About the Author
Cameron Lackpour first worked with OLAP technology in the dinosaur days of mainframe multidimensional databases and saw the Essbase light in 1993. He has been in the consulting business since 1996, creating solutions for customers using Essbase, Planning, and anything else that ties to those two products. Cameron is active on OTN’s and Network54’s Essbase message boards, the ODTUG Hyperion Special Interest Group, the ODTUG Board of Directors, and his Essbase Hackers blog. He has been an Oracle ACE since 2011 and an ACE director as of 2012.

Actually this one and “Developing Essbase Applications: Advanced Techniques for Finance and IT Professionals”. Those are not two editions of the same book, but have totally different content.If you are a consultant, or an IT professional supporting Essbase/planning or related technologies - these two books are a mandatory reading. Most of the chapters (written by different authors) are quite technical. Many decades of collective experience and technical knowledge put into just two books. Plenty of use cases, sample code, design patterns, best practices, latest and greatest technologies like Hybrid mode, Exalytics, etc.If you just recently started to work with Essbase, or if you are mostly on the business/functional side - there are a few chapters for you as well (and hopefully you’ll be interested to read them all). In general chapters are more or less disconnected, so if you are interested in one particular topic, you can read just a relevant chapter.

Oracle Essbase deep dive By Amazon Customer Personally, I think this is not a beginner’s book about Essbase, or one that will quickly teach you how to solve a problem with detailed explanations and examples. Instead, it is a conglomeration of subjects related to Oracle Essbase that you will not find in a manual or see at a conference because the subjects presented are more theoretical and explore concepts, ideas, and solutions at a much deeper level. Of course, you can find best practices and relevant code examples which you can reuse for your own applications. In the almost 500 pages there is much about new developments with Oracle Essbase and the authors are very experienced people. Subjects that stand out are Exalytics, Essbase and OBIEE integration, Dodeca, and of course the new hybrid option. The word “Hybrid” in the subtitle should be seen as “mixture” rather than a reference to the new storage type in Essbase. I enjoyed the fresh and hybrid manner in the book and I hope you will as well.Philip Hulsebosch

After working in the Hyperion and Essbase industry for 15+ years I have seen and lived (through) many situations where a book such as this becomes an invaluable resource. I have been fortunate to hear some of the authors at various conferences over the years and I truly respect them and look forward to hearing and reading about their latest insights, tips, and creative solutions. If you live Essbase and the EPM stack then this book, as well as it's predecessor, are a must have for your reference library.
