The year is 1888. Justine Holloway finds herself an orphan after her parents die in a horrific fire. She is sent to live with her godparents, Harold Mendenhall and his sister Frances. On the boat ride home, she meets Amun Farouk, a handsome Egyptian Ambassador who is also sailing to England to meet her godfather. What Justine does not realize as she dons the veil of mourning is that Harold runs a secret organization under the nose of polite society, much to the dismay of his genteel sister. The Council was created for the protection of humanity from the Varius, refugees from a parallel universe who shift their form while others channel the forces of magic. They seek refuge in Victorian London, hidden in the slums, easily forgotten until a human ends up incinerated or sucked dry. Drawn into the plot against her will, Justine finds herself the object of a vampire’s lurid obsession. According to ancient texts, vampires kill humans for fodder, their blood and the air they breathe inferior, but this killer has other intentions for her. Does Justine’s survival depend on Amun or will he kill her to save humanity?

By John Yeo Jr. Jen Corkill's expert and intimate knowledge of late 19th century England shines through in every page of SEASON OF MISTS.Ms. Corkill took me by the hand and guided me through the crowds of well-to-do upper class as I met the young heroine Justine Holloway, and her curious but improper infatuation with the Egyptian ambassador Amun Farouk. What I really enjoyed about this book----apart from the fantastic elements of skin walkers, vampires and other dark threats from another dimension---was the little mundane scenes that were sprinkled throughout. The sheer hell of putting on a corset, the intimidating expectations of a young woman being presented before the wealthy upper class for the first time, the blunt realities of the limited choices women had in their lives back in 1888.....these are world-building techniques that made the past come alive for me as I read. These same colorful layers can also be a weakness. I can see how some readers, expecting action and adventure and intrigue galore, might be put off by the occasional slow pacing of some of the chapters. But if you're ready to take a colorful tour of living in Victorian-era England along with a good dose of dark magic, shape-changing heroes and what lies on the other side of that portal in the basement of the museum.....SEASON OF MISTS is an experience you'll want to indulge in.

A very fun read By Richard D Mellinger Jr Season of Mists reads like an episode of Downton Abbey if the characters were all dropped into the middle of a fantastic paranormal fiasco complete with shape-shifters and vampires. If you don't love the well imagined characters and witty dialogue, I have my doubts about whether or not you are a real person.

By Pamela J In the height of the Victorian Age in England, the stage is set with a plethora of characters ranging from the enigmatic and mysterious Egyptian Amum Farouk to ingénue Justine Holloway; from renowned archaeologist Harold Mendenhall to tall and rugged Doran Stewart; from Quinn the Butler, who upholds a sense of propriety to Molly, a fiery Irish kitchen maid, who struggles to gain propriety. From a London society drawing room to the Egyptian Room in the British Museum, and amidst the dark, seedier streets of London, author Jennifer Corkill successfully builds anticipation to the point that left this reader breathless, turning each page and hoping the story would never end! Each chapter dares the reader to venture further into each character’s story. And each chapter will not disappoint. On the contrary, you will be excited, charmed, anxious, cheering, booing, and always engaged. Your imagination will soar and your curiosity will be piqued as you travel from a foot of snow with a blast of frigid weather to the misty, gas-lit cobblestone streets under a starry, star-filled night. Within a few chapters, you will become aware of the creatures that stalk the streets and haunt the young women of London and of the Vale, a place as mysterious as the people who inhabit those lands. But first, Justine must finish her voyage to England, during which she soon learns, that she is being pursued by something or someone who has a mysterious hold over her…could it be one of those creatures of the Vale? Or perhaps the intriguing Mr. Amum Farouk, who holds her transfixed with his intense presence and steady stare? You will have to see for yourself. I did and I am so glad I did.A good read? Absolutely! A sequel? I can’t wait!
