A rich mosaic of the human experience, embroidered with colorful gothic elements like spell-weaving dwarves, love potions, magical bells and even a particularly monstrous dragon, "Tristan & Iseult" is the tale of a heroic knight from fabled Lyonesse who falls madly in love with his King's betrothed through sorcery. Neither Tristan nor his Queen-to-be can resist the magic that possesses them both, and they cannot help but fling themselves headlong into an affair that shakes the very foundations of the Arthurian world.More than a mere "love story," this is a philosophical exploration of the human soul. Are Tristan and Iseult really guilty of adultery? Do they have a free will? Do they truly love each other, or is their affair nothing but a sorcerous delusion? Is King Mark the villain of the story, or is this a tale beyond conventional heroism or villainy?Readers familiar with the Arthurian legend will quickly draw parallels between Tristan and Iseult and Lancelot and Guinevere, whose tragic love brought Camelot to its knees. Indeed, Malory cites Tristan (whom he refers to as "Tristram") as a knight of such prowess and nobility that he is second only to Lancelot himself--and a close second at that.If you are a dreamer, a hopeless romantic, this is the book you've been looking for.

Throughout my degree, and my previous highschool education, I've come across "Tristan and Iseult" in four different forms before Bedier's, and was so tired of the tale that I thought no one would breathe life into it again for me.Not so.Bedier's translation (which was then translated by Hilaire Belloc and completed by Paul Rosenfeld) has repainted "Tristan and Iseult" into a truly living piece of mythology. Presented with exquisite detail, and with portions of the story even my four previous readings had never uncovered, this is, I believe, how the tale was meant to be told. The achetypal doomed-romance, "Tristan and Iseult" is the well-known tale of the romance between those two lovers, born of a magical philtre, and doomed in the face of Iseult's marriage to King Mark. The age of chivalry practically shines from the pages, and the heart-wrenching story itself is a joy to read, with only a few bumps and jolts of prose along the way (likely, I imagine, translation difficulties). If you are at all interested in mythology, especially that of Arthurian theme or times, Bedier's translation of "Tristan and Iseult" is the one for you. You won't be disappointed.

Mercer "The Romance of Tristan & Iseult" is the tale of one of the earliest pairs of star-crossed lovers in literature, heavily researched and drawing from many versions of the story. Having come across the tale in many forms, from the opera "Tristan und Isolde" to cameo appearances in "The Mists of Avalon," this telling is refreshing and spirited. The authenticity of language, as well as the narrator's own action and moral interpretations make one feel that they are sitting near a fire in the great hall listening to a seneschal tell the tale of doomed love."Tristan & Iseult" is fast-paced and beautiful. It is also an invaluable tale to read as an example of the archetypes and symbols of the tragic hero, imbedded Christ imagery, woman on a pedestal, etc.

About the Author

Einar Ingebrigtsen

Einar Ingebrigtsen has been working professionally with software since 1994―ranging from games development on platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and the PC to the enterprise line of business application development since 2002. He has always focused on creating great products with great user experiences, putting the user first. Einar was a Microsoft MVP awardee from October 2008 until July 2015, which he was awarded for his work in the community and in the Silverlight space with open source projects such as Balder, a 3D engine for Silverlight. For years, Einar ran a company called Dolittle together with partners, doing consultancy work and building their own products with their own open source projects at the heart of what they did. Amongst the clients that Dolittle has had over the last couple of years include NRK (the largest TV broadcaster in Norway), Statoil (a Norwegian oil company), Komplett (the largest e-commerce company in Norway), and Holte (a leading Norwegian developer for construction software). Today, Einar works for Microsoft as a technical evangelist, focusing on Azure and advising ISVs, which meant giving up the MVP title. A strong believer in open source, he runs a few projects in addition to Balder, the largest being Bifrost (http://bifr.st), a line of business platforms for .NET developers, and also worth mentioning is Forseti (http://github.com/dolittle/forseti), a headless auto-running JavaScript test runner. Additionally, Einar loves talking at user groups and conferences and has been a frequent speaker at Microsoft venues, talking about different topics―the last couple of years he has mostly focused on architecture, code quality, and cloud computing. His personal blog is at http://www.ingebrigtsen.info. Einar has also published another book on the subject of SignalR Blueprints, by Packt Publishing.

A must have if you need to connect systems in real time By mario I'm a programmer in the .Net world since the very first release of the framework. I also adopted asp.net for my real-world projects abandoning the old asp framework used to create the older web application. Since then all the framework has evolved at an incredibile speed. Also the world has changed with a lot of New technologies and challenges to cope. Signalr is one of the most promising technologies both in web and "traditional" applications. This book is well designed and balanced showing all the opportunities and the employments of this technology. It's very well written with a lot of useful examples. Absolutely a must have if you're involved interconnecting systems in real-time.

At nineteen years, Johannes Brahms was a beautiful youth with delicate hands and slender fingers that belied their strength, a clear tenor singing voice, a smooth, beardless face and a slight build. Women swooned over his rich and beautiful head of golden blond hair that flowed down to his shoulders and framed his pale blue eyes, giving him an aura of innocence. Although he was not a tall boy, he stood straight and upright, and looked people in the eye when he talked, giving him an air of authority.Clara Schumann's hazel eyes shined brightly in direct opposition to the dark circles below them. Her wide mouth radiated an air of sensuality and her high cheekbones gave her confidence and competence Brahms had never seen in a woman before, and yet he was reminded of his mother, a younger version, as he remembered her from his youth. It seemed clear somehow that this woman had borne children, although he could not say why he thought that. Perhaps a fullness of the hips or her supreme confidence. At the same time, because of her directness, she reminded him of the women he had known by the docks of Hamburg.

Review I was completely caught up in this powerful, deeply emotional and heartbreaking story so much so that I often could not put it down. The characters leap off the page; the music sweeps and curls and tiptoes through the story, carrying plot and pacing with it at a compelling tempo. I came to know the Schumann house and its inhabitants intimately, and to care for them as real, breathing people. Row has done a wonderful job of capturing their human frailties, along with their talents and virtues, so they are fascinating, each in his or her own way. Row s novel not only sings; it shines like polished gold. --Kathryn Lynn Davis, New York Times bestselling author of Too Deep For Tears and Sing to Me of Dreams

A Nice Try Gone Wrong By R. james Tobin As an historical novel, this is fiction but, importantly, it is about real, prominent, and much beloved musicians. The seeds of Terry Row’s inspiration—or rather speculation--come from curiosity he shares with many about each of his three characters. Why did Robert Schumann hurl, not only himself, but also his wedding ring, into the Rhine? Did his beloved wife Clara—after she and he experienced one of the great romantic love stories of the century, fulfilled with many children—not only develop a strong friendship with the young Johannes Brahms but perhaps consummate that attachment with physical intimacy?Row’s book derives from these questions. He answers the last question in the affirmative, with fabricated details that, given those involved, especially Clara, are shocking even in the twenty-first century, in one scene particularly. The historical Brahms and Clara Schuman were very discreet—at the very least—about their relationship and Row imaginatively and dreadfully violates their privacy. There never, ever, would have been any documentation of such a scene as he presents it. Yes, this is fiction, but sometimes fiction on the level of a bodice-ripper.Aside from lurid details, Row strains credulity with respect to both the timing and manner he gives to such an intimate affair. Implausibly, and I find offensively, he has the thirty-four year old Clara dreaming and lusting after the twenty year old Brahms, and then seducing him, before Brahms had ever visited the Schumann household and met Robert Schumann, who would extoll Brahms’ music in print. This is not to say that Clara and Johannes may never have had a brief physical affair, and possibly even jointly parented Clara’s last son, Felix, born ten months after Robert was away forever. But surely Row could have done much better than this in imagining how it might have occurred. In his credit, Row does present a more plausible answer to my first question above. His narrative has Schumann discovering a packet of love letters shortly before his attempted suicide. If that actually happened, it might account for both the attempted suicide and the fact that Schumann evidently did not want to see his wife again after he was taken away.Something else in Row’s book is somewhat bothersome, however, and that is the (italicized) reveries of Schumann while in the asylum, in which he familiarly addresses the mistress from his early youth--before he and Clara fell in love. A recent biographer identifies the mistress by name--so she was real--and she evidently had given Schumann the syphilis which may ultimately have been the cause of his death. Schumann could well have had obsessive feelings of guilt over that early affair and its consequences, but the delusions Schumann experienced as his rationality became obscured were not of that person but rather of vague demons. All in all, a disappointing book.

Even though this is an old book, and there have been a lot of new discoveries in the many years since it was written, it is still a must have if you are related to the Alstons or any of the allied families.

Epic Adventure for Music Lovers and History Buffs.    The Book of Wisdom is a journey from the ancient Near East to yesterday's Dublin, a hunt for the very first song, and a quest to rediscover the bonds between religion and superstition, between history and myth, between art and reason, between love and hate.  A scribe fights to save his heritage from the Roman legion. A professor seeks atonement for his mistakes. Both men, scholars separated by millennia, seek a pathway to the divine, sacrificing all to protect an ancient melody that opens a door between the realms. But while the power is great, good and evil are hard to balance when heroes cannot tell magic from physics in a universe where both exist together. Men and women fight for what they desire most, believing it to be for the good, but how can one know what is true when science is also a myth?  And when a hero falls in battle, we pray that another will rise to take her place so that evil, if evil it is, will not overwhelm us all. Jerusalem, Palestine. 68 CE. Jacob ben Honi must fight to protect the woman he loves and the heritage of his people from the vengeance he brought upon them. He hides an ancient book of songs, then encodes its location on a Copper Scroll. Next, he sends this Scroll on an odyssey which will draw generations of seekers into its wake. The scribe’s ruse sparks a war waged across centuries, while he is left with a debt he must wait millennia to repay. Dublin, Ireland. 2011 CE. Lured by a woman and a song, Douglas Crenshaw deciphers an Arabic poem and uncovers an ancient melody. As his rivals close in, he rekindles a flame while facing the truth about his past. Conflict leads to murder as his team joins the hunt for the Copper Scroll. Yet when he finally confronts the woman of his heart, she reveals a secret from their past. He realizes he has been duped. The origin of an ancient song is no longer the only mystery he has to solve, and the answers, it seems, are just beyond his grasp. The Book of Wisdom is the first in the four-volume series, The Harmony of the Spheres. Book Two: The Sword and the Pen is scheduled for release in the Spring of 2016.

From Kirkus Reviews "A twisty thriller that proves to be a wily, if textually dense, adventure." - Kirkus Reviews

Review

"Jeremy Falcon is very intelligent in his choices and the plot and history alone are sweeping and great fun to read. I recommend this book for all fiction fans...even the ones who couldn't tell Bach from Beethoven. It's about music, but there is so much more than that. The Harmony of the Spheres series looks like it's going to be an amazing ride and I can't wait to be a part of it." - Katelyn Hensel, Reader's Favorite

A dense and lively read around (written) music's origins By Marcia Tiede This book is a little reminiscent of an Indiana Jones tale, though there is not a single character in the lead role -- instead there are two, separated by almost two millennia. The earlier protagonist is a hero figure, seasoned in the Roman legions, who returns to the Essene community of his childhood, in a time of fear and foreboding prior to the Roman attack on Jerusalem. Jacob ben Honi is also a talented singer and musician, a quick and sensitive learner, who was taught some of the secret mysteries of music and its power, going back to King David, but who fled after an episode of betrayal and tragedy. He has returned to face that legacy - as well as to see Rebekah, the woman he has loved since childhood. The contemporary lead character, Douglas Crenshaw, is a difficult academic, a music history teacher at Northwestern University, prone to bitter rants, whiskey, and impatience. He is obsessed with the recreation of the earliest music, deriving clues from archaeological digs and obscure manuscripts. This sought-for earliest music is framed in terms of the chain of knowledge from the classical world to the Western world via Arab civilization in Spain - all of which threads come together around a mysterious manuscript that his old flame Fatima, a professor of Egyptian origin, has found hidden in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Crenshaw is augmented in his mission to Dublin by his two "girls" - one his attractive and loyal-despite-all research assistant, and the other a brilliant and asocial Linux geek. The atmosphere of Jerusalem (a snakepit of rival factions) and its surrounds in Jacob's time is one of grim desperation, as they seek ways to preserve their heritage for any surviving generations. The contemporary story between Evanston and Dublin, with its range of characters from nefarious to quirky and eccentric, leavens the tone. Both protagonists present music as a cosmological force and key; the mystery manuscript is a link to that key and between the two stories, which, in alternating chapters, are stitched ever closer together.

Adamak This book was written so that it causes the reader to feel like s/he is now experiencing time as of the Common Era C.E. The book is divided into chapters so that one chapter is always entitled October 1, 66 C.E. and the next chapter is entitled June 20, 2011 C.E. and they continuously switch back and forth because the earlier time wrote about characters and activities that were important to music and the 2011 C.E. is about Professor of Musicology, Douglas Crenshaw. The earlier time features Jacob, who was a Judean, but fostered by a Roman officer and as a Centurion, Jacob ben honi, decided to give up his allegiance to Rome and return to being a Jew, which he was raised as a child. During his early years, he was musically inclined and studied music with the Essenes as music was one of their foremost practices. Jacob not only learned to play the lyre and flute, he also was a beautiful singer. Music being broken down into codes so that different sounds could be produced was practiced at that time. The later time features Professor Crenshaw of Northwestern University, along with two other famous men of Musicology and Professor Crenshaw believes that everything on Earth is the result of music and throughout the ages various cultures have worked with sound, coding it and attempting to produce sounds of nature and invention. He is cranky and impatient with anyone who says different. He has an assistant, a graduate Lucy, who helps him research. Recently a young woman, Pam Goddard introduced herself after one of his lectures, saying she has a Master in Applied Mathematics. Professor Crenshaw has just been fired by the University when he receives an invitation from Dr. Fatima Al-salem, head of Medieval Islamic studies. According to Crenshaw, music first began to be recorded on paper by the Spanish and Arabs and some of those early arrangements cannot be translated. Fatima has just received an ancient vocal arrangement, which no one can translate musically and she invites Crenshaw to come to Trinity College in Dublin to work on it. Trinity College is famous for having many ancient manuscripts. Crenshaw takes Pam and Lucy with him. Pam disagrees with Crenshaw about music being the basis for everything, but math is. However Pam’s ability with math, especially when writing for the computer, is most helpful. The vocal piece Fatima has, she hopes is one named “Cantilena de la Luz” that has always been rumored to exist, but no one has ever seen it.Now that is the crux of this story. But especially in the 66 CE era, there is much action because Rome is out to control Judea and has already conquered Galilee on its way to Jerusalem. Much of the history of this era, many readers already know or might be interested in it. In the 2011 C.E. period, although there is some action, it is filled with dialogues by Crenshaw while he explains music, how it developed, and how different tones are developed. Unless a person either has a background for this or wants to learn about it, it becomes boring. The book is well-written and it is whether the reader enjoys the content as to its appeal. I was given a pdf copy for an honest review.

By Bookseller80 Jeremy Falcon's "The Book of Wisdom" is both academic and adventurous as it takes readers from the hot desert sands of Roman-occupied Judea to the prestigious halls of a Dublin research library. It's two protagonists are Douglas Crenshaw, an unorthodox university professor who's made a name for himself obsessing about the ancient music of bygone eras; and Jacob ben Honi, a renegade Roman soldier who returns to Jerusalem to save his people from foreign attack. Both characters' journeys revolve around music and a mysterious manuscript—The Book of Wisdom—whose buried secrets hold the potential to both rewrite history and shake up the status-quo.This novel is fast-paced, dynamic and exciting, filled with intrigue and danger as its characters risk everything to uncover ever-larger truths. There is romance, suspense, friendship and betrayal within its pages. There are breathtaking panoramas of now-vanished landscapes brought magically back to life with the author's expertly-crafted prose. There is humor, irony and pithy observations about the human experience. The action scenes sparkle with the intensity of a roaring fire in the darkness. The characters are intrepid and interesting with strong motivations for doing what they do. The chapters end in suspense, leaving readers wanting to know more! And all throughout, the author seasons his writings with insightful observations about the evolution of music and its role in shaping civilization itself.Fans of Dan Brown should not miss reading this daring work by a first-time novelist. What a fantastic read!

Tenaya Creek Press 480 pages (est.) E-book Covers Swift 2 Swift, Apple's new language for app development, has been widely praised for its clean, safe, and feature-rich design. The language is poised to quickly replace Objective-C for developing iOS apps. Swift is now the 15th most popular language (Objective-C is #14, having sunk like a stone from #3). If you are serious about iOS app development, you should start learning Swift now. Although Swift at its core is a fun and easy-to-use language, it does have some aspects that are likely to be new to you. Like optional values. Its more sophisticated use of functions and closures. The new class-like data types of structures and enumerations. The sophisticated matching in swift statements. Generic programming. And the use of protocols as a substitute for inheritance in the new approach of "protocol oriented programming". And there are some complicated nuances that you'll occasionally run into that you need to understand. The initializing of new objects, especially when inheritance is involved. Type casting. Variations in function calling and the Swift compiler's intelligent response to the surprising variations allowed in closure syntax. What's the best way to learn Swift? You need a way to learn it that doesn't involve incomprehensible jargon and head-scratching convoluted language. Understanding Swift Programming is a book that has been carefully designed and written to introduce programmers (with at least some programming experience) to the new language. It has been crafted with clear explanations of everything about Swift, when possible in ordinary English with a minimum of technical jargon. Does it dump everything about a topic on you at once? No. It has a carefully layered organization, introducing you to essentials first and taking up a topic a second and sometimes even a third time to discuss further nuances. Is this a quickie book leaving out what you will actually need when you code an app? No. It offers complete coverage of all but the most obscure aspects of Swift. Does this just show you code without much explanation? No. As the title suggests, the goal is to help you fully understand the language, not just memorize code samples. Is this a book that you might read but then, as is common with many programming books, retain little of when you actually start coding? No. First, the book is organized so as to help you build up your understanding conceptually. It has an often light style, with over 35 cartoons that keep the mood informal and fun and aid retention. And second, at the end of every chapter, readers are invited to get a web browser and participate in the hundreds of exercises offered as part of the Hands-on Online Exercises. Studies have shown huge increases in retention when readers actively think in this way immediately after absorbing information. The book is inexpensive--with its 480 pages (est.) on an Ebook reader or 392 pages in its print version, compare its per-page cost with other books on Swift. A web site, understandingswiftprogramming.com, keeps track of (the still continuing!) changes to Swift and informs you of errors. The book covers the new Swift 2, including a 21-page chapter on Protocol Oriented Programming that we think is the most clearly written description of the new approach available anywhere. There's no risk. The Kindle version can be returned for a full refund if Amazon receives the request within 7 days. (Log in, go to Manage Your Content and Devices, select the book and then Return for Refund.) The print version can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. See the Returns Center. Understanding Swift Programming is more than a book. Its carefully crafted organization and writing, together with the Hands-on Online exercises, makes it a complete course for learning Swift, unique among what is available today.

I have used the heck out of it. I found it far exceeded my expectations considering the price. The book was also a refreshing book because it was not bogged down by having an Objective-C history. There are so many books that need to be re-written from scratch because the authors don't have the time to update them correctly. Most of the O'Reilly, Big Nerd Ranch, and Addison Wesley publishers had author's that did an awesome job with Objective-C books, but they are tomes and will be very difficult for the authors to just throw away all the material from the Objective-C days, but they are going to have to.You also get the Kindle version of this book free with the Amazon Matchbook program if you purchase the printed version. There is no code download and the online exercises are not worth going out to, but the book is definitely worth getting so you have something in your hands on Swift 2.0.It is a good cover to cover read as well as a great reference.

Thus far I've been happy with the way the book is organized, with the content, and with the explanations. I'm a seasoned developer, but new to the Apple world. I'll update this review when I get through reading the book.
