Defining Jesus is about the semantic content of the name Jesus. To what does the name refer, especially when modifying adjectives are attached, such as "the historical Jesus," "the Jesus of history," "the earthly Jesus," "the biblical Jesus," "the real Jesus"? Problems arise when commercial writers and scholars, without the necessary caveat, equate their hypothetical portrait of "the historical Jesus" with "the real Jesus"--none other than the Jesus of the first century "as he actually was." To disabuse scholarship of this hubris, the author carefully delineates the diverse settings in which the name Jesus appears in the ongoing dialogue about Jesus of Nazareth. Its approach is apologetic: it defends the traditional language of Christian faith, arguing with Martin Kähler in the nineteenth century that the only Jesus Christians have ever known, or can know, is the Christ of faith.

He is clearly trying to clear a path for the continuation of the readings of the Bible in a hundred years, hoping that new explorations and new transformations occur not just because of his writing, but because the Biblical Jesus waits "as long as the text lives." There are many undercurrents in the book, not the least of which is hoping to provide guidance in an increasingly secular world dominated by people's interface with technology as a prime encounter. Soulen seems to clearing the way for the journey back to the text, where people spend Time with the Gospels, and he promotes many times. By defining Jesus in the four ways that he does, he also shows that faith constantly interplays with these four Jesus ideas. Of primary interest to me was the approach towards the Miracles in relation to the extensive knowledge about the real world. One hopes that Soulen will write about that in a future text. The Christian's experience in the world create many conflicts with known Physics, but Soulen alludes to the idea that the Resurrection, the Water to Wine, the Healing of the Lepers, the Exorcism of the demoniac need not be considered falsified by empirical thought. He demands that they exist without being literal and without them being myths and without them being allegory and with them still being true. It is an amazing journey with a brilliant mind. Soulen is truly trying to find what it means to be living a life in Jesus, and he, like all the greatest ministers, finds the truth in individual stories. A well-written story is one chapter of the Book of Love, and he elucidates them clearly. In all, an excellent read by a powerful thinker and man of faith.

Soulen is clear, concise, and good humored in addressing a topic that is desperately needed attention: differentiating between the multitude of ways people create portraits of Jesus. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to hone their ability to capably analyze works about Jesus or simply gain a valuable overview of the vast field number and types of works about Jesus.
