I know I'll be going against the majority of reviews here, but this book was merely acceptable. When I saw that Outlaw had four and a half stars, I expected a real page turner, with snappy dialogue, great character development, and a good super powers/magic system. Instead, Origins is a run of the mill YA adventure suited more for the older teen crowd than full adults. The plot goes something like: Formerly nerdy boy gets powers. Boy begins to play sports. Girls start to like him. There's a bully. He has problems at home. He becomes a hero. There is precious little that's original. The writing, while acceptable, isn't exceptional. There are repetitive moments in the book - like the many detailed play by play football games that are described. There is some decent character development at times, like with Hannah, one of the MC's love interests, but many of the other characters are flat, almost caricatures. Also, there are a few somewhat odd... almost promotional plugs in the book that are discordant. For instance, neither the main character or any other major character is portrayed as all that religious, but, about halfway through the book, the MC goes to a church and discovers that his assistant coach is a deacon there. Pretty much immediately the assistant coach writes the MC a check, from the church, to help out with the MC's money problems at home. The MC then says/thinks, "Before I got into my car, I glanced at the check. It was for two thousand dollars. I drove home with shaking hands, crying, praying, and laughing." Little PSA type things like this were a bit discordant for me.So, I'll stick to my guns. I have no idea why so many people have rated this book so highly. It isn't horrible, but it also isn't great. Origins is just a run of the mill, quasi-religious, young adult super hero story.

Knowing it was geared towards young adults and knowing I'm in my upper 30s I was nervous it might not capture my attention. Not only did it capture my attention but I read it fast...then moved on to the next one quickly and finished that one too. I fell in love with the characters. If you are in high school or have ever been in high school you can TOTALLY relate with the main character Chase Jackson and the struggles he has to find himself and fit into the high school scene. You can't help but fall in love with him and his friends. I found myself carving out 10 minutes here and there in my day to read because it was addicting! My only critique (while still giving it 5 starts, mind you) is some editing misses but I am sure they will get worked out with the next edition. And honestly, I'm kind of bummed that there's only 1 more book in the series. Wish it would just keep going. Good work Mr. Janney! Well done on this series. I love to ready but really struggle to find time and in the span of about a month I've read the Outlaw and Infected. It takes a special kind of writing style and content to hold my attention like that!!!

Henry Dowell-Playwright "Triton’s Deep is the story of Enzo, a novice monk determined to find his true identity in a half-drowned world where monastics rule over the people, some whole, some damaged, but all looking to the lost gods of the sea to save them from the disaster they know is surely coming."I have to say, I really enjoyed this new novel by KH Rennie. It runs about 300 pages or so but you'd never know it the way the action moves along. The price is pretty good for that length novel as well. I recommend this to all lovers of fantasy.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Other world of sea people filled with adventure By Jason This book starts off on the shores of a wintry ocean shore below an ancient monastery. It then moves underwater to a world where different gods rule. The protagonist, Enzo, sets out to save his world, unsure of where his alliances lie. Along the way he falls in love. This is a well-written and engaging book that conjurs up a thoroughly convincing alternate reality.

The hotel that I love like a fatherland is situated in one of the great port cities of Europe, and the heavy gold Antiqua letters in which its banal name is spelled out shining across the roofs of the gently banked houses are in my eye metal flags, metal bannerets that instead of fluttering shine out their greeting. In the 1920s and 30s, Joseph Roth travelled extensively in Europe, leading a peripatetic life living in hotels and writing about the towns through which he passed. Incisive, nostalgic, curious and sharply observed - and collected together here for the first time - his pieces paint a picture of a continent racked by change yet clinging to tradition. From the 'compulsive' exercise regime of the Albanian army, the rickety industry of the new oil capital of Galicia, and 'split and scalped' houses of Tirana forced into modernity, to the individual and idiosyncratic characters that Roth encounters in his hotel stays, these tender and quietly dazzling vignettes form a series of literary postcards written from a bygone world, creeping towards world war; introduced and exquisitely translated by Michael Hofmann.

The Hotel Years: Wanderings in Europe between the Wars, by Joseph Roth

Review “Nonstop brilliance, irresistible charm and continuing relevance.” (Jeffrey Eugenides - New York Times Book Review)“Roth captures and encapsulates Europe in those uncertain hours before the upheaval of a continent and the annihilation of a civilization.” (Cynthia Ozick)“A singular achievement of both journalism and literature.” (Thane Rosenbaum - The Washington Post Book World)“His was a voice of uncowed conscience and irrepressible humanism, his body of work a damning j’accuse against the folly of the age. The dispatches in The Hotel Years constitute a compelling vindication of his claims for the feuilleton’s literary possibilities.” (Houman Barekat - Los Angeles Review of Books)“So consistently incisive that we devour the lot, compulsively, from cover to cover.” (Amanda Hopkinson - The Independent)“Roth was as equally magisterial and entertaining in his journalism as he was in his novels, and Michael Hofmann’s new selection of Roth’s nonfiction, his fourteenth translation of Roth’s overall, is thoroughly addictive.” (André Naffis-Sahely - Paris Review)“Dazzling, elegiac, mordant and harrowingly oracular by turn.” (George Prochnik - New York Times Book Review)“The Hotel Years is a master class in journalism, and a reminder that when a writer can play multiple small notes, he creates a full composition that carries the depth of meaning.” (Juan Vidal - NPR Books)“Roth’s hotel years came to an abrupt end in the Old World. Thankfully, his account of them, and of the turbulent cross-currents of his age, live on in exquisite collections such as this one.” (Malcolm Forbes - The American Interest)“Brilliantly perceptive, beautifully crafted and often dripping with mordant wit.” (Toby Lichtig - The Wall Street Journal)

By Jill Meyer There's a difference in reading history written as contemporaneous accounts and reading history written well after the events. The first seems more "live", even if we sometimes know what happened after the author has written his account. That's very, very true about Joseph Roth's essays in the book, "The Hotel Years".The 65 or so essays chosen by the book's editors were mostly written as newspaper pieces, between 1919 and 1939. Roth died in 1939 at the age of 45 of alcoholism, but the Austrian-Jewish journalist had made a name for himself since 1919 as an observer of culture and politics in the inter-war years. Most of the essays included were printed in the "Frankfurter Zeitung", in a Berlin newspaper, and in two papers that I think were German-language papers published in Paris. But the articles would be printable in any newspaper, at least up til 1936 or so. Roth rarely seemed to write about specific events, though in 1934 he wrote about a journalist's job in reporting "The Night of the Long Knives". No, in general, Roth seemed to write about places he traveled - Albania and the Soviet Union, among others - and the people he met along the way, and the hotels he stayed in. Since he rarely identified which hotels they were, it's difficult to know where they were located. One hotel, though, sounds like a less wacky cousin of Wes Anderson's "Hotel Budapest", with it's international staff and clientele. To return, though, to my point about reading contemporaneous history. I noticed that WW1 was always referred to as "The Great War", though I'd be surprised if Roth didn't think another world war was on its way. His writing in the early 1920's already referred to "Nazis" and "swastikas". It's too bad that Joseph Roth didn't live longer; I wonder what his impressions of the world of WW2 would be in print. But maybe it's better he didn't live longer. His writing in these selected essays is truly worth reading by anyone interested in the inter-war years.

List This is a fascinating book of short "feuilleton" essays that in interesting ways characterize Germany and Poland in the years between WW 1 and WW2.. Roth describes the quality of life in cities in many countries as he travels and absorbs the atmosphere, the political situation, the life of the people. Although seemingly simple the essay are deep in emotional impact.

What a despicable shame that everyone in our poorly educated populace knows who a Kardashian is, but the name of Joseph Roth echoes in oblivion. He was a magnificent, poignant, prescient writer. The story of his life and death will break your heart. I so hope that the brilliant translator, Michael Hofmann, will translate/write Mr. Roth's biography. There isn't a scrap of Joseph Roth's writing that should remain unknown.

Jesus is not who you think he is. The year is 75 CE. Joseph ben Jude, the nephew of Yeshua, is frail and ailing, but he gathers together stacks of goat-skin parchment and picks up a reed pen. He has a prophecy to fulfill before his death: that he will record the story of his uncle Yeshua. A former Essene and now an Ebionite—the first generation of non-Gentile Christians—Joseph grieves over the destruction of the Temple. He fears the End Times are near. He is also troubled by the accounts already being told of his uncle. His grandmother—a virgin? His uncle—the son of god? Simon Peter—head of the early Church and not his uncle James? Follow Joseph as the suppressed story of Yeshua and the early Church unfolds, revealing a message of hope that resounds throughout the ages and speaks to us even more urgently today.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Riveting Historical Novel! By TwoDogMom This fictional gospel of Jesus, as told by his nephew, Joseph, is a book I recommend highly. Joseph tells of the same Jesus (The Master Yeshua) that I learned about as a child, but his words tell a more reasonable, yet just as inspiring, tale. The nephew's perspective left me with what felt like an inner circle knowledge of the life and death of the man we call Jesus. The complex relationships among the disciples and family is fascinating. Phenomenal research went into this historical presentation. The story is well paced and well told. This is a great read for anyone, religious or not, who wishes to gain a greater understanding of what could have gone on in Jesus's life. I find myself wishing this were an actual gospel in the Bible. Great book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Let the words speak for themselves By C A Mathews One of my favourite passages from the book is: '...the rules of men are sometimes as substantial as the wisps that fly from a dandelion.' Another gem, which particularly applies to the God of the Old Testament: 'God is not a Punisher but is full of Mercy.' Whether or not those who adhere slavishly to the New Testament will agree, this book is packed full of truth and wisdom.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable read with a fresh perspective on an age-old story... By Tedi L. Trindle Smoothly narrated and meticulously researched, “The Master Yeshua” is a well-crafted work of fiction. Fans of historical novels will enjoy Luck’s evocative prose as she takes her readers back to the time of Jesus, as seen through the eyes of his nephew, Joseph. As the subtitle suggests, the book is written as an “undiscovered gospel”, a first draft written by an old man who was a child during his uncle’s ministry and grew up hearing the story from firsthand accounts of family members and friends. But in this gospel, we learn of the years of Jesus’ life which are unaccounted for in the Bible and what happened after he was crucified. The author also helps us imagine the turbulent times, the deadly politics, and rampant oppression of first century Palestine. It is within this chaotic environment that the Master Yeshua rises to preach not the violent overthrow of the government that his people are waiting for, but love, patience, tolerance and forgiveness in the face of violence, poverty, and oppression. Some modern themes resonate throughout the book, reminding us that, although centuries have passed, many of life’s challenges remain the same. The overall message is one of hope, faith and the good that can come from serving one’s fellow man and lifting up those less fortunate. This is a message for our own times.

Nicholson "The Black Dragon: A Claire-Agon Dragon Book" is a stand-alone fantasy adventure by author Salvador Mercer. This Kindle e-book was approximately 304 printed pages and sold for $0.99 at time of writing this review. Please Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.General Theme (minor spoilers)After centuries of quiet, an old horror returns to reek havoc upon the land. The authorities are slow to acknowledge any possibility of a return of the Black Dragon; unfortunately the people and the nearby towns are about to pay the high price for this sluggish response. After a couple of failed and disastrous attempts, an elite group of heroes are sent into the Kero Swamp to try to rout out this ancient nemesis. However, clandestine plotting from nobles with different allegiances and personal agendas have placed their own people in the party to make sure their interests are looked after. The results... well let's say they are different than anyone expected. Some thoughts on "The Black Dragon"...1.) a sword and sorcery tale.2.) generally well written and edited.3.) lots of intense encounters, graphically described4.) a plot that keeps keeps moving quickly; there’s not much downtime.5.) important characters can be injured or killed. Adding a degree of realism. In fact, hardly anyone is sacrosanct in this book.6.) cover art... a stunning, eye-catching image7.) appendix... at the back, giving some info on the planet Claire Agon. The Cons:1.a) no map... a map would have given readers a sense of direction, distance and topography. Even more important when you take into account that there were several adversarial factions from different locales found in this novel.1.b) the fact that there was no map to establish a visual relationship to these groups, added to my sense of confusion and disassociation, especially when considering the amount of the clandestine plotting that occurred in this tale.2.) peculiar and unusual reactions, e.g. Olivia reaction to Markus after she discovered his intentions. Locations 1755 and then 2640 (Kindle reader). This was kind of a turning point for me in this work... I reread these passages several times to make sure I had it right.3.) character development and dialogues... see impressions below.Impressions:A very good mid-late Young Adult (YA) tale that maybe just had too much YA qualities that would make it a somewhat uninspiring read for lovers of the serious, Adult orientated, fantasy adventure genre. And while I thought the opening sequence was intense and exciting I felt the overall novel featured some shallow character development along with a fair amount of forced and contrived group-based dialogues.I started off very enthused but became less so, as the novel progressed.Rating...As a mid-late YA read... 4 1/2 StarsAs an Adult FA read... 3 StarsFinal rating... 4 Stars, as it is mentioned on the Amazon.com product page in the teen sectionRay Nicholsonraynicholsonsreviews@hotmail.com@ralannicholson

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not The Typical Dragon-Slayer Story. By Charles Daniel Christopher This novel has an interesting literary universe in which various nations, and factions within those nations, pursue their own agendas while dealing with the recent end of the dragon's hibernation cycle. The protagonist, Olivia Moross, is caught directly between theses competing nations and factions when her status as a member of both one of the nobility and one of the Paladins of her faith cause the aristocracy and the church question her loyalties. There are a few problems with the story. First, the idea that the waking Dragons regard themselves as the true rulers of the world is undercut by their tendency to regard their own powers as "evil" while they refer to the "holy imanations" of the human temples as "evil" as well. It is an unusual being which can view itself as the villain in their own story--so the Dragon is inconsistent on that basis. Second, the author's appendix describes his literary universe as being based on an unusual solar system with silicone based life forms (the Dragons and the "people"). However, the people are far too human in their behaviors and artifacts for that premise to hold. Why would silicone based life forms replicate a humanoid form? Even if they developed into humanoid beings why would they develop butter, wine, tea, beer, cotton cloth, etc.? This is another inconsistency that intrudes on the story (especially if you read the appendix before the story so that you understand how the universe is supposed to work before getting into the novel).

I don't usually read clean romances, but this one had me at hello. Set in the time of The Titanic, it feels like the antithesis of the movie "Titanic." At certain points, I could even hear the soundtrack from the movie in my mind. I will definitely see what else this author has to offer.

The characters came alive as they worked their jobs in the industrial age and as they spoke so politely and dignified as was expected at the time. One couple gracefully meets and falls in love as the their boarding the Titanic awaits.
