About the Author Byron Ayanoglu is a writer of many hues. Memoirist, travel columnist, cookbook author, film-scenarist, playwright, restaurant reviewer, novelist. He has published the perennial best-selling Thai cookbook Simply Thai Cooking (Random House, 1995; reissued by Robert Rose, 1996 and re-released three times). His most recently published novel is A Traveler's Tale (2013). Prior to that, Istanbul to Montréal, was simultaneously published in a Turkish version in Istanbul; a very popular memoir Crete on the Half Shell (HarperCollins, 2004; published internationally; optioned for film), and a well-received satirical romance Love in the Age of Confusion (DC Books, 2002). Widely traveled, Byron speaks five languages and lives in the Laurentians in the summer and somewhere snow-free in winter.

Though the word "tasty" does not seem to jive with the title, it is very appropriate in this case. Mr. Ayanoglu has served up, in his sweeping novel, a most carefully concocted blend of history, culture and the ignominy of the human condition. And he does so as to touch on every taste the literary palate can wish for. As well as a world class chef, Byron Ayanoglu might also qualify as a first rate pilot. The luxurious magic carpet ride he invites the reader aboard travels in the sweetest, most comfortable style over the rocky and gritty terrain of our human experience. We feel all the turbulence and danger, but we know we are safe in the hands of a master storyteller. And pilot Ayanoglu brings us in for a satisfying landing after having served us an epicurean meal of the senses and sensibilities. A taste of a world far different than most of us have ever known. Kudos to Mr. Ayanoglu on his most absorbing dish yet. Do not miss FRESH BLOOD. It is a literary feast! Michael Levy

The double plotline was a neat twist -- the mysterious "editorial assistant" chapters felt like something from a distant Poe story ... but what was most captivating was the story of Maria and her muse friends. Ayanoglu really knows Greece (historically and through the present moment) and skillfully couches Maria's life in hints of Greece's political turmoil and changing landscape -- always keeping his character front and center. Ever the master chef, Ayanoglu's meals throughout were so mouth-watering I was hoping to look up and find my own table groaning with gustatory Greek delights. Not only do I want to read more of Ayanoglu's writing, I want to go back and savor the Greek classics.

There are two story lines, each compelling, and interwoven in alternating chapters. Also, as it turns out, the main story takes place in a topical part of the world – Greece. The book explores the complexity of the Greek culture, politics, male machismo/female submissiveness, rich vs poor, submission and uprising. I was rooting for the main character from the start, traveling by her side on her journey from childhood to old age. Maria’s my new heroine and will be yours too.
