Mahoney threads his way through the complex, fascinating world of Prohibition-day Saint Paul, about as far from Minnesota Nice as you can get. A nice noirish plot, but with characters that manage to inflate the cliche characters we might expect with life, humor, quirks. Even the dogs and parakeets have character. Mick Powers is a complicated guy with complicated problems that seem never quite to be solved ... but WAIT, there's another book coming. And if you like historical fiction like I do, you'll love the meticulously researched and beautifully presented story of old St. Paul. (less)

By John Harrigan Lots of nostalgia floats around today about colorful gangsters of the twenties providing innocent refreshment to a public made thirsty by Prohibition. Gross exaggeration argues Tim Mahoney in his novel If the Dead Could Speak. This is the first of four excellent novels about the twenties and thirties, all of which observe gangland through the eyes of an engaging protagonist, Mick Powers.Mick has made his living for years running errands for a local gang leader in St. Paul, Minnesota. Abetting the gangsters was a corrupt police department and city hall that offered refuge to men on the run as long as they paid for the privilege and didn’t spread their violence locally. But that cozy arrangement collapses when two young women are murdered and then incinerated for nothing worse than witnessing the wrong thing at the wrong time in the wrong place. Repelled by this turn of events, Mick Powers sets out to discover who killed them. This puts him squarely in a no-man’s land between two local gangs, a police chief on the gangster’s payroll, and the sons of Ma Barker as they go about, murder, arson, and kidnapping. Ma Barker herself was later shot dead by the FBI and characterized by J. Edgar Hoover as a “vicious, dangerous criminal.” While her sons were guilty of many violent crimes, Ma Barker herself, according to author Tim Mahoney, probably wasn’t guilty of anything worse than simply being a dysfunctional mother. If the Dead Could Speak has a special strong point in the deftness with which the fictional Mick Powers interacts with a bevy of real life people, real events, and real places of the time. A lively world of people has disappeared, all replaced by impersonal technology: traffic cops, elevator operators, street cars, bookie parlors, pay phones, gambling dens, and stifling summers without air conditioning. If the Dead Could Speak brings it all back to life for you.Author Tim Mahoney’s credentials for the Mick Powers stories are impeachable. He is an editor for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and author of the definitive history of St. Paul racketeering: Secret Partners: Big Tom Brown and the Barker Gang. The Jeeptown Sock Hop

I can hear his dialogue like it was on the radio, and I just want to turn it up. Mahoney, like me, is a Minnesota local, a St. Paulite already published as a historian of his city's decadent decade as a hitman hideout, years spanning the 1930s when the cops and robbers honored the famous Deal. According to the Deal, regardless of your robber resume or how many tommyguns you owned, you could stay out of jail in St. Paul as long as you paid your dues and worked elsewhere. The famous Green Lantern bar welcomed desperadoes like Alvin Karpis, John Dillinger, and the fabulous Barker boys. Mahoney's down-on-his-luck bootlegger Mick Powers thinks too much as he negotiates the tides of the quick-turning relationships among the cops, the bankers, the gangsters, and the church, giving us, the readers, a cynical glimpse of the wild west show that was St. Paul in the 1930s. Mick gets up from every punch and, even if a little woozy, he will be fighting more rounds in this series of four books. I plan to catch them all.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Fabric of Murder By Cphe Very much enjoyed this cozy historical mystery set in Georgian times. The main character Ashmole Foxe is at face value a bookseller but appearances are deceptive. There is more to Ashmole Foxe then first appears.I thought that the mystery component of this novel to be well executed and quite detailed. The cast of supporting characters were well portrayed. I didn't have an inkling as to who the culprit would be until well into the story. I also thought that the times were well depicted and historically accurate. Very much enjoyed the description of Norwich during the period and some insight into the Guild's of the time. Well worth a look at.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Thoroughly enjoyable.... By Trinity Cause It's been some time since I've read a Kindle Prime free monthly book that was actually good. Although this author is new to me and seems to be new to the public his writing is very good, worthy of better known authors, and I well appreciate it. The characters are full depth and likable. I really did care what happened to them. The story is complex but consistent in its progression so not confusing to the reader. However, if you are a dedicated murder mystery fan you will guess who is behind the murder somewhere around midway to two thirds through the book. This will make no difference though as the writing and characters are that good that you will keep reading and enjoying every chapter. The time period and setting is described by other reviewers so I will only concur with them and not elaborate here. The only flaw, as is typical with many Kindle books, are the typos. Whether self or mass published they seem to be rampant in Kindle books but even this did not deter me as I enjoyed the writing that much. Beware though that one chronic typo throughout the book is the use of the word "than". You will see it over and over again typed as "that" so after a bit you'll learn to automatically change it to "than" without dropping your reading tempo. It's this type of typo along with a few others, not too much in all, that may distract some readers. The main character, Ashmole Foxe, is a delight in his covert deceptions although serious when needs be. His friends are equally unique with appeals of their own. I look forward to the next installment in what I am hoping is a series.

He looks every bit the English gent; a wealthy bachelor at that, but there's more to this mystery man, underneath the facade he has carefully created. The story takes an interesting turn when a cloth merchant is murdered. Can Mr Foxe solve the crime and save the day? Or is he somehow involved? A cozy mystery with a few twists along the way, leading to a satisfying conclusion.William Savage has also written 'An Unlamented Death' another murder mystery set in Norfolk, England, however both stories can be read as standalone books. Well worth the read.

By Ameliah Faith Decadent Publishing has a great series of stories retelling old fairy tales in an unlimited new ways. There have been several wonderful authors contributing to DP's vision. Here is the newest installment.Sydney is a sexy little witch with a badge and a secret. She howls at the moon. Her assignment is to infiltrate Club Beam to find out who is killing off witches and stop him from killing again. After a battle with a vampire, she has attracted the attention of an incubus Will she survive long enough to find the killer? Will her incubus be able to protect her while she stops an otherworldly creature and stops a war? Who is the silver haired Fae man and more importantly, will I make it through the book with out having a heart attack? (I did but only just, I highly suggest you find out the answer to the rest of these questions yourself!!)I thoroughly enjoyed this enchanted tale and not just because I adore Ms. Bishop. (its no secret I do but I assure you I am being honest!) The story had wonderful drama, action and suspense. There was mystery, intrigue, and of course the 4F's that she is best at, super steamy sex scenes. I was entangled in the story and had to read it beginning to end all at once. Just like potato chips, I was helpless to stop at just one, it was sooo good!!I dreamed of the saga during the night and even now writing this review I can still see, feel and hear the Club, the battle and Syd's torment. It is still magical even a day later. It is a delight to behold. Thank you so much for inviting me to the party Ms Bishop.

A vampire with some fun fetishes who wants to catch the killer too. Can these two work together to keep the magical community safe? One thing for sure, they can have fun trying.Sometimes you just can't win for losing and Sydney is experiencing that for sure. First, she gets bitten and has to take her meds and pray she won't become a werewolf. She can't make any progress on the case she is working on and her partner is recovering from his injuries and out of reach. She gets an opportunity to visit a vampire club that might have just the information she is looking for but she will be without her weapons and on her own. Those risks place her closer and closer to death but also bring her to the attention of a gorgeous vampire named Gideon Raines who just might be worth it all.Sydney is a witch with style and skills, and I enjoyed her brash, confident, and sassy manner. She takes on issues head on and is the kind of woman that asks for forgiveness after rather than permission first. Sydney really cares about others and is a protector by nature so the role of detective fits her well. After the initial introduction and action, there is an abrupt kind of stop to where it seemed to be going.Gideon is a vampire with style and a good match for Sydney. In addition to being a vampire club, his club also caters to those with fetishes. There is a hint of a situation that Gideon was involved in that has kept him from participating in the services behind the red door lately but the author does not reveal more. He definitely is attracted to Sydney and it seems like she reawakens those desires. We really don't get to learn a lot about him and spend as much time with him and Sydney as I would have liked.I expected more interactions between Sydney and Gideon and was disappointed. They spend more time thinking and talking about the other rather than being with each other. I wanted to see them explore the club and all its offerings. It is a very short story and I would have enjoyed it more if the author had found more opportunities to bring them together. Without getting into any spoilers, there was a time period where he easily could have been there with her but for some reason the author kept them apart. It is a short story and pretty quick read that immerses you in the action right away. I really enjoyed the characters and would have liked to spend more time with them. I think there is a great deal more the author could do with the characters and hope for a longer sequel. Sydney and Gideon deserve some more time together to explore all those desires.Disclaimer: A copy of this book is received from the publisher/author in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. awesome! By MRS M D ATTENBOROUGH I was gifted this copy direct from the author, and I thank Ms Bishop for that.Police detective, witch and generally narky Sydney does not really want to visit Club Beam with her friend, Erika, but she does, for Erika. Facing down a vampire killing witches was certainly NOT on the agenda, nor was falling for the club owner, Master Gideon. Nor was being bitten by said murderous vampire, and having Gideon save her life. Sydney really is having a bad day!Love Love Love this! Sydney is one awesome character, hardened by her job, being bitten by a wolf some weeks previous, and those killer heels Erika had her wear! She's sassy, snarky and will get her man, or in this case, vampire. Now, being honest here. Club Beam has a BDSM part and Gideon makes use of that part from time to time. BUT not here, and not with Sydney. I expected there to be some BDSM element, and while its mentioned, talked about, joked about here, there is no actual play. And I LOVED that! I did, I really did! I surprised myself with that one, I tell ya! AND! what pleased me more than there being no play between Gideon and Sydney, is there is very little actual sex between them. Oh, there is heat, and passion and steam enough, it just comes mostly from the dreams Sydney has with Gideon after she drank his blood and he visited her in via her subconcious mind, as the Incubi here do. AND THEN!!!! What I loved was that little bit at the end that leaves me beggin for more! Much more! I do hope I don't have to wait too long. The underlaying plot is not yet finished either, something is going on with Sydney's police partner, also bitten by the wolf, she hasn't seen him since. So I look forward to see what's going on there too. This is the first I have read of this author, and it certainly won't be the last.5 Stars**same worded review appears on Goodreads, Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk**

Review "The Deamhan Chronicles is not your average Vampire Novel. In fact it's not really a Vampire Novel at all. See the Deamhan are something different. Yes they need us to survive and they can die in similar ways to vampires, but they are a race unto themselves."S. I. From the Author Thank you so much for purchasing the first book in The Deamhan Chronicles. The second book, Dark Curse, is now available along with another novel set in the same universe titled "Maris. The Brotherhood Files."Deamhan isn't like any vampire novel. Deamhan are supernatural creatures, bent on survival, who live in a world surrounded by their sanguine enemies. If you're looking for romance, you won't find it in this novel. I love honest reviews and if you would be so kind to leave one, it would make my day.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I really liked it By Galit Balli Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.ReviewPlot/Story:The author had created wonderfully a new paranormal race, that resembles vampires but with a twist. This is a very action packed and thrilling story full of drama, danger and mystery. Even though the story here is about vampires like creatures, this is no ordinary vampire story and you will not see here the elements of a regular vampire we all know too well from movies and books. Here they are more powerful and more unique.Characters:The characters are well written and are so likable, that you will be hooked fast to their story and adventures. The characters bring the story to a new level, as if you are one of them. The character’s point of view changed but in a very compelling way that makes the story even more beautiful. Veronica is such a wonderful and strong character; she is by far my favorite.Romance/Kills:There are some sex scenes, but for me I didn’t see any point to them as the story could perfectly do without.Writing:The author writes very charmingly, her details are so vivid and brings her world and characters into life so perfectly, that you can easily see the characters and their life. The world building, the characters and the story itself is well thought off and masterfully written.Beginning:At first I didn’t get into the story as fast as I thought I would, but it changed fast. The world at first is hard to grasps, but if you don’t think too much about it and accept the rules of the creatures, the reading will be must faster. After the first few chapters, I was deep into the story and I was hooked completely. From there on it was a fast pace read.Ending:The end is a bit off for me, there were so many things I wanted to know more and didn’t get the answers. I need answers! I think it’s because there is (or might be) another book to this series and I hate waiting for the second book to come out, lol. I hope there will be more books ((crossing fingers)).Blurb:The blurb was just right. After reading it, I wanted to know more and more about this world and about Deamhans. It was not too reviling, just the way I like it and really told the story in a vague way. Letting you know just enough so you’ll want to know more.Cover Art:The cover art is just so gorgeous, stunning.Other StuffOpening Line: Veronica Austin stood in line behind a tall woman with long black hair, her blonde roots clearly visible in the streetlight brightening the corner.Highlights: I love the story the author weaved and the characters really had made the read a great one.Lowlights: There were a lot of questions unanswered, but I hope to get more answers in the second book.Memorable Quotes:“Remy tilted his head to sniff the air. “I love that smell.” He turned his head to look over his shoulder. “The smell of fear.”“Don’t confuse my act of kindness to be in your favor.”“Loved? A Deamhan couldn’t love? Impossible. Yet she wanted to know more.”Final Thoughts: For me it was a wonderful read and even though it far from my comfort zone of books, I still loved it a lot.Read the original review at http://thereadingbud.com

By ADITI SAHA Deamhan is another name for vampires who rule the "dark" and the night defines them. Isaiyan Morrison is one such author, who unlike Stephanie Meyer, have not crafted a traditional romantic tale of the so-called vampires, instead, she enlightened us, the readers, with another creature who are similar to vampires, but whose demeanour and lifestyle is more unique and scarier than those vampires, in her new book, Deamhan (Deamhan Chronicles #1).A huge thanks to the author, Isaiyan Morrison, for giving me this opportunity to read and review her unique and incredible book.Deamhan series is about a group of psychic vampires who remain hidden under the "dark" of the night bonded together in their secret and dangerous organizations in a world which is full of lies, fear and evil. And a young girl named, Veronica Austin, embarks upon a journey to uncover the truth regarding her mother. And on her quest to truth, she stumbles upon this ferocious creature called, Deamhan, who unlike the vampires, has an air of deep, dark evilness among them.Veronica is one of the strongest heroines that I've stumbled upon after a very long time. Veronica is fearless, stubborn and dauntless and doesn't need a second somebody to help her unravel the secrets behind her mother's disappearance. The bond between Veronica and her mother, Caroline is remarkably very strong and undying, which helps Veronica to move ahead with a determination.Deamhan are not those kind of regular vampires that we read about. It is a different paranormal species that lurks in the night. Their social strata to their lifestyle to their habits, everything have been shown different than the vampires. And the classification that has been represented by the author is the book is quite striking. Her imagination and her fictitious creature doesn't make you think even for once that these are all imaginary, instead, everything sounds so very real. I loved how the author has portrayed Deamhan with logic and has made us believe about their race. The book is mind-blowingly awesome and it has got some adrenaline-rushing actions which are power-packed and keep you on your edges till the very end. Unlike those cheesy romantic vampire tales, this book has got a powerful storyline and an interesting and remarkable set of characters which are enough to take you on a roller-coaster ride of suspense and thrill. With exquisite and eloquent words, the author has turned this tale into something very captivating and intriguing. The vampires lovers will find another new love and get totally gripped by the author's scary and dangerous imaginary world which is filled with Deamhan and vampires.

By Karlee Lawrence Veronica's mother disappeared years ago but her father refuses to tell her anything about what happened. When Veronica decides to leave San Diego to go to Minnesota to find out the truth, will she discover more than what she can handle? The are four different types of Deamhan's that live on our earth and they all feed in different ways. When a human is claimed by a Deamhan, that human in theory is untouchable. Veronica learns that someone has claimed her, why did the Deamhan claim her and can this Deamhan be trusted? Being born by Researchers, Veronica knows a decent amount about Deamhan's but she's putting her own life at risk the more she digs up information. Who can she trust? Deamhan's are known to be liars but are there some that truly can be trusted? Find out when you read this book! Can't wait to read the next one!

Inside the Mind of a Gambler: The Hidden Addiction and How to Stop, by Stephen Renwick

About the Author Stephen Renwick (author of bestselling sports books 'Tennis is Mental' and 'Tennis is Mental too') is a psychology tutor who has undertaken research into gambling addiction. In this book he looks at a case study of a compulsive gambler known as Guy. The book looks in detail at the psychological aspects of gambling and inside the mind of a gambler. Although this is a case study, you will no doubt recognise patterns of behavior and mental processes that are common among the majority of pathological gamblers. After spending many hours quizzing Guy on his gambling habits and how he thinks, Renwick used it to form the basis of this book which aims to help other gamblers challenge their addiction and ultimately stop gambling completely. The book can also be used for psychologists and psychiatrists as a unique case study, along with any students studying gambling addiction or psychology.

By Richard Steiner Inside the Mind of a Gambler by Stephen Renwick is an easy read because it doesn't use a lot of psychological jargon. Renwick focuses on a specific problem gambler named "Guy;" and takes us through why he compulsively gambles and rationalizes this life destroying behavior and how compulsive gambling can be effectively treated. Renwick is a Brit so some of the examples and recommendations are specific to England; but; they are easily translatable to anyone in any country with a gambling addiction.

Gannon!2105, September: Intelligence Analyst Caine Riordan uncovers a conspiracy on Earth's Moon—a history-making clandestine project—and ends up involuntarily cryocelled for his troubles. Twelve years later, Riordan awakens to a changed world. Humanity has achieved faster-than-light travel and is pioneering nearby star systems. And now, Riordan is compelled to become an inadvertent agent of conspiracy himself. Riordan's mission: travel to a newly settled world and investigate whether a primitive local species was once sentient—enough so to have built a lost civilization. However, arriving on site in the Delta Pavonis system, Caine discovers that the job he's been given is anything but secret or safe. With assassins and saboteurs dogging his every step, it's clear that someone doesn't want his mission to succeed. In the end, it takes the keen insights of an intelligence analyst and a matching instinct for intrigue to ferret out the truth: that humanity is neither alone in the cosmos nor safe. Earth is revealed to be the lynchpin planet in an impending struggle for interstellar dominance, a struggle into which it is being irresistibly dragged. Discovering new dangers at every turn, Riordan must now convince the powers-that-be that the only way for humanity to survive as a free species is to face the perils directly—and to fight fire with fire.At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

What we have here, gentlemen, is Secret Agent: Mary Sue By Justin Imagine if one day, for no discernible reason, elite and powerful members of the intelligence community start hanging on your every word and begin scheming and plotting to make your life interesting.Imagine their horror at the utter necessity by which they are forced to induct you against your will into their spy agency. "This Mary," they say, "she is THE ONLY HOPE for humanity. Why must we mistreat her so?""Why?" one of them might ask. "As far as I can tell, she's some random reporter with no particular skills.""I'm not really clear on this 'why' issue," the president of the world says from a dark, smoke filled corner of the room. "But blast it, she is the one! Without her, humanity is lost! Mary Sue is our only hope!"In mere moments, you are hang gliding through a cloud forest full of dinosaurs with rocket powered robo-Hitlers chasing you from tree top to tree top! Using the brand new super spy skills you learned last Friday, you dive between the jaws of a T-Rex and steal the Star Emerald of Hope from the maw of a giant dragon-Cthulhu!Meanwhile, while our pack of mysterious spy masters are plotting a scheme to trick some hunk into dating you, they get into a long and pointless debate over whether a blonde or brunette is more to your liking. "My God!" says the Director of the CIA-NSA-FSB, "this random sex object had better be up to Mary Sue's standards, or the world is done for!"...Would this book be your style? Perhaps you'd prefer to flip the sexes of the characters, and use a name like Caine Riordan instead? If so, then have we found the book for you! I may have changed a few particulars of the plot around, but don't worry, it doesn't matter very much.If that doesn't sound like a book you'd like to read, then I suggest you skip this one.

Dong I decided to come on Amazon because I assumed some insider deal must have led David Weber, David Brin and Jerry Pournelle to recommend this book. I see from the other reviews, though, that it is apparently possible to like it. I found it a weird combination of a bad sci-fi of yesteryear and...well, the Mary Sue mention captures it. Every 20 pages the guy escapes from death. We hear the top spy people talk about how he is an incredible genius, a polymath, whose mind works totally different from others. But apparently it never occurred to recruit him in a normal way and they hate the lying in their jobs (very yesteryear) because he's so pure, and it was reasonable to cryogenically freeze this citizen not because they were afraid he'd say anything, but because an author on an investigation who disappears on the moon is apparently less likely to draw bad publicity than if they'd just revived him... ah, hell. I just skimmed the last half, though what I saw only seemed to make it look more idiotic. An alien contact that should have been the whole book instead took about 100 pages and then they're off for more. Meanwhile, things like the fact that the guys parents died while he was frozen only get tossed in at about that mark by the praising master spies, while our hero never spares a single thought for them or his previous life (aside from his first thought upon waking, which was "I wonder if there will be a place for me in this world." Seriously? After just 13 years?) We also have about 700 people die who only bother him through one nightmare (lucky he didn't know any kids on that occasion) when our supposed incredible polymath is apparently to be lauded for other lives saved, when he had days to come up with something that would have saved everyone. Eck. No personality, one attack after another, and just totally unbelievable. I still don't know how any of you could have liked it.

31 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Heck of a start By Doug Jones (Chief45) I got Fire with Fire via Kindle, started today and finished today. Wow. Heck of a start Chuck, I'm very pleased with it. Never lets up, never even really slows down. Full throttle thriller and, here's a bit of a shock. The characters are good, complex, devious, real. I learned from Piper, Heinlein, Campbell, the good guy is supposed to be good. I loath the whinny, self doubting anti-hero that so many authors dish up. You won't find that here, the Hero is a good guy and competent, the major players are good at their job, even when they hate their job. The bad guys are realistic. This opens up a vast area for sequels and additional stories in this universe. I look forward to the next installment. Very much worth the purchase price.

The Civil War is over, but the battle rages on. Embittered former Confederates bring down a reign of terror upon blacks and whites alike in North Carolina's hill country. They soon collide with other ex-Confederates who want only to put the fighting behind them and live in peace. Once they were comrades in arms. Now these war weary men find themselves in a deadly conflict with each other. A former Confederate Captain declares himself a Colonel and forms a "vigilance committee" composed of a band of murderous former soldiers and local criminals. They terrorize, rape and kill black people in a quiet corner of western North Carolina. Meanwhile a humble family of ex-slaves begins a treacherous journey fleeing persecution and violence in Charleston to find Francis Yelton, an ex-Confederate they believe will help them find a home free from the hate and violence of the plantation country. Francis comes home but he and his comrades soon determine to return to Virginia to bring back the body of a fallen comrade. They endure a dangerous journey only to come home to a virtual cauldron of violence and fear. Once again they take up arms, but this time they are not fighting the Yankees. This war is with an enemy that seems as ethereal as a ghost but as deadly as any they faced with Lee's army in Virginia.

Season of the Crow, by Barry D Yelton

Review Deftly written by a master storyteller, "Season of the Crow" by Barry D. Yelton is a thoroughly absorbing and solidly entertaining historical novel from beginning to end. Very highly recommended and certain to be a compelling addition to community library Historical Fiction collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "Season of the Crow" is also available in a Kindle edition ($5.99). Clint TravisReviewerMidwest Book ReviewFrom the Internet Review of BooksHell burns in North Carolina hill countrySEASON OF THE CROWA Novel of the Civil War Reconstruction EraBy Barry Yelton332 pp. Strider Nolan Media, Inc.Reviewed by Gary PresleyYelton follows up his fictional Civil History, Scarecrow in Gray, with more fictionalized adventures of Francis Yelton, his ancestor.Lee has surrendered at Appomattox, and Francis Yelton is home at Camp Creek in the hills of Rutherford County, North Carolina. Francis, a married man with two daughters, was late to the war, but he saw enough carnage in Virginia to change a man--to make going back to the hardscrabble life behind the plow a happy prospect. War forges brothers, and for Francis there were three from Rutherford County. There's Whit Whitaker, who lost an eye but saved Francis's life. There's good-humored Les Carpenter, and the always reliable Cas Hutchins, left buried in woodland grave after being bushwhacked by a rogue Union officer. There are actually two Yelton narratives within this nicely paced novel. There are Francis's adventures--his persuading Whit and Les to travel to Virginia to fetch Cas's body home. The second follows the men as they confront guerrilla nightriders in Rutherford County, villains wearing hoods and raiding after sundown, often lynching African-Americans and their supporters. That brings former slave Cyrus Holland into the story. Cyrus and his family are left scrambling for food and shelter in South Carolina. Cyrus, having encountered the kind and empathetic Francis during the war, decides to walk, with his family, to Rutherford County. That narrative, one of hardship and perseverance, flows in alternate chapters during the first half of the book before the two stories join, and there are dramatic revelations as the Holland family encounters friend and foe.The author has the touch of writing natural dialog, and his descriptions of life in the 1860s, a period when a minor wound or a now-curable illness often meant death, are laced through the novel. His characters land on the pages as real people, with even Arthur Ponder, leader of the Ku Klux Klan-like nightriders, arriving with a nuanced personality. It's an often violent tale, suitable for teenagers and adults, but Yelton's detailed research gives the novel a veracity to be envied. Those who like reading about the Civil War and its aftermath won't go wrong with Yelton's historical fiction.

Proponents of the Confederate flag fight on behalf of freed slaves By Michael S Katz These days it seems pretty gutsy to show the Confederate flag on anything, but the torn version that appears on the cover of this book aptly characterizes the disheveled state of the South that is described therein. Author Barry Yelton writes about a number of realistic characters whose motivations fall on both sides of the slavery debate. Yes, many Southerners fought against the North because they wanted to save the institution of slavery; but many others, despite not having any stake in the economics of slavery, fought because they believed that at the time the US government was overstepping its bounds. And then there were those who fought simply because they were forced to do so, either by their states or by peer pressure. The latter group is where you will find the heroes of this novel: men who were conscripted or signed up before they would have faced the ignominy of being drafted; men who were glad when the Civil War was over, because they wanted nothing more than to return to simple lives. Yet when the time came to stand up for what was right, many of these very same Southerners fought to protect the rights--and lives--of freed slaves against racists who refused to let the war end. This novel (and its prequel, Scarecrow in Gray) shows that many Confederate soldiers were honorable men.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Timely Historical Novel By D. Salerni In elegant prose and through the eyes of an ancestor, Yelton portrays the grim aftermath of the Civil War in North Carolina, where the conflict lingers in the minds and hearts of all who were touched by it. The armistice doesn’t bring instant peace, of course. In fact, it generates more hatred and violence as some ex-soldiers on the losing side of the war declare themselves vigilantes and spearhead racist attacks against newly-freed slaves. One ex-Confederate who’d hoped to be through with fighting forever has to take up arms again in the name of justice to defend and protect the innocent. Although historical, this is a timely novel for a nation once again confronting racist acts of violence and debating exactly what it means that some states continue to honor the Confederate flag and pro-slavery figures like John C. Calhoun. The Confederate mind-set has never gone away in the south, and Yelton’s novel serves as a vivid reminder of its post-war beginnings.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Courage under fire. By Jack Shakely The beast that was the Civil War drags its tail through Reconstruction. Barry Yelton, whose previous novel, "Scarecrow in Gray," brought the scourge of war alive through family history, again brings great depth of character and historical research together to tell a story I simply could not put down. I highly recommend this novel about a time that was no less disturbing than the war that preceded it.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Fluke printing issue with my copy, but the authors and McGraw Hill went out of their way to fix the issue! And -- great book! By Michael Willers Initial review, with one star given: Completely misprinted. Over 50 pages of the book are missing. An inexcusable mistake from McGraw Hill.(I was particularly perturbed because I had taken this book to Latin America with me so I could do some intensive review, and I had no way of getting another copy while I was down there.)New review: I asked to return this book to Amazon, and I got a full refund, with no need to return the book. Then, I received a wonderful email from Christopher at McGraw Hill with an apology (which was not needed, but appreciated nonetheless) and a sincere request to fix the issue by sending me another copy right away. Thanks so much, Christopher! I love that you stand behind your books and support your authors. I really appreciate that the authors (Ronni Gordon and David Stillman) are interested in the reviews of the book, and that they contacted McGraw Hill, and that Christopher went to such trouble to help me out.Having said all of that, as I really wanted to be able to do this intensive Spanish review on my trip, I bought and downloaded the Kindle version, and it rocks -- beautifully laid out, with an easy way to switch between the exercises and the answer key. The book is very well written -- clear, thorough and concise. There is also an app (Language Lab) that McGraw has on the app store that is fantastic and really supports the material in the book. My favorite are the extensive vocabulary flashcards -- I am so used to making my own, and I am happy not to have to do so. I've seen a lot (a lot!) of Spanish texts in my time, but this one really does beat them all with its clarity, organization, accuracy and thoroughness. So -- to sum up: Odd, surely rare printing issue with my copy of the book. I am sure the others are fine. Great customer service from McGraw Hill. And a terrific book all around -- whether printed or Kindle version.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Missing pages and repeated pages! By Linda P. So annoyed! The book went from page 50-115 (skipping the pages in between). Then goes from 115-146, and the next page is 83. Then there are several repeated pages throughout the rest of the book. I bought this for a private Spanish class I'm taking and now I can't even do my homework because I'm missing so many pages! The rest of the book is great review. Just disappointed that I received this awful copy.Just requested a replacement so hopefully the next one is printed correctly!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Printing Issue with an Otherwise Great Book By Amazon Customer I had the exact same issue as Linda P. The book skips from page 50 to page 115, then goes from 146 to 83 before continuing onward like normal. Therefore I am missing pages 51-82. I am not certain how to contact the seller/publisher for a replacement, so I hope that this review may be seen. Aside from that, this book is an outstanding resource for intermediate Spanish learners, and I would recommend it highly.

--- This beloved fantasy classic for readers of all ages is about a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins who is whisked off on an unexpected journey by Gandalf the wizard and a company of thirteen dwarves. "The Hobbit" is a tale of high adventure, undertaken by a company of dwarves in search of dragon-guarded gold. A reluctant partner in this perilous quest is Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving unambitious hobbit, who surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and skill as a burglar. Encounters with trolls, goblins, dwarves, elves and giant spiders, conversations with the dragon, Smaug, and a rather unwilling presence at the Battle of Five Armies are just some of the adventures that befall Bilbo. Bilbo Baggins has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals of children's fiction. Written by Professor Tolkien for his own children, "The Hobbit" met with instant critical acclaim when published. The book includes all the drawings and maps by the author.

Bradley is back! Michael Bradley, author of the critically acclaimed, Swords at Sunset and other non-fiction books on the Holy Grail (he was a researcher for The Da Vinci Code movie), has now written his first novel since the 1970s, when Imprint and The Mantouche Factor together sold more than half-a-million copies. Now, the long fiction drought is over with the release of a new novel: The Magdalene Mandala draws on Bradley's enviable reputation as a Holy Grail expert to lend authenticity to a plot that twists and turns at a rapid pace, bringing together murder and intrigue, political cover-ups, the Grail...and Mary Magdalene. Added to this intoxicating literary mix are detailed descriptions of ingenious low-tech survivalist devices.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Magdalene Mandala and Swords at Sunset a great pair By Nancy Smith Now this is a wonderful pairing: Michael Bradley's novel The Magdalene Mandala with his non-fiction Swords at Sunset tracing the Holy Grail to North America. This package offering is superb. I picked up both books and could not put either of them down until I reached the back cover. Amazing! The Magdalene Mandala is a fast-paced thriller that's a bit like James Bond meeting the Da Vinci Code (author Bradley was a researcher for the Da Vinci Code movie and is a recognized Holy Grail expert). No wonder Bradley's prior two novels were major bestsellers: This book combines an exciting, action-filled story with meticulous research on the Grail. Well done!Swords at Sunset is the true story of Bradley's efforts tracing the Holy Grail to Canada and the United States. It's all supported by archeological evidence from digs in Vermont, Quebec, Niagara, Ontario and elsewhere. He raises many fascinating possibilities in this well argued book that left me wondering if descendents of Jesus Christ's bloodline now walk among us.I highly recommend both books. Each is absiolutely terrific and they do indeed make a great pair.
