Because I knew the third book isn't out yet and I couldn't put this book down. This is an excellent book. The writing style is a bit abrupt but once you get into the story it is a page turner. Really enjoying the progression of the inventions and technological breakthroughs. Not that many stories let you walk through the steps of a societal advancement. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy this series.

Bad old translation By Shaman I don't know why such a weak old translation remains in print given the excellent more recent ones by folks who actually read, speak, and understand current K'iche' Maya and who also have the translators' tools for historical work. 24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Drury succeeds with his tale of ancient Egypt By Billy J. Hobbs Much, of course, has been written about ancient Egypt in non-fiction and in the past two decades an increasing interest in the fictional world of Egypt has spawned a number of excellent novels, especially mysteries. Allen Drury's "A God Against the Gods," published in 1976--timed well with the King Tut craze associated with the world tour of the late king's funeral treasures--undoubtedly is the "father" of this subject/genre. And well it should. Drury takes the time of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, some 3300 years ago, and proceeds to tell the story of this "horse-faced" king, husband to the beautiful Nefertiti and brother to the young King Tut. The time of the pharaoh is rife with struggle--and plenty of problems. Against the advice of many of his advisers, Akhenaten proceeds to change the Egyptian theological concept of multi-gods into a monotheistic concept. Needless to say, this does not go well with his subjects. Changing the tenor of the religion, however, is only one concern Akhenaten faces. With Drury's renowned patience for detail and historical research, the novel examines the numerous aspects of the pharaoh's life, especially his relationship with Nefertiti and of his zeal to produce an heir. He doesn't, of course, and therein lies many of his problems. "(Akhenaten) was perhaps the most human and touching of all the Pharoahs, for he greatly tried, and greatly failed, to bring to humanity a universal symbol of love." And it is the trials--and these failures--so poignantly presented that makes this book well worth the read, not just to Egyptologists, but to the layperson as well. Granted, not all authorities agree on Drury's interpretations (Drury points that out in his introduction), but the author's research and theories are academically acceptable, although there is disagreement in familial structure, relationships, pronunciations/spelling that experts may (or may not) recognize. Regardless, Drury's skill as an outstanding author carry the book along at an amazingly fast pace--almost if you were riding the current of the Nile itself. "Fascinating" is, indeed, an apt description of this book.(Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

By David Zampino The late Pulitzer Prize winning author Allen Drury in this novel, (and its sequel, "Return to Thebes") moves radically away from the genre which made him famous (the Washington Political Novel), and shares with his readers an historical novel based on the events of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt -- when the concept of monotheism was (possibly) first seriously considered. Readers of Drury's political novels will recognize his characteristic style of writing, character portrayal, and the like -- but the subject is one totally foreign to most Americans. Drury makes it come alive.I have no idea what possessed Mr. Drury to write this novel -- but I'm glad that he did.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. While sometimes slow, it was often excellent. By A Customer I cannot say that I enjoyed A God Against the Gods as much as I did Return to Thebes. Indeed, I came close to giving up at several points in this book. But, when Drury is good, he is very good. At the critical times during this book, such as Akhenaten's founding of Akhetaten's altar. His descriptions are always excellent, and his historical accuracy is unquestionable. I did feel a connection to the characters, although Drury's style made me feel as if I was reading letters that they were sending me. He puts the treader on an equal level with the characters, and does not talk down to the reader. To Jeffrey Li, I must ask, "If this book was so bad, why did you read the sequel?"

Based on factual events and endorsed by a Houston meteorologist, Thompson blends the facts known regarding the hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas in 1900 with the fictional lives of compelling characters to create a book that will live on long after you finish reading the last page.If you love history, Galveston, or just want a great story, this is your book!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Historically accurate and exciting story By Brenda J. Lott I'm a survivor of Hurricane Camille of 1969, that tore through Gulfport, MS in 1969 and the worst storm to hit the US Mainland. So I couldn't wait to read Thompson's Hurricane. Instantly I was drawn into her fictional story of the historical and devastating storm of 1900, that hit the island of Galveston, Texas. Thompson vividly portrays the catastrophic and devastating effects on human life and property in sharp contrast to hope, survival and faith. I read this book this past weekend, while in Mobile, AL with the threat of tropical storm Arlene in the background, so it was perfect reading material.Drama and well developed characters tell the unfolding story of death and triumph as the storm moves into the gulf with such impact, that lives on the island are changed forever. I could almost taste the salt water, feel the roaring wind and slashing rain, so accurately described by Thompson, a native Texan. Though 6,000 people lost their lives in this terrible hurricane, many found strength and compassion to help their fellow islanders, and selfishly give of themselves, even in their own despair. This well crafted, minute by minute story, will pull at your heartstrings and make you say a prayer for every storm that enters your life. I highly reccommend it.

Merritt Sometimes our humble beginnings-the ones we can't wait to get away from-are the ones we're inevitably drawn back to. So is the case for successful newspaperman Brent Murphy when he becomes disenchanted with the fast pace of New York City and returns to his hometown Island of Galveston. His return coincides with an event of catastrophic proportions, the 1900 Galveston hurricane.Mrs. Thompson, a native Texan, has crafted an engrossing tale of tragedy, sadness, courage, and most importantly, hope. Experience one of this country's most talked about storms through the eyes of these well-developed characters. You will cheer for their bravery and cry over their loss. A wonderful tribute to the victims of the 1900 Galveston hurricane. A great read. Highly recommend.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. They just keep getting better! By Amers **I received a copy of this book from the Author, Raven Williams, in exchange for a fair and honest review.**Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian – I Dig Good BooksMaia, a human who has visions and dreams of another time and another life. She doesn’t feel “at home” with her current life but she can’t figure out why until she follows the advice of her Goddess and calls upon the man in her vision. What happens next will change her life and the life of many more. Drago, a dragon shifter, learns there is more to his self and life that he was never to learn. This knowledge changes his life and changes the lives of his father and brother. Can this knowledge lead to benefit or turmoil? What will happen as more truths are unraveled after years of them being hidden? This book grabbed me by the shoulders and sucked me in. It’s got an incredible mix of things going on that keeps you reading and WANTING to read. There is some suspense, some action, a small amount of romance as the characters find their true mates, and some laughter. It’s a wonderful mix of emotions as you read. The author, Raven Williams, has done an incredible job with her description in this book. Her description ramps up my love of this book because it allows me to visualize the scenes and characters as I read them. One thing that was fun about this book was that each character grabbed a piece of me. There is no character, in my opinion (excluding the dark or bad characters), which is more important than another. Although they have council’s and leaders, they seem to all hold themselves as the same importance as another. The leaders don’t use their power to boss people around. They give suggestions and take suggestions. You don’t find this often in books but it seemed to really stick out and grab my attention. This series is a series that I can’t get enough of. Fantasy, YA, or even Paranormal are all genre’s that I like reading, but there aren’t a lot that I just absolutely love. This is definitely and exception to the rule! Another added benefit is that the author did write this book so that in case you read it before book one, you will still be able to understand what’s going on. I do suggest to read book one first though.Grab yourself a copy today!

You learn the story behind the story, and then it leads you to the rest of the story coming in book3! Makes one wonder if you lived a previous life as an elf, dragon shifter, or guardian; be it good or bad, for all of it in this series. The dark once again tries its best to triumph over the light. There are some surprising cameo appearances from gods of otherworlds which will make you cheer. Looking forward to book 3, I hear it is epic...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fun addition to the series By Kat Caffee This book picks up where Elven Jumper leaves off. If you haven't read the first one yet, you're missing out on some of the subtler parts of this book. Technically, this can stand on its own, as there is a beginning and ending. However, there are enough threads picked up from the first book, and left for the next to pick up that reading this one without the rest is strongly not recommended. When I finally had a chance to do some reading, I had every intention of reading a book and posting my reviews. Instead, Raven's series captivated me enough I wound up diving off onto a reading binge, which then left me no time to write the reviews until now. So, this is another vastly over due review, and I'm relying heavily on what I remember from multiple months ago, rather than just a few days. With that said....This book continues to build upon the foundations laid down in Elven Jumper, solidifying and enriching the worlds, as well as adding a new one to the mix. The Elven Realm has been fully fleshed in with this installment, to the point I remember a sense of peace and tranquility permeating me while I read the passages based in this Realm. This was not the case for the Draconian Realm. There is enough detail to give it a solid skeleton, but there was an obvious difference between the previously established settings and the new ones. It wasn't enough to jar me out of the reading experience, but it did make for a sharp break when the scenes shifted. Unlike Elven Jumper, this book also had a little more difficulty in the settings on Earth as well. Most of the new settings were sketched in with only enough detail for the story to hang on, rather than given the depth of development which had occurred in the previous book. The contrast in development may have come about because I was devouring the books so quickly, which left the memory of the previous book fresh in my mind, even as I rampaged my way through the next.I was happy to see that the character development did not flag. Though the cast that carried forward from the previous book did not get as much attention, they also did not remain stagnant. The new characters with this book were given a quick introductory sketch, and then the work of fleshing them in really began. The old and new cast worked well together, developing all of the characters into unique people. I had no trouble keeping track of who was where or how they fit into the over all story, despite most of the non-human cast having very similar names. This installment shifted from heavily plot driven to a more drive between the plot and characters. There were a few times when it felt like things were a touch too pat, but not enough to detract from my enjoyment. The pace of the story beautifully reflected the urgency of what was occurring, which helped keep me turning to pages to find out what happened next.Overall, this was a very satisfying read, and may have been the book that cemented my addiction to the series. It was still a light, entertaining read, but when I finished I remember the sense of having been somewhere else while I was devouring what was on offer. A well deserved five out of five stars for this one!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Book By Mary Romero I loved this book, it kept my interest right from the start. It takes place in the time of Mussolini and his black shirts, it starts with the murder of Isabella's husband and her shooting, she survives the shooting but can't really move forward. It tells of life under Mussolini and the hardships of the people. I wish I could give it more then five stars. Isabella keeps to herself and her work as an architect, one of the first females to gain that position. Her world of isolation begins to unravel when a child is left in her care and the meeting of the photographer who is paid to take pictures of the ideal towns Mussolini wants to build. You won't be disappointed if you read it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. and she did not disappoint, not in any way By Incy Black Kate Furnivall is my go-to author when I crave something layered, pensive and atmospheric (setting), and she did not disappoint, not in any way.The Italian Wife is more an experience than a read. You live the stink of corruption, feel the weight of the dictatorship, taste the suppressed anger, and thrill at the subtle acts of revolt--Yes, greater acts of rebellion occur as the plot builds, but its the every day ones against the ever present threat of punishment, that get you cheering.Isabella, the heroine: courageous, intelligent, committed, she's a fighter... Wonderful.Roberto, the quiet hero: deliciously subversive to the core albeit subtly.Secondary characters: a solid mix, some colourful, and some cruel, viciously so.Plot: fully layered, multi-layered, tense, rewarding climax.Setting: original and convincing, brilliantly textured.I loved this book!

It is a fascinating insight into Mussolini and his regime, and very well researched. The story gripped me from the very first page when Isabella an architect is sitting in a cafe, and a woman asks her to look after her child for a few minutes, only to discover she commits suicide from a building she designed. The story has all kinds of twists and turns, and delves into Isabella's past when her husband was shot dead, and she was injured, and she sets out to find out the truth with a photographer Roberta who she discovers also has a past.Kate always manages to transport her reader into a different time and place, she does this so effortlessly. I so want to go and visit this area, I can already taste the limoncello!

The Red Scarf: The Kate Brady Series (Book Two), by Babette Hughes

Review Praise for The Hat, Book One in the Kate Brady series: A captivating love story with a twist. Richly drawn characters in an era of gangsters and bootleggers." --Joseph Kertes, Winner, National Jewish Book Award for Fiction

"This is a terrific story that chronicles the beginning of the Mafia and its revelations that profoundly changed lives forever." --Jewish Book World

"This is a deceptively simple tale told in a straightforward, spare manner. The author is particularly good at drawing the blithe lack of self-awareness of an inexperienced young woman, as well as pointing out the self-centeredness of youth." --Historical Novels Review

"The novel's Ben Gold could pass as a universal Jewish underworld type during Prohibition and the Great Depression." --Alfred Fried, Pulitzer nominee and author

“Riveting.... The book sizzles with sex.... Its harrowing conclusion left me breathless. Hughes is a gifted writer”. -―Violet Spevack, Cavalcade columnist, Cleveland Jewish News

“Hughes does an outstanding job of not only bringing the Cleveland mafia underworld alive to a surprise ending, but also in describing the role of women in crime families and what people will do for money.” -―David Goebel, Editor, The Cleveland Press

At 22, she's entered college and wants to meet a nice man, ready to leave behind her identity as mob-widow. Unfortunately for her (great news for readers), it's not as easy as she'd hoped-- this time she's on the side of the law, as she volunteers to work undercover for J Edgar Hoover. The writing is bracing and clever, and the story moves along at a galloping pace. There are wonderful moments of comedy and wit, and there is also a specificity of details that places the story squarely in 1936 (movie stars, crimes, historical events, even food). All this is good stuff, but the best treat of all is Kate herself. She's funny, sensitive and a little eccentric, bouncing along on one adventure after another. I hope we will see more of her!

Looks like things might quiet down with college and a new love, but quickly Kate finds herself living on the edge when she gets involved with another crime family after befriending Mimi, who is married to an abusive gangster who has Lady MacBeth for a mother! Hughes' writing is crisp, clean, and witty--things move along at nice clip. Using a female protagonist to tell a mob story during the bootlegging age is an original twist, and Hughes succeeds creating a female voice that is sympathetic, funny (in a crime drama, no less!) and smart. I'm hoping to hear more from Kate Brady--she attracts adventure!
