PRAISE FOR TRANSORBITAL

“Nathan Singer is what a writer is meant to be: daring, unique, original, and insightful. Transorbital proves it in spades.” - Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times Bestselling author of Robert B. Parker's The Devil Wins “Nathan Singer’s Transorbital pulses with a relentless momentum. In Transorbital, Singer propels a strange, unsettling world reminiscent of William Burroughs’s best work with the fierce urgency of a Michael Crichton science thriller. With Transorbital, Nathan Singer has once again proven himself the master of the literary pulp thriller.” - Steve Weddle, author of Country Hardball "I love everything about this book. I love the cult of the Transorbitals and the circus freakiness of it all. Like an ice pick to the frontal lobe of conventional fiction, Transorbital is what happens when the brilliant mind of Nathan Singer is unleashed on one of medicine's most embarrassing periods.” - Bryon Quertermous, author of Murder Boy With his trusty ice pick in hand and his loyal – though erratic – sidekick riding shotgun, superstar lobotomist Dr. Walter Freeman drives his Lobotomobile coast to coast across post-war America, determined to save the country from its own troubled mind. With messianic fervor, an evangelist’s sense of righteousness, and a jazzman’s gift for improvisation (and showmanship), Doc Freeman is quickly gaining converts, and notoriety. All is going just swell, until a number of Freeman’s former protégés start turning up dead, and only Freeman’s assistant, The Kid, is able to recognize that something sinister is afoot. Will The Kid be able to keep his demons at bay and get to the bottom of things before the bodies really start piling up? Creepy, grimy, and darkly humorous, TRANSORBITAL is an off-kilter twist on the old pulp whodunit.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. a sharp poke straight to the brain! By William L. Nienaber There are certain things I always expect when I read a Nathan Singer novel. First and foremost, I always expect to be made to feel uncomfortable numerous times. I expect the story to be dark, and have some twists that will make my head spin a bit. I also expect some well-informed and totally pertinent musical references. I expect to learn something I didn't previously know, and I expect to gain a new perspective on something I THOUGHT I already understood. This novel? Totally met expectations! It tells a bit of the story of Dr. Walter Freeman, inventor of the transorbital lobotomy (also sometimes known as the "icepick lobotomy" for reasons which become immediately evident in chapter one!) The first section gives us glimpses of Freeman and his assistant (the narrator known only as "the Kid" or "Lad") travelling around the country in Freeman's van (which he refers to as the lobotomobile) performing lobotomies on anyone who seems to be a little removed from the "norm," even to children as young as eight whose parents find them uncontrollable! Eventually, the Kid becomes a bit disenchanted with Freeman, who he has previously always seen as a great hero of modern medicine, and they part ways. The real meat of the story begins when the Kid learns from one of Freeman's former proteges that a number of lobotomists have been turning up dead... and the two of them begin to investigate. This book starts out with an "emergency" lobotomy which totally lives up to the nickname "icepick lobotomy" and really never slows down much until it reaches the startling final scene. True to form, Singer manages to be educational, alarming, informative, and a bit subversive all at the same time!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Quick, dark and thoroughly enjoyable By Amazon Customer Singer has written some of my favorite books of all time (Chasing the Wolf, A Prayer for Dawn), and this one is a welcome addition to the list. It's dark. Like, extremely dark. It opens with a transorbital lobotomy and goes on from there. But the action is non-stop and the characters are great fun to watch. Singer has a very distinctive voice that carries through all of his work, but it is a voice that is adapted to the piece at hand, be it the 50s and 60s in Transorbital, the 30s in Chasing the Wolf or the present day in his other work. This voice is one of the best parts of his writing, making every book feel like a living, breathing entity, and it is on full display here. Not for the faint of heart, but a cursory look at the book's cover art should pretty much have clued you in to that. But if you're in for a fast, dark, seat-of-your-pants ride, this is exactly what the (possibly medically unsound) doctor ordered.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Eye Opening By Randy Blackmon I loved the way the author addressed an ugly time in medical history. No one I have ever heard or read, talked about transorbital lobotomies. It is revolting and my fear is that the procedure Nathan writes about was indeed practiced. Part of the time I was cringing and thinking There is no way this could have happened. The genius of the writing is how Nathan infuses side-splitting humor into the horror of the lives of patients (victims), the Lad, drug addiction and hookers. It is hard to stomach some of the scenes, and magnetic at the same time.

The raven came to look for them amid the Sierra peaks. The old men shouldn’t even be alive any longer, but they were—they’d been together as part of the landscape for over 150 years. Wu was Chinese, a refugee of the Opium wars and the Taiping Rebellion. He’d sailed across the Eastern Ocean to California at the behest of Dizang the bodhisattva. Francisco was a Yokuts Indian captured by the Spanish army and raised by the friars at Mission San Luis Obispo. After his escape he’d become a bear shaman. The two men’s fates have intertwined in such a way that their lives have gone on and on as they wandered the Sierra. The old men even danced the Ghost Dance together in an attempt to restore Francisco’s people and the life of the landscape. The raven told the old men there was someone coming – JR, a cowboy of the Sierra foothills whose sad ass cowboy economics and PTSD from serving in Iraq have left him ready to fall off the edge of the world. His life is empty, but the mountains and rivers have conspired to bring him together with the old men.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Masterful Tale of Healing By sekihiker What happens when two very old men, Francisco and Wu, run into a burned out cowboy, JR, suffering from the horrors of the Iraq war and struggling to find something worth living for? John Spivey spins a marvelous tale of how the old men help JR to the next stage of his life. Wu carries the ancient wisdom of the Far East and Francisco is a master of the culture of the Noble Savage. The unlikely pair of old men have traveled together through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada along the branches of the Kaweah River for more than 150 years. Visions have compelled them to continue their journey during which they have learned to accept the pain and suffering that is always a part of the human experience. It seems their acceptance of the human condition and their deep friendship has allowed them to achieve their superhuman ages. The story describes the tremendous environmental and cultural changes that the Kaweah River drainage has seen during the past 150 years. I doubt that I will meet Francisco and Wu in the reaches of the Kaweah, but John Spivey has given me the next best thing - two memorable characters that will always resonate in my heart.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Spiritual Healing, Natural History and History By Susan R. Davidson John Spivey is a gifted story teller. He uses his knowledgeable perspective, and personal hard-learned and heart-felt wisdom, to weave together words and world views. His characters are rich and their suffering and backgrounds form a foundation to understand the destruction of a land and her indigenous people.Healing is at the core of this book. A search for the hidden spiritual depths of our own consciousness, a journey to find our strengths and resources, and a way to find forgiveness for our ancestors as well as ourselves. This is a thoughtful book and well written. John's deep understanding of the human condition and history make the ending powerful. As my awareness and understanding began to unfold into my own consciousness, I knew I had to go back and read the book again.I believe from whatever culture you have come from or family experience you have had, The Crying Dance, will have meaning and may help to provide understanding for what came before you.The bear has returned, stay awake.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. "My words are tied in one with these great mountains..." By Daniel King The "Crying Dance" is John Spivey's second literary gem. Having read (many times) and enjoyed (every time) his first book, "The Great Western Divide," I greatly anticipated the opportunity to read his second effort. Using his native Kaweah River drainage (located on the western side of the Sierra Nevada) as the backdrop for this story, Spivey artfully captures the essence of the human experience and explores the universal connection between life, history, landscape, suffering, spirituality, and the Great Mind. With masterful storytelling and attention to detail, Spivey gives a "Voice" to the landscape...that of the actual physical setting and of the human mind. Well-crafted characters such as Francisco, Wu, JR, Jesusito, and Maria mingle with Coyote, Bear, Crow, Dizang, John Woods, and Padre Serra to weave a universal tale that translates across time, space, and the human experience. It's impossible not to feel as if I were a part of the story. In truth, I was...you are...we all are. I can't count how many paragraphs I underlined, pages I dog-eared, or times I said "Yes, I know that feeling'' or "That makes so much sense!" or "He also sees that!." Just like our section of the Sierra Nevada, "The Crying Dance" is a book that I will revisit time and again...and like JR and Maria...each "visit" will restore connectedness, clarity, and purpose. It will fill me with the strength to live "free of fear," reinforce the importance of reducing the "ocean of human suffering" (even if it is only by one "cubic inch" at a time), and hopefully break free from the "cycles of forgetting and remembering." I can only hope we will hear third story from John Spivey, the Sierra Nevada, and the Great Mind.

Pretty good, though I wish it was all in one part and not two parts By BrWesterberg I guess I really should have paid attention to the fact that this was a "Part 1" because I thought it ended really abruptly. I really wanted to read more, which is a great recommendation for the author, though I was frustrated because it ended so abruptly. It would have been okay if it would have felt like you do after a big cliff hanger at the end of a season for your favorite tv show, but it felt more like just the end of a chapter to me.The storyline sounds really good, and I'm interested, but I can't really review the story, since I don't know the full storyline! I do like the main character. She's sassy. I also am intrigued with the background of the story and the history - magicians being sort of like "purebloods" of some kind, and witches being the mutts of magic users. Definitely a different take on all that, and - again - I want to know more.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Strong heroine! By Kerry Vail The gorgeous cover drew me in, and the amazing story kept me there! Lara's boyfriend has really gotten himself into a spot--and I think it's great that Lara is the one that has to try to save the day. It's not going to be an easy task, but dealing with hot and sexy shifters never is, is it? Toss in some humor and intrigue, and this is one fantastic start to a story. I'm ready for the next part--NOW.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. What a twist! By Jo Kyle I enjoyed the plot very much. It started off a bit slow but picked up and I really got into it. A criticism I have is in the syntax. These may have been typos, but I found them to be annoying. There would be words missing, words misspelled, such as "of" instead of "off", This would not bother most people but I read every word. I have done some editing and have a tendency to catch these things. All in all I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the sequel."I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review."

By Squeen Denke Ms. Esseff's style of writing takes you away vividly to wherever her story is happening from many locations in America, Lebanon, Austria and Germany interweaving happenings in the extended Khoury family through 2 centuries. The main love story of Khalil and Rebecca has you pulling for only good things for them as they approach their wedding day and honeymoon after Khalil finally makes the most important decision of his life. But intermingled with their beautiful, romantic journey is the shocking history of Viktor Von Schumacher- a character you think about all the way through the book hoping he meets a horrible end to his vicious, criminal life. I truly had trouble putting this book down and kept it with me everywhere I went so I could sneak in a chapter or two wherever I was. I looked forward to this book after reading "The Butterfly & The Snail" and fell in love with Khalil and Rebecca. Now I can't wait to read "Wedding Tales:Honeymoon Caper"!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A love story mixed with mystery and danger By Louis M. Savary Although the story of a most fascinating loving couple covers only a few weeks, surrounding their wedding, I felt that I learned a lot about their families over previous generations. I especially liked the honeymoon chapters for their excitement, adventure and danger. The story has a most wonderful recurring villain, who returns to haunt and harm people in each generation. Each time he appears, you wish he would be killed off, but no, he reappears on the scene again and again in a variety of guises. It's a love story with a lot of mystery and danger. A wonderful romantic read. I can't wait to read more about the adventures of Khalil and Rebecca.

A Wonderful Love Story By Amazon Customer I enjoyed the various stories and loved how the lives of Assaf and Marya, the Baron and his son Viktor, and the challenges Rebecca and Khalil faced were expertly weaved together. The passion shared by Rebecca and Khalil kept me turning page after page.I loved reading about the Kringle family and cheered as this family rallied together in the toughest of times. I found it difficult to put the book down.I liked how the author left the reader looking forward to what is coming next. It was fascinating and left me wanting more!!

Now I Must Read the Previous Books By Lisa Stowe This is the first book I have read in this series and Ms. Herman-Ponce deftly handles the needs of returning readers and new readers. She gives enough information to let me, as a new reader, know what has happened in previous books, without giving so much backstory that a returning reader will be bored. The characters are fully developed and unique (Rita quickly became my favorite) and each character has flaws, their own threads in the story, and reasons to root for them. Even the antagonist has believable reasons for acting the way the person does. The author did an excellent job of avoiding cardboard characters and black-hat villains. The premise was pulled together in a very believable way and I will never read articles on cave paintings again without thinking of alternative reasons for their existence. Ms. Herman-Ponce also did a very good job of tying up all loose threads, answering enough questions to leave me satisfied at the end, and leaving just enough unanswered little teasers that I'll want to read the next book. All in all I found this book to be well worth reading. I loved the humor, the pacing, and the tension, and overall found the author to have a strong, unique voice. I hope she continues with this series.

The story of modern-day characters David, Lottie, and Galen now goes beyond their memories of ancient Egypt, by delving into their interwoven past lives in the North American wilderness of twelve thousand years ago. The plot thickens as David's daughter Ada finds herself in trouble, a mix of what appears to be child custody problems and her own reincarnation memories. Will David be able to rescue her from an evil plot to use his and Ada's memories of past secrets to control the future of mankind? I recommend reading the entire series in order, so that you can enjoy the unfolding of this unique story. The ending left me hankering for more. Ms. Herman-Ponce, please write, write, write, and let me know what happens next!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. What did I just read!? What a rollercoaster! By Penn O'Hara From its sexy beginning to fast car chases and dire retrieval of a minor, the reader is plunged into David Bellotti's desperate bid to keep his family together. These characters are so real I've taken them into my head and heart. Nat and Rita provide some hilarious comic relief and Galen is the mysterious wild card while David and Lottie struggle to regain normalcy in their lives. This isn't easy when danger threatens them as forces seek the secrets they hold. I urge you to read books one and two but this one stands alone just as well if you want to wet your toe in book three of this fascinating and seductive tale of the past blurring with the present. Ms Herman-Ponce writes the male point of view in a strong and believable way and this man is very attractive.

In 1929 Atlantic City, gangsters and politicians answer to Enoch 'Nucky' Johnson, the Czar of The Ritz. In Washington, J. Edgar Hoover sets out to end Nucky's reign. Nucky hatches a plan to neutralize Hoover with blackmail photos taken when the young FBI Director comes to an Atlantic City hotel for Decoration Day celebrations. Al Rubin, a studio photographer, is promised a lucrative lease on an entertainment pier to set up the shoot and snap the shots. Looking forward to seeing more great reads from this author By For what it's worth Great read!- a page turner with interesting well-fleshed out characters. I particularly like the author's handling of dialogue. These characters sound like real people. Cutler is obviously a historian at heart. He does a masterful job of setting the historical context for the events that unfold in Atlantic City circa 1929 when political bosses/racketeers ran everything in the city. Detailed, lively descriptions of life on the boardwalk provide a sense of place, with historical figures like J. Edgar Hoover and Enoch "Nucky" Johnson figuring prominently in the plot. If you are looking forward to seeing the HBO miniseries "Boardwalk Empire", reading this book will whet your appetite!

Low Light Sparkles By MRD As a history buff who has spent a good chunk of time in Atlantic City I couldn't pass up a book about the birth of organized crime in New Jersey's most famous resort. I am certainly glad that I did.Low Light is an amazing tale that moves from Philadelphia to Atlantic City as photographer Al Rubin becomes "innocently" involved in getting the goods on a young J. Edgar Hoover. His opportunity appears to be an open door to a very desirable studio location on the famous Steel Pier. But the real benefit of Al's activity is to Atlantic City's politically connected power-broker, Enoch "Nucky" Johnson.I must admit, I bought this new novel because of my interest in New Jersey and Atlantic City history. What I discovered was a well written and meticulously researched work that is a wonderfully delightful mix of very real people, some plucked from history and others created in the author's imagination.Reading Low Light was an experience akin to reading E. L. Doctorow's Ragtime, Kevin Baker's Paradise Alley, or Caleb Carr's The Alienist - putting literature into an historical context seemingly lifted from the pages of old newspapers - delivering the "feel of an era" that most history texts simply don't capture. The tale begun in Low Light (which promises to be the first of a trilogy) by Stan Cutler, captures the 1930s perfectly, and promises much more to come as Al and Ida Rubin and their daughters begin a new, more prosperous life in Atlantic City and to footing gained by Nucky Johnson in forming the future of Atlantic City.Low Light is clearly a winner. I can't wait to see more from Stan Cutler.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Evocative and Engaging By Libby Cone This book has a very engaging plot, dealing with a possible explanation for the legendary FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover's predilection for persecuting anyone he deemed Communist or otherwise subversive, while leaving the great organized crime networks of the US relatively untouched. It is common knowledge now that J. Edgar preferred the company of men; it was a career-destroying piece of information in the Twenties, and the only lever with which he could be controlled.I have lived in Philadelphia for twenty years, and have been to Atlantic City once or twice, and find Cutler's descriptions of old Philly and the honky-tonk sounds and smells of Atlantic City to be quite evocative. He tells a tale of photographer Al Rubin, who has built a life in the United States after arriving as a penniless immigrant. Still mindful of the racism and anti-Semitism rife in everyday polite American society, he has been able to situate himself in the middle class. Of course, a middle class life in those days could be destroyed if you were a naturalized citizen with too much familiarity with labor unions, Socialists, and the like. The author mentions the Palmer raids: roundups and deportations of immigrants, legal and illegal, naturalized and nonnaturalized, that were named after Woodrow Wilson's Attorney General. It was best to keep a low profile. In an interesting digression towards the end of the book, Al reflects on the gangsters who have tapped him for his services, namely Meyer Lansky and Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, and their ways of smoothing the cognitive dissonance inherent in the trade:"Meyer was of the Robin Hood school; laws were enacted by an elite group to manage society for its own, narrow benefit. He, born poor, had an obligation to take from them..." Johnson, the Treasurer of Atlantic County, boss of the Republican political machine, and "Czar of the Ritz," "...saw himself as the benevolent engineer who kept everything running smoothly." Al, in too-infrequent moments of introspection, sees himself being sucked into this demimonde, attracted by the wealth and luxury. He gradually acquires his gangster sea-legs as the plot progresses, to the point of using his boyhood boxing experience without hesitation to get out of a jam. Does he have photos of Hoover in a negligee? Does Meyer? Are the photos destroyed? Hoover is kept guessing, and his weakness for the ponies as well as for tall men is played like a violin.I would have liked to see a bit more depth in Al's infrequent soliloquies on being drawn into the life. These are the only portions where Cutler ditches show-don't-tell (" The room pulled at me -- I wanted to gamble"..."I didn't want to understand her; I had been completely seduced"). A bit more mention of some characters, such as investigators Dixon and Whitehead, would have been nice, so I didn't have to keep going back to the prologue (or whatever one is to call the pages before Part One), in which Al is spying on, and trying to photograph, Hoover and his lover Clement Talbot in flagrante delicto. The prologue would be perfectly fine in chronological order. But Cutler is spot-on in his research (indeed, I had forgotten that Woodrow Wilson, who is briefly mentioned, died in 1924; I thought he had died in 1920, but my plans to make snarky comments about this being an historical vampire novel were happily foiled). Other minor flaws were mentions of Al and his wife taking mass transit on Shabbos to Meyer Lansky's Bar Mitzvah, which had me busily dog-earing pages, only to be followed several chapters later by the mention that they were Reform Jews, and rather lapsed at that. A little more explanation earlier on would remedy that. I was very amused at one point where, when offered a lobster, Al turns it down in favor of a club sandwich (which contains bacon). It is a brilliant evocation of one of the little cognitive-dissonance smoothings many of us no-longer-really-kosher Jews do. Oh, no, not a big lobster! A little bacon buried in a sandwich? OK. But in Al's case, we have already seen him rationalize blackmail. Now for the editing. As Al's wife Ida and I both tend to say when perturbed, vay is mir! I will be the first to point out the difficulties of self-publishing: it is extraordinarily difficult to keep some of the conventions in mind, such as not indenting a line of dialogue that starts a paragraph (I am guilty of this and am beating my chest right now). But, oy, the backwards quotation marks! On almost every page yet! Sometimes he uses single quotes, it seems, just for the hell of it. Plus "alright" used so many times, a middle school English teacher would plotz! The restaurant at Nucky's Ritz is called "The Bath and Turf Club." Bath and Turf? Is that a steak on a plate with a loofah? And why do the waitstaff keep changing genders? The other things that bothered me were the portentous subtitles on the front and back covers. "Birth of Organized Crime in Jazz Age Atlantic City" and "Blackmail FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover," besides being non-grammatical, make the book sound like nonfiction. I only figured out it was a novel when I began reading the contents. A little subtlety instead of subtitles would be nice. That said, it was an enjoyable read. I hope Mr. Cutler's style and editing really shine in the second and third volumes of what is to be a trilogy.-reviewed for The New Podler Review of Books

About the Author

Matt Neuburg started programming computers in 1968, when he was 14 years old, as a member of a literally underground high school club, which met once a week to do timesharing on a bank of PDP-10s by way of primitive teletype machines. He also occasionally used Princeton University's IBM-360/67, but gave it up in frustration when one day he dropped his punch cards. He majored in Greek at Swarthmore College, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1981, writing his doctoral dissertation (about Aeschylus) on a mainframe. He proceeded to teach Classical languages, literature, and culture at many well-known institutions of higher learning, most of which now disavow knowledge of his existence, and to publish numerous scholarly articles unlikely to interest anyone. Meanwhile he obtained an Apple IIc and became hopelessly hooked on computers again, migrating to a Macintosh in 1990. He wrote some educational and utility freeware, became an early regular contributor to the online journal TidBITS, and in 1995 left academe to edit MacTech Magazine. He is also the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide. In August 1996 he became a freelancer, which means he has been looking for work ever since. He is the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, both for O'Reilly & Associates.

The author has trouble with teaching/explaining/communicating/logic/organizing/writing. With Apple's own excellent documentations, you can spend 100% of your time learning. With the author's books, however, the majority of your effort will be trying to overcome the author's troubles. Instead of making a confusing concept simple, the author makes even the simplest ideas confusing. Sometimes, reading the book is like going through a maze -- you just don't know where you are, and you don't know where you will be going. That may sound like an exaggeration. Wait till you finish the whole book. You won't feel much of what I described in the first part of the book. That is because the topics are straight forward. Any confusion can be overcome by first going through outside sources (like Apple's documentation), and then come back to try to make sense of the author. And if there is anything that troubles you, you will likely blame yourself for being "too beginner" (Don't !). At later parts, however, as the topics get more advanced, the impact of author's troubles multiplies. You will be confused more and more often, and then rely more and more on outside materials... to the point where the book serves only as a list of topics for you to do research on.Having said that, this book does contain valuable information that is not in Apple's documentation. Again, the author's troubles make it difficult to extract that information. Good or bad, this book is the same as the last year's edition, and updated from Swift 1.3 to Swift 2.0. I am maintaining my rating of 3 stars.

Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2 By Jon Klieman Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2.0, i0S9 and Xcode 7. With so many paid online tutorials out there, it is really nice to dive into the details and understand the foundation of what certain code elements are and how they are constructed. 95 pages read and about 4 hours of spent so far and I can't wait for the iOS9 programming book to get released. It is really helpful to code the examples in Xcode Playground to see the examples run, especially as a beginner.

I am a novice when it comes to programming. I have spent some time on Lynda.com, Treehouse.com, and read many different books on the subject of Swift Programming. I wanted to try this book because I felt many of the other publishers explained things well, but they always seemed to be just scratching the surface of a given subject matter. This book will not leave you with questions on whether or not the material is sufficiently covered, but it will leave you confused and frustrated with many of the explanations and examples offered.Pros: The book is thorough in its subject matter coverage. It progresses in a logical fashion like many other programming books.Cons: The examples and the explanations are made overly complex for someone who is new to programming. Most of the examples will have to be read over and over many times before you can understand what it is the author is trying to convey to you as a reader. While reading this book , I found my self referencing other books and documents trying to decipher what the author was saying.

By LT Being a fan of Peretti and Dekker for years now, I am always on the lookout for Faith-based fiction that pushes beyond traditional genres into the realm of mystery, suspense and the supernatural. From the first page of Crossing into the Mystic I felt myself drawn into Grace McKenna’s sometimes dark world of “Subtle vision” and I was hooked! The first book left me fretting over the plight of our heroine so when the opportunity arose; I practically jumped at the chance to be one of the first to read Edging into the Underground. Having waited almost a year for the next book in the series, I am pleased to say that D.L. Koontz does not disappoint with the sequel! I found Edging Through the Underground as much of an absorbing and fast paced read as its predecessor. I was pulled even deeper into Grace’s world of ghosts, angels and demons. Some of my questions were answered, a few more presented themselves along the way and I find myself salivating for the next in the series! Great Job D.L Koontz! Edging Through the Underground is everything you want in a good book: page turning suspense, a brave and stubborn heroine and a plot line that leaves you guessing until the end then wanting more! I've been anxiously awaiting the continuation of Grace's story and was thrilled to get my hands on Edging Through the Darkness. As in the first book of the series, Crossing Into the Mystic, DL Koontz takes us into the past, the present, and the unknown with lush description and elegant prose. I occasionally found myself re-reading paragraphs just to relish the beauty of the words. I couldn't do that often, though, because each chapter had me anxiously turning the pages to see what would happen next. I never give spoilers in my reviews, but I will say that the twist at the end had me slamming the book closed in shock! Then I had to go back and re-read several key passages, wondering how I'd missed it. Then I had to go on a search to find out how long I would have to wait for the third book. Read this series. You will not be disappointed.

With both William and Clay gone, Grace finds herself facing a growing evilness in the mansion she inherited from her stepfather. As she seeks to help souls with her “subtle vision,” she finds herself deeper in mysteries surrounding her house and in danger from evil spirits that still wander the earth.DL Koontz takes a controversial subject and expertly weaves a tale of suspense. Her telling of a “ghost” story while infusing the story with faith and truth is expertly done. Edging through the Darkness is an engaging and gripping read. This book will leave you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the third book.

Let There Be Light accompanies Bill Abrams on a time-traveling journey through history. Harnessing the energy of the sun's ultraviolet light, his Light Assimilator enables him to travel on a voyage to discover the truth. His adventure takes him to the moments in time in which he discovers how the Ice Age fits into the Bible, the fate of the dinosaurs, the reasons why people lived to be hundreds of years old prior to the flood, and how, in fact, the flood itself could cover the whole earth.

Mark Leonard, a veteran presenter at numerous youth conferences and church camps, weaves together the Bible's truth with this tale of a time-traveling explorer. He tells how, after several test runs, Bill decides to make a journey back to first-century Palestine to see the temple in Jerusalem. Taking off, Bill made three loops around the area and with the ship angled in a southerly direction towards the equator; the landing gear and the wings began retracting. In the blink of an eye, the craft disappeared into nothingness. And so his adventures begin.

Written for young adults, Let There Be Light will appeal to adult readers as well. If you enjoy stories that mix together adventure, engaging characters, and the discovery of deep scientific truths, then Let There Be Light will offer you a chance to go on an adventure that will change your view of the world and its history.

Mark has a way of telling a story that leads to Biblical truth. I love how he takes big subjects like dinosaurs, land shifting, the flood and climate change and shines light on them. Once again a great book and it would make a good movie.

Great Premise But Lacking By Kindle Customer In Let There Be Light by Mark Leonard, Bill, an atheist scientist, makes a time machine and travels back in time to see how the world began. Since his plane is powered by the sun, it ceases to work when he encounters the Flood, and he gets trapped in time before the Flood happens.I was intrigued by this book because I thought it would be very interesting to travel back in time to see the world before the Flood or right after it. But I was disappointed. The story was okay, and the writing was adequate, but this book almost felt like someone wrote it who didn't really believe that the Flood happened and/or hadn't done adequate research.First of all, the author used the outdated theory of a water canopy above the atmosphere as to where the rain came from for the Flood. (Here are Answers in Genesis' thoughts about this canopy.) He also used a comet to burst this canopy causing the rain, and it felt like the Flood didn't need God at all to happen. Finally, the author made the people before the Flood to be unintelligent. However, most people who believe that God created the world agree that people were smarter then than we are now. With all of that said, I did enjoy this book, especially its premise. It's a fun adventure story, told from a creationist point of view which was refreshing.I want to thank BookLook Bloggers for my kindle copy of this book, but my opinions are my own.

3D Writing At Your Fingertips Showing and telling are among the most powerful skills an author can acquire, yet incomplete and misleading information has caused much confusion. No more. Using easy-to-understand examples, this short guide demonstrates how to compel and immerse readers in 3D writing, without clogging scenes with unnecessary description. Carmen Fox, author of Divide and Conquer and Guarded, takes her craft seriously. “Over the past fifteen years, I’ve been taught by the best instructors in the business. Some of their nuggets nudged while others dragged me toward publication. Yet it wasn’t until I’d figured out showing and telling that my writing soared. My imagination finally had lift-off.” Aimed at new and intermediate authors, ‘Show Don’t Tell – Immersive Writing From The Roots Up' will set you on your own path to excellence.

Shortcuts for cutting to the pith of your scenes By Roberta Pearce There is so much writerly advice out there – I’ve bought much of it and sampled some, with varied levels of like. I mean, every work is going to teach you something you didn’t know, right? In any event, Show Don’t Tell caught my attention while I was in a mood – the mood being annoyance over the postmodern writers’ commandment that Thou shalt not tell. I [digitally] cracked open Show Don’t Tell, prepared to have my annoyance jacked to self-indulgent, self-righteous levels.Ms. Fox totally trumped me. Not only does she write that telling is not a sin, she provides good examples of when it’s appropriate. So I calmed down and just read this short, concise work. And learned some great tips. There wasn’t much new – I mean, things I didn’t already know nor had an idea of – but Ms. Fox distilled the vague essence of my knowledge into practical examples and things to watch for in one’s writing, and how the balance of showing and telling affect and perfect the pacing of your writing. Tips and little, useful [not laborious!] “homework” bits abound, and I learned many great shortcuts for cutting to the pith of a scene, making for tighter writing. Ms. Fox touches on all aspects of construction, from dialogue and narrative, to subtext and description. A must read, even if, like me, you think you know it all!

It covers all the basics of telling vs. showing as well as some other basics such as cliches and overused words. Unlike extensive guides which can be overwhelming, this will teach the basics quickly without going into much depth. This guide can also be a good refresher for veteran authors. I highly recommend this be added to your virtual bookshelf of writing resources.

If you write, you should read this By Laura Are you an author or an aspiring author and want to make your output grab the reader by the throat and immerse them face first in a world of experience so real it makes the reader feel like they're there with the characters? Read this book. I've heard people say "show don't tell" a lot and I thought I knew what it meant (I'm an avid reader), but until I read this book I realized that I had only grasped a small portion of what the phrase means. And worse, I'd gone too far in the other direction and excised practically all telling from my writing (if you're sitting there thinking that's a good thing, isn't it? you should definitely give this book a read, as actually the best novels need both and this explains how to decide which is called for). The book gives you practical examples that really let you see the difference between showing and telling and the effects achieved by various methods of showing. It also explains how to use your showing so what your characters observe gives you information about those characters. As a reader I love that, but I hadn't realized precisely what it was I was loving until Carmen took me through it step by step. In fact, I had a world of aha-moments where, as a side effect of what she was explaining, she revealed to me what it is I love so much about some authors' writing and how I can get the same effects in my own. But fear not, she's not prescriptive. You won't finish this book writing just like Carmen Fox, you will finish this book equipped with the skills and knowledge to write as the best you possible - and to make conscious choices about the effects you want to achieve. And by the way, although Carmen says this book is aimed at new and intermediate authors, I can name at least two bestsellers whose work would definitely improve if they read this book, so even if you're already a successful author, you should still consider this book (I almost didn't read it because I was thinking: yeah, yeah I already know this stuff, and it's true, I already knew about 3% of it, but l am so glad I read the rest) . Also, although this book is expressly aimed at novelists, I think most journalists would do well to learn the lessons in it (especially anyone wanting to get a human interest angle into their stories), as these techniques really do lead to the people and places in your writing coming alive to the reader - as you'll be able to see for yourself from the comparative examples of bad, good and even better practice she gives. In summary, if you ever write anything, there's at least a 90% chance you could make your life easier and your writing better by reading this book.

Émile François Zola is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and one of France’s best known citizens. In his life, Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Around the end of his life, Zola was instrumental in helping secure the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, a victim of anti-Semitism. The Dreyfus Affair was encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse. More than half of Zola's novels were part of this set of 20, collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Unlike Honore de Balzac, who compiled his works into La Comedie Humaine midway through, Zola mapped out a complete layout of his series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the Industrial Revolution. The series examines two branches of a family: the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts for five generations. Zola explained, "I want to portray, at the outset of a century of liberty and truth, a family that cannot restrain itself in its rush to possess all the good things that progress is making available and is derailed by its own momentum, the fatal convulsions that accompany the birth of a new world."

His Masterpiece, by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

The Masterpiece from a french point of view By A Customer Hi, first, you have to know that I have read the book in french so I got the direct style from Emile Zola. I've noticed that there's nothing about the Masterpiece by Zola. It's a story of a painter, who is creating one of the new styles of the 19th, and his difficulties with other painters. It's the explicit subject, but this book is mostly about the passion some artists have in life, and some others who've accepted the rules of society. You will experiment in this book the delight of creation but also the destruction of the human in creation. If you're interested in impressionism you should read this book, the historic point of view will interest you a lot since the writer has been a witness of great french painters, but if u get the message of this book, which is the essence of life, u'll really have a wonderful moment reading it.Sorry for my bad english.Sincerely,GaFIR777(Hope you'll read it Oracle242)

The endless lists of Paris streets grow tiresome, however, and the eccentricities of the Parisian artists lose their charm after a while. Not my favorite Zola.
