The bestselling memoir from the greatest relief pitcher of all time. He is listed along with Ruth, Mantle, Gehrig, and DiMaggio as a top-five Yankee of all time. He is the man who has intimidated thousands of batters by merely opening a bullpen door. Rivera is also a man of God and family whose contributions to charity and community ensure a meaningful life long after his time as The Closer is over. Now he tells his full story in this widely acclaimed instant bestseller: the championships, the bosses (including The Boss), the rivalries, the struggles of being a Latino baseball player in the United States, and of maintaining Christian values in professional athletics. He discusses his drive to win, the secrets behind his legendary composure, what it's like to run up to that mound with the game--or the season--squarely on his shoulders.

His pre-Internet village as if from another century. Didn't speak English, never been on a plane, never heard of Babe Ruth. He came from nothing and ended up on the mountaintop. And the great thing is that after reading this book you know he's just what he seems, a special man. A generous spirit. Kind. But more too, perceptive and wise. He's quiet, but it surprised me how tough he is. Read the Cano stuff. Mariano Rivera, the ultimate modern Yankee. What a story. I received it as a gift. Perfect for this Yankee fan.

No Game Greater than Baseball By BookBob This book covers a man's journey from hardship, toil and heartbreak on a small fishing boat in Panama to rising as a star pitcher with an infamous team in the Major Leagues. It reminds me why I love the game so much. A game where anyone - no matter their back ground in life can demonstrate greatest . It is another story of America and it's favorite game: A tale of a kind hearted, religious, and humble man's rise to greatest. Rivera was signed by the Yankees at age 20 when he was discovered playing on local teams in Panama. He developed and rose to invent a pitch known as the "cutter" - almost impossible to hit. His talent carried him to a long and successful career. Some may believe this book to be "sugar coated" (not typical of the scandalous books of today), but I found it to be refreshing, and it has sparked my interest in baseball this season. A story of a simple man's opportunity to rise to unbelievable heights - a story only found in America.

Story about a man who despite not being too old already became a legend By Helpful Advice ‘The Closer’ is recently released autobiography of Yankees legendary reliever Mariano Rivera in which he shares with fans a story of his life and greatest love – baseball.Rivera, born 1969, besides being one of the players that marked baseball history was also special due to his origins – born in Panama, in a family of humble fisherman he was perfect symbol of American dream come true. The beginning of his career resembles some Hollywood movie, Rivera’s thinking about working as a mechanic until been found out by Yankees scout. Back then he didn’t know to speak English, he didn’t have his own glove and Babe Ruth was name that didn’t mean anything to him.His baseball career started in Tampa and will end him becoming thirteen-time All-Star, a Yankees icon for time to come.In his book, that in my opinion is a bit too short with its 300 pages, besides all the expected things that Yankees fans are certainly eager to read, a reader can find numerous behind-the-scenes stories about the team managers and owners, about his teammates, rivalry with other players and teams, and probably most important, about his struggling to be different sportsman who managed to preserve and cherish his values and beliefs, not forgetting about his origins.Rivera was finding strength in Clara, who he knew practically his whole life, and the other beloved ones which helped him going through even the saddest times of his career; in ‘The Closer’ Rivera speaks about his desire to win, his composure that became his trademark along with his cut fastball. Therefore, if you like baseball and especially if you’re fan of Yankees Rivera’s book is absolute must-read which tells a story about one special man and his dream, that speaks about a man who despite not being too old already became a legend.

"In THE NINTH WIND, Moses Siregar takes readers to a fascinating new world where politics, magic, and adventure mingle in exciting and profound ways. If you like fantasy, you'll love this!" --NYT Bestseller David Farland THE NINTH WIND SPEAKS FOR THE DEAD … The Ancestors whisper of rebellion, their breath a cold blue wind in the forests and hills of Andars. The Rezzian occupation lingers, dragging the folk of the hills through bitterness and despair. Three siblings stand ready to challenge the Kingdom of Rezzia. Their fates have long been seen by the primordial Orns: one by Angst, one by Fidelity, one by Wrath. Idonea searches the dark wood to master the magic of the three sacred trees. Skye pursues omens to lead his shield-brothers to victory over Rezzia's legions. As armies battle for control of the Andaran hills, Dag calls out so that he may become as impenetrable as Altrea, allowing nothing to bend him, or turn him, or break him, so that he may stand and defend his kin. The ten gods of Rezzia and their lions stand in his way. The Ninth Wind is the long-awaited return to Moses Siregar III’s award-winning epic fantasy series, Splendor and Ruin. Drawing on Norse, Greek, and Indian mythologies, the Ninth Wind is a tale of betrayal and retribution, of gods and sages and witches, of fearless journeys and magical awakenings. It is a tale of honor, devotion, and valor. An adult tale of the children of wind and wood. ________ "... I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy of The Ninth Wind by Moses Siregar, a terrific Indy writer who I think is going to blow up big when this comes out. A top tier epic fantasy from him." --Jonathan Wood, author of NO HERO

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I particularly like how different magic/belief systems work together By Bryan I have been waiting for this book for a LONG TIME. When I finally got my hands on it I promised myself to talk it slow and not read more than a flew chapters a day. Of course I finished it sometime that night! I just couldn't help myself. I had high expectations for this book and the author met all of them! I particularly like how different magic/belief systems work together. The treated not like separate systems, but as different part of the same tapestry with each one connecting to the other. I still have a lot of questions, but I am sure that they will be answered in a later work. I can't wait for the Gods divide.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Are you brave enough to go where the villains are people, too? By Winchester13 When you pick up The Ninth Wind, what you may not realize is that you're getting not only a rich, detailed, fantasy world to dive into, but a thoughtful social and spiritual commentary as well. This book is not simply a gratuitous fantasy full of magic and quests (and I've read those, and nothing wrong with that at all). Unless you're trying very hard to keep your frontal lobes under lock and key, The Ninth Wind will make you think. And re-think. Seriously, I've read a metric crap-ton of fantasy, and not much of it has made me contemplate anything beyond the plot at hand. Impressive. On some level, Siregar's characters are archetypal (which I like), and yet on another level he breaks from tropes. I think the most important theme, with all his characters, is that even though there are people whose goals seem detestable, whose actions make the reader uncomfortable, the author is able to present these with the rare insight that there truly are no villains. The motivations of each character are clear (except in cases where Siregar wishes to make them mysterious), and the reader can see how their actions are perfectly reasonable given their cultural background, even if those actions are at cross-purposes to other characters' goals. A point is being made here, and (in my opinion) it is that we need to begin recognizing the humanity of people all over the world, no matter how strange and different they may seem to us. That each of us is, to some extent, a product of our environments, and it is very easy for us to say what other people “ought to do” without having lived the exact same life that person has. This was probably my main takeaway from this book: the idea that everyone, everywhere, is doing what they think is right. It’s hard to hate even the “villains” with this knowledge in mind. Branching off from this notion, is another, more uplifting ideal, and that is, for example, in the figures of Rao and Lucia, leaders of the two respective nations of Pawelon and Rezzia, that there are still people who are able to see beyond the constraints of their social/religious heritage to greater patterns that affect not just one people, but all peoples. And that they not only are able to see this, but the take action, at great personal risk and typically the disapproval of their nation’s leadership, to do what they feel is the right thing. In the case of The Ninth Wind, this is often attempting to promote peace when everyone else is chomping at the bit for war. This book opens in the mountain territory of Andars and shows the betrayal and massacre of a people by the military of the neighboring kingdom of Rezzia. As the Andarans recuperate from their losses, Skye and his sister Idonea each vow, in their own separate ways, to be ready for the Rezzians next time. Skye through being the spirit of his Tria, the Andaran three man fighting unit, and Idonea through the forbidden magic of the volwa.Meanwhile, while there is a tenuous peace being held between the kingdoms of Rezzia and Pawelon, thanks to the efforts of their two leaders Queen Lucia and Rao, the Rajah, others among their respective leadership groups long to return to more traditional ideals, and those don’t include peace. These two heads of state have to negotiate the tricky waters of making their own people happy without starting another war like the one they scarified so much to end in The Black God’s War, the first book of this series. There is, of course, a journey, and our Andaran friends travel to seek support from Pawelon, should Rezzia become aggressive again. The religious leaders in Rezzia, not thrilled with having a woman leading the military in Queen Lucia, are actively trying to find a reason to return to Andars and bring the gods of Lux Lucis to “those heathens in the North”, as it were. I should stop here so as not to spoil the plot, suffice to say there is now a race to see if the right minds can be convinced to keep Andars and Rezzia from going to war. There are a number of other things going on, of course. Skye is trying to handle his spiritual role, and things are not going as well as he’d hoped. Idonea is growing in her magical abilities and is faced with successively more difficult decisions about what is right to do with her power. Queen Lucia wants peace but is being heaped with mounting pressure for battles in the name of her nation’s gods.Much like The Black God’s War, events will not go the way you assume, I don’t care how much fantasy you’ve read. Siregar will have you undecided until the final moments as to what the outcome will be. It is all both hopeful and wonderful, and tragic, much like the real world. The setup is perfect for the third book, and I do hope the author is scribbling away as we speak. But if there is a long wait, it will be my pleasure to go read the first two books again and get reacquainted. If you’re looking for something that will challenge your brain and your sense of certainty about humanity, all wrapped into a textured, tangible fantasy world, just do yourself a favor and one-click this book right now. Do eeeet.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sprawling Epic Fantasy World Building By Kenneth B. Soward NO MAJOR SPOILERS.Very happy to give this book a solid 4+ stars. A little long, but charged with great world building and philosophical weaving that will make an impression on you for days after you are done.As some other reviewers noted, it's quite apparent the author has spent a great deal of time building this rich world. The Andars, a place of forests, mountains, and magic, where various types of trees are conduits to specific powers. The relationship of the volwa (a kind of witch) to the woods and people of Andars, and the fact that the volwas are actually shunned by the very people they are sworn to protect. There are also the lands of Pawelon (full of sages) and Rezzia (people given power through the worship of their ten gods) revisited as our protagonists try to keep the Rezzians off their land and stop a war they know is comingThere are some amazing lines in this book. Among them, "The Ninth Wind told me, your life and death are a perfect expression of one time and one place, of one fantasy, one journey, one droplet among the countless dreams in the eternal starry sea."The plot has moments of brilliance although at times gets a little drawn out. Saved, though, by the author's weaving of philosophy and mythology into his world building.Strangely enough, I rather enjoyed revisiting with Rao and Lucia (characters from the prequel - The Black God's War) and felt more tied to them than I did the three main Children of Andars, Skye, Dag, and Idonea.I think this is because the Andars characters were written with a good deal of what I thought was over emotion or misplaced emotion. And the idea that the Andars folk had very strong community and personal values, yet still held secrets from one another because they didn't trust their own brothers or sisters (emotionally) to handle the information. As outcasts or "wildlings" I would have liked to see the Children of Andars be more honest and raw. I guess at times the Children of Andars, even the adults, seemed a lot like ... well, children. But they were innocent, lovable, and brutal at times in their strength and passion, and I'm sure these characters will resonate with a good many readers of epic fantasy. All that being said, there's a lot of brilliance at play here. The author has set some serious events in motion, a great story and plot leading into the next book which includes some amazing interplay between Rezzia's Ten Gods, and Wrath, a sort of dormant goddess of the Andars people. The sages of Pawelon even get in on the action, which is a nice little twist. If you enjoy sprawling epic fantasy, you will enjoy The Ninth Wind.

Violent crime is unusual in 1960s Montgomery, Illinois, a small industrial village just outside of Chicago. If something illegal occurs, the village’s size limits the number of suspects police chief John Rively must consider.

When the murder of a nineteen-year-old girl rocks normally quiet Montgomery, Rively quickly realizes this isn’t an ordinary case. Although a suspect was seen with the victim before her death, none of Montgomery’s residents seem to know who he is. Even the reason for death is unclear.

As Rively and his deputy Makay investigate, a series of suspicious events strike the village, all pointing toward a clever and careful killer who delights in causing fear and unrest. Faced with frustration at every turn, Rively begins to doubt his own judgement.

A burgeoning relationship provides Rively with some relief from the pressure of the investigation, but that pleasure turns to fear when it becomes apparent the killer has been watching Rively closely and has his sights set on the police chief’s romantic interest. Now, Rively finds himself personally involved in one of the most puzzling and murderous cases of his career. If he fails, he’ll lose so much more than an arrest.

It was really good but this book, for only being the 2nd book in a series, this book was totally AWESOME! It had me on the edge of my seat--it was really hard not to skip to the end and just find out who/what/why...!Seriously...if you want to try something different (and this is just me because that chapter had me looking over my shoulder): when you get this book, read chapter 36 first..THEN read the book. Yeah...you will totally not want to put this book down. The twist was just as awesome. I am looking forward to the next book.I dont know what else I can say w/out giving away the plot--Im excited to talk about it! LOL

I eagerly await the release of each book in the series and not once have I been disappointed. This book is just as fabulous as the four that preceded it full of twists and turns that you never see coming. It has plenty of laughs some romance and just the right amount of suspense.I cannot wait to see what Ms O'Connor has next for Xavier and Vic because i just loves these characters and the entire ramshackle group.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bravo! By Kristina Stutts Hats off to Liza O'Connor! This story is captivating from the first page. Liza's attention to detail is astonishing and it leaps off the pages. I loved this series from the beginning and this latest installment didn't disappoint. I loved the description of Cannon. Is he baby or is he part dog? Vic's cleverness continues to shine brightly alongside his counterpart, Xavier. I can't wait to gobble up the next in this series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love this book!! By LLB Pack of Trouble is a pack of excitement.1st Vic almost died while birthing a large cannonball (aka baby). She get a cesarean by a doctor who had never performed one before. Then she outwits Xavier. Sometimes chasing ladies is not the easiest way. Sometimes you just need lots of newspapers.Since neither Xavier nor Vic has a clue what to do with babies, lots of horror or humor occurs. (Depend on how you see matters). Finally they return to England with Cannonball & staff.Only a few hours after arriving Vic discovers the First Minister’s secret and a resentful x-staff member nearly kills her. You’ll never suspect the person who finds her. And that’s just the first half of the story.Liza O’Connor does it again! Fun, interesting historical facts, such as baby bottles killed a great deal of babies, and the multiple mysteries needing resolved will keep you reading from beginning to end.

Well Written, Well Told Story By josie Durand When I was asked to read a review copy and write a review for Willard Thompson's newest novel, Their Golden Dreams, I jumped at the chance. I have followed Thompson's literary career for the past 10 years and have watched his work evolve into some of the best prose and story telling in contemporary fiction writing today. Writing a trilogy and family saga, his first book, Dream Helper, begins with the story of first Indian baptized at Mission Santa Barbara during the Spanish period of California history. The saga continues with Delfina's Gold, which moves into the Mexican period of California history before statehood. His 3rd novel tells the story of California statehood and the beginning of the American period of California's rich history. Thompson tells the history of California through his captivating and engaging characters, always well drawn and defined, as well as many historical figures of the period, who make cameo appearances along the way, bringing history to life. These books stand alone, but the reading experience is enriched by reading all 3 novels. The opening chapter of each novel places the reader back into the final scene of the previous novel, but then quickly moves forward into the new story. Their Golden Dreams tells the story of the California gold rush, but it is not a gold rush story, but rather a story centered around all the different people who came to California to follow their dreams and what happened to them once they arrived during the often turbulent times. The story has many emotional moments, especially for those who know his characters and can feel the injustices of the time. The story moves from California to France and then back again. As a reader I wanted more, as a professional, I appreciate the clean style Thompson employs to let the characters tell the story, while he, the author stays out of the way. This book left me wanting more. I hope there will be a book four. Josie Durand reviewer.

Californios meet the Gold Rush By R Yull I've waited a long time for "Their Golden Dream" to come out and immediately ordered it In keeping with the beautiful old Californio tales of Mr. Thompson's previous books, Dream Helper and Delphina's Gold, Mr Thompson skillfully spins the story set in that budding era of our beloved California with romance , jealousy, rivalry, and the tough Western spirit of the day and clashing of cultures. He builds the romance of that time around points of history a period of time so unique and extraordinary. You feel you are with those early Californios as you become engrossed with the story. I love Mr. thompson's writing he's a suburb story teller. We are lucky someone is dedicated to writing these historical novels which are set in those early years when it was a land of extraordinary beauty, adventurous people and at the cusp of a whole new country. But Mr. Thompson does not forget the hardship of the time, the mistreatment of the Mexicans and Indians and the disrespect for these proud people and their ranchos. This book is particularly interesting in that the timing is around the gold rush when all hell broke loose in California. The once sleepy ranchos and easy pace of the inhabitants were about to be turned upside down. It is a gift of a fine writer to tell a story of a fictional life but done so well by the incorporation of many historical events and people that one almost thinks it is a true account. Mr thompson's 3 books belong together in every Californian's library.

By tami I have certainly enjoyed the opportunity I have had to read a advanced, review copy of Willard Thompson's novel Their Golden Dreams. The third in a trilogy it does not requre the previous novels to have been read but the series is more enriched by having the other 2 books under my belt---A deeper emotional connection to the characters from the start. I enjoyed the "voice" of this book as it is told from several differing character perspectives as events unfold---some overlapping, some separate but as you place yourself as a reader in the "shoes" of the characters you feel as though you are sharing the experiences with them. I often found myself vocalizing my emotions as I read, crying silent tears, cheering audibly or loudly proclaiming my dissatisfaction with various outcomes in the story! The book is an easy read, well paced and satisfying--great for a trip/plane read or a days escape on the beach read--- warning: Do not attempt to read this chapter by chapter and expect to be able to finish a chapter and put it down---WILL NOT HAPPEN! This author knows how to keep you engaged and coming back for more! So heads up--once you start you won't want to put it down until it has finished...and even then You will be wishing their was another chapter and you will be dying for the next book!( here's hoping there is one!)
