Packed with drama, humor, the lore of American Indians and Tibetan Buddhists, plus unforgettable characters, this book is a dazzling tour de force and a deeply moving story. An unlikely trio comprised of the Shoshone Indian Asie, a Tibetan nun, and Sir Richard Burton—the famous soldier and explorer—flees from the Utah Territory to California in 1862. The Destroying Angel of the Mormon Church, Porter Rockwell, pursues them relentlessly. The journey is packed with colorful characters, including a fledgling journalist named Mark Twain. In the end Asie discovers why he was named the Rock Child, what it means to be a man of color in America, what spiritual path will nurture him, who his people are, and the strength of love. Reviews “Blevins has stated his aim is to write ‘mythic novels of the American West.’ He meets that goal in The Rock Child. The voices shift between an Indian-Anglo musical savant; Sun Moon, a virginal Tibetan nun shanghaied into American prostitution; and Sir Richard Burton, real-life explorer, linguist, and Arabian Nights translator. “Joining Burton in rescuing Asie and Sun Moon from a dreadful fate is Mark Twain, a comedic catalyst that surprisingly few historical novelists have thought to exploit. Like Twain, Burton is well drawn. He’s a cultivated, Sean Connery-type sinner who feels badly about his appetites, and the picaresque passages told from his perspective enliven this ambitious narrative.” — Library Journal “A colorful novel set among the Mormons in 1862, featuring such real folks as Sam Clemens, Sir Richard Burton, Brigham Young, and Porter Rockwell, by the author of Stone Song, Win Blevins. “Half-Indian Asie Taylor, a musical prodigy who has been accepted into the Church of the Latter-day Saints, drowns when his delivery wagon is overturned in a flash flood. He experiences an out-of-body experience, returns to life, and is amazed to see the scarred but beautiful face of Sun Moon above him. Sun is a Tibetan Buddhist nun who was kidnapped in Asia and shipped to America to be sold into prostitution. Tarim, the tavernkeeper who bought her, expects to resell her for a hefty sum. “When Porter Rockwell, a Mormon known as the Destroying Angel buys Sun Moon, he attempts to satisfy his lust. Frustrated by his inability to do so, he disfigures her face. Sun Moon flees and falls in with Asie, who has decided to go in search of his origins and the meaning of his Shoshone name, Rock Child. Meanwhile, Rockwell is in pursuit of Sun Moon, determined to kill her—and anyone who gets in his way. “Tibetan-speaking Sir Richard Burton, a brilliant opium addict, is in Salt Lake City to persuade Brigham Young to form a separate Western Confederacy. Burton saves Asie and Sun Moon from Rockwell and joins their quest. For a while, Brigham Young gives them sanctuary from Rockwell, though Rockwell later follows the trio to San Francisco. “The climax would satisfy the Buddha himself as his teachings resoundingly bring the murderous Rockwell to heel. The historical detail serves a charming treasure.” — Kirkus Reviews “‘Life is a flabbergaster,’ says Asie Taylor, hero of Win Blevins’s The Rock Child, a story that will flabbergast every reader who opens it. This is a rich, funny, fascinating, meaningful, and memorable novel from the author of that incredible masterpiece about Crazy Horse, Stone Song.” —Rocky Mountain News “Win Blevins–that master yarn-spinner–has done it again with The Rock Child. A wonderfully wild one which you don’t want to miss.” — Tony Hillerman “Win Blevins displays an antic imagination, not only in mingling actual and invented characters, but in melding gritty action-adventure with metaphysical musings.” — Dale Wasserman, author of Man of La Mancha “Win Blevins’s new book is a risqué and veritable romp through the history of the Old West! Highly enjoyable reading! —Clyde M. Hall, Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Judge

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Rock Child By A Customer This book is a first person account of a perilous journey taken across the wild west. What makes this book unique is the company the teller keeps. A half breed of unknown origins is the teller, and he is in the company of a Tibetan nun whom he has fallen in love with, and a spy for the British--who's secretly practicing a 'heathen' religion! If you like westerns...try this one! It's a western with a twist!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "Flabbergaster" By Munir I found this novel a delightful and interesting read. The inclusion of Buddhist spirituality, an amazingly international array of characters (even a Chinese Muslim (Uighur) tavernkeeper), and emphasis on the Native American experience, make this novel deeper and more meaningful than most other novels set in the American West. Though the plot is intriguing, the novel is at its best in depicting its colorful and diverse characters (Taylor, buoyant half-Indian, with a passion for music, who pairs up with Sun moon, beautiful Tibetan nun)and settings, from a Digger Indian village to Mormon Utah. Despite its realistic depictions of the racism and violence of the period, the story remains light-hearted and humorous. Sir Richard Burton, Nile explorer and drug addict, was particularly enjoyable. It would have been more interesting if his Sufi beliefs were explored a bit further, but of course he was somewhat of a side character.

Awesome and *original* story line, interesting historical facts, and wild adventure. This is the first book I've ever read by Blevins, and now I can't wait to order his other books, pronto. Buda, Ottoman Hungary, 1599: Yasamin, the naïve daughter of an Ottoman bureaucrat, finds herself trapped in an arranged marriage to the son of the powerful governor of Buda. She is unprepared for the gossip and scheming rampant in the palace but realizes she faces more than petty jealousies when someone tries to drown her in the baths on the day before her wedding. An unearthly menace lurks in the palace corridors, and the one person able to protect Yasamin is a soldier named Iskander, who seems to appear whenever she needs him. Charming and confident, he is nothing like her new husband, but trusting either of them could be a deadly mistake. Berlin, Germany, 1999: Adam Mire, an American professor of history, discovers a worn, marked-up copy of Dracula. The clues within its pages send him on a journey across the stark landscape of Eastern Europe, searching for a medallion that once belonged to Dracula himself. But a killer hounds Adam’s footsteps, and each new clue he uncovers brings him closer to a beguiling, raven-haired woman named Yasamin Ashrafi, who might be the first of Dracula’s legendary Brides. Adam has an agenda of his own, however, a quest more personal than anyone knows. One misstep, and his haunted past could lead to death from a blade in his back … or from Yasamin’s fatal embrace.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Be Careful of the Shadows By Candice Carpenter This book is a masterpiece! J. Matthew Saunders is a craftsman, perfectly blending non-ficional and fictional history into a suspenseful, sensual, high intensity tale. The gentle ping pong between 1599 and 1999 are easily understood, followable and important in order to fully grasp the gravity of the current situations. The story was perfectly paced with mystery, seduction, gore, love, loss and triumph in all the right places. Saunders’ historical knowledge is evident and detailed, adding to the story immensely. It was a taste of Dracula I have never had from a perspective I had never considered.***The short chapter layout increased my reading speed which I greatly appreciated.***No matter if it is for the mystery, the history or a new take on an old tale, I highly recommend you purchase/read Daughters of Shadow & Blood-Book I: Yasmin and anxiously await Book 2 with me!

By Calandra Usher I blew through this book in two days, and it's not what I would call an easy read. At first the format annoyed me just slightly because I wanted more detail about one of the characters story, but then it jumps to another perspective and I had to just read a little more to get back to them... Suddenly it's two in the morning and I've been sucked into a world of historical adventure and I can't tell what is truth or fiction. It's a brilliant tactic to keep the story moving and the reader hungry for more. Mr. Saunders has created a beautiful, vibrant, entirely plausible version of history with fantastic characters and a twisting plot that keeps dancing until the last pages. Really looking forward to reading the next one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Woman's Point of View By The Bookend Family Review by: Stacy PalmI have a great fondness for historical fiction as it interests me in general. Add in a book a dash of horror, a bit of the paranormal, and a good percentage of thrilling adventure and you end up with one of the most entertaining and exhilarating books on my recommended reading list. Daughters of Shadow and Blood by J. Matthew Saunders did not disappoint, and in fact kept me riveted to the page until I had finished it.Not giving too much away, this tells the story of Dracula's Bride, Yasamin, and it encapsulated everything I hoped I would find in it's pages. A story about a strong woman in a time when she was not appreciated, and having to overcome obstacles or rather succumbing to obstacles that lead her to her current position. I really enjoyed this story and cannot wait for the next installment. This is the Brides' stories, not Dracula's. So while you may find him within the pages, his story is not the focal point, and I believe that is one of the reasons I fell deeply into this book. There is a strong mystery element to this book. As I've mentioned in other reviews I try very much to read very little about ARC's that are given to me for review. I want the surprise of what I'm reading. So going into this book I was not aware of the Bride element, or many other things about this book. The book itself is structured in a way that I found very conducive to read. Each chapter being very short in length and switching between several time periods. This allows the reader to ponder what the large story is and what scheme is in play, The more I read the more intrigued I became all the way through till the final pages when the pieces snapped into place.I believe the author did a fantastic job of delaying the surprises till the appropriate time, yet supplied the reader with enough of a carrying pace to keep us guessing. Overall I was delighted with this book and will be eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.

From Linkville Press: The perception that the World is spinning out of control is nothing new. England in 1840, at the start of Victoria's reign, saw change on an unprecedented level, with nothing seemingly sacred anymore. This groundbreaking novel shows how, in just a few decades, Britain witnessed the creation, acceptance and normalization of amazing feats of design, wealth, engineering, revolution, music, and new ideas from East End factories to West End Theatres. Cornwall, England's Southern tip was though still isolated, difficult to get to. The Cornish still did things their own way. Smuggling helped whole communities struggle from one year to the next. If London wanted them to buy into the industrial revolution, working longer hours under electric lighting for the good of Queen and country, they were prepared to. However they wanted something in return. They wanted the right to vote. Every man able to partake in a secret ballot and every vote to be counted. That is what they were demanding in return. Meanwhile, pianos were being mass-produced for the first time. Joff Owens didn't want to follow into the family smuggling business, nor did he care about politics. He just wanted to play music. By the 1860's London was the nerve centre of the new musical theatre, opium was legal and widely abused, and eligible voters doubled overnight. It was then the most tolerant capital in Europe, and men came from the USA, Russia, Poland, Italy and the Empire. Capitalists, Anarchists, Socialists, Communists, supporters of Women's Suffrage, they kept on coming, often straight into the mean streets of the East End. Joff Owens played piano for them all. Twenty years later, Victoria had been in power for nearly fifty years when Jack the Ripper prowled Whitechapel. By now the vote had been given to most men over the age of twenty-one. Unions and labour movements were legal, although gangsters still controlled huge swathes of urban society, making fortunes from lucrative gambling and burlesque venues alongside the legal West End theatres producing the very first working class heroes. Stars of the stage rose from rags to riches and were catapulted into the ranks of the powerful, equipped with the right to vote. The world was changing fast and one man played the soundtrack as it did so; Joff played for them all. 150 years later there is still a perception of a world spinning out of control. Although there is a choice, there is hope. There is always hope!

Historically accurate By wally parson I was very impressed with the historical accuracy both in the smuggling Cornish age and also in the various elements in the East End of London in the Victorian age. The story was well written and the content was well worth purchasing such a book. Please could we have more from this author.

By Purple Passion Gritty, brutal account of the struggles of individuals and communities in Victorian England. Starting in 1840 in Cornwall and continuing up to Jack the Ripper's nights stalking Whitechapel, the reader is shown the reality of life for the poor and destitute. The following quote from the book sums it up perfectly: "People weren't living; they were just surviving at best, but only just. They had no time to be loving families any more, to be there as their children developed. They were being weighed down with the seismic task of just making it through to the next day." Although I found this book to be extremely hard to read at times, it did have glimpses of hope for better days to come. Excellent reading for someone looking for the unvarnished history of a country in turmoil.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A definite Must read! By donal byrne A wonderful book, excellently written, full of surprises and brimming with revolution. The reader is taken on a journey from Cornwall at the height of its smuggling age to the seedy underbelly of Jack the Ripper's London, where the clash of emerging political ideologies in the second half of the 19th century spills from the opium dens and music halls out onto the streets to challenge the status quo.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was actually saddened when I came to the end.The scenes and imagery are vividly painted and will stay with me for a long long time. This is a definite "must read".
