The Right Stuff By Charles Ledford When I read a book, I turn down page corners and underline as I’m going in order to facilitate referencing memorable or important or relevant or teachable lines of thought, quotes, etc.I’m about halfway through Artful Journalism and my system is breaking down. It does me absolutely no damned good to have every page folded down and line after line, paragraph after paragraph, highlighted.I’m 52 years old and I’ve been a professional photographer my entire adult life. Walt Harrington says things in this book that reinforce what I’ve felt about documentary photography/photojournalism/visual storytelling for years. He reinforce my experiences in the field across many cultures, many countries and many clients and assignments. Harrington succinctly crystalize ideas that have been either nebulously floating in my head or put down on paper with decidedly less aplomb than I’ve been able to achieve.I now teach visual journalism at the university level. From a technical perspective, my students can learn everything they need to know from the camera’s instruction book, some 13-year-old’s YouTube software tutorial or a few quick Google searches; everything, that is, except what Walt Harrington writes about in this remarkable book, and THAT’S the stuff I long to drill into their young hearts and minds - that success comes only from tenaciously spending time and time and more time with a subject… that one collects EVERYTHING, not just what we think we might need, because it is the piece we didn’t think about as we collected it (Ms. Robb fixing her hair at the mirror) that will provide the key to our story… that one (in my words now) waits patiently like a buddha in the lotus position silently praying for the serenity to know when to close one’s hand around a pebble that, out of pure grace, has landed in our upturned palm, because as photographers if we see the moment we are trying to capture, we have (literally due to the technology and physics of the machine) missed it.Thank you, Walt Harrington, for this book. I’m going to make it required reading for my students.

Every Journalist Should Read This Book By Thomas Lake Early in this book, Walt Harrington tells the story of a philosopher who lectured a group of journalism students about the unreliable nature of perception. When a student asked about truth, the philosopher implied there was no such thing.Harrington disagrees:"Well, truth was at least the table at which they sat. Truth was at least that you could rap it with your knuckles and sound waves would shoot through the room and sensation would rocket through your hand. Truth was at least that the rectangular shape of the table distributed the students in a defined manner. Truth was at least that the table was made of a certain kind of wood that came from a certain kind of tree in the forest. Truth was at least that a craftsman had taken that rough chunk of wood and, through the creativity of his mind and the mastery of his hand, sawed and shaved and sanded and finished it into a table. Truth was at least that beneath its solid existence lived millions of dancing molecules."Harrington is one of America's great journalism teachers, and this book reminds us why. He inspires us to create a kind of magic in our stories -- the universal sense of being alive -- but he will not tolerate shortcuts. The facts are the facts. No more, no less. I've been a journalist for 15 years, and this book left me feeling inspired and re-oriented. Buy it for anyone who wants to tell true stories and tell them the right way.

This is a meaningful and important book By Richard Weiss Walt Harrington writes:" When you put so much into your work, you want it to matter..."But, in the end, you can only do what you can do."Everybody else decides if it mattered."Walt Harrington matters. His work matters to me and legions of journalists and non-fiction writers around the nation. If you have somehow missed out on what Walt has to offer, here's your chance to catch up through a collection of essays that will affirm what you are doing well and provide you a course correction for whatever your failings may be. Walt is one of the finest journalists of his time. But unlike others in the pantheon whose work sometimes leaves us either envious or feeling small, Walt has taken the time to describe his process in ways that give those of us with aspirations a tremendous sense of possibility. I cannot think of anyone in my writerly life who has taught me more about how to walk in the world and write a compelling paragraph than the great professor Harrington.
