Normally I get bored easily, especially with sequels By Tara Cash SPOILER FREE:We continue to follow Mack and Amber on their journey, trying to survive while in constant peril. Normally I get bored easily, especially with sequels. However, I absolutely love the dynamic between the main characters. There is a great balance of action packed, fight for your life and character development. I re read the first book for this series before beginning this one, and I must say I am impressed and intrigued in where this story is going. A rare sequel that holds up against the original novel. Five stars!

Tapping into post-apocalyptic science fiction novels provides excitement to my mundane routine. The sheer adrenaline rush and epic characters from the first Nano Z has definitely lead me back for more. The story takes off where the first novel ended never missing a beat and fulfilling my high expectations of an unpredictable thrill ride.My favorite scene was when Amber was determined to find Mack no matter what obstacles paved the way, it was touching, heart wrenching and unforgettable, it provided a major turning point to this epic chronicle of human endurance. Even with the hopelessness and the constant fighting to survive there were glimpses of how significant the duo meant to each other, this brought out the characters strength and their means to keep going. The nano-infested encounters and the Machiavellian antagonist presented unsavory obstacles and immoral conflicts towards not only the protagonists but also for his own recruits. The unique concept of this story definitely makes it a catalyst among its genre and well worth the praise.

The dynamic between Mack and Amber is very interesting to watch and develop throughout the course of the story, the different struggles they face with the undead shaping the choices they make during the progression of the novel. The different scenarios and tests they have to operate through on trusting others in a time where everyone should be making their best efforts to survive is very intriguing, to say the least. It was a great novel with a very interesting theme and I couldn't put it down, I finished the book in one sitting.

The Christmas story we know so well is really a compilation of accounts found in each of the Gospels. Although the four books present the event somewhat differently, each of them leads us on the Advent journey of preparation for Christ’s coming. Awaiting the Already takes us on a tour through the Gospel narratives, showing us what parts of the Christmas story come from which Gospel, and helps us to recognize that each Gospel writer invites us to encounter a fresh experience of the birth of Christ. This thematic Bible study is designed to be used by individuals and small groups during Advent. Each chapter offers questions for reflection and discussion, a brief prayer, and a focus for the week.

Sakornbut I used this study guide for and adult Bible study during advent, It was very popular with the group, but we were unfamiliar with the author. His emphasis on why each author chose to approach the beginning of Jesus differently was interesting, but the plus was the different levels of questions so that people new to Christianity and those with many Bible studies under the belt felt like they could find value in this study guide.

It explains the sending of the Holy Spirit after the ascension. It is simply saying that although God is here among us, we anxiously await His return.

"West Kensington Paranormal Detective Agency. Doctor Ravinder Shah speaking. No case too weird, no problem too bizarre. Strangeness a speciality. How can I help you?"

London Social Worker Rav Shah moonlights as a paranormal detective, aided by one of his clients and a Border Collie he rents by the hour. It was supposed to be a bit of fun: a search for truths out there; a quest for a life more interesting than the one that fate, destiny, and personal apathy had granted him.

But then a case involving a Yorkshire farmer and a herd of flying pigs leads him into a world darker and more dangerous than he’d ever dreamed.

The truth is indeed out there.

And it’s got Rav square in its sights.

With a metric s***load (equal to 2.2 imperial s***loads) of jokes, but also suspense and some true excitement. I eagerly await the next installment of the adventures of Rav, Jess and the professor ( and of course Reese must be there too, and maybe even poor lovesick Alan) I just hope it isn't seven more years until Jonny Nexus' next book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the terribly normal, self-effacing fellow with few practical skills but ... By Steven J Darlington Nexus brings us another classic British literary hero in the spirit of Bertie Wooster and Arthur Dent: the terribly normal, self-effacing fellow with few practical skills but a clever friend or two, in this case a professor who occasionally interrupts the narrative to go full-Sherlock-Holmes on things, and a sheepdog to handle the rough stuff. The only problem is reconciling the Hugh-Grant-but-Asian lead, Ravinder Shah and his lack of being a super-spy with what becomes a battle against a world-spanning extremely powerful and sinister force and to do so means falling back a little too often on farce, coincidence and outlandish luck, and the result is a see-sawing plot that goes up and down one too many times to be believable. It's a very British problem, really - Ben Elton runs into it in his early novels as well, and Rincewind got a lot more interesting when he had Archchancellor Ridcully or a psychic kangaroo to push him around. The avuncular professor and the dog don't quite carry the can and I wonder if a better idea would be to step away from the high action shenanigans, especially since there's a delightful subplot going on about unlikely lovers which suits very well our hero's actual talent of social work. Likewise, I wanted to know more about Shah's large and complicated Indian family and his history with the professor. Not saying cut the action altogether, but I feel like it could have been more Pride and Prejudice and less "...with Zombies". But the company it is reminiscent of - Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Ben Elton - show the quality of the affable, charming prose which gallops the story along nicely, and scratches the edge of the hopeful humanism that self-effacing human comedy does so well. So there's potential here; Nexus is only going to get better as a writer as he smooths out his problems with plot, so you might as well get in on the ground floor before you look silly.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A witty paranormal detective story with a very English feel By Sadhbhzilla This book is an entertaining, witty and imaginative paranormal detective story with a very English feel. Our unfortunate hero, Ravinder Shah, has to deal an increasing insanely absurd plot and a cast of friends and foes that could have stepped out of a Wodehouse book or even one of James Herriott's agricultural offerings. He is armed with just his brains, an absent-minded academic OAP, one unimpressed border collie and the sort of luck that would have even Arthur Dent feeling a bit sorry for him. If you are a fan of Pratchett or Aaronovitch's Rivers Of London series, or just love the dry, self-depreciating humour that the English do so very well, give it a go.

Farewell, Cowboy is a modern and hard-hitting novel by one of Croatia’s best-known writers. It tells the story of Dada, who returns to her home town on the Adriatic coast, and tries to unravel the mystery of her brother Daniel’s death. Daniel, although young, smart and popular, threw himself under a train in mysterious circumstances. In search for clues, Dada meets an array of eccentric characters and passionately falls in love with the young gigolo Angelo, who is a part of a film crew shooting a Western on the nearby prairie. Slowly and painfully she discovers all there is to know about her brother’s death, and how she has been betrayed by someone close to her. "Dazzling, funny and deadly serious, this perfectly pitched novel about the legacy of the Yugoslav war heralds the arrival of an exciting new European voice." Kapka Kassabova, The Guardian

By Peter Anastas This is a beautiful novel about coming of age in Croatia after the break-up of Yugoslavia, showing the impact and influence of American movies and music on post-communist youth. It is told with a vernacular freshness and an often heart-breaking poignancy.

In 1914, as rumors of war float across Europe, Edna Ferber travels to Budapest with Winifred Moss, a famous London suffragette, to visit the homeland of her dead father and to see the sights. Author Edna is fascinated by ancient Emperor Franz Joseph and by the faltering Austro-Hungarian Empire, its pomp and circumstance so removed from the daily life of the people she meets. Sitting daily in the Café Europa at her hotel, she listens to unfettered Hearst reporter Harold Gibbon as he predicts the coming war and the end of feudalistic life in Europe while patrons chatter. Then a shocking murder in a midnight garden changes everything.Headstrong Cassandra Blaine is supposed to marry into the Austrian nobility in one of those arranged matches like Consuela Vanderbilt’s still popular with wealthy American parents eager for titles and impoverished European nobility who have them to offer. But Cassandra is murdered, and her former lover, the dashing Hungarian Endre Molnár, is the prime suspect. Taken with the young man and convinced of his innocence, Edna begins investigating with the help of Winifred and two avant-garde Hungarian artists. Meanwhile possible war with Serbia is the topic of the day as Archduke Franz Ferdinand prepares to head to Sarajevo. While the world braces for disaster, Edna uncovers the truth―and it scares her.

Cafe Europa: An Edna Ferber Mystery (Edna Ferber Mysteries), by Ed Ifkovic

Review Set in 1914, Ifkovic’s so-so sixth Edna Ferber mystery (after 2014’s Final Curtain) takes the bestselling writer to Budapest, in the company of Winifred Moss, a British suffragette. The pair stay at a shabby hotel, the Árpád, where Edna can’t resist scrutinizing the other guests. She sees that Cassandra Blaine, a wealthy young American woman about to be forced into marriage with a European aristocrat, is not just spoiled but terrified; Cassandra’s murder sets Edna off to find the killer among the eccentric, suspicious characters hanging around the Árpád. The proceedings are enlivened by the antics of Harold Gibbon―an obnoxious but plucky reporter for Hearst’s sensational newspapers―but slowed down by excessive detail about what Edna and Winifred are seeing and eating. The feverish, doomed-operetta atmosphere is relevant, since Europe is on the brink of WWI. That the solution to the mystery relies heavily on international politics, however, diminishes Edna’s personal investigation. (Publisher's Weekly)

About the Author Ed Ifkovic taught literature and creative writing at a community college in Connecticut for more than three decades and now devotes himself to writing fiction. Downtown Strut is the fourth mystery in his Edna Ferber Mystery series for Poisoned Pen Press.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Budapest...in summer of 1914 By Jill Meyer "Cafe Europa", by author Ed Ifkovic, is the latest novel in his "Edna Ferber Mystery" series. I think there are five earlier ones, but this is the first one I've read. Now, I've jumped into mystery series before not having read the previous books and felt like I am missing "something", like the characters' back stories, but I actually found "Cafe Europa" pretty easy to get into. Of course, it helps to know who Edna Ferber was...I picked up this book because it is set in Budapest in that fateful summer of 1914. Hungary was the "junior partner" - as they thought of themselves - in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Budapest was a hotbed of spies - both homegrown and foreign. International business people were in the city, looking for investment opportunities, including the brokering of a marriage between a wealthy young American woman and a titled-but-broke Austrian nobleman. And there was one reporter, a "yellow journalist" from the Hearst syndicate, looking to write about the death-throes of the Empire. There was trouble on the southern lands of the empire and the Balkans were just waiting to explode.Edna Ferber was visiting the city with a British suffragette friend and became involved in the murder of another guest at their hotel. Ferber, in attempting to solve the crime - as well as a second that occurs soon after - is immersed in life the city. Ifkovic combines real characters with fictional ones, but it helps to have access to Wikipedia to figure out who is who. He puts a "List of Characters" in the front of the book.Good historical fiction both teaches and entertains, and it is certainly the case with Ed Ifkovic's "Cafe Europa". The book begins a bit slowly, but that time is spent establishing the characters and place. I think the reader should have an interest in WW1 Europe, but the mystery should keep almost everyone interested.

But I was intrigued to learn that its main setting would be Budapest during the late spring/early summer of 1914. I was also curious to learn that Edna Ferber, who had been a famous journalist and writer, would figure prominently in the novel. So, I set myself to embarking upon an exotic journey in a world long gone, in which international travel was largely the preserve of the wealthy and well-to-do.Edna arrives in Budapest with her friend Winifred Moss, a British suffragette, from Berlin, where she managed to escape from the smothering clutches of her mother. A mother who frets for her daughter's future, which she maintains should be with a husband and children. But Edna, who had over the previous decade, made a name for herself as a journalist and successful short story writer, knows her own mind and is unafraid to assert herself. Both her and Winifred become enthralled with the charm, wonder, and mystery of Budapest --- as well as fascinated by the old Emperor, Franz Josef, and the pomp and circumstance of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a nation living on borrowed time."Sitting daily in the Cafe Europa, [Edna] listens to unfettered Hearst reporter Harold Gibbon as he predicts the coming war and the end of feudalistic life in Europe while patrons chatter." Then there is a murder of a young, wealthy American woman (Cassandra Blaine), who had often frequented the Cafe Europa, and was expected --- through parental coercion --- to marry a cash poor old count. A count who was more interested in the enhancement of his financial status the marriage would bring him than in his future bride. As for poor Cassandra, her heart was with Endre Molnar, a handsome and dashing Hungarian who had been her lover and was now a prime suspect in her murder. Edna, however, who had gotten to know Cassandra briefly in the few days before her death, thinks otherwise, and "begins investigating with the help of Winifred and two avant-garde Hungarian artists."Ifkovic writes with considerable skill, displaying a deep knowledge and feel for the sensibilities of his characters and the atmosphere of Budapest and Hapsburg society. I admit to being utterly enthralled by the cast of characters in "Cafe Europa" and the way the drama played itself out. No spoilers here. This is a mystery novel that will keep the reader on his/her toes and --- perhaps like me --- completely fooled as to the identity of Cassandra's murderer. (By the way, Edna Ferber was a real person. Her father was Hungarian and had emigrated to the U.S., where Edna was born in 1885. Three of her novels --- "Cimarron", "Showboat", and "Giant" --- were later adapted for the Broadway stage and the silver screen.)

By Jeffrey Tretin Fascinating murder mystery set it Budapest shortly before the onset of World War 1. All the characters, including those based on historical figures are well drawn. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction should not miss this mystery. It gives you a feel for Budapest as well as for the tensions that existed between the Austrians and Hungarians in the empire. I've previously read a book by Ed Ifkovic and look forward to more. Once you start, you won't be able to put it down. Very clever ending which I won't spoil for you.

Harriet Cassidy discovered that monsters were real at the age of 14. When she burned them alive in her own home after they had killed her mother. Years later she uses the skills learned from her late father, a civil war veteran, to hunt down evil men and monsters in the old west. Years after her mother's horrific death her father meets his own demise. Blamed by her sister for his death, Harriet finds herself wandering the trail alone. No destination and no purpose in mind. Searching for shelter to get out of winter’s grasp, she stumbles upon the remains of a family that have been eaten and skinned alive. After observing the grisly scene, she knows no human could have done this and searches out the nearest town looking for answers and to get the family a proper burial. She finds the town of Stillwater. A mining town whose people live in fear of a reclusive mine owner and their only protection is an old indian fighter for a sheriff who has a green horn for a deputy. On arrival Harriet is stripped of her weapons and confronted by the mine’s hired muscle, for defending a young girls innocence. This is when those years of scraping with warlocks and demons comes in handy, and she makes short work of them with the help of Jack, a rugged woodsman who turns into a wolf on nights of the full moon. Not a whole day passes before more people turn up dead. With Harriets curiosity peaked she goes on the hunt for this unknown killer. She recruits Jack, and together they seek a mysterious indian tribe unsoiled by europeans, to find their answers. They find though that those answers may come at a cost, and what Harriet does find out may mean more to her than she ever would have imagined. “The Wendigo and the Werewolf” is a supernatural western and the first of a series. It contains elements of horror, fantasy, action, and a smidgen of romance.
