Passport To Hiroshima: The Unthinkable, Inspiring Journey of a Japanese-American Family Based on a True Story, by Toshiharu and Rita Kano

Review "Passport to Hiroshima is one of the most stirring books I have read. The book is very frank, going into both the good qualities and the faults of the characters. It recounts the horror of the bombing as only a family who was there can do. I highly suggest reading this book. It is of both personal and historical significance and is like nothing else you will read."   --Tracy Riva Books & Reviews"The way in which the story was written made me feel like I was there living through this with the family. It was very hard to put down; couldn't stop reading."   -- Cathrine Lamb, The Chipley Paper

It is a compelling real-life story that goes into detail about those that died, lost loved ones, and most importantly - those that survived the WWII Hiroshima bombing. The book is exquisitely detailed. I could really visualize the scenes and the people as if I was actually there. The description about the air right after the bomb fell physically made me nauseated. I had never experienced this before when reading any book. I must also mention, that I am a very picky reader. If a book doesn't get my attention within the first five chapters, I am just not motivated to continue. By the third chapter in this book, I was hooked. I couldn't put it down! The first initial chapters were background - laying the foundation so to speak. Once the book took me back in time to pre-War Japan I was entranced! The characters in this book took me through all the emotions - love, anger, loathing, delight, laughter, surprise, disappointment, sympathy, disbelief, awe, etc. Even though all this happened decades before I was even thought of, and I have never gone through as tragic an ordeal, I found that I could actually relate to what many of the characters were experiencing at times. I also like the mission for the book - peace. It is hard to remember bad things, but to forget can sometimes be worse because in forgetting,we doom ourselves to repeat history. I for one do not want anything like this to be repeated ever again. My respect goes out to the authors - one for taking the courage to write this book and having to relive this horryifying event daily for however long it took to write it; and the other author and contributor for having not only the drive, stamina, and courage to survive, but the strength to thrive and the compassion to forgive. Absolutely FANTASTIC book. Cheers!

Very well written and brings the story to life in a way that I never imagined. Reading about the devastation in the aftermath of the bombing on Hiroshima is so real you feel you are actually there witnessing the horror (and horror it was). While it is difficult to read from a subject matter standpoint, I highly recommend it. Life is not just about the fun, light-hearted moments. Our true character develops from the hardships in life. The story being told from the viewpoint of an actual family who experienced this atrocity draws one in in a way that is unexpected. One reviewer mentioned it as historical fiction, however, it is anything but. The bombing was real, the family was/is real. Even if you are not a history buff, don't miss this one. An excellent read!!

By Mommy2828 An INCREDIBLE book for everyone who loves historical fiction, Asian fiction, and for anyone obsessed with WWII in general. The devastation that the two bombs created in Japan are difficult to think about, let alone read about. I've read many first-hand accounts about what happened after the bombs were dropped. But this is different - this gives you a connection to a real family. Loved it.
