A dense and lively read around (written) music's origins By Marcia Tiede This book is a little reminiscent of an Indiana Jones tale, though there is not a single character in the lead role -- instead there are two, separated by almost two millennia. The earlier protagonist is a hero figure, seasoned in the Roman legions, who returns to the Essene community of his childhood, in a time of fear and foreboding prior to the Roman attack on Jerusalem. Jacob ben Honi is also a talented singer and musician, a quick and sensitive learner, who was taught some of the secret mysteries of music and its power, going back to King David, but who fled after an episode of betrayal and tragedy. He has returned to face that legacy - as well as to see Rebekah, the woman he has loved since childhood.The contemporary lead character, Douglas Crenshaw, is a difficult academic, a music history teacher at Northwestern University, prone to bitter rants, whiskey, and impatience. He is obsessed with the recreation of the earliest music, deriving clues from archaeological digs and obscure manuscripts. This sought-for earliest music is framed in terms of the chain of knowledge from the classical world to the Western world via Arab civilization in Spain - all of which threads come together around a mysterious manuscript that his old flame Fatima, a professor of Egyptian origin, has found hidden in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Crenshaw is augmented in his mission to Dublin by his two "girls" - one his attractive and loyal-despite-all research assistant, and the other a brilliant and asocial Linux geek.The atmosphere of Jerusalem (a snakepit of rival factions) and its surrounds in Jacob's time is one of grim desperation, as they seek ways to preserve their heritage for any surviving generations. The contemporary story between Evanston and Dublin, with its range of characters from nefarious to quirky and eccentric, leavens the tone. Both protagonists present music as a cosmological force and key; the mystery manuscript is a link to that key and between the two stories, which, in alternating chapters, are stitched ever closer together.

Adamak This book was written so that it causes the reader to feel like s/he is now experiencing time as of the Common Era C.E. The book is divided into chapters so that one chapter is always entitled October 1, 66 C.E. and the next chapter is entitled June 20, 2011 C.E. and they continuously switch back and forth because the earlier time wrote about characters and activities that were important to music and the 2011 C.E. is about Professor of Musicology, Douglas Crenshaw.The earlier time features Jacob, who was a Judean, but fostered by a Roman officer and as a Centurion, Jacob ben honi, decided to give up his allegiance to Rome and return to being a Jew, which he was raised as a child. During his early years, he was musically inclined and studied music with the Essenes as music was one of their foremost practices. Jacob not only learned to play the lyre and flute, he also was a beautiful singer. Music being broken down into codes so that different sounds could be produced was practiced at that time.The later time features Professor Crenshaw of Northwestern University, along with two other famous men of Musicology and Professor Crenshaw believes that everything on Earth is the result of music and throughout the ages various cultures have worked with sound, coding it and attempting to produce sounds of nature and invention. He is cranky and impatient with anyone who says different. He has an assistant, a graduate Lucy, who helps him research. Recently a young woman, Pam Goddard introduced herself after one of his lectures, saying she has a Master in Applied Mathematics. Professor Crenshaw has just been fired by the University when he receives an invitation from Dr. Fatima Al-salem, head of Medieval Islamic studies. According to Crenshaw, music first began to be recorded on paper by the Spanish and Arabs and some of those early arrangements cannot be translated. Fatima has just received an ancient vocal arrangement, which no one can translate musically and she invites Crenshaw to come to Trinity College in Dublin to work on it. Trinity College is famous for having many ancient manuscripts. Crenshaw takes Pam and Lucy with him. Pam disagrees with Crenshaw about music being the basis for everything, but math is. However Pam’s ability with math, especially when writing for the computer, is most helpful. The vocal piece Fatima has, she hopes is one named “Cantilena de la Luz” that has always been rumored to exist, but no one has ever seen it.Now that is the crux of this story. But especially in the 66 CE era, there is much action because Rome is out to control Judea and has already conquered Galilee on its way to Jerusalem. Much of the history of this era, many readers already know or might be interested in it. In the 2011 C.E. period, although there is some action, it is filled with dialogues by Crenshaw while he explains music, how it developed, and how different tones are developed. Unless a person either has a background for this or wants to learn about it, it becomes boring.The book is well-written and it is whether the reader enjoys the content as to its appeal. I was given a pdf copy for an honest review.

I have used the heck out of it. I found it far exceeded my expectations considering the price.The book was also a refreshing book because it was not bogged down by having an Objective-C history. There are so many books that need to be re-written from scratch because the authors don't have the time to update them correctly. Most of the O'Reilly, Big Nerd Ranch, and Addison Wesley publishers had author's that did an awesome job with Objective-C books, but they are tomes and will be very difficult for the authors to just throw away all the material from the Objective-C days, but they are going to have to.You also get the Kindle version of this book free with the Amazon Matchbook program if you purchase the printed version.There is no code download and the online exercises are not worth going out to, but the book is definitely worth getting so you have something in your hands on Swift 2.0.It is a good cover to cover read as well as a great reference.

The French Teacher is well written and full of intriguing twists. Can't wait for Walker's next effort.

The characters are unique and well developed. I appreciate the accuracy of the settings as the two main characters travel from Paris to Bordeaux where they meet up with Charles De Gaulle at the Merignac airport, where my father was stationed in the late 1950s. We lived in the town of Andernos, so I know the author has either lived in France or did his research. Great twist at the end which was totally satisfying for me as a reader of action adventure and romance novels. I will be reading this book over and over.

About the Author The author comes from a mental health nursing and social work background. He is the author of several children's books and a few non-fiction books as well. The idea for this book came to him in 1980, when he was looking through old notes, in the basement of the psychiatric hospital where he worked. The hospital had opened its doors as a lunatic asylum in the year 1869. That day in the hospital basement, did the author hear the voice of a young girl speaking to him or did his imagination just run away with itself? What did happen was, that the idea for this novel became planted in the author's brain and has kept repeating itself, in his mind at regular intervals, that low sweet voice of the girl who spoke to him that first day. As well as this novel, the author is just finishing a non-fiction book about the history of women and mental illness. What has become of the voice in his head? Well it's still there and it doesn't seem to be leaving anytime soon!

By R A Hammond This is not just another novel set in a rural working class environment in Ireland in the late 1930s, it is a highly descriptive story of the social history endured by so many, the grinding poverty, the injustice but also the hope which lived in the hearts and heads of those who strove for a better life. For those, like me, who have little knowledge of the village life which prevailed in Ireland in the 1930s and the social systems which dominated their lives this novel will entertain them but will be a real bonus in it's vivid descriptions illuminating the characters and the institutions which dominated their lives. A real good descriptive read for any student of social history.

By The Bookie Monster Straying from the usual plot of trying to create a stronghold and stand their ground, Zombie Attack! Rise of the Horde takes us on the road. Trying to get to his brothers military base, Xander picks up new comrades along the way. In Sagliani's world, where zombies aren't the only monsters roaming the streets, Xander and his friends face neo-Nazis, marauders, cults and other evils of a fallen society.Where all it takes is a single bite, this group of misfits suffer the loss of loved ones, childhood idols, and each other. Xander, jaded and suspicious, displays instincts and common sense far beyond his years. Trained by his soldier half brother, Moto, Xander is skilled in martial arts and wields my favorite weapon...the katana. Unassuming Benji looks to Xander for direction like a lost puppy dog. Xander takes Benji under his wing, protecting him from the torments of man and zombie alike. These two fast friends come across teen actress Felicity Jane. Having fallen victim to the child actor stereotype of substance abuse, Felicity Jane manages to pull herself together and team up with Xander and Benji.No zombie book would be complete without a few religious zealots. Sagliani manages to sneak in my favorite apocalyptic quote "the dead shall walk the earth because Hell is overflowing and there is no more room for them". And doesn't it just figure that during the apocalypse, the only things left airing on TV are The Jersey Shore and Jackass!?Appropriate for the Young Adult masses it was written for, Zombie Attack! Rise of the Horde balances the right amount of horror and emotion. Sagliani manages to pull out another winner. The characters were relatable and genuine. The story was fast-paced and unexpected. By Annamaria Bazzi Xander.Running, always running and protecting his friends.Benji.A little boy who watched his family being killed and loves comic books.Felicity Jane.A beautiful teen actress who becomes part of Xander’s family.Let’s get one thing clear I still dislike Zombie stories…Xander sets one goal for himself, to reach the base where his brother Moto is stationed. In the process of reaching this goal he protects Benji, who is bullied by older boys. He takes Benji with him. He meets a teen celebrity, Felicity Jane, and the trio becomes each other’s new family.The unlikely bizarre circumstances that plague their trip is sometimes too much, yet the investment I ended up putting in these characters, who slowly unfolded their full personalities, was enough to keep me turning pages. I needed to see them safe.Mr. Sagliani uses words to create three amazing characters. Are they perfect? No, they are kids trying to survive a most horrendous virus known to mankind.As the reader, we see the Zombies. We hear the Zombies, but they are not overwhelming, even I could put up with them because the journey Xander embarks in puts his character on display. He’s strong. He’s courageous. That’s what we see on the outside. We also see his internal struggle, the one that shows he’s only a kid.Well executed. It kept me turning the pages until there were no more to turn, but there is, book 2. What the best ones do is give the reader an insight into the culture of the storyteller - what their daily lives were like, what they feared, how they interacted, and what they hoped for. While this book could stand a better editor - it's full of typos and incorrect words - the stories are great, and the author certainly gives a picture of mid 20th century appalachian life.

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

Set in Ireland in the 1830s, it tells the story of a proud but destitute family and their tragic downfall at the hands of a scoundrel. Myles Ussher is an English police captain sent to Ireland to help stop illegal whiskey making. Feemy Macdermot falls deeply in love with him, though he has no intention of returning that love. The locals hate him, and Feemy's brother Thady, when he learns of Ussher's merely using Feemy, kills him in a rage when he believes Ussher is abducting her against her will (they are actually eloping). A trial ensues and after some exciting intervals involving escapes, Thady is convicted and hanged.Trollope offers a sympathetic look at Ireland's troubles during this time period; indeed the "innocent" Feemy might symbolically represent that country while the unfeeling, spiteful Ussher is England. Trollope had spent a good deal of time in Ireland and knew the country and the people well; his use of Irish dialogue is natural and realistic. The trial scene is pretty exciting, and Trollope's broad humor is already clearly evident. The use of the dilapidated Macdermot mansion as the starting and ending point, with the main plot sandwiched inbetween as flashback, gives the novel a cinematic touch. The author would achieve greater novels as his career progressed, but this initial production highlights an auspicious start.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. What a debut! By R. M. Peterson This was the first of the forty-seven novels that Anthony Trollope wrote. He was nearly thirty when he began writing it. He later claimed that never before had he "put pen to paper". That is hard to believe. THE MACDERMOTS OF BALLYCLORAN is not perfect -- there are minor structural problems and some repetition -- but it reads like the work of a thoroughly accomplished novelist. At the same time, while it employs many of the stylistic tropes and conventions of the Victorian Era, it does not strike the modern reader as something published way back in 1842. It is fresher, more modern, than Dickens.THE MACDERMOTS OF BALLYCLORAN is set in rural Ireland in the 1830's. It is a perceptive portrayal of Irish life and society in the decade before the potato disease and the Great Hunger. Trollope is sympathetic to the native Irish, whether Protestant or Catholic. (The ecumenical spirit of the novel is remarkable.) The eponymous Macdermots are rural gentry, striving to maintain their social status on a small estate with tenant farmers who cannot pay their rents, some of whom take to making and drinking potheen (illegally distilled spirits) for a smidgen of cash and the solace it brings. Bullying both the small gentry and the tenant farmers are the representatives of the Crown (such as the revenue police charged with shutting down the distillation of potheen) and the wealthy mercantilists. Their oppressive conduct gives rise to the secret society of the Ribbonmen, who are sworn to oust their subjugators. The tides of agitation and apprehension end up swamping many innocent people. In many respects, the novel is a tale of the mischiefs of British colonialism of Ireland.There is plenty of action, including a duel, a brother killing his sister's suitor whom he believed to be abducting her for immoral purposes, the mutilation of an overly zealous landlord, and a murder trial. (As a retired trial lawyer, I thought the account of that trial, which takes up roughly the last fifth of the novel, marvelously well done; Trollope had in him the makings of a superb barrister.) There are finely wrought characters, of which the most memorable are Thady Macdermot and the local priest John McGrath. There are several wonderful set pieces. Trollope displays his fine ear for dialect and his sophisticated way with dialogue. Gentle humor bubbles along through stretches of the book. In the end, though, THE MACDERMOTS OF BALLYCLORAN is a sad, melancholy tale.P.S.: The copy I read is a handsome hardcover edition from The Folio Society, published in 1991. I am confident that the paperback editions published by Penguin Books and by Oxford University Press (Oxford World's Classics) are very satisfactory, although they may be out of print and available only via used book dealers. Judging from Amazon's "Look Inside" feature, the edition published by CreateSpace has a horribly compressed layout and cannot be recommended except to the masochistic.

By Steve Forsyth Several years (and novels) before Trollope struck gold with THE WARDEN and the Barsetshire novels, he debuted with this account of a poverty stricken Irish landlord and his attempts to hold on to his estate and navigate the violent and seamy world or pre-famine Ireland. Thady Macdermot is the son of an Irish landowner who begins the novel trying to get payment from his various tenants and stave off a persistent creditor, while his mostly insane father increasingly accuses him of trying to sabotage his ownership of their estate, and his unsupervised young sister carries on a sexual liaison with a local police officer. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to several of the local tenants, who all have it in for this officer because of his constant raids on their illegal alcohol production, and are trying to enlist Thady's hesitant aid in "ridding the country of him." Meanwhile, a parish priest, Father John, is actively working to keep Thady on the righteous path, and trying also to figure out how to separate Thady's sister, Feemy, from the illicit affair she has fallen into. Eventually the many conflicts erupt into an act of murder, and the final third of the novel follows the trial of the guilty party, including an in-depth analysis of the legal ramifications, as Trollope so loved to unfold.Down to its final grim death, the novel is one of squalor and depression. It is, however, to the author's great credit that even in dealing with such dark subject matter, he is able to infuse scenes of humor and liveliness throughout. If this is an impoverished people, they are still filled with life, and endeavor to live those lives and take joy in whatever they can. Be it a horse race, or the betting party preceding it - be it a local wedding - or just sitting on the porch imbibing illegal moonshine, these are characters as real as you and I. Trollope's great strength has always been in creating relatable characters with realistic dialogue, and his debut shows this was a natural talent!His descriptions of the land, its people, its homes, and its lifestyles come alive, aided by his many years spent living among them. It is noted that Trollope has not here written an English novel about the Irish, but has in fact written an Irish novel. I found these interesting, but also felt they were wisely cut, particularly the final chapter - ending with the death, while tragic, has much more dramatic punch than tacking on a bunch of "here's what happened to this guy" narration.The edition also features an introductory essay that explores a little more in-depth the larger political ramifications of the novel, detailing how the characters of Feemy and her policeman lover, Ussher, echo the plight between England and Ireland of the day - of course I cannot go into depth here without giving much away, but suffice to say the parallels are quite interesting.In the end, have no doubt, this is a tragic novel - but Trollope's mastery of the Irish dialect and characterizations, as well as his trademark wit, make this vastly readable - quote an astonishing debut, even if the English readers of his day didn't appreciate it.

By Catherine Now that I have finished reading Elizabeth Street, I miss the characters and wish to be in their lives again. That is because the author depicted the characters in such a vivid and clear way, that I became emotionally involved with them. I don't know if the novel is historical fiction, a detective story, or a story about the human condition - all of the above, actually. While immersed in this novel, I felt the wonderful warmth of an Italian family; the strength and courage of a mother and other characters; and the suspense of a kidnapping. I could see, in my mind, New York City in the early 1900's. The author obviously did extensive and impeccable research. Her greatest strength, though, is her ability to tell a beautifully written and fascinating story. I do wish there were more novels like this one!

Grabs you quickly and doesn't let go By Joseph Daniels Elizabeth Street is the rare book that combines a rich historical setting and focus with a brilliantly faced-paced narrative. It is a page turner that manages to bring the reader back and forth from the streets of new york to villages and hamlets in Italy. I was sceptical since this is not my normal genre but its a great read and I ended up very much appreciating an unknown and richly fascinating part of the American Experience.

This is a family story built on recollections, secrets and untold stories, steeped in the history of both southern Italy and NYC at the turn of the century. It is a heartfelt, suspenseful story of which reveals so much about the life and times of the Italian immigrants who came to this country. You fall in love, you are terrorized, you are angered...just as the main character, Laurie's great grandmother, Giovanna was - and you are amazed by her strength and determination.I used to live in NYC - a stones throw from Mulberry St. "Elizabeth Street" is like a time machine, bringing to life Little Italy in a time I never knew but now can well imagine.I wish I had been able to read this when I lived there ! Bravo.

An excellent adventure By ToniD So, who wouldn't want to go time-traveling?Until I unearth HG Wells' time machine, I'll make do with fictional time travel. Quinn Richardson's smartly entertaining SNAG gives the reader a fun team to travel with, two teenage boys who mysteriously (and in the end, believably) get sent on a dicey mission aboard a doomed ship—the Lusitania. The boys are engaging, one on the nerdy side, one on the rough-and-tumble action side. Both make the kind of mistakes you'd expect from teenagers thrown into a harrowing adventure with (of necessity) little training. The consequences of their mistakes could be dire, because this 'time snag' they're sent to unravel is momentous. 'Nuff said about that.Another engaging team stays in the present day at the time-travel agency: a witty and sometimes snarky computer and his long-suffering human counterpart. They sometimes bicker like an old married couple but they're the best at what they do. This time, though, they've sent two unskilled teenagers to repair the past—and, yeah, things are starting to get dicey back in 1915.One of the coolest things about SNAG is the identity of the time-snag target the boys are sent to intercept. To say that this person's role in history will be momentous is to understate.BTW, the HG Wells time machine makes a cameo appearance in SNAG. What a ride!

By CT This book reads like a slightly older Magic Tree House story. It is a smart, entertaining book, with Time Travel being managed professionally by an Agency. Reading level is middle-grade (10 yo) and up, so I will pass on to my kids.To everyone looking for a well-spun story on time travel with a fast-paced plot, adequate twists and "snags", witty banter, GP-friendly humor and a bit of historical fiction, this book will likely meet your expectations.

About the Author

Joseph Brassey lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and two cats. He teaches medieval fighting techniques to members of the armed forces. The Mongoliad is his first published fiction.

Mark Teppo is the author of the Codex of Souls urban fantasy series as well as the hypertext dream narrative The Potemkin Mosaic.

Cooper Moo spent five minutes in Mongolia in 1986 before he had to get back on the train—he never expected to be channeling Mongolian warriors. In 2007 Cooper fought a Chinese long-sword instructor on a Hong Kong rooftop—he never thought the experience would help him write battle scenes. In addition to being a member of The Mongoliad writing team, Cooper has written articles for various magazines. His autobiographical piece "Growing Up Black and White," published in the Seattle Weekly, was awarded Social Issues Reporting article of the year by the Society of Professional Journalists. He lives in Issaquah, Washington, with his wife, three children, and numerous bladed weapons.

Angus Trim is a skilled sword-maker and machinist who lives in the Pacific Northwest. He is adept in various western martial arts as well as tai chi sword form.

I didn't know until the end of that book that there was going to be a fourth. Luckily for me, I finished reading the third a day before this one, Katabasis, was released. This time, the reading kept me engaged through the entire book.I particularly enjoy the technicality of the fighting and the descriptions of the tactics. Also, considering how many authors are working on the books, it never feels like a hodge podge of clashing styles.

By Skylark Alauda Thibedeau Katabasis is the 'Mongoliad' series picks up where volume three left off. You can read this without the other three as the Sword Brothers go off in a different direction this time but it helps if you already know the characters.**** Some spoilers for previous Volume*****The Sheild Bretheren have saved the West from the Mongol Hordes. The Great Khan is dead and the Mongol leaders are returning to Karakoram with their armies to elect a new leader. Feronatus has grabbed the mystical Horse banner and is taking it back to the Brotherhood occumpanied by Istvan. The rest of the fellowship now joined by Chinese slave girl courtesan Lian are slowly making their way back across the frozen steppe. The mission over the fellowship begins to question the future unaware that they are being persued by Mongol Warriors Gansukh and Alciq who want revenge for the Great Khan's death and the return of the mystical banner.In Kiev where we left Percival after his vision of the Virgin in the crypt of St. Ilya he and the surviving sheild maidens abandon the fortress after he recieves a new vision from the Babi Yaga. The join up with Prince Nevsky's army as it relieves the city of Pskov which has been overrun by the Tuetonic Knights who have taken advantage of the Mongol retreat to go on a crusade against the Eastern Orthodox Christians in Rus.In Pskov we find our old enemy Kristaps of the Livonian Order having survived the battle at Mongwe Khan's camp has joined the Tuetonic knights in their invasion. With the Catholic Bishop of Livonia they plot the destruction of Prince Nevsky's army which will culminate in the Battle of the Ice.Overall I found the plot ok. I know its hard to put together a multi author story like this. Had I not already been invested in the characters I may not have found it to be as good of a story. The shield brother mysticiam that is hinted in the other volumes is quite plain here and edges the story towrds a 'fantasy' rather than a 'historical' genre.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Too Much of A Departure By Eric B. Burres I loved the first three book in the Mongoliad Cycle. They were full of great characters, complex plots and excellent writing. The fourth book does have have some of these qualities since the two main writers (Neal Stehpenson and Greg Bear) are not involved in its writing. Whille this could have not been a big issue, I feel the introduction of the supernatural elements totally defeats the original concepts of the storyline. This is too bad. I really loved the first three books very much as well as many of the related short stories.
