About the Author Donna Belk is a celebrant and home funeral guide who is a founding member of the National Home Funeral Alliance, and currently serves on their executive board. She has published books, videos and articles about home funerals and the importance of families being involved with the final arrangements for loved ones. She offers an online course, BeyondHospice.com for this work. Donna is a creative spirit and lifelong spiritual seeker who loves to walk, babysit her grandchildren, and learn new things. Each ceremony celebrates a stage of that final transition we will all take.The book is organized into chapters. Each chapter contains two or three ceremonies appropriate for a particular stage. Chapter 1 contains ceremonies that can be used at a vigil before death. Chapter 2 contains ceremonies that can be used to sanctify the body and space. Chapter 7 contains ceremonies appropriate for a scattering of ashes.Each ceremony is relatively short and self-contained. Each ceremony includes pragmatic instructions (“Position the group so that it is upwind of the ashes to be scattered”) and the actual ceremony. The ceremonies are not specific to any particular religion but can be easily modified to accommodate most religious traditions.The book is important for two reasons. First, it rejects the notion that a death should be honored by a single monolithic conventionally structured “memorial service.” Instead, this book treats the transition as a number of small events, each of which need to be embraced, experienced, and honored. Second, this book empowers each of us to move from being passive observers of the final transition to active participants in how that transition is celebrated.My only complaint about this book is that it has chosen a title that is too limiting: Home Funeral Ceremonies. In fact, this book contains wonderful ideas that can be adapted for all funerals, regardless of whether they take place in homes, churches, funeral homes, or gardens. Even the word “funeral” is misleading, because it implies the kind of mega-memorial event that this book actually discourages. The sub-title of the book is more descriptive: A primer to honor the dying and the dead with reverence, light-heartedness and grace.I highly recommend this book to not only the loved ones of the dying, but to priests, spiritual directors, hospice workers, palliative care providers, and any who are privileged to accompany the dying on their final journey. In my own work as a Spiritual Director, this will be a book I will be loaning to many families facing the death of loved ones. Even those facing their own death will find this a wonderful starting point for discussing how they would like to be accompanied and honored when their time comes.

The book is elegantly simple with powerful rituals that bring us closer to each other, our loved one no longer with us and of course the Divine. Ritual and connection heal us, hold us and allow us to be what we need to be. Donna & Kateyanne provide the templates to guide us and take us to the place of good grief. Thank you both.

I wish we had this book years ago, and am glad we have it now for what the future (undoubtedly) holds. Both authors are brilliant at conveying their ideas -- ideas that are both very old and very modern.
