"LOTS OF LAUGHS AND A FEW WELL-EARNED TEARS A TIME-BOUND TALE WITH TIMELESS APPEAL Angela?s home life forces her to grow up too fast. A popular school leader and “closet nerd,” Angela responds by enshrining carefree fun as a virtue when it comes to the opposite sex. Bart Aikens, filmmaker, The Vampire’s Dance How does a good girl coming of age in 1950s Albany, New York, play the field when boys control the dating game? The boys who like Angela aren’t always the ones she pines for in her diary.  Angela is dismayed that boys look down on the girls they have pushed to go all the way.  She wants to avoid a fast reputation but yearns for no-strings-attached flirtations and slow dances with as many cute guys as she can juggle.  Angela confides in and treasures her emancipated, artistic mentor.  Sparks fly when her parents bar Angela from acting on her dating preferences.   The events of one summer night forever color Angela’s family relationships but cannot diminish her boy-crazy ways. The secret thrills in Angela’s Boy Crazy diary harken back to the days when Elvis was young and cell phones, computers, and the sexual revolution had yet to change American life. Reading Boy Crazy is like being a GoPro action camera in the life of a girl, getting to see through her eyes as she grows from child to young woman in a life filled with boys, men, happy times and tragedies, dances and historical events…this is life in the raw…Boy Crazy provides a refreshingly unique journey…Angela is aware and involved…I loved this book and the vicarious living it provided. Sherre Lovick, novelist, aerospace engineer, pilot, musician, dancer C’mon, let’s admit it. We’d look, if we could, at that diary of a lover, friend, or family member. We would. We want to know the secrets. We don’t look, of course, out of courtesy and politeness. But what if someone courageously offered us a look into her diary, into her life, her mind, her heart? I found the look Angela offered fascinating, entertaining, and moving. Now it’s your turn. Go ahead, take a look. You know you want to. Whether she is interacting with her family or just hanging out with friends, Angela’s humor captures your attention with her child’s view of situations. Her life is not always fun, though. She faces religious prejudice, bullies, and family members who often do not understand her. Her gutsy attitude carries her through these trials allowing her to emerge a stronger individual with a determination make a better life for herself.Ms. Weiss uses her own childhood diary entries to describe the challenges and successes of a young girl growing up in upstate New York in the 1950’s. Her character development is excellent. Not only does the author portray Angela’s élan vital, but she also gives glimpses into the difficulties faced by immigrant families during this time. Pictures from Ms. Weiss’ family photo albums give depth to the poignant story of Angela as she learns some hard life lessons. This book leaves you waiting for the sequel to find out what happens to Angela after she becomes an adult. I didn’t want the book to end.

The many old photos of real people and Angela's childhood paintings make the novelized diary seem very realistic. I enjoyed meeting her special friends and family members, as well as various members of the opposite sex. Reading about Angela's girlhood feelings and experiences growing up in a family of limited means. I often laughed at fun times and sometimes shed tears when serious themes emerged. While light-hearted, the book has substance and deals with social issues which emerged in later decades. Those growing up in recent decades can experience what girlhood used to be like. This historical novel provides a nostalgic view for those coming of age when life was simpler and different. I highly recommend this slice of 1950s life in upstate NY!

It appears she had many boy crushes and admirers as well. I did not think that I would get so interested in Angela’s day to day activities. But as I read the book, I would read some lines to my husband. He too was amused. Being that we both grew up in the late 50s we could relate to Angela. I hope there’s a sequel!!" I need to know what happened to Aunt Sara and the men Angela met as a grownup. cv

This book is designed to give science fiction writers the background they need in real science to make their fiction read like fact. World Building is a blueprint in words, calculations, tables and diagrams to help writers transport readers from one world to another. With Stephen Gillett's help, you'll be on solid ground, no matter what kinds of worlds you create for your science fiction. World-Building explains science to help you make your fiction plausible. You'll give your worlds the pull of gravity, aware of the effects on inhabitants and the planets themselves. Mix elements and build planets with chemically credible, geologically accurate characteristics—and anomalies—that affect those who live there. Create planetary "engines," convincing atmospheres and fact-based weather patterns. Colonize a truly weird world: ancient Earth. Explore our neighboring planets and their satellites for SF possibilities. Light and heat your landscapes with the right types of stars. See how things might be on a "chloroxygen" world and other hypothetical places. In this book, you'll follow calculations, read tables, view diagrams, learn what forces are at work in the universe, and see how you can harness them to give realism to the fantasy in your storytelling. World-Building is a blueprint in words, filled with facts to help you write believable fictions that transport readers from this world to another... of your making.

Amazon.com Review Another in Ben Bova's series on Science Fiction Writing, here geologist and SF scribe Stephen Gillett helps you construct star systems and planets from the atoms up. While it may take you a little more than the proverbial seven days (well, six with rest), when you're done, your knowledge of gravity, weather patterns, cosmic mass and stellar patterns--in this universe--will be greatly enhanced.

About the Author Ben Bova is the author of more than a hundred works of science fact and fiction, including "Able One", "Leviathans of Jupiter" and the Grand Tour novels, including "Titan", winner of John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best novel of the year. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation in 2005, and in 2008 he won the Robert A. Heinlein Award "for his outstanding body of work in the field of literature." He is President Emeritus of the National Space Society and a past president of Science Fiction Writers of America, and a former editor of "Analog" and former fiction editor of "Omni". As an editor, he won science fiction s Hugo Award six times. Dr. Bova s writings have predicted the Space Race of the 1960s, virtual reality, human cloning, the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars), electronic book publishing, and much more. He lives in Florida.

91 of 93 people found the following review helpful. A Helpful Guide to Constructing Star Systems and Planets By Lawrance Bernabo "World-Building" is the volume in the Science Fiction Writing Series edited by Ben Bova devoted to constructing star systems and life-supporting planets. Stephen L. Gillett has a doctorate in geology, was the science columnist at "Amazing Science Fiction" and has written SF under a pseudonym. My doctorate is in rhetorical studies, so I am starting at ground zero when it comes to understanding or at least appreciating the mathematical equations for escape velocity, scaling tidal forces or Roche's limit. While this book thoroughly convinced me that I have no aptitude for writing hard science, I can see how it would be extremely helpful to anyone interested in being on a strong scientific foundation when it comes to writing their own stories.Gillett's volume has eight chapters: (1) Why World-Build? looks at the necessity of using real science to create the requisite sense of wonder in your science fiction writing; (2) The Astronomical Setting covers the important differences between planets and stars in general and gravity, orbits, seasons and tidal action in particular; (3) Making a Planet details how the formation of a planetary system impacts the resulting planets and the options for story writing; (4) The Earth looks at the interconnected aspects that make interesting variations possible with the home worlds you create because of plate tectonics, water and air, magnetic field, colors, etc.; (5) The Ancient Earth deals with avoiding the "Cenozoic Earth Syndrome" (creating an alien world by making a few slight changes on ancient earth) by better understanding our ancient past as an inspiration for creativity; (6) The Other Planet looks at the wealth of data we have accumulated from our deep space probes as another source of inspiration; (7) Stars and Suns looks at how such heavenly bodies can supporting interesting planets as well; and (8) Not as We Know It discusses differences in volatile content (e.g., wetworlds, nitroworlds, brimstone worlds) as a final means of providing major scope for variation in words.Hopefully this will provide you enough information to decide if "World-Building" will help you in writing your own Science Fiction. I appreciate that for some people this book does not go far enough, but certainly for the vast majority of us it gives us enough information that we will not thoroughly embarrass ourselves when it comes to creating new worlds for our characters to inhabit and visit.

29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Worth reading even if you're not a writer By A Customer Required reading if you're an aspiring SF Writer. This book provides the basic information needed to design an "authentic" planet that is scientifically consistant. Most of the equations are in sidebars so they can be easily located and entered in a spreadsheet making it easy to try out a variety of scenarios for your planet and its environment. The author has packed lots of information in a small book.If you find this book useful you will also find "Energies: An Illustrated Guide to the Biosphere and Civilization" (available from Amazon) equally thought provoking and just as useful. While World-Building takes a look at planets in general it does focus on Earthlike planets in particular. Energies takes a wide-ranging look at Earth itself(its biomass, climate, animals and technology) with extensive charts, graphs and equations and fills in some areas where World-Building is thin. The books complement each other amazingly well. In addition, both list other references and resources for additional research.

32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Unique in its beauty By Alex This is probably the best and only book that clearly states the current understanding of stars and formation/evolution of planets around them, in plain speech. The information is as extensive as it is scientifically accurate which is a great plus for an aspiring fiction writer who does not want to look over the countless pages of an Encyclopaedia Formulae on astrophysics. Besides the numerous formulas one needs to create a (scientifically) cohesive world, Gillett also gives many tidbits from the fiction writing over the course of time, allowing you to become familiar with the possibilities of several future technologies/discoveries. Also included are several studies of fictuous odd-ball worlds ( one is an ocean world filled with sulfuric acid). This book will likely be useful to the writer as well as the explorer within everyone.

The author follows three disappointed Confederate soldiers as they leave for home in Arkansas after the last Civil War battle in North Carolina. As the three friends travel the poor country roads back west, they are exposed to the ravaged South and most of the major problems of the early Reconstruction period. The men observe the ruined Southland, the burned homes, farms, and plantations. They encounter homeless whites and numerous bands of wandering, freed Afro–Americans, all poor and hungry. Cruel Union soldiers and lawless Rebel soldiers, including deserters, only make things worse. And very quickly, the travelers realize that a new force has developed in their beloved Southland. The Ku Klux Klan has begun to fill the lawless void in the South. The question — is the Klan an ally or an enemy? Earl Forrest, with a wife, Emily, and a small daughter in Helena, Arkansas, worries constantly about his small family and their welfare. Al Emerson meets a beautiful, young woman who was raped during the war. She has a black child. But in love, he swears to return to Georgia in the immediate future and marry his new love, Rachel. The third soldier, Murlan Skidoff, known to his friends as “Squirrel,” worries about his older mother, father, and older sister, Mavis, and whether they survived the war. And finally, a black Rebel, Jim Washington, befriended by the white Rebs, will join up with the men and become a dear friend as they move back to their homes in Arkansas. Jim wonders how his mammy, a slave cook on an Arkansas plantation, is surviving after being freed. The four men will definitely come to realize that the Reconstruction era is one of the darkest periods in the history of the Southern United States.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Jimmy and the gang are back! By Tator426 I loved this book! It picked up right where the 2nd book left off so you're thrown right into the action. Book 3 continues Jimmy's story and you delve a bit deeper into each of the supporting characters. Richard Brown writes in a way that is easy to read and provides a bit of humor in bad situations. The characters he creates makes you actually like them and care about them. The book is fast paced and doesn't let up. I found myself flying through the pages, even though I didn't want it to end. I read this book in 1 day and am eagerly awaiting the next installment! I highly recommend this series (and author) to anyone!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For Zombie lovers everywhere, a really great read!!! By Rebecca Barnes Continuing the journey of Jimmy, your typical nerd, Peaches, the ex-hooker, Ted, the gun expert, and Robbie, the cop, we find the gang on the road to New Orleans in search for Robbie's eight year old son. When they finally get there, they find the Big Easy overrun with hundreds of thousands of flesh ripping hungry fiends crowding the streets. Survival is key and the gang goes through many adventures until they get to their destination. This, the third novel in Richard Brown's The Dead Highways series, is probably the darkest yet, but I loved the grittiness and the savagry he put into this one. It's a gritty and savage World now, and the Author does an admiral job of taking you there, with visual description and great detail to describing New Orleans. I really loved this novel, I think you will too! If you haven't read any of the Dead Highway series yet, I recommend buying all three at once. I guarantee you will be glad, because this story os one of those I never want to stop. Fans of the TV show The Walking Dead will know exactly what I mean, you really get to care for these characters...it's not all about the Zombies! There are LOTS of Zombies though, so nobody will be disappointed, I sure wasn't! I loved these books and if you love really good Zombie fiction, you will too!!!
