Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Bradley is back! Michael Bradley, author of the critically acclaimed, Swords at Sunset and other non-fiction books on the Holy Grail (he was a researcher for The Da Vinci Code movie), has now written his first novel since the 1970s, when Imprint and The Mantouche Factor together sold more than half-a-million copies. Now, the long fiction drought is over with the release of a new novel: The Magdalene Mandala draws on Bradley's enviable reputation as a Holy Grail expert to lend authenticity to a plot that twists and turns at a rapid pace, bringing together murder and intrigue, political cover-ups, the Grail...and Mary Magdalene. Added to this intoxicating literary mix are detailed descriptions of ingenious low-tech survivalist devices.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Magdalene Mandala and Swords at Sunset a great pair By Nancy Smith Now this is a wonderful pairing: Michael Bradley's novel The Magdalene Mandala with his non-fiction Swords at Sunset tracing the Holy Grail to North America. This package offering is superb. I picked up both books and could not put either of them down until I reached the back cover. Amazing! The Magdalene Mandala is a fast-paced thriller that's a bit like James Bond meeting the Da Vinci Code (author Bradley was a researcher for the Da Vinci Code movie and is a recognized Holy Grail expert). No wonder Bradley's prior two novels were major bestsellers: This book combines an exciting, action-filled story with meticulous research on the Grail. Well done!Swords at Sunset is the true story of Bradley's efforts tracing the Holy Grail to Canada and the United States. It's all supported by archeological evidence from digs in Vermont, Quebec, Niagara, Ontario and elsewhere. He raises many fascinating possibilities in this well argued book that left me wondering if descendents of Jesus Christ's bloodline now walk among us.I highly recommend both books. Each is absiolutely terrific and they do indeed make a great pair.

The worst of sinners rise up to be the greatest saints. St. Mary of Edessa, aka The Harlot Saint, began her life as Mariah, a daughter of a wealthy family. When both of her parents died while she was still young she was taken in by her uncle, a hermit who would one day become St. Abraham. Through his teachings, she learned the way of Christian living. Yet, as a young woman, she gave into her feelings for a man, a priest no less. Cast out and forced into a life of prostitution, Mariah struggled to find her way to forgiveness, redemption, and finally home.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Harlot Saint By The Bookend Family I greatly enjoyed this story! It is inspiring, emotional, and uplifting. This is the story of a young girl who is born to privilege, but after her mother dies giving birth to her, and then her beloved father grows ill several years later and also dies. While the girl is heartbroken she is also looking forward to the adventure of living in a new distant land with her Uncle, who has become her caregiver. The distant land turns out to be very humbling. I loved that this character when faced with some very humbling experiences did not become angry, but was grateful for the expansion of her understanding of others and the world around her. There is much more involved with this tale as she grows older, make mistakes, learns from them, and repents. It is an aspiring read, that is written very well. The story moved along seamlessly and kept me riveted to the pages. The author did a fantastic job of bringing each person within the pages to life. I highly recommend this book and would love to hear what you thought of it.Review by: Stacy PalmFull Reviews Available: http://www.thebookendfamily.weebly.com

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. beautifully told from her own point of view By Daniel A Willis Although this is the story of a Christian saint, the lessons she learns in her life transcend religion. We all, regardless of our faith, make mistakes in our lives, have to live the consequences of those errors, and eventually see redemption. Mary of Edessa's story is just that, beautifully told from her own point of view.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A truly enjoyable read, By Patricia Hopper Patteson According to the author, the Harlot Saint, Mary of Odessa, died in 371 AD. At the early age of seven she loses her parents and is taken to live with her uncle, a monk. In a primitive cave, she learns to live by her uncle’s values which are devotion to God, prayer, and complete selflessness. About the time she becomes a woman, a visiting monk is smitten by her and works hard to gain her affection so he can seduce her. He succeeds and she fully expects him to marry her, but marriage is not on his agenda and he leaves Mary devastated. Because of her strict upbringing in the ways of Christianity, she feels she has sinned greatly with no chance of forgiveness and leaves her uncle’s home for a life of prostitution. Among the many men who become her patrons, she meets several who are special to her.McGregor retells the story of Mary of Odessa in an easy, and at times, lyrical way. I joined Mary on her journey that reached rock bottom as she turned her back on everything she held true and honest. Even as she falls into self-loathing and spirals downward into a life of alcohol, sex and violence, I wanted to see if she’d make it back to her former life. A truly enjoyable read.

Frost in the Sun (CLAIRE LORRIMER'S HISTORICAL SAGAS), by Claire Lorrimer

From Publishers Weekly This run-of-the-mill family saga follows the members of two wealthy enclaves, the English Costains and the Spanish Monteros. When, in 1913, Casilda Montero, indulged and impulsive, leaves her father's vast cattle ranch for an English convent school, she accomplishes two things: she comes closer to her cousin Alan Costain, whom she is determined to marry; and she makes a lifelong friend in Joscelin Howard, a talented student whose family is of lower social status. As Casilda pursues stormy sexual relationships and Joscelin struggles with her unexpressed love for Alan, the Spanish Civil War looms. Soon brothers and cousins will be on opposite sides; Casilda's brother lives in Germany with a Jewish wife under the shadow of nascent Nazism. The sprawling story reaches even to New York, where Lady Costain, Alan's mother, has fled from an unfulfilling marriage. Scenes of aristocratic power and privilege, and of consummated and thwarted passion mark the plot's milestones, but there is no single character among the many in this busy novel who is realized beyond a stereotypical mold. Lorrimer's other romances include Mavreen and The Chatelaine. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Casilda Montero meets Joscelin Howard when the eight-year-olds are first sent to an English convent school before World War I. The wealthy daughter of a Spanish nobleman, Cassy becomes the champion of less fortunate Joss, including her in family events and making her the recipient of all her confidences for the next 30 years. As a child, Joss falls in love with Cassy's English cousin Alan. Although her love for him grows as she does, she feels such gratitude to Cassy that she willingly sacrifices her own happiness. If Joss's self-denial can be accepted, the reader will enjoy a tightly written historical novel offering several perspectives on the Spanish Civil War. As a love story, however, the book leaves the reader dissatisfied. Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

SWEEPING EPIC SAGA By little lady blue A solid 4 ½ Stars! This far-reaching saga spanning 1909 to 1939 sweeps through Spain, England, Scotland, Paris, Italy and Germany. The story of two best friends who are so different in every way except that they fall in love with the same man.Casilda Montero (Cassy) from a titled Spanish family and Joscelin Howard (Joss) of the sedate English middle class meet at boarding school and an unlikely bond is forged. Cassy is one of a large Spanish family while Joss is an only child. In the beginning Cassie as a teenager is a head-strong, mischievous girl while Joss is demure and compliant - against all odds their friendship is sealed and they become life-long friends.Cassie, as an adult, reveals herself to be truly vain, self-centered and spoiled (shades of Scarlett O'Hara) while Joss' sweet, empathetic nature allows for Cassie's every misdeed. Their friendship never wanes and survives even the most devastating drama, even their love of the same man.Not unlike `Gone with the Wind' this 613 page novel brings the reader a little bit of everything an epic novel should have - love; passion; history; friendship; secrets; family; and war and leads the reader to a most bitter-sweet, satisfying ending.First published in January 1986 this story could have been written yesterday. Since I missed it in 1986 I am pleased to have found this newly published edition.

What do Westerns and detective stories have in common? Quite a lot, if you ask pioneering author and frontier lawyer William MacLeod Raine. In Tangled Trails, Raine brings together the best of both genres in an engaging mystery that unfolds in the wide open spaces of the Old West.

“Take the love affairs of a Montana ranger and a charming Wild Rose who walks like ‘a young Greek goddess in the dawn of the wold’ and you have a Western love story. Take a murder, with half a dozen people equally to be suspected, with a mysterious Oriental meeting an untoward and baffling end, and the murdered man’s attractive nephew pursuing and finding the real criminal, whose villainy is so well concealed that the reader does not discern it until the author wishes and you have a mystery story.” -Boston Transcript

“A William MacLeod Raine thriller. Its narrative literally flashes through three hundred pages of breathless excitement and mystery.” -Boston Transcript

“Mr. Raine proves that he can spin a detective yarn with the best of them.” -New York Times

Fun reading, if not altogether believable By Wreditor William MacLeod Raine's specialty was the western, and TANGLED TRAILS is subtitled "A Western Detective Story." However, the novel is about as much a western as anything Agatha Christie ever wrote. The only thing westerly about it is location: Wyoming and Colorado. Otherwise, it's a modern (1921) mystery in which cattleman and rodeo star Kirby Lane sets out to help his friend Rose McLean who, in turn, is trying to help her sister Esther, who has gotten involved with a man who has impregnated her out of wedlock, a no-no in that era. The man is her employer, James Cunningham, who happens to be Kirby Lane's uncle. When Cunningham is murdered, Lane sets out to find his killer because he, Lane, is one of the numerous suspects. The book is a pleasant diversion and a throwback to an era when pulp fiction, which this is reminiscent of, was very popular. Don't worry about some of its implausibilities; just trot along for the ride. Oh, wait! It's not a cowboy tale of the "wild west." Lane mostly travels by car or train. It's more like a B-movie detective story. So cruise along for the ride.
