and cultural background into the story line while making the reader feel for the characters. In Struggling to Survive we experience life in the new, modern Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Change happened too quickly. For some, life was better but for others, it was difficult to survive. The government was no longer there to take care of people. This kind of “survival of the fittest” environment breeds crime and corruption and Anya and her companions fall prey to desperate people trying to survive.Anya’s character becomes real in this wonderful story. You can feel her suppressed sadness and you feel that deep down inside, even though she grieves for her late husband Yuri, she still has feelings for her first love Victor. But Victor is long gone; existing only in Anya’s memory. Who knows if she will ever even see him again? There are exciting twists and turns and surprises as the story unfolds but at the heart of the story is a long lost romance. We’ve all wondered, “what could have been” at some point in our lives. Few of us ever get that second chance. For Anya, it may be possible but she will have to decide if forgiveness and love are more powerful than the sadness and heartache that has become her passenger. As you read and feel and hope for Anya’s future to be bright and happy again, the book becomes a page turner. We’ve come to care about Anya and we wish for her happiness and we want to see how things turn out for her and Larisa.Struggling to Survive is highly recommended. I loved the wonderful, uplifting ending.

I was very tired after a long day, but I had to keep reading until I felt Anya was in a safe place. Because I like her, and because I wanted to know what happened to her. I finished the book the next day. Same reasons. "Struggling to Survive" is such a great story, and it is wonderfully written by Julia Gousseva. It is part two in what I hope will be a long series of "Anya" books. Like part one, this story takes place primarily in Russia, immediately following the breakup of the Soviet Union. A difficult time for many Russians, I imagine, and a very interesting setting for a story. I'm not going to spoil anything for you, but I will tell you that in this one, Anya visits all sorts of exotic places, and meets loads of interesting people along the way. The story telling and writing are both top notch. You're wondering about the title of my review, right? Yeah, I have a favorite sweater. I wear it all the time because I like the way it feels. And much like slipping into that sweater, it always feels comforting to me escaping into a good book. Like this one. I highly recommend it!

From the Author Author's Note       Most of the main characters in this novella are based on biblical history. The fictional character "Archael" is inspired by Genesis 3: 24; after the ostracism of the first parents out of Eden, cherubs were posted at the East entrance, and in their possession a flaming blade of a sword "to guard the way to the tree of life." Whether more than two cherubs were stationed there is not stated...

An Outstanding Family Saga that Spans Nearly a Millennia By Marcha Fox As someone who has done some genealogical research I was totally enamored by this wonderful family saga that follows several generations of an Irish family named Sanders starting back in 1014 A.D. The characters and historical descriptions are impeccable and draw you into each era and the struggles of those particular times while also showing how human nature doesn’t change, that our needs for love and security have been the same for centuries. From 11th century Ireland to 18th century Boston and 20th century Texas and NYC, the settings are expertly rendered and plunge you into the culture of the day. Dizon’s dialog is always smooth and convincing, his ability to convey accents and personality always making you feel as if you are sitting in on the conversation. Exceptionally well-written, I continue to be amazed at the author’s ability to excel in every genre he pursues by adapting his style like a literary chameleon to the work at hand. No matter what genre is your favorite, rest assured that Dizon has tackled it at one time or another and it will be a good read.

By Fiction Author Rhoda D'Ettore From the opening deathbed scene of a grandfather sharing his last few moments with his grandson, this book captures the reader! Just in the first few chapters alone, we find heretics, Vikings, war, family pride, and superstition! A wonderful speech given by the king rallies his people together to fight, while opposing peoples fight to prevent being dominated by others. This author gives us a balance of dialogue, description, thought and action-- making this quite the entertaining read! He has a great way of producing real to life characters with such statements as, "“I could not care if he was in the Land of the Leprechauns, it would make me no less concerned over his well-being." Another line said something to the affect of "I'll cut out your eyes and feed them to my hog". Simply a great and entertaining read! There are no grammatical errors, the flow and style is quite entertaining which created another page turner by this author. Whether you enjoy action, historical, family sagas, this is the book for you!

This is an epic adventure that carries the reader back to Ireland and then through the generations as this family saga is brought to life. It is a pleasure and an honor to be able to into a family's past. Your heart aches with their sorrows and rises with their happiness. You forget that this story is a family you don't know. As you read this wonderful story you begin to feel you are a part of the family and as you come to know the characters you feel like you are fighting and struggling along with them. Thanks John for taking readers on this great and personal journey through the generations.

Valan's Bondmate (Zarronian Warriors Book 1), by Mardi Maxwell

About the Author I love the quirky and the unique. I believe in UFOs, ghosts, and that we have a moon station on the dark side of the moon. lol I have a wonderful son and DIL who have been kind enough (after much badgering and hinting around) to give me three lovely grandchildren. I'm a very young grandma ;-) I've loved reading since I was a little girl although just about every book I ever read I rewrote in my mind. After a while I decided to just start writing my own books. My best friend dared me to send one in, so I did and to my surprise it was accepted. I love books that make you laugh, cry, sit on the edge of your chair in fear that the couple won't work it out, and then finally cheer for them when they do. I'm a true believer in a happy ending and won't read a book or watch a movie that ends any other way. I write every day but I always find time to spend with my family and friends as well as my hobbies (cooking, gardening, traveling, and ceramics). My personal motto is "Regret is a wasted emotion." Live well and happy reading.

The writing is good, the editing has minimal problems and overall, it's an enjoyable sci-fi read. Except for the hero, which is big problem. He is likable in general. You want to understand him. You cheer him on to improve and you want them to work it out. Let's face it, amongst our angst, we want the happy ending. But he is abusive to her. *Spoilers* Leads her on a leash through town, keeps her locked in the house, dresses her in prisoner clothes, shocks her with the arm bands enough that she almost loses their children, uses her for sex then kicks her out of bed, tells her he doesn't love her and she is for his pleasure. We can wrap it up pretty, excuse it by saying it's an alien tradition/culture but this goes beyond that, IMO. In parts, it made me stop reading and lose the flow of the story because I was processing how he could treat her so cruelly. The writing would then draw me back in before, again, abruptly dumping me into an uncomfortable sense of disbelief at his next level of emotional and/or physical abuse. He wasn't a complete lost cause and did have redeeming qualities. We get that he's conflicted but...hey!? What about her? I just felt he could be dominating, alpha, etc without alienating some of the readers. I will try Book 2 as I like the writing style of this author, but I hope the hero is a more mature, less self centered, better version of Valan.

I have been a fan of Mardi Maxwell for a while, but I always strayed away from the sci-fi genre because I couldn’t see myself enjoying it but because I have great faith and love for Mardi’s writing style I accepted the challenge and I am so thankful I did. For readers who are on the fence about sci-fi, this author gives you a complete run down in the beginning of the book regarding the terms and time frames used. You have a brief history of the situation and then as your progress into the story, you will be so captivated by the plot and characters, the fear of sci-fi rapidly disappears.Valan could be considered a real demon, but as you begin to understand you and the situation he was in, I think readers will embrace him as I did. He lost a great deal due to a group of barbarians and he wants revenge. When he learns that the only way he will be able to stay alive is to mate with a woman from that group, he was willing to die instead. His father still remained determined to live after the heartbreak and pave the way for his son to mate and live as well. If Valan refuses, he will not only die, he will lose his warrior status. As demanded he and his other members invaded this enemy territory and kidnapped the women who were destined to be the new mates for the Zarronians. His mate was a beautiful young woman named Lia.Being woken up in the middle of the night and realizing she have been ripped from her home and taken to the enemy camp should have terrified her, but instead Valan saved her life. As Lia’s tribe’s tradition was, the sire can have as many women as he cares to have and the females are not treated with respect. Lia’s sire had sold her to the worst man in the community, one who enjoys punishing his girls in public and not caring if they die or not. Lia was going to be Gorm’s as soon as the cycle permitted so when she found herself mated to Valan, she was given a new chance at life. Unfortunately Valan wasn’t very nice in the beginning, he saw her as a part of the reason he lost everything. The best part of the story is when Lia tells Valan about her life before he took her and shows us how Valan’s heart begins to struggle between need to protect her and the urge to get his revenge. There are some steamy scenes that will have you grabbing some ice water and fanning yourself off. Along with that, we see Lia as she accepts her new life and role as his mate. The question is, will Valan finally release his need for revenge and allow his life to become full of happiness and love before Lia’s past life will come back and take her back to what she was desperate to escape. I really enjoyed this book and can hardly wait to read book 2. I am so thankful I took a chance at sci-fi because Mardi Maxwell could make me a fan with stories like this one.

Ancient Roman sleuth Marcus Corvinus uncovers a treasonous plot in this witty and intriguing new mysteryNovember, AD 40. When a wealthy consul’s wife asks Corvinus to investigate the death of her uncle, killed by a block of falling masonry during renovations on his estate in the Vatican Hills, a sceptical Corvinus is inclined to agree with the general verdict of accidental death. But his investigations reveal clear evidence of foul play, as well as unearthing several skeletons among the closets of this well-to-do but highly dysfunctional family. Who could have wanted Lucius Surdinus dead? His vengeful ex-wife? His ambitious mistress? His disillusioned elder, or his estranged younger, son? Or does the key to the mystery lie in the dead man’s political past? But when Corvinus’s investigations draw him to the attention of the emperor, a dangerously unpredictable Caligula, his prospects of surviving long enough to solve the mystery look slim to say the least.

Wishart does do a good job of making it still have dramatic tension By ARG A few loose ends in this one, nothing dramatic just random pieces that bug me, but loose ends isnt really fair because they are in fact written off to luck or the spirits. Always difficult to read stories where the end is literally history and unmovable. Here we know that Caligula is killed by his guards leaving the games in the end and Claudius becomes emperor. Can't say the specific games or date was in my head but ending was obvious. Wishart does do a good job of making it still have dramatic tension. I will miss Caligula though he was a crazy mean man but he was always a fun interaction. As usual the plot is simple murder uncovers nasty pile of woe/treason and tada Marcus uncovers the lot at great personal danger. This though took that formula to new heights

Lesley As Marcus Corvinus would say, this book was easy-peasy to read and I absolutely enjoyed it from start to finish. This is my first excursion into the world of Corvinus and his lovely wife Perilla in the days of ancient Rome so coming across modern language usage in a novel set during Roman times was a slight bit startling at first. Once I settled into it, though, it seemed like the most natural thing in the world. Naevia Postuma has come to tell Corvinus that her uncle, Nevius Surdinus, did not die from an accident, but was in fact murdered. She knows this because her spirit control, Alexander the Great, was very emphatic in bringing it to her attention. Now she wants Marcus to get busy and find out who the murderer is and bring someone to justice. With Alexander pulling the strings from the ether, how can Corvinus possibly refuse this request? This was simply a fun book to read. The character of Marcus Valerius Corvinus is written so he never takes himself too seriously, especially if there is the chance of a cup of wine (good wine would be best, but any wine will do) and his wife Perilla to help him sort out the tangles of all the political intrigue swirling around Rome. Surely he hasn't just uncovered a treasonous plot to assassinate the Emperor, or has he? And who is the mysterious man who saved him from the three attackers that wanted him dead? This story has plots within plots and twists that come thick and fast. Just when I thought I was on the right track I found that the road went nowhere and I had to back up and start again. And I didn't even get upset with the author for leading me down that blind alley. Since reading this novel I've learned there are many others in the series and I'm very grateful for that. I'm certainly hoping they are all as easy-peasy and OTT as this one was. If you demand that your historical mysteries be perfect in every period detail, this one with its up-to-2014 modern language usage might not be for you. If, however, you want to have fun while reading a novel, you've come to the right book.I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

Imperial business By travelswithadiplomat Marcus Corvinus is back for his fourteenth outing and this time he's tied up with the demise of Emperor Caligula. No spoilers there...it's a widely publicised historical fact. Ths time he's pulled into the sleuthing business by the forceful honey trap that is one Lady Naevia Postumia, whose ex-husband - Lucius Naevius Surdinus - didn't die from falling masonry quite as accidentally as the perpetrators would like to have Rome believe. At least, that's what her spirit guide, Alexander the Great no less, would have us believe. He might have a point because Marcus' subsequent reluctant investigations reveal a death that's tied into wider conspiracies at the very highest level. Of course, having established the death was a murder and produced a witness to the actual killer, Corvinus has to go find both motive and employer of the murderer. The family are good starting points what with the conniving Tarquitia, the young mistress of our dead ex-suffect consul who inherited a lot of property and money to the displeasure of Lucius Junior. Then there's the youngest son, Hellenus, who's estranged from his family and living as an "artist" in the slums of Rome. Add into the mix people like Gallio, the dead man's bailiff, Tarquitia's husband, Titus Otillius, a lawyer by the name of Venullius,All of this doesn't really provide any clarity for our sleuth and his usual adumbration with Perilla throws up more questions than answers. This means Corvinus has to examine further and finds himself investigating the political circles around Surdinus which leads him into the sphere of Cassius Longinus, just recalled to Rome by Caligula from his Asia governorship, the two Gaulish senators, stoical Julius Graecinus and oleaginous Anicius Cerialis, and one Valerius Asiaticus. Each of the four has an axe to grind with the Emperor, all of which leads our hero into a conspiracy theory that gets him beaten up, locked up, warned, and generally in a lot of 'furkling business' than's really good for him. As with all Wishart's novels, the immediate directions of thought, understanding, plot and action never lead us to the bigger picture until we are in the very depths of his book, so we stumble through alleys and tunnels of dimly lit ideas and concepts before emerging into the sunlight of the truth of what's really going on. Suffice it to say, this is a particularly satisfactory effort by both author and sleuth with a mystery that's confoundingly delightful to wade through. By the end satisfaction is guaranteed all round, especially as this is a novel where the nominal 'bad guys' seem to get away with everything in a manner that's...well....it's alright, to be honest. No sense of being cheated.Aside from the modern and irreverent vernacular like: "pukkah-sahib" or "pint of neat vinegar" that Marcus uses in these novels - something that normally has the historical purist in this reviewer spluttering into his coffee mug but chooses to be indulgent because Corvinus is a favourite read - there's a few typos that appear all too common these days since the advent of the e-book. For example, "communi-cation" "sena-torial quartet". There are some grammatical quirks: "bosky woodland" which is like saying 'red blood', the adjective describing the fixed noun. I liked the educational aspects in the novel. For example, a page or so explaining the word 'recension', time spent investigating the philosophy of Aristarchus, the etymology of 'phobos' and 'phobeisthai'.For all these minor quibbles and tiny footnotes of pleasure, I have to say that if you are a fan of Roman mystery novels - the likes written by Davis, Saylor, Roberts, Scott, Rowe et al. - then read the novels of David Wishart, especially his Marcus Corvinus series. They are a guilty pleasure on any day.
